Go Nuts I’d spent an hour talking with Jill Horstmann, the owner and sole employee of Squirrelly AF rescue, before she revealed a tiny squirming baby squirrel sleeping in her t-shirt.

“She’s a big crybaby; she’s really missing mom,” Horstmann explained. “Every time I take her out she’s screaming and crying.”

Mom was most likely taken out by a tree trimmer, Horstmann said.

Tree trimmers often displace the animals, kill adult squirrels, and knock down nests, she says.

Crying babies, squirrels with head trauma, senior squirrels with cataracts – any type of misplaced tree rodents, really – matter to Squirrelly AF, a St. Petersburg-based rescue.

“People need to bring squirrels to rehabbers when they find them,” Horstmann said.

On site, she rehabilitates the animals, teaches them “how to squirrel” on their own, and releases them nearby where they make their nests and live a normal life. Often

Happy Birthday Corporal Corricelli What a memorable experience my husband and I had on Feb. 5. We saw this event listed in The Gabber. Almost 200 vehicles, cars, Jeeps, and motorcycles were in the parade that cruised by Marine veteran Bart Corricelli’s home in Treasure Island, to celebrate his 100th birthday. Some were decorated with flags, banners and one bore a large picture of Corricelli when he was a young Marine. We gathered at Paradise Lutheran Church and Michelle Jackson did a perfect job of organizing the drive-by event. An honor guard

and color guard joined in. A prayer was offered and we were on our way. As we passed his home Corporal Corricelli was sitting under a tent, along with his family. To see this 100-year-old Marine continue to salute as flags went by was very emotional. Four Marines in full dress uniform were standing by. He has received more than 400 birthday cards to date. Happy 100 years young and thank you Marine Corporal Bart Corricelli for your service to our country, which continues to be free because of your sacrifice. After two failed motions for higher raises, Vice Mayor April Thanos sponsored a motion for a lower pay raise, and Council voted 3-2 to pass it.

Gulfport City Council gave itself a raise at its Feb. 15 meeting.

Council voted 3-2 to raise the mayor’s pay to $18,000 per year and councilmembers’ pay to $13,500 annually. Vice Mayor April Thanos (Ward I) sponsored the measure, which gained support from Mayor Sam Henderson and Councilman Paul Ray (Ward III).

Gulfport’s mayor currently makes $14,400 per year, while council members bring home $10,800 annually.

Councilors Christine Brown (Ward II) and Michael Fridovich (Ward IV) voted against Thanos’ raise proposal.

The approved raise also includes a stipulation that elected officials will get cost-of-living increases (COLA) when rank-and-file city workers also get those pay boosts.

Horstmann’s rescue is at 2727 24th Ave. N. It’s her backyard.

She ran her rescue, rehabilitation, and release for five years as a sub-permittee under Wright Ranch Rescue, Inc. in Lutz. In 2021, she filed for 501(c)(3) charity status.

For Horstmann, this means that she can easily accept donations, something she needs to keep the nonprofit running and the squirrels healthy.

It also means she has made the bushy-tailed creatures her entire life.

“They’re just cutie patooties … they’re so smart,” Horstmann said.

“My biggest fear is if something happened to me, who would take care of the squirrels?”

Wright Ranch takes care of all wildlife, and it’s there that expert rehabbers taught her everything from bats to raccoons. When Squirrelly AF takes in a squirrel with medical issues, Animal Medical Hospital in St. Petersburg [2540 30th Ave. N.] provides veterinary care and proper medication.

At the moment, Horstmann only works with squirrels, and that’s how she likes it.

The rescue center was once a studio for friends and music; now it houses cages of healing squirrels, awaiting the day they can go back into the wild.

Peanuts for Charity Rehabilitating squirrels isn’t cheap.

“People do donate, which is amazing, but that fluctuates so much,” Horstmann said. “The medical bills are unreal, so it’s impossible to keep a cushion for my rescue … and the animals can’t go without.”

Four milk nipples cost $15; a bag of nutritious sunflower seeds, $80; and fruit and vegetable prices continue to rise. These necessary lifesavers last about “two seconds” at a squirrelly sanctuary.

