news Beach Icon Renovations Underway

Here’s What’s Happening with the St. Pete Beach Theatre Ideas swirled after Chris Scott bought the Beach Theatre on St. Pete Beach in August, 2021. After several community input meetings, the formation of the nonprofit, The Beach Theatre Community Foundation, Inc., and the subsequent election of a board of directors, restorations to the iconic venue are underway.

“The idea is still also to have it be an entertainment space for live acts,” Scott’s business partner Hendrik Bisanz mentioned, noting the theater would still operate as a movie theater, too. From a new hot spot for indie films to Rocky Horror showings, to concerts, the theater will serve as an entertainment station for all ages.

Shana Nichols spoke about her involvement in the development.

“About three years ago, myself and [a] colleague went to the City [of St. Pete Beach] asking about the theater with the proposal to reopen it as an indie cinema and a new venue,” Nichols said. Now, she serves as the executive director of The Beach Theatre Community Foundation.

Since the theater sat dormant for nine years, it needs extensive restorations, but, Nichols said, they’re coming along swiftly. She added that they’ve completed the architectural design and fixed the roof leak, but the theater still needs a general contractor to advance the reconstruction.

“We’re going to expand the lobby.

We want to have a gathering spot, a place where people can connect, and network, and chit chat about the movies and about the events that are going on,” Nichols said. “We’re going to add a bar and lounge area.

So that’s like a big part of the restoration.”

This plan will leave the theater with fewer seats, but provide a more intimate and welcoming space for guests to mingle.

The Beach Theatre Community Foundation has started to restore the historic theater on Corey Avenue.

Both Bisanz and Nichols stressed the importance of community involvement with this project. According to Nichols, Saturday, Jan. 15 was the theater’s 82 birthday and to celebrate, The Beach Theatre Community Foundation conducted a movie survey to learn what kind of movies

locals wanted to see at the theater.

Classic Hollywood and independent films took the lead. “[It’s] Very important for us to have a fun experience and not just movies. We want people to know that. We do want it to be a multi-entertainment venue,” Nichols said.

Gulfport Buys Another Hybrid Vehicle

Council Approves Hybrid 4WD for Community Development Gulfport’s Community Development will soon get a new hybrid truck.

Gulfport City Council approved spending $37,702 to buy a new Ford F-150 hybrid truck. The truck will replace the 2013 Nissan Altima the department currently uses.

Council approved the hybrid truck purchase at its Jan. 18 meeting.

City staff will use the truck for construction inspections and site visits.

“The vehicle currently being used

by Community Development is a 2013 Nissan Altima that was repurposed from the police department and has 80,000 miles on it,” said Tom Nicholls, city public works director. “The (Community Development) Department is requesting a four-wheel drive vehicle so it can be used after severe weather events which could require driving over rough terrain and high water

Council voted 4-1 to buy the F-150 hybrid with Councilwoman Christine Brown dissenting. She preferred the less expensive initial price tag of the non-hybrid Chevy and wondered how the hybrid truck might hold up with salty floodwaters.

Gulfport Council Votes to Replace Senior Center’s Broken A/C

The Gulfport Senior Center will get a new and much-needed HVAC system. The new system will cost almost $35,000.

Gulfport City Council approved a $34,791.74 contract at its Jan. 18 meeting to replace the 15-ton HVAC system at the city’s senior center.

Council voted 5-0 to replace the air conditioning system. The city awarded the contract to Largo-based Caladesi Construction Co. The existing HVAC unit, installed in 2001, failed and needed replacing, according to city staff.

Caladesi Construction will install a Trade 15-ton split system with electric heat and a new air handler – and will be more energy efficient than the old system, according to city staff.

The city also hopes to renovate or rebuild the Gulfport Senior Center, at 5501 27th Ave. S., and has earmarked money to hire lobbyists and fundraise to that end.

For the young women of the Gulfport Montessori Elementary Girlfriends Club, Monday, Jan. 17 was a Martin Luther King Jr. Day to remember.

The club marched through downtown St. Petersburg in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Big Parade. It was the first time the Gulfport Montessori Elementary School all-girls club marched in the annual parade.

“Ever since I mentioned the parade they haven’t let it go,” said Robin Moore, a counselor at Gulfport Elementary. “The girls are really excited.”

Moore heads the group. She works alongside a team of female teachers and administrators who encourage the students to discuss leadership and female empowerment each week for nine weeks.

A spot in Gulfport Girlfriends is an exclusive one, Moore says.

