For Gulfport, the Pink Flamingo Home Tour is a spring staple that neither COVID-19 nor 2020 could keep down.

Each year a group of homeowners agrees to open their doors to tour-goers looking for inspiration.

On Saturday, Mar. 5, curious visitors will take over Gulfport’s Marina District and lead their own quest through 11 waterfront homes from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

It’s a way to connect, and a way to raise money for the Gulfport Merchants Chamber.

According to GMC treasurer Kelly Wright, it’s the biggest moneymaker the chamber hosts each year, historically beating out Gulfport’s staple Gecko World events.

When it’s not COVID season, that is.

“Typically we make about $15,000 each year and the overhead is very small,” Wright told The Gabber. “But this year and last year ticket sales have been slower.”

voices Get Rescued As a resident of Gulfport and an avid dog owner and advocate, I have always looked forward to Get Rescued. Although still a lively event, in past years, there was much more of an emphasis on (as the name states) rescuing dogs and other animals in need of homes. Over these last two years, it’s become a marketing event for vendors to sell their wares, from caramel popcorn to tie-dye shirts.

While there were booths with dog and animal products, there was nary an animal present to be rescued. Yes, there was one booth with dogs to be viewed and held, and applications to be placed and then processed, but for many an attendee looking for that possible new pet to join their family that day, they instead walked off with pamphlets on dog sitting, dog beds, dog treats, and other assorted nonlive dog items. A critical opportunity to introduce dogs and cats to possible new owners was lost! Some may argue that there is not enough time to

properly process applications. If that’s the case, then take 15 minutes to visit an animal shelter and meet the many dogs lingering as they wait for someone to consider giving them a home.

Can’t Get Rescued help make these matches? I would encourage the organizers to either rename this event or stay true to its original intention: Helping dogs/cats in need of forever homes “Get Rescued”. What a difference for those dogs and cats if they met their forever family on this day.

Gulfport Senior Center GEMS Driver a Drumming “Metrosexual Rocking Diva” LJ Harness has the persona of an old-school rock star who never takes off his shades, even when he’s at the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center.

From 1974-1986 Harness was the drummer for a rock band called Hoochie. They came from Indiana to Tampa Bay and opened at the Citrus Bowl for Aerosmith in front of an audience of 64,000 in 1979.

“I’m a metrosexual, rocking diva,” he said, “and I take ownership of it.”

Today, he spends a chunk of his time driving for GEMS, a city-run ride program operating out of the Senior Center.

“I’m very close with all my clients; I have an appreciation for the wisdom and the stories they have to share,” Harness said.

Back in the Day Even while attending his Indiana farm-town high school, Harness performed at bar venues as a drummer, practicing out of a converted school bus.

In the summer of 1974, his agent moved Hoochie to the Tampa Bay area.

“We were what you call weekend rock n’ roll warriors before that … quitting our jobs, quitting college, leaving our home turf,” Harness said. “I can honestly say that I’ve lived my dream.”

He quit Hoochie in 1990 and in turn, overcame an addiction problem. He went on to work for Cadillac as a salesperson, first in Sarasota and then Nevada.

He started working as a salesman for a Sarasota Cadillac dealership in 2003. He was offered a job in marketing for Cadillac in Nevada six years later. The Las Vegas scene was a glamorous one, Harness says. But much of his job involved intertwining Cadillac with local charities.

“It was emotional, getting to do something good after years of getting lost for a while,” Harness said.

but Harness’ heart lies with his community work.

It was in Nevada that Harness worked to create, and then began working on, the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program in Las Vegas.

But after 18 unforeseen years with Cadillac, he moved from Vegas to Gulfport to be near his mother.

Back on the Bus Soon after hitting town, Harness joined The Conspiracy – Band and later, JuxBox Heroz, both on the drums.

“Once I realized I was retired I kind of freaked out,” Harness said.

Despite playing two or three times a week, he was grappling with free time. Harness joined the gym at the Gulfport Senior Center and fell in love with the community.

When a position for a GEMS driver opened up more than two years ago, Harness jumped at the chance to work with the center.

“The opportunity to be around seniors is something I look forward to every day,” Harness said. “This service gives people the chance to have a life.”

Home Tour continued from cover doors this year, the chamber hopes to ramp up participation.