Before her deep dive into the squirrel world, Horstmann worked as a bar manager and bartender in Pinellas. She still raised her squirrels, and often brought babies and milk in her t-shirt cushion. When COVID-19 devastated the restaurant industry, she took the chance and began working with her squirrels full-time, and now, a full-time job in

Tips for a Successful Yard Sale

Gulfport’s Garage Sale Guru Offers Tips To Sell Your Stuff

Yard sales offer a way for people to find needed items at greatly reduced prices. These popular sales also help the seller clean out and make room in their homes. Participating in Gulfport’s popular semi-annual citywide yard sale on Mar. 19 (rain date Mar. 20) gives you the great advantage of big crowds for your sale. The citywide yard sale does not require a permit. Gulfport also has its annual marine yard sale the same day, and Madeira Beach has its citywide yard sale Mar. 12-13.

No matter where or what you sell, here’s how to make it successful.

• Plan ahead by going throughout your home for items to sell.

• Visit some yard sales ahead of time to see how to price things, or ask friends familiar with yard sale prices for advice. When a buyer sees high prices, they often move on to the next sale.

• Inspect your items to be sure they are in good condition.

• If you don’t think you have enough to sell, consider teaming up with neighbors.

• If you don’t own enough tables to display everything, consider borrowing them.

• Advertise your sale with pictures if possible and a list of items. People searching for something in particu-

lar will visit your sale first.

• Arrange like items together.

• Find a way to hang clothes instead of putting them in a pile on a table or the ground on a sheet.

• Some people have the sale inside of their home with a cashier at the exit to collect money.

• Remove yard obstacles for shopper safety.

• Place signs advertising your sale according to city rules. The best time to put signs out is late the night before the sale or early in the morning of the sale. Be sure to pick them up at the end of the day. Get commercial signs at a local hardware stores; you can use them over and over, if you store them well. Homemade cardboard signs work, too!

• Be willing to accept less so you can sell everything.

• Have plenty of change available

and keep it safe. A fanny pack is a good idea.

• Secure your home and pets.

• Let people visit early, while you are setting up. Early birds are usually serious buyers who know what they want, but they rarely come back.

Don’t miss a sale!

• If you have a large piece of furniture inside your home, have a helper watch your sale while you show the item.

• When your sale is done, if you don’t want to bring anything back into your home, you can post a curb alert on Facebook for people to pick up the leftovers. If it’s a piece of furniture or something big, describe it and indicate that you will take the ad down once it’s picked up to save someone a trip.

Former Gulfport LGBTQ Resource Center President Speaks Out on State Hate Bill As the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” moves through the House and Senate, Floridians have to wonder, what does this say about our state?

The Florida bill aims to restrict discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. It also permits parents to sue the school if they feel the school breaches the bill.

Though elected officials have yet to sign the “Don’t Say Gay” bill into law, it has stirred emotions – to say the least.

Gulfport resident Daniel Hodge served as president of the Gulfport LGBTQ Resource Center in the Gulfport Public Library from 2014-2020.

He remembers when the center was the first of its kind in a Florida library.

The center has come a long way and gained worldwide notice, but this bill even being considered in Florida is a step back, says Hodge.

Hodge attended high school in the 1970s and went on to attend the University of Kentucky.

LGBTQ history and sexual identity was not discussed in the classroom when he was in school.

“The ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill is a clear signal that Florida still has a long way to go to become welcoming to all,” Hodge said. “Conservative politicians are scoring right-wing points with wedge legislation such as this, instead of spending more time on issues that are truly critical.”

Sherry the Self-Hugging Author and Yoga Instructor Former Yoga Hater Becomes Owner of Madeira Beach Yoga Six years ago Sherry Duquet suffered from depression and the loss of loved ones while living in frigid (-30 degrees) Michigan.

Today, she’s hugging herself and leading others to do so on the shores of Madeira Beach.

While snowbirding, Duquet tried a class at Madeira Beach Yoga while visiting Florida.

“I tried everything: smoking away, drinking away the grief,” Duquet said.

“I wrote on a page ‘things to do today that scare me,’ and beach yoga was at the top. It broke me open; it was the first thing that brought me back.”

And it brought her back to Florida.

