Gulfport Neighbor Feud Comes to Council Meeting

For the record, I categorically deny ever initiating any aggression against Mr. Donelini. There is a whole lot more to this story, and if you are willing to take the time to speak with me, I would be happy to fill you in. Truthfully, I think you buried the lede here. Here’s a question for your intrepid reporter: Did the City of Gulfport actually utilize municipal resources and manpower to hide the fact that a notorious code violator has consistently failed to comply with the basic requirements around his property? That seems like a more substantial story in my humble opinion. –Jonathan Robert, Gulfport

I’m interested to know if it is the policy of this paper to go to press with an article before reaching out to the principal subjects of the piece and providing them with an opportunity to comment or rebut the story? That seems like the baseline for ethical journalism. Additionally, you should know that under our Constitution, individuals are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Your article presents Mr. Donelini’s allegations as statements of fact, instead of contested cicurmanstaces the particulars of what occurred being a matter currently disputed before the courts. The keyword here is “allegedly.” and it does not appear once in this piece.

If a potential juror were to read this article it would be considered a biased poison pill. I am curious if you just repeated verbatim the police’s version of the events, because that’s not journalism, it’s stenography.

news Most Pinellas Election Results Same as Florida GOP Sweep for Statewide Races Vote results in Pinellas County mirrored the state as a whole in many races in the 2022 general election.

While the margin of victory may have been slightly different in some races, the winner in Pinellas was the same as the overall winner in every congressional, statewide, and legislative race.

That means Marco Rubio won another term in the U.S. Senate by defeating Val Demings; Anna Paulina Luna prevailed over Eric Lynn in the 13th Congressional District for the U.S. House of Representatives; and Kathy Castor beat James Judge in the 14th Congressional District.

Castor is the only Democrat out of those three winners.

Republicans swept the gubernatorial and cabinet races in the county and across the state. Ron DeSantis won by 11 points over Charlie Crist in Pinellas, a handy margin in itself but less than the governor’s 20-point lead in his quest for a second term.

Ashley Moody remains Florida’s attorney general with her win over Aramis Ayala, also by double-digit margins locally and statewide.

Jimmy Patronis won another term as chief financial officer over Adam Hattersley, and Wilson Simpson was re-elected as agriculture commissioner in a race against Naomi Blemur.

Bruce Bartlett defeated Allison Miller in the race for state attorney for the 6th Judicial Circuit. Results in races for State Senate included Darryl Rouson over Christina Paylan in District 16, Nick DiCeglie over Eunic Ortiz in District 18, and Ed Hooper over Amaro Lionheart in District 21.

Pat Gerard’s goal of a third term on the Board of County Commissioners was not realized, as she lost to Brian Scott by a margin of 54 to 46 percent in another instance of a Republican defeating a Democrat.

The two new faces on the Pinellas County School Board will be Dawn Peters and Stephanie Meyer. Peters defeated Keesha Benson while Meyer held off a challenge from Brian Martin.

Grosshans, Jorge Labarga, and Ricky Polston. The same goes for all judges on the ballot: Patricia Kelly, Nelly Khouzam, Suzanne Labrit, Matt Lucas, Robert Morris, Stevan Northcutt, John Stargel, and Craig Villanti.

Della Cope defeated Megan Roach by 18 points in the race for County Judge Group 1.

Both charter amendments in Madeira Beach passed by landslides, and in St. Petersburg the yes votes won the day with regard to both charter amendments and both referendum questions. Both charter amendments in Treasure Island passed, as did the Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue District referendum question.

Utility Improvements Moving Full Speed Ahead

Pole and Transformer Replacement, Underground Work Ongoing

Crews from Duke Energy are popping up in different places around Gulfport every day as planned improvements continue.

Motorists and pedestrians in and around Gulfport have no doubt noticed in recent weeks random streets blocked and utility trucks with work crews on the ground as well as in buckets up in the air.

That is because Duke Energy’s plan to move forward with various improvements to the power infrastructure throughout the city is well underway, specifically the overhead and underground power lines.