The tour includes everything from bungalows tucked away on side streets to modern mansion-types on the water.

“There’s a lot of pride and ownership here in Gulfport; everyone wants to put their personal flair on their home,” said Stacey Purcell, owner of Gulfport Realty. “It’s an artistic community, and the first thing people do when they come here is work on their homes.”

Gulfport Realty is one of the tour’s main sponsors in 2022.

It’s Purcell’s face that will smile at Saturday’s groups from a spot on the wristbands, and she’s no stranger to the home decorating scene.

“I wasn’t artistic before I came to Gulfport [but] right now I’m painting an antique door so I can distress it and turn it into a headboard,” Purcell added.

Aside from the tour including interiors and gardens this year, there’s also a change in transportation options.

Gulfport’s special events trolley is a tad wide to safely navigate through side streets without forbidding street parking, says Justin Shea, City of Gulfport Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor.

“It’s just too large to operate safely and we would need 75 plus ‘no parking’ signs on those side streets,” Shea said.

The couple finished building their tri-colored waterfront home in 2019.

It’s inspired by the modern work of American Architect Frank Lloyd Wright, says Kichler.

It’s also built to withstand a Category 5 Hurricane.

“We wanted to use cool colors and cool colors can become cold, or for lack of a better word, depressing,”

Kichler said. “That’s not the case here.”

Most of the flooring is turquoise, and the patio area overlooks the waters of Boca Ciega Bay. It’s the couple’s dream home, made sweeter by the fact that they lived in apartments and hotels for the two years it took to build.

“We decided to do the tour because we wanted to become a part of the community … and we wanted to support the Chamber,” Kichler said. “We chose Gulfport and we’re very happy with it.”

St. Pete Ice Cream Shop Mascot is Owner’s Alter Ego Without Scottie Freeman, there would be no Fat Lenny’s.

His words, not ours.

Scott Pfeifer is the man behind the soon-to-open rainbow ice cream shop, Fat Lenny’s, at 2148 49th St. S. Previously, Fat Lenny only reigned in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Now, the Fat Lenny’s world headquarters is based in St. Pete.

“The people are different down here; people are a bit more open,” Pfeifer said. “We couldn’t leave it once we got here. What you see out there, the rainbow, the purple, we saw it and felt it as soon as we got here.”

The purple shop is slated to open in mid-March, but Pfeifer’s not doing it alone. The shop’s mascot, a grinning black and white sketched boy, is what Pfeifer calls his “alter ego.”

He refers to Scottie and himself as “we.”

“Every spiritual book ever written talks about ‘oneness’; if we’re all one, then everything we’re putting out is ego. We decided to give him his own name, his own persona,” Pfeifer said.

“He’s an egomaniac.”

The cartoon character ran for Erie City Council in 2019 and wrote a scolding letter to the The Rotary Club of Erie before migrating to the Sunshine State.

“We had a vision of the shop next to our shop in Erie being a candy, toy and ice cream shop,” Pfeifer said. “The area we were in Erie was a very depressed one, and I wanted to bring another element to it.”

But not everyone wants to dive into ego death and the idea of singularity while they’re buying ice cream.

So, on the outside, Scottie Freeman is the funky, spunky character mascot for Fat Lenny’s.

Pfeifer’s ice cream shop won’t just

sell cold treats; it’ll sell toys, Delta 8 products, candy, and anything else that strikes interest in St. Petersburg.

“It’s [Fat Lenny’s] an art piece,” Pfeifer said. “I’m a conceptual artist, and the entire world is a stage. Isn’t that what a performer does?”

The concept artist hopes to eventually host weekly pride parades. The parades will be a blend of marching and dancing across the street. And afterwards, free ice cream.

It’s all in the works, but one thing for sure: Fat Lenny’s will make a splash in the St. Pete scene.

Grab a Kit and Reminisce

St. Pete Beach Library Offers Memory-Jogging Kits for Dementia Patients A “global emergency.” That’s what The Economist calls the increase in dementia patients. So when meternally.com, a company specializing in reminiscence therapy and memory kits for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s, reached out to Pinellas County libraries to see if any wanted to use their memory kits, Betcinda Kettells, the St. Pete Beach Library director, said yes.

