Independent Politics and Party Loyalty About three years ago, I changed my voter registration status for the first time since I became eligible to vote in 1989, my senior year of high school. Making that change felt good, like setting down cumbersome baggage I’d been carrying for too long. I replaced the “D” on my voter registration card with “NPA”. In Florida, NPA stands for “No Party Affiliation” or what most of us would refer to as Independent.

My values haven’t changed. I still care about the same things I have always cared about, and that list has only expanded with age and experience. Preservation of nature and the environment, social justice and equality, fiscal responsibility, improved and historically/culturally accurate education, accountability in public service, combatting corporate greed, and striving for governance based in integrity, civility, cooperation, and problem solving.

That last one, increasingly hard to come by in today’s political climate, is why I left the party system. There is no home for me in either the Republican or Democratic Party. As musician Darrell Scott would say, “You left me, I didn’t leave you.”

The battle between these groups has moved from the necessary one of vigorously disagreeing over ideology, legislation and where the money is spent to a relationship marred by vicious hostility, hateful rhetoric, dishonesty and just plain ugly behavior. The party struggle is no longer about how best to serve America and her people, about solving the significant looming problems our nation faces, but rather mercilessly beating an opponent at any cost. No one is fixing the leaks in the boat if all our energy is focused on blowing holes in it. We are all the victims of this internal war.

Independent politics and party loyalty: Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson’s Mayor’s Corner.

The aggression and toxicity we see in our campaigns, elections and daily governmental actions today make the Bush/Gore contest seem quaint and congenial by comparison. The disregard for decorum and professionalism we are experiencing is akin to seeing people having a road rage brawl at an intersection, while the rest of us — ambulances and school busses included — are stuck in the traffic jam, hoping to get on with our work and our lives.

These contagious tactics have thoroughly bled from the state and federal levels to our local campaigns and elections. We have allowed, in many ways embraced, all the worst elements of higher-level politics. Our council, school board, and county commission meetings have become rife with personal attacks, threats, disrespectful exchanges, and opinion presented as fact. Many candidates sling mud from catapults, more interested in tearing down a rival than speaking to their own vision and accomplishments. We drag partisan issues from beyond our jurisdiction into our nonpartisan city halls, dis-

tracting from the work of keeping our municipalities afloat. We forget that we are neighbors.

Parties ask us for loyalty oaths, whereas we should be asking them to promise good, admirable, and reasonable candidates. Both parties have allowed the extreme fringes of their constituency to dominate the show. Both parties are guilty of propagating endless bickering and prideful inflexibility at the cost of seeing our urgent challenges fester. They tell us to vote for the party, while we are supposed to disregard the quality of the person. They are both responsible for driving a wedge between us. It has grown so abysmal that good people do not want to participate in the process, whether simply speaking up at a meeting or running for office, because it puts a target on their back and potentially places their business or families in harm’s way.

Like you, I have watched the political process and the bar for elected officials deteriorate.

I have worked with many Democrats and Republicans during my 15 years on Gulfport City Council. I

have seen the best and, sadly, the worst of both parties. I have voted at every level for people that I was deeply enthusiastic about, and those that I simply saw as the lesser of two evils. What I have learned is that I will always choose the character of the person over the letter on their voter ID card.

This is especially true at the local level. I tell you in truth, many of the people who cemented my departure from party politics are folks I have worked with directly right here in Gulfport and Pinellas County. In fairness, there are many good and dedicated people in office from the top down. I cannot imagine the frustration of that working environment for people who ran because they wanted to make positive changes. My hat is off to those. who keep slogging through the mire because they believe in a better way. I also know and work with plenty of these people, and they are the light that has kept me going politically for the last decade and a half.

