Building a Legacy

C

an you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

The Law Firm was established in 1951 by my grandfather Hassan Pacha Bassiouny after retiring from the judiciary. My father was a public prosecutor, an Ambassador and then revived his father’s law firm after in turn retiring from the foreign service. Hence, I was always inspired to join the faculty of law and become the first third generation lawyer and continuing the family legacy along my brother and business partner Mahmoud Bassiouny.

What was the pivotal moment or idea that led to the creation of your business?

The sudden death of my father Amb. Salah Bassiouny when I was barely 24 years old. I started out with the intention of stabilizing the firm, but gradually, with every new client and every transaction closed, I started feeling like this was my own project that I was raising from the ground up.

How did you go about funding your startup, and what challenges did you face during the initial stages?

It’s been noting short of a rollercoaster, in 2004 John Matouk and myself built Matouk Bassiouny on the pillars of the old Bassiouny Law Firm. We started with 2 lawyers, an accountant and an office

boy and slowly but steadily kept growing to where we are today with over 250 lawyers, over 30 Partners and over 100 supporting staff with four offices in Egypt, the UAE, Sudan and Algeria.

Can you share some of the key milestones or achievements your business has reached since its inception?

Some of the key milestones include: Signing an Association Agreement with DLA Piper, and launching DLA Matouk Bassiouny; The 25 Jan revolution and the political upheaval that followed and the dire implications on our business at the time; 2012, when the

elected to be independent and break the association with DLA Piper and which was a key strategic move as we realized that becoming branded One international law f irm meant that all the other international law f irm would not be receptive to work with us and hence adopted a new business strategy to become the preferred Egyptian law f irm for all international law f irms that did not have an off ice in Egypt.

What strategies did you use to build a strong team, and how important is having the right team to your success?

"I AM A VERY COMPETITIVE PERSON AND COMPETITION IS A BIG DRIVING FORCE BEHIND MY SUCCESS." Omar Bassiouny Having the right team is essential. I always say that the main fundamental asset of any law firm are the people which form the cornerstone of any successful law firm.

Have you encountered any significant setbacks or failures along the way, and what did you learn from them?

I faced numerous difficult setbacks during my journey.

I learnt to always get up, dust myself off, and keep going.

How do you stay innovative and adapt to changes in your industry or market?

No successful business can sustain and persist without the constant imperative need to always adapt to changes to the market and to the industry.

What role has mentorship played in your entrepreneurial journey, and can you name any mentors who have influenced you?

I was privileged to have many mentors including Pervez Akhtar, Regional Managing Partner of Freshfields.

How do you handle competition, and what sets your business apart from others in your industry?

I think what sets our firm apart from others is that our clients know that we care about them and their business. We are in

fact their legal partners.

Can you discuss the importance of a clear business plan and vision for the long term success of your company?

I always say that business plans are important but no success can be achieved without a clear vision.

How do you manage work-life balance?

I learnt to delegate and shift priorities in a way that allowed me to continue working hard while still making the time for my family and friends.

What are the major trends or shifts in your industry that you're currently monitoring?

-Artificial intelligence; -Mobility; -International law firm’ expanding with direct presence in the ME. Can you describe your experience with scaling your business and expanding into new markets or regions?

Being the first truly regional Cairo-based law firm. Our first office outside of Egypt was in Sudan, followed by the UAE and Algeria. We are now pursing the launching of an office in Saudi Arabia which we hope to finalize in 2024.

How has technology played a role in your business, and what tech tools or platforms do you find most valuable?

Technology is a key metric and plays a huge role in any industry. In the business of law, we are now heavily investing in AI to optimize our deliverable and rationalize cost.

Are there any ethical or social responsibility initiatives your company is involved in?

Yes, we have an extensive diversity and inclusion program which we are very proud of and which is designed to promote diversity and inclusion at the work place with the clear objective of eliminating any form of discrimination.

Can you share any insights into your future goals and what you hope to achieve in the next few years?

Ensuring the delivery of topknock quality legal services in Egypt and all the other jurisdictions we are in or will be remains the most important goal.

How do you deal with the stress and pressure that often come with entrepreneurship?

I have learnt to navigate through them with a few essential tools like exercise, good eating habits and most recently the amazing discovery of ice baths! I’m still working on getting enough sleep, it’s a work in progress.

an you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

My roots lie in the field of Education, it was the fusion of this passion with an unyielding drive for innovation that steered me toward entrepreneurship.I realized that the principles of innovation and forward-thinking teaching methodologies could transcend traditional boundaries and create substantial change.

What was the defining moment or idea that led to the creation of your business?

