They say the best marketers are always creating relationships with customers, brands, and other marketers. Orli Gayeta, the sales and marketing manager of the Filipino Institute, for years now, has been selling relations, innovative stories, and magic to various companies in the UAE. He said working in the frontline of the institution’s marketing department is giving him the opportunity to meet different people and knowing lives, inspiring stories, high-caliber network-based every day.

Before embarking on a UAE life, Orli had stayed in Israel for six years where his family is based until now. As their eldest daughter continued studying in the Philippines, they went back home. However, he has also worked in other countries like Saipan, Macau, and Hong Kong. Recalling his ﬁrst arrival in the emirate, he said: “I traveled with my daughter in 2014 to assist her with her employment abroad until I enjoyed my two months stay as a tourist and planned to return to work for good here, yet I value the kind of OFW life I have here.” Apart from meeting potential clients on a daily basis, Orli does Facebook Live--from discussing various promotions, reviewing the latest restaurant addition to Dubai, to conducting online games for Filipino Institute followers. “This work has also given me the chance to explore Dubai and other emirates. I enjoy the rich lifestyle with exceptional healthcare and hospital amenities here. I feel safe here,” he said. Plans after Dubai As he celebrates his seventh-year anniversary in Dubai, Orli said he still plans to go back to Batangas and live a ‘simple, uncomplicated, and quiet’ life. “I plan to just have a simple business and attach myself to community service since I always believe that service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth,” he added. Advice from an OFW to another “Love your family, put them ﬁrst in everything because I wasn’t that lucky since mine is physically separated,” he said when asked what’s his advice to his fellow OFWs.

One of his dilemma in life was not witnessing his youngest daughter grow up as he left her when she was only 2 and rejoined when she was 9. “This is mainly the life struggle of an OFW,” he added. “Another thing, saving money can help you become ﬁnancially secure. I am always impressed with all our kababayans who have this routine of saving since Dubai is providing so much urge about items on sale from left to right, and if you are extravagant, you will nothing in your pocket,” Orli said.

“It is not wrong not to trust so easily so you will not regret anything. Finding the right people to trust should always be the best responsibility for ourselves,” he concluded.

Since the inception of the Filipino Institute, Cheryl Marie S. Delim has already been playing a huge role in the development of the educational institution. She plays a huge part in whatever the Filipino Institute is achieving today. Delim, who worked for a very long time as a salesperson, supported and trusted the founder all throughout and almost gave half of her life to the institution. As the company achieves greater things each year, the Administrative Manager said that she is proud that it has become an established company and known in the academe for providing quality and affordable short-term and long-term courses. Overseeing almost everything, including inquiries over the phone, social media, and entertaining students in the Dubai campus, Delim said it is an honor and a privilege to serve the Filipino community through the institution.

Nedlloyd Nniero Perez

Dean of Virtual / Short-term Courses If there is one thing that Nedlloyd Nniero Perez learned while working in the Filipino Institute for 21 months now as the Dean of Virtual and Short-term courses is how to keep everything in check, especially he's entrusted with multiple tasks. No matter how enormous the tasks are, Dean Lloyd, as his colleagues dearly call him, is able to deliver them in a timely manner At the age of 19, he already secured a degree of Bachelor of Science in Marine Technology at the Philippine Maritime Institute and got on-board only four months after he graduated. He worked as a seafarer for 27 months. “They say that if you are a seafarer, you earn a lot of money, but they didn’t know that we risk our lives just to cross the unstable ocean with heavy equipment and being away from family,” he said noting that the silver-lining about his former job is the fact that he gets to travel in various countries and continents for free. Shifting career path After considering many things before moving jobs, Lloyd has decided to seek greener pastures in the UAE. He was first assigned to the Abu Dhabi campus and was relocated months after to the headquarters of the Filipino Institute in Dubai. “I enjoy the tasks being given to me because I can see that they are beneficial to the public and that matters to me. We also have a culture of treating each other with respect and civility if not actual friendliness,” he said. The former seafarer further added that part of the work culture in the workplace is using conflict productively and get past disagreement without rancor.