“What we’re trying to do is to help caregivers of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, engage with their patients and give them something fun to talk about,” Kettells said. “We all know that dementia patients remember things from a long time ago, where they might not remember something from yesterday, and so this is about reminiscence therapy.”

Two kinds of memory kits sit on the shelf: favorite things and busy bottles. The favorite things kits include DVDs, activity cards, and photo cards (outdoors, animals, or autumn themed); these help caregivers tell stories to evoke memories of their loved one’s youth or past.

“I thought this would be a great

thing to have, especially in our community where we skew a little to the older demographic,” Kettells said, noting library patrons checked out books on Alzheimer’s and dementia in the past, and events based on caregiving for those with such diseases had great attendance rates.

A Flowery Past

Sunken Gardens Steps Back Into Its History

This summer, visitors to Sunken Gardens will see something new at the classic St. Pete attraction. Or rather, something old: A new History Center, devoted to telling the story of the 110-year-old site, will open in the restored building that once served as the park’s entrance. Inside, an exhibit will feature historic photographs and documents, home videos, and interviews with the family of George Turner, who bought the land in 1911 and, over three generations, transformed a shallow pond and sinkhole into a living work of art.

“We’re learning so much about the property that we didn’t know

before,” Jennifer Tyson, the center’s Education Coordinator, says. She’s overseen the remodel of the 440 square foot space and worked with volunteer archivists, including Turner’s granddaughter, to collect, catalog, and digitize historical materials.

Some of their best finds so far: the original lettering for “Turner’s Sunken Gardens,” seen on old postcards of the site and found intact, layered under on the building’s facade, and the multicolored “crazy” pattern that graces so many of the garden’s sidewalks emblazoned on the original cement floor.

“They did most of this stuff them-

selves,” Tyson says. “We see it in these old pictures, hear it in these old stories. They loved creating and making with their own hands.”

And of course, they also loved plants. Another revelation came through the love letters between George and his wife, Eula, where dreams of marital bliss mixed with visions of the earthly paradise they would build together.

“Their letters will say things like, ‘I can’t wait until we go and pick out trees for our grove’,” says Tyson. The exhibit highlights Eula’s role building the attraction. “She was doing programming, organizing tours, welcoming garden clubs. She was notorious for clipping flowers from the gardens to give to guests and take to events.”

The exhibit also showcases the community’s role in supporting Sunken Gardens, especially in 1999 when St. Pete residents agreed to a tax increase to help the City of St. Petersburg buy the attraction and preserve it.

“This place was almost a condominium!” exclaims Tyson, sweeping her hand past a verdant wall of royal palm and bougainvillea. “A key message I want people to take away with them is that it takes community involvement to preserve a place like this.”

Money for the 1940s-era entrance restoration, historical exhibits, plaza seating and an orchid arbor came from Florida’s Division of Historical Resources, the City of St. Petersburg, Penny for Pinellas and the Sunken Gardens Forever Foundation.

Gulfport Gets 15 New Tuskegee Crape Myrtles Near Lincoln Cemetery On Feb. 7 Gulfport welcomed some new plants to the city. The Gulfport Parks Department, under the city’s horticulturist Toffer Ross, added 15 Tuskegee Crape Myrtles near Lincoln Cemetery.

According to Ross, the City of Gulfport spearheaded an idea to “mass plant” new trees – mass plant meaning more than two trees get planted in one area at a time. Ross said her position gives her authority to choose where to plant new trees.

“I have a favorite species of crape myrtles that I use, depending on what size they’re going to grow to.

I knew I wanted a mid-level crape and I’ve always been fascinated with Lincoln Cemetery,” Ross said.

Her interest in the cemetery sparked when she took a position on the Historic Preservation Committee for Gulfport, as the idea of “historic preservation with regard to landscape architecture” enraptured her.

After serving on the committee, she soon became the chair.

“Back then, we did quite a bit of research on it. So I always view it very fondly and I wanted to do something to pay homage to its presence there.

So, when I started looking into varietals of crape myrtles that were new or hybrids, that’s when the Tuskegee hybrid jumped out at me,” Ross said.

The trees, now dormant, should bloom in three-four years, Ross said.

The Tuskegee Crape Myrtles are hybrid plants, meaning they were derived from another species. In this case, they come from the Tuscarora Crape Myrtle.