Some might say that being an NPA is fence sitting. I would argue that purple people, the majority of moderates caught in the middle, are corralled between two fences erected to the extreme right and left. They are easy to forget because we don’t hear much from the reasonable middle very often. They aren’t flashy enough for the juicy

A New Era for Lincoln Cemetery In 1926, a grave marker company established Lincoln Cemetery in Gulfport. Borne of segregation and pushing the Black community out of the city and into small, neglected communities, the nearly nine-acre lot serves as the final resting place for more than 6,000 bodies, most of them Black. Now, the cemetery is returning to Black hands. Cross and Anvil, an organization associated with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church, will take over caretaker duties.

History of Lincoln Cemetery More than 1,000 of the graves belong to veterans. One of the graves belongs to Chester James Sr., a prominent civil rights activist who dedicated his life to the Black community through the NAACP and helping Black Americans register to vote. He received many awards, including the distinguished service award from the NAACP and the Gold Pin from president Lyndon B. Johnson.

Through the nearly 100 years of existence, many owner transitions, and downright abandonment, many of the burial records are missing or destroyed. In the 1950s, the cemetery began to decline. After the owners weren’t able to collect enough money to maintain the area, it fell to Florida’s weeds and water.

In 2009, a caretaker stepped up.

Sarlie McKinnon III took control of the cemetery and established a nonprofit to maintain it. Unfortunately, by 2012, McKinnon stepped back and relinquished responsibility for the cemetery, forcing the City to maintain it.

Just a few years later, a Gulfport resident took an interest in the area.

gan with trash cleanup and general maintenance, but by 2017 she was the primary caretaker. Gray, a white woman, began her work by cleaning up garbage and uncovering tombstones. While she was praised for her efforts by some, others brought up issues.

Gray started a nonprofit corporation, Lincoln Cemetery Society, Inc. She had private conversations with the property’s owner, and quickly acquired a deed to Lincoln Cemetery. During this time, Greater Mt. Zion AME Church had already started creating a management plan, and were “caught off guard” by the sudden change of ownership, according to a 2020 article by James Schnur.

Lincoln Cemetery Society couldn’t raise enough money to maintain the area, and the City of Gulfport assumed much of the maintenance.

The City also bought her tools for yard work, but they were quickly stolen, according to Paul Ray, Gulfport’s Ward III councilmember.

Despite the challenges, the City recognized Gray’s commitment to Lincoln Cemetery, and Gulfport as a whole.

“Vanessa did an amazing job,” Ray said. “It’s a big job that requires a full-time team. It’s truly quite commendable. There are liens on the property from mowing the grass that make it near-impossible to get grants and the donations she got were pretty limited, so she paid for most of the work.”

Lincoln Cemetery’s Future Reverend Clarence Williams from the Greater Mt. Zion AME is working closely with Ray and the rest of the City to build a better future for the cemetery.

“I’m glad this is resolved after 20 years,” said Ray. “Reverend Williams already reached out to us to ask about a committee to oversee caretaking. He wants transparency and community involvement, which is exactly what we want.”

New Madeira Beach Charter Amendment With less than a month left, voters across Pinellas County are gearing up for elections. On Mar. 19, residents of Madeira Beach will hit the polls and fill out their ballots. When it comes to the City Commission, there isn’t a race. Both David Tagliarini (District 1) and Ray Kerr (District 2) were the only candidates to apply during the qualifying period. Both incumbents will be sworn into office at the Board of Commissioners Special Meeting on Mar. 27 at 5:30 p.m.

This starts a new two-year term for each of them.

Madeira Beach Charter Amendment When it comes to the municipal elections, the important part is a new Madeira Beach charter amendment.

Sirata Redevelopment in St. Pete Beach St. Pete Beach’s sand, restaurants, and hotels may be part of the reason almost 15 million people visit Pinellas County every year. Despite this, not everyone is a fan of new hotels and resorts coming in. As with most City commission general meetings, the Feb. 27 St. Pete Beach City commission meeting started at 6 p.m. Unlike most recent city commission meetings, it ended at 11:27 p.m. The agenda was short, consisting of audience comments and the consent agenda, but the thing that made it long was the quasi-judicial hearing on Resolution 2023-21, which looked at a conditional usage permit for the Sirata to build new hotels.

