SERVING GOD AND OUR STUDENTS As I look back on the past year, I’m filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude for the accomplishments at the seminary during one of the most trying times in memory. The pandemic wreaked havoc in so many ways, but God’s guiding hand provided a path forward, and the spirit and fortitude of the Fuller community was a tremendous blessing.

The successes and achievements outlined in this Year in Review highlight many of the ways in which Fuller served our students during the past year and worked to expand God’s kingdom here on earth.

The profound academic and theological foundations provided by our School of Mission and Theology and our School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy, partnered with the innovations and practical formation from our centers and institutes, mean that a Fuller education is more distinct and important than ever.

As we look toward the future and the roadmap offered by FULLER NEXT, our new strategic plan, we are excited about

the opportunities to expand our reach to the far corners of the world. With new degree programs and new technology, Fuller remains committed to serving and equipping our students to answer God’s call through one Fuller ecology that encompasses spiritual, academic, vocational, and emotional formation.

In addition, we will continue to provide expanded resources to those non-degreeseeking learners who benefit from continued formation as they serve in their communities in a variety of capacities.

REIMAGINING SEMINARY EDUCATION Where we’ve been, where we’re going

D

espite the pandemic and accompanying challenges, Fuller continued to equip, inspire, educate, and form Christian leaders to answer God’s call. We were guided by FULLER NEXT, our new strategic plan approved in May 2021.

The overarching theme of FULLER NEXT is to provide indispensable, formational education for diverse Christian leaders everywhere. This commitment to indispensable formation, along with sustainable financial planning and discipline, are key to Fuller’s future success. To help ensure this, Fuller refreshed its flagship programs to provide practice-focused degrees still rooted in Christ-centered, rigorous scholarship, and offered online resources for learners through FULLER Equip. New degrees like the Master of Arts in Justice and Advocacy value student experience in the field before they even get to the classroom, and offer a vibrant network of change makers to support them well beyond graduation.

The seminary also committed to increasing recruitment and retention, growing endowment and annual giving, resizing the Pasadena campus, expanding the Phoenix and Houston programs and outreach, and implementing strong financial management and institutional disciplines.

Among the other highlights of the past year: • The Schools of Theology and Intercultural Studies were reconstituted into one school, the School of Mission and Theology.

• For the first time in nearly a decade, Fuller delivered a balanced financial position in FY21, with positive net cash provided by Operating Activities.

• Enrollment increased by double-digit percentages for the Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy and doctoral SOPMFT, Doctor of Ministry, and Korean Doctor of Global Leadership degrees.

• Two new degrees were launched, the Master of Arts in Justice and Advocacy (MJA) and the Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy (DMFT), meeting their respective enrollment targets.

• The six Leadership Formation Centers exceeded their goals in equipping leaders nationally and globally, and FULLER Equip reached an all-time high of training 11,000 learners, representing 50 percent more growth than the previous year.

• The Pasadena campus resumed on-campus classes in the fall after 17 months of online instruction due to the pandemic.

• WSCUC approved FULLER NEXT as a substantive change in institutional mission as well as the new MJA and DMFT programs. WSCUC also approved Fuller to offer the PhD in Intercultural Studies as an on-site or distance-learning program, subject to ATS residency requirements.

• Fuller spearheaded creation of the International Theological Consortium, which allows Fuller students to take classes with faculty from three other seminaries—in Colombia, Egypt, and the Philippines.

A NEW ROADMAP FOR THE FUTURE Fuller Chief Operating Officer Ted Cosse (pictured, left) shares the vision and plans for the seminary: As a seminary with exceptional impact and reach, Fuller has both an opportunity and responsibility to respond and to lead.

This past year, the Board of Trustees approved a new strategic plan, FULLER NEXT. This roadmap for the seminary’s future includes refurbishing and renovating the Pasadena campus, as well as revitalizing Fuller campuses in Houston and Phoenix. It follows nine key initiatives supporting Fuller’s vision: to provide indispensable, formational education for diverse Christian leaders everywhere.

