Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage licence, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage licence in B.C. Anyone under 19 years of age must first obtain the consent of both parents. No one under 16 years can be married without the consent of the Supreme or County Court. If one or both individuals were recently divorced within the last 31 days, proof of divorce must be provided. No licence is issued until the courts finalize a divorce, normally 31 days after the divorce decree is issued by the Courts. Arrange the Marriage Ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people. • To perform the religious ceremony, you can choose a religious representative who must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency, under the Marriage Act. • If you plan to have a civil ceremony, contact and book a

marriage commissioner as soon as possible once you set your wedding date. Register the Marriage • The marriage commissioner or religious representative who will perform the wedding ceremony will help complete the Marriage Registration Form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form will be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the marriage. Which name can I use? • After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. This does not result in a legal change of name or any automatic change to your identification records. If you choose to use hyphenated surnames, a legal Change of Name is required.

Create timelines for wedding planning

T

o help you get a better understanding of how to plan a wedding and when you should be making certain decisions, here’s a timeframe you can follow that should ensure that your wedding goes off as smoothly as possible. • 10 to 12 months before If you haven’t done this already, this is a good time to announce your engagement and introduce your respective families. Since most venues have busy wedding schedules, it is also important to book both as early as possible. • Six to nine months before This is the time when you want to start booking some services, such as a florist, caterer, a DJ/ band, and a photographer. This is also a good time to order gowns for both the bride and bridesmaids.

• Four to five months before This is a good time to decide on wedding invitations. Also, now is ideal to start hunting for a wedding cake by sampling a number of different bakeries. Now is when you should start looking for a tuxedo for the groom as well as the groomsmen. • Two to three months before Finalize your guest list and mail out your invitations. • One to two months before Schedule the first bridal-gown fitting. Also finalize the readings you’d prefer during the ceremony and mail them out to anyone who has agreed to do a reading. • Three to four weeks before Confirm your honeymoon arrangements and see if your wedding rings are ready. This is also when you should get your marriage licence and check the guest list to see who has and hasn’t RSVP’d.

Wedding bands are all about love and personality

M

uch more than just an ordinary ring, a wedding band is the concrete sign of your marital status. It is also a symbol of the romantic union between you and your soul mate. Not long ago, a future bride and groom would have chosen a simple ring to mark this new stage in their lives. Today, wedding bands are made in the image of the couple and of their era, coming in original shapes and colours. A wedding band should reflect your personality, since it will likely stay on your ring finger for the rest of your life. Choosing the right one can present quite a challenge and is a good reason why current fashion or impulse should never rule over personal preference. Wedding bands are now available in

yellow, white, or pink gold. There are no longer any set rules for these rings, and more and more bands are set with precious stones. Future brides used to avoid sapphires, rubies, and emeralds but these stones are now very much appreciated by those who like the idea of a colour to match their personality. Just remember that overly large stones should be avoided; a wedding band should always be elegant and fairly discreet. Rubies are particularly popular with couples. These precious stones are much rarer than diamonds and symbolize love, warmth, and vitality. The sparkle of the fiery colour also symbolizes the beating of the human heart. Diamonds and rubies mounted together on a wedding ring represent the perfect mix of fire and ice. PHOTO: Kyle Hamilton

Choose your bridal party carefully Pairing the right person with the right job might make the task of picking the wedding partyspecifically the maid of honour and best man- a bit easier.

A

popularity contest often comes into play when an engaged couple is selecting friends and family members to be part of their wedding party. Often there is great speculation surrounding who will be bestowed the honour of being a bridesmaid or groomsman and who will win the coveted spots of best man and maid of honour. Consider the responsibilities the maid of honour and the best man must uphold according to tradition. Best Man This is the groom’s right-hand man. He has a series of responsibilities, none which should be taken lightly. • Oversees the groomsmen, making sure they are on time for the ceremony, properly dressed and have their boutonnieres on the left lapel.

