Since moving to Gulfport, the Virginia Beach native has set her sights on collecting vintage Gulfport and South Pinellas relics.

When Marilyn Sheffield was born, her father was already 52 years old.

She spent her childhood traveling with an older, retired father. On family trips, he always remembered to buy and

send postcards, a novelty that stuck with Sheffield.

“I watched that as I grew up and did the same thing; my children grew up and picked it up as well,” Sheffield

For the young women of the Gulfport Montessori Elementary Girlfriends Club, Monday, Jan. 17 was a Martin Luther King Jr. Day to remember.

The club marched through downtown St. Petersburg in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Big Parade. It was the first time the Gulfport Montessori Elementary School all-girls club marched in the annual parade.

“Ever since I mentioned the parade they haven’t let it go,” said Robin Moore, a counselor at Gulfport Elementary. “The girls are really excited.”

Moore heads the group. She works alongside a team of female teachers and administrators who encourage the students to discuss leadership and female empowerment each week for nine weeks.

A spot in Gulfport Girlfriends is an exclusive one, Moore says.

Ballerina in Blue At 21, Brianna Melton is directing, choreographing and dancing in the St. Petersburg Ballet Conservatory’s “The Nutcracker.”

A ballerina since she was three years old, Melton aims to dance for a Florida ballet company and eventually teach full time.

Her parents, Brian and Anna Melton, own the Gulfport-based ballet, so it was no surprise when the young ballerina took a break from searching for a company and stepped in the role of artistic director.

For months she’s been training a group of young dancers to take the stage. Melton pins their hair back, makes conversation around the “lipstick mirror”, and works diligently with dancers not much younger then herself.

But it wasn’t necessarily on a happy note.

Gulfport Grants a Request to Waive Parking Space Requirements

The new open-air eatery, right across 30th Avenue South from Pia’s Trattoria, won’t take reservations – but it will have live music.

The owners of Pia’s Trattoria are forging ahead with its expansion into the former Tutto Bene’s space on Beach Boulevard. They have a new concept for the space – and approval of a parking variance from the City of Gulfport.

Pia’s owners Tom and Pia Goff are bringing a new open-air oriented concept called Pia’s Veranda to the Tutto Bene space at 3038 Beach Blvd. S., across 30th Avenue from Pia’s Trattoria at 3054 Beach Blvd. S. Tom Goff hopes to have Pia’s Veranda open early February in light of Gulfport’s Board of Adjustment ap-

proval of a parking variance related to the new venue.

Tutto Bene, owned and operated by Allan and Michelle Bishop, closed last year. They still own the property via Bishopco. Holdings Inc. and lease it to the Goffs.

The Bishops’ St. Petersburg company requested the variance from Gulfport for Pia’s Veranda as part of the Goffs’ plans to add 50 additional outdoor seats to the venue. Under Gulfport’s zoning and land-use rules, the additional seating would also require 13 new off-street parking spots. Bishop-

co asked the city to reduce the 13-space requirement to zero.

The Board of Adjustment voted unanimously Jan. 12 to approve the variance. The approval carries the stipulation that the outdoor expansion must get completed within one year for the reduced parking requirements to stick.

Gulfport’s Principal Planner Mike Taylor told the board there were currently 100 surplus parking spots in relation to existing businesses and uses. The 13-spot variance takes that current surplus down to 87.

Tom Goff said the parking variance just needed get approved before embarking on opening the new space. That space will have 120 outdoor seats and 30 indoors, he said.

The new space will not take reservations — which often fill up Pia’s Trattoria — but will have live music, Tom Goff said.

Pia’s Trattoria opened in 2005. It has 60 seats outside, plus 14 on a sidewalk cafe area.

Restaurants across Florida and the U.S. have turned more to outdoor dining during the coronavirus.

“COVID is affecting things. People want to sit outside,” Kelly Wright, the Board of Adjustment chair, said.

Eventually it became more about the historical aspect of the postcards rather than the postcards themselves.

