A

s the day of the SATs approached, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. I had spent countless hours preparing for the exam, attending review classes, studying practice materials, and solving endless math problems. I knew the SATs were an important step towards my future, and I wanted to give it my best.

On the morning of the SATs, I woke up early, feeling a surge of energy and anticipation.

I double-checked my bag, ensuring I had all the necessary items: identification, pencils, calculator, and admission ticket.

I also ate a nutritious breakfast to fuel up for the long day ahead.

Arriving at the test center, I joined a group of fellow students, all carrying the same mix of nerves and determination. We exchanged encouraging smiles and wished each other luck, knowing that we were were all in this together. The test center buzzed with a sense of focus and determination.

The proctor reminded everyone to remain silent and follow the instructions carefully.

from my experience. This is one of those milestones that I think everyone remembers, my mom and dad told me they remembered it like it was yesterday.

owned my first children’s education franchise when I was just 26 years old. Looking for work-life balance with a new baby was my driving force. I wanted to be home with my baby but also have a career. Owning my franchise for 9 years allowed me to do just that and do it quite well!

Later in life, after my third child, I would re-enter the world of franchising and again choose to do so in the children’s education industry.

Today I am fortunate to work with candidates who are looking at franchising as a potential fit for their own life goals. They often ask, “Linda, why were both of your franchises in the children’s education market?” When I think about that, the answer comes naturally. I enjoyed building businesses in my community that brought exceptional programming to children. The fact that I could work from home and the total investment was under $100K was a bonus! Parents will never stop spending money on their children’s education.

Statistics show that almost 60% of school-age children participate in after-school activities. That’s a lot of great children’s programming needed! Whether it be in tutoring; art education; science,

technology, engineering, and math (STEM); music; or fitness, the opportunities are plentiful.

A day in the life of a children’s education franchise owner is multi-faceted. For many of our top children’s education franchises, programming happens after school ends.

Owners use the hours while children are in the classroom to do their marketing and community outreach. This is the time when you hire and train your teachers and work on your business. The hours after school,

evenings, and possibly weekends are when your teachers will offer your programs. The general work ethic of teachers is another great reason to own a children’s education franchise. There are very few employees more passionate about their job or more loyal than teachers. The first teacher who worked for me continued with me for all 9 years I owned my first franchise.

In most cases, there are curricula that are changing and being added to keep content fresh and relevant. In the case of an afterschool art or STEM program, every year programs must be added so that a child once enrolled can continue for years and years. In a tutoring concept, technology must be developed and maintained so that tutors and lessons can be tracked and monitored.

This is not an industry where someone can do it themselves.

Dave and Lori Starnes first launched operations with Pillar To Post Home Inspectors in March 2021 after moving back home to Clarksville, Tennessee.

Their planned 2020 opening was delayed by the pandemic.

The couple’s journey actually began in Hawaii, where Dave had been a high school Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) instructor, while also running his own handyman/ general contracting business.

It began as a way to honor veterans this past Memorial Day. As an automotive marketing superstar (think, Harley-Davidson, Nissan, Chevrolet, Volkswagen), Brian Thomas said, “I was trained during my corporate days as a brand strategist and a marketer. The way my mind is wired...I look for points of convergence between what we do/sell/offer and credible, genuine, real passions shared by people. For me...I'm now a guy who happens to own a business that specializes in restoring many diverse kinds of property. I have specialized technology and expertise in-house to do it.”

“Over the years, Dad slowly began to give some of these things to my brothers and I for safe-keeping. His dog tags at first. Then other things. He really did not talk about his service much until we were in our teens. Then a few of the stories came out...and photos... and I was genuinely blown away,” said Brian.

Brian Thomas was more than touched when his office staff secretly obtained all of his father’s memorabilia and restored and shadow-boxed much of it as a gift. “It was more than touching. It helped me see how happy we could make others with items like these in their possession.”