Succe To give his family a brighter future, Arthur ‘Archie’ Villalon has been working abroad for almost half of his life--mainly working in the hotel and restaurant industries. Trying to go out of his comfort zone, he started working in the sales industry and now a Dean of the Graduate School in the Filipino Institute. He oversees the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) online and in-person students. “The best thing about working here is I get to enhance more of my skills and learn more. Not only that but I also don’t feel the pressure in working here because my colleagues, and especially our boss, are very helpful and easy to go along with,” he said. Aside from being the main contact person of MBA and Ph.D., Arthur is also part of the troubleshooting team when there are incidents that need to be addressed immediately. When asked about his long-term plans, he said he doesn’t think one because one does not know what will happen in the future. “What I know is that we only live once and I live to the fullest. Working and giving my kids a brighter future and spending as much time when I get home for a vacation,” he added.

Dean of Al Ain Campus If there is one word that best describes Andrea ‘Dean Andy’ Marie Green, that would be adaptable. Believing that nothing will last forever, not even the good and bad, Green has been living in the UAE for 14 years now, mainly working in the F&B and hospitality sectors. She went to the UAE in 2006 with the aim to give her mother and siblings a comfortable life after her non-Filipino father left them.

Green has set foot in UAE when she was only 18 years old. She was already playing her father’s role in their family. Her first job was in a cafe as an ‘all-around’ employee, including being a barista, cashier, and waitress. A year after, her efforts were recognized by the management, thus she was promoted to be their supervisor that gave her many benefits, including improving herself and being trusted with bigger tasks for almost six years. After working in the F&B, she has decided to take a leap in career and joined the hospitality sector. For nine years, Green worked in most of its departments, including F&B, reservations, guest relations, and events. “I learned a lot of things and meet a lot of people that influenced of being who I am today,” she said.

Serving the countrymen Currently, Green is working as the dean of the Filipino Institute Al Ain campus. She oversees trainers and students from the day of their class up until their graduation day. “What I enjoy about it I got to serve my countrymen--the Filipinos. I was excited and nervous when I got the job since my background is not related to the academic area, however, here I am and grateful and blessed to be with the Filipino Institute,” she added.

When asked about plans after her overseas stint, the dean said she always wanted to travel and see the world. “I always wanted to help the less fortunate children in the Philippines, especially those homeless ones,” she said. Her advice to her kabayans is to love their job and always be grateful. “Work hard even no one is looking at you or recognizing your work,” she added. There is only one word that best describes Cristina Giron Dela Pena,--that's 'ﬁghter. The current manager of St. Zita Cleaning Services, a company under the umbrella of the Filipino Institute, has been through many storms. However, according to Cristina, she didn’t wait for the storm to pass on. She had to learn to dance in the rain. Hailing from Bulacan, the single mother for over a decade now has been bestowed to oversee the cleaning services by the educational institution.

“I managed my life to be a single and independent woman, contented with my life and a hardworking mother to my 17 years old son and 14 years old daughter,” she said noting that she has to be strong now that both of her parents have passed away. Cristina was not able to finish studying college as her family struggled financially. She was forced to work immediately to help her family to survive. “Hindi ako nag-rebelde dahil pinaghinto ako ng pag-aaral. Mas ginawa ko tong inspirasyon at ginamit yung knowledge na natutunan ko sa work,” she said adding that while she was still studying, she worked as a ‘gasoline girl’ until she was promoted as a liaison officer. ‘Adjustment, acceptance, and faith’ are her pillars in life.

Succe Cristina has a long list of overseas jobs, including being the supervisor of Emirates Aircraft Magazine Cleaning and Hygiene, Senior Supervisor Sales cum Merchandiser, Sales Coordinator cum Admin of Logistics, Sales Executive Manager, and Private Manager, among others. Being part of the Filipino Institute, according to her, has given her the opportunity to work professionally and study for free.

