Allendale UMC in St. Petersburg disagrees with the traditional Methodist ideas that same-sex marriage doesn’t have a home in the church. But that’s old news.

The first thing I notice about the church: It has no pews.

Church leaders at Allendale United Methodist Church removed the traditional church pews and replaced them with chairs to allow for a more multipurpose temple. With Jesus painted in the rainbow stained glass windows and

This week, we say goodbye to Abby Baker. Abby’s a unicorn: She loves Gulfport, has a passion for journalism, and her time management game in strong (she’s never missed a deadline). I knew Abby wouldn’t stay with us forever – she’s at the start of her career, incredibly talented, and an ideal employee. Last month, American Stage figured out what we already knew and made her an offer she couldn’t refuse; next week, she joins them as the communications coordinator.

“I’ve learned so much from Gulfport, and The Gabber, about community. When I started freelancing four years ago, I was a 21-year-old floored by the amount of people who wanted to show me how great this city is.

It feels like my adopted hometown, and leaving wasn’t an easy choice, but Gulfportians will keep on keeping it Gulfport, and I have no doubt The Gabber team will continue to showcase the beautiful, offbeat, special parts of this corner of Pinellas,” she told me.

Everyone at The Gabber wishes her well, even if her leaving is bittersweet. The timing, though, was fortuitous.

In 2016, Jen Ring attended an opening reception for my Florida photography exhibit, took some pictures, and introduced herself. Later, she sent me a link to her web post about the reception, and I enjoyed her writing and photography so much that I asked her to freelance for me at the alt weekly where I was the arts editor. She said yes, and for three years I had the pleasure of editing her writing.

She didn’t go to journalism school; before changing directions, she worked as a scientist. When she developed scleroderma, she couldn’t work full-time, so she taught herself to take photos and write. Eventually, her scleroderma impacted her lungs so badly that she couldn’t live outside the hospital. She wasn’t coming out without two new lungs, so she called Tampa General home for months, awaiting a donor. In March, doctors performed a double lung transplant, sent her home without her oxygen tanks, and Jen began the road back to normalcy.

“Every day I do something that I haven’t been able to do in years,” she says. “It’s like I’m 18 all over again, learning my abilities, discovering my limitations, and trying to find my place in this crazy world. My life is changing so fast that sometimes it’s overwhelming, but it’s all for the better. Finally, I can breathe again.”

New lungs meant Jen could go back to work, full-time. But not in a lab; she’s ready to start writing full-time. So, while we’re sad to see Abby go, we’re thrilled to welcome Jen as our events editor and arts and features reporter. Abby’s showing Jen the ropes this week, and I have every confidence that Jen is going to be great for The Gabber – and our community.

Please join us in thanking Abby for everything she’s done for all of us, and in welcoming Jen to Team Gabber.

It probably shouldn’t bother me, but it does. My friend always says, not my circus, not my monkey, but… I drive by the Salvation Army truck on Oleander regularly. When there is an attendant in the truck, people drive in, unload their goodies, get their receipts, and seem relieved as they drive off; it’s like they’re leaving a Weight Watchers meeting with a significant weight loss. On the contrary, after sunset, when the attendant has left, the sneaks take over. They’re the folks who drop stuff and neatly line up the boxes and bags, as if they’re doing their civic duty. Folks, why do you defy the rules? Why do you leave stuff when the sign says not to? Salvation Army, why can’t you come up with a system that hinders the ‘stuff leavers’?

Gecko Season Brings More People and, for Some, More Money Gecko season is here.

A string of themed events organized by the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce, culminating in one of the busiest days of the year in downtown Gulfport, begins this week. Some local businesses are thrilled by their economic impact.

“It is almost like a month-long activity,” said Justin Shea, cultural facilities supervisor for Gulfport.

The fun begins this Friday with an art reception at the Catherine Hickman Theater. An annual pub crawl known as Gecko Crawl is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13.

The Gulfport Casino Ballroom is the site of the Gecko Ball set for Saturday, Aug. 27. The following weekend, two days before Labor Day, all of Beach Boulevard will be used for the 22nd annual GeckoFest that officially or unofficially marks the end of summer.

