There are no community guideline censors or risks of censorship at an art show. That’s the entire idea of EROTIX, a one-night only erotic art and dance exhibit.

Partners in life, and art, Sheba Queen of the Night (a Gulfport burlesque performer) and Gulfport artist Zachary Knight have assembled a pop-up exhibit featuring eroticism and the nude human form: EROTIX. The artists are hosting the exhibit through their collaborative production company, KNightLife Arts. Metro Health is partnering with EROTIX and bringing a mobile testing truck and a condom fashion show to Saturday’s exhibit.

That’s a fashion show showcasing garb and gowns made entirely from condoms. It’s all part of normalizing sex, the artists explain.

“There’s just not enough avenues to normalize sexuality in art; it’s either romanticized or it’s taboo,” Knight said.

“Even just the word ‘erotic’ can be flagged online,” Sheba added. “We want to create an environment for the artists who don’t have a lot of outlets to show their art like this.”

In the midst of supply chain issues, the lowest employment since the turn of the millennium, and a post-or-maybe-not-so-post-COVID-19 fog, we can all use a burst of love – especially our Gulfport and South Pinellas businesses who have powered through the past two-plus years. In The Gabber offices, we have a few places we love. We’re not getting any money for this; we simply thought it’d be nice to put some positivity back into the Universe.

Features reporter Abby Baker loves the Blueberry Patch because she’s into funky live music venues and loves that we have one in Gulfport.

“Compared to spots in downtown, it has a grassroots feel,” she says “and volunteers grill veggie burgers (actually good veggie burgers) during events.”

News and politics reporter Monroe Roark loves the crab pizza at Brass Monkey and the view of the water from the Hurricane. Operations manager Patrick Graney loves the wine at CellarMasters, and designer Joey Neill heads to the Big Catch something like three times a week (and after knowing him for six years I learned he’s a hockey fan.) This is the part of the office discussion about our favorite spots where Monroe mentioned he loves it there, too. Joey’s no stranger to the pizza and burgers at O’Maddy’s, but Monroe’s holding out for the return of the spinach and crab dip (Joe Guenther, let us know when it’s back!)

Barry and I spend a lot of time – and our money – at PJ’s Oyster Bar on St. Pete Beach; in the past 13 years, we’ve probably eaten our weight in clams, oysters, and crab there. Half the staff swears that Mullet’s Fish Camp makes the best chicken wings we’ve ever tasted (and we’re working on those who don’t.) Our bookkeeper, Nicole Spence, and I head to O’Bistro (excuse me, O’Bistro & Pierogi Bar) on a regular-enough basis that the servers know us.

Service-wise, my friend Nicole and her Clear Numbers Bookkeeping (if you have a small business, we highly recommend letting her handle your bookkeeping) has removed a great deal of stress from our lives. We also love Nature’s Safeway Pest Control (pet-safe pest control!), and, of course, the City of Gulfport’s entire public works department, led by Tom Nicholls. It’s not often neighbors chat about how much they love the trash collection, but that’s a conversation I’ve had with a neighbor.

Duke Energy Will Take Some Gulfport Power Lines Underground This Summer

Duke Energy looked at eight feeder lines running from the 51st Street Substation to parts of Gulfport and St. Petersburg to determine which areas most needed underground power lines.

Gulfport officials received an update recently on a plan to move a considerable amount of existing utility infrastructure underground.

Duke Energy representatives reviewed planned grid improvements at the Gulfport City Council’s May 17 regular meeting. Not all residents in the city will be affected, but those identified as outage-prone get top priority. Relocating utilities underground makes them more resistant to storm-related outages, as well as cyberattacks, officials told Council.

Studying eight feeder lines from the 51st Street substation, which serves most of Gulfport and a portion of St. Petersburg, officials have identified where they think the work needs to be done. With the evaluation phase of the project complete, the utility is now in the process of obtaining easements in the affected areas.

These easements are in front of homes, unlike most of the current infrastructure that is in the back of the lots. Maintenance will be easier

and less intrusive in front, officials said, whereas many current locations have vegetation that hinders repair work and at times workers have to knock on a homeowner’s door in the middle of the night to get access to the property.

Once Duke Energy can access the easements, the process includes plan review, marking each site, relocation of the lines, and restoration of the site. Running lines from the

right-of-way to the meter will not require Duke Energy to trench any yards, according to utility rep Libby Hoctor.

“We take pride in leaving the community the way we found it,” she told the council.