• Ensures that the groom is ready for the ceremony. • Introduces people and breaks the ice. • Holds the wedding rings. If a ring bearer will be used, it is suggested that the faux rings be tied to the pillow and the best man continues to hold the real things. • Ensures that the groom has the marriage licence and will subsequently be one of the witnesses to the marriage. • Returns the groom’s tuxedo to the rental place. • Arranges the bachelor party if one will be held. Maid of Honour The maid of honour- matron if the woman is married- will handle a number of functions for the bride and wedding party to reduce the amount of stress on the bride. • Helps address announcements or wedding invitations with the bride. • Arranges the bridal shower with other members of the bridal party and possibly the bride’s mother. • Makes sure the bridesmaids are aware of dress fittings and any responsibilities the bride has given them to do. • Assists the bride with her

Some husbands and wives, particularly those who both work outside the home, like to keep separate personal accounts for spending and holding a joint chequing account for household bills and a joint savings account for emergencies. It’s one way for each of you to retain some spending freedom and still cover your shared monthly expenses, but it isn’t thrifty if your bank charges you a hefty fee to maintain each account. -News Canada

Golden’s new, gorgeous, cathedral like hall

M

ore than two years ago, a group of dedicated volunteers got together and started making plans to renovate the Golden Civic Centre. After a stellar grand opening this past New Year’s, weekend bookings are flooding in to the facility for wedding receptions and more. The building offers something for everyone. “I think what we have now is a gorgeous hall. When you walk in the door there are gasps of excitement in response to the hall having a really old time feel to it, but it also presents modern amenities,” Bill Usher, Executive Director of Kicking Horse Culture said. “There is a cathedral-like feeling of being in a place which is very special.”

The history and grandeur of the Civic Centre makes people feel very at home in the building during events. The design of the building will also lend itself to wedding receptions for great indoor photography. “There is so much architectural

detail. A photographer will be able to take some beautiful photographs. The wood and design of the interior has an elegant feel to it, while at the same time it does not have a big city convention centre feel. It is very authentic to the region with the timber

frames and the fir floor. “In an area like Golden, which has so much natural beauty just outside anyone’s window, the Civic Centre now provides a large gathering place to celebrate and for people to enjoy themselves. People can come here for all the things on the outside but we can welcome them into a building which has a great history that harkens back to another time while having all the modern things they need,” Usher said. For more information about the Golden Civic Centre you can email to civiccentre@kickinghorseculture.ca or check out the Civic Centre section on the Kicking Horse Culture website at www.kickinghorseculture.ca. Wedding dress success For most brides-to-be, the choice of a dress is among the first and most important decisions in planning a wedding.

W

ith thousands of choices in every price range, finding the perfect wedding dress can be a difficult and time-consuming process. But by making some decisions before setting foot in a store, the search will be both easier and a whole lot more enjoyable. Start by knowing your limits. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend – and don’t forget to include all the little extras, such as undergarments, shoes, jewellery, veil, and/or hair ornaments. Next, take an inventory of your personal style. If you know that you’re not comfortable in strapless or sleeveless dresses, for example, you can immediately eliminate these options. The trick is to rule out a few

style options before hitting the magazines or stores and then be open to all other options. There will be no shortage of opinions – from mothers, sisters, friends, and store personnel – about your choice of a wedding dress, but the decision, ultimately, is the bride’s alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but reserve the right to choose the look that feels right to you. With so many potential options, you might want to consider bringing along a camera and taking photos of yourself in the dresses that could be “contenders.” Remember – your goal is to find a dress that flatters your body and expresses your personal style – not to fit into a particular size. Make-up tips Trends for the groom: tone-on-tone

I

f you have the means, entrust your makeup to an aesthetician. Make an appointment several weeks before the wedding for a trial session. If you prefer to do it yourself, don’t forget that you should still do a practice run. For your wedding day makeup, prepare your skin by applying a good moisturizer. Choose a good quality foundation that is not orangey and that blends perfectly with your skin. Opt for waterproof mascara. Choose a long-lasting lipstick and touch it up throughout the day with a quick swipe of lip gloss. A final touch: a few sprays of makeup fixative holds foundation and eye makeup in place while erasing any powdery effect.

