“Ugly and Beneath Us”?

With a nasty election coming to an end, the first Gulfport City Council meeting following the election fit the trend. The meeting began without issue, with the city clerk swearing in April Thanos (Ward I) and Paul Ray (Ward III). The packed City Hall cheered and rose from their seats, congratulating the council members. Although Ray ran unopposed, Thanos won her race for reelection against Tom Bixler on March 19.

Attempted Robbery?

Throughout the meeting, public comments and discussions between the Council members spoke about issues in the City, and in the council.

During the public comments section, Chris Kieff spoke passionately about an issue he sees with the City. According to Kieff, The Gabber Newspaper’s coverage of an issue regarding Tom Bixler’s campaign manager highlights a national issue making its way to Gulfport.

Controversies at City Council

As many of you have heard, the April 2 Gulfport City Council meeting turned spicy toward the end.

This week, you’ll find we’re running Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson’s closing comments from that meeting, and we’re also running Council member April Thanos’ (Ward I) response.

After Sam read his statement, he adjourned the meeting. The next day, I called and offered April the space to respond. Sam sent us his comments to run as a mayor’s corner. These were apparently two uncoordinated events; Sam sent us his prepared comments, and I get the sense he did so because he felt people didn’t hear his whole oratory.

What he perhaps didn’t realize was that we planned to ask for his speech in its entirety. We’d hoped to run his comments — and her reactions — side by side. Clearly, Sam has some feelings about April, and he wanted to make sure not only those watching or attending the meeting heard him, but that our readers did, too.

As for April’s response: Sam adjourned the meeting immediately following his comments, so we gave April a chance to respond. She has done so in the pages of this newspaper (we published both Sam’s speech and April’s response at thegabber.com.)

Running April’s response without letting readers know to what she was responding to would have told only half the story. Running Sam’s speech without April’s response felt unfair.

It is not the job of this newspaper — or any newspaper — to decide who the injured party is here. It’s our job — any newspaper’s job — to let people know what happened, and let them decide how they feel.

That said, I will say this — not as the woman who owns the paper, but as a voter, taxpayer, and someone who has a dog in the proverbial fight for the future of Gulfport: Please, Gulfport Council, find a way to work together. Both sides clearly feel wronged, but I’m not as concerned with who did what to whom as I am with having my elected representatives hear our voices and respond to our needs.

Mayor Sam Henderson’s Statement By now many citizens will have watched the five-minute, rage-filled rant of Mayor Henderson. His behavior was beneath us: the citizens of Gulfport; we deserve better and we recently voted accordingly to have what we believe to be the best representation for our city.

In addition to being unseemly and unprofessional; the Mayor’s rant was disingenuous; if he was really upset about the tone of the election “on both sides,” why didn’t he withdraw his endorsement of [Tom] Bixler?

It truly does depend on whose ox is being gored.

Mr. Mayor, I was disappointed at your unprofessional behavior at the April 2 Council meeting!!

I live in Town Shores and, along with my husband have been to many Gulfport council meetings.

Former Mayor Yakes always conducted himself professionally and fairly. He listened to the people of Gulfport and considered their needs and opinions. He was a man of the people. When his council members disagreed with him, he worked with them until they reached an agreement. He did not become sarcastic or belligerent; he understood they were also working for the betterment of the people of Gulfport. It was beautiful to see everyone working together. It is the mayor’s job to bring his council together, not divide them.

Since you took office, it has been very apparent that you get ruffled feathers when someone does not agree with you or your idea. You frequently become sarcastic and verbally demean them.

You have one councilman [sic] who never disagrees with you. It appears this person does not have a mind of their own. I am sure they do, but they are afraid to disagree with you. This kind of atmosphere causes

a waste of time and stifles growth/ progress.

Mr. Mayor, if you can not work to unite the council, then please step out of the way.

Does Mr. Henderson not know her name after serving with her for four years? Or is he just being rude? Time for Mr. Henderson to get on with business. It’s possible that Ms. Thanos will represent Gulfport for a long time. I certainly hope so.

A Post-Election Rhetoric First of all, congratulations to those of you who voted for the Ward I Council member. It was a fair election, and no one is contesting the outcome. Your candidate won.