Looking at the New Hotels on Sirata Property The plan to redevelop the Sirata property includes the existing hotel; a 290-room, 10-story J.W. Marriott directly north of the existing building; and a 130-room, eight-story Hampton Inn south of the Sirata. Both proposed hotels have rooftop features ranging from outdoor music to drinks.

gin the hearing and hear from residents. Since they already had time to speak, the City Attorney began the audience comments section of the meeting by saying that the comments could not be about the hearing, as the public comments section for that has already closed.

The first audience comment came from Tom Rask, who filed a lawsuit against the City of St. Pete Beach, alleging violations of public records laws and Florida Government in the Sunshine Law. Rask’s allegations related to the discussion of the Sirata redevelopment; Rask said people weren’t given a reasonable opportunity to speak.

Rask accused Mayor Adrian Petrila of bias.

The Gabber Newspaper will follow this lawsuit as it unfolds.

Hearing Begins Despite the City Attorney’s request, multiple audience members found a way to indirectly express their opinions.

“Development and redevelopment can be celebrated, but we want it done right,” said Jolynn Lawson, the director of Protect St. Pete Beach.

Theresa Shepstead brought up how the City and the public should be able to see finances and the

backgrounds of developers.

“In any business transaction, it is important to know your partner,” said Shepstead.

Finally, it came time for the commission to discuss. For the following five hours, the commission discussed wind studies and economic benefit to the City, among other things. The commission decided to accept the permit with conditions.

They went through each point of the plan to make sure the language reflected what they wanted.

Conditions The City presented a total of 50 conditions to the developers. The City changed 17 of these conditions at the meeting.

Condition 8 added language about the design and installation of rooftop telecommunications equipment. Originally, the resolution said the applicant needed the signed opinion of a licensed engineer for installation, but the City added that it can be a telecommunications lessee. The goal is to preserve signal strength and quality that could get disrupted by the new hotels.

The City added condition 9, moving all the following conditions up.

This says the applicant must conduct a full wind study before building the hotels to make sure there is no change in wind comfort.

Condition 19 makes a partnership between the City and the developer to make a beach walk next to the hotels. The City will design the beach walk, and the applicant will pay most of the construction costs, minus funds obtained by the City from grants or public funding.

Condition 21 looks at consistency and modernization. The three hotels will all have a similar paint color scheme on the buildings and parking garages. Along with this, the modernization of the Sirata includes updating trim and removing some roof details.

Condition 22 states that each hotel can only display one monument sign.

Condition 23 says that the applicant cannot apply for or introduce

any new long-term beach amenities. This is everything from inflatable structures to stages. The City allows temporary structures for approved events.

More Conditions Condition 24 prevents the applicant from offering scooter or other “individual micro mobility device” rentals on the property.

Condition 25 says the applicant must work with the City to allow for storage of City vehicles in the parking garages during a hurricane watch.

Condition 28 requires the applicant to make a commitment to potable water use reduction.

Condition 31 makes it so that LEED v4 BD+C Hospitality and Silver will be the minimum criteria for green building standards at the hotels.

Condition 32 looks at water usage.

prove water usage for the Marriott’s waterfall wall, and other outdoor water features.

Condition 33 says all pathways, parking spaces, and other paved surfaces must use permeable pavers, asphalt or concrete or turf block.

Condition 34 has the applicant installing green roofs or another technique to improve thermal performance. This doesn’t apply to areas of the rooftop used for guest spaces or for maintenance purposes.

Condition 35 says the Marriott’s porte cochere unloading area has a solid barrier that reduces the sound and visual impact on the adjacent SeaMark Condominium.

Condition 42 has the applicant installing canopy trees next to the sidewalk. These trees are planted in the ground, unless it would cause an issue with sidewalk utilities.