Beach Boulevard will close to vehicles between 28th Avenue and Shore Boulevard. Both of those streets will remain open to eastwest traffic, Shea noted.

GeckoFest is an all-day affair, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The chamber contracts with the City to have four officers from the Gulfport Police Department on site throughout the day, as well as some personnel from Gulfport Fire and Rescue. The City makes an additional investment in the event by having public works employees assist with street closures, keeping watch on sanitation containers, and making sure barricades remain in place.

While the crowds are noticeable, there is no way to accurately judge how many people actually attend GeckoFest because there is not a central point of entry. Spectators can access the Beach Boulevard vendors from various points in all four directions, according to Shea.

ra Banno, was to give people from outside Gulfport a reason to come visit during the summer, which was a traditionally slow time for local businesses.

“Having all of these events through August and up to Labor Day really gives those businesses a push and gets them through the summer,” said Banno.

While a host of people from outside the city descend upon downtown Gulfport for these events, the direct benefit to local businesses varies depending on location and the type of product or service offered. For example, the pub crawl is obviously geared toward a certain type of liquid refreshment.

“We love it. We absolutely love it,” Tiki Bar & Grill owner Mark Amis said

of the Gecko-themed events and other activities that happen during Gecko season. “The more the merrier, as far as I’m concerned. The more they want to do to draw people, the better.”

A participant in the Gecko Crawl along with several other establishments, Amis’ business is also the landing spot at the end of this year’s event for an evening of additional activities. As he talked, he pointed directly across the street at the close proximity of the Casino, site of the Gecko Ball, as well as the plentiful free parking next to the beach.

“Everybody walks by this place during the Tuesday market, on the Fourth of July,” he said, noting other regular Gulfport events. “I’m all for it.”

At the other end of Shore Boulevard, the reaction is a bit different.

Byron Chalfont, owner of Siri’s Gourmet Burgers & Pizza, acknowledged that GeckoFest “is one of our busiest days of the year” but the pub crawl is concentrated away from his establishment and the Gecko Ball “just takes up parking spaces” which are in shorter supply where he is located.

When asked if the Gecko slate of events is great for business, Red Hot Tiki owner Robynne Swanson replied, “If you’re a bar, I guess it is.” She added that even on the day of GeckoFest she doesn’t have any more business than at other times.

One final note for those planning to attend GeckoFest: It is, after all, still summer and it is hot. Shea said one of the major talking points for City personnel is reminding everyone to stay hydrated.

“Bring water,” he said. “We have a cooling station if needed, but our emergency response team will have water on site to keep people hydrated and avoid heat exhaustion.”

She showed up to Allendale and was surprised by the acceptance, notably the LGBTQ+ acceptance in the church.

“I got the closure I needed for sure, and I kept coming back,” she said. “I still have a lot of questions for God, a lot of tough questions, but I feel confident that God is big enough to handle that.”

The meeting rooms that once stood empty are now alive with groups such as the League of Women Voters, METRO Inclusive Health, various 12-step programs, and many more organizations that enjoy use of the building for free.

There’s also a community garden that the church had to fight to build in 2021. After local debate on the garden’s use and aesthetic look in the neighborhood, The St. Petersburg Development Review Commission voted ‘yes’ to the church planting it.

Today, the garden’s used by the community and its earnings are often donated to kitchens that address food insecurity.

A small percentage of what the church is actually used for is religious worship — that happens on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.— but Oliver says that’s fine by him.

“To me, the heart of what Allendale is, is how we work with the community to dismantle the harm that is happening,” Oliver said. “Many of our attendees don’t identify as people of faith but they find themselves meeting at the church.”

idents who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He said that, along with another retired officer and a Gold Star mother, he has formed a nonprofit organization that is now in the fundraising stage of the project.

“We intend to raise the necessary funds to build this monument and place it somewhere in Florida,” he said, adding that it will somewhat

resemble the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. Udovich said he’s obtained a complete list of names of those who listed their primary residence somewhere in Florida at the time of their deaths from the federal government, with the help of U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis. That list is final, since the last person on it died in 2013 or

Having crisscrossed the state while scouting possible locations, Udovich said Gulfport is high on his list.