Ballerina in Blue At 21, Brianna Melton is directing, choreographing and dancing in the St. Petersburg Ballet Conservatory’s “The Nutcracker.”

A ballerina since she was three years old, Melton aims to dance for a Florida ballet company and eventually teach full time.

Her parents, Brian and Anna Melton, own the Gulfport-based ballet, so it was no surprise when the young ballerina took a break from searching for a company and stepped in the role of artistic director.

For months she’s been training a group of young dancers to take the stage. Melton pins their hair back, makes conversation around the “lipstick mirror”, and works diligently with dancers not much younger then herself.

But it wasn’t necessarily on a happy note.

BMX OK in Skate Park – For Now

A Two-Week Trial Run Could Mean a Permanent Change BMX riders have a two-week trial run to use the Gulfport Skate Park.

If all goes well, the change could last indefinitely.

At the Jan. 18 Gulfport City Council meeting, City Manager Jim O’Reilly said the city will start a two-week trial period on Jan. 31. During the trial, both skateboarders and BMX riders can use the skate park.

Currently only skaters can officially use the park, located behind the Gulfport Recreation Center on Shore Boulevard South, but the skate park will welcome BMX Monday-Friday, from 3-6 p.m., during the two-week run. Skaters can use the park from 8:30 a.m.-sunset.

“We will videotape it to see if there are any issues,” O’Reilly told the council, adding: “I will have staff there also in case an issue were to arise.”

Before council appointed O’Reilly as city manager, he had an extensive career managing city recreation programs, most recently as Gulfport’s Leisure Services Director.

O’Reilly and staff want to look at how skateboarders and BMX riders interact at the skate park and if the park has enough space to accommodate both.

Mayor Sam Henderson and Vice Mayor April Thanos (Ward I) voiced support for the trial run.

Councilman Michael Fridovich (Ward IV) expressed less enthusiasm about the idea, saying the

9-Year-Old Sells $1 Lemonade from his Gulfport Front Yard It’s 45° outside on Sunday, Jan. 23, but that doesn’t deter 9-yearold Bentley Smith from setting up his homemade lemonade stand on 21st Avenue South in Gulfport.

He’s sold $1 plastic cups of lemonade alongside his grandfather, Christopher Littlewood, on weekend afternoons for the past month.

They have no plans to stop.

Smith runs the stand (cash only) while Littlewood makes the lemonade and keeps the outdoor heater cranking.

The 9-year-old says he’s saving his dollars to buy his mother, Stephanie Torres, a new laptop.

“I was saving up for a GoPro at first,” Smith said. “But now I want to buy my mom a new laptop. She used to have one and it got really old and broke.”

So far: $127.

“He’s (Smith) just very outgoing, very tenacious … he just has a really big heart,” Torres said. “Once he puts his mind to something, he does it.”

Some of Smith’s customers stumble across his booth organically, and some seek him out after seeing Littlewood’s Facebook posts on the Gulfport, Florida pages.

Creative Clay Students Dance for Good Fortune in the New Year

Choreographer Helen Hansen French led the group. After a few minutes of dancing, Creative Clay invited onlookers to join the fun.

It’s nearing February, but Creative Clay students squeezed in a traditional Lion Dance for a shot at good luck in 2022.

The performance [Sunday, Jan. 23] premiered at the St. Petersburg Museum of History in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the St. Petersburg-Takamatsu Sister City Partnership.

On March 9, Heart Artlink in Takamatsu will perform a parallel Lion Dance.

“Every year, we do something different,” said Kim Dohrman, CEO of Creative Clay. “We’re looking forward to what’s next.”

We Tried It: Sacred Lands Tour

Come for the Peacocks, Stay for the History Animal bones, pottery, and screaming peafowl cover Sacred Lands, David Anderson says with a smile.

It’s Sunday [Jan. 16] at 11:30 a.m. and I’m on the Sacred Lands site tour with around 10 other interested tour-takers.

The optimistic, masked Anderson leads several historical walking tours in Pinellas. The Sacred Lands tour is his main weekend gig, and it’s obvious that the place is close to his heart.

His grandparents purchased the Sacred Lands lot in 1940 for $20,000.

More than 80 years later, Anderson immerses himself – and visitors – in the history of the Tocobaga Indian village, the Seminole ancestors who once lived on the site.

The climax of the tour leads up the Anderson/Narváez mound.