Occasionally the relocation work will require a resident’s meter, which is attached to the house, to be moved as well. Duke Energy will pay up to $1,500 for that relocation, and Hoctor said she has never heard of a homeowner having to subsidize that cost during her time working with projects like this.

Affected residents received a postcard about this last fall and later received follow-up correspondence about specific plans for their individual properties. Each postcard contained a QR code directing residents to a website with regular updates. Duke Energy will do a survey after the work is completed.

The power company has already started some overhead improvements in Gulfport. Hoctor said she didn’t expect the underground work to begin until August; the work should take about four months.

Customers will have no out-ofpocket costs stemming from this project, and Duke Energy rep Theresa Crane said Duke Energy will not seek any sort of rate adjustment for several years.

talked to Scott Mahurin, president of Florida Preborn Rescue. Both groups are 501(c)(3) organizations; Charity Navigator lists the Common Ground Florida Project as a community coalition and Florida Preborn Rescue as adult, continuing education.

On its website, Florida Preborn Rescue says it focuses on “Christ-centered, on-site sidewalk counseling at local abortion clinics.” Common Ground Florida’s website says its goal is “to engage, educate, and build grassroots power at the local level.”

Scott’s Stance

Lisa Perry is a women’s rights activist, director of the voter education nonprofit Common Ground Florida Project, and an organizer of abortion-rights rallies in Florida and Washington.

Women in America have been able to get legal, medically safe abortions for almost 50 years, since the 1973 Roe. v. Wade Supreme Court decision that protected a woman’s right to have an abortion.

This year, a leaked draft majority opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court suggests the court could change that, giving the right to restrict or allow abortion to individual states.

That, paired with the 15-week abortion ban Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed this April, leaves some Floridians unsure what the possible change in women’s healthcare will mean for them.

The Gabber Newspaper talked to activists on both sides of the abortion debate. We talked to Lisa Perry, a St. Petersburg resident who serves as the Executive Director of the Common Ground Florida Project, based in Melbourne. We also

Since 2017, Mahurin’s full-time job is to stand outside women health facilities and offer abortion alternatives to the women entering.

“I offer help to the women going inside to get abortions. I offer other options, places to live, other people to talk to, programs that offer financial assistance,” Mahurin said. “A lot of women struggle with the decision and it doesn’t have to end this way.”

In addition to providing resources to women through donations, Florida Preborn Rescue aims to connect women “in crisis” to programs that provide aid, both monetary and mentally.

Above all, Mahurin views unborn fetuses as life, and abortion as ending a person’s life.

“I think people should understand we’re peaceful. I hand out brochures and say ‘I’m here to help you’,” Mahurin told The Gabber. “I never yell.” He also adds that even standing outside sometimes deters women from entering, a feat he sees as possibly saving an unborn life.

“The facilities don’t like us there, because it often prevents women from wanting to walk past us,” Mahurin said.

may not see a total or even highly restrictive abortion ban.

“I don’t think Florida will be in a huge hurry to do a total ban on abortion,” Mahurin said. “I don’t have confidence in that.”

He and others affiliated with his nonprofit will continue their task of preventing abortions until that happens. He says he knows of 23 women who confirmed they reversed their medical decision based on his organization.

We asked him about pregnancies that result from sexual abuse.

“If the baby is a product of rape or incest, does that justify ending a life?” Mahurin said.

Lisa’s Stance Perry, a pro-choice activist, knows the effect abortion bans will have on American women firsthand. She herself underwent an abortion due to a critical medical emergency.

“The perspective of ending a life … these women’s lives already exist,” Perry said. “End this form of healthcare and it will effect women’s lives; women will die with the removal of access to health care.”

After the 2016 election, when Republican president Donald Trump was sworn into office, Perry jumped into political action. She helped organize a march in Washington and led a group of local women to the

Her organization, Common Ground Florida Project aims to connect everyday people with voter information and access to the ballots.

“A women’s right to healthcare is a personal choice; a person’s health should drive those decisions,” Perry told The Gabber. “I have respect

for the individuals who are pro-life, but the argument does not take into consideration rape, incest, [or] minors. We have room to disagree, but no room to endanger women’s lives.”

Perry urges voters to stand up for women’s rights and vote.

‘I will fight this fight every day,” Perry said. “These are women’s rights on the ballot.”

The Golden Mangrove Award

Gulfport’s Rain Garden Wins Award from Tampa Bay Estuary Program A community garden project in Gulfport has been recognized for its excellence by a regional organization which helped fund it.