Caroline Turiano has been living and working abroad for more than a decade now. Hailing from Bicol, the former junior accountant is now working as the Accountant General in the Filipino Institute, mainly documenting the ﬁnancial transactions of the company. She started as a junior accountant in her hometown in Bicol and decided to get out of their province and seek a good-paying job. She ended up working as a junior accountant at the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network’s payable department. In 2009, she has decided to continue her journey by kicking off an overseas journey in Abu Dhabi and shifted to Ras Al Khaimah in the same year until 2020. Aside from having strong teamwork, she said the Filipino Institute has an objective to help Filipinos by giving them an affordable and high-quality education and an opportunity to advance their personal and professional growth.

Succe Behind every creative video content uploaded on the Filipino Institute’s social media platforms is multimedia manager Than Dumas. He is in-charge of conceptualizing video content on all the platforms of the educational institution--from storytelling to production. Jonathan, who has been in the UAE for nearly a year, is enthusiastic about technology, thus he’s tagged the ‘techie guy’ in the ofﬁce. Before starting an overseas journey, he used to work as an online freelancer and video editor. He arrived in Dubai with three years of combined work experience with a major emphasis in information technology support, video editing, photo editing, and ﬁlmmaking which he achieved on a regular basis throughout his professional career. His previous works provided him the opportunity to grow, develop, and advance in the services industry.

He was hired as the multimedia manager for the institution for his keen eye for details and a critical mind, creativity, and interest in ﬁlm and video editing, and his organizational and time management skills.

When asked about the best thing about working in the Filipino Institute, he said the company’s goal to help Filipinos in the Middle East to achieve their goals and giving them the chance to shift to another career path and work on their dream jobs.

Ace Samulde Garing Marketing Consultant An experienced customer service coordinator, Ace Samulde Garing is one of the latest additions to the Filipino Institute family. He is currently the Marketing Consultant of ‘Bayanihan New Media Service’, a company under the umbrella of the Filipino Institute. The media service allows merchant partners to utilize the social media and on-ground platforms of the educational institution. Ace, a graduate of Bachelor of Science and Business Administration Major in Financial Management, described himself as an ‘outgoing and dynamic person’ as he can easily adapt to any changes in the organization and ‘ace’ it. Prior to working at the Filipino Institute, he worked as one of the executive client coordinators at Callix Call Centre Services where he learned how to generate monthly invoices for clients, inventory, contract documentation, and troubleshooting various technical issues, among others. Ace, who is passionate about marketing, has also worked as a fraud detection analyst, customer service representative, and internal trade processor.

Lorenzo Roi Florendo Dean of International Diploma-Dubai

Working in the Filipino Institute, for Lorenzo Roi 'Dean Choj' Florendo, is a little too close to home because he gets to interact with his kabayans and it makes him feel like he never left the Philippines. As the Dean of International Diploma in Dubai campus, he responds to the needs of the students at the Filipino Institute, communicates and plan activities for them. Before embarking on an overseas life, Florendo, a political science graduate, used to work as a political advisor and strategist, and college instructor. He was also involved in various activities that beneﬁted society, including doing charity works, outreach programs, political researches that helped improve the people’s way of living in their province. Despite being new and unfamiliar to Dubai, he already looks forward to working with an organization that gives back to the Filipino community, which he found in the Filipino Institute. Although there are moments where he couldn’t get through an extremely busy situation at work, the smiles worn by the students uplift his mood.

“The mini chit-chats with the students along the corridors, the smiles on the faces of our kabayans every time you see them going to their classes, knowing that most of them are really exhausted after a week-long of work and still they would go to school on their day-off which really proves that we Filipinos are masayahin regardless of any situation that we are facing on our daily lives,” he said when asked what’s the best part about working in the educational institution. One of the things he wants to accomplish in the future is to build his own empire and be the boss of his own. “Focus on your goals and ignore the hecklers, they won’t starve if your plate is empty. Keep pushing to be a better version of yourself, it’s important to have someone to talk to and share what we feel instead of keeping it to ourselves, having the right people around you helps,” Florendo said.