In terms of the campaigns themselves, I hope we never see another like it in this city. It was ugly, and it was beneath us and it wasn’t the first. The campaign managers and select supporters from both camps did the candidates, the electorate and our city a disservice. Blatant rule breaking, intentional untruths issued to the voting public, and despicable personal attacks. The campaign managers are not on the ballot, however, and with this type of behavior the buck stops with the candidates. You are ultimately responsible for the deeds done on your behalf.

Rules are important. There is nothing democratic about cheating to gain the advantage and nothing ethical about smearing your opponent. There is no place for this in Gulfport where we pride ourselves on being a “hate has no home here” community. These are not switches to be turned on and off to suit our desires. Sometimes you can chalk these things up to lack of experience or ignorance, but this race was marred by intentional malice. We have to be better than this.

I know there is a great deal of anger in this room about the unanimous lack of Council support for the incumbent. The words ‘disrespectful’ and ‘bullying’ have come up frequently regarding this. I agree that we are all due a basic level of respect as human beings but mutual respect is a two-way street. Over the course of lengthy relationships, additional respect is either earned or that respect is eroded depending on behavior. The latter is the case here.

In my experiential view, the Ward I Council member has undermined and vilified not only her fellow Coun-

cil members but members of our City Staff. She has likewise time and time again encouraged her acolytes to push her agenda — actually having them represent her instead of the other way around.

This is exactly the type of behavior that resulted in not a single colleague on this dais supporting her campaign. Standing up to a bully is not being a bully, no matter how loud and often you shout otherwise.

You cannot harangue and intimidate people into letting you do whatever you want in a democracy, especially as an elected official. It is the very fabric of democracy, as our Ward I representative pointed out during the last election, that gives us the freedom to support the candidate that we choose. And that support must also be earned.

Each one of us is 1/5 of this Council.

My vote carries no more weight than anyone else’s. And we all are challenged with representing the city as a whole. Anytime that a Council member loses sight of that, allows ego to get in the way, it is incumbent upon the rest of us to strike the balance and ensure that the work

is about bettering the City as opposed to kowtowing to the loudest voices in the room. We all have an equal responsibility here to make sure that this work is the focus, not the personalities and designs of any one of our board. The job we have to do is bigger than any one of us. We can disagree, that is actually part of the job, but we must do it honestly, transparently and without vitriol, falsehoods and scheming.

That being said, I hope that we can collectively move in a more positive direction. I have my doubts, but I would love to see it happen. You have two more years in this seat, for me perhaps only one, and it is not impossible that we start to change the hostile narrative that has sadly clouded much of the last four years on this Council. It will require accountability, effort and owning our words and actions. That cannot happen without a conscientious effort by all of us, all of us, to change the tone and substance of how we do our jobs both in the sunshine, and outside of the spotlight.

April Thanos to Mayor: Stop the Vitriol At the close of the Gulfport City Council meeting of April 2, the mayor leveled many untrue, unfounded, and unsupported accusations at me, as a councilor and as a person. This is not the standard of conduct you should expect from your city government.

Without truth, we are nothing. It is imperative that I respond so that blatant lies do not go unanswered.

The mayor accused me of the following and more, without providing evidence. I deny that these are true: •That I partook in blatant rule breaking, intentional untruths, despicable personal attacks in the campaign •That I have skirted council rules •That I have exhibited intentional malice •That I am a bully (Since the mayor and three council members lined up against me in the election, I have to wonder if the word even has meaning any more? I wondered again when the mayor said we should not kowtow to the loudest voices in the room.)

•That I have undermined and vilified members of the council and city staff April Thanos’ Post-Election Response I want to respond to his remarks about my encouraging Gulfport citizens to step forward to do my bidding. When people bring their concerns to me as their representative, I do encourage them to come to council meetings and speak up, not on my behalf, but on their own behalf. Isn’t that the way it’s supposed to work? Is Mr. Henderson vilifying me for letting the public know they can and should speak directly to the council?

April 2 Gulfport City Council Updates How does the first City Council meeting go after a contentious election? Exactly how you’d expect. The standing-room-only April 2 Gulfport City Council meeting included the normal public comments and multiple discussion items, but ended with a conflict between Mayor Sam Henderson and members of the crowd.