O

n the wedding day, it may be true that all eyes are on the bride, but a well-dressed groom will still be appreciated. He is one of the main stars of this celebration, after all! A classy and unique suit is on the agenda; after those criteria, the groom should choose a suit he feels comfortable in, one that corresponds to his personal style and that is tailored to his body shape. For an impeccably fitted suit, the groom should have a last fitting, two or three weeks before the wedding. The fabric of the groom’s suit should be chosen according to the season and its overall style should match the tone of the wedding; a suit is perfect for an afternoon wedding, while a tuxedo is required for an evening event. When choosing a suit, think of it as an investment; it should signal sophistication and elegance rather than office-job functionality. Once a suit has been chosen, the next secret to a refined look lies in the tie. A contemporary finish requires a tone-on-tone tie that matches the colour of the shirt; it is a very attractive look, especially if both are pale in colour. Pale tone-on-tone will brighten up the complexion and highlight the smile. PHOTO: Kyle Hamilton

Flowers: a key element of a beautiful wedding

I

n many people’s minds, a successful wedding event often rests on the choice of flowers. The most beautiful of Mother Nature’s offerings, they are essential for setting the tone of the day. The trend in 2012 is towards smaller bouquets and less imposing floral centrepieces on the tables. Vases are appearing in all shapes, sizes, and materials: ceramic, zinc, glass, and stoneware, for example. Two timeless favourites, the rose and the orchid, adapt perfectly to all these different vases. Just imagine the elegant yet contemporary look these flowers have when arranged in a huge glass vase on a guestbook table or beside an altar.

The trend in bouquets is turning towards natural simplicity rather than extravagance. White, cream, and ivory flowers form the base, with

lots of greenery to set them off. Branches and leaves matched to different types of flowers are used to top off a glorious monochrome bouquet.

Regardless of the colours, tradition still rules the size of a bouquet. Choose a simple bouquet if your outfit is fairly ornate. If your gown is simple, exoticism and creativity can run wild. Round bouquets go well with tapered dresses, and cascading bouquets are perfect for gowns with trains. Lastly, one small hint to help you avoid a truly outdated effect: don’t try to match the colour of the flowers with the groom’s outfit or with the bridesmaid’s dresses.

Tips for choosing a wedding cake design

C

hoosing a wedding cake design can be one of the most exciting tasks that you are faced with during your engagement! Made from scratch with quality, fresh ingredients and decorated by a skilled cake designer, wedding cakes are remembered for years to come. Choosing a Decorator/ Baker: When choosing a baker, at least 4-6 months ahead of time, you want to ensure that your choice is someone who comes with a portfolio, references and one who can provide you with testimonials. Make sure that your cake decorator/baker is using a health inspected kitchen,

and is currently practising food safety! A quality cake decorator will want to meet with you to discuss your cake design. Personalizing Your Cake: Your wedding cake should match the overall look and feel of your wedding, menu and the décor of your reception. Do you like simple or classic? Unique or personalized? Shaped? Stacked? Fresh flowers or sugar flowers? Choosing a Flavour: When choosing a flavour, you may want to consider what season you are having your wedding in. Summer offers up lighter lemon and berry flavours, while the fall leads more to flavours

like pumpkin, or spice cake. When it comes to frosting your cake, you can choose from butter cream frosting, fondant, gum paste (used to create edible flowers), and royal icing. Pricing: The most important thing to remember when you are pricing out a cake is your budget. Wedding cakes are often priced on a per serving basis, and can vary anywhere from $2.00 per serving to $15.00! Delivery: When discussing details with your cake decorator, figure out who is responsible for delivery. Gift registries help couples build a home

A

marriage doesn’t just bring together two people in love, it also serves as the catalyst for merging their worlds into one. For couples who may have had homes separately from one another before getting married, they may be bringing along housewares, furniture and other décor that’s not necessarily of the cohesive style. This could mean it’s time to rethink what should be included in their home together. It typically involves registering for gifts from favourite stores as a way to stock up on items that reflect mutual taste as a couple. Today registries are an invaluable part of the wedding process, and one eagerly anticipated by couples. Registries needn’t be limited to just one type of retail outlet. In fact, a popular trend in wedding gifts is offering luxurious throws and pillows as opposed to traditional linens and housewares. Bridesand grooms-to-be are also registering at places, such as hardware stores if they desire miter saws as well as platinumrimmed china.

The bridal registry will take the guesswork out of wedding gifts, if it’s used correctly by the couple and their guests. Here are some guidelines for using registries successfully: • Register three to six months before the wedding. If you register earlier, some seasonal patterns and promotional items may be out of season on your wedding day.

initially go into stores alone or browse online to narrow down their selections, then return with their partners to make final decisions. • Take advantage of registry consultants. These experts are invaluable sources of advice about everything from wedding etiquette to recommended place setting amounts. • Register in a variety of price

• Give yourselves plenty of time to select what you like. These are important decisions, and you should think them over. Many brides-to-be

ranges. Include high-priced gifts for guests who can afford them and less expensive gifts for shower guests and guests on limited budgets.

