For four weeks, The GIANT Room and Joan Ganz Cooney Center from Sesame Workshop joined students and teachers at their school to learn about AI literacy, creative writing, and science. As part of the school’s Material Science unit, we focused on ingredients, where they come from, their special properties, and their cause and effect. Students formed groups and together dreamed of an imaginary location where they would brew a special potion with their ingredients. They then wrote recipes for their potions addressing a given design challenge and put together evidence statements for their potion’s cause and effect. Results of their work have been published in this book, along with a set of collectible ingredient trading cards.
During the program, students used a variety of prototyping and generative AI tools, practiced writing, and engaged in block-based prompt engineering. As a result, they developed awareness about AI, learned how to use AI in service of their ideas, how to spot AI’s mistakes, and how to critically evaluate AI outputs. They also showed improvement in their writing and expressive language skills.

HOW THIS BOOK IS MADE
Co-designed and co-written by 26 students and a multidisciplinary team of artists, educators, and writers at The GIANT Room, A GIANT Recipe Book: The Adventures of 26 Prompt Engineers and Material Scientists showcases students’ science, creative writing, and AI literacy achievements and invites their friends and family to celebrate, reflect, and learn abouttheircreations!
Students created the ingredient avatars you see throughout the book by sketching and writing about an ingredient of their choice – real or imaginary – while reflecting on its properties, source, and cause and effect. Using The GIANT Remix app, we then generated prototypes of their ingredient avatars and went through multiple rounds of feedback to finalize their ingredient cards. You’ll find the exact AI prompts we used in the section, “Meet the Ingredients.” The teachers also joined inandcreatedtheirownAIavatar.
Next, students used block-based prompt engineering to generate what they envisioned the setting of their potion making location to look like. In groups, they added nouns, adjectives, qualifiers, quantifiers, connectors and more to build a text prompt, providing instructions for an AI tool on exactly what they wanted it to generate. These images were used as the background settings for students’ recipes. Finally, students were given a Design Challenge card to write a recipe of a potionusingtheiringredients.
Why AI? The GIANT Room’s mission is to elevate kids’ voices and provide them with opportunities to publish and share with friends and family. AI is a powerful tool they can use in their creative journey, and along the way they can gain AI and media literacy skills that are incredibly valuable for their future. The GIANT Room introduces students to these tools in a responsibleandsafeway,alwayswithahumanintheloop.

Durante cuatro semanas, The GIANT Room y Joan Ganz Cooney Center de Sesame Workshop visitó una escuela para aprender junto con sus alumnos y maestros sobre la alfabetización de Inteligencia Artificial, la Escritura Creativa y la Ciencia. SQUISHY PUFF POTION
CAUSE & EFFECT:
After pouring Squishy Puff Potion on an object it makes everything soft and squishy.
INGREDIENTS:
3 spoons of House, Salt, Flour, Egg, and Ice Cream
1 cup of Rainbow Gelatin
2 cups of Baking Soda Horse
1 cup of Rainbow Gelatin
100 spoons of Corn, Salt, Egg, Oil, and Dog
3 liters of Beab Eggs
3 gallons of shaving cream
ESTIMATED TIME: 2 years and 2 hours
LOCATION:
A cave under water
DIRECTIONS:
Go inside the castle.
1. Stir and smoosh the House, Salt, Flour, Egg, and Ice Cream. Stir in the rainbow in the house to make it more puffy and squishy. Then, shake the house.
2. Mix in Rainbow Gelatin.
3. Mix in Horse hair.
4. Mix in Rainbow Gelatin.
5. Mix all the food and bake it. Then, smoosh the food.
6. Mix in Beab.
7. Heat shaving cream and add to the mixture.
8. Keep the mixture in the castle for 2 hours.
9. Take the mixture inside the cave.

10. Keep it there for 2 years to turn it into a potion.
