A Gulfport house made history last week as the first home in America sold as an NFT.

Aside from a bell in the front yard, the 2100-square-foot, blueand-white Gulfport house at 6315 11th Ave. S. is as unassuming as its neighbors.

But the house itself is a game changer in the world of cryptocurrency.

On Thursday, Feb. 10 the Spanish-style home sold as an non-fungible token (NFT) and became the first piece of real estate in America to sell via NFT auction.

An NFT is not a physical token, but an electronic one, stored on blockchain (think of blockchain as a dig-

ital ledger that doesn’t “live” in any one place, but in several). Another way to think of blockchain: “a ‘chain’ made up of individual ‘blocks’ of data”, according to forbes.com.

It’s a pretty niche concept, but NFTs and Bitcoin have been heating

Duke Energy Wants To Use 10 Feet of Some Gulfport Properties – For $1 Representatives from Duke Energy want some Gulfport residents to allow easements in their front yards for underground utility lines.

Duke asked some property owners in Gulfport and other South Pinellas areas to agree to 10-foot easements in front of their homes for the placement of underground power lines. In exchange, Duke will pay the homeowners $1, according to easement request documents obtained by The Gabber.

The effort is part of grid, infrastructure, and technology improvements in southern Pinellas and beach communities.

The power company presented details on its efforts to Gulfport officials in October 2021.

Duke spokesperson Ana Gibbs said the local improvements include installing 40 miles of underground lines serving 1,000 homes and 150 transformers. They are part of improvements linking into Duke’s substations at 51st Street South and Central Avenue, and near 69th Avenue South and Central Avenue.

As part of that effort, Duke representatives are reaching out to Gulfport residents about agreeing to the easement for underground lines.

Lisa McKinley, who lives on Newton Avenue, is one of those residents.

She’s received notices and Duke Energy representatives have come to

talk to her and her neighbors about the easements.

McKinley is skeptical of the utility push; she does not want a utility box in her front yard. She points to the alley behind her home Residential lots in Gulfport often run 50 feet by 160 feet, and giving up 10 feet of that in the front yard is too much to give, she says.

“I can’t give you 10 feet — impossible,” McKinley says. “I won’t give you 10 feet.”

Gibbs said the effort is part of a $6.5 billion, 10-year effort to bring more technology that will help avoid power outages, especially during storms.

“In 2020, smart, self-healing technology helped to avoid nearly 290,000 extended outages in Florida, saving customers around 18.9 million

minutes of service interruption, nearly double the hours saved in 2019. Currently, nearly 45% of customers in Florida receive smart-thinking grid technology and the goal is to be at 80% by 2027,” Gibbs said.

She said utility engineers try to work underground lines and improved infrastructure around property owners who do not agree to easements.

“When a customer declines, our engineers look to the closest neighbors to ensure the spacing works. The project is then redesigned to ensure quality distribution occurs. If no one accepts equipment, projects are in jeopardy of being canceled since participating in an underground project is voluntary,” Gibbs said.

She also said the utility industry has moved to more front yard easements over the back of properties.

“This is for the safety of our maintenance crews as well as the customers. To have crews in the back yards of customers creates risk for both. This is why construction of new neighborhoods is underground with front lot transformers. More simply put, placing equipment in front of homes makes access easier and faster for maintenance and to restore outages if they occur,” Gibbs said.

Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly said the easements are between Duke Energy and its customers, since they would be on private property.

Typically, they are used to buy digital art, such as the logo for the infamous ​​Fyre Festival. The logo of the controversial festival sold for $122,000 as an NFT. Unlike the digital world of art, the token that purchased the Gulfport house represents a digital deed.

The NFT contains the rights to the property.

The World of Crypto Real estate investor Leslie Alessandra owns Tampa Bay-based blockchain company DeFi Unlimited.

She decided to sell the property as a conversation starter for cryptocurrency.

“This technology will revolutionize the real estate industry providing speed, transparency, and security on a level not seen before,” Alessandra wrote on the auction site, referring to the speed with which the sale will close.

Her company, DeFi Unlimited, creates software to help ease businesses into crypto spaces.

Heckler Realty on St. Pete Beach brokered the sale, but the home officially sold through Propy, an online real estate transaction platform.

“It’s a bold adventure,” said Amy Heckler, CEO of Heckler Realty. “It’s kind of like being Captain Kirk exploring worlds unknown.”

The house was brokered from St. Pete Beach Realtor Amy Heckler but sold through Propy, an online real estate platform that handles sales entirely online.

