How Pet Franchises Are Reshaping America’s Love for Animals

SMALL ANIMALS LIKE HAMSTERS, RABBITS, GUINEA PIGS, ETC. ARE IN 6.7 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS.

I

n 2025, the bond between Americans and their pets has never been stronger—or more profitable. With 66% of U.S. households owning a pet, totaling approximately 86.9 million homes, the pet industry has burgeoned into a $152 billion market, projected to reach $157 billion by year-end. This extraordinary growth reflects a deeper cultural transformation: pets are no longer just companions—they are family.

A recent Forbes Advisor survey found that more than half of pet owners (51%) consider their pets to be as much a part of the family as a human member. In fact, nearly half of Gen Z pet owners

refer to their pets as their “children,” revealing the powerful emotional connection people now share with their animals.

This emotional bond spans all species. The most popular pets in the U.S. include: • Dogs – 65.1 million households • Cats – 46.5 million households • Freshwater fish – 11.1 million households • Small animals (hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.) – 6.7 million households • Birds – 6.1 million households Pet ownership is also closely tied to generational identity and income. Millennials

now represent the largest share of pet owners (33%), followed by Gen X (25%) and baby boomers (24%). Interestingly, Gen Z pet owners (ages 18–25) are significantly more likely to have a variety of pets, including small mammals and birds, whereas Gen X pet owners are least likely to branch beyond dogs and cats.

The pandemic years also played a major role: 78% of current pet owners acquired their animals during COVID-19, creating an unprecedented spike in demand for pet-related services.

As of 2022, more than 4.8 million pets were insured—a 124.9% increase since 2018. Notably, households earning $100,000 or more annually are the most likely to own pets—63% own dogs, and 40% own cats. This aligns with the upward trends in premium services, suggesting that pet spending will continue to rise in correlation with household income and discretionary spending.

My Life With Pets: Love, Loss, and Family

G

rowing up in a house full of animals has shaped how I see the world. Some of my earliest and happiest memories are with my dogs—especially my Shih Tzus, Hippy and Bobo, and our sweet, gentle dog CC, who we lost not long ago. CC was more than a dog. He was a constant presence in my life, always curled up by the couch, licking our hands, watching us eat like she was part of the conversation. Losing him wasn’t just the loss of a pet—it felt like losing a piece of our family. And in a way, we did.

When I think about how my family treats our dogs, it’s clear: these aren’t just animals.

They’re family members. Hippy and Bobo have their own personalities—Hippy is curious and sometimes chaotic, while Bobo is basically a fuzzy old man with a big heart and a giant appetite. My family plans vacations around them. We’ve bought airline tickets so they could fly with us instead of staying behind. We pack treats, soft blankets, and special food when we travel. Sometimes I think they get more attention than we do!

That kind of love for pets isn’t just something that happens in my home. I see it everywhere. When I go to the pet store, people are spending

serious money on gourmet food, plush toys, outfits, even birthday cakes for dogs. I’m not kidding—I once saw a mini dog birthday cake that cost more than a whole dinner for a person. But people buy it, because pets matter. They’re not just animals—they’re part of our lives, and businesses have figured that out.

As a teenager thinking about the future, I find it interesting how the love people have for their pets is shaping entire industries. There are pet spas,

dog hotels, mobile groomers, and even dog bakeries. I’ve heard of people having professional photoshoots for their dogs. And then there’s the more serious stuff, like veterinary clinics that offer advanced care, pet insurance plans, and even grief counseling when someone loses their pet.

I’ve also watched my dad help businesses that help people who love their pets. One of them is Resting Rainbow, a pet funeral and cremation service

that started after we lost CC. It offers families a way to say goodbye with the same love and dignity they’d give to any other family member. I’ve seen firsthand how much it means to people. Some families write letters to their pets, others hold small ceremonies. It’s emotional, but it’s also beautiful.

It shows that pet love doesn’t end when the animal is gone.

That connection is deep.

It makes me think about how real the humanization of pets is. It’s not a trend—it’s a reflection of something lasting.

More people are living alone, or choosing pets instead of kids, or simply realizing how much joy and comfort an animal brings. Pets don’t judge, they don’t betray you, and they’re always happy to see you.

That kind of love means a lot, especially in a world that feels stressful and disconnected sometimes.

What Veterans (and other potential business owners) REALLY Want to Know Prior to Purchasing a Business

T

ransitioning from military service (or civilian career) is a significant life change, and for many veterans I speak with, business ownership represents an exciting potential path forward. Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of advising more than 100 veterans exploring this possibility. Drawing on my own journey – 11 years in the Navy, 14 as a high-tech executive, and another 14 immersing myself in the franchise world as an owner, franchisor, and broker – my goal is to help each veteran reach a highconfidence decision about whether business ownership is right for them, whether that's a definitive 'yes,' a 'no,' or 'maybe later'. Through these conversations, certain core questions and concerns consistently emerge.

