AWARD WINNING Program
Our award-winning Garrett Internship Program finished out its 4th official summer session this year. We like to think our program is a step above the “getting coffee, filing things, and shadowing” internships we all remember. As the leader of this initiative at The Garrett Companies, I set out to create a program that was competitive, prestigious, and a great opportunity for students to grow holistically. Taking the best program components from existing top-level experiences (our peer group as well as S&P 500 companies) and merging those with a coaching and development approach, our program hits the ground running and sets our students on path for both career and life success.
At The Garrett Companies, everyone is a valuable member of the team, and we immerse interns into our culture and mindset. We believe it is important for interns to see the “why” behind their projects and how their actions push our mission as a company forward. Our program offers a wide range of openings annually that target top students and motivated individuals in the fields of Development, Investment, Construction, Accounting, Marketing, Hospitality, Legal Studies, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, and Logistics.

LEAD WHERE YOU ARE:
Each summer we focus on a core value that becomes the theme of the session. This summer, “Lead Where You Are” was taught through our coaching and leadership sessions, speaker series, service project, as well as daily work. We reminded our interns that they have the potential for leadership and influence, regardless of where their position ranks on an organizational chart.
• 12 active construction projects across the country were managed and progressed during the program.
• Interns were paired with department mentors and leaders to give them both daily guidance as well as career guidance.
• Every division of our company hosted an intern including Construction, Development, Investments, Interior Design, Human Resources, Marketing, Legal, Accounting, Landscape Architecture, and Property Management. We use GIP as another cross-pollination strategy to bring our departments together over the summer.
• Interns were given professional development courses each week, focusing on professionalism, communication, presentation, and mindfulness.
• This year we introduced our Leadership Series. This was a professional development course led by author and speaker Travis Daugherty (Champions 101).
• We hosted our biggest summer speaker series ever! This summer featured 3 professionals from outside of our industry
to share their stories of being adaptive and observant: Chad Hammes, Creative Producer at Netflix; Pete Cangany, Former Partner at Ernst and Young; and Thom Geshay, President of Davidson Hospitality Group.
• Interns and High School Interns were paired to create mentor / mentee relationships creating professional bonds that will continue beyond our program.
• Interns worked as a single team to successfully execute a facilities construction project for the City of Greenwood, Indiana. The team was responsible for budget, approvals, designs, as well as physical execution and communications.
• Every intern prepared a presentation of their summer achievements to be presented in person to their departments (all staff invited).