Heckler knew little about the ins and outs of cryptocurrency, but when Alessandra came to her with the idea, she learned through webinars and online classes.

“It’s something you definitely have to research if you’re not familiar,” Heckler said.

A Home, Not a House Before the auction on Thursday, Feb. 10, the home had a backup offer for the asking price of $650,000 cash, but on the day of the auction, the winning bid came through in cryptocurrency: 210 Ethereum, or $653,000.

Ethereum, or ETH, simply refers to a type of cryptocurrency.

The house has four bedrooms, twoand-a-half baths, a bell in an archway near the front door, and exposed brick – and a wall featuring art from St. Petersburg muralist Derek Donnelly, known locally as Saint Paint.

Donnelly painted a watery pelican in his trademark nautical style.

Sellers paid for the mural with NFT, said Donnelly. Donnelly, however, received cash, not cryptocurrency, for his work.

“People might think it’s a digital house, or a digital mural in the metaverse, but it’s not, it’s very real,” Donnelly said. “I think this is just going to make it easier for people to do these kinds of transitions through this technology.”

A 21-Year-Old and a 100-Year-Old Woman Discuss Life, Happiness

Her biggest project at the moment is writing about the Florida panther.

Reilly was born in Canada and grew up in Detroit, Michigan during the Great Depression. She’s the mother of five children She aimed to become a nurse, but was turned away because of her height: 4’9”. She lived most of her life in Michigan, and moved to Gulfport with her late husband in 1983.

Reilly’s short stature has affected little else in her long life.

“You should never look back, always go forward in life,” Reilly told The Gabber. “Remember the good things.”

Jaime Jaillet

Jaime Jaillet turned 21 in October 2021.

Margaret Reilly celebrated her 100th birthday with a bash at the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center on Feb. 2. Jaime Jaillet celebrated her 21st birthday with a legal drink this past October.

The two women have 79 years between them, and live worlds apart.

21-year-old Jaillet is a student at Eckerd College majoring in animal studies and double minoring in biology and creative writing. She’s originally from Connecticut, but relocated to St. Petersburg for school.

“I want to make scientific writing

What do you want out of life? I want to make some sort of difference somewhere. It would be a small thing, inspiring one person to care about an animal or species. I don’t have huge goals, but I do want to make a difference with my writing.

What has been your biggest struggle? I struggled in high school with a lot of mental health issues. Seasonal depression in Connecticut is a very real thing. I didn’t want to get out of bed, I just wanted to lay there and not think. My mother learned that the best thing to do is bring me food, water, and lay with me.

What would make you the happiest?

Lots of dogs. I don’t want to live in a city; I want to live somewhere more rural. It eases me and makes me feel better.

Your favorite memory? My happiest memories are when my family would go to a camp site called Rocky Neck in the summer for two weeks. I remember learning how to ride my bike, climb trees. I was the youngest and the smallest and had to do the most to catch up.

Margaret Reilly What do you want out of life? I’m just enjoying the last years of my life. I can do anything I want.

What has been your biggest struggle?

I don’t think there was ever a hard time.

My dad was sick with arthritis and with three children at home, I was the oldest and I was boss. But I don’t ever remember a real bad time. I had three brothers in the service and they all came back.

You can’t think about bad times.

What would make you the happiest?

All my kids are married and educated. I didn’t expect my husband to die when he did, but I did remarry and I enjoyed that and I love that family.

Your favorite memory? It was about 1944. We bought the house, my husband and I. We had a new car and the babies were all good.

Do you have any regrets?

If I had known what I know now, I would have went to college immediately after high school. I waited seven years to start studying higher education.

Justin Shea, Gulfport Cultural Events Supervisor for the City of Gulfport, is one of those people that are always “on.”

He’s the man behind city events and programs, but he also doubles as a sort of public information officer, the constant glue between citizens and Gulfport. It’s Shea who calls local media outlets with safety and sandbag information in the face of a storm, and Shea who people spot at nearly every city event.

It’s rare to call the events supervisor and not immediately hear: “Justin Shea, City of Gulfport.”

The Gabber got to know Shea a little better in this edition of Seven Questions.

What is your greatest joy?

My greatest joy is the eureka moment when working on schoolwork with my daughter and seeing her understand a mathematical formula or correctly spell a tough spelling word.

GN: Tell me a little about where you’re from.

JS: ​​ Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, I grew up just 10 minutes north of the City of Gulfport.

How did you get involved with the City of Gulfport?

