In the heart of Bacoor, Cavite, a tale of resilience and hope unfolds as we meet “Raj,” an 18-year-old whose life has been shaped by numerous adversities, particularly depression. On March 18, 2023, as we sit down for a candid interview, he opens up about his journey, unveiling the trials he faced while battling depression and the transformative coping mechanisms that have become his beacon of light.
“Depression is not a joke; it is gradually killing me, not just my body but also my soul,” Raj shares candidly, revealing the profound impact this mental health struggle had on his life. “The devastation I felt caused me to lose interest in everything around me, and I just wanted to stay locked in a room and cry. But then, I realized I needed to find a way to cope, to stand up again and see a single light in the midst of darkness.”
As if guided by an inner compass, Raj embarked on a journey of self-discovery and healing. His first step was simple yet profound—prayer. Turning to faith, he found solace in expressing his emotions to a higher power, connecting with God to release the burden he carried. Through prayer, he found moments of calm amidst the chaos of depression.
With unwavering determination, Raj explored additional coping strategies that gradually empowered him. Spending quality time with loved ones, engaging in regular exercise, meditating, and even playing the

soothing notes of a flute all became instrumental in his battle against depression. But perhaps one of the most profound transformations came from cultivating a positive outlook through the practice of gratitude
The impact of these small, deliberate steps has been immense. Raj’s life is now a testimony of resilience, as the sadness and low self-esteem that once engulfed him have gradually receded. His newfound determination and consistency have strengthened his resolve to overcome depression, transforming his perception of both himself and others.
“Overcoming depression was not an easy feat,” Raj reflects, “but allowing it to linger would have been far more difficult. Small progress may seem modest, but it creates profound changes in our lives.”
Today, Raj continues to embrace his coping mechanisms while exploring new passions, such as editing and poetry writing. Through his struggles and triumphs, he imparts invaluable life lessons to us all—action is always preferable to inaction, especially when faced with life’s challenges.
As we bid farewell to the pages of this heartfelt journey, let us take inspiration from “Raj’s” story. May it serve as a reminder that hope, resilience, and the courage to take those small but meaningful steps can light the way in even the darkest of times.

When vacation time arrives, many of us adopt the mindset of “trying new and many things,” creating ambitious lists of activities, hobbies, and bucket list items in search of satisfaction. Our natural curiosity and the well-known saying “You only live once” drive us to seize new experiences. Upon observing consecutive vacation posts, it becomes apparent that mind-blowing and adventurous trips can enhance the self-esteem of some individuals. However, what happens when financial and physical constraints hinder the realization of these grand plans? This predicament often leads to disappointment, underscoring the importance of prioritizing contentment and consistency over sheer quantity.
Critics argue that an excessive focus on happiness can diminish our joy. Contentment is sometimes deemed less desirable than happiness, perhaps due to fear or self-doubt, as it may lead people to passively accept their circumstances without actively pursuing personal growth (Hemus, 2020). However, I respectful -
ly disagree and suggest that one can experience delight and contentment simultaneously by wholeheartedlyembracing the present rather than constantly chasing after new experiences.
Imagine scrolling through a friend’s social media feed, feeling a sense of jealousy as you witness their vacation journey. Many individuals find themselves in a state of depression, comparing their own lives to the carefully curated online experiences of others. Yet, it is crucial to remember that contentment can be found even in poverty, where individuals derive fulfillment from the core aspects of life. On the contrary, wealthy individuals driven by the pursuit of material wealth often find themselves less happy and more dissatisfied (Kisonllg, 2016).
Benjamin Franklin’s quote, “Contentment makes poor men rich; discontentment makes rich men poor,” resonates deeply with this notion. Wealthy individuals who relentlessly chase after endless desires solely based on their financial capabilities ultimately encoun -
ter disappointment when they realize that their limited resources cannot sustain their insatiable wants. Similarly, individuals with lofty expectations may find themselves disappointed due to limited resources, financial constraints, or health issues.
Contentment acts as a catalyst for happiness, effectively eliminating the burden of painful and toxic cravings from our lives (Good Therapy, 2019). As we strive for relaxation and rejuvenation during our vacations, we must overcome the tendency to set unrealistic expectations for ourselves. Instead of overwhelming ourselves with an excessive number of tasks or activities, what truly matters is the progress we make and the fulfillment we derive from our efforts and commitments, all in harmony with a sense of contentment. By engaging in simple activities that cultivate inner peace and stability, we can genuinely unwind and relax during our vacations.