“Duke Energy is working hard in the Gulfport community to improve reliability, reduce outages, strengthen the power grid against severe weather and prepare our system to serve the growth in this community,” utility spokesperson Ana Gibbs told The Gabber last week. “As part of this commitment, we are conducting major grid improvement projects.”

The overall plan was unveiled to the Gulfport City Council in mid-May.

Gibbs outlined in a Nov. 8 email what is happening right now.

Improvements to the overhead power lines are being done along 13th Avenue South, 15th Avenue South, and 49th Street South. Residents in some of those areas can see evidence that new poles have been installed.

Crews are scheduled to start working to install undergrounding lines in the next two months, Gibbs said.

Most of those workers will be seen in action on 8th, 9th, and 10th Avenues South, as well as in sections between 49th and 58th Streets South. The other part of that work will take place along Beach Boulevard South.

Duke Energy mailed brochures to residents last week so they can follow along with each phase of the project.

Residents should also receive automated calls about two weeks in advance to let them know that crews will be working in their area.

Pole and transformer replacement is happening between 58th and 64th Streets South and along Royal Palm Drive. This kind of work is much less invasive, Gibbs said, so the utility communicates with affected parties when it requires crews to access private property.

“This project will continue into 2023,” she stated.

When reviewing the plans with the City Council in the spring, Duke Energy representatives said that not all city residents would be affected, with the priority placed on those identified as outage-prone.

Officials said relocating utilities underground would make them more resistant to storm-related outages as well as cyber attacks.

The process has involved obtaining easements in front of homes, which is more accessible and less intrusive than much of the current infrastructure that is in the back of residential lots. There are no plans to trench any yards.

“We take pride in leaving the community the way we found it,” a Duke Energy rep told council.

Occasionally the relocation work requires that a resident’s meter be moved, and the utility reimburses that cost. The underground work is expected to take about four months.

Customers will have no out-ofpocket costs stemming from the overall project, and Duke Energy will not seek any sort of rate adjustment for several years, according to its representatives.

When glass bottles are added to a load, they can shatter in the bin or when compacted in the the truck and contaminate other material.

They also pose a hazard to town employees. Glass bottles — as well as cardboard and mixed paper — can be recycled in dumpsters behind the Gulfport Neighborhood Center at 1617 49th St. S. Bottles and cans should be rinsed; cardboard and paper should be clean.

plastic containers, and green bins for newspapers, junk mail, magazines, and cardboard that fits into the bins. Accordingly, people seem to give more thought to recycling as they sort materials, and workers can more easily remove contaminants. Gulfport has a new-ish split-body truck, with one side ded-

icated to each color bin. This truck compacts loads, while the old one (it’s for sale, if you’re interested!) didn’t. On days when recycling is picked up, the day’s load averages 1.25 tons. Every few days, the truck goes to the processing plant in St. Petersburg.

Does Gulfport profit from recycling? Do all the loads really get recycled?

It hasn’t made a profit for the last several years. In fact, it pays $115 per ton for processing — double what it was five years ago. But if you’ve seen recycling going into the back of a dump truck, it’s because the lone split-body truck is out of commission. The load still gets recycled, and for Gulfport at least, that’s cheaper than landfilling or incineration.

How should people recycle lithium batteries?

Take them to the sanitation department’s office on 49th St. These batteries can cause fires that are hard to put out. Recently, one caused a fire in a Gulfport trash truck on route 275. The St. Petersburg fire department sent the truck to the Tropicana Field parking lot to unload. Trouble was, it was 4 p.m. and there was a game between the Rays and the Red Sox at 8. (They had it cleared by 6, and the Rays won.)

Friday Night Lights: Lakewood Advances to Region Semifinals Next Up is Tampa Catholic on the Road The Lakewood Spartans opened the 2022 postseason in fine fashion, rolling over Clearwater 42-13 to delight the fans in what will almost certainly be their last home game of the season.

