Amid the dynamic backdrop of Dubai’s technological landscape, Geraldine Faye Sta. Ana, affectionately known as Faye, emerges as a remarkable figure. A second-generation Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), she embodies the spirit of determination and creativity that many Filipinos bring to global stages. At the young age of 30, Faye has distinguished herself in the tech sector as the Head of The Philippines for Taptap Send. This innovative company is changing the game in how remittances are delivered worldwide, offering zero-fee transactions to Asia and Africa from various global points.

Faye’s ascent in the tech world is not merely a tale of personal achievement. It is a story woven from her challenges, her boldness to seize diverse opportunities, and her unwavering commitment to serve her community. Her journey reflects a deep-rooted desire to make meaningful contributions and to ensure that the fruits of her labor positively impact those around her and beyond.

Faye’s roots are deeply entwined with the OFW narrative, having been raised by a single mother working in Dubai for over two decades. This upbringing instilled in her the importance of hard work, perseverance, and the desire to give back.

“I was raised by a single mother who has been working in Dubai, UAE, for the past 22 years,” Faye shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, highlighting the sacrifices her family made for their future.

Her career abroad started with Careem, the Middle East’s “Everything app,” and through her relentless spirit, she navigated her way through layoffs and sector changes, ultimately making a significant impact at Careem before moving on to Taptap Send.

At Taptap Send, Faye has been instrumental in launching and growing the Philippine corridor, making remittance sending a hassle-free experience for hundreds of thousands of Filipinos globally. Her role is not just administrative; it’s personal.

Faye emphasizes, “I am very passionate in advocating for Taptap Send globally as I am the target market. My mom is the target market that this app seeks to help.”

Faye’s career trajectory is peppered with accolades and recognitions, including being named among the Top 100 Most Influential Filipinas on LinkedIn in 2021 and 2023. She attributes her success to her visibility and proactive engagement with the community, quoting Jen

Gottlieb: “Visibility is your responsibility because if you have a service, a story, or a product that helps people and you are not making yourself visible to those people every single day, those people are gonna go listen to someone else... simply because you are too shy or hesitant about being seen.”

The decision to work abroad was not taken lightly. Faye aimed to alleviate her mother’s financial burdens and pursue her dreams that seemed out of reach in the Philippines.

“Staying and working in The Philippines was never an option as the salary is low, and I won’t be able to sustain our growing living expenses if I will become the breadwinner,” she explains, highlighting the economic motivations behind her move.

Her journey has not been without struggles. From the emotional toll of being separated from her family to the financial challenges faced by her mother as an OFW,

Faye has seen firsthand the sacrifices made by Filipino workers abroad. Yet, it’s these challenges that have fueled her mission to make a difference, leading to her innovative ventures like kesh.ae, an online cycling marketplace, and plans to create a one-stop-shop for creatives and content creators in the Filipino market.

Faye’s advice to her fellow kababayans struggling abroad is profound and heartfelt: “Take your time & trust the process. You are where you need to be right now... Remember all the burdens you experience now are blessings in disguise.”

Her mantra, “When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence,” encapsulates her approach to life and work.

Through her achievements and initiatives, Faye is building longer tables, fostering community, and inspiring the next generation of global Filipino leaders.

Nicolai’s story is one of ambition, fueled by a desire for a better future.

“I grew up in a very financially challenged family,” he recalls with The Global Filipino Magazine, highlighting the stark realities that pushed him toward seeking opportunities overseas.

With a background in Banking and Finance, thanks to a scholarship from the Rotary Club, Nicolai quickly realized his true calling lay in the realm of design. This realization led him on a path that diverged from conventional expectations, toward a career that resonated with his creative soul.

His journey abroad began at the age of 25 when he moved to the UAE, initially working as a graphic designer before quickly ascending through the ranks of the creative industry. Nicolai’s career saw him contributing to high-profile projects for global brands such as Adidas, Netflix, Google, and TikTok, among others.

Reflecting on these achievements, Nicolai shares, “The first proud moment I ever had was when I saw the billboard that I did along Sheikh Zayed road for adidas.”

However, the pinnacle of Nicolai’s career has been the establishment of Ichiryu Ramen House with his brothers. In this venture, Nicolai has been able to marry his passion for design with his entrepreneurial spirit, creating a space that not only serves delicious food but also showcases his personal collection of Japanese art and memorabilia.

These experiences have instilled in him a profound appreciation for hard work and the value of money, principles that have guided him through his entrepreneurial journey.

Looking ahead, Nicolai dreams of expanding his business endeavors and giving back to the community. Inspired by his own experiences with scholarship, he aspires to create opportunities for education and development for underprivileged children.

For fellow Filipinos navigating the complexities of life abroad, Nicolai offers words of wisdom and encouragement: “Life is the most challenging but the most beautiful thing we have. There is no shortcut in life. Get out of your comfort zones. Stay humble and love other people.”

His advice reflects a life lived in pursuit of growth, love, and happiness, emphasizing the importance of resilience, humility, and the pursuit of one’s passions.

Through his work, Nicolai continues to inspire not only the Filipino community in the UAE but also aspiring entrepreneurs and creatives worldwide, proving that with passion and hard work, any dream is within reach.