The turning point came when I identified a notable void in the market, particularly within the education sector. It became evident that there was a pressing need for a more streamlined and efficient approach to integrate technological advancements into education.

How did you approach financing your startup and what challenges did you face during the early stages?

At the beginning, I funded the business myself, drawing from the savings I'd accumulated over years of hard work. Securing traditional financing was a challenge due to the lack of a proven track record, which pushed me to think creatively about managing expenses and seeking alternative funding routes.

Can you share some of the key

accomplishments and goals your business has achieved since its inception?

We've been acknowledged with industry awards for our innovative solutionsanddedicationtocustomer satisfaction. We've partnered with influential entities such as the Ministry of Education (UAE), Abu Dhabi Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET), Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and other governmental and private educational institutions throughout the UAE. What strategies have you used to build a strong team, and how important is having the right team to your success?

I seek individuals whose personal values align with the ethos of the company. It's not just about skills; it's about shared beliefs, attitudes, and a common vision.

Having a team that resonates with the company's values forms a strong foundation; it creates a sense of unity and purpose that permeates everything we do.

Setbacks are part of the entrepreneurial journey. During the pandemic, we faced reduced projects and limitations due to government regulations.

While I haven't had a singular mentor, I draw inspiration from renowned entrepreneurs globally. Their experiences and achievements have shaped my journey and provided valuable lessons.

Our future goals include expanding into global markets, persistent innovation, and strengthening our position as an industry frontrunner. We aspire to reach new horizons, constantly evolve, and maintain a prominent presence in our field.

How do you deal with marketing and attracting customers in the age of digital media?

We rely on a strong online presence, engaging content, targeted advertising, and social media platforms to reach and engage our target audience.

Technology is the core foundation of our operations. We offer cutting-edge tools and gadgets to various institutions, focusing on creating comprehensive eLearning platforms and innovative technological solutions.

How do you deal with the stress and pressures that often accompany entrepreneurship?

I manage stress through sports, particularly Padel, and maintain a strong support system of friends and family.

When you look back, is there anything you would have done differently on your entrepreneurial journey?

In hindsight, I would have focused on building a diverse team from the beginning and invested more in marketing and branding strategies early on.

ow did your background shape your decision to venture into entrepreneurship, and what inspired that choice?

It was started by my father who started building the empire, which is the Group of one of the biggest transportation companies in Egypt “Go Bus Group”, the market leader, It started with “HIPTON Travel”, then Go Bus, and its subsidiaries (Go Mini, Go limo and Go Express) What was the pivotal moment or idea that led to the creation of your business?

My father was a self-made entrepreneur who started his own business at a very young age, so he was a true inspiration for me. I fell in love with the business and started to work with him and learned how to solve business problems.

A dream took the shape of a mission, a mission to connect, to facilitate, to inspire. That dream was “Go Bus”, which started with a single bus and an unwavering determination to change the way Egyptians traveled. Fast forward to today, GoBus has grown into a lifeline, covering all over Egypt.

Can you share some of the key milestones or achievements your business has reached since its inception?

Our Group, the Go Bus along with its subsidiaries, is a shareholding company working in the field of public transport under the

supervision of the Ministry of Transport since 1998.

It was a dream with a single bus and an unwavering determination to change the way Egypt traveled. Fast forward to today, we have grown into a lifeline, covering all over Egypt.

GoMini is our convenient small bus service, offering fast, affordable, and comfortable rides from and to multiple destinations for youth groups.

We won't stop at group transport, encompassing private travel through luxurious cars newly introduced under the GoLimo brand.. GoLimo is a Limousine service (intercity and City-toCity) with the highest standards in transporting its clients to

take the pressure and stress out of your travel arrangements and that is done by providing the best and latest models of vehicles with several categories led by professional chauffeurs. What strategies did you use to build a strong team, and how important is having the right team to your success?

Can you discuss the importance of a clear business plan and vision for the long-term success of your company?

Our vision for the future is all about continuity, using our mission statement as a compass to guide every decision and action.

We, at the Go Group, operate transport lines that cover all over Egypt, with about 60 offices and stations, ranging from large transport buses to the 14-seater buses for the GoMini service, and private limousines newly introduced under GoLimo. And using this expansive network we run the fastest shipping service with GoExpress. Also, we have deals and international protocols

with Sudan, Libya, Jordan, and upcoming deals with Saudi Arabia.

How do you approach marketing and customer acquisition in today's digital age?

In the last 10 years, we built a strong marketing strategy, with all its aspects, and created a strong road map.