Clearwater struck first on a long pass to take a 7-0 lead, but Anthony Colandrea threw a 45-yard scoring pass to Aviyon Smith-Mack to tie the game. From there it was all Spartans, with touchdown runs by Traquan Johnson and Montravius Lloyd among others. The lead was 35-7 at halftime.

Lakewood travels to Tampa Catholic next for the Class 2M, Region 2 semifinals. The other semifinal in that region is Berkeley Prep at Calvary Christian. The winner of those games face off on Black Friday, and the Spartans would be the visiting team no matter who the opponent is because of their lower seeding.

The other local team in the playoffs was the St. Petersburg Green Devils, who traveled to Tampa to face the Jesuit Tigers, one of last year’s state champions. It was a long night for the visitors, as Jesuit led 24-0 after one quarter, 38-0 at halftime, and eventually closed the books on a 52-0 win.

amazing turnaround from previous years and a welcome change for a senior class that suffered through a 1-9 season last year, 1-7 in 2020, and 2-8 in 2019.

Final regular season statistics for Pinellas County players were posted recently on the Green Zone Preps website, listing the top five players in several offensive and defensive categories, and several players in The Gabber’s coverage area figured prominently in the lineup.

The top running back in the county were Sammy Miller of Gibbs with 1,425 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. Not far behind in second

place was St. Petersburg quarterback Jeffery Jones with 1,381 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Anthony Colandrea of Lakewood was among the passing leaders with 1,905 yards and 14 touchdowns. One of his favorite targets was Aviyon Smith-Mack, who had 684 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Among the top five in total offensive yards were Colandrea with 2,411 and Jones with 2,136.

On the other side of the ball, Lakewood’s Taveon Wheeler led the county with 11 sacks. Evan Aikens of St. Petersburg had four interceptions to finish tied for second.

The Drunken Taco replaces Gulfport’s Sea Dog Cantina.

Drunken Taco: Gulfport’s New Mexican Restaurant All the way from Fort Lauderdale Beach, a new destination for tequila and tacos officially opened in Gulfport. On Nov. 4, The Drunken Taco held their grand opening on

Beach Boulevard South.

They’re known for their large selection of specialty tacos, their “ginormous margaritas,” and more than 301 tequilas to choose from for tequila tasting. And, of course, they have other Mexican dishes, as well as “gringo grub” such as burgers.

The Drunken Taco also offers happy hour all day, every day, with twofor-one giant margaritas, $4 beers, and $7 vodka doubles.

For the rest of November, their hours are noon to 10 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday.

Gulfport Gives Back to Women’s Health On Nov. 15, the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce, the Brenda McMahon Gallery and artists, and local women-owned businesses donated a total of $1,951 to the Sonia Plotnick Women’s Health Fund.

SPHF’s mission is to promote women’s wellness in the Tampa Bay area. They help provide financial assistance for healthcare as well as “health-related continuing education opportunities for women.”

In Advance of Kristallnacht, Antisemitic Propaganda Arrives in South Pinellas A Gulfport woman found a small plastic bag with a flier outside her home with white nationalist and neo-Nazi propaganda and a QR code that links to an antisemitic, anti-globalist documentary on a German website.

The far-right flier also accuses Jewish people of owning and controlling everything from banks, social media, and slave trades to the news media and vaccine makers.

Kailey Blackbourn said she found the far-right propaganda in her yard around 4 p.m. on Nov. 7.

“They used the bag of sand to hold it down,” Blackbourn, told The Gabber.

Blackbourn does not believe she was specifically targeted by the mini pamphlet.

Last week, residents in Gulfport and St. Petersburg started finding antisemitic missives like this one in the driveways and on their lawn.

my daughter is mixed; I felt like someone was watching us go in and out of the house. We noticed a bag in our neighbor’s yard as well so [we were] probably not targeted,” Blackbourn said.

The flier includes the phrase “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children,” a popular white supremacist slogan.

The mini pamphlet also has phrases such as “Wake Up White Man” and “The Great Replacement Theory is not a theory. It is a fact.”

