The Gettysburgian began in 1897 as a publication called The Weekly Gettysburgian. At the time of its inaugural issue, the team published local news in a tabloid print newspaper on a weekly basis. Since 2012, The Gettysburgian has been publishing around-the-clock online content on its website. The Gettysburgian continued to print weekly, tabloid-style newspapers until the summer of 2019, when the editorial team decided to transition the paper to a magazine print format that would be published monthly.
125 years in the making, hundreds of editors, writers and photographers later, The Gettysburgian is one of the oldest student-run organizations at Gettysburg College. The Gettysburgian’s print archives hold over a century’s worth of newspapers—and now magazines— that tell the story of the College from various angles: sports, opinions, news, features, arts & entertainment and more. To this day, The Gettysburgian’s web content is updated daily and promoted across social media platforms, in addition to the weekly release of a news podcast, The GettysPod, formerly known as On Target!
At The Gettysburgian’s quasquicentennial (125th) anniversary, the team reaffirms their commitment to achieving the publication’s motto: “documenting tomorrow’s history today.” In this anniversary spread, track the 125-year growth of The Gettysburgian through archive photos and headlines.

The Gettysburgian published its first issue on March 16th, 1897. One reader wrote to The Gettysburgian, “ its appearance marks an epoch in the history of the college.” A subscription for a year was only $1.00