Participants in the Gulfport Sustainability Committee who came together to create a rain garden outside the Gulfport Recreation Center learned in early May the garden received the 2020 Golden Mangrove Award from the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, who presents the award to “the most outstanding Bay Mini-Grant project in each grant cycle.” The winners will accept the award in person May 27 at the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, where they’ll provide a brief overview of the project.

“The Golden Mangrove Subcommittee, which is made up of Community Advisory Committee members, felt that your project encapsulated the true mission of the Bay Mini-Grant program – a grassroots community organization with a commitment to protect Tampa Bay coming together to successfully complete a small project,” a TBEP official stated. “The review committee felt there is no organization more deserving than the Gulfport Sustainability Committee to receive the award.”

“Dana took the lead. This had been her idea to start with,” said Thanos.

“I knew that she knew about this stuff, and even though she doesn’t live in Gulfport she volunteered to help. She knew what she was doing.”

tion of various plants that would form the garden. Some of the group came from as far as Safety Harbor to take part, Thanos said, and members of the Native Plant Society pitched in because they liked the project.

Of course, some maintenance was required after the initial installation.

“We had a team that kept it watered and then we had some weeding parties to make sure it was tidy,” said Thanos. “Then we lost some plants and had to have a replanting party.”

Parkinson said the Tampa Bay Estuary Program awarded a $2,432.22 grant and the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council provided $1,500. That latter award was earmarked solely for outreach and educational purposes, so the money was used to create large, high-quality, weatherproof signage to educate the public and some smaller metal signs to identify some of the plants. The former grant covered the supplies and materials needed to get the work done.

“This project has been incredible to work on from start to finish, from an idea that came up in a conversation to seeing everyone come together to make it happen,” said Parkinson. “It was really exciting to work on.”

A Sewage Fix for Christmas

After 2016 Sewage Spills, Gulfport Faces Holiday Deadline to Fix Problems Dirt is flying at the corner of 58th Street and Shore Boulevard in front of the Gulfport Recreation Center as a lift station gets a major overhaul. The deadline for completing the project is Christmas, according to Gulfport’s public works director Tom Nicholls. City workers are about at the halfway point of the project.

This work was mandated as a result of litigation after some sewer spills in 2016, Nicholls said, calling it a “bypass project” that will somewhat change the way sewage gets moved out of Gulfport.

In the past, this lift station has pumped the sewage from the southwest part of the city to the other lift station by the marina, and from there to St. Petersburg.

“It is kind of redundant,” said Nicholls. “Right now it’s a gravity system. It pumps it a certain distance and then goes by gravity and

runs into lift station one. When you have heavy rains and get all that extra water in the system, it’s not moving, so it can get backed up.”

This $3 million project will eliminate the problem, with a force main and all new pumps slated for installation.

Work started in January, as the City of Gulfport had a delay of almost one year while waiting for the pumps and generators to arrive.

“We had two years which we thought was plenty of time,” said Nicholls. “Under the consent decree we have to be done by Christmas.”

A Big Harvest From a Little Pond

Every Saturday, Organic Bushnell Farm Brings Harvest to Downtown St. Pete For some Tampa Bay residents, Saturday is the only day to buy produce.

Little Pond Farm, an USDA-certified organic farm in Bushnell, brings a truck filled with fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers each week to the Saturday Morning Market in downtown St. Petersburg.

The operation is manned by married couple and co-owners Cole and Ellen Turner. Cole, a farmer, and Ellen, a biologist who previously worked in the genetics lab of the American Museum of Natural History work the land and provide regular organic hauls to Pinellas.

“Our mission is to be accessible and affordable,” Turner said. “We do that by being here every Saturday, rain or shine.”

Little Pond is a five-acre farm on 26 acres of Ellen’s family property.

It’s old Florida, full of swamps, prairie, and woodland, but the couple both grew up in the Tampa Bay area. They moved to Bushnell (population 3,200) in 2013 to grow their farm.

In nine years (and nine growing seasons), they’ve graduated to harvesting 60 types of vegetables and hundreds of flower species using no pesticides or chemicals, a challenge in Florida.

How do they manage to grow for the Saturday Morning Market demand with only a small crew of workers?

“In Florida, it’s very difficult,” Turner said.

The Turners use integrative pest management techniques, such as crop rotation, planting flowering plants to draw in pollinators, inter-planting and old-fashioned preventative maintenance – or, as they

say, “staying on top of things before they become a problem.”

Ellen manages the pests on the farm, often from the lab.

“When you get a fungus inside the plant, inside every cell, there’s nothing organic you can spray on that,” Ellen said. “And we wouldn’t want to spray anything that’s able to penetrate the cell.”

It’s all about prevention, she adds.