Payawal Dela Cruz Admin Manager-Abu Dhabi Campus As one of the admin managers of the Filipino Institute Abu Dhabi campus, Maryjon Payawal Dela Cruz is tasked to implement and develop policies and procedures to improve operations and functions of the training facility. Maryjon has a passional personality with both admin and operations backgrounds with a verifiable record of meeting and exceeding set targets and performance objectives. A natural communicator, the admin manager also plays a collaborative team player who readily gains respect from colleagues and students through effective rapport building. She is also recognized by her colleagues for her strong work ethic, integrity, drive, and ambition. When asked the best words to describe her, Maryjon said it would be ‘industrious, joyful, reliable, and trustworthy.’ “I am very meticulous with my work and I work very hard. I love to be sociable and I am described as a calm person,” she added. The Filipina has been working in the UAE for two years now. She was exposed to career paths when she turned 16. Prior to working in the Filipino Institute, she also worked as an admin and receptionist in the host country and co-partner for an advertising agency in the Philippines. Part of her long-term plan is to ‘learn more’ and further grow her career and build her own company. “Piece of advice to fellow countrymen is to believe in yourself and work hard towards your dream,” she added. Maryjon believes that a dream without action and a goal has no opportunity to come true.

Self-motivated, persuasive, and optimistic--this is how Eleonor M. Retotar, one of the active Filipino Institute deans on the Abu Dhabi campus, describes herself. As the dean of the campus, she is in charge of achieving the mission of the educational institution, which is to help the Filipinos overseas acquire an affordable yet quality education.

A single mother with three kids, the dean has been working in the country for four years now. Recalling her first work, Dean Leny, as what the trainers and students dearly call her, landed in a ‘not-so-good-job’ in 2016 that prompted her to find better opportunities. A college graduate with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and a Masters in Business Administration, Dean Leny worked as a freelance for various companies and was paid on a daily basis until she found the Filipino Institute which paved the way for a better job. “The best thing about working with the Filipino Institute is its legitimacy. The Filipino Institute is one of the few institutions that offer a wide range of courses from attested and stamped by the releasing country--the UAE. And that makes me feel proud working in Filipino Institute,” she added. The dean of the Filipino Institute is also imparting her knowledge in accounting as a trainer-volunteer. “That is another thing that inspires me a lot. Despite the work schedules they have, fellow OFWs still manage to study and be able to finish their chosen course, with the belief that they could eventually use this knowledge to enhance themselves or could even be used to redirect their career path,” she added.

Life in the Philippines Dean Leny, before becoming a full-ﬂedged disciple of the academe, has worked as a regional sales manager for an insurance company in the Ilocos region. Prior to working abroad, she also worked as a bank teller and was promoted to remittance examiner in one of the largest banks in the Philippines. While working as a full-time employee, she was also an active member of various organizations, including being a member of the Sangguniang Kababaihan sa Barangay (SKB), Womens Club, RIC, and catholic choir to name a few. She was also part of an organization that provided livelihood programs to their villagers by monitoring and supervising the program given by the government. The task also included free seminars and training that generated additional income for non-working women in the village.

Raising three kids alone, according to her, was not an easy task as the stakes are higher. Although achieving a balance as a single parent can seem nearly impossible, she has still able to give them a brighter future.

Her eldest child, 25, is now working with the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP), her second child, 23, is now working with the accounts department of Mitshubishi Corporation in the Philippines. Meanwhile, her youngest, 14, is currently in the eighth grade. “It needs strong determination coupled with hard work and prayers,” she added. Although negativities that come along the way are expected, she considers them a challenge.

