The players, staff and myself are excited to get the 2017-18 season started and continue the winning tradition that as Ghostriders we are so passionate to accomplish. A big thank you to Barb and the rest of our hard working board of directors, without you this team would not be able to survive.

As Ghostriders we pride ourselves on not only playing great hockey, but being even better citizens in the community. My goal as your Coach/GM is to teach these young minds as much about life skills as hockey skills! To our loyal and best fans in the KIJHL welcome back to the Fernie Memorial Arena!!!

e have a new member on our board this year, welcome aboard Sara Moulton! Along with the past years board members we are very excited about our upcoming season.

The hard work and dedication of our volunteers has provided our organization with a foundation rich in team play, commitment and integrity.

These attributes are carried over to our team, which is led by Head Coach/General Manager Craig Mohr. Along with the commitment are the billet families who graciously invite the young men into their homes and have them as part of their family.

We also are fortunate to have so many dedicated community members, sponsors and City of Fernie employees and council who are committed to seeing the team remain successful behind the scene.

Such dedication from all the people who help the team in anyway makes the Fernie Ghostriders a more successful team on and off the ice.

The world of junior hockey moves fast, as players become eligible at 16 before aging out after their 20th year. We asked a few former Ghostrider captains to fill us in about what they’re up to now and what advice they’d give to the 2017-18 squad…

Community Champions Being a Fernie Ghostrider is more than just taking to the ice! As proud community members, they are often found helping out at a variety of charitable events throughout the season.

Get twice the ICE with Ghostriders season passes

N

ew for the 2017-18 season, Fernie Ghostriders season pass holders will now also receive 15% off individual game tickets at Kootenay ICE games in Cranbrook.

Since changing ownership in the spring of 2017, the new ICE management have been working to foster renewed positive relationships with the KIJHL clubs in their neighbouring East Kootenay communities, including Invermere, Kimberley and Fernie. This includes the creation of reciprocal discounts on tickets and joint events throughout the season.

“This is another meaningful partnership for us and the hockey community in the East Kootenays,” explained Reid Mitchell, Director of Corporate Partnerships and Fan Experience of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club in an August 18 press release. “Joining communities through the game of hockey is a key driver in these types of partnerships and we’re very excited to share that same vision with the Fernie Ghostriders and their fans.”

The new partnership with the Cranbrook-based ICE of the Western Hockey League (WHL) provides even more perks to Fernie fans who hold a season pass, in addition to the existing benefits of express entry and reserved seating in the Fernie Memorial Arena.

Prices for 2017-18 Fernie Ghostriders season passes are $230 for adults and $110 for senior/child/students, and can be purchased through the front desk and booster table at home games or from Fernie Auto Parts on Manitou Road.

Keeping the team healthy

T

wo high-school students now stand behind the home bench of Fernie’s Junior B Ghostriders team, ready to assist with any medical needs the team may have.

The Fernie Academy students, Andrew Craig and Cate Durham are excited to practice their skills throughout the hockey season.

Kayla Neufeld and Heather Lewis, athletic therapists at Fernie Athletic Therapy and also for the Fernie Ghostriders, thought it would be beneficial to take on two students in order to give them a real-world taste of what being an athletic therapist is all about.

The Fernie Ghostriders joined arms with The Fernie Academy this year for the first time. Both parties thought it would be a great opportunity for the students to learn.

These students will be tackling the on-bench first aid responsibilities, as well as traveling with the team during away games. They will be at the rink prior to games, to tape any players that need taping, etc.

Besides treating injuries during game time, an athletic therapists duties surrounding the hockey game involves taking part in pregame workouts, massages, stretches and taping. Post-game off-bench duties include injury rehabilitation.

These students will be partaking in much of the behind-the-scenes work in relation to injury rehabilitation.

Both Neufeld and Lewis were very excited to take on these two avid learners.

“I just (hope they get) as much experience and knowledge as they can,” said Neufeld. “Just give them that hands-on work experience and knowledge they can take on to whatever future careers they may hold.”

In 2004, while in university, Neufeld was given her first hands-on experience with a Midget AAA hockey team.

“I always knew I wanted to get into either the physiotherapy or athletic therapy field, and that was my ‘in’,” she said.

After graduating and becoming a certified physiotherapist, Neufeld moved to Fernie where she has practiced ever since.

One of the most challenging aspects of being an athletic therapist with a hockey team is keeping all the players healthy, explained Neufeld.

“We’ve had a couple seasons where we’ve been plagued with injuries, especially later in the season, and it’s just about keeping the players healthy and getting them back as quickly as I can,” said Neufeld.
