The majority of them were caused by drivers pulling too far into the parking spaces, their front ends nosing over the sidewalk and into the vendor spaces. The only places that really felt safe were the spaces that had parking bumpers that were installed in front of outdoor restaurant seating areas. Every parking space on Beach Boulevard should have those parking stops. They are not always effective at completely stopping cars, but they certainly can be helpful!

When I met with Laneau to discuss today, however, is simpler than that — at least on the surface. Today, he and I are here to talk fishing.

Laneau is so passionate about fishing — and about helping kids — that he’s given more than 1,000 rods away and is now focused on a fundraiser to build a pier behind Kenneth City’s Town Hall so kids will have a safe place to fish.

He raves about the projects, and even offers to go take a picture of the lake for me.

Laneau’s first fishing trip as a kid himself was anticlimactic. His father, a fly fisherman, accidentally caught a triple-barbed hook in his son’s ear, which landed him in the emergency room. An experience like that, I would think, is more than enough to keep a child away from the mere sight of a fishing pole.

Give up on fishing? On the contrary.

“No, that’s how I first got hooked,” Laneau laughs.

Laneau has lived a fascinating and full life, and at 91 years old is nowhere close to stopping.

“I am busier now as a retiree than I ever was while working,” he says.

Laneau has spent the last two and a half decades giving free fishing rods to kids and teens to keep them out of trouble. He looks for good deals on fishing rods at flea markets and ga-

rage sales, then cleans and oils the rods, replaces parts as needed, and finds a good home for the rod in need of a kid.

“I give to the needy, not the greedy” is his mantra.

Laneau had a goal of 1,000 rods, and after achieving that goal, he turned his ministry over to Bennett Rodriguez, a friend who works for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Now, raising funds to build the fishing pier is Laneau’s primary focus.

“Kids that fish in their spare time

will keep out of trouble. Kenneth City has a nice lake, but it is not accessible for fishing because the banks are too steep and dangerous,” he says.

So Laneau started a fundraiser with a $1,100 donation from the Kenneth City Social Club treasury. The rest, he wants to raise by using fliers, social media, and word-of-mouth.

The fishing pier will cost an estimated total of $35,000 – but the number does nothing to deter Laneau, just as getting a triple-barbed hook caught in his ear did nothing to deter him from fishing as a kid. Laneau is convinced they will reach their goal and build a nice pier for local kids.

After spending a couple of hours getting to know this incredibly accomplished, driven, generous man, I have faith they will pull it off. After spending time with him and his charming grin, quick wit and warmth, I am convinced of two things: There are still really, truly good people in this world.

What You Need to Know About the New SunRunner Lanes For the past year or more, motorists along the 1st Avenue corridors in St. Petersburg and down Pasadena Boulevard have seen the transformation of a single lane in each direction between downtown St. Pete and the beaches into ones set aside for express bus service scheduled to begin in the next few months.

The most recent work literally paving the way for the SunRunner buses is the installation of new pavement with clear markings that designate the lane being used for the service.

This lane is called a BAT (Bus And Turn) Lane, according to officials with the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, which has spearheaded the SunRunner program. These new lanes now sport with giant letters that emphasize the message, “BUS ONLY.” While changes continue on the affected roadways that will carry these express buses, motorists who still have to drive these roads are wondering what, if any, new restrictions will be in place for them. For example, one Gabber reader inquired as to whether a right turn from Pasadena Boulevard onto Gulfport Boulevard will be permissible – or even possible – under the new configuration.

A lack of information could produce a slew of traffic accidents, so it seems a quick look at the project is in order.

The New SunRunner Lanes are designated as “BAT” which means “bus and turn” – which are the only acceptable uses of the lane, other than for emergency vehicles.

An informational page on the PSTA website describes the BAT Lane as “a semi-dedicated lane that helps buses and other vehicles move more efficiently through traffic. These lanes, usually identified by red color, are expressly reserved for buses and turning vehicles to access homes, streets, and businesses along the route.”

The website also states that motorists can use the lane only for turning and can be in the lane for no more than one city block (although it is always available for emergency vehicles and evacuations).

Another change will impact cyclists. The City of St. Petersburg will move the bike lanes between Pasadena Avenue and 34th Street along 1st Avenue South to Central Avenue, according to the PSTA. Likewise, bike lanes on 1st Avenue North from

35th Street to Pasadena Avenue will move to Central Avenue.

As for fears that the new semi-dedicated lanes will cause more traffic congestion, PSTA officials maintain that the opposite is true since automobiles will not be hindered by the stop-and-go pattern of buses.

Also, turning at intersections and into driveways is potentially easier because the PSTA says BAT lanes will provide better visibility and opportunity for turns. Travel in the two remaining general-purpose lanes could also be faster since motorists will not be delayed by turning vehicles.

The plans appear to be in place.

As for how well they will work, or how well motorists will pay attention and respond to the changes?

That remains to be seen.

Thriving

Letters From Your Neighbor

In my column, “Fear Equals Vitriol” I spoke of the unwillingness to recognize consequences, and chronic narcissism in our population. So, here’s my theory on the two aforementioned topics.