Trebb Gomez Social Media Manager

After years of contemplating, Trebb Gomez has made a career leap that he considered one of the biggest decisions he has ever faced. For more than three years, he spent his time in the F&B sector, working as a restaurant manager, mainly making improvements to the running of the business and developing a Dubai-based Filipino restaurant. From manning a team of restaurant workers, Trebb is now overseeing all social media marketing campaigns as the Social Media Manager of the Filipino Institute. Succe Almost seven years ago, Mariefe Lazo embarked on an overseas life because a former friend predicted that she won’t progress in life and will be stuck forever in the Philippines. Proving her friend’s assumption wrong, she exhausted everything and made her personal and family’s life better by working tirelessly abroad. Mariefe, who is now working as the Property Custodian at the Filipino Institute Dubai, had to work as a household service worker first for an Emirati family in the UAE. She worked for the family for two years. After finishing the employment contract, she went back to the Philippines and directly apply as a cleaner for a cleaning agency based in Dubai. For more than four years, Mariefe worked as a cleaner--jumping from one commercial establishment and residential house to another. “Life was hard back then. It was exhausting, but the silver lining was that I get to work with Filipinos as well,” she said. While working in the facility management company, she also volunteered at the Filipino Institute as their room taker.

Valdez, a former librarian at a university in Manila for three years, has been here abroad for more than five years now. “But I can say that I am still learning. What drives me every day? I always believe that change is inevitable, but without change, progress is impossible,” he said. Some of our graduates have gone on to professionals in their own ﬁeld. I know that their experience here in the Filipino Institute has impacted their lives in some way,” Mrs. Camille said. Since the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted almost everything across the globe, the virtual world has come to the rescue. The academe has shifted its base to virtual platforms to conduct classes online, thus, the Filipino Institute started to navigate to the new normal. “The virtual classroom technology enables our students to participate in everything that is taking place within the live classroom having effective communication through Zoom or Google Meet, and of course with the full support of the employees, we were able to manage the challenge,” she said.

Dean of Filipino Institute-Qatar Antonette Concepcion affirmed that the Filipino Institute has paved the way for her long-time dream to serve and be part of the academe industry. For the last 27 years, she was working in the hotel industry where she started from a rank-in-file position up to the managerial position. After graduating from college, Antoinette had worked in a three-star hotel starting from cashiering, front desk receptionist, to an F&B coordinator. “I have tried almost all the different positions in the hotel and I would say I really worked hard to achieve what I have now,” she said adding that she became the front office manager and five years later became sales manager.

Making several attempts for an overseas job under various industries, the Cebuana tried her luck in UAE but decided to let go after a month. She tried again to work in Australia, however, after a few months, she had to go back due to visa restrictions. In 2009, she was offered to work in a hotel in Qatar which she gladly accepted. “I must say I am really destined into this industry which is one of my great accomplishments that gives me great satisfaction,” the law graduate said.

Passionate volunteer Since Antoinette’s college days, she has already been actively participating in various organizations and community undertakings. She was a part of the Junior Jaycees, a Red Cross volunteer, and an admin for a sorority and brotherhood organization. In Qatar, she continues her involvement with different organizations and outreach programs to be of service as much as she can. The hotelier acts as the adviser to The Filipino Community (TFC), President of Guardians Republican International Inc (GRII), Bayanihan ng mga Manggagawa sa Konstruction ng Qatar (BMKQ)-Education and Training Committee. Working in the Filipino Institute as a dean and a trainer has paved the way for her long-time dream to serve and be part of the academe industry. “Teaching makes a difference. Though the Filipino Institute, I am able to share my knowledge, creativity, and passion most especially to my kababayans in Qatar, inspiring them to improve their lives through education. Antoinette, who has been with the Filipino Institute since 2016, said she plans to continue her responsibilities for as long as it takes to ensure its continuous development.

Dominique Estrella Admin Manager of Qatar Campus A wise man once said that adaptability is being able to adjust to any situation at any time. As for Angeline Dominique Estrella, one of the deans at the Filipino Institute Qatar campus, being versatile and adaptive are her greatest assets. A Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service and a Master of Arts in Public Administration holder, she said she is able to easily adapt to certain scenarios and communicate with other people without a struggle. Angeline has started working in the educational institution in 2019 though she never had any teaching background despite being part of a family of teachers. The call to share her knowledge and her expertise with her fellowmen had inspired her to teach.