Her most recent fascination? Vintage Gulfport.

The Gulfport Collection Like so many Gulfportians, Sheffield stumbled upon Gulfport more than five years ago and never left.

She set her sights on finding Gulfport postcards, something that can prove difficult. Most of the postcards of the past were sent from larger cities, like Tampa and St. Petersburg, Sheffield said.

She finds her hyperlocal cards, some dating back to the ‘50s, on eBay or in local antique shops.

In one, there’s a Tiki-style cabana shelter on Boca Ciega Bay that no longer exists. Another shows the now-named William’s Pier – then made of wood.

“It’s just so much fun seeing what was and what is now,” Sheffield said.

She prefers the vintage ones, though her collection has a few recent additions that advertise the Tuesday Fresh Market and the Gecko Ball – “Geckos of the Round Table” – from 2019.

“Postcards are almost extinct,” Sheffield said. “Some shops carry them, but not like they used to.”

The Gulfport History Museum holds a collection of about 40-50 antique postcards.

Joey Vars, the curator of exhibits for the museum, has a large personal collection of postcards, but none from Gulfport proper.

They’re elusive treasures, he says: Gulfport didn’t see as many tourists as, say, St. Pete, but the few postcards created were an attempt to bring in tourists visiting sunny Pinellas.

“A lot of that stems from the history of the city … Gulfport and the earlier Veterans City succumbed to St. Petersburg,” Vars said. “There wasn’t a lot of promotion for Gulfport. But Gulfport wanted a piece of that pie.”

“Largely because that medium of communication has somewhat fallen to the wayside in the digital era,” Vars said. “People stick with digital souvenirs. I personally think the visuals on modern postcards aren’t as attractive as the vintage postcards.”

Vars said he’d love to talk to Sheffield about a vintage Gulfport postcard exhibit.

Remembering Virginia Beach Gulfport isn’t Sheffield’s first love.

Now a mother of three postcard

collectors herself, Sheffield boasts an impressive collection of postcards from her previous home in Virginia Beach.

The Virginia Beach Public Library digitized many of her found items, along with photographs, documents, and newspaper clippings.

Her friends still mail her Virginia Beach postcards they’ve found.

She never sends them. They’re part of the Sheffield family legacy now.

“All my kids ever say is they want me to leave them is the postcard collection,” she said.

Dollar Bills For Her Sister

The dollars on PJ’s Oyster Bar’s walls are more than a fun vacation tradition If you’ve visited PJ’s Oyster Bar in St. Pete Beach, you’ve seen the dollar bills. Bills with notes, signatures and doodles adorn the walls and counter spaces, but why? Do they serve as a nostalgic glimpse, or boast of the restaurant’s success?

Or... do they represent something entirely different? The Gabber spoke to Kelli Umstead, PJ’s co-owner, about the mementos.

“Brett and I bought the restaurant about 15 years ago and the dollar bills were a thing before we ever bought the restaurant. But, about five years into us owning the restaurant, we thought that the walls really needed a good cleaning,” Umstead said.

Debating what to do with the money on the walls, they came up with a perfect solution: donate to the Ronald McDonald House in St. Petersburg.

For Umstead, the choice of charity comes from her family’s own tragedy. Before she was born, she had a sister, Lisa, whom doctors diagnosed with bone cancer. Lisa and her mom moved into the Chicago Ronald McDonald House, where they lived for two years before Lisa passed.

“It’s always been a charity or a cause, in my family, that we always gave to,” Umstead said. She mentioned that PJ’s donates directly to the charity since bartender Billy Reilly’s mom holds a management position at the St. Petersburg location.

It’s not uncommon for beach restaurants to have dollar bills stapled to the walls, but PJ’s on St. Pete Beach does it because of a long-ago tragedy.

Starting in the ‘80s, customers would decorate a dollar bill with their name, a note or a doodle and staple it to the wall. The first year PJ’s donated, they donated between $7K and $10K, according to Umstead (she said she couldn’t recall the exact amount). PJ’s made the donations annually, during the Christmas season, but due to COVID-19 (and the fewer customers to put dollars on the wall), they’ve yet to donate the cash from 2020 and 2021.

