Pride in Paradise

Pride is a year-round celebration in Gulfport, but there is always extra love spread during the month of June.

The City of Gulfport held the fourth annual Gulfport Pride Festival June 1.

The City’s official Pride flag-raising ceremony kickstarted the day.

Food trucks, businesses, and other groups lined on Beach Boulevard.

Store fronts hung up Pride banners and flags.

People who identify as and support the LGBTQ+ community and allies dressed in their best Pride attire.

voices Gulfport Pride Festival Editor’s Note: We received queries from multiple sources about a Facebook post from a vendor at Gulfport’s Pride festival last week.

So we asked one of the organizers, Gulfport Council member Paul Ray, to respond.

Response from Paul Ray We strive to make Gulfport Pride inclusive and a safe and friendly space for all participants. The LGBTQ+ community itself includes Log Cabin Republicans, for example, and we personally have several Lesbian and Gay friends who are Trump supporters. We cannot — and will not — try to censor vendors or attendees from wearing a shirt we don’t agree with, and cannot get involved with such issues unless that person gets unruly.

We did not give any vendor the designation of “Official Festival Merchandise’’ for the Gulfport Pride Festival. The vendor in question had a banner up from other, unrelated events. By the time it was brought to our attention, the festival was almost over, so there wasn’t much point in asking them to take it down. Moving forward, the board of Gulfport Pride will be

Gulfport Library An article about the Gulfport Library ran the wrong mission statement for the library’s Circle of Friends. The mission statement for the Gulfport Library Circle of Friends is as follows: “The Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Library is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes to enhance the development of library facilities and services, community building, and support for literacy and learning.”

St. Pete Beach District Fire Chief An article about the arrest of St. Pete Beach District Fire Chief did not list an acting district Fire Chief.

“The position will be filled by an Acting District Fire Chief, or by an Administrative Chief Officer depending on shift schedules,” according to the City of St. Pete Beach.

Additionally, this article listed McClave as the “Fire Chief.” McClave is a “District Fire Chief.” The St. Pete Beach Fire Chief had no involvement in the incident.

In Gulfport, people recognize love is love regardless of the month, and Gulfportians and friends thoroughly celebrated Pride.

St. Pete Beach Comprehensive Plan According to Florida law, Florida Cities must assess their comprehensive plan at least once every seven years. According to Florida law, a comprehensive plan “shall provide the principles, guidelines, standards, and strategies for the orderly and balanced future economic, social, physical, environmental, and fiscal development of the area that reflects community commitments to implement the plan and its elements.”

In other words, it’s a blueprint for a community — one that includes government finances, the environment, community character, and yes, development.

Ordinance 2023-10 makes the changes to St. Pete Beach’s comprehensive plan. This makes sure the City complies with current Florida and Pinellas laws.

An Unhappy Mayor Mayor Adrian Petrila spoke up, not in opposition of the St. Pete Beach comprehensive plan, but to Kimley Horn.

“For context, this was first brought to the commission I believe in October for the first vote and draft, which I voted in favor for at that time. I don’t think I’ll be able to support it today,” said Petrila.

“I will repeat what I’ve said on a number of occasions: With this particular firm, there appears to be a conflict of interest, because since October, they’ve taken on additional clients that may or may not be working for or against, or in opposition to the City,” he said.

“At this point, I personally cannot trust the verbiage that you’re putting in there to be in the best interest of the City, because you’ve

brought up issues with making new committees. Mayor Petrila spoke about how there are already boards and resources in place that could be used to make resilience decisions, instead of making a new committee.

Interim City Manager Wayne Saunders said that in order to make this a possibility, the City would need to redefine the responsibilities of a committee or board. City Attorney Andrew Dickman echoed this, saying the Planning Board would be a good place to start, as their responsibilities include direction from the City commission or ordinances.

The commission decided the planning board would be the place to start the resilience planning.

The commission discussed a resilience committee and pay plans for firefighters.

“My issue is with the messenger,” Petrila replied.

DiMaria spoke to the Mayor’s concerns, saying that he understands why Petrila is upset.

“I want to assure you that either of us would lose our certification if we were to do anything below board,” DiMaria said.

The ordinance passed 4-1, with a no from Petrila. The City passed Resolution 2024-02 right after the ordinance. The resolution allows the City to send the changes in the plan to FloridaCommerce to make sure it is compliant. FloridaCommerce is a State organization focused on keeping the economy strong through disasters and major issues that slow down business.