• Use your imagination. China, crystal, silver, linen and housewares are classic wedding gifts- and perennial favourites with brides and grooms- but consider registering other items as well. • Don’t overlap. Register each item in one store only. Otherwise, you may get frazzled keeping track of gifts that have and haven’t been purchased or end up with duplicates. • Never announce your registration in wedding invitationsthis implies that gifts are as important to you as guests. Friends and family can make sure word gets out. • Keep a running gift list. Make a note of each item you receive, who sent it and any thoughts that come to mind when you unwrap it on a master note pad. This will make writing thank-you notes easier. Once gifts start piling up cards are easily misplaced, and your memory becomes unreliable.

rides and grooms have a few options when it comes to the music played at their ceremony and reception. Live musicians or DJs are often the entertainment of choice. The music of the wedding will set the tone for the event and keep guests entertained during key moments of the day. Music will be played while guests are dining and when there are opportunities for dancing. It’s essential to listen to musicians or deejays before hiring anyone to ensure what they’re offering will fit in with the wedding. Provide the musical entertainment with some information to further help the wedding go off without a hitch. This may include but not be limited to the following: * Names of all wedding party participants so they can be properly introduced. * Name of the married couple, including pronunciation of the last name, if necessary. * The title of the couple’s song. * The titles of songs to be danced with mother/son or father/daughter. * A listing of any preferred songs. * The title of a “spotlight PHOTO: Kyle Hamilton

dance” song. * Any music that is off-limits at the reception. * Special announcements that should be made, such as mentioning a guest’s birthday or another special event involving guests. In most cases, wedding musicians are professionals who have handled many weddings and are very accustomed to what should be done to make the night a memorable one.

First dance song ideas “All I Want is You” (U2) “Amazing” (Aerosmith) “Crash” (Dave Matthews Band) “Crazy for You” (Adele) “Faster” (Matt Nathanson) “For You I Will” (Monica) “Here Without You” (3 Doors Down) “Kiss Me” (Sixpence None the Richer) “I’ll Stand by You” (The Pretenders) “Love Song” (The Cure) “No One” (Alicia Keys) “Nothing Compares to You” (Sinead O’Connor) “Suga Suga” (Baby Bash) “Without You” (Rent Soundtrack)

Shooting a wedding is about far more than taking a picture

F

or Allia Schofer, shooting a wedding is about far more than simply taking a picture — it’s about capturing the spirit of the bride, groom and wedding party. “I like to feed off their personalities, and the bridal party,” said Schofer. “I don’t want them changing who they are. Using their personalities, I get great stuff from them.” The Creston-born and - raised photographer started Photography by Allia two years ago, following in the steps of her great-grandmother, Alice Sloan, who was a photographer in Creston in the 1960s and 1970s. For Schofer, her business is more than just a way to earn some extra income — it’s a way to express her creativity. “The more photo sessions I do, I find it’s not a career, it’s a passion,” she said. “I’m not out to conquer the

world, but I’m out to help anybody and everybody.” Some of Schofer’s wedding shoots are done at her West Creston home, which allows subjects to pose in fields and among trees. Schofer’s lifelong knowledge of the Creston Valley gives her the ability to pick out locations to suit any couple. “If people tell me what they want, I know right where I’m taking them,” she said. And she’s always happy to take on the challenge. “When I do get asked to do so somebody’s wedding, I’m honoured,” she said. “I’m honoured that they like my style and that they chose me.” For more information on Photography by Allia, which also offers family and boudoir shoots, visitwww.photosbyallia.com. Understanding wedding dress code There is a good chance that you’ve been invited to a wedding- or will be- where the expected attire was a mystery.