“The experienced I gained in the Filipino Institute helped me to develop versatility. As a volunteer-trainer, I find joy in teaching,” she said adding that being employed in the Filipino Institute is both tough and rewarding most especially when people around her appreciate even the littlest things she has contributed. Before moving to Qatar, she worked as a customer service representative for three years. Meanwhile, Angeline arrived in Qatar in 2018 and had worked as a customer data encoder for a leading telecommunications company on a project basis. “Joining the institution has given me a new perspective on life. Being with the Filipino Institute for more than a year has helped me to step out of my comfort zone and to grow professionally. At the age of 20, Ryan Namia, the editor-in-chief of The Global Filipino Magazine, has started his overseas Filipino worker (OFW) journey in UAE with nothing but a college diploma. No work experience, no background in working in an office setup, nothing at all. Started from scratch, the young Filipino landed a journalism job for a Filipino newspaper in the host country. The tough job and pressing work environment have taught him how to survive and fight many battles in life that he thought he can never conquer. His job rotated from interviewing normal Filipinos, visiting Filipino and Hollywood celebrities, to top diplomats in the country. The work experience has further developed his interpersonal skills and how to effectively deal with various types of people. Two years after finishing his employment contract with the publication, he worked as a content creator for one of the most followed Facebook pages in the UAE. There, he was dealing with food and hotel reviews, social media management, among others. This job has further nurtured his skills in creating viral content. Soon after spending almost three years in the media sector, he abandoned it and worked as an admin for a facilities management in the emirate. His work includes creating a schedule for the maintenance workers on a daily basis, create invoices for potential clients, and almost all paperwork-related there is in the office. He thought it was making him happy, but his heart and mind are still longing for the previous work. As Godâ€™s plan coincided with him, the Filipino Institute, earlier this year, was searching for a person to man The Globa Filipino Magazine. Ryan was in-charge of the write-up of the magazine online and through his experience in creating content, the Facebook page which has initially over 3,000 page likes, has grown to more than 36,000 in a span of six months. The Facebook page has grown so much that its website got two million page views per month.

Gimmarie Bassig-Reyes Dean Empowers Filipinos In Bahrain to Secure Opportunities Overseas Filipino Institute of Bahrain’s Academic Director and Dean Gimmarie Bassig-Reyes has been living in the Kingdom for about two years now. Aside from being the dean of the institution, she also teaches human resource and admin classes and does supervisory management. Prior to working as an educator in Bahrain, she spent about nine years in the United Arab Emirates from 2008 to 2017, wherein her first work was a procurement officer at the Arabtec Construction LLC. Reyes was then transferred to Tyco Fire and Security in the capital as a procurement supervisor. Before finally moving to Bahrain, she resigned from the procurement supervisor post and was hired to another company, Al Jabal Group, as personal assistant to the group chief executive officer for almost five years. Reyes chose the Filipino Institute in Bahrain as the school focuses on empowering Filipino workers abroad by educating and exposing them to opportunities overseas. The school has established branches in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and UAE. "It's obvious that many new overseas workers find it hard to adapt and begin to make ends meet. Succe Facilities Maintenance Worker-Saint Zita Cleaning Services Believing that Dubai is a place where dreams are converted into reality every day, Steve Maquie Ang set foot in the emirate two years ago in hopes that he would find his purpose. Following his mother’s footsteps in the emirate, the 22-year-old facility maintenance worker at the Saint Zita Cleaning Services understands that life can be a bumpy road and one can only learn from mistakes and failures. Previously, Maquie used to work for a couple of establishments in the host country that refused to process his employment visa. He worked as a supermarket clerk in Jumeirah Lakes Tower and food server for a Filipino restaurant in IBN Batuta Mall. “Despite the work permit issue, I am still thankful for them. Without them, I wouldn’t have grown and learned many things in the F&B and supermarket industries,” he added.

From 2017 until 2018, he also worked as a waiter at the Manila Manor Hotel and sales associate for American Star Apparel Philippines Inc. He said that once he’s able to earn enough money, he will continue and finish studying to secure a degree and boost his career.
