You could hardly devise a plot more complicated than the one facing the church of Jesus Christ across the globe. A pandemic of mammoth proportions has touched every nation.

Churches and pastors have had to devise new, creative, and unfamiliar methods to continue the mission of God while protecting the people of the congregation and community from the ravages of COVID-19.

In the process, many churches are facing financial pressures that are unprecedented. In some locations, many in the congregation have been out of work or severely limited in their earnings. Local churches are struggling to meet the needs of their people for food, shelter, rent, and other vital concerns, while struggling to meet the financial responsibilities for pastoral support, utilities, and ministry funds.

I have been deeply moved by the creative efforts of many of our congregations and pastors. Some local churches have become food distribution centers where the needs of their community are being addressed by the sacrificial efforts of the people of the churches. Connections with community food banks, medical clinics, and other resources have been established. Some churches have been more involved in helping address needs in their communities than they have been in decades, if ever.

And then came the crisis of widespread social unrest over the tragic deaths of young Black men. Suddenly, layered on top

of the ongoing needs imposed by COVID-19, communities were filled with rage and frustration. In the midst of a divisive political climate we seem unable to manage with civility, we also find ourselves facing the tension of demonstrations, riots, and further division and anger.

The church of Jesus Christ is under stress. The culture is afire with tension, uncertainty, and division. Even within our churches there is tension over the appropriate response to the crises we face. Many of our pastors find themselves in a situation where they do not know how to address the political and social divides that are tearing away at the fabric of the nation and the globe, and affecting relationships within the congregation.

Perhaps it is time for the church to take a deep breath, step back from the tension, and refocus on who we are as the body of Christ. This is not a time to ignore or downplay the depth of the issues facing the world. In fact, it is likely that we are facing some of these issues now because we were not willing to face them in the past. But we must be sure that we are facing the issues as people of faith, as followers of Jesus, as Wesleyan-Holiness folk who believe, at the core of our being, that we reflect the holy love of God in action, attitude, relationship, and purpose.

One of the spiritual resources we often neglect when we talk about reconciliation in the church is the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. In the New Testament, unity is integral to the meaning of the Lord’s Supper. The final meal Jesus shares with his disciples in John’s Gospel is a true communion in which the beloved disciple reclines next to the Lord (John 13:23). The communion displayed in this meal indicates the profound unity that Jesus intends believers to have with him and one another.

This unity is the subject of Jesus’s final prayer after the meal and before his death. Jesus prays that the unity of the church would reflect his own oneness with the Father—“that they may be one, as we are one” (John 17:22).

In the spirit of that prayer, Paul rebukes the church in Corinth for gathering at the table in division. The Corinthian church’s disunity contradicts the very meaning of the meal and the very character of the body of Christ. For Paul, the church’s oneness is signified and enacted in the sharing of the one bread. “Because there is one bread,” Paul reminds Christians, “we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf” (1 Cor. 10:17).

The one bread of the sacrament, brought together from many grains, is a visible reminder of how believers are reconciled to one another in Christ. “So in Christ, who is the heavenly bread, we may know that there is one body, with which our number is joined and united” (Epistle 62.13). By the fourth century, the connection between the Lord’s Supper and unity has become so significant that Augustine of Hippo refers to the meal as the “sign of unity” and the “bond of love” (Tractate on John’s Gospel 26.13). Augustine describes the meal in such terms because he believes the Holy Spirit is present in it, filling the hearts of believers with love for God and each other and thereby creating unity in the church.

This scriptural link between unity and the Lord’s Supper was evoked frequently in the early tradition. The first-century Didache states that the bread of the Eucharist was originally scattered over the hills, but now it has been gathered into one loaf. Thus, the church prays: “Let your church be gathered

An increasing number of our neighbors have urgent physical, emotional, and psychological needs. What a time to be the very hands and feet of Jesus to those in our community who need the love of Christ, possibly more than ever before! As our Savior did, we have the calling and the opportunity to care for the whole of human beings, not just their souls.

The words Jesus said when he called his first disciples were, “Follow Me” (Matt. 4:19). Even now he utters these words to all who have ears to hear—but what does it mean to follow him? In what ways did he draw people toward becoming more like him? And how are we to imitate him in our own process of discipleship?

First, Jesus always met people where they were in life. He loved all people and knew what they needed at every moment.

He welcomed children, finding value in their purity and ability to believe. He ate with sinners and did not pour out contempt because of their station in life. He saw women for who they

were, not for how society labeled them. Jesus was patient in meeting people where they were and then intentionally helping them grow their faith. Second, Jesus taught people for the purpose of transforming them. He understood the hazards of people filling their minds with knowledge without transforming their hearts. His mission was to restore all of humanity to God’s original design. Third, Jesus preached the message of a hope that we are to embody as the people of God for the sake of all others.
