H

ard work is a kind of love language for Anthony Galeria Gacis, a 49year-old training manager and a legendary overseas Filipino worker (OFW). Educating people for Anthony is one of his greatest passion, and although he went through different jobs, at the end of the day, he will always go back to his root, which is teaching.

At a young age, Anthony was already an achiever and a government academic scholar.

Although he was granted a full scholarship during his college years, he still needed to work while studying to support his family’s financial needs. Anthony never ceases to provide his family with a full-support and unconditional love.

While studying in college, he had to work in food chains. Jollibee has been the foundation of his restaurant industry career. He worked at five Jollibee branches--Kalentong, Cherry Foodarama, Manuela, SM Megamall, Marikina.

At that time, he was the person taking responsibilities in the dining and counter section and training new employees of the store.

After finishing college, since he had a great foundation in the restaurant industry, he worked as a supervisor in Global Amusement City at SM Megamall, as a shift manager in Chowking- Zapote, and as a server of TGI Friday’s Makati. Along with his impeccable performance and love for work, TGI Friday chose him to be part of the TGIF Worldwide Training Program.

Welcome Aboard In June 1996, Anthony arrived in Dubai as a server at TGI Friday’s Crowne Plaza, Sheik Zayed Road. After some months, he was promoted as an international trainer for TGIF Middle East, where he became part of all the openings of TGIF stores in the Middle East before he left the company in 2003. This multi-awarded employee decided to move to another company in Kuwait and served as supervisor and was promoted as a unit training manager. Eventually, he got the position of general training manager for Ruby Tuesday Middle East. In both TGIF and Ruby Tuesday, he received multiple awards for his impressive performances.

In 2016, he decided to move back to the UAE to work for SFC Group as a training manager for its restaurant concepts. Currently, he is responsible for the training department for the restaurant division in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaima.

“My reason to move is to enhance my career in multi-restaurant training and to start a Corporate career in UAE – a place that I believe can open a larger enhancement in my field,” he added.

Aside from being an achiever, his passion for teaching and education keeps him moving.

Helping people to be educated and wellequipped is part of his mission.

“I love teaching people. I believe that education is the key to anyone’s success through my job, not only that I am getting paid

and helping people worldwide to find their place in the restaurant career and be successful through my training. I feel bad if somebody is not doing their job well because they are not trained well. I believe that when I help one trainee to be successful in their careers, I am supporting their families, too, that my trainees are responsible for, “ he uttered.

Learning through experience Upon receiving a lot of achievements and recognition, Anthony will always look back on the past experiences that made him strong, diligent, and excellent. Struggles were pretty typical for a dreamer like him, but these battles made him flourish as an individual. Anthony experienced culture shock, homesickness, career competition, and values breakdown like other overseas Filipino workers. But having these things, helped him to trust God wholeheartedly.

“The society around me helped me adjust with all these struggles, as well as constant communication with my family and always praying and calling for God’s support. I have made some good friends that listen and remind me to be good. My managers and co-workers are excellent partners and always there to guide and help out,” he said.

He always believes that there are motivating factors that make a person great, and those are struggles. These challenges made him realize that whatever happens, he must not give up.

Everything has a reason, and putting God in life makes the light so bright.

Mr. Dong and Ms. Mary Beth Dumilag Debt-burden OFW family now spearheads cookware business in UAE

By Ryan Namia Waiting for the ‘plot-twist’ in their lives, the couple was introduced to Saladmaster business program. At first, they didn’t believe in the power of the company that has already transformed the lives of millions around the world. The majority of their friends were having second thoughts and discouraging them from joining the program, adding that their investment would only go to waste.

here is only one way to get rid of debt, and that is by facing it head-on. This has been the scheme that Mr. Dong and Ms. Mary Beth Dumilag–both former overseas Filipino workers in the United Kingdom–adopted when they were saddled with almost never-ending debt.

Having four kids and working as a full-time head healthcare manager, Mary said she and her husband had struggled to make ends meet, worst pay their cash loans and credit card.

Faced with piled bills, they went to a point where they almost lost their shelter.

So, the Dumilags did it on a part-time basis in March of 2011 until their trust build-up two years after earning incentives through referral and cook shows.

Countless sleepless nights, almost eight-hour drive to possible clients, coupled with sacrifices and hardships, the Filipino couple finally sold their first cookware and received more than their combined salaries. Due to this positive result, they strived more to do referrals and gathered live cooking shows and exhibitions.

The Dumilags can finally say that their hardships have paid off. With the success of their business venture, they were able to clear their credit and secure their shelter.

Without hesitation, they’ve decided to do it on a full-time basis and became Saladmaster entrepreneurs in February 2012. Both of them quit their eight to 10 full-time jobs.