Resilience Committee Rzewnicki brought up an issue that continues to be discussed at St. Pete Beach Commission meetings. In preparation for hurricane season, the City looks at how it can be more resilient. Rzewnicki spoke about the possibility of creating a resilience committee in the City specifically for making the City ready for disasters.

While the commission and Mayor agreed with the sentiment, they

Gulfport Hosts a Pride Flag-Raising Ceremony

City and County officials and supporters came together to celebrate the LGBTQ community at Gulfport’s Pride flag raising ceremony.

The City of Gulfport held a Pride flag raising-ceremony to kick off the Gulfport Pride Festival on June 1.

At 10 a.m., close to 100 people gathered around the south end of the Gulfport Public Library. City and County officials and Gulfport Police officers stood by the flagpole. Gecko Queen Robert Daunch and candidates for Florida’s 13th Congressional District Whitney Fox and John Liccione stood alongside them.

Gulfport Vice Mayor and Council member Ian O’Hara (Ward IV) introduced the ceremony’s speakers.

Council members Paul Ray (Ward III) and April Thanos (Ward I), Pinellas County Commissioner Charlie Justice, and Pinellas County School Board Member Caprice Edmond spoke before the flag raising.

Justice welcomed the group of Pride supporters as he gave the first speech.

“Gulfport has always set the standard,” Justice said. “Gulfport was years ahead of its time as far as being an open and welcoming community for our LGBTQ community.”

Justice said how there are communities that want to “diminish the rainbow.”

“Because of people like you and communities like this, we will not let that happen,” said Justice. “The rainbow will stay bright.”

The ceremony continued with Edmond representing District 7 from the County’s school board.

“We will continue to fight and advocate for what’s right,” Edmond said.

“So as we kick off the flag raising and celebrating Pride, I am here to encourage you…to continue to have faith and advocate that love is love.”

Edmond said out of 67 Florida Counties, Pinellas County is one of 11 that has an Inclusive Schools Support Guide. The guide provides ways that schools can create safe environments for students through reviews of “federal, state, and local laws and policies.”

Afterward, Thanos spoke, accompanied by her dog Flora. She reminded the crowd of the importance of voting.

“Vote, vote, vote, vote, vote,” said Thanos.

The Board President of OUT Arts & Culture, formerly the LGBTQ Resource Center, Paul Raker, shared his excitement for the organization’s ArtOUT exhibit. For the month of June, guests can explore the signature Pride art exhibit in the library and online.

Later, Raker expressed his gratitude.

“Our power is showing up to events like this,” Raker said. “Thanks so much for being here. We appreciate it.”

Gulfport Pride Festival Ray concluded with one final speech. He recognized historic Pride movements that led societal equality to where it is today. He mentioned the Stonewall Riots, Daughters of Bilitis, Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, and Cooper Do-nuts Riot.

Additionally, he explained the color meanings in the Pride flag.

“The raising of this flag is our statement that we are one human family,” Ray said. “In a single voice, we need to state it simply: We are Gulfport.”

The crowd cheered and clapped as the flag moved up the pole. The Pride flag flies high adjacent to the American flag in Gulfport.

Creative Pinellas’ Summer Art Exhibits This summer, The Gallery at Creative Pinellas offers two shows reminding us why art isn’t just a pleasant retreat from everyday life.

It’s also a vital way of capturing and reimagining that life.

The 2024 Emerging Artist Exhibition (May 9-July 21) and Flora & Fauna (May 23-July 7) turn the lens on contemporary issues such as the environment and homelessness, as well as on personal experiences such as grief, in works that are both beautiful and resonant.

2024 Emerging Artist Exhibition The 2024 Emerging Artist Exhibition features the 10 recipients of this year’s Creative Pinellas Emerging Artist grants, including painters, photographers, poets, performers, and installation artists, many of whom work in multiple fields. The grant intends to foster community between outstanding artists as they continue to develop their practice, and so it has, according to 2024 grantee Vanessa Cunto. Creative Pinellas has blogs documenting the artists’ processes and experiences.

Transitioning from a career in video production into graphite drawing, Cunto found strength in sharing the journey with her cohort (the eighth group of awardees).

“Not since I’ve been in school have I had such a great network of people,” she said.

Beth Gelman, Senior Director of Arts and Cultural Programming, agreed.