Speckled with pottery and shells, Anderson believes the first Americans used the man-made hill as a ceremonial ground.

A town hall, if you will.

“Nobody had to tell the Tocobaga Indians to buy flood insurance,” Anderson jokes.

In the 1500s, the village lived on what is now parking lots, neighborhoods, and a restaurant (Jungle Prada Tavern.) In 1528, Spanish explorers Pánfilo de Narváez and Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca made contact with the site.

That contact resulted in death, disease, and failed gold explorations across the country.

Anderson knows it all, and he tells the heavy history in a light-hearted manner, shifting from pre-industrial revolution, to prohibition times, to the present.

“My grandfather thought free was a good price,” he said. “It was a oneman job that took him two years.”

Details like this one (plus speculations of Al Capone drinking in a nearby speakeasy) comprise the tour.

It was the peafowl that hooked me.

Sacred Lands has groups of peahens and peacocks strutting around the site at all times. They look suspicious of strangers, but they seem to know the Andersons are responsible for leaving out food.

The original pair of peafowl flew to Sacred Lands on their own, and now their ancestors thrive on the historical grounds.

Occasionally bird rescues – such as Birds in Helping Hands – take in peafowl and release them on Anderson land.

“From two birds back in the ‘50s, there’s more than 50 now,” Anderson said. “I like to joke that we become the unofficial peacock rescue center.”

Julio’s Empanadas is a Latin restaurant opening on Gulfport’s 49th Street.

Afri-Caffeinated Raining Berries, a coffee-shopmeets-acaí-cafe, opened on the ground floor of St. Petersburg’s Artistry Apartments (1631 Central Ave.) on Sunday, Jan. 9. The store is a franchise of the (for now) Florida brand, but Raining Berries founder Bimal Bhojani is passionate about keeping the stores organic and true to their roots.

“My family has been in the coffee industry for seven generations in Africa,” Bhojani said. “I guess this is in the blood in many respects.”

Raining Berries sources its coffee and espresso from East Africa and

brews it fresh. They use 100% organic acaí, with gluten-free granola and fresh fruit offered alongside treats like smoothies and matcha.

“We just want to do the total opposite of the big brands,” Bhojani said. “We want to give people a good cup of coffee.”

Introducing: The Salty Nun The swinging days have ended at Central Avenue’s Swinger’s Bar & Grille – at least for now.

Banno owns popular Gulfport breakfast spot Stella’s and serves as the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce president. Brewer created Salty’s and Salty’s Sandwich Bar, both popular Gulfport businesses; she sold both businesses in 2021.

The Salty Nun, they say, merges both concepts.

“We probably came up with this idea over drinks one night and the fact that we are making it a reality is exciting,” Banno told The Gabber.

The new spot at 2501 Central Avenue will feature breakfast favorites and Stella’s nun, along with Salty’s live music vibe, plus a full liquor bar.

They will add a stage, wipe the restaurant clean of all pineapple imagery, and roll out a fresh menu inspired by both Stella’s and Salty’s.

“We’re nervous, excited and we have such a good following of loyal customers from both businesses from Gulfport that we will hopefully bring to St. Pete,” Banno said.

As for the swings, they’re not going anywhere.

“You may see some of the swings around the restaurant,” Banno said.

“We know that is a favorite.”

Empanada Envy The previously lackluster Gulfport building at 2201 49th St. S. received a mural makeover this January to prepare for the opening of Julio’s Empanadas Latin Twist Cafe.

Owner Julio Pagan filed articles of incorporation for the restaurant in December, 2021, according to the State of Florida.

“Looking forward to another unique food option in Gulfport and just a few blocks from my ‘slice of paradise’, Twin Palms Meadow,” Gulfport resident Wolfgang Deininger wrote on Facebook.

It’s unclear when the empanada eatery will officially open for business.

It’s Not Every Day You Meet a Drag Queen Named “Matthew”

GN: You’re an actor and a drag performer. Do you feel the two personalities blend?

MM: They absolutely blend. In fact, I think drag has really been a blessing to my acting career. I’ve gotten some amazing opportunities like playing Auntie Mame in “Mame” at freeFall Theatre and Mrs. Shinn (Mayor Shinn’s wife) in “The Music Man” ... at Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota.

I think I’m best described as a character actor and a drag artist. It’s all part of the package!

How did you get into drag?

My first appearance in drag was in college. Our dance program was producing a dance concert saluting Hollywood and some of its most beloved stars. Many of the performers auditioning had no idea who some of the stars being celebrated even were.