I started my career in the City of Gulfport in 2007 as a recreation leader for the Teen Night program at the Gulfport Recreation Center. I was in school full-time and worked part-time at night mentoring inner city youth. In January of 2014, I was promoted to the Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor.

Community organizers know Gulfport’s Cultural Events Supervisor by his signature greeting: “Justin Shea, City of Gulfport.”

Did you always see yourself holding your current position?

My hopes and dreams as a child were to be a police officer or a professional football player. But when I attended college and started working for the City, the City was very good to me. If you asked me in sixth grade I would never have dreamed of holding this position. Actually, I remember telling a piano teacher “I

If you didn’t live in Gulfport where would you live?

That is a very good question. I am a firm believer of growing roots wherever a person lands in life. I was taught at a very young age to never burn any bridges and to always treat people with the utmost respect and dignity.

If you could change one thing about Gulfport, what would it be?

I would not change anything; everybody has their niche. It takes a village. A grassroots community is a close-knit community, working together with passion, and it is always great to be a part of something meaningful and productive.

Gulfport Fire Department’s New Truck Council Buys Traditional, Not Hybrid, Truck Gulfport City Council voted at its Feb. 1 meeting to buy a new command vehicle for its fire department.

The Gulfport Fire Department will use the truck for investigations, inspections, and – potentially – water rescues in hurricanes and storms.

Currently, the department has a 2014 Ford Explorer with 70,000 miles on it. The Gulfport Police Department used it before GFD, according to GFD Captain James Lundh.

Lundh said the vehicle had some recent repairs; he also said he expected it would need a transmission repair in the near future.

Council voted 4-1 to approve the purchase of a Ford Ranger Crew Cab 4x4 for $32,971.00. Lundh said he preferred a pickup truck to the existing SUV for storing equipment as well as materials from fire investigations. Council opted for the Ford truck over more expensive hybrid

Former Funkytown Boutique Owner Selling Inventory After Lung Cancer Diagnosis Jackie Kreuter owned Funkytown Boutique on Beach Boulevard from 2014-2019. Running her retail store was her dream, and took up the better part of five years.

She’ll sell what’s left of the store’s inventory at a public yard sale on Saturday, Feb. 19 as part of a fundraiser. Doctors diagnosed Kreuter with Stage IV lung and liver cancer in October 2021.

Kreuter’s shop once operated out of 3117 Beach Blvd. S., where More Bazaar stands now. She closed in 2019 after the landlord raised her rent by $1,000.

Today, she’s in critical condition, and on round five of chemotherapy.

“I was in shock when I found out,” Kreuter said. “But I felt like something was wrong for the previous six months because I was in pain.

Eventually I couldn’t handle the pain anymore.”

Selling the store’s items means giving up on the dream of reopening, Kreuter said. It was a hard decision, but with piling medical bills, a necessary one.

“I just want to sell everything so I don’t have to pack it back up,” Kreuter told The Gabber. “It’s hard because it was my dream to open back up again but my medical bills are as-

Close friends Denise Keegan O’Hara and Melanie King hatched the idea of a yard sale to relieve Kreuter of hefty storage costs and hospital bills.

“Jackie is paying ungodly amounts to keep everything stored,” King said. “That and she still has to pay for medications, living expenses, and she’s not able to have a store.

She needs help.”

The yard sale idea takes place alongside an art raffle featuring the

works of more than 20 Gulfport artists. These artists, O’Hara included, donated their art specifically for the benefit.

Acoustic duo Marianne & The Professor will perform from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

“We’re just trying to come together as a community to help one of our own, and this is someone that needs help,” said King.

ter, and she wanted a puppy worse than anything in the world. For our entire courtship and marriage, my wife adamantly didn’t want a dog and, as a team, we offered no illusions we’d ever get one. Ever.

Until.

After meeting my brother-inlaw’s springy cockapoo, my wife joined a breeder’s email list. She did not mention this to me. For a year, she received messages announcing each new litter. While I was steadfastly anti-dog, she was getting messages that went something like this: New litter! Five puppies. Venmo me $100 deposit! They won’t last!

themselves. After one such message, my wife looked up from her book and said, “Venmo this woman $100. It’s for a deposit on a puppy.”

I had a choice: Venmo the woman $100, or wage – and lose – a war against getting a puppy, and then Venmo the woman $100.

I sent the money.

What happened next made me glad my wife changed her hardnosed anti-dog stance: Moments before visiting the newborn puppies, we told our kids, and, with apologies to whomever our daughter marries, she’ll never be as happy as she was in that moment I knew all the work would fall on my shoulders: walking, feeding, walking, scooping poop, walking.