The trees do not technically reside on Lincoln Cemetery property, but “are all on the city of Gulfport easements,” Ross said.

Currently the Tuskegees remain dormant, but in three to four years they will decorate the white PVC fence bordering Lincoln Cemetery and the Pinellas Trail.

The word Tuskegee has Black history connotations – Ross made the association between the name and the Tuskegee Airmen – but added that “the occurrence of them being planted at the same time as Black History Month was purely coincidental. But I like that. I like that idea.”

In addition to planting Tuskegee Crape Myrtles in Lincoln Cemetery, Ross said she also introduced 36 other crape myrtles (Muskogee and Natchez species) to 49th Street South a few days after the Feb. 7 project.

Coastal Trailblazers and Madeira Pioneers Archibald and Welch on South Pinellas Beaches Albert Bertram Archibald and David Sewall Welch transformed the Gulf Beaches at a time when no permanent settlements existed between Pass-a-Grille and Indian Rocks. Long before Madeira Beach’s incorporation in May 1947, their vision shaped that city, as well as Treasure Island and the Redingtons.

Finding Treasure on the Island A Michigan native, “Bert” Archibald came to St. Petersburg in 1901 at age 16. After working for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, he operated a produce business downtown. When H. Walter Fuller purchased much of present-day Treasure Island for $800 in 1913, Archibald bought one share. Before 1920, he had established his Coney Island resort on the south end of Johns Pass and acquired most of Fuller’s holdings.

Archibald had big plans for his newly-renamed Treasure Island development by 1921. His greatest challenge involved securing funds to build a bridge so people could get to his island without taking a boat. Archibald began an aggressive marketing campaign and received a permit from Pinellas County in June 1921 to build a causeway connecting Central Avenue to the beach.

If Archibald needed inspiration, he could look to the beaches north and south of Treasure Island. Noel Mitchell’s attempt to develop the north side of Johns Pass between 1914 and 1919 ended before the October 1921 hurricane wiped out what little remained of Mitchell’s Beach. Archibald had no nearby coastal competitors. South of him, his older brother, Ira Graham Archibald, built the first bathhouse with changing rooms on Siesta Key’s Crescent Beach by 1919. His brother also played a leading role in helping Sarasota County gain independence from Manatee County in 1921. Ira served as an excellent role model.

However, one entrepreneur stood in the way of Albert Archibald’s plan

to build a bridge connecting St. Petersburg’s robust real estate market with his island: Perry Snell. Snell, the developer of North Shore and Snell Isle, wanted to forestall any competition along Pinellas beaches. Snell vigorously opposed the construction of a toll-free causeway. He successfully persuaded voters to deny bonds for Archibald’s project. Treasure Island Causeway would not open until November 1939, more than 15 years after Archibald abandoned his plans for the south side of Johns Pass.

ing to serve in the Spanish-American War. The Iowa native joined other troops who fetched fresh water from St. Petersburg’s Mirror Lake for future president Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in Tampa.

During the 1910s, Welch established himself in Florida’s lumber business, first in Ocala and later in Oldsmar.

In the early 1920s, Welch moved his business interests from Oldsmar to lower Pinellas and acquired much of the present-day Redington Beaches, then uninhabited. After selling his Treasure Island holdings, Archibald purchased the lands just south of Welch’s property, covering the area from what is now 140th to 151st Avenues in Madeira Beach.

Aware of Snell’s opposition to development along the Gulf Beaches, Welch found a workaround to connect his and Archibald’s holdings to the mainland. Partnering with developers north of St. Petersburg, Welch lobbied for a successful 1923 countywide road referendum that provided financing for a bridge to the beach. Crews dredged the approaches in 1925-26 for the first toll-free causeway along the Gulf Beaches. On July 4, 1926 – the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence – automobile traffic began to cross Welch Causeway.

proached from the opposite direction – stayed in service until 1962.

Archibald and Welch finally had the bridge they sought for many years, but also had much additional work to do. In 1926, the only notable structure in present-day Madeira Beach was Archibald’s wooden bathhouse at the intersection of 150th Avenue and Gulf Boulevard.

After a fire destroyed that facility, Archibald replaced it with a fancy casino building, new bathhouse, restaurant and store.

Archibald and Welch had grand plans for Madeira Beach by the mid1920s. A few years later, small beach cottages began to appear along the coastline.