Starting afresh, they penetrated Dubai in 2015.

Today, they have their own dream cars and house with zero credit from banks or anyone.

Eventually, they established the Saladmaster Empower Lyf Dubai which offers an innovative cooking method without the use of oil and less consumption of fats that helps achieve one’s goal in obesity management and prevent other diseases.

Their growing empire has now 30 salespeople and 10 affiliates and partners closely working with them.

Mary is now the CEO and president while Dong is the CFO of their business.

Reaching his dreams requires a lot of patience in different challenges and struggles. These adversities made his life turn 360 degrees that helped him to be a strong, independent individual.

One of the biggest struggles that he encountered was when his mom moved to Spain in 2019. At that time, he adjusted himself to living alone. He felt anxious about life while trying to befriend himself.

The days of adjustment made him stronger that helped him to trust and love himself more.

Adrian is a communications graduate in Far Eastern University-Manila, Philippines, and a previous director of integrated marketing of International Youth United. His passion for media creates a leeway for him to become an advocate of community development.

“I remembered during the first months of being independent overseas, every time I wanted to go back to the Philippines, I would go to Dubai Mall and order my favorite iced coffee in Starbucks, enjoy my beverage outside, and I will stare at Burj Khalifa, and I say, five years ago, pinapangarap mo lang ‘to Adrian.

Working overseas Right after Adrian graduated from college, his mom sponsored his tourist visa to Dubai, UAE. His landing in Dubai has never been easy, although he had his mother at his side. In 2018, Adrian started his first job as public relations and social media executive for a well-known company in Dubai. He worked with Dubaibased Filipino fashion icons, Michael Cinco and Furne Amato.

After some time, he decided to look for another company, where he found KOJ Interiors, where he is currently affiliated.

“My pageantry started way back in 2017 in my 11th year of high school. My teachers were eager that I join since they were confident in my looks and my speaking ability. Back then, I was not as confident, but since they believed in me, I decided to muster up the courage and believe in myself too,” he said.

His principles and values create a holistic personality within him. Upon trying the first pageant in his life, the stars lit up his way as he was hailed as the first runner up. Moments after, Ramzy felt very passionate about joining pageants; at that moment, he tried to be part of a regional pageant named the Man of the Philippines-UAE in 2019. Unfortunately, that very moment was not for him.

“I was a bit sad after that; I took a break after that. People convinced me to try again, and so I did. I was like, why not. I wanted to regain the confidence I once lost,” Ramzy uttered.

The loss never halted Ramzy to chase his dreams; right after a year, he eventually joined once again the said pageant, and for the second

Ramzy, though a young achiever, never forgets his mom at the end of the day. According to him, aside from his supporters and friends, his mother is the most supportive person in his journey.

Ramzy’s life is not that easy. For him, his experiences went through blood, sweat, and tears. It takes bunches of courage to lift his chin again to regain his former self. He even felt that he had lost his confidence and went through mental battles to make sure that he would be okay. Luckily, he also has friends and relatives that always tap his back and carry him to stand and try once again.

“I am fortunate because I have my friends, my family. Who were very supportive. And it’s because of their love and support; I was able to keep moving forward,” he said.

Despite the challenges that he encountered, Ramzy takes it as motivation to promote his advocacy and inspire other people. He used it as his asset not only in pageantry but also in school, for being an ambassador, a host, an athlete, and a life coach.

Working for mental health awareness is the closest advocacy in his heart because he experienced his own battles. But one thing that he will never forget upon pursuing his work of kindness is that God is giving him so many blessings that is why he needs to follow his will and live life to the fullest.

“With the title I currently have, it’s amazing how I can inspire people using my voice. Since I am a mental health advocate, I want to voice those who can speak for themselves. I was also able to make new friends along the way because I know fulfilling my advocacy is not an easy task,” he added.

All fulfilling moments are worth waiting for, and whatever struggles a person may have, they shall pass. According to him, sometimes obstacles are just along the way, but remember, God is always there to help; what a person needs to do is just to keep moving forward.

n the age of internet calls with cameraless Nokia, Ericsson handsets before wi-fi, Viber, Messenger, and WhatsApp, JTB and Easi telephone cards made three-minute home calls cheaper at night Brunei’s Post Of-fice landline.

On August 31, 1990, Antonio Alabastro, a 72-year-old famed journalist, arrived in oil-rich Negara Brunei Darussalam. They transformed the weekly community paper into the country’s leading English-language daily newspaper as the first Filipino journalists in Borneo Bulletin.