Before the meeting began, every seat in the City Hall was filled. City staff gave up their seats and people still had to stand in the hallway to watch the meeting.

Swearing In As with all city council meetings following an election, the April 2 meeting began with the swearing in of April Thanos (Ward I) and Paul Ray (Ward III). Although Ray ran unopposed, Thanos, the incumbent, beat Tom Bixler to hold onto her Ward I seat. After they swore their oath to the City, the crowd cheered for more than a minute. After getting sworn in, the council brought up the Vice Mayor seat. Since they rotate who is the Vice Mayor, Ian O’Hara (Ward IV) will take the spot.

Marina Thoughts During the public comments section of the meeting, various audience members brought up their thoughts on the proposed changes to Gulfport’s Municipal Marina. Many of them also shared their displeasure with the marina concept meeting on March 25.

The first man to give his public comment didn’t provide his name, but spoke about the importance of quality of life in Gulfport. According to him, the proposed plans for the marina will ruin that quality of life.

“Last week, we had a sales meeting. I can’t call it anything else,” said the man.

Tracy Jameson echoed this idea, saying that if the presenter at the

marina meeting was a student teacher, they would’ve gotten an F. “How many sardines can you cram into a can,” asked Walter Barker during his comment. Barker went on to describe how crowded the marina district already is, and how the plans to redevelop it would make that worse. Julie Jacoby spoke to this issue as well.

“I’m puzzled as to what is the driving force behind the marina redevelopment,” said Jacoby.

Later, during her council comment, Thanos brought this back up.

She said she was surprised by the lack of preparation from Stantec at the meeting.

“Hopefully if we do another charrette, we use a different company, because I would never use them again,” said Thanos.

Sazerac Lounge Updates Other than displeasure with the Marina plans, residents spoke about their ongoing issues with the Sazer-

ac Lounge in Gulfport. The bar and club, formerly Zipperz bar, has gained a reputation for being loud and disturbing to the houses near the intersection of 22nd Avenue and 49th Street South.

A woman named Melody spoke mainly about the noise from the bar.

While she gave her last name, City Clerk Theresa Carrico was unable to hear it.

“We have called non-emergency police lines to make complaints.

They’re opening a case on it, but the ordinance says 55 decibels is a violation,” said Melody. She said that the sound reaching her house is only measured at 53 decibels.

Response From The Chief At the end of the public comments section, the mayor called up Gulfport Police Chief Rob Vincent to speak about the bar. According to Vincent, there are an unusually high number of calls relating to the Sazerac Lounge, mostly pertaining

“Comparatively speaking, there are more violations occurring at the bars in the downtown area,” said Vincent. “Every complaint we’ve responded to, we have yet to uncover a violation of the City code.”

Vincent spoke about how a lot of the noise from the bar isn’t coming from the bar, but from the vehicles parked at the bar. While there is a statute that prevents loud music in cars, they need to be on a roadway, not a parking lot.

Additionally, Vincent talked about how many of the issues related to the bar happen after people leave the bar. He spoke about issues the previous weekend where people were leaving the bar, and going to a private bottle club down the road.

When they couldn’t find parking, they blocked the roadway, also, he said, doing donuts in the street.

“We’re not ignoring the issues, but there isn’t much we can do in terms of the law,” said Vincent.

Despite this, the question came

up about stopping problematic cars as they left the lounge. Vincent said they tried to stop the cars, but they generally don’t stop and flee into St. Pete. He said it is a public safety issue to start a high speed chase.

Thanos questioned this, saying, “Why do we have pursuit vehicles if we can’t pursue anything?” Vincent responded by saying they are trying to work with St. Pete Police and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to continue pursuit using a helicopter.

Watershed Plan Justin Keller from Advanced Engineering took some time to update the City on the Watershed Management Plan and Vulnerability assessment. According to Keller, the watershed management plan is a long term stormwater study looking at how the City takes care of stormwater overflows. The vulnerability assessment focuses on short term significant storm events like the Council continued on page 8

Dog Park Throughout the last couple of Gulfport City Council meetings, residents have brought up issues with the large dog park in the City. The main issue comes from the grass in the middle of the park being ripped up by large dogs. At the April 2 meeting, the council discussed what to do.

