The new space at the Brenda McMahon Gallery encourages everyone to see local art.

When Brenda McMahon moved to Gulfport in 2007, she fell in love with the artistic community. She quickly noticed how, despite the number of artists who call the city home, there was a lack of studio spaces. In 2019, she did her part to change that. For

the last five years, McMahon’s gallery on Beach Boulevard housed Tampa Bay and Gulfport art, along with her own. On May 3, she celebrated the anniversary of her gallery’s opening, by expanding into the adjacent building.

Open Letter From the Mayor to St. Petersburg Residents

Mayor Ken Welch’s response to Faith and Action for Strength Together (FAST) open letter published last month addresses St. Pete housing initiatives.

To the residents of the City of St. Petersburg: The issue of Affordable Housing has long been my priority as an elected official. On March 21, 2024, Faith and Action for Strength Together (FAST) published an open letter in The Weekly Challenger that ignores my nearly two decades of intentional partnership with FAST and our current state-leading success in developing and preserving affordable housing for those making below-average incomes.

FAST’s letter also questions the importance of housing to my administration. On the contrary, affordable housing has long been an established priority of mine, and working with FAST and others, we have achieved unprecedented levels of local funding and supportive policies.

frankly deceptive and patently false.

It’s especially disappointing when people of “faith,” who have worked with me and other leaders to successfully implement well over $100 million in local affordable housing funding and policies at the county and city levels, are so comfortable making such misleading statements.

But this is not a new phenomenon. Over the past 18 years, I have had several heart-to-heart conversations with Pastor Robert Ward and other FAST leaders regarding the unproductive nature of this approach, which demeans even the most committed elected officials, never rewards success, nor builds partnerships.

I have urged FAST to work collaboratively with elected officials who have shown a commitment – and results – on those issues of mutual concern. My administration is focused on our Governing Principle of Community Impact, and I’ve kept

At the State of the City address in January, Mayor Ken Welch shared the city’s 2023 Progress Report and provided an extensive update on the “Housing Opportunities for All” Pillar.

my word on impactful issues like the South St. Pete CRA, the Housing Trust Fund and Penny for Pinellas affordable housing funding.

These funding sources, when leveraged with public and private sector investments, have led to the development, creation, and preservation of more than 10,000 affordable and workforce housing units in our community. Under my chairmanship, the county created the Affordable Housing Trust Fund with $19 million in local funding – a first for our county.

Funding was added through the Penny for Pinellas, including $83 million in 2017 – again, working with FAST to secure that funding. And as mayor, we have increased our 2030 housing goals by more than 1,000 units and dedicated more than $50 million in American Rescue Plan Act, South St. Pete CRA, and other funding to support our Housing Opportunities for All Plan. We’ve also

supported several programs to help citizens with home repair, rental assistance, utility assistance, and firsttime homeowner programs. The list of our housing programs and funding is extensive, reflecting the real work that we’re doing every day.

The Focus on Affordability Since taking office as mayor, members of FAST have approached me individually and collectively to discuss affordable housing in St. Pete with FAST’s specific concern “to make affordable housing a priority for those in our community making 80 percent AMI or less ($48,000/single adult, $69,000/ family of four).”

Many FAST members have spoken with me at our City Hall on Tour stops held around the community and at various citywide events.

During those conversations, I reminded several of them that they

should be aware that we’ve focused on 80 percent AMI since the inception of the Housing Trust Fund in 2006 and that they have been provided reports on several occasions – including recently – showing the emphasis on the development of 80 percent AMI (and lower income) housing under the city’s current plan. To date, 96 percent of the housing completed with city support in the last two years has been for those earning 80 percent AMI and below.

The Meeting Last December, FAST notified me about their April 30 Nehemiah Action meeting. I personally relayed to Rev. Ward that I would consider it, but before the Nehemiah Action, I requested to meet with FAST’s housing committee members for a collaborative conversation on what new, innovative methods we could

partner on with FAST’s member organizations to increase our affordable housing goals and production.

The group again turned down the opportunity, demanding that we meet with a large group in one of their houses of worship and attend the Nehemiah Action.

The Invitation to Collaborate No one entity can affect meaningful change, especially in the affordable housing space. Reaching or exceeding 100 percent of our housing goals will only be possible through the strong public-private partnerships that the city enjoys with the county, developers, banks, and other community stakeholders.

Faith communities can play an important role in the development of affordable housing as well. Not just by reminding those in elected office of our moral obligation to serve those with average or lower incomes, but in the actual work — the physical development of this much-needed housing. As a person of faith myself, I cherish the scripture that reminds us that “faith without works is of little impact” (“dead” in the KJV).

