Smooth Sailing or Rough Seas?

At the meeting, people could offer input about what Gulfport Marina changes they wanted to see — and what they didn’t want.

While Gulfportians are all too familiar with flooding from storm surge, they’re also quite familiar with working and playing on the water. Gulfport’s Municipal Marina serves the community through providing business, recreation, and education. The marina’s importance also makes it a major topic of discussion in Gulfport. On March

25, the City partnered with Stantec Consulting to meet with the community to discuss a possible concept for the marina. From 6-8 p.m., community members, stakeholders, and experts gathered in the Historic Gulfport Casino to talk about ideas.

In a press release from the City, Marina Director Denis Frain shared his thoughts on the meeting.

“We are excited to engage with our community and partner with Stantec Consulting to chart the course for the future of our Municipal Marina,” said Frain. “This meeting presents a valuable opportunity for residents to voice their opinions, share ideas, and contribute to the enhancement of this vital community asset.”

Truth and Consequences: What can we learn from the Municipal Elections?

Gulfport has just completed the first of three 2024 elections. And, if we’re smart, we’ll all take a deep breath and reflect on lessons we can learn from the process.

Campaigning and governing in these times takes commitment, courage, and grit. Both candidates put their ideas, time, money, and reputations on the line to serve our community. We are fortunate to have people willing to step up for what can be challenging and time-consuming roles with only modest compensa-

tion, an abundance of grievances, but hopefully, sufficient intrinsic rewards.

Elections are mirrors and amplifiers of the stories we tell ourselves and each other. They are opportunities to learn more about Gulfport and how it works; observe our leaders and what they prioritize; and vote for people who love this city and want to contribute to its evolution and vitality.

I encourage both candidates, their teams, and supporters to debrief the election with: What worked and what didn’t?

What assumptions proved wrong?

What will I/we do differently in the future?

I hope that the Mayor and City Council members will also reflect on their public endorsement of one candidate over another. As private citizens, support whoever you want. But it doesn’t seem necessary or appropriate for public leaders to demonstrate a preference for one candidate over others.

An unfortunate consequence would be to discourage skilled, knowledgeable, and energetic people from contributing to our City’s future.

This a great time to reflect, reset, and remember — despite our different perspectives and experiences — we’re all in this together.

March 8 Kenneth City Town Council Meeting

At the March 8 Kenneth City Council meeting, the town council fought through arguments to discuss the night’s agenda.

Disagreements and arguments between the members of the town council of Kenneth City and the town manager are costing the small Pinellas town (roughly 5,000 people live there) more than its reputation.

While disagreement peaked over public records and how and when to report them to the public, the town council demonstrated its capacity to reach a consensus about one item: giving more time to residents to repair their property to have it up to code after damages from natural disasters.

Internal Affairs The first item of business was to thank Chief Richard Graham (from Lealman) for his support. The moment was short-lived, as then-Council member Megan Zemaitis (she won the race for Mayor on March 19) delivered to the rest of the council printed copies of how other cities reported their public records online.

Last month, The Gabber Newspaper reported on the transparency issues of the town. Zemaitis asked

to not approve the meeting minutes produced by the deputy town clerk, because they did not reflect in detail the Town’s work during the May 2023-February 2024 period.

“If a resident couldn’t attend, they can take the minutes and have a clear understanding of what took place,” said Zemaitis, arguing that that was not the case for the minutes at hand.

Zemaitis noted her comments from the Feb. 14 Council meeting as missing.

“None of [Vice-mayor Noble’s] comments were listed either,” she added.

“First of all, we don’t have a town clerk,” said Noble.

Kenneth City has a deputy town clerk.

Resignation Issues “We did have a town clerk and our town clerk resigned,” said Noble.

The Vice-mayor of Kenneth City proceeded to read a letter of resignation from a previous town clerk.

Council member Kyle Cummings interrupted Noble arguing a lack of de-

corum, citing “civil conduct” rules in Kenneth City.

“I have no problem with talking about the minutes. But I have a problem with reading a letter which reflects the conduct between an employee of Kenneth City and the city manager,” said Cummings.

Noble argued that because it involved Kenneth City staff, it was relevant.