I. LISTENING AFRESH. We are listening afresh to God, and to local, national, and global voices and partners so that our formation of diverse students and learners responds to what God is doing in the church and in the world.

II. RETHINKING CHURCH IN THE 21ST CENTURY. We are rethinking church amid its many 21st-century crises and opportunities in order to better partner in the pioneering work of churches and supporting organizations, to equip our students and learners to serve in their local contexts, and to provide visionary leadership to those looking to Fuller for direction.

III. DEVELOPING AND REFRESHING DEGREES. We are refreshing our existing degrees and developing new degrees that are compelling and in high demand by both our students and their current and future employers. These degrees include integrated, formative learning experiences that prepare a diverse student body to serve and lead with theological depth, emotional health, and multicultural competence.

IV. EMPOWERING LEARNERS. We are empowering diverse learners on a large scale through innovative resources, premier training, and strategic partnerships that address the challenges and opportunities facing the church and world.

V. CELEBRATING AND GROWING GIVING. We are creating a joyful and generous community of financial supporters who enthusiastically contribute to the transformation and equipping of learners and students who change the church and world.

VI. DEVELOPING AND SUPPORTING FACULTY. We are developing the most diverse and supported faculty in Fuller’s history, committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and practice for students, learners, churches, academies, and communities.

VII. DEVELOPING AND SUPPORTING STAFF. We are creating a sense of belonging for a diverse staff who will be equipped, empowered, and equitably compensated to design and implement Fuller’s plans and strategies.

VIII. REIMAGINING OUR CAMPUSES. Our campuses are being reimagined and redesigned around tomorrow’s financial, technological, and environmental realities for the benefit of our students, staff, and faculty.

IX. OPTIMIZING PROCESSES, PROCEDURES, STRUCTURES. We are optimizing processes, procedures, and structures across Fuller to better steward our resources, achieve long-term sustainability, and provide excellent service to students and learners.

Scholarships for AY 2020–2021 953 Students Received Aid $5.97 Million Awarded

SCHOOL OF Mission and Theology A year ago, Fuller created the School of Mission and Theology (SMT) through the reconstitution of the Schools of Theology and Intercultural Studies. Under the direction of Dean Amos Yong, SMT continues to provide the deep theological and missiological foundations for which Fuller is known. Along with the addition of the two new degrees, other highlights from the past year made possible by donor support are: • The addition of several new faculty members. They are: - Edgar “Trey” Clark III, PhD, who joined the faculty as assistant professor of preaching, bringing 18 years of ministry experience in diverse contexts in Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, and Southern California.

- Michaela O’Donnell, PhD, who joined the faculty as assistant professor of marketplace leadership. She also serves as executive director of Fuller’s Max De Pree Center for Leadership.

- Soong-Chan Rah, ThD, who was appointed the Robert Munger Professor of Evangelism. Most recently, he served as the Milton B. Engebretson Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park Theological Seminary.

• An additional 20 percent of the Fall ’21 incoming Master of Divinity class was supported financially by a new institutional scholarship program.

• Scholarship support was expanded for Doctor of Ministry students through the enhanced Charles E. Fuller Annual Scholarship program.

• 32 SMT faculty members received research and development assistance. Additional support was provided for up to 10 endowed faculty chair installations (which were postponed until 2022 because of the pandemic).

• One student received the Evangelizing China Fellowship grant.

• Fuller spearheaded creation of the International Theological Consortium, which allows Fuller students to take classes with faculty from three other seminaries—in Colombia, Egypt, and the Philippines.

• Nearly three dozen Fuller SMT faculty members published more than 60 books, papers, and other materials during the past year.

New Degrees ... Generous donors provided the funding for Fuller to implement

two new degree programs in the School of Mission and Theology during the past year. They are:

Doctor of Global Leadership (DGL). This professional, four-year doctorate is designed for leaders in transnational mission organizations and pastors or missionaries engaged in entrepreneurial change to deepen their calling and advance their mission.