Our concepts require no

Daniel, 34, had served in the United States Navy since 2012, serving at Corry Station in Pensacola. During that time, he and his wife, Emily, launched two real estate investment companies, one focused on renovating and selling dilapidated homes in Escambia and Santa Rosa

counties to address the affordable housing shortage in those areas and the other focused on multi-family real estate. “My experience in real estate gave me dozens of firsthand examples of the missing customer service experience in the flooring industry, which led Isaac and I to search for a way to solve that problem,” Daniel said.

In this article, we look at some of the ways a bad boss can be disastrous, and what a potential solution is for the talent stuck under them.

WHAT MAKES A BAD BOSS? There’s a difference between a boss you don’t like or sometimes butt heads with, and a truly bad boss. One might challenge you to think differently, be better, and grow in your position.

The other will stagnate you, deplete your self-confidence, and potentially make it more difficult for you to succeed going forward.

So, how do you know the difference between a boss you don’t like and a bad boss?

Here are some factors to consider when evaluating the person you work for: • Communication skills – a bad boss struggles to communicate effectively, leading to misunderstandings, confusion, and a lack of clear direction.

• Conflict resolution – bad bosses become disastrous when they ignore or mishandle workplace conflicts, creating a toxic environment and damaging team dynamics.

• Micromanaging – micromanaging can be the death knoll of employee creativity, innovation, and selfconfidence; it spells a lack of trust, and is usually the sign of a bad boss.

• Inconsistent treatment – bad bosses exhibit favoritism, apply inconsistent rules, or make decisions based on personal biases rather than objective criteria.

• Decision-making – a bad boss may make hasty or uninformed decisions without weighing the potential consequences.

• Transparency – a bad boss will often withhold information, make decisions without consulting pertinent team members, and fail to explain the reasoning behind important choices that impact employees.

• Empathy – a bad boss will show a genuine lack of empathy towards their employees’ and colleagues’ concerns, emotions, needs, and perspectives.

• Credit and recognition – a bad boss fails to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of their employees, and can even go as far as taking credit for their team’s work as their own.

• Abusive behavior – a bad boss may engage in bullying, harassment, or abusive behavior, which can have severe negative effects on employees' mental and emotional well-being.

All of these things result in a lack of trust, as well as a lack of development and growth opportunities for the employees of the bad boss, who absolutely aren’t getting

the support they need. In other words, it impacts your mental health, and it holds you back.

NOT ALL BAD BOSSES ARE CREATED EQUALLY. It may be easy to dismiss the behaviors of one bad boss by comparing them to another.

Different people will display these behaviors to different extents, and it might be easy to dismiss the impact of one bad boss, because you’ve seen worse before. But don’t sell yourself short; you deserve better.

SO, WHAT DO YOU DO? There is no easy way to deal with a bad boss. If there were, they wouldn’t be so potentially disastrous for your life and career. Essentially, you have two choices; try to resolve matters within your organization or leave.

If you choose to try and handle things internally, you’re going to want to keep precise records and document specific incidents, seek support from others within your organization, communicate your concerns to your superiors, and utilize resources like HR. Even if you do everything right, there’s still a chance things won’t change, and you could even face social and career repercussions.

Sometimes, the only true resolution you can find is through leaving.

WHERE DO YOU GO FROM THERE? If you’ve suffered from a bad boss or two, you might be wondering if there’s any way of working under someone that

will truly meet your needs. For some, the answer is, there isn’t.

The only satisfying solution for many hard, independent, and proactive workers is to be your own boss. That doesn’t mean you’re difficult to work with or not an excellent employee; it just means you’d thrive tenfold under your own supervision.

BUSINESS OWNERSHIP IS A PATH OUT OF BAD BOSS PURGATORY. If you want to be your own boss, starting your own business is an option, whether you buy an existing business or start your own venture from scratch.

A franchise is also a strong, proven solution. Franchised businesses come with a tested model for success and a lot of support from corporate Head Office, but still offer a high degree of independence, and importantly, no boss.

Business ownership, and the franchise option both offer you the security of putting your career, work experience, and finances in your own hands, rather than at the whims of someone else.

The decision is whether you can bear to continue working in a bad situation, or whether you have what it takes to strike out on your own to change your life.
