Garden for the Endangered

“This used to be a walkway,” says Donna Sinicrope, pointing down a tree-shaded sidewalk at The Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay, a retirement community in St. Pete. “Now, it’s a garden.”

Looking around, I have to agree.

The courtyard where we stand is dotted with clusters of plantings and a rainbow of blooms – “niches of garden serenity,” Sinicrope laughs. But the stars of the show are the butterflies.

Europe’s burning and 40 million Americans live under heat alerts.

In the midst of this crisis, the July 14 Gabber included downto-earth articles about access to public utilities, gardening in hot weather, and support for the Gulfport Senior Center. This is how we live now, in an era of climate change. What’s needed today is awareness that a major heat wave is a community emergency greater than problems associated with a tropical storm or red tide.

These “inconvenient truths” are seldom acknowledged by journalists, political leaders, emergency planners, or folks involved in the climate change debate. Three things are needed: First, start with awareness that humanity’s

caught in a global public health crisis that continues to develop.

At the grassroots level, what’s needed is a compassionate response that will do some good.

Second, water and energy use are human rights. Some people waste water and energy, while others struggle to pay for the basics. In the midst of climate change, we need a community strategy that keeps everybody connected to essential services.

Last, if humanity can be saved, we’ll be saved by the grace of God and by neighbors who care about neighbors. There’s a need for new technology, and a need to build barriers to control coastal flooding, but these things alone won’t rescue Florida. What’s needed is the power of love, although the word “love” is seldom mentioned by scientists and government agencies.

The University of South Florida PACT (Pre-venting Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training) study needs healthy volunteers to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The study focuses on using computerized brain training exercises with the hope to reduce dementia risk.

The USF PACT team is looking for 3,000 healthy volunteers to combat the growing incidence of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. PACT is currently enrolling adults aged 65 and older with no signs of cognitive impairment, dementia, or neurological disorders.

Once accepted into the study, participants will begin their exercises at a PACT site in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Sarasota, Winter Haven, or Lakeland.

Past research shows that computerized training can help maintain mental and physical function. Healthy older adults who were prescribed 10 sessions of such training had a 4

29% lower risk of dementia after 10 years.

Those completing additional training benefited even more: they were 48% less likely to show signs of dementia 10 years later.

Alzheimer’s disease affects an estimated 6.2 million Americans, including 1 in 9 people aged 65 and older, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. This number is projected to nearly triple to 14 million by 2060. African Americans and Hispanics are especially encouraged to enroll in PACT, as they are nearly twice as likely to suffer from dementia.

As of today, there are no proven cure or treatments that stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.

The few medications currently on the market only provide short-term management of symptoms for those who already have dementia. This is why studies like PACT are so important.

City Manager Jim O’Reilly noted at the meeting that the latest estimates put inflation at 11.3% in Pinellas County over the past 12 months.

The council also passed a separate resolution allocating $349,950.38 in recovery funds for the replacement of the beach playground, including all of its equipment as well as the padded surface upon which it sits. The new playground will consist of various play structures for kids 18 months-12 years and will rest on a new Surf Turf shock-absorbing surface , which is certified, tested, and meets all ADA requirements, according to Gulfport officials.

This project brings the total appropriated ARPA funds to $4,041,478 with just over onethird of the total amount remaining for use.

Gulfport Sets Date for Public Hearings on Tax Rate

The City of Gulfport set two hearings about the proposed millage rate.

Gulfport’s millage rate is expected to stay right where it has been for more than a decade, although each resident’s property tax bill could still increase.

After a reported 15.2% increase in property valuations, the Gulfport City Council has set two public hearings before formally adopting the new millage. Those hearings are scheduled for Sept. 6 and 20 at 6 p.m., which is when regular Council meetings are planned.

“The annual levying of any and all real property taxes by the City requires two public hearings,” said City

Manager Jim O’Reilly.

A tentative proposed millage rate of 4.039 was approved by the council at its July 19 regular meeting. That rate is the same “for the 11th year in a row,” Vice Mayor Christine Brown noted.