“In August 1990, I came to this Islamic country south of Mindanao with another Filipino, and

The retirement of veteran journalist

His annual apostolic duty prompted him and his wife Teresita to return to the oil town of Kuala Belait, where his family members reside and work when he retired in 2014. In the Sultanate, the 2019 Covid19 pandemic kept him safe in isolation for nearly 800 days. He maintains in touch with the Philippine Embassy and his old newspaper, the Borneo Bulletin, during his annual travels.

He lasted for two and a half decades in Brunei, where there are more automobiles than people, without having his vehicle to drive or ride in because his family needs the money more than my luxury ride.

Following him, up to 20 members of his extended family, including his wife and two children, were able to come and work to Brunei. Only two oil and gas engineers and their families remain in Brunei as a result of localization.

He has met and written about Philippine presidents visiting Brunei as a Philippine Embassy Watcher from 1990, from Citizen Cory Aquino to her son Noy Noy Aquino, President Duterte’s state visit, and the recent 2021 Asean Summit Meeting, which he attended.

“In retirement, I document the Philippine scene for my weekly Manila newspaper column and write about captains of industry on assignment for The Manila Times,” he uttered.

t has been a long and arduous journey for accomplished musician Marcus Ch Dela Peña. One that began in Sixth Grade when he envisioned his first melody to the struggles he faced in his hometown of Manila, Philippines, producing music for the songs he had written.

But his persistence paid off.

With the release of several self-produced albums, the singer-songwriter, producer is now the successful founder of musivv.com, a platform for independent artists and music creatives.

Through this innovative platform, Marcus created an initiative called JumpSTARt, with the aim of producing singles for emerging, talented musicians who do not have the means to record their own songs and get noticed.

The initiative quickly garnered praise from local music industry experts for its goal of finding what Marcus calls “diamonds in the rough.”

Acting as musivv’s talent scout, JumpSTARt is currently in its second season, with the program seeking to discover and develop untapped artists by providing a much-needed gateway into the music industry. Marcus has further bolstered the program’s aims by also enlisting the help of Grammy-nominated producer Beau Vallis too.

Clearly, Marcus’s journey is commendable, borne from struggle and perseverance. His days in The Philippines saw him sleeping on a friend’s couch, a time when he learned Cake Walk - a Digital Audio Workstation of the 90s -after piecing beats together using Fruity Loops to produce a decent demo.

“I enjoyed the learning process,” he says. “I remember using a computer gaming mic to record vocals. It was a very challenging season but the passion in me kept me going.”

Armed with a rough demo and an inextinguishable fire for music, Marcus eventually released his first rap metal single in the Philippines. After relocating to Dubai in 2005 for work, Marcus’s dreams of releasing an album seemed remote.

Yet only a year after arriving in Dubai, things fell into place and he was able to live his dream of releasing his first full-on album. This time via a local radio station that catered to promoting independent artists.

And the rest as they say is history.

Now with musivv.com, Marcus is giving back to the local music community by providing aspiring recording artists the chance they deserve.

“JumpSTARt gives me a sense of fulfillment in being able to connect with budding artists in the UAE and paving a way for them to make their dreams come true,” he says.

For those seeking to achieve great things with their life, Marcus advises: “Stay focused and be patient.

Good things come to those who wait. Trees grow slowly but they stand the test of time.”

othing daunts Brother Ronell John Patrocenio when he decided to work as a religious missionary in Argentina.

This Filipino descent brother was from Maguindanao in the southern part of the Philippines.

Brother Ronell, 31, is a Claretian Missionary who is making a difference in creating Christian communities and sharing the Word of God in the most rural areas of the world.

He has been serving the Catholic church for 15 years and currently continuing his studies and mission in Argentina.

Filipino in Argentina finds purpose in spreading the words of God

outside of the Philippines, the first task was to learn the language (Spanish) immediately to be able to communicate and, of course, to express me. The first months were so challenging. I had to adapt. Perhaps one thing that helped me a lot was to realize that I was no longer in the Philippines, and I had to accept it,” he said According to him, learning a new language and culture takes more and more effort to adapt. The disposition and willingness need ample time to be in the right place. Currently, he is working in a school and parish in Buenos Aires, building a stronger community of Christians in South America.

“Surely, our life as a missionary is always with the people. At least here, we try to give them different formations, catechisms, or apostolates (sometimes we prepare and provide them food, try to help them find new jobs, offer them education, etc.).

With this in mind, I will happily share with you our way of life as a missionary,” he proudly said.

Back in the year 2014, the superiors of his congregation asked him if he was willing to be sent to another part of the world. Since he said his yes, he was assigned in Uruguay for two years and five years in Argentina.