As a kid in the ‘80s, our dog lived in our suburban California backyard. I don’t think we owned a leash, and poop bags didn’t exist. Dogs today get walked and groomed like they’re starring on “Lassie”. How did we go from a world of no dog groomers to $90 dog haircuts?

Despite all this, I knew no one would love this puppy as much as I. As soon as the novelty wore off, Echo – that’s his name – annoyed everyone else. The combination of bodily fluids, gnawed toys and shoes, and stolen food makes everyone moan helplessly. The only thing stopping him from taking food off the dining room table is physics.

And he’ll eat anything. For 15 years I’ve failed to give any of our cats a pill. When newly neutered Echo needed pain meds, he gobbled them up – including the human blood pressure medication he wasn’t supposed to eat. Luckily, he also gobbled up the hydrogen peroxide we gave him to make him throw up the pill.

The good news? He’s trained the kids to put their things away and he listens to the word “No” about half of the time (although he always understands its meaning).

To my chagrin – and despite my devotion to him – he still prefers my wife. I think he’s figured out that she’s the key to his membership in our pack.

He probably also knows she’s still getting those emails.

Gulfport’s Lesbian Literature Festival Now Attended Worldwide Online

Lesbian romance writer Georgia Beers lives in Rochester, New York but will co-lead the keynote speech for Gulfport’s 5th annual ReadOut Festival.

When ReadOut: A Festival of Lesbian Literature hosted its first year back in 2018, it was a niche event for local lesbian writers to connect.

It was (and remains) a program of the LGBTQ Resource Center at the Gulfport Library; at one time, it took place exclusively within the four walls of the Gulfport Public Library.

In five years, the festival has transitioned to an online event featuring

pre-recorded readings [pearls] and Zoom chats.

It’s become a globally attended event, with last year clocking almost 1,000 viewers in 22 countries.

“The upside is that you don’t have to have money or time to come to Gulfport but the downside is that you don’t get to come to Gulfport,” said Susan Gore, LGBTQ Resource Center President.

Gore hopes to one day blend the online format with an in-person meetup, but COVID-19 precautions are still a concern.

“COVID is not a positive thing, but last year proved a positive outcome of a bad situation,” Gore said. “Trust me, we’d love to be back in the library but with the way things are going, that’s not happening right now.”

The Festival runs from Friday, Feb. 18-Sunday, Feb. 20.

One of the principal events of the festival is the first event of the weekend: the opening keynote speech, which sets the tone for the rest of the weekend.

The original keynote speaker was Michèle Alexandre, Dean of the College of Law at Stetson University.

Alexandre withdrew less than three weeks before ReadOut’s opening ceremony, after announcing her move to Chicago.

Gore and other organizers appointed two speakers in her place, Georgia Beers and Anne Shade.

Beers is a veteran lesbian romance novelist who has been a part of the literary queer women scene since 2000. She’ll tune into the festival remotely, from currently snowy Rochester, New York.

“I feel like the world has gotten bigger since I first started writing,” Beers said. “There is so much eye-opening things to learn. I feel lucky to be a part of that.”

Shade is a newbie author but hit the ground running writing inclusive lesbian romance featuring people of color, something often missing in her genre.

The New Jersey author is mostly known for Femme Tales, a queer version of three classic fairy tales.

“I’d like to tell other writers not to give up,” Shade said. “I sent out 75 manuscripts and was told each time to make my stories more diverse because all my characters are Black.”

She went on to self-publish, and was eventually picked up by Brush Strokes Books.

American Stage’s Latest an Engrossing, Refreshing Choice

The latest from American Stage, “School Girls: Or, The African Mean Girls Play” takes place in Ghana in the mid-1980s.

There’s a scene in American Stage’s production of “School Girls: Or, The African Mean Girls Play” in which every cast member participates, one way or another, in the performance of a Whitney Houston classic. The scene is too crucial to spoil here, but what I will say is

that it’s an encapsulation of all the strange and potentially incongruous elements of the 2018 script by Jocelyn Bioh. The characters whip back and forth between sly and sweet, sassy and sad, with moments of broad physical comedy and hardto-stomach nastiness sometimes

in the space of just a few minutes.