Friends of Pass-a-Grille Wants to Protect and Preserve Beach Character

Friends of Pass-a-Grille wants to make something clear: They don’t want to destroy any single project, and they bear no ill will against anyone in the community. Rather, the not-for-profit wishes to maintain “mass and scale of building” in Pass-a-Grille and to give the Historic Board the ability to review plans for historic 8th Avenue. Bev Jackson, a former St. Pete Beach commissioner and one of the 12 leading members of Friends of Pass-a-Grille, explains it simply: mass and scale means a two-story building next to several 50-story skyscrapers would not fit downtown St. Pete’s character, and a 50-story skyscraper between two-story buildings would look out of place in Pass-a-Grille.

“We’re here to be your friends; we’re not here to be adversarial.

We want to work together with you

to change the land development codes, review and change the land development codes so that we can maintain our character, mass, and scale,” Jackson, said.

Jackson, who also serves on Passa-Grille’s planning and zoning board, detailed her involvement with the not-for-profit with The Gabber.

“I live here in Pass-a- Grille, obviously, and they’re building this really big house, very close to me, and I looked at that one day, [when] I was talking to my neighbor, and I said, ‘Oh you realize you’re not going to see the sun after about 12 o’clock, one o’ clock, in the afternoon’.”

Jackson said.

Affected by this, Jackson used her position on the planning and zoning board to notify fellow members of her concerns.

“I said, ‘If this is what land de-

velopment codes are allowing, we might need to rethink that’,” Jackson said.

According to Jackson, section 40.8 of the land development codes (CRDAE) written in 2008, stated: buildings should not exceed 35 feet.

“In theory, like I said, we thought we put the right ordinances and land development codes in place,” Jackson mentioned that this clause does not account for the extra 12 feet FEMA requires for safety, or elevator shafts; meaning buildings could legally stand up to (or over) 50 feet.

For a community with most buildings between 28 and 30 feet, some Pass-a-Grille residents saw this as an issue. So, to preserve Passa-Grille’s character, Jackson said Friends of Pass-a-Grille came to fruition.

Since its formation last fall, Friends of Pass-a-Grille have held public meetings, attended city commission meetings, and met with the historic board.

Friends of Pass-a-Grille will host public historic preservation workshops in partnerships with the City beginning Mar. 3 at 1 p.m. These meetings will involve architects and planners for a transparent dialogue.

Blue Heron Rendezvous

We Tried It: Kayaking Boca Ciega Bay In retrospect, it wasn’t the best day for kayaking.

I woke up to pouring rain, but ready for my kayaking session with Kayak Nature Adventures ready to hit Boca Ciega Bay. A text from Kayak Nature Adventures owner and certifiable Gulfport sea dog Kurt Zuelsdorf read “The strong north wind and morning low tide has pushed most of the water out of the bayou … I’ll put you on the water if you like.”

And he did.

His setup is essentially a rack of colorful kayaks near the Gulfport Marina. It sits at 2902 Miriam St. S. near the blue “happiness trailer.”

Zuelsdorf met me with a wave and a list of “must sees” to paddle toward. A paddler known for his cleanups of Clam Bayou, he outfitted me and my kayaking partner with a tandem ‘yak, laminated map, and a “good luck” before pushing our vessel into the water.

We paddled the long straight shot of Gulfport Beach, which Zuelsdorf said was the best way to see the Gulfport Casino and the volleyball courts.

and a shipwrecked boat near the oyster bars, I spotted a dolphin heading to deeper waters. Now, I grew up in Florida. I’ve seen dolphins from the safety of friends boats and from Town Shores a few times, but this dolphin was less than 100 feet away and it was jarring, to say the least. I only saw one fin, which screamed “shark” to me [publisher’s note: you only see two fins when it’s a shark) before I got a better look. I mean, if you think about it, dolphins are totally capable of capsizing a kayak.

With rain-spotted instructions stuffed in a Jansport, we followed the map to where Zuelsdorf hinted we’d see blue heron nests.

“Don’t disturb them, just peek around the corner,” he said.

We did just that.

Our best peek revealed the nests, Clam Bayou’s best kept secret.

Blue herons aren’t your normal french fry-begging gull, and it’s rare to see them so undisturbed. I didn’t get too close out of respect, but seeing them perched on nests and eyeballing my kayak while preening was a treat.