An individual must understand one of the basic formulas of humankind and that formula is thriving.

Thrivers are not born; they’re made.

So, here are a few examples of what I mean by Thrivers: You need a safe, loving and structured childhood. You need autonomy, competence, and – most importantly – agency. These will, in turn, become thriving abilities: Mental toughness, resilience, social competence, and moral strength. With this idea of thriving, narcissism relents and there’s a recognition and understanding of what consequences are, be they good, bad, or indifferent.

So, how does one do this? How does one thrive?

Through self-confidence. In the outcomes of self-confidence, one creates solutions, one faces obstacles, one owns their efforts and one snaps back. The example would be fixing your child’s problems; the child is unaware of your efforts, unknowing of the obstacles, has no concept of the solution and when they fail in early adolescence or adulthood, they don’t snap back.

So, how does one thrive? Through empathy. My thoughts on this are that there are three types of empathy. Cognitive empathy is the un-

derstanding of others thoughts and experiences as being as real as your own. There is, certainly, behavioral empathy, which is concern that rallies us to act with compassion, and for certain, there is effective empathy which is sharing another’s feelings. Through these three empathetic types, one can label emotions, ask questions, share feelings and notice others, which also helps to defy narcissism.

So, how does one thrive? Through self-control, which is the ability to control your attention, emotions, thoughts, actions, and desires.

Again, this breaks down narcissism.

So, how does one thrive? Through integrity. Integrity is acts of learned beliefs, capacities, attitudes, and skills, which creates a moral compass and gives space to develop separate from family, parents, or a group. Integrity is where you are able to recognize consequences.

So, how does one thrive? Through curiosity. Curiosity is the recognition to pursue, and the desire to explore, novel, challenging, and uncertain events, which gives us the ability to recognize consequences.

So, how does one thrive? Through perseverance. Keeping on when everything else and everyone else has given up. This gives willingness to recognize consequences.

So, how does one thrive? Through optimism. To view challenges and obstacles as purely temporary. I believe that this will give way to rec-

ognize consequences, good, bad, or indifferent and lessens narcissism.

Could our Gulfport City Council members take into consideration these seven concepts of thriving? I believe that each member of council has the knowledge and the ability to create a thriving community. I know this exists within every neighbor in Gulfport. So, let us not regress into non-thriving individuals but progress into thriving ones.

Business Beat: Chefs Table, Laundry + Pizza The Local Scoop on Gulfport Business and Food News

Citing Gulfport restaurant staff shortages, the annual Chefs Table event in Gulfport canceled its 2022 event.

Since 2016, aside from 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 shutdowns, Gulfport restaurants have brought their fare to a long outdoor table on Gulfport’s Beach Boulevard. Organizer Pia Goff says the main players of the night simply didn’t have the help needed to host such a large event seamlessly.

“Of course, everyone is struggling right now, everyone is so tight with staff,” Goff said. “Everyone offers to volunteer but I can’t put people in my kitchen with no prior experience.”

Goff says some restaurants see up to 80 people at their tables, and each business provides its own staffing. Many restaurants also stay open while the event is happening.

O’Maddy’s Bar & Grille in Gulfport is one the larger tables of the night, and one of the first to express concern.

“So basically I pay two staffs, one running the restaurant and another set running Chef’s Table,” O’Maddy’s co-owner Joe Guenther said. He told The Gabber that he’s already 15 staff members short, most of which are kitchen staff.

“I think it’s a great event for Gulfport and I wouldn’t want to run it below our standards,” Guenther said.

Regardless, the laundry is open to the public while renovating.

St. John is also giving her laundry a makeover while she’s at it.

“The area we are renovating will be sports themed; there’s three TVs with three different sports stations playing,” St. John said. “Also, on the other side, we’re going to have a ‘Keep Gulfport Weird’ vibe.”

Co-owner Ting Chalfont says the restaurant couldn’t find reliable kitchen staff.

“A lot of customers were asking where we were,” Chalfont said.

Thankfully, they found the help they needed last Sunday, May 22, and reopened under normal hours.

Two-Legged Squirrel Celebrates Birthday with Squirrelly AF Fundraiser Last Sunday [May 29] wasn’t just any Sunday. Juice, a squirrel with two legs who lives with Squirrelly AF founder Jill Horstmann, celebrated the squirrel’s first birthday with a party at Pittsburgh Mix at 5304 66th St. N. in St. Petersburg.

The actual date of his birth may have been less than accurate, but the event doubled as a fundraiser for the St. Petersburg squirrel rescue.

“Juice slept most the day but when he woke he got his special birthday cake (avocado mush, coconut chips, and a pecan on a cracker),” Horstmann said. “Happy Birthday to my best little friend.”

Juice found his way around the bar while on a leash, and clutched Horstmann most of the evening. Two of his “special” squirrel friends, Twitch, who suffers from neurological issues, and Wheels, who has paralyzed back legs, attended the party.

The two-legged Juice had to have his hind legs amputated due to a runin with a tree trimmer in his adolescence. Horstmann says he navigates life without much issue.