Angela Bauza

Within New York’s dynamic heartbeat, Angela Bauza, at the age of 27, has crafted a remarkable narrative of success and determination. Her journey, which began in the Philippines and led her to the city that never sleeps, showcases her three years of international experience and embodies the essence of pursuing and realizing one’s dreams.

Angela embarked on her overseas career by enrolling in New York University’s Integrated Marketing Program, specializing in Digital Marketing, a field that resonates deeply with her passion for creating meaningful work. “I’ve always been passionate about creating meaningful work, whether it’s through the campaigns I worked on for my clients in my previous jobs or through the projects I’ve done in school,” Bauza shares. Her dedication culminated in a masteral capstone thesis that aimed to make beauty packaging accessible and inclusive through tactile symbols, a project nominated for NYU’s School of Professional Studies Capstone Competition, highlighting its innovative approach and impact.

The decision to pursue graduate studies abroad was fueled by Angela’s desire to break free from the career standstill she felt and reignite her passion for her industry. “For the longest time, I’ve perceived graduate school as prestigious and only the smartest people could get accepted,” she recalls, reflecting on her academic journey. Despite not being a straight-A student in her early years, Angela’s determination and dreams of living in New York propelled her to take a leap of faith, leading to her role at Love,

Bonito as part of the pioneering team to strategize the brand’s market entry in the U.S.

Before her current role, Angela’s career in the Philippines was marked by her tenure at Ogilvy, where she rose from a Media Monitoring Assistant to an Account Manager. Her work on the Skinmergency campaign for Aveeno’s Dermexa line, aimed at aiding those with Eczemaprone skin, stands out as a testament to her commitment to creating campaigns with purpose. “This was meaningful for me because I felt like there was a sense of purpose more than just promoting the product,” she notes, underscoring the value of impactful work.

At Love, Bonito, Angela finds joy in working alongside a team of passionate women, sharing the brand’s commitment to empowering Asian women. “The best part of my job is being able to work with like-minded people and serving the community of Asian women like me,” she says, highlighting the alignment of her personal values with the company’s mission.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Angela dedicates her time to volunteering with non-profit organizations, including Heart of Dinner, which combats food insecurity among Asian American seniors. This volunteer work, she believes, may seem small but has a profound impact on others, fulfilling her desire to contribute meaningfully to her community.

Reflecting on her experiences, Angela acknowledges the challenges of building a career abroad, particularly the struggle with self-doubt and the necessity of

resilience. “As an international candidate, you have to work 10x harder than a person who was born here just because of visa sponsorship limitations,” she explains, emphasizing the importance of perseverance.

Looking ahead, Angela plans to continue building her career, with aspirations to support her family and inspire young Asian women to dream big. “I hope to inspire and motivate young Asian women that they deserve to dream big as much as they want to and they can do it as long as you make the most out of every opportunity,” she expresses, aiming to be a source of support and encouragement for others facing similar journeys.

For fellow Filipinos abroad, Angela’s advice is to find a community and establish a support system, underscoring the importance of staying true to one’s roots and remembering where one came from. “The friends that I have found here -- they are what keep me going, apart from the family and friends that I have back in the Philippines,” she concludes, offering a message of hope and solidarity for those navigating the complexities of life overseas.

32 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 10 | FEBRUARY 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

The journey of Mylene De Los Ama in Dubai—a city renowned for its ambitious spirit and cultural diversity—echoes a profound narrative of resilience, growth, and thankfulness. At 43, her path from the Philippines to the UAE has been one marked by boldness and a continuous quest for personal development. As an HR DSA/Business Development Executive at Derby Group of Companies, Mylene’s account extends well beyond her professional success, illustrating a significant evolution of her personal identity and strength.

Mylene embarked on her overseas adventure in June 2006, beginning her career in customer service with Al Attar Properties. Her career trajectory took a significant turn in 2011 when she joined Derby Group, marking the start of a 12year tenure that saw her roles evolve through the years, particularly during the challenging times of the recession and the recent pandemic.

“Throughout my journey, the highlight of my career has been continuous selfgrowth and adaptation,” Mylene reflects, showcasing her resilient spirit.

The decision to work abroad was fueled by a desire to support her family, a sentiment shared by many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Mylene’s professional path, however, began long before her move to Dubai. From being a Student Assistant at CEU in Manila to excelling in customer service at Globe Telecom Philippines, her early experiences laid the groundwork for her relentless work ethic and dedication.

Mylene’s current role with Derby Group transcends the conventional bounds of her job description. She describes Derby Group as her “second home,” expressing immense gratitude for the mentorship received from Ashok Kalyanpur, the Founder and Group CEO, along with Francis, and Saneep. “Life is not easy. Struggle is real,” she admits, yet her unyielding spirit and deep-rooted faith have been her guiding lights through the trials.

Looking towards the future, Mylene remains grounded in the present, trusting in the divine plans laid out for her. Her advice to fellow kabayans (countrymen) echoes the lessons she’s learned: “Have Faith, always be grateful from small to biggest thing.” She emphasizes living in reality, pursuing happiness, and letting go of what no longer serves one’s growth.