Duquet earned her yoga instructor certificate in Michigan, and even opened a studio, Smiling Yoga Co. But when the previous owner – Toni Gaither – sold Madeira Beach Yoga, she jumped at the chance to buy it.

The self hugging came naturally.

While teaching a class as a yearling teacher, Duquet asked the room to “wrap around” for a big self-hug.

“I was positively shocked by the response,” she said. “It was a quick idea, but I could see the entire class front on and the reaction was one of sadness and joy.”

Duquet also went on to write a children’s book, “Violet the Hugging Octopus.” It’s an whimsical story of a purple octopus teaching herself and her oceanic friends to hug (love) themselves.

“I was never taught to love myself; I grew up thinking I was unlovable,” Duquet said.

For the Hubbard Family, Dolphins are Life

Captain Dylan Hubbard jokes that he was born on the back deck of one of the fishing boats docked at Hubbard’s Marina (170 Johns Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach). Hubbard started working at the marina at 16, but before he was legally employed, he grew up watching his family run the dolphin tour and fishing business.

“My grandfather, Wilson Hubbard, started the business, and shortly thereafter, in the ‘40s, [he] was drafted to WWII. My great-grandfather took over the business for a while, and then when my grandfather came back, he eventually regained control and continued to proliferate the business. And now we’re here today,” Hubbard said.

Hubbard’s dolphin tours carry the

family’s legacy and family-oriented message. In fact, Hubbard told The Gabber his grandfather delved into dolphin entertainment in the ‘50s.

He owned his own dolphins and put on shows at Shell Key. The marina might have evolved into a different kind of sight-seeing destination, but the family’s passion remains.

“We’ve been doing this for a very, very long time in the area and our dolphin tours are kind of down to a science,” Hubbard said. “We are so familiar with our local population and know where they hang out. [We] can take different routes depending on the time of the year to make sure that we do spot dolphins.”

dolphins show their personalities during the tours. He has seen them play catch with their food, jump, and he’s watched calves grow into adults over the years.

Although the marina faced several challenges during the past two decades, including cold fronts, the BP oil spill, hurricanes, and most recently, red tide, Hubbard attributes the support and growth of the business to his co-workers (many of whom are family) and, of course, the dolphins.

Seven Questions with Dr. Ruthmae Sears

USF Professor Makes History, Teaches Math, Loves Disney Meet Ruthmae Sears, Ph.D, USF’s first Black faculty member to become a fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Originally from the Bahamas, Sears earned her undergraduate degree in the islands. She taught in the Bahamas and eventually earned a master’s degree in mathematics education from Indiana University and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. She’s most recently settled into her role as an associate mathematics professor at USF Tampa, and is a fan of the Sunshine State.

“When I flew over the beaches and the water, that’s what pulled me in,” Sears said.

She’s decorated with achievements, such as her recent study of structural racism and how it affects people daily in St. Petersburg.

Sears talked to us about dreams, how they change with age, and Disney movies.

GN: How does it feel to make history and be recognized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science?

RS: It was truly a humbling experience. I want to share this moment with those that supported me.

What’s next for you?

Someone asked me this the other day.

I smiled and said “world peace.” But honestly, I do want to write a book, something about going through the college experience as a first-generation college student, a woman. A sort of guidebook on how to navigate this.

Or maybe I’ll go into administration … but that’s a whole other thing.

What would you say to someone just starting out their career?

I always tell people to be unapologetically you, but also the best you possible. There’s no need to question your sense of belonging; you belong here if you want to. I would also tell them to inspire others, lift them up on the way. You have to invest in others in order to go forward.

OK, so you’re on a desert island and you can only have one movie. Ignore the obvious lack of logic here. What movie are you bringing?

Really, I’m such a Disney person. I’m going to say “The Lion King.” But you have to have something that’s going to make you laugh. Maybe “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” But Mufasa.

Pikachu Meets Madeira Beach Gian Baribault’s Pokémon Go beach cleanups mean participants can catch Magikarp while picking up trash. The 10-year-old environmentalist led a trial run of his cleanups on Feb. 18 on Madeira Beach. The official launch of the project kicks off Jun. 8.