“We’re a really small farm and every moment we have at the farm is crucial,” Ellen told The Gabber.

They are constantly adjusting the way they plant their crops, and if they lose one type of vegetable, they have 59 more for the market, which is important, considering their customers invest in the har-

Customers pay with a prepaid farm card. People load the card with funds, starting at $400, the summer before the season. Little Pond adds a 10%-12% spending credit to the card, meaning members who load $400 on their card have at least $440 to spend. Members use the card to buy produce offerings at the Saturday Morning Market throughout the season.

“People invest in the farm and then reap the benefit after harvest,” Turner said.

With the exception of a few community events, Little Pond does not open the farm itself – it’s also the Turner’s private home.

The couple, who met at Sweetwater Organic Community Farm, originally lived in a barn apartment on the property. They moved to a home nearby after the birth of their daughter, who is now 18 months old.

“She loves vegetables,” Turner laughed.

Ed Deagle’s bringing his enthusiasm for diving and the water to Gulfport with his dive shop, Black Jack Tech Diving. The shop will open at 5708 Gulfport Blvd. S.; Deagle told The Gabber it will be a full-service shop, offering repairs, training, and dive trips throughout Florida.

He hopes the opening date will land on July 4.

Deagle moved to Florida from North Carolina in 2017 to work at MacDill Air Force Base and finish his military career. Upon retiring this January, he moved to Gulfport with dreams of opening a full-service shop.

“I fell in love with Gulfport,” Deagle said. “Bought a building on Gulfport Boulevard, and that was it. This is what I hope to be doing for a long time.”

Crew will bring divers on trips to the underwater cave system in Central Florida, the reefs and wrecks near Key West, and other watery dive zones in the Sunshine State.

He’ll teach out of local pools – a common practice (few local dive shops in South Pinellas have their own pool.)

“Once I got in the water with the tanks and I could sit in the bottom of the pool, that was it for me,” Deagle said.

Let’s Get Physical Cardio Sport was a gym only in Massachusetts, until Melissa Gwinn opened the first franchise in St. Pete.

On June 1, Cardio Sport, an athletic center specializing in workout classes, personal training and sports team training opened at 3950 Central Ave. The gym offers no open workout hours, only classes and training.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Gwinn said.

Fans of O’Bistro can rest easy. Despite rumors of closing, the restaurant at 6661 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg will still serve Mediterranean and American fare, but it’s added Pierogi Bar to the mix.

Pierogi Bar, a Ukrainian restaurant specializing in, well, pierogies, is owned by Daryna Voloshyn and is serving up authentic Ukrainian dishes to St. Pete.

“O’Bistro is not closing. However, we are under new ownership and will become a Ukrainian-influenced restaurant,” O’Bistro wrote in a message to The Gabber Newspaper.

“Hopefully we will be able to keep some of our house specialties that our amazing regulars have been enjoying for years. But now if you’re looking for pierogies, O’Bistro has you covered!”

The original O’Bistro menu will stay the same for now, but there will be some pierogi-ish additions.

Juice Vendor Injured At – and Won’t Return to – Gulfport Market Car Backs Over Juice Vendor Tent, Injuring Her and Destroying Merchandise

Gianna Fiola, owner of Gaia Compassion says her wrist was hurt in the Tuesday Fresh Market collision on May 17.

Despite Gulfport Police telling The Gabber that no one was injured after a woman backed her car through a Tuesday Fresh Market tent and into a Beach Boulevard salon, vendor Gianna Fiola said she hurt her wrist in the altercation on May 17.

Tina Losinger, 59, backed her Kia Optima into a diagonal parking space and ran into 24-year-old Fiola’s juice stand, Gaia Compassion, and then the front of Beauty Cafe Gulfport on Beach Boulevard South.

“I’m not sure what hit my wrist,” Fiola told The Gabber following the event. “I think it may have been her side view mirror. It was all so quick and loud and crazy I don’t even know.

It was like a tornado came and took out everything except me sitting on my cooler.”

Juanis Brasser, owner of Beauty Cafe said her staff and customers were safe despite the Kia Optima striking a railing, hitting a window, and shattering glass.

Losinger reportedly told Gulfport Police her shoe or foot caught the gas pedal. The salon owner’s said the driver’s insurance will pay for the

damages to Brasser’s Gulfport salon.

“I think it should be emphasized that they almost killed a vendor, destroyed my entire setup and missed me by only six inches and I am injured, which will put me out of work until my wrist is healed,” Fiola said, who added she will not be able to return to making juice for at least two weeks due to her injuries.

ance through R.W. Caldwell Realty & Insurance. Vendors must carry liability insurance for their products, which Fiola said she has. If the accident was at the fault of the GMC, then its insurance would pay for the damages.