“Thank you for your comments,” said Noble. “It’s a matter of public record.”

The Vice-mayor tried again to bring up the point, but then-Mayor Robert Howell called a 10-minute recess.

It was 6:39 p.m.

Minutes Taken, Minutes Lost “I am not going to allow our manager or any other employee to be dragged through the mud like this,” said Mayor Howell.

Vice-mayor Noble continued with her statement.

“Our website does work,” she said, and also argued he town wasn’t simply not publishing; she protested the lack of detail. Town Attorney Ralf

Brookes explained that the minutes aligned with statutes and noted that the minutes did not have to be filed verbatim. Noble said they need to serve with excellence, not just do the “bare minimum.” Council member Bob Arrison said that in the past one could reference the minutes to understand the concerns of the citizens. Council member Zemaitis highlighted that minutes are missing from the website.

Cummings said that the council is at the same place they started.

“It just looks like a pattern,” he added. Town Manager Lacy LaFave said that the website is broken and that it “doesn’t work.” She proposed to publish the videos on YouTube. Some 2022 meetings have been uploaded to the video platform.

LaFave told The Gabber Newspaper in late February “I anticipate the new website will be ready within twothree months,” via text. Members of the council agreed and built upon the proposal of documenting the meetings on video. Zemaitis noted that the files could be used to produce transcripts. Howell said that they could be in turn used to produce detailed minutes. Town Attorney Brookes continued to offer insight on the legal requirements of the minutes.

Continuing to Argue “I’ve never had a [certified] town clerk,” LaFave said. “I came into a

ghost town of every single department.”

Cummings said that there’s “bigger fish to fry,” noting a need to tend to other business at hand.

LaFave said that the minutes are “statutorily correct.” She also said that some members of the council don’t follow rules of order, “which drives me crazy.”

When Noble brought back the point that Kenneth City had not had a certified town clerk in some time, LaFave interrupted the Vice-mayor again.

“Please refrain from attacking my staff,” LaFave said. Noble clarified she was not doing that. Arrison noted that they needed to hire what the town manager needed. LaFave said they “begged” other cities to poach their clerks.

“No one wants to come to work to Kenneth City because of the hostility,” LaFave added, before claiming that the town clerk who resigned had a questionable background.

The motion to approve the minutes failed to pass. A member of the public laughed.

Noble noted that they missed calling for public comment.

No One’s Business Towards the end of the meeting, council member Arrison brought up the night’s events.

“Tonight we lost a potential busi-

ness and we lost tax revenue,” Arrison stated in the final moments of the meeting.

Arrison was referring to two acquaintances of LaFave who showed up to the meeting. While it wasn’t the main reason they came, they spoke about their issues with the meeting.

“This is very discouraging,” said Jessica Tonkin. The businesswoman shared she came from Tampa to consider relocating in Kenneth City.

“If this is the type of thing that we can expect in the future, I won’t be coming back here,” said Taiylor Wennick, who also drove from Tampa to be there. Wennick singled out council member Zemaitis and claimed she was running a “smear campaign.”

Other Affairs The almost two-hour-long meeting included comments from other members of the public. Someone noted the importance of keeping records available to the public, and another supported the idea of video recording the meetings, noting that it would even help against “eye rolls,” which were seen throughout the meeting. LaFave had several items to present before the council.

community together.

Lance Schmidt gave an update on the process of auditing the 2022 finances of the town.

“We are very, very close to showing the audit,” he said.

“The audit is going to cost a little bit more” than what was voted on, said LaFave.

LaFave shared that there was also a legislative update. She noted that their liaison in Tallahassee has been working to get funds from the State for appropriations.

“This is real live-action news from today,” LaFave said, given that the Florida Legislature had wrapped up.

Town Attorney Brookes proceeded to read a letter from Tallahassee: “I am happy to report that we were successful in getting half of the funding that you requested from the legislature for your multiuse emergency operation and community policing complex,” the letter read.

The amount is roughly $375,000, according to Brookes. The letter added that it still has to be signed and pass by the Governor of the State, “but I am already working on that front,” the letter from the State liaison said. Part of the letter noted that “Kenneth City has a lot of work to do to on rebuilding its reputation,” but added that they are “cautiously optimistic.”