When the time comes to donate,

PJ’s employees will take to each dollar bill with a pair of pliers and gather the charity funds for the Ronald McDonald House in St. Petersburg. Umstead estimates the restaurant has $6K on the walls, and the amount increases daily.

Stetson Dean Moves to Loyola

The Law School Has Not Yet Named a Replacement Chicago, meet Dean Alexandre.

The Dean of Stetson College of Law, Michèle Alexandre, will step down from her role come July, 2022.

Alexandre announced this week that she’d accepted the position as Dean of Loyola University Chicago School of Law; she will assume duties in Chicago on July 15.

“It has been an incredible honor to serve the Stetson Law community in such meaningful ways,” Dean Alexandre said in a press release. “I am proud to have been part of some transformative success on campus, success that will greatly benefit students and the Stetson community at large.”

James Museum ‘Away From Home’ Painful but Important Traveling Exhibit Highlights Hateful History

The latest visiting exhibit at the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art is a far cry from the usual fare at the downtown St. Petersburg museum.

The collection speaks to a time when Euro-Americans stripped Indian children of their names, braids, and identities in an American at-

tempt to assimilate the tribes into Euro-Americanism through Indian Boarding Schools.

Away From Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories, a traveling collection from the Phoenix, Arizona-based Heard Museum, opened in Phoenix in 2000. Over the past two decades, the Heard

has updated and added to the exhibit.

I grew up in the Hillsborough County School System and don’t recall learning about the history, or even the existence of, Indian Boarding Schools. I didn’t read about the forced assimilation of American Indians. I first learned

The Schools From the 1800s to the 1970s, the U.S. government sent tribal children to off-reservation boarding schools, where the teachers would “civilize” them.

The exhibit contains some posed pictures from this time, revealing groups of unblinking youth, standing uncomfortably in stiff Euro-American clothing. The U.S. government saw this as a victory, but descendants of these students still feel the impact today.

The U.S. had more than 350 schools, and Away From Home focuses mainly on the western schools.

The exhibit includes a child-size set of handcuffs, rusting in a display case, a replica of a chopped-off braid resting in a red barber chair, and photographs of Indian children smiling in laced shoes and pink ribbons.

about the idea of “colonial mentality” via Twitter – not the classroom.

That’s why this traveling exhibit visiting St. Petersburg matters.

Cultural genocide on display challenges our patriotism. It’s hard to stomach – and even harder to look into the faces of these children, but it’s a part of history that we can learn from.

The Heard Museum collection pays little mind to the appearance of the people who created the schools; instead, it’s filled with firsthand accounts, artifacts, bone-chilling quotes, and art from American Indian artists.

Children were often photographed before and after assimilation. Many were unrecognizable in the later photos after years of white washing and punishment.

She adds, “This museum did a great job of getting open but now we have to think ‘who do we want to be in the world?’ Our mission is to inspire.”

Maybe Hine’s referring to the lack of Indian perspective at the James.

Maybe this exhibit marks the beginning of more art and history storytelling at the James and less colonialized ideas of American Indian culture.

Gulfport Police Make Unpleasant Discovery in Stolen Van

A van stolen from Pinellas Park in December was found in Gulfport last month — with an unpleasant surprise.

Gulfport police say the stolen van was full of “rotting tropical fish” when they found it near John F. Chase Park (53rd Street and 27th Avenue South) on Jan. 16.

The van contained a dozen bags of dead fish, according to the Gulfport Police Department. Police did not disclose the name of the owner and the business involved as they investigate the motor vehicle theft.

Pinellas Park Police officials said fingerprints from the stolen van did not provide enough details, but that they have submitted DNA samples for processing. Police have not yet made any arrests; detectives await DNA results.

the officer used a stun gun on a 64-year-old man in a wheelchair.