These trees will be in aboveground planters. Trees will get planted every 30 feet. If the planting isn’t viable, the applicant must install at least one shade structure for every 100 feet sidewalk.

Nanoparticles: Florida’s Secret Agricultural Weapon?

As our global population grows, so does our need for food. However, as the climate crisis continues to unfold, growing crops is becoming increasingly difficult. To combat this, soil and agricultural scientists at the University of Florida are finding new ways to bring life into struggling fields. One such way: carbon nanoparticles.

Overuse of agricultural fields, drought, and deforestation to make more farmland all decrease soil fertility. These conditions also increase the rate of desertification, or fertile farmland transforming into seemingly unusable land resembling a desert.

According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, desertification affects more than 200 million people globally.

The threat of decreased soil fertility and desertification, if unchecked, can lead to large scale famine and climate migration.

From the Lab to Florida’s Fields These troubling issues are currently being intensely studied by international researchers at the University of Florida. Their objective: How can we make land that was once thought of as unusable for farming into a productive landscape to feed our growing communities? With the majority of the state’s soil being highly nutrient poor sand, Florida is ideal for studying how to make soil more productive in sustainable ways.

“Sandy soils actually make up around 31% of the area of the world,” said post-doctoral research Associate Dr. Xioaping Xin. “[Sandy soil] has a very low water and nutrient holding capacity, which makes it easier for nutrients to be leached after the farmers apply fertilizer.”

This means farmers would have to apply more water and fertilizer for less-than-ideal results. To counteract this, Dr. Xin and her research partners are studying ways to increase soil holding capacity while adding beneficial nutrients.

“Nanotechnology is a new thing, especially for agriculture,” said Xin. “So, there is still a long way to go.”

Yet Xin and other members of the research team are hopeful for the future of nanotechnology research in Florida agriculture (and other areas). Throughout the next several years, they hope to discover more about how nanoparticles can change how we treat degraded land.

“We are very interested in ex-

ploring the optimal application rates and limitations of these nano-products for a diverse range of crops and environmental conditions,” said Xin. “Also, the longterm impact of on soil health and sustainability.”

The Science of Nanoparticles Their team began to see promising results when they explored the use of bio-functionalized carbon nanoparticles as soil additives.

These negatively charged particles can also hold onto positively charged nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. They can also get spread across a large area. This allows for applied water and fertilizers to not seep through the soil as quickly. This allows for more efficient application and less runoff.

Through the use of these nanoparticles, researchers can add carbon to the soil. Carbon is naturally less abundant in sandier soil — but vital for plant growth.

This allows for better growing conditions for a variety of food crops.

Overall, findings show that nanoparticles improve soil health, holding capacity, and increasing nutrient content within the crops.

With a few weeks until Mar. 19, The Gabber Newspaper reached out to Treasure Island candidates Richard Harris and Arden Dickey. We asked them about their candidacy and backgrounds, and what they hope to achieve if elected.

How Long Have You Lived in Treasure Island?

Richard Harris: 37 years.

Arden Dickey: My family moved to Florida in 1962. I’ve lived in Florida ever since. From 1978 on, I spent every Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day weekends in Treasure Island. My wife and I bought a condo on Sunset Beach in 2007. We bought our current house on Blind Pass Drive in 2012. It became our primary residence in 2016.

Why Are You Running for Treasure Island District IV? Harris: I want to improve our infrastructure, stop the waste of taxpayer money, and make sure we have efficient beach renourishment and responsible development. Promoting safety and maintenance of our parks, and amending Ordinance 2022-16 that currently allows motorized vehicles on sidewalks.

Dickey: I care very much about the quality of life we have here. Now that I am retired, I have the time, energy, passion and financial expertise to dedicate to the City and to our residents to ensure that Treasure Island always maintains its unique character and charm.

What Other Public Service Experiences Do You Have?