The Communal Reading of Scripture A Signature Practice of Fuller Seminary

Through generous donor support, Fuller began The Communal Reading of Scripture project, the seminary’s commitment to gather people from all over the world to hear the Scriptures together. This practice has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response and now includes a FULLER Equip online course for a deeper connection and reflection. This degree is designed for practitioners who have experience working in justice and advocacy in a variety of settings including community organizing, congregational ministry, health and mental health care, nonprofit management, law, public policy, business, and the arts. SCHOOL OF Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy The School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy (SOPMFT) continues to evolve to meet the needs of future mental health professionals. Ted Cosse, PsyD, chief operating officer for Fuller Seminary, is also dean of SOPMFT, executive director of Fuller Psychological and Family Services (FPFS), and associate professor of clinical psychology.

Among the highlights he shared for the past year that were made possible by donor support: • Clinical Psychology Department - The doctoral cohort for Fall 2021 is 40 students, an 82 percent increase over last year’s incoming cohort of 22. Further, this incoming cohort represents the most diverse SOPMFT doctoral cohort in Fuller’s history.

- Completed applications were up 85 percent over the prior recruiting year and acceptance rates were higher than expected. Both of these point to the indispensability of the PsyD and PhD degrees as perceived by prospective students and the clients/organizations they eventually will serve.

• Marriage and Family Therapy Department - Fall 2020 enrollment was up 37 percent in the MFT program and the Fall 2021 Pasadena MFT cohort is 71 students, which ties the largest class size in the history of the MFT program (tying the record set last year).

- Fuller approved a new Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy degree program this past year and the first cohort began in Fall 2021. This degree is designed for licensed mental health clinicians seeking to deepen their clinical expertise and further their professional training. This hybrid (online and in-person) program provides advanced clinical training and greater knowledge in assessment and research for already licensed therapists practicing in clinical settings, including private practice, community agencies, schools, hospitals, or universities.

• Mental Health Services - Due to the pandemic, FPFS moved all clients to Fuller Telehealth, an online platform for conducting therapy and assessment. Despite this, client sessions increased and FPFS provided approximately 1,400 therapy sessions each month. FPFS resumed in-person therapy sessions this fall.

The School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy added three new faculty members during the past year.

Cedric Williams, PhD, was named director of the new Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy program and assistant professor of Marriage and Family Therapy. A Fuller alumnus, Dr. Williams is founder and chief executive officer of Legacy Consulting & Research Group LLC and serves as the diversity, equity, and inclusion chairperson for the American Psychological Association, Division 13, Society of Consulting Psychology. Dr. Williams also has served in the United States Army (active and reserve) since 2002 and is an Airborne and Ranger-qualified Infantry officer who has provided leadership to soldiers in a variety of settings.

Nancy Frigaard, DMin, was named director of the Fuller Arizona Marriage and Family Therapy program and instructor in the practice of marriage and family therapy. Dr. Frigaard is a Fuller alumna and a graduate of the inaugural cohort of the MFT program in Phoenix. She taught at Arizona Christian University in the family studies and psychology departments and founded Freedom Family Counseling, specializing in couples, child, adolescent, and family therapy. She also is the author of “Restoration Therapy for Kids: Playing Their Way from Pain to Peace” (Routledge, forthcoming).

Alesia Starks, MS, joined the faculty as an instructor of marriage and family therapy.

A licensed marriage and family therapist, she has worked in community mental health and Department of Mental Health contexts, applying her gifts as a clinician, curriculum developer, and trainer. Her areas of clinical expertise span a range of specializations including domestic violence and complex trauma.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION In October 2020, Fuller named Alexis Abernethy, PhD, a psychology professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology, as its first chief of diversity, equity, and inclusion. In this role, Dr. Abernethy (left) was charged with advancing Fuller’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence in partnership with the Senior Leadership Team, ethnic center directors, Diversity Council, staff, faculty, and students.