Faith-Based Housing Initiative We can take steps to have a more significant impact in collaboration

with our faith communities. The following is a model that I hoped to discuss with the FAST housing leaders, but since multiple requests to meet were not accepted, I will present it here: When the Florida Legislature reconvenes, I will be asking for the consideration of legislation to empower faith communities to develop affordable housing on their own property, also known as Yes In God’s Backyard or YIGBY legislation. I will also continue that advocacy at the federal level, endorsing the passage of the Yes in God’s Backyard Act, sponsored by Sen. Sherrod Brown, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

Here in St. Petersburg, I invite FAST and all faith organizations to partner with the city to develop a Faith-Based Housing Initiative, with the goal of identifying land and/or properties that the faith community can devote to the cause of increasing the number of affordable housing units available in our community.

The city has experienced recent success with this model through the vision of Pastor Oscar Banks and Palm Lake Christian Church. Pastor Banks, who has spoken on FAST’s behalf at city council, has partnered with Norstar developers to utilize church land to develop affordable housing. The city anticipates con-

tributing financially to this project.

Our housing team is also exploring a similar scenario with First United Methodist downtown. This model can indeed be replicated, given the large amounts of land and properties that FAST and other faith-based organizations (FBOs) own.

This approach is gaining traction in communities across our nation.

By leveraging unused or underutilized church properties to develop affordable housing, FBOs can do more to actively address the critical shortage of affordable housing that they rightly advocate for. This initiative advocates for and directly supports the development of stable, affordable housing. By uniting with local governments, FBOs can navigate zoning regulations and funding opportunities more effectively, creating a sustainable model that benefits our entire community.

My administration has an opendoor policy, focusing on progress in this critical area. Again, I urge FAST to consider meeting to discuss this proposal. It has true potential! In the meantime, we will continue looking for ways to meet and hopefully exceed our affordable and workforce housing goals for St. Petersburg.

It is now, and will always be, a priority for my administration. We will continue to fulfill that commitment through our work.

In St. Petersburg, the City Council passes laws and approves the budget. The mayor ensures that laws are observed and goals are achieved.

The Pinellas County courts interpret laws and oversee their application.

What Does that Look Like at a Local Level?

St. Pete seems to be an outlier in Pinellas County. You won’t find a strong-mayor form of government in Kenneth City, Clearwater, Gulfport, or most municipalities.

Instead, you will run into a council-manager form of government.

Understanding the differences between these forms of government can prove helpful when navigating the intricacies of the political and bureaucratic systems in our corner of Florida.

Many cities in Pinellas County use a city or town manager form of government. Although it’s common, many residents don’t know what this means.

Megan Zemaitis, the newly elected mayor of Kenneth City, took immediate action by firing the town manager, Lacy LaFave, upon being sworn in. This decision was significant because it stripped the town’s executive power from LaFave, and the Council had to assign someone else to temporarily fill the position.

Zemaitis was able to terminate the Kenneth City town manager only with the majority of the town council voting in favor of dismissing LaFave.

How did this happen? It has everything to do with the way Kenneth City’s form of government works.

Context for St. Petersburg Residents St. Petersburg uses a strong-mayor form of government where the mayor holds executive power and makes decisions based on the proposed budgets.

A government has multiple functions: •Creating and amending laws •Executing those laws •Interpreting the laws The United States follows the principle of separation of power, which means that the legislative branch (represented by Congress) creates and amends laws; it also approves budgets. The judicial branch (represented by the courts) interprets these laws, and these are executed by the executive power, led by

“In 1995, a grand jury investigated the Kenneth City Police Department after allegations of ticket-fixing and harassment,” an article by Jack Evans in the Tampa Bay Times reads.

“Though nobody was charged, it had a forceful recommendation: Hire a town manager.”

Kenneth City has had multiple town managers. LaFave is just one of the multiple managers who have worked in the small town north of Gulfport.

In the council-manager form of government, things are different from the form of government seen in St. Petersburg.

What Does a Manager Do in a Council-manager Form of Government?

In a town like Kenneth City, or a city like Gulfport, what does a city manager do?

According to The International City/County Management Association (ICMA), the Town or City Council chooses a manager. These officials can also be terminated by the council, just like what happened in Kenneth City.

The Town or City managers are responsible for drafting a budget and proposing it to the council for approval. They assign roles to employees.