Harris: I’ve spent 10 years on the planning and zoning board, with five years as the chairman. The same span of time for the Local Planning Agency. I’ve been on the Code Enforcement Board for 12 years, with the last six as the chairman. I’m a member of the Sunset Beach Com-

munity Association Board for five years, serving as the president, vice president, and treasurer in that time.

I coordinated the placement of 50+ memorial benches in the city.

Dickey: I have been a volunteer ombudsman director for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves (ESGR) for 31 years, helping National Guard troops and military reservists when they have problems with their civilian employers. I served on the Broward Community College Foundation Board for many years as the chair of the Funds Allocation committee. And I did volunteer work with United Way of Miami-Dade County for many years as well. More recently, I have been an active member of the Sunset Beach Community Association since 2020.

What Do You Love Most About How the City Operates?

Harris: We have really good basic services. The roads and sewers work well. Each district is represented in the commission.

Dickey: I believe the Mayor and the Commission try very hard to be transparent in their actions. I believe the City does a good job, via their website, of keeping residents informed about city projects, upcoming events and meetings. I believe City staff are accessible and responsive. And I think our current City commissioner for District 4, Beth Wetzel, does a very good job of communicating with residents about upcoming meetings and the

agenda items for those meetings.

If, elected, I intend to continue with Beth’s methods of keeping our residents informed and engaged.

What Would You Like To Change About How the City Functions?

Harris: The main thing to focus on is what makes Treasure Island great: our beaches. We need to monitor the beaches regularly, and have a program to make sure we don’t lose our beach. This means regularly renourishing the beach and make an emergency plan for hurricanes. Idalia was terrible for us. Pinellas County rebuilt it, and then December storms ruined that.

Dickey: I would like to see the process for resident speakers at the City Commission meetings change.

Currently, a resident is given five minutes to speak out on non-agenda items. Frequently, residents ask questions to the Commission, which often go unanswered. I would like to see the City Commissioners or City staff answer those questions as they are asked in real time, unless they require further research. In those cases, I would like to see the answers to those questions published in the minutes of the meetings or some other public forum.

Moreover, I would like to see the City use consultants less frequently, and ask for volunteer help from our residents, many of whom have expertise in the very areas which the City is using the services of consultants.

What happens when a kids toy store and a mobile coffee shop come together? You get Run & Play Kids Cafe.

This coffee shop isn’t like any ordinary cafe: It’s a kids cafe. Run & Play Kids Cafe combines the joy and fun of an indoor play area with a coffee shop for parents and kids alike to enjoy.

Bean Wandering and RunRun Kids Store partnered to create this family-friendly environment. Run & Play Kids Cafe plans to open by Apr. 2 at their Central Avenue location.

RunRun Kids Store owner Jess Garvin said “it was so punishing” when she and Hannah Rewarts, Bean Wandering owner, announced the kids cafe.

“People were like, ‘Good. Kids don’t belong in coffee shops. Get them out’,” Garvin said.

She said bringing her kids to a coffee shop feels like you’re interrupting someone’s work-from-home office space.

“There was no reason to open this besides I was tired of it for myself and I wanted to create that space,” Garvin said.

Both, Garvin and Rewarts, are moms looking to make their parenting lives a little easier. They expressed excitement about finally having a place where they and their kids feel welcomed.

“It’s going to be that indoor space that people can bring their kids and not have to be outside roasting,” Rewarts said. “You can drink, you can have breakfast, you could have lunch.”

Mom Collaboration The RunRun Kids Store opened in September 2023, offering durable toys and adorable clothes orga-

nized by age. Garvin said kids can play with toys and try on clothes to see if they really like those items.

The cafe is Bean Wandering’s physical location. Rewarts began this business as a hobby in June 2023. Bean Wandering operates out of a mini-trailer, selling canned lattes. She makes the drink then cans the coffee right in front of customers. It’s a quick come-andgo coffee station with unique flavor combinations.