St. Petersburg Fire Chief Vacancy

The City of St. Petersburg is looking for a new fire chief.

The City of St. Petersburg is starting their search for a new fire chief.

According to a press release, the City is looking for a “dynamic and experienced leader to continue the department’s tradition of excellence in public safety and emergency response.”

The fire chief’s job is to oversee the St. Petersburg Fire Rescue (SPFR), “including budget management, inter-local agreements, and public relations.” The City is looking for a strong leader, someone with firefighting and emergency management experience. The ideal candidate will have a “minimum of five years of executive management experience in EMS, rescue operations, and fire suppression.” They also need a bachelor’s degree, although the City prefers someone with a master’s degree.

Depending on qualifications, the salary is flexible, but not more than $227,517. This includes health benefits, annual and sick leave, 11 paid holidays, bereavement leave, and paid parental leave. The City also offers the option between a municipal pension and a 401(a).

SPFR Updates The SPFR has 13 stations across the City. Each of the stations is managed by a fire captain, all of whom report to the fire chief. Outside of rescue duties, the staff have a variety of other things they do.

Stantec provided the community with a partially empty map and some ideas for where to add services like parking or a restaurant.

Purpose of the Meeting “We get to see what people want, or don’t want for the Marina,” said Ward IV council member Ian O’Hara.

As the meeting opened, Lorrie Viola, senior planner for Stantec, introduced the agenda.

“You may vision [the marina] just as it is and not want any changes,” said Viola. The audience applauded.

In order to hear what the com-

munity wants, the attendees used cards to write their ideas down and give them to Stantec. Residents who are interested but could not attend can fill out an online survey at surveymonkey.com/r/GPMARINA24.

Planning for the Future As the meeting began, Viola brought up the future of the project.

After compiling the ideas from this meeting, Stantec will hold a second,

more targeted meeting focused on the cards they received. This is set for late April or early May. The final concept for the marina is due in June.

Before hearing from the community, Stantec and the City have their priorities. This includes expanding parking and public access, more dry boat storage, a space for a park, and a new multi-use, two-story building.

Marina Concepts from the Audience “I think making all of these changes would take away from the simplicity of Gulfport,” said Nancy Sepulveda, a Gulfport resident and kayak owner. “I’m for improvement, but not making it more commercial.”

“My table didn’t really understand the reasoning behind the project,” said Brian Derr, a former sailing student at the marina. “Most of the people were concerned with attracting more people to the area

because of parking. It doesn’t even meet the need for trailers on the weekend. We are all for keeping the clubs in their own buildings. I didn’t really hear any support for the new big building. We just really don’t understand what the City is trying to accomplish.”

This was the sentiment throughout the room. While each table had their own ideas of small additions like bird sanctuaries and better flood protection, major change was not a priority. When Viola brought the group back together to talk about writing down the big ideas for people to read as they walked around, the audience cheered at the words, “keep the status quo.”

What’s the Big Idea?

After the tables discussed their ideas, the audience was free to walk around and see what other people thought about. Out of all of the unique ideas, three big ones were talked about the most. The biggest idea was keeping the status quo. Those who wanted change weren’t asking for additions, but improvements. That leads into the other two concepts.

Each map had notes about preventing flooding, and better parking.

The meeting about what Gulfport Marina changes should or shouldn’t happen ended earlier than expected, but Stantec is getting ready to ask more from the community in the near future.

Protect The Beaches Campaign The Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber (TBBC) is partnering with St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, and Madeira Beach on the “Protect the Beaches” campaign. According to a press release from the TBBC, “this collaborative effort aims to educate and inspire both locals and visitors to uphold a few fundamental guidelines for beach etiquette.”

The campaign focuses on the enjoyment of the beaches while also encouraging responsible use of the area. While beachgoers are encouraged to bring their friends, pets need to stay at home. Hydration is important, but visitors can only drink alcohol at designated areas along the beaches. Fun in the sand is one of the best parts of the beach, but don’t leave toys, sandcastles, or holes in the sand.

“I walked the beach on March 15 and it wasn’t compliant,” said Reich.

“It’s the same scenario with the Sirata saying they’re compliant when they’re not.”