“I’ve been to 55 or 60 towns in the state, and you are definitely one of the three or four towns we want to talk to about this,” he said.

“You have a beautiful veterans’ park down on the water, and it is plenty big for what we want to do.”

Udovich said he has seen similar parks from Pensacola to Coconut Creek to Jacksonville, and Gulfport’s park is exceptionally well maintained.

His plan is to raise the money, pay for the monument and have it delivered to its new home. Should that home end up being Gulfport, it would then fall upon the City to provide for the necessary surroundings – shrubbery, mulch, walkway or pavers – and perpetual care and maintenance. The City would also be charged with organizing a dedication ceremony.

“This is a first step for us because we intend to duplicate this in other states,” said Udovich. “The day after it is dedicated in Florida, we are going to get in a car and go to Columbus, Georgia.”

Following this preliminary presentation, the council directed city staff to continue talking to Udovich and bring him back at a future date if the project remained a possibility for Gulfport.

Meet the Gecko Grant Recipients: Sunflower School Here’s Why the Gulfport School Made the List This April, the fate of Sunflower Private School in Gulfport was uncertain when the building the school operates out of, Gulfport Presbyterian Church, closed due to a lack of attendance. This summer, the Gulfport Merchants Chamber chose the school as one of three recipients to receive an annual Gecko Grant.

According to Briggs, the board voted unanimously to select Sunflower School as a grant winner.

The school, run by co-directors Bevin O’Brien and Nicole Riveros,

enrolls children entering kindergarten to fifth grade. On any given school day, students grow plants, paint, and walk in a single-file line to Gulfport Beach, where they journal about their marine discoveries.

“We respect what they do for children at Sunflower,” Briggs added.

A New Camera Will Put Gulfport on TV Viewers of local television news will soon be able to see live pictures of Gulfport on the screen from the privacy of their own homes.

Council approved a resolution allowing Earth Networks Inc. to place a weather camera at the Casino at the July 19 Council meeting. The City will not pay for anything.

“This is pretty unique. We’ve tried to do this for several years,” said City Manager Jim O’Reilly. “On your evening news or morning news during the weather report, they’ll show an area or community on the beaches.

You will now have Gulfport on channel 10.”

The camera will go on the side of the Casino facing the bay, according to O’Reilly, and CBS 10 Tampa Bay will televise the images.

A City staff report noted that Earth Networks conducted a site survey in early July. The company manufactures and deploys WeatherBug Weather Stations, each system being a weather sensor suite, a master control unit, a digital display, a communications device, and a sensor shelter for collection, display

Gallery Closing After two decades of showing art in downtown, The Lynn Merhige Gallery [216 4th St. N., St. Petersburg] is closing its doors and selling to the developer who owns the Hollander Hotel.

Owner and shop founder Lynn Merhige is sad to see her small gallery go.

“It’s not by choice,” Merhige said.

The gallery owner co-owns the Fourth Street North building with another family member. When the family member sold his portion of the building, it pushed her to sell her half. She couldn’t justify not selling it with her current profits being so low, Merhige said.

“After he sold his half I felt sort of forced,” Merhige said. “It’s a little disheartening.”

According to Merhige, she’s run her shop since 2002. It’s unclear what the Hollander owner will do with the building, but Merhige says she knows the new owner will gut

the entire floor.

For art appreciators, it’s a loss as well as an opportunity.

Merhige is selling everything down to the bare walls — from paintings to shop shelves — it’s all going for up to 40% off.

The Lynn Merhige Gallery will be open for the last time on Wednesday, Aug. 31. Until then, the shop hours are Thursdays 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Fridays 3-8 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Call for appointments at other times at 727-409-4871.

Before Tash Elwyn served on the Pinellas Education Foundation board, he was a financial advisor trainee on Wall Street in 1993. He worked his way up to CEO and President of Raymond James & Associates, and serves on a number of other boards in St. Petersburg.

On July 1, after seven years as a board member, Elwyn was appointed Chair of the Pinellas Education Foundation’s Board of Directors.