There was a Carmen Miranda number and I was so aware of her as I loved watching classic MGM musicals. I nailed the audition. I was pretty nervous on opening night and thought that the audience would be turned off. They loved it and suddenly being in drag became part of my bag of tricks.

Why did you choose to keep Matthew McGee as a stage name while performing drag?

It sort of just happened. I had toyed with drag names for ages (Patti Melt, Millie Crystal, Helen Damnation) and none of them really stuck. The more I learned about drag, the more I learned about drag artists that used

It’s like picking a favorite child! I really love the current show I’m working on at freeFall Theatre in St. Petersburg.

It’s called “I Love to Eat” and it’s basically an evening with America’s first celebrity chef, James Beard. I play James Beard and it has been such an exciting and exhausting process. 60 pages of dialogue.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in Augusta, Georgia and grew up in Athens, Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and ultimately Washington, Georgia – a very small town between Athens and Augusta. I’ve got Georgia on my mind, I guess.

When did you decide you wanted to be an actor?

I was always on. From a very early age. I was super-inspired by the Muppets, “The Cher Show”, Pee Wee Herman, and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

That makes a lot of sense, when you think about it!

How would you describe your drag persona?

Very campy and fun! For me, drag has nothing to do with identity. It’s a performance and I hope the audience enjoys it as much as I do. From my website: “His drag style is a mix of high camp and 1960’s Hollywood Cocktail Glamour.” That’s pretty close! My favorite drag performers are Lady Bunny, Varla Jean Merman, Trixie Mattel, and Dame Edna Everage. I think that comes through.

“We’re trying to make it as safe and comfortable as possible,” said Ann Soble, a co-chairperson of the festival. “But it’s good to be back.”

Safety is Festival Beth-El’s biggest priority, Soble added.

Festival attendees must wear masks – mask monitors will check throughout the fest – and organizers expects social distancing.

In addition, the art festival returns without its Saturday night cocktail party. In addition, the festival’s high school exhibit will take place solely online, and the typical vendor-heavy Avenue of Shops won’t happen this year.

Despite the changes, the outdoor sculpture garden, and the boutique and main galleries will exhibit the work of more than 130 artists.

“It’s still beautiful, prize-winning art that we hand select … the quality of the work will be the same,” Soble said. “We are thrilled that we’re able to do it.”

Seminole Heights glass artist Susan Gott has participated in the St. Petersburg festival on and off for the last 10 years.

Gott didn’t show her work online last year, but she’s happy to return.

“I think people have been pent up and looking at their four walls for the last two years,” Gott told The Gabber. “A lot of people are excited to meet the artists and see the work in person.”

Two new books from Gulfport author Michael Taylor (“Natalie, A New England Girl with Cowboy Dreams” and “Natalie’s Cowboy Dreams Take a Tropical Twist”) chronicle the life of Taylor’s mother, Natalie Gray Taylor Linger, who moved with her husband and two boys to a ranch in Indiantown in 1956. Their rodeo romance – part of a thriving Western culture of dude ranches that flourished across the country in the 1940s and 1950s

– wasn’t always easy. The accidental death of Natalie’s son Smokey and divorce from her husband Bill rocked Natalie’s foundations, but she hung on. Reflecting on the story captured in his pages, Taylor muses, “I think she would be proud.”

This isn’t Taylor’s first foray into family history. His 2016 memoir “Growing Up Floridian” chronicles his early life, from cracker cowboy kid in rural Florida to a beach-loving teenager on the Gulf. His new project involved a lot more research, gathering stories from older relatives and reading accounts of everyday life during the World War II era. His investigations lead him to discover some fascinating Florida

stories – like tales of Vick and Faye Blackstone, a legendary Florida rodeo duo and the only couple represented both in the national Cowgirl Hall of Fame and Cowboy Hall of Fame –as well as some surprises, including two divorce certificates indicating his parents had divorced not once, but twice.

His research also delved into what became one of the real highlights of the Natalie books: dozens of striking photographs of his mother. Each chapter begins with a different image that captures the essence of that moment in her life, and Taylor notes that pairing words and images through the self-publishing platform provided

by Amazon Kindle offered one of the most satisfying aspects of the project.

I’m a little envious; as a collector of family stories, I would love to see some of them immortalized in print – triumphs, struggles, and oddball adventures playing out on the page, and connecting my ancestors to the bigger story of life in this country and beyond.

For Taylor, it’s an ongoing process of discovery.