Imagine a nation known for its unity and resilience, where communities stand together, even in the face of life’s toughest battles. Here in the Philippines, we observe Suicide Prevention Week with deep significance. Held in the second week of September, this annual event unites individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness, offer support, and, most importantly, save lives.
The fundamental goal of Suicide Prevention Week is to shed light on a topic oftenshrouded in stigma and silence. Conversations about suicide are often avoided, driven by fear of judgment or a lack of understanding. This silence can be dangerous, as it hinders individuals seeking the help “I desperately need it!”.
Suicide in the Philippines is influenced by a complex web of social, cultural, and economic factors and as of May 9, 2023 a total of 4,400 cases have been recorded. Close-knit communities often place high societal expectations and familial responsibilities on individuals. Regrettably, mental health issues, while gaining recognition, are still frequently stigmatized and misunderstood. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new stressors and exacerbated existing mental health challenges. The stigma surrounding mental health issues often acts as a significant barrier to seeking help. Those grappling with suicidal thoughts or mental health challenges may fear being labeled as “weak” or “broken,” a fear that powerfully deters them from reaching out to friends, family, or professionals.

As we step beyond August 26, the designated day for commemorating Women’s Equality, it becomes essential to pause and grasp its profound significance. Every year, people from all corners of the world unite to celebrate progress and the ongoing journey towards gender equality. This date marks the 19th Amendment of 1920, which granted women the right to vote, yet its meaning extends far beyond historical pages. It serves as a reminder of our shared mission: breaking barriers, challenging norms, and shaping a world where everyone thrives, regardless of gender.
Women’s Equality Day encompasses more depth than its historical roots suggest. It emerges as a symbol of hope and a resounding call for a more inclusive society. This celebration pays tribute to countless women who championed gender equality, from the suffragists advocating voting rights to contemporary activists fighting for equal pay, reproductive rights, and an end to gender-based violence. It’s a day to honor the women who dismantled glass ceilings, igniting future generations to dream boldly and reach higher.
Across the globe, tales of resilience, determination, and progress unfold. Women are shattering barriers and reshaping possibilities in boardrooms, laboratories, classrooms, and community centers. They are not merely beneficiaries of progress; they are the engines propelling it. Women stand as innovators, creators, and catalysts for change, driving advancements across technology, science, arts, politics, and every conceivable sector.
Yet, the celebration isn’t limited to acknowledging achievements; it’s also an occasion to consider the path ahead. Gender disparities persist in diverse forms, encompassing the gender pay gap and underrepresentation in leadership. Women still
encounter obstacles in accessing education, health care, and decision-making. Moreover, women from marginalized communities often face compound ed discrimination, underscoring the imperative for intersectional strategies in the fight for equality.
For this celebration to hold meaning, en gaging in conversations that challenge stereotypes and biases is essential. Education plays a pivot al role in breaking down these barriers. Instill ing the significance of gender equality in young minds paves the way for a future devoid of prej udice. Economically, socially, and politically empowering women will drive positive trans formations across communities and societies.
As we commemorate this day, let’s renew our commitment to the ongoing journey to wards gender equality. Amplifying women’s voices, sharing their narratives, and support ing initiatives that empower them are vi tal. Simultaneously, questioning harmful norms and behaviors that perpetuate in equality is crucial. Gender equality isn’t a concern solely for women; it’s a uni versal challenge that collectively affects us.
Women’s Equality Day signifies prog ress, honors the tenacious efforts of those who paved the way, and propels us toward a better future. It’s an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements, acknowledge their persistent challenges, and collaborate to build a world where equality is more than a dream— it’s a reality. As we commemorate this day, let’s remember that gender equality transcends sim ply granting women a seat at the table; it necessi tates reshaping and expanding the very table itself.