Filipino Missionary Brother Ronell entered the seminary at a young age in 2006 to pursue his dream to become a priest. He spent a lot of time praying, studying, and being in the mission areas to serve the people and give them spiritual food. After a few years, he was sent to South America for a greater mission.

“As a student in formation and as a missionary

or rather trying to create relationships with our people. I think that is our main goal or role as a missionary. It sounds simple, but it has a powerful message,” he shared.

Before going to Argentina, this man of God worked in the slums of Quezon City under the Parish church he belongs with. His primary mission was to form a basic ecclesial community (BEC) in the squatters’ areas.

Moreover, aside from this mission, he also needs to study Theology at the same time in Ateneo de Manila University as part of his formation.

God’s calling Brother Ronell believes that his passion for helping people and spreading the words of God is his mission in life. Establishing an excellent enterprise with God is the most fulfilling part of his work.

According to him, serving God and his people voluntarily is not an easy task. It needs determination, patience, and motivation. He also added that his life as a missionary tested his faith in God, but one thing is for sure, he never stopped in the middle of the doubts; instead, he kept moving until he finally found his purpose.

“In any life or career we are into, we can encounter many struggles. Or there are times that we realize how complicated things are. I think it is always there, and it is up to us if we are stuck in that moment or decide to get up and continue what we have started,” he said.

Despite all the difficulties he encountered in the mission, he still wants to continue following God’s plan and serve the universal church throughout his life.

“As I grow as a missionary, I think one of the most satisfying experiences that I could have and I could do is building and establishing relationships www.theglobalfilipinomagazine.com

AE-based Filipina achiever Sharina Bertiz Manaog is considered one of the most successful Filipino young professionals in the UAE. This 24-year-old woman of action is currently creating a big name in the world of academe and branding.

Even before graduating from the University with a specialization in Human Capital, Sharina worked as a PR Assistant with one of the most sought-after PR Firms in Dubai. She also traversed the communication world and became a communication manager with the first and only female-business accelerator in UAE. That opportunity keeps her fire burning by promoting women’s empowerment and self-confidence.

Aside from being a teacher and a marketing professional, she is also passionate about different extra-curricular activities. She is one of the presenters of Emirates Loves Philippines and a co-composer of the Expo 2020 Dubai Philippine Pavilion theme song.

Growing up in UAE

According to her, growing up in UAE, the Philippines became her abroad. Although raised in another country, Sharina never forgets her roots by serving the Filipino community in different emirates.

Aside from working so much in the four sides of the office, she makes sure that she gives an equal priority in building her career outside work.

Sharina’s journey in the UAE started when she was six-year-old with her mother already in Dubai and her father serving the military in the United States of America. At that time, she had to travel alone, going to UAE at a young age.

Since then, it’s been a decade since she went back to the Philippines.

The young successful Filipina hosted exclusive events such as the Dakilang Bayani Awards, Philippine Business Council Events, and Philippine Consulate General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates events, among others.

“It took me 10 years straight of being in the country before actually seeing the Philippines again. My journey here is more than being a young professional but very much about being a third-culture-kid who experienced childhood, youth, and experiencing

“Sometimes the biggest battles are the most silent ones; I am grateful for the number of people I can count on one hand who stood by me, held my hand, and simply listened to the cries of my heart,” Sharina reflected.

According to Sharina, her main goal is to have her own business, help unemployed people, and provide a livelihood to those in need. She also wants to continue advocating for mental health literacy.

Jerwin Ebora ‘The key to success is perseverance despite setbacks’

erwin Ebora arrived in the UAE in 2010 with dreams and faith in himself that one day he’ll have the success that he created and imagined in mind. Hailing from a humble barrio in Batangas City, he is motivated to broaden his horizon.

Today, the 32-year-old Filipino is the corporate learning and quality manager of Ishraq Hospitality, a hospitality sector based in the UAE that owns many hotels.

With a healthcare background prior to moving abroad, Jerwin’s leadership skill was honed when he served as SK chairman in their locale.

Having served as a public servant, he still wanted to do something better with his future-not only for himself but for his family as well-that is why he decided to leave the Philippines for Dubai through a placement agency.

At that time, he was looking to progress his career, and an international move was likely to give him experiences that are difficult to match at home.

Upon arrival to the UAE, he worked as a sales staff for Mister Baker in Sharjah, Dubai’s nearby emirate. Despite all the hardships he had to face, his motivation to reach greater heights did not waver. Six months after getting employed, he was promoted to hygiene and food safety supervisor.

“I was doubtful at that time since I do not have immersive hospitality experience, but through all the learnings that I have acquired since I started working, it sort of gave me the confidence to propel forward with this post,” he said.