In this case, the vendor and the driver will each put a claim in with their own insurance policies, according to both Helmbold and Fiola.

The juice vendor added she believed the City should find a solution regarding cars during the Tuesday Fresh Market, a weekly outdoor market where vendors set up tents on Beach Boulevard sidewalks.

“Someone shouldn’t have to almost die, or potentially die in the future for them to make logical safety choices.

Some kind of balance has to come. I think half the street is closed, especially in summer, we can mush all of the vendors together half the length and they will have to walk a short distance,” Fiola said.

Some comments on The Gabber’s Facebook post following Tuesday’s accident agreed with the juice vendor’s sentiment.

“Would be so much nicer with no cars on Beach [Boulevard],” Bryan Hilbert wrote.

“There’s plenty of parking at beach and on side streets,” Michele Redshaw posted. “There’s also trolleys. I believe the market would expand and draw a more diverse crowd.”

Fiola told The Gabber that, after this incident, she will never return to the Gulfport Tuesday Market.

Coastal Creative, a warehouse-style art gallery and show space will be the canvas for EROTIX’s photography and art gallery, but the center show will feature dance, burlesque, sexy performances, tarot readings, and sex-positive vendors all night long.

For those who prefer to keep sexual themes behind closed doors, the artists have a word of advice; steer clear of Coastal on May 28.

“It’s your choice to enter the space, it’s not a public exhibit on the sidewalk,” Knight said. “The more

things we do like this, the more the public sees how encouraging the community is of things previously seen as taboo.”

If you haven’t gathered, there will be heavy nudity at the pop-up. The Gulfport curators urge attendees to wear costumes if they’re comfortable; It’s a safe space, after all. “We hope people show up and express their own version of sexuality,” Sheba told The Gabber.

This won’t be Sheba and Knight’s first or last erotic art exhibit in St. Pete. The collaborative artists are known for purgARTory, a creepy burlesque show that premiered October, 2021. They’re bringing the dark arts dance back to Coastal on October 22, 2022.

For the first time in 10 years, the Beach Theatre is holding a film screening, but it won’t be inside the blue building on Corey Avenue in St. Pete Beach.

Starting June 1, the Beach Theatre will unveil the new summer series, “JUDY AT 100.” It’s comprised of four outdoor screenings of films featuring Judy Garland on the first four Wednesdays in June in Horan Park. The series isn’t just a historical event for the theater, it’s a celebration of what would have been Garland’s 100th birthday.

Why Garland?

“I think she [Judy Garland] has this appeal that she is adored, and regarded as the greatest entertainer of her time,” said Joey Hager, Director of Operations & Programming at the Beach Theatre. “Between folks on the beach, St. Pete, and Tampa, she has that widespread appeal that gets people interested.”

Garland (1922-1969) is known for her career as an actress and singer, and the later unearthed story of the child abuse and drug addiction she was put through as a young star. She’s remembered today as a talented performer with a tragic tale, and Hager hopes to celebrate her career with a series serving as a homage to her time in Hollywood.

The Beach Theater is showing its first film series in 10 years, “JUDY AT 100” in Horan Park this Summer. The star of the series? Judy Garland.

“When I hung the summer series posters up, I remembered all those years I wished it was open,” Hager said. “It’s an honor to breathe a little life into this place.”

Staff hopes the Beach Theatre will reopen by the end of the year, but a clear timeline is still up in the air.

The summer series is a collaboration by the theater and the City of St. Pete Beach. The shuttered movie theater is still under heavy renovation, but the Horan Park series will serve as a chance to raise funds. The films themselves may be free, but donations are much appreciated – and greatly needed.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done; we’re really hoping for a donor,” Hager said. “These kinds of projects are great, but they are small potatoes at the end of the day. We’re hoping to find a donor to step in.”

Once opened, the theater will show vintage films, documentaries and indie flicks rather than block busters.

“I think that’s what the community wants to see, and we’re going to give the community what they want,” Hager told The Gabber.

An estimated crowd of 2,000 attended the Floridania Fest held this past Saturday (May 21) at the Gulfport Casino. That’s according to event organizer Ken Breslauer.

David Alexander, a collectibles dealer based in Tampa, was one of the vendors offering printed Sunshine State memorabilia. In this picture, he showcases a 1926 poster from the Norman Studios in Jacksonville. This studio, once as familiar as those in Hollywood, was known for filming Black actors.