The latter refers to a theory by a French white nationalist writer positing that global elites are conspiring to replace white working-class populations with immigrants. It is popular with neo-Nazi and other rightwing and xenophobic groups.

Gulfport Police Sergeant Thomas Woodman said the municipal agency received two calls about the pamphlets and said there were additional recipients.

“Multiple fliers in plastic bags weighted down with sand were distributed in various yards,” Woodman said.

The anti-semitic playbills also include a hateful caricature of a Jewish man. The literature has free speech protections so there is no police investigation, Woodman said.

Anti-Jewish pamphlets were also recently distributed in St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg Police Department spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez said officers were called to Burlington Avenue North and 2nd Avenue North early Saturday, Nov. 5.

“Someone had thrown anti-semitic leaflets on lawns. Our officers collected about 70 leaflets, and a resident reported that he had disposed of about 100 leaflets he had picked up in his neighborhood,” Fernandez said.

She said those pamphlets also pressed far-right propaganda that Jews control banks and the media.

These antisemitic packages arrived the week preceding the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the night in 1938 when antisemitic riots, incited by government hate speech, started and lasted 48 hours in Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. People vandalized 7,500 Jewish-owned schools, homes, and businesses; destroyed synagogues and artifacts; and killed almost 100 Jews. In addition, police arrested some 30,000 Jews and sent them to concentration camps. The government blamed the Jews for the riots and fined them one billion reichsmarks, or $400 million 1938 U.S.

Studio Grand Central’s Latest Spurs Thought, Discussion

If you go see “A Number” at Studio Grand Central, plan on leaving the theater wanting to talk more about the play.

Domestic drama? Suspense thriller? Science fiction? “A Number” is all that and more. An award-winning 2002 one-act by British playwright Caryl Churchill (“Cloud Nine”), the play packs profound questions about identity, fatherhood, and the future into a crisp 60 minutes that only gradually reveals the who, what, and why of its characters. The Players’ production has been masterfully directed and designed by Alan Mohney, Jr., with deeply felt performances by Ward G. Smith as Salter, a father with a secret, and Anthony Gervais as his son.

Or rather, sons. As the play begins, Salter’s 35-year-old son Bernard has discovered through hospital records that he is not Salter’s only progeny. There are others — identical twins created through some kind of genetic theft, his father surmises — and Bernard is not even sure he’s the original.

Salter’s reaction to this news is to quantify: He wants to know how many of these “things” are out there, and wonders if his son could sue the hospital for the value of each duplicate life. “I think it’s… like half a million each person,” Salter says, “because what they’ve done they’ve damaged your uniqueness, weakened your identity, so we’re looking at five million for a start.”

This talk of money and identity is a conversational feint on Salter’s part – we can tell he’s hiding something – but it turns out to be central to questions raised by Churchill’s play. Can

human life be reduced to a monetary value? Would you pay to create a new life – a new son? And are we really all that different from one another anyway?

We meet more than one of Salter’s sons in the course of the play. It’s to Gervais’ great credit that he manages to make each of these men absolutely distinct from one another: one nebbishy and distraught, one chillingly disturbed, and a third unflappably happy.

Salter is himself a shape-changer, from self-preserving to guilt-ridden.

Smith navigates these shifting emotions with great subtlety, though he’s so comfortable turning Churchill’s elliptical dialogue into natural-sound-

ing conversation that we occasionally miss hearing some of his words.

Indeed, Churchill’s script is a tough one to perform. But director/designer Mohney has clear control of his vision, carefully orchestrating the tensions between father and sons and making courageous staging decisions, like the shadowed face-offs between the two men at the end of each of the play’s five scenes.

A word has to be said for his set design — a spare but elegant grey-paneled living room with a backdrop that rises to the full height of Studio Grand Central’s performance space. The backdrop is covered with multi-colored horizontal LED lights programmed brilliantly by lighting designer Michael Horn to punctuate the play’s varying moods. Window blinds?

Microscope slides? DNA ladders? You decide.