In her report to the Fuller Seminary Board of Trustees in May 2021, Dr. Abernethy highlighted the following from the “Strategic Approach Toward Inclusive Excellence, 2020–2022” document, updated and adopted in November 2020.

• The Clinical Psychology program recruited the most diverse class in the history of the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy.

• The Fuller Experiences Survey (formerly the Climate Survey) revealed generally positive results, with fewer incidents of negative behavior or safety concerns than the previous year.

Although COVID-19 social distancing/virtual mandates significantly disrupted normal campus realities, positive improvement trends speak to an improvement in overall community well-being and safety. Annual Inclusive Excellence Grants were awarded to eight faculty members.

The IE Faculty Development Group offered the first of two sessions on decolonizing syllabi in the Winter Quarter.

• A cluster hire was initiated that seeks to address the underrepresentation of women faculty and faculty of color.

The Senior Leadership Team approved increased support for translation services for Spanish and Korean speaking students and the Diversity Council revised existing policies to update language related to the inclusion and empowerment of women.

In July 2021, Oscar García-Johnson, PhD, (left) who previously headed Fuller’s Centro Latino, was named to succeed Dr. Abernethy as DEI chief after she was appointed chief academic officer at Fuller.

CHAIRS AND PROFESSORS Fuller continues to attract and seek premier scholars and theologians for faculty positions in Pasadena, Houston, and Phoenix. Generous donors have come alongside Fuller to support and endow several chairs this past year. These include: • Mary and Dale Andringa Executive Director Chair in the Max De Pree Center for Leadership.

This chair is filled by De Pree Executive Director Michaela O’Donnell (pictured below).

• Cliff and Joyce Penner Chair for the Formation of Emotionally Healthy Leaders in the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy. This newly endowed chair is expected to be filled in 2022.

• Dean and Rebecca Stephan Chair in Chinese Studies, who will serve as academic dean of the Chinese Studies Center. This newly endowed chair is expected to be filled in 2022.

• Steve and Meritt Sawyer Chairs for the International Theological Consortium. This consortium, spearheaded by Fuller, is an experimental partnership with seminaries in Egypt, the Philippines, and Colombia that allows Fuller students to take classes with faculty from these other seminaries. These partners are: Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo, Asian Theological Seminary in Manila, and Fundación Universitaria Seminario Bíblico de Colombia.

• Evelyn and Frank Freed Chief of Spiritual Formation and Integration. Fuller psychology professor Brad Strawn, PhD, was named to this newly created role and leads development and implementation of a seminary-wide strategy aiming to ensure that theological, psychological, and intercultural wisdom are broadly and deeply integrated into Fuller’s overall curriculum.

ALUMNI RELATIONS The Fuller Alumni Relations team provides resources and support to Fuller's more than 40,000 global alumni. Donor support helps to: • Keep Fuller's alumni informed and engaged via various communication channels.

Among the highlights of the past year: • The online Fuller Alumni Network continued to grow, with 2,417 people linked in.

• The Fuller Alumni Regional Contacts program was expanded, with 11 people now participating across the country and around the world.

• Regional events were organized by Alumni Regional Contacts to build the global Fuller community.

• “Just Show Up” virtual engagement opportunities were offered with faculty authors from each school to listen to book readings and engage in discussion with faculty and alumni.

• Despite COVID, virtual opportunities were provided for alumni to gather during Fuller conferences/symposia such as the Integration Symposium, Missiology Lectures, and Payton Lectures.

LEADERSHIP FORMATION CENTERS The need for practical Christian leadership formation and training is greater than ever.

During the past year, Fuller continued to step into this void through its Leadership Formation Centers and FULLER Equip, the seminary's signature digital learning platform that empowers leaders in diverse vocations with accessible courses created by Fuller faculty and other experts. Among the highlights of these centers this year:

BREHM CENTER FOR WORSHIP, THEOLOGY, AND THE ARTS

FULLER CENTER FOR SPIRITUAL FORMATION (FCSF)

• Brehm Film engaged a record 12,000 people with the screening of Academy Award-winning film, “Minari.”