According to Tom Nicholls, Gulfport’s Public Works director, the research he has done on the subject shows that most places just stick with re-sodding as it is impossible to please everyone. However, he spoke about the viability of other options. The main two options are wood fibers, and decomposed granite. Both of these would fill the area, be non-toxic to dogs, and environmentally friendly. The discussion came down to pricing both options, and then just using it to replace the damaged area of the park as a test run.

Rules and Policies The last discussion item of the night was changes to the rules and policies for City Council and comment at council meetings. Mayor Henderson opened the floor for public comment on the issue. Lauren Stern (disclaimer: Stern works

Karen Love and Walter Barker agreed, saying it would allow the community to comment on what council said.

Mary Hanrahan brought up how items are put on the agenda. While a council member can raise an idea, there needs to be a majority of the council who agrees to discuss the idea before it’s on the agenda. She said this doesn’t work, and a council member should be able to discuss things without a majority.

Thanos’ Thoughts After the audience had their chance to speak, Thanos brought up some ideas for change that she has.

First, she spoke about what Stern had brought up, and how it would make public comments better. The council approved this, with O’Hara voting against it.

The second idea she brought up was for a representative to keep the council accountable and make sure they’re following the rules of decorum. While the council didn’t designate someone, they said the City Clerk, City Attorney, and City Manager should all be able to speak up. Third, she spoke about taking items off of the consent agenda to be voted on separately. The council can vote to take something off, but a single council member can’t have something removed. Thanos said an individual should be able to do so. The rest of council disagreed, and the item didn’t pass.

Finally, Thanos brought up how the rules state that politics can’t interfere with council meetings. With this, she states that the letter that Mayor Henderson read at the last city council meeting was appropriate for The Gabber Newspaper, but not for a council meeting. He said he disagreed, and the meeting continued.

As the Mayor continued, many people in the audience began to stand and leave, or yell at the mayor.

“Andy, this is exactly what you should be intervening for,” said Thanos, referencing a discussion earlier in the night about having a parliamentarian who can make sure the council is sticking to rules of decorum during meetings.

“We haven’t passed the resolution yet,” replied Mayor Henderson.

Mayor’s Statement As the meeting came to a close, the Mayor was the last person to speak, as he always is. He began a prepared statement, talking about the most recent election, and issues he saw from both sides.

“First of all, congratulations to those who voted for April as your Ward I Council member. It was a fair election, no one is contesting the outcome, your candidate won, so I would’ve thought there’d have been a lot more happy people here tonight,” said Henderson.

“In terms of campaigns themselves, I hope we never see another like it in this city. It was ugly, it was beneath us, and it wasn’t the first.”

Mayor Henderson continued on talking about issues from both campaigns. He spoke about personal at-

tacks, misinformation spreading, and rule breaking.

“There is no place for this in Gulfport where we pride ourselves on being a ‘hate has no home here’ community,” said Henderson.

He addressed the displeasure with council for supporting Bixler over Thanos during the election.

Henderson said many people have brought up the words disrespectful and bullying. According to Henderson, all the council members deserve respect from each other.

“Over the course of relationships however, additional respect is either earned, or that respect is eroded depending on the behavior. The latter is the case here,” said Henderson. Mayor Henderson went on to accuse Thanos of undermining and villifying City staff.

He also claimed that she has consistently asked her supporters to act on her behalf.

As the meeting ended, Thanos immediately replied to the Mayor.

“What do you think I did wrong, Sam?” asked Thanos before the microphones were shut off.

The rest of the council members stood up and left without commenting. The Gabber Newspaper reached out to Paul Ray, Christine Brown (Ward II), Ian O’Hara (Ward IV), and Mayor Henderson. Mayor Henderson and Brown did not answer. Both Ray and O’Hara said they were not aware of the statement before the Mayor began speaking.

“At first, when he was talking about how ugly the election was, I agreed,” said Ray. “As he continued I was flabbergasted. I was extremely uncomfortable. My first instinct was to get up and walk away. April and I may not be the best of friends but we often vote together on issues. That is something I would never say publicly and it does not align with my beliefs.”