Most importantly, managers are responsible for “implementing and enforcing council policies and legislative initiatives.”

The council-manager form assigns the Town or City council as the governing body. They oversee the work of the town manager by approving the proposed budget.

The role of a mayor in the council-manager form of government can

differ, depending on the city.

For instance, in Kenneth City, the mayor is a part of the council. Also, the mayor is a public and elected official, just as ICMA describes.

The mayor is typically the chair of the council meetings and oversees the public proceedings, ensuring effective governance and a harmonious relationship between the administration and the council members.

Gulfport’s First OUTie Awards GAYLA Gulfportians often hail the city as an accepting and open-minded community. Many in the city see this as why Gulfport’s the perfect city to host events celebrating the large LGBTQ+ community. Award winning drag performer Brianna Summers and DJ Lucy Blu host the inaugural OUTie awards on the night of May 31. From 7-10 p.m., the Gulfport Casino will be filled with “dancing, elegant deserts, and appreciation,” the press release reads.

“The OUTies recognize those that have been integral to our evolution from a 250-volume book collection at the Gulfport Library into OUT Arts & Culture,” said Board President Paul Raker. He also spoke about the unique goals of the nonprofit.

Although the board selected the award winners, Raker hopes the community has a hand in the future winners.

“We’re here to support the community, but the community supports us and each other,” said Raker. “They know the most about who deserves the honor, and we want to listen to them.”

Future For OUT Arts & Culture The Gayla previews a month of Pride celebrations in the city, including the official Gulfport Pride celebration on June 1. Along with this, OUT Arts & Culture begins their ARTout exhibit at the Gulfport Library on the same day.

In late 2023, controversy arose surrounding who is running the Gulfport Pride celebration. Despite this, Raker looks to the future.

“The importance of coming together is our top priority,” said Raker. “Our community is marginalized enough from the outside. We’re forward looking and we need to collaborate and work together with our community, and the people who support us. I’m hoping for a fresh start and building new relationships.”

How To Prepare for Hurricane Season in Gulfport

The last step is to make sure communication is possible, either via cell-phone or other methods.

The most important aspect they stress is to have a plan. This includes signing up for emergency notifications, knowing about evacuation and flooding, having a hurricane kit, and understanding your level of risk.

Hurricane season runs June 1 through Nov. 30, although in recent years, outlying storms have popped up in Florida on either side of the official season. Throughout the season, Pinellas County and many coastal Pinellas cities provide residents with the chance to fill sandbags, which can help stop some flooding. Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis The moment I parked my car and stepped onto the property, I felt immersed in serenity. A sidewalk curved through green grasses alongside tennis courts, backdropped by the pristine waters of the bay.

The occasional woosh of a tennis ball beckoned me to the courts.

Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis is a public recreation facility with a feeling of privacy and absolute calm.

The City of Treasure Island owns the facility, which allows anyone to visit. People can rent a tennis or pickleball court. They can play nine holes on the waterfront executive golf course, or try a game of shuffleboard. Kids can also visit the pirate-themed playground. The recreation facility has a picnic area with a charcoal grill and a Gulf Beaches library lending machine in the clubhouse.

Phil Girardi is the head coach for the St. Pete College Women’s Tennis team. The team recently flew to Texas for the nationals tournament.

I caught up with Phil Girardi, the director of tennis at Treasure Bay, for a tour of the facility. Originally from New York, Girardi moved to Ruskin when he was a boy. He moved to Treasure Island more than 20 years ago.

As a skilled player and coach, Girardi gave tennis tips to friends and family. These lessons blossomed into a full-time career.

His clients grow alongside him.

“Whenever I host clinics and I see people stop practicing and collectively stare out at the water, I know I’ve lost them,” Girardi said.

No matter the passion for tennis,

transplants and native Floridians alike cannot help but pause in awe at the surrounding beauty.

He means business though. He said he’s excited that the sport of tennis is in a Renaissance. Since the pandemic nudged people to go outdoors, more people showed interest in sports like tennis.

Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis hosts various tennis workshops and classes. Many people create new friendships and grow their social circles. People post their information on the facility’s community board in search of a partner to play with.

Girardi coached at Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis for so long that now he proudly watches some of his athletes compete at the professional level. Girardi even coaches some of the kids of parents he coached decades ago.

Every year, thousands of sea turtles make their way onto Florida beaches to lay their eggs. This process is long, and leaves the turtle vulnerable. If a turtle is disturbed, it abandons its clutch, meaning more than a hundred hatchlings won’t survive. With all sea turtle species listed as endangered, this is detrimental to the overall populations. Residents on the beach hold the responsibility of making sure these animals are able to safely nest, and grow their populations.