We have built a strong and aggressive digital presence and inf rastructure to ensure that we can continue to provide top-notch service to our customers, even in the face of unforeseen challenges. Our track record speaks for itself, and we remain dedicated to upholding our legacy of excellence for years to come.

Our customers are the focal point of our endeavors, and we constantly strive to surpass their expectations at every turn.

Can you describe your experience with scaling your business and expanding into new markets or regions?

Our past experiences have taught us valuable lessons, and we have channeled this knowledge into investing in our people, technology, and digital inf rastructure to maintain our position as leaders in the transportation industry.

How has technology played a role in your business, and what tech tools or platforms do you find most valuable?

The Power of Digital has a huge impact on how businesses perform nowadays "We digitized our service" years ago, Through a growing digital presence for the past 12 years, GoBus is providing more accessibility using highly technological online booking and customer care services through the website and the mobile apps, social media, and all communication channels and changing consumers behavior.

We used the highest technology techniques and digital infrastructure to maintain our position as the market leader in Egypt.

How do you deal with the stress and pressure that often come with entrepreneurship?

I usually travel.

Traveling can be an amazing way to disconnect and can help to feel re-energized.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are looking to start their own businesses?

If I could give one piece of advice to them, it would be “Never Give Up, keep working hard”

W

hat's your background, and what drove you to take the path of entrepreneurship?

My journey from a Director of Finance to an entrepreneur was fueled by a passion for making impactful business decisions and a long-held aspiration to establish my own venture. Instead of making decisions in a company, I wanted to take a bet on myself and make my own business decisions. The real catalyst and inspiration, however, was the entrepreneurial spirit of my wife, a cofounder in her own right, who emboldened me to take this step.

What was the defining moment or idea that led to the creation of your business?

The inception of WYR was less about a singular moment and more about a leap of faith. I embraced the entrepreneurial spirit by investing and going all in on my vision, determined to see it flourish.

How did you approach financing your startup and what challenges did you face during the early stages?

Initially, it was all self-funded, fueled by significant personal savings, and eventually bolstered by lines of credit. Our bootstrap approach was a testament to the commitment and belief in the business.

Can you share some of the key accomplishments and goals your business has achieved since its inception?

After our inception year, we've been able to achieve the remarkable feat of doubling our growth profitably year after year. That’s something I take a lot of pride in. Growth is easy, but profitable growth is a sign of sound decision making as well as a testament to having a good product.

What strategies have you used to build a strong team, and how important is having the right team to your success?

Our approach to team-building has been grounded in the philosophy of “fail fast & move forward”. Recognizing that not every hire will be perfect, the focus has been on finding the right fit, essential for the success of any business.

Did you encounter any major setbacks or failures along the way, and what did you learn from them?

Absolutely! We had a lot of issues with sales in our startup year (year 0). The key is to keep trying new things and follow the numbers. Numbers will always guide you to the right answer.

How do you stay innovative and adapt to changes in your industry or market?

We listen to customer reviews and feedback for signs of change. We always work on testing and trying new products and colors to stay on top of trends.

Our strategy isn’t necessarily to try to compete with others. Instead, we focus on our unique strengths and selling propositions. We strive to lead in the men’s essentials market by making sure we provide the highest quality fabric & perfecting the fit. So we like to keep it as simple as that. Also, observing industry trends helps us stay aligned with market dynamics.

Can you discuss the importance of having a business plan and a clear vision for the long-term success of your company?

Having a well-structured business plan and a clear three-year vision is paramount. These guideposts steer our decision-making process and help chart our path towards long-term success.

How do you manage work-life balance, and what advice can you give to other entrepreneurs facing this challenge?

My philosophy is that when work aligns with your goals and passions, it doesn't feel burdensome.

This mindset fuels my relentless drive, yet I recognize the importance of downtime.

How do you deal with marketing and attracting customers in the age of digital media?

Digital media ads are key and content creation is a key factor

of success and to introduce our customers to our clothing. Our approach leverages the insights gained from tracking digital ad performance across platforms.

This data-driven strategy ensures our marketing efforts are both effective and efficient.

Can you describe your experience expanding your business and expanding into new markets or regions?

Expanding WYR into new markets like Europe and the Middle East involves navigating complex logistics and supply chain challenges, which we are actively solving.

How has technology played a role in your work, and what technology tools or platforms do you find most valuable?

It’s definitely played a huge role!

Everything revolves about our digital marketing attributions technology that helps us monitor our ad spend and most effectively spend our marketing budget.

Are there any ethical or social responsibility initiatives that your company participates in?

WYR is committed to making a positive social impact internally (our employees and supply chain) and externally. We're exploring initiatives like eco-friendly product lines and community outreach programs to contribute to a better world.