O’Hara declined to comment on whether the Mayor’s statement represents his thoughts.

St. Pete Beach’s TradeWinds Island Resort has innovative plans for the resort’s rooftop. As part of the resort’s expansion, the TradeWinds will build a rooftop terrace.

The Rooftop View Terrace will be a place for the public to watch beachfront views such as sunsets on the Gulf Coast from the 12-story resort. It will approximately be 4,800 square feet.

All are welcome to visit the TradeWinds’ Rooftop View Terrace.

Visitors do not need to be guests of the resort. Food and drinks will be available to buy. A dedicated elevator for the terrace will take people to the rooftop.

According to the resort’s press release, this is the first of its kind in Pinellas County and possibly Florida.

“Our goal has always been to invite the community into our property by making appealing community features, and this matches that mindset,” said Joe Smith of 1754 Properties, owner of the TradeWinds.

The TradeWinds Island Resort has Nunzio Marc Desantis Architects designing the Rooftop View Terrace. The press release said the area will “provide a provide to sit, watch the Gulf Coast sunsets, or stroll around.” Other terrace features includes a lookout balcony and a glass floor looking down on the resort’s pool and the beach.

“The rooftop will be a one-of-akind spot along the Pinellas beaches,” said Scott Eisenhart of Nunzio Marc Desantis Architects. “We are designing it to create an unparalleled view for the public, and look forward to when it will be open for everyone to enjoy.”

Heart-Warming Humor in Ghostlight’s Second Samuel Welcome to the small town of Second Samuel, Georgia, where the death of a beloved music teacher and friend both polarizes and unites the eclectic collection of town folk.

Ghostlight Young Company’s production of Second Samuel is an entertaining, humorous, heart-warming theater experience.

The story unfolds in a unique three-in-one-stage set up representing the small town. It begins at the central stoop with narrator and seemingly simple character B-Flat, superbly portrayed by Landon Moore. He begins his introductory narration of the town of Second Samuel in the summer of 1949. His naive, yet powerful, words and interactions move the drama along as he tells the story of his connection with the recently departed music teacher and his dear friend, Miss Gertrude. With the passing of his father, Gertrude took it upon herself to check in on B-Flat every day.

With her passing, he is set somehow adrift in his hometown where some folks are compassionate toward him and others, judgmental.

Two Mini Stages B-Flat wanders in and out of the other two mini stages. One stage is the local bar, The Bait and Brew, owned by Frisky (played by Daniel Harris). The other side of the stage is the town beauty shop, owned by Frisky’s wife, Omaha — hysterically and delightfully played by Tammy Lukas.

These two actors carry the lion’s share of the town’s drama. The beauty shop sits stage left and as the action moves from one location to the other. The stage lights make the scene change sometimes leaving the background drama unfolding in pantomime. In the more dramatic scenes, the lighting movement creates the suspense, and was masterfully provided by David Sweat.

Second Samuel is a show wrapped in a blanket of Southern comedy. But, when a recently deceased resident’s personal details are revealed, it becomes a play with a big message.

The everyday conversations that happen in both the bar and beauty shop when characters are talking about community members who are different. These conversations spotlight the polarization among the town folk and reveal the prejudices and heroics of community members of Second Samuel.

Bar Conversations Bar owner Fritz proudly announces that he will bequeath the bar to U.S., (Craig Kennedy) the town’s only man of color who has been raised like a brother to Fritz.

Mr. Mozel, (Eric Walby) objects and speaks of the U.S.’s race as being prohibitive for such an action, to which Fritz replies he can go drink somewhere else if he doesn’t like it.

Of course, Fritz’s bar is the only one close by, so he knows Mr. Mozel has no choice but to abandon

that line of conversation. Walby plays the prejudiced Mr. Mozel with the edge that the audience needed to dislike his character.

Beauty Shop Talk Meanwhile, over at the beauty shop, there was a similar situation when Jimmy Deanne, played by Jennifer Casler, objects to B-Flat’s presence with the ladies. B-Flat arrives at the shop to collect hair clippings to sell as rodent repellent. Marcela buys B-Flat and herself a coke and they both chug it down to have a burping contest.