With supportive colleagues coupled with determination, he delivered and exceeded all expectations that he was promoted to quality manager after three years in the post.

“It was an incredible experience for me, so incredible that I stayed with the company for six years. It brought me to places that I never thought I could ever go coming from a small barangay--it was really humbling,” Jerwin added.

Living overseas, shifting career amidst a raging pandemic Jerwin considers himself as one of the lucky ones for being able to shift his career amidst a raging pandemic. He loves that his current work allows him to educate different nationalities in a very diverse team and audit eight hotels that he handles daily.

“It is fulfilling that I can impact my little knowledge that I learned throughout my professional career experience,” he said.

Despite living abroad for over a decade now, Jerwin said it’s a challenging experience as

one has to adapt to a new culture and a new way of life. He added that immersing oneself in a foreign environment requires flexibility and determination.

“That might not be easy at the beginning, but it is a great life lesson. You will find yourself becoming more independent and will gain the strength of character,” he said, adding that what he loved the most was that he’s able to taste and eat different kinds of food as he is a foodie himself.

A single father of two, he plans to stay overseas for the next couple of years, save enough money, and build a lasting source of income back home and run a business. If time permits, he would continue studying again and become a doctor, a dream job since he was a kid.

Enjoying life to the fullest is the philosophy of Wilson De Jesus. This 34-year-old director in an SPV subsidiary based in Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) created his fate to become a successful expat in the UAE. His experiences and challenges abroad brought him to fulfillment and victory.

Wilson moved to Dubai in 2011 and looked forward to practicing his profession as an accountant. Unfortunately, it has never been easy for him to suffice his expectation for both work and finance in his first year in UAE. Although challenges were ahead of him, Wilson chose to become resilient and trust God’s plan for him.

This man always believed that working abroad has never been easy, but there will always be its rewards at the end of the challenges.

“I considered working abroad because of the distinctive challenges and the fruitful outcomes attached to them. Career competition abroad is tremendous and challenging, but if you are focused and determined, the rewards are massive,” Wilson said.

Before working abroad, Wilson served as an accountant in 2008 at a law firm in the Philippines while in second-year college.

After working in that company for three years, he decided to move abroad in 2011.

According to Wilson, he wants to retire at 45 and dedicate his entire time to his family and friends. At 45, the investments he started years ago and continued to develop should be able to provide and sustain the requirements for living for his family and extend his blessing to others. He wants to establish a charitable institution in the Philippines.

“Preparing for the future is good, but don’t forget that our present was also the future of our past. Enjoy life now,” he ended.

Dubai-based Filipino who lost his job due to the Covid-19 pandemic has invested AED200 for a small business is now a boss of his own.

Marvin Fer Martin, 29, recounted when he arrived in the UAE in 2014 on a visit visa. His first job was as a service crew at a popular coffee shop in the country. Jumping from one company to another, he gained sufficient work experience and equipped him to be more competitive.

When the pandemic struck the world, his employment was also affected–leaving him jobless. For Martin, this was the exact time to execute his tie dye business.

His desire to be a businessman started when he started following a YouTuber who coaches business-minded people with minimum capital.

He said that the YouTuber, Arvin Orubia, guides his business idea to prosper.

“Since my mindset was to become an entrepreneur, my life has been changed,” he said, adding that he also provides business advice for free to those who are willing to venture into business.

Martin recalled when no one believed in his business idea after failing from various investments.

“Even my wife did not trust me because I failed in the business. Then that’s the time I met Arvin Orubia who taught me to start a real business with limited capital,” he said.

He also added that whenever he encounters problem-related to his business, he would ask the members of the Facebook group Kasosyo Malupet Group, which is headed by Orubia.

“My next plan is to scale my business to the next level so we can give the opportunity to my family and friends, and build a reputation in the Philippines,” he said.

man of greatness and intelligence like Ronald Allan Magbunga is considered the new hero of innovation of 21st century research. Dr. Ronald finished his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and currently serving the Philippine Normal University (PNU) as the Vice President for Research, Planning, and Quality Assurance.

Education is very close to the heart of Dr. Roland, and in fact, he has been employed in PNU for more than 30 years serving and educating the youth.

He started as an instructor and got promoted in various positions until he became a full professor.

Aside from being an educator, he is also a member of a charismatic catholic organization called Bukas Loob ng Diyos. Together with him is his loving wife during the services for the past ten years.

onfidence is always the key for Ahmed Yousif El Sharif, a professional dental surgeon, entrepreneur, and pageant king. Ahmed was raised in a multicultural environment. Aside from being of Filipino- Arab descent, he is also an American citizen currently with his mother in Dubai for a business.