U

nless the invitation specifically mentions “black tie” or another dress code, you could be taking a guess as to what is appropriate to wear. Usually there are hints that will offer you ideas about the formality of the wedding. • Look at the invitation. Does it have all of the markers of a formal wedding: thick card stock, engraved typeset, calligraphy on the envelope? Or does it casually invite you to watch the couple tie the knot? Typically the invitation will set the tone of the wedding,

• Consider the location of the ceremony and reception. Chances are if the couple is being married on the beach and having a clam bake as their party they won’t expect women to wear an evening gown and gents to wear tails. But if you recognize the reception hall to be a formal or semi-formal venue, the dress code is likely similar. • Take your cues from the bride and her wedding party. If you’ve heard that the bride will be wearing a cathedrallength veil and elaborate wedding gown, chances are she’s

going for a formal wedding. If you know the bridesmaids are wearing sarongs and flip flops, it’s probably a casual affair. • Don’t be afraid to ask. Call the bride or groom, or their parents, and inquire as to what type of atmosphere it will be. Ladies usually can’t go wrong with a black cocktail dress and men can play it safe with a dark-coloured suit and tie. Follow these guidelines: Black Tie Her: A formal dress, usually to the floor. Co-ordinate with a beaded purse and elegant wrap. Him: A tuxedo is the only appropriate thing to wear. Evening Wedding Her: Dress as if you were

going to the theatre or a fancy restaurant. Avoid anything with sequins or too flashy. Him: A dark suit is always a safe bet. Daytime Wedding Her: A conservative but fun floral dress or light-coloured suit. Him: A light-coloured suit if it is summer. For winter, dress warmer in a blazer, slacks with a dress shirt or sweater underneath. Tuxedos should not be worn before 6 p.m. The following are not appropriate to wear to a wedding. • Black to a daytime wedding. • White, it competes with the bride. • Any form of jeans. • Anything torn, dirty or illfitting.

Plan ahead for a stress-free honeymoon trip After months of planning the wedding ceremony and reception and paying attention to numerous details, newlyweds deserve a relaxing, stress-free, romantic first-time trip as husband and wife.

W

hen deciding upon a honeymoon destination, pick a location that both of you will enjoy visiting. If you have a wide range of interests, choose a spot that offers a variety of activities to appeal to you both.

Meet with a travel agent to discuss possible locales that will suit your budget and tastes. Discuss a few alternative locations prior to seeing your travel agent so you’ll have a few options from which to choose. Your travel agent can give you some suggestions and offer ways to meet your budget and plan for the season in which you will be travelling. According to most travel agents, Hawaii, the Poconos, Niagara Falls, the Caribbean Islands and Florida are among the most popular spots for honeymooners. Cruises of any type are also favourites. Wherever you choose to go, remember to relax, enjoy each other’s company and have fun. PHOTO: Cassidy Shankowsky

Get married at the Kimberley Conference Centre With its Grand Opening in November 2010 the Kimberley Conference & Athlete Training Centre is now the largest venue of its kind in the Kootenays. Over the Summer of 2011 the Centre was booked solid with Weddings and the accolades came pouring in. Events Coordinator Meta Yee-Lim said “We had weddings of all sizes and descriptions, from small intimate celebrations to large formal extravaganzas. One thing the Bridal parties agreed on was that this was the perfect venue for their special day. You only have to walk through the door into the stunning vestibule to know that something magical is going to happen here today.” Another great highlight for the Brid-

al Parties was the food. The Chefs and Staff of the Centre take a great deal of pride in preparing an extraordinary dining experience. They understand that everything has to be perfect and that they are not just cooking dinner they are creating memories. Many of the wedding parties took advantage of the State of the Art audio visual system. The main Ballroom boasts two 20 foot projector screens, one at either end of the room. Wedding guests were treated to slide shows and video footage of the happy couple. The Centre also has full video-conferencing capabilities so the ceremony or reception can be transmitted to friends and family unable to attend. Located at the base of the ski hill, the Kimberley Conference & Athlete

Training Centre is nestled amongst the resort’s accommodation making it so convenient for wedding guests and family to stay close by. There are also countless ways to entertain yourselves pre and post wedding with everything the Kimberley area has to offer. This is what some previous Clients had to say: “What an awesome place to have a wedding ceremony. Thank you soooo much for providing such a rst class facility...” - Roi & Larry Ewing “One of the nicest buildings in all of the Kootenays! The food was awardwinning (in my opinion) the staff cheerful and very helpful! The Event Coordinator went out of her way to ensure all of our needs were met!” Gail Rousseau