Reich is happy with the minor improvements she’s seen on the beach over the years, but the biggest problems are still looming. She says the two biggest issues that turtles face is improper lighting and permanent beach furniture. According to Reich, the Tradewinds has both. The press release states that one of the major changes is to replace the current beach furniture with lightweight, stackable furniture to quickly and easily remove it.

“I’m going to have a team of beach

ambassadors to report violations,” said Reich. “We need to have a record of these issues.”

Sea Turtle Protection Although it is separate from the “Protect the Beaches” campaign, the Tradewinds Resort is working to protect sea turtles on their beach. From May to July, loggerhead sea turtles make their way onto beaches to lay eggs. This is a delicate process, and many of the hatchlings do not survive.

According to a press release from Parks Public Relations, the resort is working with Sea Turtle Trackers to help turtles, as well as educate locals and tourists. This includes a decoy turtle nest to trick predators and educate the public, a weekly “sea turtle talk” for hotel guests, a donation box for Sea Turtle Trackers, and more.

Time to Live Croc-Safe

Floridians Guide to Florida’s American Crocodiles On March 10, an American crocodile bit an elderly man who capsized his boat in a marina within Everglades National Park. Even though this is a rare occurrence, it’s smart to educate yourself about how to live croc-safe alongside these large reptiles. However, the majority of these tips come down to common sense. So, to all the “Florida Men”, put your thinking caps on, because the crocs aren’t the problem — you are.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) are a species of crocodilian that live in brackish mangrove swamps, estuaries, and coastlines.

Once hunted to the brink of extinction in the U.S. for their hides, crocodile populations are increasing after many years of conservation work.

Now, the animals are beginning to reclaim their ancestral territory along the coasts of Florida. In terms of ecology, this is a massive win. Crocodilians hold a key position within coastal food webs, managing populations of prey species, and encouraging a healthy balance within the greater ecosystem.

However, these crocs face an uphill battle, with large-scale developments and boat traffic occupying the waterways and mangrove swamps their ancestors once called home.

Crocodile north of the Everglades 30 years ago was almost unheard of. If you happen to see one, admire them from afar. A lot of work went into the recovery of this species.

These reptiles are intelligent, robust creatures seeking to survive in the midst of immense human pressure.

They’re not the brutish monsters needing to be conquered.

Human-Croc Conflict This is where the issue arises. Similar to that of alligators, crocodiles that are too habituated with people begin to change their behavior. When people think they can “do the thing Crocodile Dundee did in that one movie,” not only will you look stupid, but it’s the animal that will pay the ultimate price. Keep your distance between you and the crocs, or any wild animal for that matter. Along with this, proper water etiquette is vital. Read signs posted near marinas and canals. If these animals are present, you must respect their space. If you’re really feeling swimming but can’t respect the wildlife, find a pool.

And to all the social media influencers and self-appointed animal whisperers, I know how tempting it is to try

to get close-up photos of the crocs, or even worse – try to touch it. Leave it to the professionals. You’ll only harm yourself and the crocodile.

Crocs are Florida’s Future The Sunshine State is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles coexist. Many people don’t realize how close we were to losing crocs from Florida waterways. Florida’s crocodilian recovery is a testament to not only their resilience, but to the dedication of skilled researchers looking to understand and preserve these animals.

Around the world crocodilians face a plethora of human-caused pressures. Habitat loss, overhunting, and lack of public support push crocodilians to the brink across the globe. We as Floridians have a chance to serve as an example of how to live croc-safe with a population beginning to rebound. Instead of filling the narrative with fear, let’s educate each other on how to responsibly live alongside these complex creatures.

“A candidate is not allowed to run or campaign as part of a political party,” said Carrico. “They are allowed to state their personal political affiliation, but they can’t run as part of that party.”

Of all the things St. Petersburg and Gulfport have to offer, the Pinellas Trail is a favorite. St. Pete is Super Cool plans on making it more popular with the St. Pete Sunday Market. Shopping, eating, and exercise will all come together on the third Sunday of every month.

Moving down the trail, visitors pass more than 30 Pinellas creators.

A bit further down the trail are some local favorite food trucks. More than 100 vendors will line up on the Pinellas Trail behind the ArtsXchange building.