The cafe will have hot and cold caffeinated drinks, mocktails, and drinks for kids. Rewarts said they have two St. Pete roasters, Look Alive Coffee and Home Coffee Brand LLC. Play Area There will be an open ply space in the back of the cafe, gated by age group. Parents can watch their kids from the walls surrounding the play area. Similar to an ordinary cafe, there are countertops and tables for parents to work at or to simply chat over coffee with friends as their kids play. The cafe eventually plans to host parties in their back party room.

Toys found at the RunRun Kids Store and a massive wooden playhouse will be in the play area.

The cafe will be open every day except Mondays.

arts Florida Beach Towns, Coffee, and Murder ‘A Bean To Die For’ A Book To Die For Sometimes book publishers make mistakes.

This is the case with Crooked Lane’s decision to not continue Tara Lush’s Coffee Lovers Mystery series, because from her first book (Grounds for Murder) to her fourth and most recent, A Bean To Die For, readers have cheered for Lana Lewis, a recovering journalist who runs her family’s coffee shop. That coffee shop is part of the Devil’s Beach community, and Devil’s Beach is a fictional amalgam of Gulfport and Sanibel Island.

A Bean To Die For Has It All Florida beach towns. Strong coffee. Murder. What’s not to love?

I have no idea why anyone would think this isn’t a great series, because I haven’t talked to a single reader who hasn’t loved Tara’s books. In A Bean To Die For, she continues the adventures of barista who seems to stumble upon dead bodies so frequently one would think it was her job. There’s no question cozy mysteries have a formula, and Lush has mastered it. Blood, guts, and gore offstage? Check.

Kisses that fade to black, leaving the racier bits to the reader’s imagination? Check. A woman protagonist who does some amateur detective work? There’s nobody as, ahem, curious as a trained journalist. Small community where everyone seems to know one another? Devil’s Beach is, indeed, that.

It’s not enough to know the formula, though. An author has to tell an engaging story, and Lush does that. With Florida as a spectacular backdrop, each novel in the series — and A Bean To Die For is no exception — paints a colorful picture of not only the murder, but the irreverent charm of a small town like Gulfport or Sanibel. Community garden drama? A funnel cake festival shut down by lubbers? Stealth

vegan lasagne? To an outsider — a non-Floridian — this may all sound like something Lush created after one too many spiked lattes, but to a Floridian, it’s just Wednesday.

Things between Lana and her hot police chief boyfriend go to the next level in this book: He introduces her to his Cuban mother. Do we hear wedding bells in their future?

The thing is, we may never know.

Crooked Lane told Lush A Bean To Die For would be the final book they would publish in the series.

Lush said on an Instagram post she knew the sales weren’t where the publisher wanted the sales to be.

Because the publisher has canceled the series, Lush can, if she wishes, self-publish more in the series.

That’s more work for her — and more expensive. Now it will be on Lush to pay an editor, a cover designer, and any marketing expenses.

But Lush isn’t new to self-publishing; before she left her career with the Associated Press (like Lana, Lush is a recovering journalist), she researched the best way to self-publish her romances, and she’s done so with those (FYI, those are definitely not cozies) for a while now. She’s also self-publishing her Crescent Moon Mysteries (we reviewed Eat Pray Hex in January).

So let’s hope A Bean To Die For isn’t the last cup in the proverbial pot, and that Lush’s beloved characters will return for many more books.

The tradition began in Orlando, circa 2005 from the mind of organizer Kelly Stevens. Stevens brought the show to Tampa for the first time in 2009. It went on to make a name in downtown spots and Ybor City long before the area could be described as “booming”.

Stevens passed away in 2021. Her daughter — Sloan Waranch — is now the proud organizer of the colossal event.

“I grew up watching my mom do this, and I watched my mom bring it to Tampa,” Waranch said. “I’m proud to say it’s the first year we’re making it to St. Pete. Personally, I love the vibe [of St. Pete] and it’s just got a really cool art district.”

