Working together to help Philadelphia public schools thrive and students succeed
Mission Statement:
We identify, coordinate and connect philanthropic resources through effective public-private partnerships— to leverage investments in local public schools. We target strategic priorities that have an impact on the success of students regardless of their zip code, family income, or circumstances.
At the Fund for the School District of Philadelphia, we believe that all of Philadelphia’s public school children deserve an opportunity to become a part of a strong, productive, and sustainable future for our city.
In 2022, we were delighted to welcome Dr. Tony B. Watlington Sr., Ed.D. as the new Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia. Dr. Watlington’s first day was June 16, 2022.
Dr. Watlington was chosen by the Philadelphia Board of Education after an exhaustive six-month nationwide search which launched with 48 public listening sessions including more than 50 community partners, and culminated in a series of in-person and live-streamed roundtables and public town halls with the final candidates.
Prior to joining the district, Dr. Watlington served as superintendent of North Carolina’s Rowan-Salisbury School District, serving over 18,000 students and families. Rowan-Salisbury has a history of innovation, and became a national model for education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lauded for his commitment to collaboration, equity, and excellence, we are excited to partner with Dr. Watlington in the years ahead to ensure that the critical needs of our public school students are met, and that every child has the opportunity to become a productive and successful member of our thriving community.
We invite you to continue to partner with us in this crucial mission, and to ensure that Dr. Watlington – and our precious young people – are set on a path to success.
Thank you for your loyal support!

On March 4th, 2022, Wawa celebrated a year of partnership with The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia by providing lunch, drinks, and giveaways to the nearly 250 bus drivers and garage operators in the District. The festive luncheon was one of many “Catering to Our Communities” events Wawa held on National Employee Appreciation Day to recognize unsung heroes in its operating area. The event also commemorated a year of collaboration between Wawa, the school district, and The Fund, which includes Wawa’s 2021 donation of 3,000 appreciation kits to essential employees like food service and maintenance workers at the height of the pandemic, and their recent gift of 80,000 COVID-19 test kits to help keep students and teachers safely in their classrooms.
Wawa shared highlights of the special event on social media, featuring heartfelt messages of appreciation and must-see footage of mascot Wally Goose dancing with district drivers!
BY THE NUMBERS
$818,400 in in-kind contributions; 80,000 test kits delivered; 250 transportation workers celebrated
In February of 2022, the Hess Foundation made an incredibly generous gift of $250,000 to support the construction of a new rooftop play space at George W. Childs' elementary school in the Point Breeze section of Philadelphia, and to help revitalize an aging schoolyard at the Mary McLeod Bethune School in North Philadelphia’s Hunting Park-East Tioga community.
$250,000 contributed; 2 schools impacted; over 850 students to benefit annually
In July of 2022, The Tobias Harris Charitable Fund (THCF) donated $150,000 to support summer literacy programs for District students, bringing their lifetime giving to The Fund to over $350,000. Over the holidays, THCF partnered with Giant, Eat Right Philly, and The Fund to donate 375 turkeys and meal bags to district families in need. In addition, the Philadelphia 76ers forward and his family personally gifted five families at the Bethune School all of the items on their holiday wish lists.
BY THE NUMBERS
By the Numbers: $150,000 contribution; 375 Thanksgiving meals; 5 holiday wish lists fulfilled
After facilitating the donation of $80,000 in school supplies to five schools throughout the District, Quinta Brunson, Philadelphia native and creator and star of ABC’s hit show 'Abbott Elementary' visited Comegys Elementary in Southwest Philadelphia in February of 2022 to surprise third grade teacher Xiomarra Robinson alongside the students who love her. During Quinta’s visit, Scholastic donated $20,000 worth of books for students; Wells Fargo gifted $40,000 to the school; Staples donated a truckload of paper, pens, markers, printers, dry erase boards and school supplies; while Mural Arts Philadelphia created a special mural for the entire school community to enjoy.
Brunson, the daughter of a schoolteacher, created her breakout sitcom based on her experience at Philadelphia public schools. Brunson has said 'Abbott Elementary' reflects “what teachers really go through while also having heart and humor.”

$80,000+ in school supplies; $40,000 contribution; $20,000 in books, 1 mural created
In partnership with celebrity and philanthropist Dave Burd (aka Lil Dicky), our family of donors gave more than $21,000 in the weeks leading up to Giving Tuesday. This funding supported Philly FUNDamentals projects ranging from science kits to literacy programming to outdoor classroom essentials.
With the help of Dave Burd's generous challenge match, kids at George Nebinger Elementary received enhanced literacy instruction; the Kirkbride School raised crucial dollars to transform a seldom-used patio into an outdoor learning space; children at Kenderton Elementary earned enough to plant their own community garden; and Masterman secondary schoolers raised money to participate in the Model UN; among other impacts.
$21,342 in giving; 7 District schools impacted
In February of 2022, FCM Hospitality (FCM), and eight of the hospitality company’s restaurants – Liberty Point, Morgan’s Pier, Harper’s Garden, Lola’s Garden, Rosy’s Taco Bar, The Garden at Cherry Street Pier, Craft Hall and Juno – announced their $50,000 donation of crucial food and supplies to all twelve culinary arts programs in the School District of Philadelphia. FCM’s owner, Avram Hornik, made the donation to address the difficulty schools were experiencing with the timely delivery of food and supplies due to nationwide supply-chain issues and labor shortages, coupled with the abrupt cancellation of the previous supplier contract days before the start of the school year.
Hornik coordinated with School District of Philadelphia's Career and Technical Education director, schools, and the Fund for the School District of Philadelphia to identify the best way to mobilize his support, creating a system in which FCM provided food and supplies directly to the culinary programs at their request through the end of the school year. The $50,000 gift helped more than 730 students receive the hands-on training they needed to prepare for careers in the culinary industry.

On March 26th, 2022 the Wharton Council and Wharton Roadrunners held the 10th Annual Wharton 5K, which benefited The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia for the first time! It was a triumphant return for The University of Pennsylvania’s largest 5K event, which had not been held in-person in more than two years.
Fund vice president Kathy Rubino and former development associate George Fisher were among the happy participants. They joined a committed group of community members and athletes – as well as Penn students, faculty, and staff – who helped raise more than $10,000 in support of Philadelphia’s public school students.