“What gets me out of bed in the morning is the opportunity we have to make a difference in people’s lives,” Elwyn said. “The Pinellas Education Foundation is committed to accelerating students’ success and for some students, that scholarship or mentor makes the difference in the trajectory of their lives, changing outcomes for their families forever.”

The new title means Elwyn will lead more than 30 Foundation leaders to ensure that Pinellas students have the programs and resources to succeed. He succeeds Charles M. Harris, a litigator at Trenam Law. Elwyn’s new role is a cause close to Elwyn’s heart. He and his wife Emily live in St. Petersburg; they have two children.

New Gulfport Resident Comes to Town, Along with her Giant Ant Sculpture In Largo, Jayne van der Voordt’s home was considered “the weird house” in a sea of beige.

When she moved to Gulfport this year, it was time for her to let her artistic flag fly. In sync with her hot pink house, van der Voordt painted and spruced up a mannequin made from found objects (and a living plant growing from her skull) and attached it to a giant metal ant sculpture.

“I felt like it was important that the ant be walked,” van der Voordt said.

Her ant, which she purchased from a Home Goods-type store in St. Petersburg, is outfitted in a punk pink spiked collar that matches her handler’s (named Girlequin) gloves and boots. van der Voordt is not a professional artist, but she’s created her own art for years.

“I wanted to move to a place where it was open minded, welcoming, OK to be creative,” she told The Gabber. `Due to the mainly positive response her offbeat creation has received from neighbors and sidewalk-goers, Gulfport can expect more lawn art from van der Voordt.

arts Looking Through Jeanine Newcombs’ Window St. Pete Artist Paints Intimate Scenes in Morean Exhibit

“Girls Trip.”

Scanning Jeanine Newcomb’s latest series of oil paintings feels like looking at a stranger’s camera roll without permission. Her paintings, all with people as the primary focus, aren’t hyper-realistic. Their smiles are off-kilter, their limbs uneven.

“I make paintings using photos as reference, not to make paintings look like photos,” Newcomb said.

Newcomb, a St. Petersburg artist and illustrator, has an exhibit, Looking Through the Window, at the Morean Arts Center through Aug. 25.

She paints personal moments between friends and strangers, women lounging in their living rooms, a fleeting moment between a posed subject and her viewer. The intimate feelings are intentional, Newcomb says.

“Words are inadequate to capture an intimate feel, but I will say that painting to me is extremely intimate,” she adds. “It’s a bond between the painter, the subjects (human and otherwise), and the materials...If intimacy is conveyed in my work, I have accomplished that goal.”

Young Newcomb grew up in Pennsylvania and went into the art of working with her hands. She worked

in construction, installed decorative tile, and worked as a roofer, among other construction trades. Eventually she earned a bachelor’s in drawing and a master’s degree in psychology, then used her background to teach both art and special education in Pinellas.

It’s in the classroom that Newcomb inspires.

Gina Spano was an AP art student in Newcomb’s class at Seminole High School nearly a decade ago.

But Spano, an artist herself now, still remembers the influence of Newcomb’s teaching.

“I don’t even know how to articulate the significance of her contribution to my growth and identity as an artist. From allowing me to use actual dirt in my artwork, to helping me put together a cohesive portfolio

of 24 pieces that I still take pride in,” Spano said, “Jeanine continues to be a constant source of inspiration and encouragement in my life.”

Who are these people in Jeanine’s window?

“Regarding the people in these paintings: some are loved ones, some strangers,” she says. “’Damon F Ball Henderson’ is a beautiful student of mine who was killed in a police chase. ‘Tree Woman’ was a true phenomenon. ‘Looking Through the Window’ is an homage to the days of Jungle Prada.”

She’s vague, but really, the complicated stories of her painted people are left to the viewer.

“Each painting in the series has a personal story, however, like the architect Eugène Ionesco wrote, ‘explanation separates us from astonishment’,” Newcomb told The Gabber. “I prefer the viewer to interpret the stories themselves.”

While Newcomb is no stranger to exhibiting her art in Tampa Bay, she earned her solo-show spot in the Morean this summer after winning the center’s 2021 Margaret Murphy Steward Best of Show.

It’s tradition for the Morean to grant a solo spot in the gallery.