The man was allegedly panhandling at a gas station and had outstanding warrants for failing to appear at court hearings.

SPPD Chief Anthony Holloway convened the Command Review Board to review the incident. The board determined Officer Matthew Cavinder improperly used his Taser when arresting Timothy Grant at the Chevron Gas Station near 49th Street and 22nd Avenue South.

Grant was accused of trespassing and panhandling at the station.

The review board and Holloway announced Cavinder’s termination Thursday and released video of the incident.

“During the arrest, Cavinder, ‘drive stunned’ (tasered without prongs) Grant multiple times even though he was not physically resisting in a way that warranted being tasered. When Cavinder’s supervisor reviewed the use of force, including the body camera video, it was immediately forwarded to the Office of Professional Standards for internal investigation,” SPPD wrote in a statement.

Holloway said Cavinder acted improperly and against department training and policies when he used the stun gun on Grant, who is Black.

SPPD will send a report to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission to determine whether Cavinder will keep his state certification.

The police union representing St. Petersburg police officers has not yet responded to a request for comment.

The new kid on the St. Pete theater scene is opening its Spring 2022 season with a fresh take on (what is now) an old story. Author and veteran journalist Bill DeYoung and the Off-Central Players bring the story of Captain John Lerro to the stage at Studio Grand Central.

Lerro piloted the freighter that slammed into the Sunshine Skyway Bridge back in 1980, bringing down a section of the bridge, and 35 people with it, in a disaster that remains imprinted on the area more than four decades later.

Potbelly pig couture, on the other hand, she’s still perfecting.

Puppy Love: The Pet Fashion Show is a runway-style show featuring adopted pet alumni from Pet Pal Animal Shelter. Each pet will dress head to toe in upcycled fashions from Sallee.

“It’s fun … it’s similar to creating clothes for women. Getting the measurements can be tricky,” Sallee told The Gabber. “The dogs think you’re playing. They think the measuring tool is a leash and want to go outside.”

The event takes place Sunday, Feb. 6, 3-8 p.m. at Studios at 5663 in Pinellas Park. It’s a production presented

by Sallee, Neon Dreams Productions and Pet Supplies Plus.

But really, it’s a benefit for Pet Pal Animal Shelter.

There will be no adoptable animals at the studio, but Pet Pal representatives will have a booth with photos and descriptions of animals at the shelter.

The models are rescues themselves, except for Boris, the potbelly pig.

“Boris was a hoot,” Salle, who measured him, said.

Boris’s owner Alicia Nunes got him from a breeder more than a month ago; she wanted him to keep her 7-year-old Vietnamese potbelly pig company.

Even though Boris is new to the Nunes family, he’s picked up modeling garments with ease.

“He’s very young, still developing, but he’s really very sweet. He likes his belly rubbed when I get home from work every day,” Nunes told The Gabber.

Boris and his furry counterparts will ham it up wearing zero-waste clothing and accessories. Most of the tiny clothing is pulled from thrifted items, and the smaller dogs will wear toddler outfits.

Wes Ray and Husband Take Over Abstract Art for Autism After Eight Years, Caroline Duvoe Steps Down as President

Wesley Ray is the new leader of Abstract Art for Autism; his husband, Gulfport councilmember Paul Ray, will assist.

Abstract Art for Autism President Caroline Duvoe is retiring after leading the organization since 2014.

“I’ll be 70 in October … the pandemic took it out of Dan [Vice President Dan Mlotkowski] and I, we both had some serious health issues,” she said. “We moved to Central Florida and bought some raw land. It’s time for a change.”

The organization brings art to people with disabilities through workshops and classes. When the non-

profit is in full swing, students sell their art at public events.

Duvoe has handed the reigns to Wesley Ray. The Gulfport resident works as a staff member at PARC, a Disabilities Service and opportunities program for children and adults with disabilities in Pinellas County.

Duvoe also previously worked at PARC. “Wesley fell in love with the population at PARC, same as me,” Duvoe said.