If you go to “A Number” (and you should), be sure to make plans for drinks or dinner after the show, because you will want to talk about it.

A Knock at the Door

Nora’s back, and she’s on a mission.

back. The result, in the Tampa Repertory Theatre production at Stageworks through Nov. 20, is a totally enthralling, thrillingly staged battle of hearts and minds.

The play opens in silence. All we see is an austere 19th-century drawing room, designed impeccably

by Steven K. Mitchell: a few chairs, a desk, parquet floors, and the door.

Then there’s a knock. It’s Nora, of course.

Emilia Sargent vividly conveys the arc of Nora’s journey. At first — flitting about the stage, toying with the nanny, making her guess what she does for a living — she seems still to be playing the “little featherhead,” as her husband, Torvald, liked to call her. The nanny, Anne Marie (a sublime Karla Hartley), is suspicious.

“I feel like I’m being set up,” she says in a line that’s typical of the script’s colloquial (and often very funny) vernacular.

Then Nora reveals her mission.

She has discovered that Torvald has never signed their divorce papers, meaning that she is still officially a married woman. As such, everything

she has been doing since leaving him — writing books, earning money, taking lovers — was illegal.

Torvald (E. Peter Callender, in a powerful performance, by turns forceful and poignant) refuses to sign. And when Nora asks Anne Marie to assist in changing his mind, it begins to dawn on her that however well-founded her reasons for leaving, she’s been oblivious to the consequences, especially for Anne Marie.

“After all the problems I’ve already fixed for you I have to fix this too?” demands Anne Marie, “F**k you, Nora. F**k you.” In Hartley’s delivery, that “F**k you” is at once heartfelt and hilarious.

Nora’s now-adult daughter Emmy is not quite an ally, either. Played with bracing self-assurance by Bria Matthews, Emmy contemplates her mother with the cool regard of a scientist studying a specimen. She not only counters Nora’s arguments against marriage, she comes up with an alternative solution to her dilemma — one that makes Nora fear for Emmy’s future as well as her own.

Legendary Youth

“Among the Beautiful Beasts” is Biofiction About Marjory Stoneman Douglas In the annals of South Florida history, Marjory Stoneman Douglas looms large, both because of her tremendous accomplishments – a pioneering writer and advocate for both women’s rights and environmental conservation – and the impressive span of her life. Arriving in Miami in 1915, she had witnessed both the city’s ebullient youth and its glossy adulthood by the time she died in 1998.

So it’s surprising to find her in the opening pages of Lori McMullen’s biofiction debut, “Among the Beautiful Beasts” (She Writes Press, 2021) fleeing breathlessly in the night from an unknown pursuer through the Everglades she would later immortalize in her books. “This is love, I think,” declares a then-30-year-old Marjory.

“This is the only kind of love I’ve ever known.”

Who – or what – is she running from? And how will she escape?

These are the questions the novel plumbs, with an honest and lyrical voice, tracing the course of Marjory’s childhood and young womanhood, her slow but determined coming into her own. Like the young woman running through the dark, it’s a story that is fraught with surprising perils – an estranged father, mental illness, a failed marriage, and the pressures of a society that does not easily tolerate

Lori McMullen’s dazzling debut profiles the youth of a Florida icon – writer and activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas – and paints a lavish picture of Miami’s early days.

brilliant women. This fictionalized life story unlocks dimensions of the real Douglas’s life that are often lost in the wizened, smiling, sun hat-sporting portraits of the mature Florida heroine.

Even if you’re not a Florida history buff – or, for that matter, a women’s history or an environmental history buff – the book might still dazzle you with passages like McMullen’s description of a 1915 party at the ostentatious Vizcaya mansion: “I was there to watch them,” recounts the cub reporter Marjory. “Like an ornithologist, little notebook in hand, I kept to the fringes and observed the society ladies and pioneer-baron gents in their rainbowed plumage, recording their

movements and their conversations as they strutted through whatever polished rookery they happened to be in that night.”