Can you share any insights into your future goals and what you hope to achieve over the next few years?

Our trajectory is set towards sustained profitable growth, with exciting possibilities like introducing a women’s line on the horizon.

How do you deal with the stress and pressures that often accompany entrepreneurship?

The pressures of entrepreneurship for me, are comparable to, if not less than, any other pressures I’ve faced in my career. A clear vision and a driven mindset help in managing these challenges effectively.

What advice would you give to would-be entrepreneurs who want to start their own business?

The key is to just do it and not overthink. Be adaptable, eager to learn, and persistent. Fail fast, learn, & move on!

When you look back, is there anything you would have done differently on your entrepreneurial journey?

While there have been minor missteps along the way, I wouldn't fundamentally change my entrepreneurial journey.

Each experience has been instrumental in shaping the success of our business.

‫التغلب على التحدي‬ ‫كريم عابد ‪ ،‬المدير التنفيذي والمؤسس ‪WYR ،‬‬ ‫هــل يمكنــك أن تخبرنــا عــن‬ ‫خلفيتــك ومــا الــذي ألهمــك لتصبــح‬ ‫رائــد أعمــال؟‬ ‫هــل يمكنــك أن تخبرنــا عــن خلفيتــك‬ ‫ومــا الــذي ألهمــك لتصبــح رائــد أعمــال؟‬ ‫كانــت رحلتــي مــن مديــر مالــي إلــى‬ ‫رائــد أعمــال مدفوعــة بشــغف التخــاذ‬ ‫قــرارات تجاريــة مؤثــرة وطمــوح طويــل‬ ‫األمــد لتأســيس مشــروعي الخــاص‪ .‬بـ ً‬ ‫ـدًال‬ ‫مــن اتخــاذ القــرارات فــي الشــركة‪ ،‬أردت‬ ‫الرهــان علــى نفســي واتخــاذ قــرارات‬ ‫العمــل الخاصــة بــي‪ .‬ومــع ذلــك‪ ،‬كان‬ ‫الحافــز واإللهــام الحقيقــي هــو روح‬ ‫المبــادرة التــي تتمتــع بهــا زوجتــي‪ ،‬وهــي‬ ‫مؤسســة مشــاركة فــي حــد ذاتهــا‪،‬‬ ‫والتــي شــجعتني علــى اتخــاذ هــذه‬ ‫الخــطوة‬ ‫مــا هــي اللحظــة أو الفكــرة‬ ‫المحوريــة التــي أدت إلــى إنشــاء‬ ‫عملــك ؟‬ ‫لــم تكــن بدايــة ‪ WYR‬تتعلــق بلحظــة‬ ‫فرديــة بقــدر مــا كانــت تتعلــق بقفــزة‬ ‫اإليمــان‪ .‬لقــد احتضنــت روح المبــادرة مــن‬ ‫قدًمــا فــي‬ ‫خالل االســتثمار والمضــي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫رؤيــتي‪ ،‬عازًمـ ـًا عــلى رؤيتــها تزدــهر‬ ‫كيــف تعاملــت مــع تمويل شــركتك‬ ‫الناشــئة ومــا هــي التحديــات التــي‬ ‫واجهتهــا خالل المراحــل األولــى؟‬ ‫فــي البدايــة‪ ،‬كان كل ذلــك ممـ ً‬ ‫ـوًال ذاتًيًا‪،‬‬ ‫مدعوًمــا بمدخــرات شــخصية كبيــرة‪ ،‬ثــم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تــم تعزيــزه فــي النهايــة بخطــوط ائتمان‪.‬‬ ‫لقــد كان نهجنــا التمهيــدي بمثابــة‬ ‫ــشهادة عــلى االلــتزام واإليــمان بالعــمل‬ ‫هــل يمكنــك مشــاركة بعــض‬ ‫اإلنجــازات واألهــداف الرئيســية التــي‬ ‫حققهــا عملــك منــذ بدايتــه؟‬ ‫بعــد عامنــا التأسيســي‪ ،‬تمكنــا مــن‬ ‫تحقيــق إنجــاز رائــع يتمثــل فــي مضاعفــة‬ ‫عاًمــا بعــد عــام‪.‬‬ ‫نمونــا بشــكل مربــح‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وهــذا شــيء أفتخــر بــه كثي ـًرًا‪ .‬النمــو أمــر‬ ‫ســهل‪ ،‬لكــن النمــو المربــح هــو عالمــة‬ ‫علــى اتخــاذ القــرار الســليم باإلضافــة إلــى‬ ‫‪24‬‬