According to Jenna Byrne, Founder and President of Water Warrior Alliance, an environmental organization devoted to clean water and safe environments, Baribault approached her on New Year’s Day with the novel idea because he needed a community service project for school credit.

Baribault and Byrne met three years ago at the YMCA where she worked as an event organizer.

“He wanted to collaborate on things like-minded that we used to do,” Byrne said. “[He and his friends] used to play Pokémon Go together at the YMCA, and so that was the first thing he brought up. So we decided to incorporate that into a cleanup.”

Ever the inventive project manager, Baribault embarked on his first Pokémon Go-themed cleanup.

“It just felt new. I’ve never really done anything like this before so it felt good,” Baribault said.

much as he used to, he thought incorporating the game with aspects of a traditional beach cleanup would attract more participants.

“I wanted to give animals the best home they deserve, and I wanted to get people out,” Baribault said.

The Pokémon Go approach adds a twist to the traditional beach cleanup.

“I think it gets the youth involved, right? So starting kids younger who maybe don’t realize the importance

of keeping their environment clean, kind of get to play a game while also having fun,” Madeira Beach resident Ashley Vickers said of the Pokémon Go aspect of the cleanups.

It’s Alive!

Treasure Island, Gulfport, Get Living Shorelines We’ve all seen seawalls: concrete barriers that border bodies of water in the Tampa Bay area. But with rising sea levels and expensive upkeep, their sustainability measures fall flat. Seawalls erode and cement pieces fall into the water, putting aquatic wildlife at risk and in danger.

Two South Pinellas cities have started the protecting themselves with living shorelines instead of seawalls.

Treasure Island A Treasure Island seawall inspection in 2020 showed that Treasure Bay Resort and Marina needed the most attention, according to the City’s website. The estimated repairs for the seawall totaled $1.8 million, the website also says, adding that Treasure Island opted to build a living shoreline instead. The living shoreline will protect the environment and minimize maintenance, the City says.

Living shorelines consist of naturally occurring species such as marsh grass, oyster reefs, and/or mangroves, which filter contaminants, foster healthy aquatic life, and provide shock resistance for waves, storm surges, and flooding.

The City of Treasure Island spent more than $1.5 million to build a living shoreline.

City of Treasure Island, Stacy Boyles, said living shorelines are “more aesthetically pleasing, cost less to construct and maintain, and are better for the environment.”

According to Boyles, Treasure Island applied in October 2020 for a $75,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and received the full amount, but the project called for additional funds, so the City split the applica-

tion and applied for two separate grants. Recently, the FDEP allocated $1.495 million for the project, and the City received an additional $200,000 donation from the Tampa Bay Estuary Program.

The project is currently in the permit process with FDEP and Pinellas County.

“We’re still on the permits” said Frain. “We have to submit the final plan to the DEP for approval, but our goal is to complete the work by September 30 of this year.”

Turns out, she didn’t need promotion.

“We were basically full the first night without any advertisement,” Goff said.

Pia’s Veranda, 3038 Beach Blvd., is next to Pia’s Trattoria and will operate as an extension of the restaurant. Pia’s Veranda takes in walk-ins, where the O.G. Pia’s usually cannot.

The new restaurant also offers more outdoor seating and live music most nights.

“It’s like having a baby, opening a restaurant,” Goff told The Gabber.

According to Clark Streicher, building official for the City of Gulfport, the city received a permit application for review December 2021.

Streicher says the city issued several corrections that still await re-inspection.

According to Fetfatzes, her father is the owner of the former apartments. They boarded up the former apartments at the beginning of 2021.

“We really are excited to get this project underway and clean up that terrible eyesore,” Fetfatzes told the Gabber in April, 2021.

Nantucket Artist Credited with Hard-Edge Realism Paints from St. Pete Hotel Nantucket artist Jim Cromartie‘s Wikipedia page credits him with the creation of “Hard-Edged Realism”, and he’s sold his work to a princess and a vice president.

But right now, he’s a snowbird in St. Petersburg.

He’s also the artist-in-residence at the Crystal Bay Hotel through April.

Cromartie will paint at the historic landmark while he waits out the New England winter.

It’s not something the hotel frequently does, but they made an exception for Cromartie, who has local friends.