While leaving, I spotted one sitting on the rusted shipwrecked boat that guards a watery crossroad, and it felt like a warning to head back.

It’s peaceful on the water, and kind of lonely without the normal waterway traffic, but perfect for anyone who needs a moment (or more) away.

Man Jumps Fence; Police Not Sure if He Entered School

Gulfport Police are investigating whether a man illegally entered Gulfport Montessori Elementary School (at 52nd Street and 20th Avenue South) last month. Police say school surveillance cameras

captured footage of a man jumping the fence around the school last month.

According to police, the school’s intrusion alarm sounded at 11:20 a.m. on Feb. 13. Gulfport Police

Sergeant Thomas Woodman said the case remains under investigation with both law enforcement and the school district; both agencies want to know if the man entered a building.

Suspected Clearwater Gunman Arrested in South Pinellas Countywide Police Chase Ends in South St. Pete

A neighborhood dispute turned into attempted first degree murder charges for a Clearwater man after a police pursuit that stretched from Pinellas Park to South St. Petersburg.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were sent to a residence near 49th Street and Roosevelt Boulevard north of

the county jail at 6:54 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, where they found a 32-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds at the scene. The suspected shooter had fled.

That set off a police hunt for Quinten Randolph, 23.

Police say Randolph fled the scene in a car later found abandoned near U.S. 19. in Pinellas Park.

Law enforcement officers used helicopter surveillance to follow another vehicle where Randolph was a passenger. That pursuit ended in St. Petersburg, near 42nd Street and 4th Avenue South.

Police arrested Randolph and charged him with attempted first-degree murder and grand theft auto.

Art Fundraiser Uses Thrifted Furniture Instead of Adirondack-Style Chairs

“I kind of like that all the pieces were so unique and different this year. It’s another opportunity to make art, and art is not always made just to make money for yourself.”

Though many of the chosen artists are well known for their art in Gulfport, it’s each creator’s first time participating in the annual event.

“We’ve never repeated an artist,” Love told The Gabber.

“We want to give as many people as possible the chance to participate … If we haven’t asked someone yet it’s probably because there are so many to choose from.”

Currently, the fundraising furniture sits partially in storage and partially in Love’s Gulfport home. She and other organizers hope their debut on March 12 will be a successful one.

Last year’s total raised was lower than previous years and came in at around $7,400.

Their debut will hopefully bring in a large sum for the Senior Center Foundation this year.

“I’m just honored to be a part of it,” said artist Tracey Satter-McCue. “I love to rehash things from junk and make them into beautiful pieces … it’s therapeutic for me.”

These days, lumber isn’t cheap.

When organizers with The Best Seat in the House Chair-ity Auction noted the high price and demand for wood in 2022, they opted to use upcycled found chairs, tables, and mirrors instead of the traditional Adirondack-style chairs.

Except for that, the fundraiser operates the same as always: 16 artists get a piece to decorate; the items get auctioned off at 5 p.m. on March 12 at The Tiki Bar & Grill. Funds benefit the Gulfport Senior Center Foundation.

While the live auction focuses on the chairs (hence the name) the fundraiser features several “looking glasses” (mirrors) paired with tables and seats.

“In the past, the chairs were built for us,” said Chair-ity organizer Karen Love. “But this year we have an eclectic combination of found chairs and little vignettes.”

To add to the fun, artists selected their pieces months ago at a cocktail party. Each creator drew a number that corresponded

with a different piece of furniture.

“I got the one I wanted,” said participating artist Eric Folsom with a laugh. “It was a great project, I hope it’s received well.”

Folsom’s piece (he calls it The Green Flash) is a table with a wide, hexagonal top. The Gulfport metal artist forged a school of bronze fish and carved Gulf of Mexico inspired designs onto the wood.

Anyone can hike the trails at Chinesgut, and those hikes take you past WPA-era cabins and other suprises.

time. I am in no hurry. I don’t need permission from anyone to explore for just a little longer before I head back home. I don’t owe anyone anything; here, it’s just me and nature. Absolute freedom.

A friend of mine calls her Sunday hikes “going to church,” and today I learn firsthand how apt that really is. I’m covered in stickers and scratches and more than a few bites. My hair reeks of last night’s campfire smoke and my sweatshirt is thick with rain.