To make this possible, the Warehouse Arts District (WADA) is partnering with St. Pete is Super Cool (SPSC).

WADA is, “a nonprofit organization centered around uplifting the artists of the Warehouse Arts District and the community at large,” a press release from SPSC reads. WADA works with ArtsXchange, a collective of artists in the area, to bring their art to the public.

“St. Pete is Super Cool was founded by locals for locals, on the principle of community first and we have worked hard to foster opportunities for everyone in our community to succeed,” according to the press release.

Aimee Kosta, Executive Director of Operations Heather DeFazio, chair of the GMC, said she and the team expressed excitement for Kosta’s position with the GMC. Kosta officially starts April 1.

“Her passion for community development and proven track record of strategic leadership make her the ideal candidate to lead our organization into its next chapter of growth and success,” DeFazio said.

Kosta has experience in community engagement and strategic leadership, according to a GMC press release. Her position will allow her to bring an elevated dynamic to the GMC. The Executive Director of Operations plans and implements new initiatives to support Gulfport businesses to grow the city’s economy. Kosta will be in charge of “development and execution of marketing and promo-

tional campaigns to raise awareness of Gulfport’s vibrant business landscape,” according to the GMC. “I have so many ideas,” Kosta said.

“I’m excited to come up with new ideas and ways to bring small business information to the chamber and our members.”

She said she wants the GMC to be seen as an “active chamber” where small businesses can reach out and ask for help and resources instead of closing their shops.

Kosta will collaborate with business owners, community organizations, and government officials. This communication allows her to advocate for policies and programs benefiting Gulfport businesses. Along with this, she will manage membership services and engagement strategies to ensure GMC members.

“We are so glad to have Aimee back,” Vice Chair Stacey Purcell said.

“I just know it’s gonna be nothing but good things. She has so much good energy.”

In Plein Sight The GMC celebrates the talents of Gulfportians and artists in the area with this annual plein air event.

In Plein Sight runs March 27 to April 3 for artists 18 years and older. Participants create captivating paintings inspired by the natural beauty of Gulfport.

Registered artists have four canvases they must complete before April 3. Each artist chose their

painting locations and schedules in advance. Visitors can view the final paintings April 5 during the First Friday ArtWalk in the Village Courtyard (2908 Beach Blvd. S., Gulfport).

“Come and support our local artists and see all the artwork and all the time they put into it,” Kosta said.

“It really is a representation of everything that’s great about Gulfport. There’s a reason people love to come here. There’s a reason our artists love to paint it.”

New Welcome Center The Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce moved its welcome center from Beach Boulevard to Gulfport Boulevard in November. On March 21, the GMC held a mixer and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new location.

This new 900-square-foot location is a major upgrade compared to the previous 300-square-foot welcome center. The space allows for

A recent press release stated that this ceremonial event provided an “opportunity for members and guests to network, celebrate, and learn more about the GMC’s initiatives for the upcoming year.”

“We are proud to unveil our new location and look forward to showcasing the GMC’s commitment to supporting local businesses,” said DeFazio.

Purcell said the event was more like a meet-and-greet along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. She said they provided food, drinks, and music in the welcome center’s courtyard.

“We had a great turnout; it was packed,” said Purcell. “Our board members and some City council members came in there. Some people who don’t own a business yet but they’re thinking of having one were in there.”

The GMC said the welcome center will include “shared desk areas, access to printers and copiers, and a dedicated conference room for meetings and presentations.”

While its title may reference the beloved annual dog show, do not go to Westminster at Urbanite expecting to see a parade of adorable pooches. A dog, mostly unseen, does play a central role in the play, but he’s merely the fulcrum for a comic culture clash that devolves into all-out war.

Surprise! It’s a Puppy!

We meet Pia (Deyki Rongé) and Tim (Jonathan Fielding) as they contemplate the new arrival in their suburban backyard: a very big and, we soon learn, very aggressive canine. Surprise! It’s a two-monthsearly birthday gift from Pia’s friend Krys (Alex Pelletier), who has shown up unbidden with the dog and her latest questionable partner, Beau (Gregg Weiner).