If the City were to roll back the millage to provide the same revenue as last year, that rate would be 3.5312, and there would be no tax increase. Adoption of the 4.039 rate would reflect a 14.38% increase over the rollback rate on the City’s portion of a property owner’s tax bill, according to O’Reilly, who add-

ed that each property has numerous variables – homestead exemptions, surviving spouses over 65, being blind, etc. – that could affect the final tax rate. A mil equals $1 of tax per $1,000 of assessed property value, after the exemptions. That means a home with a non-exempt property value of $300,000 will pay $1211.70 in taxes to the City of Gulfport.

Total taxable property valuations for the new tax year increased in Gulfport by $181,370,497, when compared to prior year final valuations.

Monarch continued from cover lars. With higher temperatures spurring butterflies to begin migrating before the milkweed has matured, and milkweed itself declining due to habitat loss and pesticides, monarch populations have seen an estimated 80% loss in the last 20 years.

Last year, they were placed on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s list of Threatened Species. Last week (July 21), the IUCN declared the migratory monarch an endangered species.

So, when a milkweed seedling mysteriously appeared in a gutter above the courtyard, Sinicrope had an idea. Together with a small collection of plants donated by staff and residents, the milkweed became the first planting in a new pollinator garden. Soon butterflies began to appear – along with volunteers.

Two of them have joined us today.

Richard Dawson, who remembers the spectacular blooms of tulips he planted with his wife back in New Jersey, makes sure the new garden is well supplied with plants from his favorite nursery, The Willow Tree.

Michelle Fleishman, a new volunteer, brings her know-how from growing vegetables and giant sunflowers in her garden in upstate New York – “real monsters!” she grins.

Sinicrope’s inspiration is her grandmother’s garden.

“She lost her husband when she was in her 20s. With two kids to raise

on her own, under a lot of stress, her doctor told her, ‘Go home and plant a garden’ – ­ and she did. There was always something blooming.”

With staff help and a budget provided by The Fountains, members of the Garden Club Sinicrope founded help weed, water, and propagate plants, particularly milkweed. They offer classes on the importance of supporting pollinators. Together, they have even secured an official designation for the garden as a “monarch way station” from Monarch Watch, a nonprofit that helps to track and support butterfly populations in the United States.

Right on cue, one of those regal fliers flits onto the scene, settling among some pentas. As we cluster

around, another garden volunteer stops by with elderberry and passionflower plants. A few minutes later, Rick Richards passes through. He has already done his morning volunteering; he carefully waters the entire garden by hand twice daily.

“I like being out early. It gives me a chance to chat with the squirrels!” he jokes.

As crucial as it is to support our pollinators, it’s clear this garden is doing even more than that.

“This place has brought a lot of joy to our community,” Fleishman reflects. “I love seeing people light up when they see our garden.”

To plant a garden, they say, is to believe in tomorrow. And looking around, I believe.

Plant Exchanges Dos and Don’ts

Dear Nano, I’m a longtime Gulfport resident, and a Gabber follower. It’s good that now we have a special section in the paper dedicated to gardening. Very nice. A suggestion: Can you promote some kind of plant exchange? Maybe an evening at the Gulfport Senior Center, or at that park across the street? I myself have a couple of plants that are trying to get another place to live (they are tired of me, and I am tired of them... LOL).

Thanks, –Ines de Azevedo Dear Ines, A plant exchange is a great idea, but there are a few caveats to follow for success. It’s important to know as much as possible about the plants you want to trade. That way you’re not foisting an invasive or troublesome plant on an unsuspecting gardener. For example, many plants grow well here, such as the colorful but problematic Brazilian pepper, brought to Florida in the 1800s as an ornamental.

Birds love its bright red berries, but spread the seeds, so they rapidly take over natural areas, crowding out natives that feed many different species.

Other invasives are Melaleuca (punk trees) from Australia, introduced to South Florida in the early 1900s to dry up the swampy Everglades. Boy, has that backfired!

With no natural enemies (e.g. insects, viruses) to control population, by 1993, Melaleuca colonized up to 20% of all natural land south of Lake Okeechobee, sucking up the native moisture rich muck and thwarting Everglades restoration.