This man loves to create dreams and aspire for greater heights for his future and family. Ahmed’s dream of becoming a medical practitioner concurred with his goals and morals, which became a leeway to uplift his confidence to reach his aspiration.

Aside from his unstoppable dreams, his passion for joining pageants also drives him to become a mature and goal-oriented individual. Becoming an influencer creates a road for him to build connections and be friendly.

Future-driven doctor-entrepreneur Dreaming of becoming a medical practitioner for Ahmed was inculcated since he was a child.

Although he had no particular reason behind that dream when he was a kid, he still nourished it through the help of his mother, a professional nurse and his medical practitioner family members who uplift his spirit to be inspired of the field.

“As a child, I was always asked; What do you want to be when you grow up? I always knew that I wanted to be in the medical field and help people; It was later on that I decided that I wanted to specialize in dental surgery,” Doctor Ahmed recalled.

According to Ahmed, he will cherish two scenarios in his life forever; the first was when he received his diploma as a doctor, and the second was when he treated his first patient. Every doctor might have the same feeling as Ahmed, especially during the nerve-racking moment of practicing the profession for the first time.

Moreover, aside from being a dental surgeon, he also manages his family business in Al Muraqqabat, Deira, Dubai. This man managed to bring about two companies; one is a restaurant, and the other is a medical supplies distributor.

“Establishing the family business and studying for my profession was happening simultaneously…I was able to learn a lot in helping in our family business,” he said.

Passion makes perfect “I am not perfect. I am far from it. Yes, I have accomplished many things in my life, but I still go through plenty of struggles. The one thing that I have learned is that when life makes you fall to your knees, learn to get back up,” he uttered.

Despite being an achiever, Ahmed has lots of insecurities and obstacles in life. This guy of integrity has never been out of balance because he tends to manage his emotions.

“At every turn of my life, there were harsh obstacles that put me down financially, emotionally, mentally, and physically which always made me want to give up on everything.

I have learned that life has a way of making you miserable, but that does not mean that you let it

overwhelm you completely but instead fight for the balance, “he uttered.

Ahmed’s balance was hooked up by his passion for building his confidence through joining an international pageant. He won as an Ambassador of Unity in Man of the Universe. And that title helped him to express himself better and become a more confident person.

“The most significant aspect of the pageants I joined was the connections and bonds I made with new people from different parts of the world.

I realized that despite people being raised with different cultures and beliefs, they can still have so much in common,” he realized.

Sense of fulfillment Ahmed said that his philosophy in life is to stay morally upright, to respect and gain respect. He also wants to become a friend to everyone and help other people, especially children, regardless of color, culture, or race.

“Being in service with my fellow humans at the end of the day gives the different king of satisfaction,” he added.

At this moment, he is looking forward to unlocking his next goal of establishing his clinic through the help of the learnings he gained as a doctor, entrepreneur, and pageant king.

Ahmed’s confidence and determination to create his empire make him the best conqueror of dreams and aspirations. And that makes him a king.

hen Laila Enriquez Lising was a child, she was raised to be an independent person. When she met a severe motorbike accident in 2008, she was bed-ridden--unable to move forward in life.

A year after recuperating from the accident that scarred her life, Laila applied as a management trainee in a supermarket that opened her door to apply in SM Supermall as a customer service supervisor. These experiences, according to her, made her realize that she can be better and that everything has a purpose. Some of the positions she filled in the Philippines were service crew, cashier, sales associate, and a pump attendant at a gasoline station.

After gaining work experience in the Philippines, she believed she was already equipped to up her game. In 2011, she tried her luck in Dubai. Her first job was as a merchandizer in a hypermarket.

Consistently excelling in work, she decided to apply as a team leader in the same company and got the promotion she deserved.

experience wherein you must fight all situations, especially during this pandemic time where I must take care of my staff and my customers all at the same time,” she added.

The Abu Dhabi-based overseas Filipino worker (OFW) said that working overseas is not always colorful as there were some instances wherein she already wanted to give up. “I cried so many times, for being bullied, being ignored, so many times I felt that I am not worthy, but I choose to fight. I choose to show them that I am not that weak,” she said.

Getting bullied and rising up The Filipina recalled how a colleague hit her head as a jest which pissed her off.

When she thought of fighting back, she would repeatedly think about what would happen if she engaged in a fight.

With all the experiences she has acquired, she thought of exploring more career opportunities by applying to another company. Reaping what she sowed, she got the position as an assistant store manager in another supermarket that led to her current job post--she is now the branch manager of Grandoise Supermarket LLC. “What I enjoy about my current work right now is I get to work with various nationalities and learn about their cultures. To be able to understand them one by one, being their coach, mentor, and adviser is a gratifying job for me,” she said.

