Dear Gateway Community: e h t m o r f e g a s s e M l o o h c S f o d a e H Laurie Gruhn I have seen Gateway through three lenses. As an educator who has worked in this city for over 35 years, I have had the privilege of working with students who have come from Gateway; I have also confidently sent bright, struggling students to Gateway, knowing they learned differently, and that Gateway would appreciate and value their strengths while giving them the tools they needed.

I have experienced Gateway as a parent and now, the proud parent of an alum. I remember the person my daughter was when she entered Gateway - a frightened, defeated fifth grader - and the spunky, assured student who left several years later, ready to start high school.

Finally, I have seen Gateway through the lens as the Head of School. I can speak firsthand of the pride, the passion, and the commitment of our educators and administrators, as they settle for nothing less than the best for and from every student.

As I look through these lenses, I see Gateway’s full story. I see our vision and our mission at work.

Our community faced a unique and challenging experience during the 2020-2021 academic year.

During this period, I was impressed by the perseverance, hope, and determination of our community of educators, families, friends, and supporters. Together we navigated a new world that, though frequently exacting, also brought innovation, creativity, and resourcefulness. Our firm goal remained empowering bright students with language-based learning disabilities to be confident self-advocates, cognizant of their strengths, and on the road to becoming independent learners.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the entire Gateway community for your crucial support this year. Thank you for rising to the challenge and for your flexibility as we adapted and rededicated ourselves to our mission amid challenging times.

THE GATEWAY SCHOOL

MISSION The Gateway School is a K-8, independent day school that transforms the lives of bright students with language-based learning disabilities and attention deficits. At Gateway, our students become skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. Relying on direct, multisensory instruction and guided by an integrated curriculum, expert faculty teach students the language, literacy, and critical thinking skills that are the foundations for success in mainstream educational settings and beyond. Gateway believes a close relationship between the school and parents provides essential support as students grow and seek to realize their potential. In small classes and as members of a diverse and inclusive community, Gateway students experience academic and social success, recognize their strengths, and are empowered to become independent learners.

Greetings from the r i a h C d r a o B Jodi Schwartz On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to present The Gateway School’s Annual Report of Giving for 2020-2021.

A key role of the Board of Trustees is to ensure the continuance of Gateway’s mission and provide vision and financial oversight. As our community has continued to deal with the global health crisis, Gateway's Head of School,

Laurie Gruhn, and our Senior Administrators, in collaboration with faculty and staff, ensured that the school supported its students and its families and maintained Gateway’s exceptional standard of learning, both remotely and in the schoolhouse.

As a parent of a Gateway alum, Lucas Richman ’18, who attended the school from kindergarten through 8th grade, I know very well how essential a partnership with our Gateway families is to the success of the program. Your participation and generous support of fundraising efforts provided much-needed financial assistance to our community. Your contribution of time, talent, and treasure were impactful investments that will benefit Gateway students throughout their lives. I also wish to extend my enormous gratitude to the Parents Association, led by our officers – PA Co-Presidents Jeanne Madej and Jennifer Serrano and PA Treasurer Katherine Grier – along with our classroom representatives, for your role liaising between the school and home, and your efforts reimagining traditional school events.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the strength and dedication of Gateway’s faculty, staff, and administration. Your innovation this year was paramount to the continuance of Gateway’s exemplary program. The energy, enthusiasm, and support you provided Gateway’s students and their families marks you as dedicated and compassionate professionals.

2021 SPEAKER SERIES This year, as we began to reimagine our Spring Gala, we looked to our mission to offer direction. This reflection led to the creation of a week-long Virtual Speaker Series, Conversations x Connections: Celebrating the Diversity of Minds, Intelligence, and Abilities. This series turned our attention back to our community, highlighted our internal talent, and modeled for our students components of our mission. The importance of critical thinking skills, self-advocacy, collaboration, mentorship, and forging close relationships in a diverse and inclusive community were themes that were woven into all our talks.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our supporters and to our speakers for contributing their time and incredible talent. Immense thanks to trustee and current parent Leslie de Oliveira for her wisdom and guidance through the planning process.