• The Well-Formed Worship Leader cohort filled over capacity, led by Ed Willmington, Jennifer Ackerman, and Julie Tai. • The Brehm Artist Residency hosted a record 13 churches (with over 40 artists and pastors) from across the US in its first online cohort, grossing $10,000 this fiscal year.

• Brehm Residency No. 7 launched in October 2021.

• A new, fully online Certificate in Theology and the Arts launched on FULLER Equip.

• Micah Groups transformed from a grant-dependent ministry to a revenuegenerating, movement-catalyzing learning experience.

• Through the core program, Fuller Formation Groups, 289 individuals entered biblical community and engaged in a year-long journey to establish rhythms of spiritual and missional practice. More than 1,400 people have been formed in the past four years.

• Fuller Formation Groups were fully translated and contextualized for Spanish language communities. The first two cohorts in Latin America were launched with mission partners International Justice Mission and Living Water International. A bilingual cohort was launched in Oakland, and a pilot cohort based in Austin, Texas, concluded.

• FCSF is excited to have also extended its work into Europe, featuring a new partnership with the Center for Church Multiplication, the church planting arm of the Church of England.

• A new partnership with the Henri Nouwen Legacy Trust was established and features the life and spiritual theology of Henri Nouwen.

CHURCH PLANTING INITIATIVE • The Church Planting Initiative launched a new website at churchplanting.fuller.edu.

• The inaugural Church Planting Coaching Certificate launched with 13 participants.

• A monthly network leader roundtable hosts church planting leaders from dozens of denominations and networks.

• The PlanterMatch.org website expanded to match planters with both coaches and networks.

DE PREE CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP • De Pree reached more than 150,000 people in the marketplace via speaking, podcast downloads, website views, and newsletter opens.

• Life for Leaders, De Pree’s free daily digital devotional, continued to expand, helping even more readers go deeper in their understanding of God and calling as it addresses real life issues.

• The Church Leadership Institute was established. It works to equip church leaders with the tools to lead faithful change in today’s world.

• New research continued on Third Third, which aims to help people in the “third-third” of their lives to flourish. The potential impact is immense. Their contribution will make a magnificent difference in businesses, nonprofits, neighborhoods, families, churches, schools, and the wider world.

• De Pree offered a new cohort experience for marketplace leaders called Road Ahead, designed to give them space to self-reflect, recharge, and explore new possibilities as they consider what and whom God is calling them to in their work.

FULLER YOUTH INSTITUTE (FYI) • FYI’s newest book, based on landmark FYI research, 3 Big Questions That Change Every Teenager, enjoyed a strong launch, selling approximately 10,000 copies in the first two months.

• Through family articles, podcasts, and blog posts that flowed from the launch of 3 Big Questions That Change Every Teenager, FYI equipped more than 40,000 parents, stepparents, and grandparents to point young people to Jesus’ answers to their top questions.

• The FYI team served more than 70,000 leaders in 2021 through virtual and in-person speaking, as well as self-paced digital courses.

• The “FYI on Youth Ministry” podcast trained more than 15,000 listeners.

• FYI began the TENx10 collaborative discipleship movement, aimed at equipping churches and ministries to make faith matter more for 10 million young people over the next 10 years.

• The in-depth TENx10 and FYI cohort training, guiding systemic change for entire churches, equipped more than

1,000 leaders from 280 churches across the US, Australia, Scotland, and China.

THRIVE CENTER FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT • Thrive Center moved out of the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy and under the umbrella of the Leadership Formation Division, allowing it to take part in actionable research, develop a business plan to engage leaders and their communities, and pursue product development in the form of resources that can be used by those leaders and communities.

• Pamela Ebstyne King, PhD, was named executive director of the Thrive Center.

The Peter L. Benson Professor of Applied Developmental Science, Dr. King continues to serve as a professor and a PhD program chair in the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy.