“There’s something special about this group,” Gelman said. “They have such an amazing inner light.”

That incandescence is clear from the moment you walk into the gallery. Works range from the small and subtle, like Cunto’s slightly surreal and entirely exquisite drawings.

They inspired by the still lifes of the Dutch Masters, to fiery and phantasmagoric, like the video clips of

Reflecting that flame, Harriet Monzon-Aguirre’s expansive oil landscapes of Old Tampa Bay glow with warm red undertones. This highlights the healing she sought in nature as she coped with her mother’s illness.

Large installations, such as Luci Westphal’s poignant “Public Walls and In-Between Spaces,” stretch into the gallery’s open space and invite interaction.

Westphal’s piece features a plywood structure decked with her photographs of cityscapes and graffitied walls from across the world.

Inside, the shelter protects a small camp of quilt, suitcase, and personal possessions – summoning the real people behind public perceptions of homelessness.

Letters also make a significant appearance. On one wall, Tyler Gillispie’s poems eloquently speaks to past and contemporary efforts to efface Florida’s LGBTQIA+ community. These poems are rendered in bold prints produced by his fellow honoree Kaitlin Crockett. Opposite, a crowd of Crockett’s letterpress and risograph bills vibrantly declares “We Do Not Work For The Machine.”

The collaborators take the oft-cited power of words to another level. They give them shape and color, leaving, one might say, a powerful impression.

“I love the strong point of view we hear from each of this show’s contributors,” said Cunto. “There are so many ways for visitors to interact.”

In the other half of the gallery, an equally captivating spectacle is in bloom.

Flora & Fauna features six artists’ views on the natural world. The production for the show came from Creative Pinellas’ Beyond Placemaking grant program. According to Creative Pinellas, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) funds the grant for the artist recipients and nonprofit organizations.

The Flora & Fauna collective chose to partner with Florida Botanical Gardens. Edel Alvarez Galban (who paints under the name A Galban) explained how this focuses on outdoor education. The project includes multiple events in the Florida Botancial Gardens, such as a community plein air painting session and creating recycled materials into art.

“We all see life, human beings, nature in general,” said Galban, who paints in multiple media while also practicing family medicine. “But we all see it differently.”

Galban emphasized that it’s the process of seeing that inspires people to care, support, and protect.

Throughout, visitors will find the polychromatic Rorschach-like creatures of Josignacio, who pioneered the use of plastic paint on paper and canvas as part of the New Cuban Art movement of the 1980s.

These bold images contrast with Frolián Escobar’s ephemeral “Jardines Invisibles” series. Jewel-toned, peacock-like birds wind through a forest of densely interwoven trees, all fading like the last moments of a dream.

Yet another lens on nature comes through Leslie Hiatt’s brightly stylized botanical paintings, which impose a lace-like layer of roses across ombre canvases.

I was particularly drawn to “Sacred Maui Gardens.” This centers a human face among tropical plants, with the delicate tracings of birds hidden throughout.

Among this menagerie of images, A Galban’s quirky, cockeyed creatures – including birds, dogs, snails, and even plants – stand out with

a rakish charm. His “Animals Picnic” features a peaceable kingdom of creatures sharing a blissed-out feast on a patchwork quilt (suspending their typical predator-prey feeding habits). Galban laughed as he described his process for creating the painting.

“Nature is a place we all share, and we all should take care of,” he said, echoing the sense of joyful unity that pervades the image.

He recalled the inspiration for the half dozen colorful birds that line the treetops in the image. When visiting Puerto Rico, he heard the mysterious warbling of feathered foresters.

However, he could never quite seem to spot them.

He later learned they weren’t birds at all.

“They’re actually frogs,” Galban said. “There’s a native coquí frog that sounds just like birds!”

This place where imagination and perception meet the living world is exactly where “Animals Picnic” developed. Galban said “Animals Picnic” is exactly where art can make an intervention into the cause of conservation.

Or as Gelman put it, “this exhibit reminds us to stop and really look

at where we live. The art here celebrates this, and brings our engagement with nature front of mind.”

Support the Arts and Artists Both exhibits underscore the critical role that art and artists play in keeping our hearts open and our minds attentive to the challenges our world faces today. Creative Pinellas CEO Margaret Murray said this is one reason why local arts agencies work hard not just to promote the arts, but to support artists.