Local Nudes Most of the artists at Nude Nite are from Orlando and beyond. But, St. Pete locals may recognize a handful of native works throughout the weekend.

Julie Haura, a St. Pete Beach painter, was drawn to the event as soon as she heard the name.

“I mainly paint in black and white, mainly women, and I don’t know how to paint clothes,” Haura said with a laugh.

“I paint my emotions ... this venue is going to be great for non-mainstream artists. In this area, you see a lot of manatees and pelicans.”

“I’m trying not to give too much away, this being the first one in the area,” Waranch said. “But we have aerialists, burlesque dancers, and one very special act.”

Haura is showing two of her blackand-white acrylics at Nude Nite, both featuring bare women in various poses.

“More than anything, I hope people feel something,” Haura said.

“Take a second look, whether you like it or not.”

While classic sea life paintings may be hard to come by at Nude Nite, not every artist’s collection contains something Instagram would immediately flag.

St. Pete’s Samantha Churchill is known for her sculptures made from aluminum wire. She first collected her wire materials from the construction zone of the Tampa SkyPointe Condominiums — back in 2007.

This year, Churchill has a handful of hanging wire-bound sculptures at the event.

Around the time she first began creating wire art, Churchill participated in one of the first Nude Nites in Tampa. She stayed with the event ever since.

“It started at Armature Works, before it was Armature Works,” Churchill said. “It was packed, with loads of people in these little run-down buildings.”

She’s happy to see the event make it to St. Pete, and she has a message for newbies: “Don’t be turned off by the nude art; it’s just nude art,” Churchill said.

“People may be worried it’s going to be some deviant situation. But I tell everyone, it’s just a good time.”

Nude Nite is a 21-and-up event featuring fine art, performances, and live body painting.

Organizers would like to keep an air of mystery about exactly what those performances are. But, chances are, they involve the human form.

“I’m trying not to give too much away, this being the first one in the area,” Waranch said. “But we have aerialists, burlesque dancers, and one very special act.”

1 Chick•1 Bro Café Bistro in Gulfport Gulfport welcomed its newest restaurant to its already delicious lineup: 1 Chick•1 Bro Café Bistro. This family-owned-and-operated Latin eatery on 49th Street offers a tasty mix of Venezuelan cuisine. You’ll find everything from empanadas and arepas to bowls and tres leches, complete with café con leche and cortadito on the menu. The owners, Xiomara and Raoul, will welcome you in and make you feel like family. If you’re unsure of what to order, I recommend their arepas. They’re out-of-this-world delicious, and full of fresh ingredients.

Never heard of an arepa? They’re a type of cornmeal-based sandwich that’s a staple in Central and South America, particularly in Venezuela and Columbia. Once the dough is shaped, it’s often cooked on a griddle and then stuffed with meats, cheeses, and vegetables. Bonus: These yummy handhelds are gluten free!

The Arepas are Calling When you visit 1 Chick•1 Bro Café Bistro, come hungry. The menu has lots to offer and the portions (especially the arepas) are huge. I noshed on the Andino Patties with ground beef and rice ($3.75) and chicken empanadas ($4.50) as appetizers, not knowing just how massive my arepas would be. The #14 pulled pork arepa ($12.99) was stuffed with shredded pork, gouda cheese, tomatoes and bacon. The meat was fall-apart-tender and laced with flavor. It meshed perfectly with the shredded smoked gouda and bacon. The #18 veggie arepa ($11.25) is a combination of chickpeas, tofu, red onions, red pepper, raisins, and spinach, all tossed in an herb vinaigrette. It’s Xiomara’s recipe, and it’s both light and refreshing, as well as totally guilt-free.

The arepa must have weighed five pounds because there was so much chicken and creamy avocado, I almost needed a fork to devour it. Fair warning: There is no graceful way to eat one of 1 Chick•1 Bro’s arepas because they are chock full of ingredients.