• Thrive continued to develop new content, including a book, as well as digital, print, audio, and video resources to be distributed through Thrive Center, Fuller, and other external channels.

ACADEMIC CENTERS AND INSTITUTES Fuller’s academic centers and institutes, housed in the seminary's two schools, continued to provide meaningful preparation and experiences that ensure Fuller students are equipped for their work in the world. The centers and institutes are:

CENTER FOR ADVANCED THEOLOGICAL STUDIES (CATS) School of Mission and Theology CATS seeks to prepare women and men to contribute to the global church in a variety of leadership roles, especially as educators, researchers, and other teachers and agents of the church and its mission.

CATS programs promote graduate work at advanced levels of scholarship, research, and reflection.

CENTER FOR MISSIOLOGICAL RESEARCH (CMR) School of Mission and Theology CMR draws a community of scholars from around the world to address seminal missiological issues. It supports research and equips students at the highest level for faithful leadership in missiological education and practice. CMR manages the annual Missiology Lectures in the fall and organizes colloquia and other events for the research community.

GLOBAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE (GRI) School of Mission and Theology GRI operates out of Fuller’s Center for Missiological Research and offers a fellowship to post-doctoral non-Western Christian scholars, enabling them to

undertake final-stage research at Fuller and complete texts for their teaching ministry in their context in the Majority World.

RICHARD JOHN MOUW INSTITUTE OF FAITH AND PUBLIC LIFE School of Mission and Theology Named after Fuller’s longtime former president, this new institute’s mission is to advance public theological research and convene strategic conversations at the intersection between the church, academy, and culture. Matthew Kaemingk, PhD, was named the Richard John Mouw Chair of Faith and Public Life and serves as the first director of the institute.

TRAVIS RESEARCH INSTITUTE (TRI) School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy TRI is where important new ideas are explored at the intersection of science, psychology, and theology. Research in the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy at Fuller takes place within the context of TRI, which has established and maintains an infrastructure that encourages large-scale collaborative research and facilitates obtaining funding for a variety of projects.

ETHNIC CENTERS Fuller’s five ethnic centers provide insights, support, and practical formation that prepare students more fully for their ministries. During the past year, donor support provided a wealth of opportunities for the ethnic centers. Among the highlights:

CENTER FOR ASIAN AMERICAN THEOLOGY AND MINISTRY (ASIAN AMERICAN CENTER) • Offered the seminary’s Asian American students, alumni, and church partners a variety of courses, certificates, resources, and formation experiences.

CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF HISPANIC CHURCH AND COMMUNITY (CENTRO LATINO) • In Fall 2020, Centro Latino started its first cohort completely online, with nineteen students from different parts of the United States and Latin America. In Fall 2021, the second cohort began, with eighteen students.

• Centro Latino expanded its work through a professional certificate program focused on the migration crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Certified Professional in Migration Crisis brought together more than 170 students from fifteen different countries.

• Alexia Salvatierra, DMiss, was named academic dean of Centro Latino.

KOREAN STUDIES CENTER • Provided academic, social, and spiritual development for students, faculty, and graduates in relation to Korean churches and through the continuing relationship between Fuller and Korean churches around the world.

• Has graduated about 1,200 students to date.

WILLIAM E. PANNELL CENTER FOR BLACK CHURCH STUDIES • Twelve students attended the Emerging Black Scholars (EBS) program, which includes sessions with Black scholars and practitioners, a writing retreat, book stipend, and opportunities for publications and internships.

• $4,000 in research stipends was provided to students assisting in the archival research of the Pannell Center’s history.

• Two Pannell Fellowships at $15,000/year; two EBS Scholarships at $5,000/year; and one Barbara Wilson Scholarship at $3,000/year were awarded.

STAFF HIGHLIGHTS As in any well-run organization, a professional, effective, and dedicated staff is essential. That was especially true at Fuller during the pandemic, when the staff’s flexibility, adaptability, and strategic problem-solving helped the seminary thrive and even flourish.