At first, politeness prevails. Playwright Brenda Withers has a knack for uncomfortable conversation, with loaded silences calibrated beautifully here by Director Summer Wallace and her cast. Fielding

in particular is hilariously on point as the nebbishy every-guy trying to make nice, while Weiner’s murderous deadpan as Beau suggests a barely contained menace. Pelletier’s Krys is at once ditzy and controlling, while Rongé moves effectively from smilingly up-tight to utterly frustrated.

You may wonder, as I did at first, why Pia and Tim don’t immediately say, ‘No, we don’t want your damn dog. Go away.’ But it becomes clear that there’s a lot more roiling beneath these four characters’ relationships than we first understand, harking back to the shared past and divergent paths of success-oriented Pia and free-spirited Krys. Beau’s ominous pronouncements about property and freedom stoke the flames.

“How about, maybe the problem isn’t a dog in a yard,” Beau opines.

“Maybe the problem is having a problem with a dog in a yard. Maybe the problem is: Yards.”

The conversation reels hysterically into nature vs. nurture, poverty and

class, action vs. inaction, Germans and genes and freedom and yes, dog shows. That’s a lot, maybe too much, for one play to handle. But the arguments arise out of the real absurdities (or absurd realities?) of the situation. And the cast navigates the misunderstandings and accusations (both veiled and unveiled) with elan. And there’s one moment, an extended aria of sorts by the ultimately fed-up Tim, that’s a tour de force for Fielding.

Kudos to the creative team for Tim and Pia’s upscale living room (a beautifully detailed design by Jeffrey Weber with props by Tori Leonetti-Heikenfeld); the spot-on costumes by Alison Gensmer; and to the lighting and sound by Ethan Vail and Alex Pinchin, respectively.

And special props to Pinchin’s wellplaced barks — and booms.

Carol Ann Valdes 11-04-1944 to 03-17-2024 Carol Ann Valdes of Gulfport passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024. She was 79 years young. Carol was born Nov. 4, 1944 in Memphis, TN. After several moves she finally settled in St. Petersburg in 1973 where she met Robert Valdes, the two married in 1977 on Treasure Island. On July 3, 1979, Carol gave birth to her son Kevin. Carol is survived by her son Kevin, daughter-in-law Brianne, and granddaughter Kaylea, as well as her brothers Harold, Thomas, and Ronald.

A Fourth Grader’s Community Service Project As part of a school project, Dylan Black, 10, decided to raise money for the St. Pete Beach Public Library to purchase an interactive light-up board for the kid’s area.

Dylan is a fourth grader at Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School.

Her teacher, Jennifer Kellie, assigned students a community service project.

“I just wanted to help the library because I love the library,” Dylan said.

For the past five years, Dylan and her family routinely visited the St. Pete Beach Public Library. She and her mom Emily met and brainstormed project ideas with Library Director Betcinda Kettells. They decided to bring an interactive experience to the library.

“I thought this would be perfect.

Dylan and her mom loved the idea,” Kettells said. “We’ll be the first ones in Florida to have purchased one of these, so I’m told.”

Dylan’s Fundraising Journey From March 1 to April 1, Dylan made it her mission to raise as much money for the “Light Up Your Library” project.

According to Dylan’s GoFundMe page, the goal amount is $16,700. At the publishing time, Dylan raised $9,327 through GoFundMe. Dylan made informative flyers to hand out and bookmarks for library

visitors. Kettells said the library has a donation box and they’ve promoted the project on social media.

“Growing with the community is really cool and showing people that they can help the community by giving as little as $1,” Dylan said.

Emily said Dylan gained confidence and the community’s response is great. Her dad Stanley said Dylan went door-to-door in the neighborhood and at the Corey Avenue Sunday Market on March 24. She raised around $500.

“For her to utilize this community service project to support something that she has passion for is awesome,” Emily said.

Light Up Your Library The light-up board is about five feet wide and three-and-a-half feet tall, according to Kettells. She said the Friends of the Library will collect the money at the end of the month to purchase the board.

“Our electronic toys are handson toys rather than just staring at a screen,” Kettells said. “It [the light-up board] has circles that you can turn until you get the color that you want.”

She said the goal is to encourage kids to enjoy their library time and feel comfortable there.