But most plants brought to a swap will be smaller potted plants, shared from divisions or cuttings.

Many gardeners find it helpful to know a plant’s origins, then duplicate those conditions. Tropical rainforest plants want rich, moist soil, so they enjoy frequent misting, while cacti and succulents prefer a dry, sunny location. Some gardeners look up weather conditions in a plant’s original home.

It’s also important to try to find the botanical name, because nicknames may refer to more than one plant. If you offer a plant, tell others what it likes, or didn’t like.

And be sure the plants you swap are healthy and free of diseases or pesky varmints!

Remember, many plants you find at large big box stores often won’t grow well here, such as delphiniums…the gorgeous blue flowers are lovely in late winter, but they’re not perennial in our Zone 9-10. Other problems with greenhouse-grown plants make them finicky, so they may not thrive on your windowsill… it’s not your fault!

The Gecko Recipients: St. Vincent DePaul CARES

The Florida Non-Profit Aims to Provide Relief to Those Facing Homelessness As Florida real estate and rent prices continue to rise, charities like the cross-Florida St. Vincent DePaul CARES aim to provide relief to those who have fallen on hard times.

SVdP does this in 16 counties, including Pinellas, by rehousing families and connecting those experiencing homelessness to local support services. In certain cases, SVdP will offer case management services long after the rehoming process.

The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors describes case management as services that assist in getting people the “medical, behavioral health, housing, employment, social, educational, and other services essential to meeting basic human services” they need.

It’s this reason that the Gulfport Merchants Chamber chose the Florida charity as one of the organization’s three Gecko Grant Recipients. After Gecko World – which includes Geck-

Almost Two Years of Silence

Two Gulfport Officers Still Await Arbitration Ruling An arbitrator held a hearing in October 2020 over the demotion of Gulfport Police Department sergeant and the sanctioning of another officer over their handling of a family dispute on St. Patrick’s Day 2019.

Now – 20 months later – the department and the officers still await a decision from arbitrator Kitty Grubb.

Ken Afienko, an attorney for the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 43, represented GPD officers Rob Burkhart and Cory Smith in the arbitration hearing after the department disciplined them for their handling of a domestic incident involving two brothers in March 2019.

Gulfport Police Chief Robert Vincent demoted Burkhart from sergeant to police officer and suspended him without pay for 84 hours. Vincent also suspended Smith without pay for 24 hours over the incident.

“No ruling,” said Afienko. “She has not responded to my previous two emails, so I assume we are not going to get a ruling from her.”

If Grubb doesn’t rule on the dispute, Aflienko said the police union and City will have to revisit the situation and potentially have to restart the process.

The Seminole-based attorney and mediator will not get paid for her services unless a ruling is rendered, the police union attorney said.

Grubb did not respond to The Gabber’s requests for comment about the Gulfport case.

CITY OF GULFPORT

Chief Robert Vincent stripped Sergeant Rob Burkhart of his stripes over the 2019 St. Patrick’s Day incident and suspended both Burkhart and Officer Cory Smith without pay. Both men brought the case to the union, and the union and the City agreed to arbitration – but the arbitrator’s had the case for 20 months and has stopped communicating with either side.

Vincent also said there has not been a decision rendered. Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly declined comment on the ruling delays and what happens if Grubb does not make a ruling.

“The arbitrator’s decision is still pending,” said O’Reilly. “Unfortunately, It would be inappropriate for the City to provide comment while the case is presently in deliberation.” He did not say what Grubb’s fee is for the hearing. The

Fraternal Order of Police and the City of Gulfport will split the fee, he said.

The case revolves around disciplinary action taken over a 2019 St. Patrick’s Day incident, and whether Burkhart and Smith the family dispute properly. The department and officers dispute the handling of the case, what kind of instructions or guidance the officers received from superiors, and whether they should have returned the same night to check on the situation. The arbitration includes multiple incidences that Afienko argued proves the department metes out discipline in an imbalanced and sometimes retaliatory manner.

The demotion and docked pay were instituted after an internal review by GPD. The officers and the police union challenged the discipline and took the department’s actions to arbitration per their collective bargaining agreement.