Despite the unprecedented challenges, Fuller was able to quickly transition completely to online classes at Pasadena, and the staff led those efforts with creative solutions and superior customer service. Many staff members quickly shifted to working from home while others continued to show up in person to keep Fuller’s three campuses—in Pasadena, Houston, and Phoenix—running efficiently and productively.

Among the other contributions this past year, Fuller’s staff: • Led and implemented changes at Fuller that put the seminary in a position to be effective in its mission through further pandemic challenges and beyond.

• Continued to deliver quality service to students, with 98 percent of student respondents in the Fall ’21 quarter reporting high levels of satisfaction with service from staff.

• Deepened their commitment to good stewardship of Fuller’s finances and other critical resources.

• Creatively designed programs and content that allowed the seminary to engage and connect with churches, nonprofits, and other organizations.

• Provided their knowledge and expertise to support faculty and students with coursework as changes were made due to the pandemic.

• Significantly improved the student experience by collaborating across departments to shorten response times to student inquiries and reorganizing responsibilities so support is more customized to students in their particular degree programs.

• Innovatively pivoted to produce virtual events, as staff worked from their own homes to engage with Fuller students, faculty, staff, and donors and connect with the seminary’s global audience.

• Collaborated to improve the student-resident experience, resulting in a double-digit increase in occupancy rates in Pasadena Fuller-owned student housing to 95 percent.

FINANCIALS AT A GLANCE During the meeting of the Board of Trustees in June 2020, the board adopted and resolved a balanced budget for fiscal year 2021 (July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021). This was a significant undertaking by Fuller and was the first step toward financial sustainability and an imperative to FULLER NEXT, the seminary’s strategic plan.

At Fuller’s Board of Trustees meeting October 20-22, 2021, the following was reported: 1. For the first time in nearly a decade, Fuller delivered a balanced financial position in FY21, with a positive net cash provided by Operating Activities of $4,127,000 vs. prior year FY20, which had a negative cash use of ($4,031,000).

2. Fuller was successful in delivering unrestricted change in Net Assets of approximately $1.5 million (excluding gain on sale of real estate property $15.7 million) vs. a deficit in change in Net Assets in FY20 of approximately ($5.3 million).

3. For FY21, Total Change in Net Assets (both restricted and unrestricted) was approximately $59.6 million vs. FY20, which saw a decrease of ($12.2 million). This was largely due to strong market performance on investments and the endowment along with the gain on sale of real property.

4. In FY21, Tuition revenue was $2.3 million ahead of budget due to strong enrollment in all quarters this academic year.

5. Unrestricted Gifts & Grants revenue was ahead of budget by approximately $475,000 due to several generous gifts and a grant received at calendar year end.

6. Housing revenue was less than budget by approximately $487,000 due to the impact of COVID-19 and Fuller’s transition to 100 percent remote learning.

7. Fuller’s Endowment Withdrawal was less than budget because of the reduction in draw due to a quasi-endowment write-off.

8. Salaries, Wages & Benefits was higher than budget due to under budgeting in several benefits accounts including Severance, Medical Insurance, and Benefit Clearing.

9. Supplies & Equipment was under budget due to the impact of COVID-19 and Fuller’s faculty and staff working remotely.

10. Maintenance & Repairs was over budget due to expenses for HVAC repair, plumbing, interior painting, and flooring.

11. Payments were made to The Fuller Foundation for payroll and other expenses in connection with the Development and Alumni teams becoming employees of The Fuller Foundation as of January 1, 2021.

Based on prior analysis of the impact of scholarship dollars, Fuller anticipates an increase in tuition revenue by approximately 50 cents for every dollar of scholarships given. This is due to students benefiting from lower tuition cost and registering for additional courses, which also helps with their pace to graduation.

Because of the strategic implementation of scholarship funds over this past year, Fuller saw some of its highest levels of enrollment growth in more than ten years.