These turtles need darkness to stay safe, but businesses and beachgoers often neglect this.

“At night, we encourage people not to use flashlights. The moon gives plenty of light anyways,” said Reich. “If you absolutely need a flashlight, don’t use a white light; use a red light. Businesses and houses should close their shades at night too.”

Reich continued to stress the importance of distance.

“Stay away from the nesting females. Many people want to help the hatchlings make it to the water, but they need to crawl so they can imprint on the beach,” said Reich. “Stay out of the nesting mother’s line of sight, as it can startle her. We’ve seen many instances where we can see their tracks, see the hole they dug, but find no eggs because she was startled. That is completely avoidable.

If someone is breaking these guidelines, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, or your local non-emergency line to deal with it.”

Future for the Beach Reich’s group works not only for sea turtles, but all wildlife that calls the beach home.

“I feel like progress is being made,” said Reich. “The City approved me to introduce the beach ambassador to be a friendly face on the beach to educate the public and businesses on the beach. It isn’t just about beach dos and don’ts, but helping people find the best restaurants, stores, and bars if they’re interested. The future looks good.”

Reich presents the Volunteer Beach Ambassador program to the City on May 15. After that, she hopes to find volunteers to fill the positions.

Steps to Keep Turtles Safe As sea turtles make their way onto beaches at night, there aren’t very many people on the beach while they’re nesting. Despite this, daytime beachgoers aren’t in the clear.

According to Lisa Reich, the head of Coastal Wildlife Advocacy Group, the most important thing people can do is “leave no trace.” This means taking all belongings and trash from the beach when leaving, as well as filling in holes and knocking down sand castles.

“The biggest concepts are clean, dark, flat, and distance,” said Reich. “Make sure trash is gone. Keep lights low. Knock down sandcastles and fill in holes, and stay away from any nesting sea turtles. If you

Pinellas Residents Rally To Save West Klosterman Preserve

In the midst of a concrete expanse, small sections of forest and scrubland continue to survive in Pinellas County. One of which, a 14-acre plot in Tarpon Springs, may soon be home to a condominium complex.

Yet do these small green spaces in a sea of urbanization have value aside from more space for housing? The answer from the concerned neighbors of the WK Preservation Group and Tampa Bay conservationists: a resounding yes.

The West Klosterman Preserve Nestled next to the larger 76-acre Mariners Point Management Area in Tarpon Springs, this parcel of land contains longleaf pine forest and upland scrub — two habitats rapidly disappearing due to urbanization.

Within Pinellas County, these forests and scrublands can be found in small green spaces throughout the peninsula.

Yet regardless of its size, these small green spaces host a surprising abundance of biodiversity, with some of Florida’s iconic and relatively unknown flora and fauna finding a home amongst the sugar sand dunes and old growth oak trees. Among these species found within what locals wish to become the newest addition to the Mariners Point Management Area are the endangered Florida Rosemary bush, which hosts several native butterfly species, and a bustling colony of gopher tortoises.

The WK Preservation Group Directors of WK Preservation Group Kay and Tex Carter see the 14 acres as a defining characteristic of their neighborhood, blending city life with nature. Yet when they found out that the land, originally owned by the Pinellas County School Board, was being sold to developers

for a new condominium project, they chose to act. This was the catalyst that inspired the Carters and six others to organize the WK Preservation Group in 2020.

What followed is a movement spanning several years, powered by concerned neighbors and Tampa Bay naturalists who would rather see the 14 acres preserved instead of developed into another housing complex.

“If we don’t go ahead and save this [property] now, once it’s gone, it’s gone,” said Kay Carter.

Through streams of donations and eventually striking a deal with Pinellas County to put up half of the $3 million needed to purchase the land. The group finds themselves at a crossroads: They must raise roughly $879,000 by September 15 to meet the County in their contribution so as to protect the preserve from present and future development.

Small but Crucial The WK Preservation Group has applied to numerous land protection grants with little progress due to the parcel’s small size. However, according to St. Petersburg biologist and professor at Eckerd College Dr. Jeffery Goessling, the value of these small urban preserves is far beyond what we may expect.

According to Goessling, these smaller remnants of forest and scrubland, if properly protected, can act as a series of oasis in a sea of urban sprawl, linking populations of wildlife that have begun to adapt to live alongside human activity. Even though it may not be as expansive as some national parks, these small green spaces can protect vital habitat and safeguard populations of atrisk wildlife.