“Writing gives you a changed sense of yourself, of your family,” he says. “In the end, Natalie’s is really an amazing story about a woman who went through all kinds of trauma,” he grins. “And still managed to do a good job by me.”

Mark Walters’ Book on the Scrub Jay an Elegy to a Vanishing Florida

Even before reading Mark Jerome Walters’s “Florida Scrub-Jay: Field Notes on a Vanishing Bird” (University Press of Florida, 2021), my Florida bucket list was well developed. I wanted to find a mastodon bone in Wakulla Springs, spot a Florida panther in Big Cypress, and wave to a manatee at Crystal River. But now, I have a goal that tops them all: I want a Florida scrub jay to land on my head.

This isn’t so far-fetched. As Walters explains, these boisterous Florida jays, whose home habitat is the high-and-dry scrub that once abounded in Florida, live in small family groups that patrol a particular patch of scrub. When curious humans come for a visit, a family’s appointed watch bird, the “sentinel,” will flit up to the highest vantage point – sometimes a hiker’s head – for a good look around. Where else but Florida, right?

But, as Walters relates, it’s increasingly difficult to find scrub jays – despite the fact that they are the state’s only endemic bird. The book follows his not-always-successful quest to observe these plucky passerines in their remaining strongholds across Florida, to Kennedy Space Center, Oscar Scherer State Park, Archbold Biological

The spreading footprint of Florida’s humans, coupled with the loss of periodic wildfires that once kept the scrub in open, optimal condition for jays, has driven a 90% decline in their population over the last century.

A journalist with a veterinary medicine background, Walters has written two previous books about endangered bird species, and one of the joys of “Florida Scrub-Jay” is his ability to translate conservation science into terms most readers can understand. He gives voice

to some remarkable scientists and advocates fighting the front lines to preserve the remnants of Florida’s unique scrub ecosystem, and scrub jays along with it. As they lead us through the wild lands, sometimes finding their bird and sometimes not, they share perspectives both poignant and insightful.

Though some may find the structure of the narrative a bit repetitive – visit site, introduce experts, do some birdwatching, repeat – the author nevertheless vividly paints the places he visits, evoking all of the beauty, strangeness, and poignancy of a disappearing landscape. Describing a controlled-burn habitat restoration in part of Oscar Scherer State Park, he writes: “Having seen regular burning for the first time in almost half a century, the scrub – hidden in the roots and seeds beneath the sand – still remembered what it was. And that is what it slowly and surely became again.”

This moment, and many others in “Florida Scrub-Jay”, helps us visualize both the ecological loss sweeping our state, and the future only possible with the right kind of care and intervention.

In the end, I must admit, that’s even better than a bird perching on my head.

Helen Simon answered a call for a council reporter at The Gabber, but she became much more than that.

Her range of interests brought us great stories – from animal rescues to real estate glow ups and so much in between. She was a sharp journalist, a true professional who always had a surprising anecdote and a dry wit that made working with her fun. Honestly, she was a force.

I admired her intellect, her passion for life, her love for animals and especially for her family. I’m so sorry to hear about her passing – she was truly one-of-a-kind and I think the world is a little less bright without her in it. –Shelly Wilson, Helen’s editor at The Gabber.

Chester Robert Halgas of Warner Robins, GA, 85, passed away unexpectedly Sunday (Aug. 8, 2021) after suffering a stroke. He was at home, comforted by his family. Chester was born Dec. 18, 1935, the son of the late Rudolph and Eva Pawlowski Halgas. Chester grew up in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, where he met his wife after studying chemical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. They built and raised their family in Allegany, New York Chester had an accomplished career and was the director of environmental health for the Cattaraugus County Health Department for 27 years. During that same time he built a successful family rental property business. He had a passion for nature and spent much of his spare time boating, exploring, and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending time with his family, friends and beloved Shih Tzus. Chester embraced retired life at age 55 and relocated shortly after to St. Petersburg, where together with Julia, they spent most of their time entertaining friends at Town Shores and family while boating, fishing and exploring little islands in the Gulf. Chester also loved the mountains, spending his retired summer months in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where he loved finding new places to explore and share with his wife, children, and grandchildren. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Chester is survived by his five children, Barbara Wilson, Doris Hidalgo-Mota, Patty (Mike) Brandow, Michael Halgas and Mary (Brian) Kasprzyk; his seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. There will be a memorial/celebration of life for immediate family. Donations may be made to Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.
