Something super weird (and oh, so wonderful) is happening in this activity book! Our landmarks are getting mixed and remixed into a set of postcards that you can play all sorts of games with!
We are extremely honored to partner with the Connecticut State Library and bring GIANT creative STEM experiences to the Connecticut community at the Ives Main Branch of the New Haven Free Public Library. We implemented a Remix Station with librarian Matt Ulman.
Participants joined, dreamed, created, and shared. Here, we have “remixed” their landmark creations into a one-of-a-kind postcard set inviting all kids (and adults) to collect the postcards, mail them to their loved ones, celebrate their communities, search for hidden items, go on a treasure hunt, and even make community maps of their own!
I want to thank the librarians and staff from the Ives Main Branch of the New Haven Free Public Library for their partnership. Funding for this program was made possible by the Connecticut State Library and Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), provided through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
Let’s play!

This is my favorite landmark because of Abby the Nurse. They have amazing and professional doctors and lovely nurses.

There is a giant tree where my cat, Braids, likes to play hide and seek!
You have to walk very, very quietly on your tiptoes so you don't scare the little birds away!

This is my favorite landmark because I love eating delicious pizza with my family.
Here’s a helpful tip: ask for a lollipop!

It has the best playground ever. It’s great for hide and seek and making mud castles.
You have to run super, super fast if you want to get a seat on the swings because everyone wants them!

This is my favorite landmark because I can only draw lines.
If you go to your favorite place in our town and close your eyes, you can see these glowing lines and shapes swirling all around!

This is my favorite landmark because my parents are in the circle.
This place brings me happiness.

#1 Guess the landmark

#2 Guess the landmark
When you feel sick or have a little fall, kind helpers here will care for all. Bandages, smiles, and heartbeats too. What place am I? Can you guess who?

Follow the smell of bubbling cheese and warm dough. The place you seek sounds like it might have... lollipops?

WRITE YOUR ANWSER HERE
I stand up tall and touch the sky, while little wings go fluttering by. Deep by my roots, if you look just right, a furry friend may hide from sight. What place am I?

You followed every clue, solved every challenge, and made it all the way to Ives Main Library. The treasure was under the library this entire time!

Where would YOU bury the treasure?
MAKE YOUR OWN
1.Scan the QR code to print and download blank maps with the landmarks featured in this book.
2.Around the landmarks draw roads, transportation, parks, people, homes, buildings, and treasure hunt clues!
3.Take it further and cut out the landmarks to create a map from scratch. You can even add hidden items and characters to create a Search & Find game of your own.

What are the landmarks in YOUR community?

1.Grab some paper and something to draw with.
2.Draw a map of your town or city. Where are the important places?
3.Take it further and build 3D structures on your map: buildings, cars, bridges, people, mountains or something else!

How does YOUR home make you feel?
1.Scan the QR code to watch a creative mission video about what a mental map is and how to create one.
2.Draw a mental map of all the places you visit in your town: your home, school, stores, restaurants, parks, or...
3.Take it further by adding emotions and memories of those places to your map.

The GIANT Room is a creative co-design lab that provides opportunities for children, families, and educators to collaborate with designers, policymakers, scientists, artists, and engineers.
In addition, on our GIANT Remix platform, we provide opportunities for children to co-design and co-publish books and games they can read and play with their friends and family.