But I am here. I am so very much here. There is a divinity in the life surrounding me, so palpable I can just about taste it. And there is a divinity I feel deep within. I am not outside looking at nature; I am nature.

Chinsegut Hill was named for an Inuit word meaning “the spirit of things lost and regained.” I came here to learn and absorb and explore. I’m not quite sure what I was looking for. It turns out, what I find is myself.

Sunday morning finds me hiking around Chinsegut (Chin-SEE-guht) Hill in Brooksville. I stayed here overnight with a group of USFSP professors, alumni, and current and potential graduate students (I’m in that last group).

I came here to learn about the history of Chinsegut Hill: the mansion, the land, and the renowned families who have lived here. I came to learn about the Florida Studies Program at USFSP. And I came here to explore.

What I am looking for, exactly, I can’t say. I know I’ll see Florida’s vast expanse of beauty while our group canoes, hikes, and tours the house and the property. The rest will be a surprise.

As I weave my way around the trails of Chinsegut, I’m entranced by the melodies of various birds.

Cardinals, red-shouldered hawks, vultures, and crows are just a few I recognize. The chorus of calls surrounds me and I make my way to one of the most massive, magical oak trees I’ve ever seen.

It is almost fantastical in appearance, easily more than a century old, gnarled limbs reaching and stooping and bending every which way. It beckons me. Once I am underneath its safe grasp, I gaze up at its tentacles of limbs and see a flash of wings cross the acreage and light in an upper branch.

It’s an owl. Larger-than-life, regal in both flight and perch.

My jaw hangs open as I gawk.

Chinsegut is less than 90 minutes away, yet I feel transported into an entirely different world. On yesterday’s canoe trip down the Chassahowitzka River, we saw several manatees so close I could have reached out and touched one. They moved in such adagio I thought they were rocks at first.

Today the group has disbursed and I’m out here exploring on my own. I feel liberated as I tromp through dirt pathways, picking my direction on a whim, and taking my

Paul Wilborn’s Fiction Showcases an Illusory Ybor City Ybor City is known for many things: its Cuban, Spanish, and Italian roots; its cigar factories and casitas; and, in more recent years, its nightclub scene. But Paul Wilborn’s short story collection, “Cigar City: Tales from a 1980s Creative Ghetto“ (St. Petersburg Press, 2019) – winner of a 2019 Florida Book Award for General Fiction – resurrects a forgotten time in between, following the interconnected lives of nine searching souls drawn like moths to the fluorescence of Ybor’s artistic renaissance.

The book’s unique cast of characters is united by the theme of wanderers finding themselves.

There’s Paige, exiled from Miami by an unplanned pregnancy, who reinvents herself as a costumer to Ybor’s burgeoning drag scene.

Then there’s Angel, a semi-closeted gay man who must plan a fu-

neral for his friend Frankie, an early victim of the AIDS epidemic, while battling his own fears about the disease. Then there’s Daniel, the fledgling reporter at the The Tampa Tribune who profiles, then abandons, the prophetic, self-declared “Street Poet of Ybor” with disastrous consequences. From many places, these seekers find a kind of solace in Ybor, a home where the paint’s beginning to peel, good black beans and rice (with raw onion) can always be found, and each night brings a glorious new revelry.

Cigar City is wonderfully dreamlike. Wilborn’s stories strike the mind’s eye like an old photograph, the vivid lives of his characters leaving a slightly ghostly impression against a brooding atmosphere of urban decay, drugs, and the various heartbreaks that have led them to Ybor. Many are based on his own experiences as a fledg-

Wilborn also worked in the creative circle that founded Tampa’s Artists and Writers Group and launched the annual Artists and Writers Ball as a spoof on Tampa’s better-heeled Gasparilla celebration. Setting the scene for each story are striking photographs two other members of the Tampa Artists and Writers Group, David Audet, and Bud Lee. Like one of the many parties it depicts, this book plunges you into deep and rambling conversations, sometimes merry and sometimes melancholy, with a curious sequence of neighbors. You may leave as I did – with a certain sense of fondness and wishing you lived here – or you may leave feeling like you’ve had a few too many.

But either way, you may find your view of today’s rapidly gentrifying Ybor City changed by this trip down memory lane.