“Right now, we’re losing biodiversity at an alarming rate,” said Goessling. “Having small urban preserves that have tortoises in them helps keep populations from being isolated…forming constellations of nature in urban areas.”

Goessling has also studied gopher tortoises throughout the southeastern United States, including St. Petersburg’s Boyd Hill Preserve. To Goessling, the best way of protecting what remains of the threatened species is to protect them where they are currently located, thus avoiding the relatively high mortality rates that come with relocation.

Gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus), found throughout the 14acre parcel, create large burrows amongst scrubland and pine forests within the southeastern United States. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commision, their burrows also serve as a refuge from intense heat and cold and fire events for more than 350 species, making gopher tortoises a keystone species in Florida’s coastal upland ecosystem.

Preserving Biodiversity According to the WWF and 2022’s Living Planet Report, the world has lost roughly 69% of our global wildlife populations since

1970. Conservationists now urge the public to conserve any green spaces that host a thriving population of threatened or endangered species — such as the proposed WK Preserve.

These areas, according to Goessling, also have a large educational importance, allowing individuals who would not normally come into contact with nature to engage with it directly. This can help foster a care for the natural world, which can form into support for environmentally friendly policies and projects. Overall, allowing people to have a way to find nature, even in the most densely populated county in Florida, can have a large impact on their views towards conservation as a whole.

The WK Preservation Group has already begun giving tours to donors curious about the biodiversity found within this small area and its ecological benefits that go beyond a home for wildlife, such as a filter and buffer between urban sprawl runoff and the larger Klosterman Preserve. The preserve then feeds into the larger Saint Joseph Sound and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. The Carters fear that if this development moves forward, more contaminated runoff will enter the waterways, further polluting the already sensitive coastal ecosystem.

Uncertain Future As the Sept. 15 deadline to raise funds inches closer, the Carters and the rest of the WK Preservation Group team are doing everything they can to continue to garner support from the local community and beyond. Through newsletters, tours, and other outreach programs, they hope to inspire others to donate to the cause of conservation, regardless of how big or small it may be. At the end of the day, the Carters and their colleagues see the importance of green spaces deep in the city.

“There’s relaxation in nature,” said the Carters. “It has a true impact on humans — and so it is important to have these green spaces amongst all the concrete.”

Words From An Artist Jila Davoodi, a Town Shores resident, got to see her art for sale during the opening.

“We need a place like this. I love that I can walk down here from my condo and see art,” Davoodi said. “It makes Gulfport happier and more active. Gulfport loves art, and so does Brenda.”

Along with enjoyment from the community, Davoodi spoke about how important it is for the city as a whole.

“St. Petersburg is the biggest city around us, but there are a lot of smaller cities around it,” Davoodi said. “It makes Gulfport more important. It’s a reason for people to come from the other communities and tourists to come.”

Davoodi, an Iranian immigrant, found her home in art through the gallery.

“Brenda is such a great supporter.

She wants to watch us all succeed,” Davoodi said.

Future for the Brenda McMahon Gallery McMahon hopes to continue celebrating artists from all over the area, looking at even more art.

“Many people know Elizabeth Neily as the incredible artist she is with her fiber art, but even I

wall in between her gallery and the new space. During the First Friday ArtWalk, she unveiled her new gallery area.

“We had a champagne and chocolate cake opening. I’ve never seen the place so crowded,” McMahon said. “When I first got it, I really had to feel the space. It feels almost like a canvas for me.”

McMahon’s focus on showcasing local artists continues in the new gallery, but more is on the way.

“I’m hoping to bring new artists who are just finding their passion,” McMahon said. “It’s really exciting when you can see the talent radiating from their art.”

Three New South Pasadena Murals

Creative Pinellas and the City of South Pasadena commissioned six new murals. Throughout the past seven months, the South Pasadena Mural Project beautified Pasadena Avenue.

Artists painted the first round of South Pasadena murals in October and November. The selected artists were Ashley Cassens, Illsol Studio, and Brian McAllister.

Cassens’ mural graced the side of Florida Orange Groves Winery (1500 Pasadena Ave. S.). McAllister took on Pasadena Liquor and Fine Wines (1100 Pasadena Ave. S.). And artists from Illsol Studio worked on a mural at Leverocks (840 Pasadena Ave. S.).

City Administrator Carley Lewis said the first round of artists set the bar high, but felt confident the second round would be successful.

“It has been a pleasure to work with the arts community and our local businesses to move this project forward. I can’t wait to see what these artists create,” said Lewis.