On July 24, a crowd stood and applauded outside Smokin’ J’s Real Texas BBQ in Gulfport. The Beach Boulevard restaurant may have seen its last BBQ smoke haze, because owner John Riesebeck is in the process of selling it to a developer.

Riesebeck’s buyer is an investor looking to develop the property at 5145 Gulfport Blvd S. Riesebeck says the sale should be final by Friday, July 29.

“I was hoping someone would take it over; I’ve been quietly on the market for a year and a half,” the BBQ business owner said.

Riesebeck is looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren.

Moving On Up

O’Maddy’s Ready to Expand – With an Upper Deck Is O’Maddy’s getting a new look?

Its owners have the go-ahead from the City of Gulfport for exactly that.

The Gulfport Community Redevelopment Agency, which consists of members of the City Council, voted July 7 to approve a conditional use and special permit through a site plan for additional outdoor seating on a proposed second-floor addition to the existing restaurant. The applicant must apply within one year for the appropriate building permit for the addition, or else the previous approval will expire.

The restaurant plans 70 seats for the upstairs area, City Manager Jim O’Reilly said.

music upstairs, Guenther said, but only acoustic music, not amplified.

O’Maddy’s began as a bar on Shore Boulevard and acquired the restaurant next door, formerly the Pierhouse Grill and Pepper Company, after a 2005 fire shuttered the eatery. A second-story addition was first proposed in 1998 but never acted upon. The two properties were unified in 2006 to connect the restaurant and bar.

The owners approached the City again in 2014 with plans to build a second story and expand the restaurant with outdoor seating. The City approved a variance and conditional use along with the site plan, but they also expired when O’Maddy’s took no further action. That meant the application process would be started a third time to reach the current point in the process.

A variance application to reduce the required 16 off-street parking spaces to zero was approved in July 2021.

Now, O’Maddy’s must apply for a permit.

“To date,” Michael Taylor, Principal Planner for the City of Gulfport, told The Gabber that “the City has not received a building permit application, including building plans, for the proposed second story addition.”

The Gabber’s Adventure Writer Conquers Her Fears and Heads for the Clouds

When she booked the discovery flight out of Albert Whitted Airport, the woman on the phone told Resie Waechter, “it’s the most beautiful view of St. Pete you’ll ever get.” Resie decided to face her fear and give the flight a chance.

We made it: One thousand feet in the air, we soar over Tampa Bay, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and even my alma mater. “Old St. Pete High School, how proudly we honor and praise you…” I hum to myself.

The engine roars in our small Cessna 172-P and I am giddy with excitement. Josh, our pilot, is a British expat I worked with at a local meal prep store while he was in flight school and I taught grade school.

Post graduation, armed with certifications and flight hours galore, Josh is now an instructor at St. Pete Air, the company who educates local pilots-to-be and offers Discovery Flights like this one to potential future aviators. When I learned about St. Pete Air’s Discovery Flights, I immediately knew I had to try one out.

Today feels like the perfect day to fly. I am grateful to be here.

St. Pete Air runs alongside Albert Whitted Airport in downtown St. Pete. If you’ve been in the area for a while, you’ll remember the time the small airport was a hot debate item on the ballot.

The airport won that fight against developers, and Albert Whitted remains a local landmark. When I swim laps at the USFSP pool or walk across campus, I can count on at least a plane or two overhead. I always wave, wondering if it’s my friend Josh up there.

USF is exhilaratingly close to Whitted’s runway: You can feel the adrenaline pulse through your veins.

It’s almost as if you can reach up and touch the bellies of the planes.

I was nervous about flying today — not because I am afraid to fly, but because I am terribly afraid of heights. Being in a large commercial airplane is one thing; the Cessna is so small I fear I will feel unprotected

and panic.

I’m done avoiding great experiences just because I’m scared, though, and I trust Josh to get us through.

When I book the flight, the lady tells me “it’s the most beautiful view of St. Pete you’ll ever get” — and she is absolutely right. I try to keep my cool during takeoff, but my shirt is nearly soaked through with sweat — and it’s not just the Florida heat.