She also played that role in the inaugural production of Second Samuel. Casler nailed the role of the villianness among the women. Ruby, played by Kathernine Laczko, is the peace-making mild hairdresser who later stands up for her beliefs.

Bill Shideler played the rascally Mansel. His wife kept him locked in the barn to finish repairs. However, he made an escape to have drinks with the rest of the guys at the Bait and Brew.

Miss Gertrude’s Funeral The plot progresses as Omaha heads to the funeral home to fix the deceased Miss Gertrude’s hair for the funeral. While there, she makes a shocking discovery. One discovery that will be the discourse among the residents of Second Samuel for the rest of the play.

June Cline (Alan Coyle), one of the men at the bar, countered Omaha’s hysterical screaming at the discovery with a very calm monologue. Alternating spotlights from the bar to the beauty parlor effectively showed Omaha’s hysterics and Cline’s calm.

The lights froze the action on the darkened location. It built tension for the great — and soft-spoken — reveal of what Omaha discovered.

This became one of several powerful theatrical moments in this play.

Rachel Fennell’s directorial talents showed their brilliance here.

On Stage Mishap But kudos have to go to the young Landon Moore. In the second act, the panel to the beauty shop collapsed onto the stage, narrowly missing several actors.

Without missing a beat Moore said, “I told Fritz he needed to fix that door,” and went right on with the show.

Moore’s characterization of B-Flat, who becomes the most rational-minded and compassionate person in all of Second Samuel and is ever-apparent because of Moore’s acting.

Gulfport Celebrates Scenic Art with In Plein Sight

Gulfport Merchant Chamber of Commerce’s In Plein Sight event celebrates the scenic views of Gulfport by 12 plein air painters.

Gulfport’s art community is one of the many reasons residents and tourists love the city. From live music at the Tuesday markets, to the First Friday ArtWalk, the community finds a way to celebrate its artists.

On April 5, the Gulfport Merchant’s Chamber of Commerce held their fifth annual In Plein Sight event.

This event promotes en plein air painting, which is the act of painting outdoors instead of in a studio.

Artists 18 years or older were invited to participate, and all of the paintings had to be done within Gulfport. Prior to the normal First Friday ArtWalk, the pieces are judged, and the winners get cash prizes.

Setting Up the Art The GMC partnered with the North End Taphouse to host the event.

Early in the afternoon, the 12 paintings displayed their work around the stage. Along with this, artists set up booths around Beach Boulevard to sell everything from paintings to jewelry to woodwork. One of these booths highlighted the work of two artists involved in the event: Nancy

Poucher and Cedar Kindy.

Poucher and Kindy set up a display to promote their art and in plein air painting as a whole.

“Painting in plein air is a good reason to sit outside. It is a visceral experience. It allows you to see the world in more color and sound,” Kindy said.

Poucher runs Gulfport Florida Plein Air Painters, a group dedicated to the unique form of painting.

“I hope it becomes more common,” said Poucher. “If people want to join they just need to check Facebook to see where we’re meeting that Wednesday.”

Both Poucher and Kindy submitted their paintings to the show.

Other Artists Artists who weren’t participating in the show still found a way to participate in the event. As early as 1 p.m. vendors began to line Beach Boulevard. One of these vendors included Jim and Suzie Amlaw selling their wooden art pieces. Cozmic Crafts, the name of their business, focuses on burning wood to make art. This includes dogs, musicians,

actors, and other images.

“We’re not in the show, but we still get to be a part of the event,” said Jim. “It brings people around which is good for everyone.”

The Winners of In Plein Sight While artists had the chance to show and sell their art around Gulfport, the main event began at 4:30 p.m. with the judging of the contest.

Of the 12 paintings, only three could win. Janie Haskins won Best in Show with her painting of an alleyway with multiple colorful houses. Poucher earned second place, painting the saltwater through a clearing of trees. Kindy won the Award of Merit for her painting of boats washed onto the beach at low tide. Haskins won $300, Poucher won $150, Kindy won $75.

All artwork that didn’t sell at the event is available at the GMC Welcome Center.