The South Pasadena Mural Project intends to bring colors and impactful art to the community. According to Creative Pinellas, any Pinellas-based artists or artists with strong ties to the area could apply for the program.

“We were encouraged to have even more artist submissions for this round of murals than we had for the first,” said Mayor Arthur Penny. “It was difficult to choose from the immense local talent that applied.”

Second Round Artists For the second round of murals, selected artists were Cecilia Lueza, Sydney Prusso, and Ximena Sousa.

“These three artists bring to South Pasadena a world-class arts experience for both residents and visitors, and we are thrilled to continue our collaboration with the City,” said Creative Pinellas CEO Margaret Murray.

By February 2024, Creative Pinellas announced the second round of muralists. The chosen artists had from March 11 to April 29 to paint an enlarged version of their approved mural design.

Prusso created a cool-toned place of Zen on the side of Pasadena Bar and Grill. Prusso’s painting shows green leaves on branches with yellow flowers and a heron spreading its wings.

Along with that, Sousa painted a split picture of two scenes. On the left side, there is a tropical forest with orange, yellow, and green and coordinates across the top. On the right side, there is a blue ocean view with a mahi-mahi jumping out of the water.

Visitors can find Lueza’s work painted on one side of the South Pasadena Shopping Center.

This project with South Pasadena murals worked to bring vibrant and impactful murals to the community.

its technicolor postwar heyday. Political maneuvering beneath the story’s surface, marked by the outsized influence of organized crime and the game known as bolita, remind us that at least some of that sunshine was built on shadows.

The conflict between Thelma and her boss, Mrs. Kathleen Young is compelling. Florida Girls develops Kathleen’s character – ladylike but physically dominant, maternal but calculating when the situation calls for steel. Her character makes for delightful asymmetry between Kathleen and her diminutive, but emotionally-dependent husband. But Thelma doesn’t wish to be a pawn in another woman’s game. Kirchner develops their uneasy relationship in a slow, oh-so-relatable burn. She reminds us that stories of women’s advancement are as varied and complex as women themselves.

Florida Girls is not an undiluted celebration of a golden era in Florida history. They may rock out to Glen Miller, but their hardships haunt them. They are shrewd, not stoic, when it comes to survival. Expect some grit – the good and bad kind — and a complex plot. But you can also expect a candid and thoughtful look at the quest for self-determination.

Taco Miendo: Best I’ve Had If I could give out awards for best guacamole and best street corn, Taco Miendo would slay gold, hands down. For $7.50, you can enjoy a robust serving of scratch-made guacamole and chips. Studded with chunks of white onion, chopped tomatoes, and jalapeños, in conjunction with loads of freshly-squeezed lime juice, their guac explodes with flavor. I make some damn good guacamole, but Taco Miendo’s might be better than mine. The serving is big enough to share with a table of friends but in all honesty, I wouldn’t share — it’s too good.

The street corn ($4) is also top-notch.

I’m not usually a fan of corn on the cob for the sole reason of how messy it is and how it sticks to my teeth. But the street corn (available on the cob or in a cup), is totally worth the napkins and toothpicks. The grilled corn is smothered in mayo and cotija cheese, and then blasted with chili-lime Tajin seasoning for a uniquely piquant kick. It may sound like an odd combination of ingredients but if you’re at all familiar with Mexican street food, this dish is classic.

Kenneth City’s Taco Miendo Mexican Restaurant pumps out Mexican-inspired dishes. The guacamole is wonderful.

Mexican Street Food My Tour of Mexico platter ($13) arrived with a chicken tinga sope, chile rellenos, and a chicken tamale. It’s a fantastic combo if you can’t decide on what to order. Sopes are a traditional Mexican dish made of a fried masa (corn) base with savory toppings.

Mine came with a smattering of refried beans and topped with shredded chicken, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream. It’s basically an open-faced Mexican sandwich. My chile rellenos were filled with cheese, lightly battered and fried, and covered in red sauce. And the chicken verde tamale was steamed to perfection inside a delicate corn husk.

Next time, I’m going straight for the Cocktail de Camarones — shrimp covered in a creamy chipotle sauce. Or perhaps I’ll dive into carne asada with cactus slices. House favorites include the molcajete and parrillada. If you’re a fan of Mexican street tacos, try the al pastor, laguna (beef tongue), suadero, or carnitas. However, if you dig the current birria fad and want an off-the-wall experience, I recommend the ramen birria or the birria pizza.