I switch my focus to the rumble of the engine and the speed of the propeller as the houses and buildings seem to shrink below us. My nerves melt away as we reach max altitude and I inhale our surroundings.

My breath catches in my throat: Here is Tampa Bay in all her glory, shimmering with the sun’s rays, so many shades of blue and green I feel like we’re in another place entirely. A bird’s eye view of Florida is enough for anyone outside the state to envy.

We encounter a small bit of turbulence and the Cessna handles it with grace. In a few moments it’s over and we are back to floating. We pass over the hospitals and libraries, the St. Pete Shuffleboard court and then St. Pete High itself.

Soon we approach the Skyway Bridge and Josh chuckles as he promises “it’s a lot further below us than it looks.”

Though I worked up a sweat during preparation for and initial takeoff nerves, I now feel safe and comfortable in the air. It is truly invigorating.

As the 30-minute flight comes to a close, I take one last gulp of the view.

The most beautiful view of the city, indeed. I am grateful to be here, grateful to live here, grateful to fly here.

Real Estate Of Yesteryear

These Homeowners Sit on Gold Mines – But They’re Not Selling A number of stories in this publication and elsewhere over the past couple of years have highlighted how real estate prices have soared in the Tampa Bay region, and in this corner of Pinellas County, to almost insane levels.

Residents in Gulfport and elsewhere have lamented about how they are being priced out of their own homes due to rent increases or landlords selling their homes to take advantage of the current market.

As is often the case, people of a certain age grow nostalgic when thinking of what various items cost in years gone by, whether it be gasoline at the pump or eggs and milk at the grocery store. Housing prices are no different.

One day recently, the staff of The Gabber had a discussion about how interesting it might be to compile a short listing of such real estate transactions of yesteryear. With that in mind, I sought out a few friends on a recent Sunday at my home church in Pinellas Park. Without revealing names or specific addresses to maintain their privacy, here is what I found.

A 92-year-old man and his wife reside on the causeway between Central Avenue and Treasure Island. He purchased their home, which sits directly on the water, in 1979 for $82,000. It’s still in good condition and mostly as it was when he bought it, while neigh-

bors on both sides have torn down the previous structures and erected McMansions.

But they are content with what they have.

“We get calls every day from people asking if we want to sell,” he said with a laugh.

Another gentleman, whose 90th birthday is coming up soon, lives in a home on 49th Street; he and his late wife moved into it 67 years ago.

He paid $12,000 for it. It’s been renovated slightly, with some additions since then, but he noted that, even if he spent as much on improvements as he did on the original home it would fetch more than 10 times that total amount today. But he isn’t

moving, either.

Another man said that his father, who passed away last December at 97, started his business in 1948 on 38th Avenue about a block west of 49th Street. He purchased a ¾-acre lot in that spot for the princely sum of $1,500. That same property sold last year for $300,000.

The property owner’s son told me that a house in the neighborhood behind the lot – the house he grew up in – was bought in 1963 for $32,000.

That man’s son lives there now.

A slightly more recent transaction, a little farther north in Pinellas Park, took place in 1992 when a young couple paid $52,000 for a home built in 1960 on a dead-end street. They still live there, and have raised two children nearly to adulthood in that home.

Next door sits the oldest house on the street, built in the 1950s, that recently sold for $340,000 – despite having virtually no updates over the years except for roof and air conditioning repairs.

What do these examples tell us?

Aside from the obvious fact that times have indeed changed, they serve as proof that for every person who jumps at the chance to squeeze every potential dollar out of his or her property while the market is blazing, there are others who will be content to just stay in the place they have made their home for decades without worrying about where they will go next.

Despite Problems, Gulfport Renews Pinellas Sheriff Contract Gulfport Contracts with PCSO for Dispatch, Forensics, and Other Services

On a night when Gulfport officials addressed a once-a-year decision regarding law enforcement and emergency services, some quirks of the arrangement were coincidentally brought to light.

The City Council voted at its July 19 regular meeting to approve its annual service agreement with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office at a cost to the city of $141,616.44. This provides a number of services for the Gulfport Police Department, such as crime scene, fingerprint identification, evidence storage, communications, and records management. The arrangement has been in place for several years but must be renewed annually.