An Artist’s Break Cromartie grew up in North Carolina, in a place he says had no art galleries and “one little museum.”

He began doodling in the classroom to impress his female counterparts, according to him.

“That was the beginning of my life of crime,” he joked.

Cromartie’s playful demeanor starkly contrasts his work, always hyper-realistic with down-to-thebone details of grass blades.

The North Carolina native went to East Carolina University for the only art program in the state. In his 20s and ready to travel, Cromartie went to Nantucket with his fraternity one summer as part of a school trip.

He worked there in the summers, washing dishes and cutting yards before he moved to the island full time following graduation. He washed dishes and cut grass – and painted.

“It was a gorgeous place, it felt like you were walking through a painting,” Cromartie said. “There’s a lot of great artists out there, but you have to have a break.”

And he got one.

Rockefeller left with two paintings, priced at $350 each. He continued to work with Cromartie, and Cromartie says Rockefeller bought more paintings and donated them for a tax break.

Realism in the Real World Eventually, he opened Cromartie Studio & Gallery in Nantucket, which he still owns.

In the earlier days, Cromartie’s gallery got a visit from a group of people, one of whom was a woman in giant sunglasses asking about his rose and lighthouse paintings.

She turned out to be Diana, Princess of Wales, visiting New England.

“When she took off her glasses I was in total shock. ‘Do you know who you are?’ I said. She said she didn’t have any cash and that someone would get in contact and send me a check,” Cromartie claims.

Eventually he received a mailed check for $25,000.

His career hasn’t been all celebrity and glamor, though it has its moments. For decades Cromartie’s perfected his hyper-realistic style and painted the places he visits.

“I’m a recovering perfectionist, and recovering perfectionists are my main clients,” Cromartie said.

Right now, he’s learning the brushstrokes for Spanish moss, a Florida staple.

“Mayday” Relives the Skyway Bridge Disaster – Through Captain Lerro’s Eyes Off-Central Players brings “Mayday”, the story of John Lerro, the man piloting the freighter that slammed into the Sunshine Skyway Bridge back in 1980, to the stage at Studio Grand Central. It’s an intimate space off 1st Avenue South for an intimate story as Lerro, played here by Michael Horn, recounts his life leading up to and after the accident brought down a section of the bridge – and 35 people with it – in a disaster that remains imprinted on the area’s collective memory more than four decades later.

If you’ve ever had a halfway decent history teacher, they made you see that history is stories, and those stories are populated by humans who live whole lives around the events to which they’re attached. The script, written and directed here by Bill DeYoung, brings home the fact that Lerro is one of those humans. He was more than a boat captain whose boat hit the bridge. He’d been a city kid raised on opera, studied to be a dancer, and was a father and a husband before ascending – through years of hard work and training – to his prestigious position piloting ships in and out of Tampa Bay. DeYoung’s script shines, helped along tremendously by Horn’s performance. Written as neither as di-

saster saga nor redemption story for Lerro, DeYoung takes much of the play’s dialogue directly from Lerro’s testimony before the Marine Board of Inquiry, and from interviews he gave to the media over the years. Certain sections are verbatim; others take dramatic license, but Lerro lays out the tale and the audience must navigate the murky waters of the terrible tragedy. Someone needs to take the blame, and he needs someone held responsible. It may be the media or the government or the families, or it may be himself.

For as powerfully as it’s told, this might be a 60-minute play stretched into 80 minutes. The production uses some gripping multimedia touches

during the opening of the play, including actual radio communications from the incident, and it would have been nice to drop a few more of these flourishes into the rest of the show to help break up the run time and give Horn a little break. Horn handles it nonetheless; “Mayday” really hinges on his performance and his ability to keep the audience engaged in Lerro’s life story, and the actor manages it with emotional depth and energy that keeps the play moving along at a good clip.

"she gave me my life back" “It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.”

This story was shared with us by John S, a Tampa Bay area resident who has peripheral neuropathy.

While no one was hurt in this accident, John had suffered almost everyday of his life with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set it and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot.

“Typically, the first stage is pain.” shares Dr. Rebecca Gibbons of AAIM| Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on tacks or marbles.