“Jeanine is the 10th artist to receive this opportunity, and we are pleased to showcase her latest narrative paintings during this time,” the Morean wrote on their website.

Gulfport Gets Giant Gecko

The Ray Domingo Original Will Get Unveiled at GeckoFest The gecko is a go.

At its July 19 meeting, Gulfport City Council granted its final authorization to pay $16,000 to artist Ray Domingo for the creation of the “Welcome to Gulfport” statue.

Domingo has secured the balance of what he said was necessary for the project to be completed.

“I want to thank each and every one of you,” Domingo told the council at the meeting. “I’ve reached my goal as far as fundraising and don’t have to beg for any more money. I am grateful to be in a town with a city council that gets it.”

The City will spend some additional money on the project, aside from what is allocated for Domingo, City official Justin Shea said at the meeting. The City will spend about $20,000 for the cement base, plus money for the eight pilings were necessary for support,

due to the location. There was an additional cost for the pedestal as well as the engineering.

“We are looking at approximately $32,000 to build the foundation for the piece of art,” said Shea, adding that the money is in the Waterfront Redevelopment District budget. City Manager Jim O’Reilly noted that Domingo’s share is in the City’s budget.

The completed statue is expected to be “a 14-foot-high photo opportunity for residents and visitors in the downtown area,” according to a City staff report.

The piece is a collaborative venture in partnership with the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce and will become part of Gulfport’s permanent public art collection.

The unveiling is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. immediately following the walking parade at the 21st Annual GeckoFest.

Gecko Art Show Will Kick Off Gulfport’s Gecko World

Artists Donate Their Pieces, Bidders will Bid, and Gecko Season Begins Each year, Gulfport celebrates the summer with a gecko-themed lineup of festivities spanning from August to September.

First up: the Gecko World art show on Friday, August 5, 6-8 p.m. at the Catherine Hickman Theater.

This year, 10 local artists will donate pieces to be bid and auctioned at the Gecko Ball on August 27. This Friday, eager art-lovers are welcome to pre-bid, but they’ll have to wait till the ball to know who is going home with the art.

Money raised benefits the Gulfport Merchants Chamber, the organization that puts on Gecko World each year.

“This is a great opportunity for people to meet the artists and see what’s new,” said GMC board member James Briggs.

The lineup of artists are chosen by a GMC committee who hand-pick the participants based on interest and talent.

“The more the merrier,” Briggs added.

Though gecko-related art is expected, a handful of creators chose to showcase an unlikely subject for the lizard-oriented event: birds.

Ray Domingo, a Gulfport artist who is in the midst of creating a 14foot gecko sculpture in downtown Gulfport, is donating a pelican piece for this year’s show.

In the past, Domingo’s work has raised as much as $1,300 for a single painting.

“I wanted to paint something that really captured our town, something that someone would love to have in their home,” Folsom said. “I think Beach Boulevard is

one of the prettiest parts of Gulfport.”

This isn’t Folsom’s first time donating work, and it probably won’t be the last.

“We’ve lived here since 1996 and I like to give back to the community,” she told The Gabber.

obituaries Susan “Sue” (Richards) Abbe, 86, passed away July 19, 2022, at Woodlands Retirement Community following a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, John R. Abbe. Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Sue attended The Lincoln School and Endicott College where she excelled in all sports.

Sue found joy in a life well lived, and her friends spanned all generations and ages. She was quick with a joke, had a mischievous grin and twinkle in her eye – you knew when she was planning something! Sue was a champion golfer and sailor, a longtime member of Waterville Country Club (Maine) and Pasadena Yacht and Country Club. She was an active volunteer throughout her life: scouts, swim team, youth hockey, hospital boards, Maine Home for Little Wanderers, Gulfport Chamber of Commerce, and the Gulfport Senior Center.

A lifelong sports fan, Sue instilled in her family a competitive yet compassionate spirit. “Do your best”, “Enjoy your successes but don’t get a big head”, and “Don’t sweat the small stuff” were words to live by.

Sue’s passion for living life to the its fullest will be carried on by her children Anne, Richmond, Dudley, and Ruth along with eight grandchildren and her favorite great-granddaughter.

A private family service will be held at a future date.