These services require personnel with advanced and specialized training and equipment, as well as dedicated facilities, according to City officials. Paying the PCSO to handle these tasks with its own fulltime employees allows Gulfport personnel to focus on initiatives more tailored to the city’s needs.

For example, a full-time employee with advanced training in forensic investigation, fingerprint analysis, and evidence control techniques would cost the city approximately $85,000 annually in compensation alone. That doesn’t include the tech-

That’s only one area covered by the PCSO. “Operation of an independent communications center would require the employment of at least five full-time professionals at a cost of approximately $385,000,” a City staff report reads. Gulfport did have its own dispatch, but voted to dissolve it several years ago.

Before this agenda item was covered, a resident gave an interesting account during the public comment period of her dealings with the county’s communications center.

Karen Love reported that she called the non-emergency number in regard to an exchange with someone on a beach who she said was mentally ill and threatened to shoot her. She said the questions asked of her on the phone were “quite absurd.”

According to her account, she told the operator she was at Pavilion Three at Gulfport Beach and was subsequently asked, “What’s the address?”

She said she found the interaction “very unsatisfying” and it was unlikely she would ever call that number again.

“I think you all should give that number a call and see what happens,” she said.

As it turned out, someone else already had.

“I have indeed called that dispatch number and it proves that when you don’t have ownership of dispatch you don’t get the same kind of service,” said Mayor Sam Henderson.

He had made a call when he spotted someone driving a car illegally on the Pinellas Trail. He was asked for an address.

“I didn’t know the address of the Pinellas Trail,” Henderson said with a smile, then turned to Love in the audience. “I feel your pain.”

“Seniors aren’t really a part of the selfie movement, and they’re not being photographed often,” Tagliarino said. “I want to give them a chance to show up, dress up, and have a portrait of themselves they can hold onto.”

Moved by the idea, Tagliarino, who typically shoots fine art and portrait photography, applied for an individual artist grant worth $1,000 from the St. Pete Arts Alliance. The project: Shoot seniors living in Pinellas County, free of charge. She plans to eventually process, print, and showcase her work at the Morean Arts Center in St. Pete.

It’s the first grant Tagliarino ever applied for, and, to her delight, she was approved. Since 2015, artists have applied for the St. Pete Arts Alliance grant in the hope for funds that will go toward a local art project. This year, Tagliarino is among 21 creators chosen for the grant.

To start, she’ll begin connecting with Pinellas independent living facilities and setting up shop with a tripod and her Sony equipment. She may have tea or coffee with residents and use natural lighting to shoot. Her shots will be posed, propfilled, and reminiscent of those ‘90s family shots where everyone wears white button up shirts.

Gio Swaby a Must-See for Anyone Who Appreciates Good Style

I didn’t know what “fresh up” meant until I entered the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg’s Stuart Society gallery. This is where I met Bahamian artist Gio Swaby, through her words and portraits.

Swaby defines “fresh up” as “a Bahamian way to describe someone who is particularly stylish – also used to give props to the wearer.”

Walking through the exhibition, I appreciated the myriad ways Swaby celebrates the style and traditions of Black women. From her use of textiles to the subjects who grace her canvases and how she depicts them, Swaby’s portraits remind us that Black is beautiful.

Swaby didn’t grow up going to galleries and looking at fine art. The daughter of a seamstress, she grew up with textiles. She and her mother used to make church outfits, school uniforms, and clothing for dolls together.

“We cultivated so much love between us through creation,” Swaby said in an interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones. “Because my practice is an expression of love, textiles feel

very fitting and a perfect choice to pursue that.” (Read the full interview in the exhibition catalog, “Gio Swaby Fresh Up.”) Though we only see her textiles at the MFA, Swaby is a multidisciplinary artist. Each of the portraits in Fresh Up began with a conversation or with a letter, as in her Love Letter series. Swaby then considered how she could translate these letters and conversations into visual art. These conversations and photo sessions aren’t the work we see, but it’s an important part of Swaby’s process.