Ma. Kimberly Fay Adlawan ‘Never discourage yourself’: FI student passes medical coding exam after second try

M

a. Kimberly Fay Adlawan is a graduate of Business Administration, a degree that focuses on compilations and analyses with no subjects related to anatomy and physiology.

Despite this circumstance, in 2020, she started to take another path by making a decision to invest in improving herself which led her to enrolling herself in a medical coding course at the Filipino Institute.

“Instead of spending my leisure time going out, I sacrificed my one day off,” she said, adding that her day off was only every Friday.

She took the Friday class from 5pm to 8pm to cope up with all the medical terms that she had to learn and soak them up into her memory.

Filled with the required knowledge, by the time she completed the course, she decided to take the AAPC exam and be a certified professional coder (CPC) last August 28 this year.

“I knew I was suffering from stress and depression as I was trying so hard to balance my work and my preparation for the exam,” Kimberly said.

At that moment, she did not get her high hopes, and soon after, she knew that she did not pass the exam on the first try.

Filled with enthusiasm and positivity, the result did not discourage her to give it another try so she immediately scheduled herself to retake the examination for medical coders.

“At that point, I learned from my mistakes so I tracked my time wisely and gave more time for myself to relax and relieve from the stress I suffered,” she said.

After working on her full-time job, she was taking at least two to three hours of sleep before opening her books and refreshing her memory. During her rest days, he used to answer different questions especially those cases with long diagnoses that can always take too much time during the exam.

On October 29, she prepared herself that whatever the result will be, she will accept it.

“One notification popped up in my stating that the result of the exam is already out. I was really nervous to the point where my heart almost fell to the ground. When I opened my AAPC account, I was relieved to see that the one I’ve been praying for has been answered. I passed,” she recounted.

“I know I am not alone; I claimed it from the start. With God, He surrounded me with the people who can help me in this journey,” she said, thanking her instructor for teaching the best way since day one, and her family members and friends who were by her side to show support.

“Failing doesn’t mean you’ll never get a chance.

Never discourage yourself because you failed once, make it as an inspiration to learn more and grow instead,” Kimberly said while citing Mathew 7:7 ‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.’

Presently, she looks after and takes care of less fortunate and abandoned children. She said she takes care of them not only as a nurse but also as a mother as if they were her family members. “At the end of the day, I know I touched their lives and I am contributing for their future. It’s never an easy task but God instilled me for these children,” she added.

Working as a nurse was the biggest challenge for her as she needs emotional support to give her best and highest level of care to the vulnerable children as well as take care of her two sons who are living in Dubai as well.

Life in the Philippines Rufo was raised by her farmer parents who did not have enough resources to sustain her studies.

However, as a determined individual, she reached her dream to graduate as a nurse by working as a housemaid and nanny for a family.

“I am thankful for my struggles which led me to this moment. I was just grateful to my family,” she said.

As she build her career, she worked as a contractual nurse in RuRal Health Unit in their municipality and shifted to a primary hospital.

After securing a job with the Latifah Hospital 11 years ago, Rufo has been actively involved in various charitable groups–joining Christmas-gift-giving causes, donating cash for church construction, sending goods and clothes through balikbayan boxes for natural disaster victims, among others.

Meanwhile, here in Dubai, Rufo is a member of the Community Development Authority (CDA), distributing iftar meals during Ramadan. During the onset of the pandemic, she was also engaged in promoting donation drives to help her displaced fellow Filipinos.

“The journey of chasing my dream is not easy but now it is so satisfying to be at the stage of life,” she said. I will continue to utilize the opportunity of humanitarian services back to the Philippines, focus on my children’s future, and support my family,” the Filipina said when asked about her plans.

Hailing from Lapu-Lapu in Cebu City and living in the UAE for eight years now, Alpas considered this as his greatest achievement so far since the competition was tough.

In 2019, when he was only placed third at the same latte art competition, he told himself that he will come back stronger. However, since Covid-19 happened, he did not plan on joining this year. Alpas’ friends from work had pushed him to compete and again and do what he loves the most.

Looking back on one of their greatest achievements as performers, I think it was the time when they were given a chance to perform at the Expo 2020 as the first-ever Young Stars,” she told The Global Filipino Magazine.

Watching them makes me feel nostalgic. I suddenly remembered those days when they are still being amateurish, learning ballet and gymnastics. I witnessed their struggles as they work hard just to improve their skills. And to see them shine on stage as they dance to their hearts’ content makes me feel proud and had a sense of fulfillment,” Magnaye said.