Menu Upgrade at Gulfport Brewery + Eatery The entire Tampa Bay area has become a Mecca for small-batch beer brewers. In fact, many independent breweries now distribute in cans and bottles to some Tampa Bay grocery stores. Gulfport Brewery + Eatery is a neighborhood favorite with a cultlike following.

Don’t be fooled by the laid-back exterior — inside is a beer haven with brews and bites for everyone. This beer bungalow serves their own label on draft, including many award-winning beers, along with wine and seltzer selections for those who aren’t fans of suds. But few local breweries put as much effort and creativity into their food selections as Gulfport Brewery.

Grinders As a chef, I love following the brewery’s social media for the latest specials. They’re always creative and trend-setting, and you’re guaranteed a flavorful time. While the prices are bit steep compared to the rest of Gulfport, the menu features fun items like boiled peanuts, egg rolls, hot dogs, loaded tater tots, and flatbreads. There’s also a vegan menu with burritos, rice bowls, and decadent salads.

Be sure to bring Fido along. The dog menu for your four-legged friends includes grilled chicken, a hot dog, and a MilkBone. It’s like a puppy happy meal!

New to the menu this season are the grinders. They’re baked sub sandwiches loaded with meats, cheeses and veggies that come in a variety of combos and are sure to make you salivate. We tried the Reef Madness grinder ($12.99) with turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, house vinaigrette, and keef. Keef is the brewery’s homemade mix of grated parmesan cheese, oregano, salt, and pepper.

Richard Timothy Richard Timothy passed away peacefully on March 10, 2024. He was born on July 28, 1935. He moved to Gulfport in 2005.

He is survived by five children, Terri Veno (Nick), Patti Krolikowski (Paul), Kathi Timothy, Rick Timothy, and Sandi Kade (Stan), his eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, his brother and two nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, a grandson, and his daughter-inlaw. The family would like to thank his long-time friend Gary Broadbent for taking such good care of him.

A service with military honors will be helped at Bay Pines Cemetery Pavilion on April 12, 2024 at 10 a.m.

Grounded Gallery Paints Earth Day Mural in Gulfport

Hao Penghe’s art students, colleagues, and strangers came to help paint the Earth Day mural.

With Earth Day around the corner, one Gulfport art gallery invited the community to paint a meaningful mural. On April 7, Hao Penghe, owner of Grounded Gallery, had around 30 people paint the Earth Day-inspired mural alongside him.

Penghe painted an example canvas prior to the painting session.

After the property owner approved, Penghe painted a white, base coat then sketched the scene on the outside of the gallery’s building.

Earth Day Mural The mural is 10 feet tall and 15 feet wide. The visual has an orangeand-red sunset on light blue water behind a globe with a vibrant, city skyline and a palm tree swooping across the scene. Along with that, a large, white pelican flies above the Earth with two white birds flying in the opposite direction.

Penghe posted the event online inviting others to join with this statement: “On this Earth Day, let’s

reflect on our responsibility to the planet and work together to protect our shared home.”

From 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Penghe, his students, colleagues, and strangers painted sections on the mural.

Penghe had a long table with different paint colors on plates next to the wall. He set up the mural to be a paint-by-number process. Each color belonged to a specific number on the mural. This kept everyone organized and able to lend a hand efficiently.

“One child came on a skateboard from the neighborhood in Gulfport.

Senior citizens joined in and helped younger children paint difficult areas,” said Paula Allen, the gallery’s art admin consultant. “It was a day of celebrating the Earth, the community and art. It was made possible by Hao and his enormous generosity.”

Penghe said he felt great with the finalized mural and the participant turnout.

“I received a lot of messages from people telling me it is so good and it’s so amazing what it stands for,” Penghe said.

Grounded Gallery Penghe opened the Grounded Gallery on Gulfport Boulevard in 2022. He showcases work by international artists in the gallery. Also, he hosts group and individual art classes in the gallery or in-home classes. He said he travels to teach in Sarasota, Orlando, and Tampa.

“His artistic ability is huge and we are so lucky to have him in Gulfport,” Allen said.

Penghe said he spoke with his students about the mural. Eventually, Penghe and his students came up with the design.