Gorgeous! And just one of the descriptions of life in the heady early days of Miami and South Florida that make this book sparkle.

One thing that’s less clear is where the truth of Douglas’s life ends and McMullen’s fictionalizations begin, and some readers may find themselves scrambling to Google to clarify which is which (and they’ll find a lot of crossover). Even so, McMullen’s story of finding your way through your dark night of the soul – or a dark night in the Everglades – is a powerful and powerfully told tale in its own right.

food Review: Fall-Inspired Beer on St. Pete Beach

Cheers to fall beers! Here’s the Gabber’s review of Mastry’s fall speciality brews.

Pumpkin spice and fall colors do not just go away once it hits the month of November. While some people already claim it to be “Christmas season,” I refuse to let go of fall. Luckily for me, Mastry’s Brewing Co in St. Pete Beach still has their seasonal brews on tap, so I did what any young adult of legal drinking age may do... drank alcohol.

For starters, I went to Mastry’s with a mission to taste test all of their best fall beers. And as the responsible 22 year old I am, I bought a flight of beers instead of getting absolutely wasted.

At Mastry’s, you can get a flight with up to four different drinks.

I chose their #Basic Pub Ale, Fall Shakecation, Oktoberfest, and Honey Basil.

The #Basic Pub Ale made its introduction back in the beginning of October. This ale is a dark mild brew with pumpkin, spices, and lactose.

Mastry’s collaborated with The Spice and Tea Exchange of John’s Pass to curate this drink. Both teams worked together to create a “light and sessionable” fall beer that had a distinct flavor of pumpkin while also hinting tastes of fall spices.

Out of the four brews, the #Basic Pub has to be my favorite. This drink is exactly what I want to be drinking for the rest of the fall season. It is low in alcohol content which makes it perfect for a chill night sitting next to a fire while wearing my favorite cozy flannel. #Basic Pub is definitely giving #Fallvibes.

My second favorite is Fall Shakecation. This is a milkshake IPA with cranberries, pecans, and lactose.

Essentially, this brew is Thanksgiving in liquid form. A milkshake IPA is the combination of lactose and fruit. This mash-up creates a lightly creamy brew with a tart sweetness.

It’s light and fruity qualities shapes it to be a fantastic fall drink for the Florida November weather.

Although #Basic Pub and Fall Shakecation found ways into my heart, I had two more drinks to try.

Now onto the third brew, Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest is a German lager, but in America, it tends to be brewed a lot sweeter. I had never tried an Americanized Oktoberfest brew before, but I’m not a big fan. I had high hopes since it’s quite popular during the fall season, but I just wasn’t in-

credibly fond of the lingering aftertaste.

Lastly, I tried their Honey Basil beer, an “amber ale with honey and basil.”

I was not a fan. It tasted like the alcohol version of an all-natural cold relief medicine. I have no beef against Mastry’s for this creation, but all I have to say is: To each their own, I guess...

Mastry’s in St. Pete Beach is a nice, low-key spot for a hang out. I’d say it is an even better place to satisfy your love for fall through a flight of beers.

ALEXANDER FAMILY

David George Alexander, born January 23, 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts to Frank Webb Alexander and Emma Geis, died Nov. 1, 2022 in St Petersburg, Florida. He and his wife, Patricia, returned to Gulfport in 2014 for their retirement.

In the late 1940s he designed sets for the New York theater and summer stock, meeting many stage luminaries of the era. He maintained a love of old movies and often entertained guests with “backstage”

trivia. David enjoyed traveling and sailing and one of his great pleasures was owning his own sailboat.

He worked first with his father in Washington, D.C., then owned and operated his own full-service print shop there until 2006. Throughout his life David enjoyed repairing small electronics and appliances.

He designed and outfitted his own woodworking station and produced shelves, desks, and tables for their home. He is predeceased by his brother, Richard, and survived by his wife, three daughters, and two grandchildren. He was attached as a medical corpsman with the Navy to the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, and his ashes will be interred in the Memory Wall on Bay Pines campus.