My initial consultations are fundamentally about getting to know the individual – their background, goals, ambitions, and, most importantly, their 'why' for considering business ownership. This isn't a sales pitch; it's a twoway conversation aimed at

One of the first things veterans seek clarity on is the true nature of the investment. There can be skepticism, sometimes fueled by online scams, about whether "purchasing a business" means buying the actual operating entity or just paying for an option to buy. I clarify that we're discussing buying the franchise itself. Veterans want a realistic understanding of the financial commitment. They ask about upfront costs, but also about financing options like SBA loans or leveraging their 401k. I often recommend an introductory call with a finance professional to outline these possibilities, preferring to refer an expert that has up to the minute access to the most current information!

While investment levels vary greatly, I emphasize that there are many viable options under

$150,000, even under $100,000, typically requiring a 20-30% down payment.

They express concerns about ongoing costs – royalty fees, inventory, and simply managing cash flow in the early stages.

Equally critical is understanding the process of selecting and researching potential businesses. Veterans are curious about the range of businesses I represent (around 350) and how they can explore options beyond my initial recommendations.

I encourage them to use resources like the International Franchise Association (IFA) website (ifa.org) for broader browsing, advising against direct contact initially. I explain that the real insights come not just from marketing materials or even the extensive Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), but from talking to existing franchise owners. This is where they can gauge the day-today realities and whether the franchisor delivers on their promises. This research phase is iterative and requires a time commitment, often several weeks or months.

A powerful driving force I frequently ask about is the veteran's 'why'. Common themes include being tired of bureaucracy, ineffective leadership, and workplace politics. Many want control, the opportunity to build "their own thing," and a desire for more freedom and flexibility, even if it means being tightly bound to the business initially.

For some, it's about building a morally just organization, focusing on their team, and creating a superior work environment, carrying forward the values learned in service.

My own 'why' evolved from wanting to work for myself and my family after an unexpected job loss to finding fulfillment in mentoring and helping others in transition.

Veterans also wrestle with realism regarding income expectations, particularly in the first few years. I assess if their income targets are feasible for a startup. Expecting a large income from day one is often unrealistic without significant initial capital. Some are open to

lower initial income, aiming to cover essentials and build over time, perhaps by combining the business with other parttime work.

Finding a business that aligns with their skills, experience, and values is paramount.

Veterans consider how their military leadership, technical background, or comfort level with working with people or in sales might fit different models. While some are hesitant about B2B sales, they recognize the parallels with leadership and influence they exercised in uniform. I look for opportunities that leverage their strengths, like structure and team building. Value alignment is also key; some brands emphasize culture and integrity, which resonates strongly.

Finally, veterans want to understand the risks involved and how the franchise model helps mitigate them. While no business ownership is risk-free, the franchise path provides a proven plan and support system. Talking to

existing franchisees is the most effective way to understand the realities and challenges firsthand. For those with riskaverse family members, the thorough research process is crucial for building confidence and achieving alignment.

In essence, the veterans I work with seek clarity, transparency, and realistic expectations about purchasing a business. They value objective information, prioritize insights from those who are already doing it, and are driven by a desire for autonomy, purpose, and a better professional environment. My role is to serve as a knowledgeable guide and resource, helping them explore these critical areas to make a confident and informed decision about their future.

still remember the day I met Moose. He was a scrappy, uncertain mini doodle mix, barely 1 year old, with eyes that held stories of hardship.

Rescued from a shelter, Moose had been bounced around, never quite finding a place to call home.

he story of The Taco Spot is one that reflects the very heart of the American Dream: two brothers, humble beginnings, relentless hard work, and a willingness to take risks in the face of overwhelming challenges. Jorge and Jesus Ruiz, the co-founders of The Taco Spot, embody what is possible in America, a land where opportunity meets perseverance and where diverse cultures come together to celebrate food, family, and ambition.

In 2020, the world was shutting down. Small businesses everywhere were closing their doors, but in a repurposed storage unit in Arizona, Jorge and Jesus were cooking up something extraordinary. What started as a small taco stand, launched just one month before COVID-19 hit, would grow into

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS AND UNCERTAIN TIMES Before the idea of The Taco Spot was born, Jorge and Jesus were working hard in their respective trades.

Jorge was a truck driver, spending long days on the road to provide for his family, while Jesus was running his barbershop next to what would become their first taco stand. Both brothers shared a love for authentic Mexican food and a strong work ethic instilled in them by their family.