“A key challenge in our field right now is the environment,” she said.

“Allowing artists to develop and have a high standard of living. That’s what everyone is trying to address.”

So while you’re exploring installations and pondering paintings, don’t forget that you’re also gazing into that ancient and important mirror-onto-life. Along with the art that challenges our minds and restores our souls. And don’t forget to appreciate the artists, too.

Terry Guest’s Best Work (So Far) at Sarasota’s Urbanite

As Big Man “helps” explain the legend, we get enough of the story to understand its folkloric roots — and a taste of the rich sibling relationship between the two. That taste leaves us wanting more. Coles is a force; you can’t look away when Pickle speaks. Thankfully, Rose’s brilliant talent matches her. However, he never upstages her, although Guest allowed Big Man some of the most deliciously delightful lines in the show.

Welcome to Oak

The world premiere of Terry Guest’s new play, Oak, at Sarasota’s Urbanite, is riveting — but there’s another reason you should see it.

It’s Urbanite, so I was prepared for a powerful show.

I wasn’t prepared for something that hit so close to home. Not on a personal level, but on a geographic one. The world premiere of Terry Guest’s latest play, Oak, at Urbanite Theatre in Sarasota, explores a variation of a Roser Park urban legend: the Mini Lights.

In Oak, the characters don’t call them the Mini Lights; after the show, I asked Guest who, along with director Mikael Burke, attended the Sarasota world premiere, and he said he hadn’t heard specifically about them but instead based his work on an amalgam of folk legends.

In 2017, an article in The Weekly Challenger described the Mini Lights thusly: “The local Mini Lights urban legend of little green creatures snatching and eating children near Booker Creek or Lake Maggiore has been around for decades ... Looking back, some adults may think the Mini Lights was just a tool used by parents to make sure they got in the house before dark,” Jabaar Edmond wrote.

He also wrote that “most urban

legends are rooted in truth, and this one is no different.”

Or, as Pickle (Trezure B. Coles), the play’s everyman, tells us at the top of the 90-minute show: Just because it’s a legend doesn’t mean it’s not true.

The Odella Monster Who is the Odella monster? At the top of the show, Pickle and Big Man, her little brother (William Rose II) tell the red-eyed monster’s story.

A enslaved woman who tried to run to freedom but instead drowned in Odella Creek, punishment for leaving her baby — the product of rape — behind.

As a result, Black children in the town of Oak, Georgia disappear at what should be an alarming rate, taken, many believe, by the Odella monster. Of course, it’s only alarming when a white girl goes missing, an upsetting point subtly made throughout the play. (In 2019, 64,000-plus Black women were still missing in the United States, although, as the NAACP points out, missing white women get the lion’s share of media attention.)

Trezure B. Coles cogently paints a resonant picture of Pickle; so much so that the audience cannot look away when she speaks.

Pickle and Big Man’s cousin, Suga, a luminous study in sweet-faced girlishness Jaeda LaVonne so expertly crafts for this role. They’re all there, in Oak, living next to the shadows of the monster, although, as we learn, the Odella Monster isn’t the only monster, and, for some, the Odella Monster may be the better monster.

Oak’s story and action are both studies in dichotomy — mother and child, brother and sister, man and beast — and cacophony. We hear the actors the most clearly when they all talk at once, in a rush. Though we can’t make out the words, we feel their emotions.

horror — let’s go ahead and say yes, the press is right, it’s Southern Gothic but oh, it’s so much more — and director Mikael Burke, along with a richly talented cast and the production team at Urbanite let loose that horror on the audience.

But this is not the Southern Gothic horror of Faulkner’s freeform yet remote The Sound and the Fury or the lighthearted and abjectly terrifying Grady Hendrix’s The Southern Book Club’s Guide To Slaying Vampires. This is a cultural, geographic horror far more terrifying because it’s based on something real.

Exciting New Happenings I had the pleasure of sampling with Jason Liggitt, director of engagement at St. Pete Distillery.

Not only did he give me an update on the on-site bee colony (who are thriving), but he shared exciting new happenings on the premises.

The distillery continues to build out their production line and tasting lab.

The goal is to create a guest experience where they can waltz straight into tastings with Master Distiller Warren Gardner. Essentially, this creates an experience with the production and functional retail space.

Because of their community-focused mindset, St. Petersburg Distillery plans to build an exhibition hall and a full service restaurant.