Through raffles and collections, the birthday party raised $2,111 of the $2,000 goal. The money helps care

Kristen Arnett’s Latest, “With Teeth,” Delivers Gem of a Story

Kristen Arnett’s novel about the challenges of creating “a picture-perfect queer family” will make you cry, laugh, and possibly bellow like a tyrannosaurus.

“That was the thing about parents,” reflects protagonist Sammie Lucas in Kristen Arnett’s new novel, “With Teeth” (Riverhead Books, 2021). “They f****d you up royally even when they were trying their best.”

For Arnett’s fans, the flippant sincerity of this sentiment will come as no surprise – and neither will the fact that this thought occurs while Sammie is balancing on top of a chest, surrounded by piles of new clothes she has tried on and hated, waiting for her sullen teenage son to come and crush a cockroach she pathologically fears. Arnett’s debut novel “Mostly Dead Things” also explored survival in the embrace of a loving but dysfunctional family, and also included a generous dose of Florida wildlife (most of it taxidermied).

“With Teeth” follows Sammie through her relationships to her beautiful but distant wife, Monica, and her saturnine son, Samson, whose deeply buried feelings spill out in bizarre and violent ways.

From the novel’s opening scene, in which Sammie sprints across a playground to stop a young Samson from getting into a truck with a

stranger, Sammie’s journey is tinged with ragged, stomach-churning doubts: anxieties about parenting a difficult child; resentment at Monica’s growing emotional absence; the lingering pain of being rejected by her fundamentalist parents, who see her queerness as an abomination.

Vignettes told from the point of view of minor characters are interlaced through Sammie’s story and offer worrying evidence that Sammie’s self-doubt may be descending into a dangerous state of instability – a question which the novel’s

heart-stopping final chapters bring to light.

There is a deep, unrelenting sorrow in Arnett’s novel, but there are also moments so transcendently weird and so emotionally pitch-perfect that I found myself laughing out loud: The time that Sammie helps Samson create a “doll” version of himself for a school project and wakes in the middle of the night to find it creepily staring at her from the pillows; a sexting-gone-wrong incident in which Sammie sends a racy picture of herself not to her new girlfriend but, accidentally, to her estranged wife.

In the end, it’s no surprise that Arnett begins “With Teeth” with an epigraph from Flannery O’Connor, the notoriously strange Georgia author who once quipped that Southern writers tended to write about freaks “because we are still able to recognize one.” Sammie’s creeping sense of freakishness speaks to deep wells of loneliness and despair that lie beneath the surface of many lives.

Most of us are content to simply ignore or repress, but Arnett reaches in and pulls out a gem of a story.

freeFall Theatre’s latest results from a partnership with Sarasota-based Urbanite Theatre.

An usher guides me through the front porch and door of the set as if to invite me into the world of the play. I walk, skirting the edge of an old Edwardian house designed and crafted with great details. A wooded banister staircase leads to the second floor of the home. There’s a Tiffany-glassed window in the hallway, a faded blue wallpaper with a

white laced design and old wooden inlays, and black-and-white photos on the walls of family members long passed.

Jeff Weber’s scenic design puts the audience vividly in the atmosphere of the play. Or, as the younger character Remy says upon entering, “It looks like a grandma bomb went off in here.”

Public Art in Indian Shores Pays Homage to Tocobaga Indians

The Town of Indian Shores will unveil a 40-foot wide, $864,000 bronze-and-aluminum statue featuring a Tocobaga Indian family and Florida wildlife under a large arch in memorial of the pre-Euro Americans who lived in Tampa Bay. The piece of public art lives at the Pinellas County Tiki Gardens, 19583 Gulf Blvd., Indian Shores. It’s the design of artist Steve Graff and includes a Tocobaga timeline and self-guided video tour.

“Built as a plaza, it is intended to become a gathering place whereby residents and visitors may host events such as reenactments, drum circles, star gazing, kayak launches, etc.,” said Sarah Mullins,

Graff’s agent. Mullins is the CEO of Galleries On The Go, and connected the Town of Indian Shores with her client, Graff. The $864,000 statue is part of the Gulf Boulevard Beautification Project, funded by the Penny for Pinellas tax.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida can trace its ancestors to the Tocobaga, as well as other Indians who lived in Florida.

St. Pete Pride is more than a parade, but a month-long itinerary of parties, art receptions, gay-icon hosted events, and more. Deciding how to celebrate can feel daunting, but The Gabber has you covered with a list of Pride events in St. Pete (and Gulfport!) this June.

Saturday, June 4 Gulfport Pride The second annual Gulfport Florida Pride, not to be confused with Gulfport’s Peace, Love and Pride Festival that took place earlier this year, comes to Gulfport’s downtown for a day-long festival full of rainbow celebrations and LGBTQ+-friendly vendors. The Gulfport Public Library will debut its ArtOut exhibit, comprised entirely of work from LGBTQ+ artists and allies. Plus, the Gecko Amalgamated Marching Band will make an appearance, and Gulfport’s downtown and waterfront businesses will come alive with rainbow flags. This is a fundraiser for the LGBTQ Resource Center.