Despite taking on the new position, Ray has no plans to quit his job at PARC, adding he “will work there forever.”

“It’s the most wonderful feeling, seeing their faces everyday, It’s hard to describe,” Ray said. “They shine with a big light and you get this warmth from working with people with disabilities.”

The Gulfport resident graduated with a special diploma from Lakewood High School in 1996.

“Special diplomas are available to students with disabilities who are not able to meet the requirements for a standard diploma,” Ray told The Gabber.

Ray’s husband and Gulfport council member Paul Ray, will also take on a management role in the organization, Duvoe said.

“Wesley and Paul have always been supporters of Abstract Art for Autism,” Duvoe said. “Wesley has the experience and knowledge of disabilities to make him a great candidate for the job – and Paul a great back up.”

Ray plans to keep much of the framework of Abstract Art for Autism the same, citing that people with disabilities often are uncomfortable with stark changes.

Duvoe will continue working at the organization until a new normal is set.

“It’s difficult, I’ll be honest,” Duvoe said. “I love my students and their families … I will miss it sorely but I’ll be closely involved for a while.”

For her, this means training the Ray’s and providing a familiar face for returning students, when the time comes. Abstract Art for Autism halted operations in March of 2020.

In 2022, the nonprofit will reopen under Ray and Paul’s leadership.

The Gabber will have more news as the changes get finalized and the duo locks in reopening dates.

“It’s really important to bring this back … the best way to express yourself is through art,” Ray said.

“People forget that people with disabilities are just like everyone else.

They need art too.”

Urban Gypsies Musician Biked from Memphis to Gulfport, Met His Soulmate Most know silver-haired free spirit Barney Waterbury as the second half of the Gulfport folksy funk band “The Urban Gypsies of Florida.”

Waterbury lost his musical partner and soulmate Leta Woloshuk in May of 2021.

Memphis-born Waterbury continues to perform and play the South Pinellas stages that he once stood on with his partner of 23 years.

It hasn’t been easy, We talked with Waterbury about loss, healing, and joy.

GN: Why do you think people resonate with the Urban Gypsies of Florida?

BW: A big part of it is the joy involved with our music. There’s a lot of joy, hope and community in my songs. If I lived by all the words I’d be a guru.

Has your music changed since Leta died?

Absolutely. It’s like a big part of me also died. Leta played with me for 23 years; I now have to live with a broken heart. My music gives people hope, and I need to live by my own words and mourn the community loss of Leta. I’ve been trying to add musicians, more drums, but it’s been hard with COVID. Seems like everyone’s getting it. Everyone but me.

Have you always been a free spirit?

Always. I left Memphis and said ‘I don’t want to be like all of you.’ That was mean. But I had $30,000 cash in my pocket and left on my bicycle with a guitar. I was 25 and it took me three months to get to the Boca Cie-

She’s in every square inch of this house; her banjo is on the wall. I keep thinking ‘What would Leta do?’

Leta would continue on if she lost me. Leta would help the community heal. I still take her banjo to every gig … I see people wearing her outfits, stage outfits that I gave away at gigs. She’s ever present.

Men don’t grieve, you know, they replace. I think she’s giving me permission to move on. I have no desire right now, I was with the same woman for 23 years and I can’t think about that.

My queen has died and I am an unemployed knight. What does an unemployed knight do? Go on a quest.

My quest is to heal the community.

I had to reinvent myself. It was just the two of us touring as the Urban Gypsies. It was a story of love and hope and traveling and fantasy. I lived in a fantasy land. That was my vision. Be careful of visions. I’m sick of trying to make things happen.

I think that’s very important and we’re in the right place for that... especially downtown St. Petersburg. We just started a business recently. Dealing with cities and government, in general, is something that you’re like, ‘OK, well, get ready for that’. We were so surprised when we started dealing with downtown St. Petersburg and the City. They want your business to succeed, they want to send you to the right people, they want to connect you to the right people and it was just nothing but pleasure.
