Meet Darcie

GIRLS WHO SPIN

Darcie and I went to high school together in Amsterdam. I graduated, she moved away, and we lost touch for a while. During COVID, we both ended up in London and reconnected. Then I moved again, and our relationship entered back into the phase of catching up through virtual hearts supporting each other’s creative endeavours from across the world.
London’s magnetic pull couldn’t keep me away for long, and I returned after graduating university. Once again, we reunited; these cycles of friendship all too common to us having grown up as internationals.
I watched Darcie take up DJing and instantly crush it. Her bold and distinctive aesthetic and sonic signature inspired me as I also started to learn how to spin. She helped me book my first gig at The Globe in Notting Hill. I love watching her grow as a DJ. In my winter hibernation, seeing that Darcie is playing a set is one of the only things that can get me out of the house.

How would you describe your signature sound as a DJ?
When people ask me this I always say hot girl music. I want the girls dancing first— when the girls are dancing, everyone is dancing.

What are your top 5 favourite songs right now?
take your vibes and go - Kito
5 Minutinhos de Alegria - Funk Raiz RJ
HIGH2GETBY - Mercury
Bucket Listener - Headache
Jelsy - bar italia

What are your 5 favourite spots to party in London?
The Globe (Talbot Road). I’ve been going there since I moved to London 4 years ago and mix there from time to time. A true London classic!! They’re family <3
The Cause. It’s a fucking TREK to get to but have had some amazing nights there. Different rooms for different vibes and always the best DJs.
Not necessarily a favourite but everyone should go to The Box at least once… especially during summer. There’s no way to describe it.
Space Talk has one of the best atmospheres and is genuinely so beautiful, plus they do amazing cocktails and sushi!
I want to say Scotch but it died a long time ago… it’s time to bring it back.
How about 5 things to do in West?
Will say The Globe again because it’s a club at night but a sandwich shop during the day! Multi dimensional and literally always good.
For brunch… Adrianna’s Cafe or Beam. Adrianna’s is a true local spot and they’re so sweet in there, and Beam is a little more commercial (and a little pricier) but their menu is incredible. Just go early so you can get a table.
There’s a little Japanese supermarket near Ladbroke Grove that I want to gatekeep because I love their onigiri… but they deserve their flowers. Ikkyu is my spot <3
Klear Labs on Golborne Road is another classic for me. It’s completely sugar & gluten free and their sweet treats are amazing without all the shit added to it. And their matcha is good so it’s a win win.
Karve in Kensington for workouts … if you’ve been you know...

What is a London thing you have beef with?

I don’t wanna say it but... the men. And also the people who snatch your phone in the street. I just wanna chill without having crazy grip just to keep something that is mine.
How do you prepare for a set?
I spend hours on Soundcloud looking for fun remixes of songs that I love in styles that I like (baile, trance, afro) and create a playlist. Then you have to really get to know the songs, download them into Rekordbox and set cue points for each track to make transitions a little smoother... it’s a process for sure and you just really have to know your music.
What are 5 things you absolutely need to have in your purse on a night out?
Cigarettes or a vape, lip products (NYX cinnamon! And Laneige in the lilac shade), gum, hand sanitiser, and mini perfume samples. I love going to shops and asking for a few samples to keep in my bag.

What do you play to get people dancing?
Definitely crowd dependent, but City Girls or Sexyy Red.
I wear different perfumes every day and mix and match them, but some base ones I always wear are Le Labo Thé Matcha 23 and Juliette Has A Gun Not a Perfume (Superdose). Big fan of DedCool Taunt right now too.

My most prized possession is my 2006 Chanel bowling bag. It was a birthday present last year from a friend and I wear it every day — fits everything and has the old Chanel quality which is miles better than the new stuff.

What city are you headed to next?
I’m going to Cartagena, Spain next week to see my parents and my dog. I’m going with my best friend, Nour.

Who should be the Queen of England?
My mum. She’s awesome and gorgeous and an icon.
Why are girl DJs the best?
They just get it. They know what girls want to hear and are just generally better at curating a vibe (sorry).
Love to male DJs though!
Who are your favourite girl DJs?
I have so many! London locals; I love Girl (@girl171110), Laelo Black, Lilo too. Girls that get it.