“Most of the people I represent are people I know very personally,” Swaby said in an interview with the MFA’s Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill. “That practice starts with a conversation, an interview process, and a photography session with the person. This work, for me, is so much about this part of connecting and so much about that initial process of being able to share and to generate this reciprocity between myself and the people I’m representing.”

conversations, letters, and photo sessions. They fill the MFA’s galleries with stylish Black women. They wear colorful patterned dresses, pants, and overalls. They sport hoop earrings and strappy sandals. I can’t remember the last time I saw the MFA so full of life. Standing amongst the Love Letter portraits, I feel transported into a great party.

Like all the best gardening books, “Adventures of a Transplanted Gardener” weaves a strand of philosophy into its horticultural lore.

“Managing a landscape,” Stibolt reminds us, “is an ongoing adventure, not a one-time event.”

I’ll try to remember this the next time those pretty red geraniums at Home Depot catch my eye.

This Top Hat-Wearing, BBQ-Selling St. Pete Legend Has a Story Brady Johnson knows how to wear a tux and top hat, whether he’s standing over a sizzling grill in 90º heat or dancing the night away. Either way the 72-year-old, 6-foot, 5-inch tall owner of Mr. I Got ‘Em BBQ is easily recognizable in his self-appointed uniform.

“I’m pretty good at wearing a tuxedo,” Johnson said.

Johnson, known as Mr. I Got ‘Em, owns Mr. I Got ‘Em BBQ. The comfort food stall is a staple at the St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market staple that Johnson started in the late ‘90s. But before he was a local legend, Johnson was a young man growing up on a farm in rural Alabama, in a town called Alberta. He marched in the Selma to Montgomery Marches in 1965, and participated in the civil rights movement led

by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1968, when Johnson was 18, he moved to St. Petersburg. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had just been assassinated while preparing to march with sanitation workers on strike in Memphis, Tennessee. Johnson came to Florida – where his sister lived – to apply for a job with the City of St. Petersburg’s sanitation department to honor the loss of his hero. He got the job, and worked for the sanitation department for 44 years.

“In Alabama, it was different and at the same time, it wasn’t because it was the only way I knew,” Johnson said. “I saw some things I didn’t like.

I just wanted to go to the front of a restaurant and be waited on. What’s wrong with that?”

When Johnson came to St. Petersburg, racism was prevalent in the city. St. Pete’s white-only green benches were banned in the 1960s, but the energy of segregation was still palpable.

Johnson, paying homage to his distant relative Elijah Moore, adopted the habit of wearing a formal suit.

Johnson says Moore was a vegetable vendor living in pre-WWII St. Pete.

Brady Johnson, the 72-year-old owner of Mr. I Got ‘Em BBQ spends his Wednesday evenings tearing up the Gulfport Casino Ballroom dance floor at Swing Night.

He dressed in a tuxedo and would call out “You want ‘em? I got em!” to customers passing by.

Johnson began selling produce in the ‘80s and transitioned to the BBQ St. Pete now knows in the ‘90s, but he kept the name and image of Moore alive.

Though he’s happy he spent his career with the sanitation department, he says things were not perfect. They’re still not perfect, and he’s not afraid to speak out.

“I encountered racism, and I was used to it, being from Alabama,”

Johnson said. “When you’re not white in America, you learn how to be Black in America.”

When Johnson isn’t selling his turkey legs and ribs, he’s dancing.

Swing dancing, to be precise.

Johnson often goes to the Gulfport Casino Ballroom to dance. The crowd knows him well, and he’ll dance the night away with multiple partners.

Not always, but sometimes, Mr. I Got Em’ wears his tuxedo on Wednesdays. He owns 30 of them, after all.

Moukhtar Elnabarawi Oct. 18, 1931-July 8, 2022 Moukhtar was a fixture at the Chase Park tennis courts. He often said as long as you play tennis, you’ll have friends. Born in Egypt, Mo came to the United States with an MD and soon found employment at prestigious Johns Hopkins. Upon retirement, he settled in Gulfport at the Town Shores complex. He was known for encouraging youngsters to play tennis, giving out free tennis rackets. He loved animals, reading, and a spirited conversation. He will be missed.