The ballet and gymnastic trainer thanked their parents who are equally supportive of the kids’ passion.

Visiting 192 Expo 2020 pavilions in 8 days

t has been almost three months since EXPO 2020 began to open the pavilions to the public.

Millions of tourists and residents have already visited the said event. But, seeing the Expo for some people might not be enough. People tend to challenge themselves to stay all hundreds of pavilions in the shortest time. Among thousands of challengers was Nikka Bonilla, a Filipina who avail a month-long pass and Expo passport. She visited over 192 pavilions in eight days.

“Nag punta po ako starting x 7,2021 ng gabi.

Together with my friends, we spent 2 whole days and 6 half days po para matapos lahat ng pavilions (192 countries). Yung ibang pavilions po walang available na stamps pa nung mga unang punta ko.

Nagsimula kami sa Opportunity pavilions, then after that sinunod namin ang mga bansa sa Sustainability at Mobility pavilions. Binisita rin po namin ang mga iba’t ibang organizations na nasa Expo,” said Bornilla.

“Isa sa mga nangunguna sa listahan ko ang Pilipinas! Dahil bilang isang Filipino, kailangan natin tangkilikin ang sariling atin, Napuntahan ko ang Bangkota at nalaman ano nga ba ito? isa sa mga nagustuhan ko sa Philippine Pavilion ay ang parang spiral ladder na nakakaakit sa mata, pati na yung shop na nagbebenta ng mga produkto na mula pa sa ating bansa,” she added.

Her experience at Expo 2020 Dubai has opened her eyes to the diversity of cultures that the world offers.

ith immense pride, a sophisticated educators’ convention in Bahrain truly realized the profound goal of bringing all Filipino educators in Bahrain together to catalyze their ultimate mission of promoting and maintaining unity, and a pervasive culture of association by honoring the exceptional educators who have had the greatest impact on this country.

On November 5, 2021, in celebration of World Teachers’ Month, the Philippine Teachers Association- Bahrain (PTA-B) held its 3rd Educators Convention cum “A Night of Recognition of Excellence” at Wyndham Grand Manama, with the theme “Creating Connections, Building Bridges to Strengthen Educators in Recovering and Revitalizing Education.’’ The dynamic keynote speaker, Dr. Grace M. Corpuz, a Filipino professor at Bahrain Teachers College, University of Bahrain, enabled the hundreds of participants to acquire a compendium of knowledge and abilities to recover and revitalize education covering the wide spectrum of global challenges.

he Society of Human Resource Professionals and Associates (SHRPA( has recently staged one of the most prestigious searches for exemplary HR professionals in UAE at its 4th Exemplary Filipino HR Professionals Award (EFHRPA) ceremonies in conjunction with its 5th year anniversary held at Al Otaiba Building, Abu Dhabi with the theme “Moving Forward. Human Capital Amidst the Pandemic”.

This year’s recognition focused on HR Professionals who are working in medical or health services. For Elby Trinidad-Mangoma, a UAE-based Filipina, being resilient during the pandemic is one of the critical skills that one should possess.

An environmentalist, sanitary and civil engineer by profession, she arrived in the UAE seven years ago using a tourist visa. Just like many Filipinos who ventured abroad, she wanted to prosper personally and professionally.

UAE may be touted as a land of opportunity, Mangoma had a hard time finding a job that aligns with her profession.

“I decided to be flexible,” she said.

She was then offered a secretarial job in a real estate firm. The job description, she said, was ‘totally different’ from her profession as she performs several duties including accounting, document controlling, doing administrative work and as a personal assistant to the CEO.

“I was in a work environment unrelated to my previous work experiences, so I had to find ways to learn the necessary skills to perform the job well,” she said.

The Filipina said that she is grateful that she found free online courses being offered by the Filipina Institute, a leading training institute in the UAE that also offers face-to-face and virtual classes in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Bahrain.

She took the free online course Accounting Skills for the New Supervisors which took her days to finish it along with the other courses she selfstudied to help her in her work.

“Despite the busy schedule, I never quit because I believe in the saying that ‘Quitter never win, and winners never quit’,” she said.

“Having the certificate of completion made me feel confident about the new skills that I have learned to contribute to my current company and for future use,” she added.

Currently, she is taking three more courses simultaneously from the same institute as she believes these will be her tools to thrive and survive in a highly competitive world.

Dimaano also explained the crucial role that HR staff are now having especially during the time of pandemic. The awarding of certificates, flowers and other gifts were also graced by Asst. Labor Attache Jesus Vicente Magsaysay II, Dr. Renante Abellanosa, Bayanihan Council Chairman, and Dr. Allen Samonte from Bath Spa University.