Taking all this into account along with the fact that the action takes place in mid-1980s Ghana, it’s an intriguing choice director Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj has made for St. Pete.

exclusive boarding school for girls over the course of a school year, “School Girls” is an ensemble piece and the all-female cast shows up strong, especially impressive considering the majority of the actresses are young enough – some in or just out of college – to convincingly play teens. Phyllis Yvonne Stickney and Jennifer Leigh Warren are the sole adults on stage; Stickney as the school’s headmistress and Warren as her former classmate and pasther-prime pageant queen. Bringing gravitas and very different life experiences to the proceedings, each has a different idea about how best to guide the students. But Aguel Lual as Paulina , the reigning queen bee who has her sights on the Miss Universe pageant and seems a shoo-in until a new student unexpectedly changes the game, anchors the story.

In her first moments on stage, Paulina is humorously despicable: a narcissist who’s passive-aggressively unkind and cringey in a way most of us can chuckle at uncomfortably because we’ve all known a

Paulina at some point in our lives.

But this girl is no joke, and when her behavior lurches into viciousness and cruelty there’s a real possibility the audience could dismiss her halfway through the play as, well, just some mean girl. Lual knows there’s more there though, and the play is better for it. Her performance as Paulina zeros in on what makes “School Girls” such an engrossing piece and a refreshing choice for

St. Pete: Teenage girls around the globe are surprisingly similar in a lot of ways, but geography and time can make for some striking differences as well.

Better with Age

Book About St. Pete of Yesteryear Brings Back Sweet-but-Forgotten Memories If you’ve lived here long enough, you’ve heard of the iconic flight of Tony Jannus and his Benoist XIV across Tampa Bay in 1914, marking the official “launch” of U.S. commercial aviation right here in St. Pete.

But were you aware that 4th Street North once led past The Florida Wild Animal Ranch, where patrons could visit an elephant, a kangaroo, and the troop of carnies and circus performers who ran the place? Or that St. Pete Beach’s classic Beach Theatre was once owned by the screenwriter who penned Cliffhanger and GoldenEye? Or that the Virgin Mary held an almost 10-year vigil as an apparition on the side of an office building in Clearwater?

The book follows an earlier Vintage volume (2021) in highlighting the wacky and wonderful bits of St. Pete’s history – what DeYoung calls a “spectacular spelunk” into unique and sometimes all-but-forgotten places and people of the past. History buffs and St. Pete fans alike will appreciate DeYoung’s gift for spinning a good yarn and the veritable scrapbook of old photos,

postcards, and other curiosities in the book’s jam-packed pages.

But with St. Pete’s reputation as an arts hub firmly established, and its glitzy skyline inching a little higher every year, I wondered why the average reader might want to delve into a time when the city was – as DeYoung himself puts it – a bit of a “cultural wasteland.”

His response got me thinking.

“This stuff was key to life in St.

Pete,” he averred, “and in every instance I thought it all deserved to be properly chronicled, set down, and put in front of anybody who wants to learn what motivated earlier generations.”

Along those lines, it is interesting to read that celebrity dinner theater was the “pinnacle of entertainment in St. Pete” for an aging population in the 1970s and 1980s, before being displaced by younger-skewing leisure activities in later decades. And that St. Pete has surfaced numerous times in the popular consciousness as a kind of prototypical leisureland, whether as the backdrop for John Candy’s lovable turkey “Summer Rental”, or the location for a highly choreographed, super-secret taping of a never-aired Bob Dylan television special. These big-picture cultural insights are not the focus of “Vintage St. Pete” — that would no doubt be a drier, more academic book — but they are there to discover in the chewy, colorful, bite-sized histories the book serves up.

DeYoung may even have a third volume on the way. After all, he says, “there are plenty of fascinating historical tales still waiting (needing) to be told.”

Eric Alan Blosser, 58 passed away January 31, 2022. His death was very unexpected and has left all of us with a huge whole in our hearts. Eric was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a friend to many.

Eric worked as a journeyman electrician for over 25 years and as a handyman in his retirement. He was a Navy veteran. Eric was greatly loved by all and would help out everyone any way he could. He would remember you saying you liked something, or needed something like ear buds or tools, or a thing for the Scouts, and next thing you know, he had gotten it for you or made it for you. Eric loved motorcycles and his ‘56 Chevys. His greatest pride was in his boys, grandkids, nieces, and nephews. Eric is survived by his wife of 33 years, Robin; son, Alexander and his wife Bri; son, Bradley; his brothers Kevin, Steve, and Kirk; his brothers-in-law Charlie, Johnny, and Josh; his grandchildren Zoe, Alis, and Jasper; his nieces Crystal, Jennifer, and Erica; his nephews Christopher and Chase; and his many friends. His celebration of life will be held on Feb. 26, 2022 at noon at War Veterans’ Memorial Park, Shelter 1.