In February 2020, they pooled their resources to open a small taco stand in a storage unit. The timing could not have been worse. As COVID-19 gripped the nation, restaurants and businesses everywhere were forced to close or drastically cut back operations. Foot traffic dried up, and customers stayed home.

With no experience in marketing and little understanding of how to grow a business, Jorge and Jesus faced the very real possibility of losing everything. But in

America, creativity and grit often carve a path where others see a dead end.

THE TURNING POINT: RISK AND REWARD The turning point came when a local social media influencer discovered their tacos and fell in love. Eager to help, the influencer offered to promote The Taco Spot online in exchange for food. Around the same time, a Google SEO specialist approached them with a similar offer: ads for tacos. Desperate for visibility, Jorge and Jesus agreed to these unconventional arrangements.

The results were almost immediate. Word of The Taco Spot spread across social media, and people started showing up. But it wasn’t enough to save their struggling business—at least not yet. The brothers realized they needed to invest in marketing in a bigger way.

With no extra funds to spare, they made a bold decision: stop making payments on Jorge’s pickup truck and use the money to pay for ads instead. It was a gamble that many would have been too afraid to take. Three months later, the truck was repossessed, but by then, the lines were already forming

around the building.

The ads worked. Social media buzzed with praise for The Taco Spot, and customers couldn’t get enough of their handmade tortillas, perfectly seasoned meats, and flavorful birria tacos. Jorge and Jesus knew they were onto something special.

FROM SURVIVAL TO EXPANSION What began as survival turned into opportunity. With demand skyrocketing, the brothers opened their next location in Tempe, followed shortly after by another in Mesa. Each new store drew more fans, and soon, customers weren’t just craving tacos—they were asking how they could own their own Taco Spot.

Everyone wants new owners to succeed, and the first year in business is the most critical hurdle to make that happen.

A franchisor once told me that he tells new owners they must do four things right, right out of the box: First they need to “hire the right people”, then they need to

“sell-sell-sell” to get up and running successfully in that challenging first year. Makes sense!

However, what if that new owner asks what they should handle bookkeeping and payroll? These are “nonrevenue generating” tasks that most owners aren’t well versed in and shouldn’t waste their limited time, talent, and

resources in addressing.

Many franchisors will simply reply, “find someone to handle it for you”, what we call the “Uncle Bob” method.

A recent trend in franchise bookkeeping is for franchisors to mandate new owners to use a specified bookkeeping

firm and a payroll provider for the first 12 months.

Over the years, I’ve studied and applied the wisdom found in timeless classics like As a Man Thinketh by James Allen, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, and The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz. Across the board, the message is clear: your thoughts shape your reality.

If you’re not achieving the results you require at the speed you desire, don’t just work harder. Think differently.

New thinking leads to new actions. New actions create new results.

Q: How can intentional thinking be applied practically?

Intentional thinking isn’t about sitting around in deep thought all day. It’s about designing your life and business so that your thinking drives your doing. It means

starting every day with clarity about your purpose and intentionally connecting your actions to that purpose.

Most people treat their calendars as simply a list of appointments and obligations. I encourage people to think of their calendar as a "purpose map"—a tool to ensure that every meeting, task, and commitment is aligned with what matters most.

It also means examining your environment and your habits. Are they supporting your goals or sabotaging them? Are you letting old habits guide your day, or are you engineering your environment to reinforce your best thinking? Intentional living demands an audit of both your mindset and your surroundings.

Q: How does this tie into productivity and results?

Productivity is not about doing more. It’s about doing what matters most—and doing it faster, smarter, and with more precision. When you think intentionally, you prioritize what drives the biggest impact instead of getting caught up in the noise.

You stop reacting to whatever demands your attention in the moment and start designing your days around the activities that move you closer to your goals.

Q: You referenced books like Think and Grow Rich.

What are some timeless lessons from those works that still apply today?

One lesson is that success starts with self-perception.

How you see yourself directly impacts what you attempt and what you achieve.

Another lesson, this one from Earl Nightingale, is the power of visualization—clearly imagining your goals sets a mental blueprint that your actions can follow.

These authors also teach that obstacles should not be feared but embraced as opportunities. When you encounter a challenge, intentional thinking allows you to approach it with the attitude, "How can we make this work?" instead of immediately listing reasons why it won’t.

Of course, the importance of legacy thinking cannot be ignored. The thoughts you nurture today don’t just impact your current success—they shape the future you are building for yourself and for those you influence.

Thinking is not a casual exercise—it’s the lever that moves your entire life. When you think intentionally, you don’t just hope for success; you engineer it.

If you’re serious about reaching your Next Level, take a hard look at the quality of your thinking. Are your daily thoughts aligned with your goals? Are you strategically designing your life and business(es), or simply reacting to them?

Intentional thinking is the bridge between where you are and where you want to be.
