HEAD OF SCHOOL LETTER

“Mr. Man, let me help you with that map.” The voice comes from my student Georgy, who is in the backseat of our passenger van. We are driving across South Africa examining conservation efforts for a series of African endangered animals and I think we may have made a wrong turn. Georgy points out that we can connect with a road ahead and be back on track to our next park. Within a couple of hours, we are back in the bush watching a pride of lions. Our guide talks about how the limited number of lions in Southern Africa has led to problems with inbreeding and a weakened animal stock.

Relentless Innovators Introducing Forman’s New Entrepreneurship Class They’ve overcome obstacles from which many people would never recover.

They’ve known hard work against great odds, and some have been outsiders much of their lives. They don’t fear failure.

Last year these 12 students simulated the launch of new businesses they hope to start one day. They all share a dream fueled by innovation and creativity. They’re risktakers and problem-solvers who see the big picture and make novel connections.

When these entrepreneurial students lobbied the Head of School for a course on entrepreneurship, it filled quickly.

Launching their businesses was part of the hands-on aspect of this new course, which began last fall. “I pushed hard to get this class started because I wanted something that would challenge me as well as prepare me to be a successful business owner,” says Griffin Powers ’15.

Forman students are in good company. Over 35 percent of successful American entrepreneurs are dyslexic.1 Add in the number with ADHD, and that figure may double.

Designed for Different Learners The structure of the course is ideal for the way the entrepreneurial mind learns. “Unlike other schools, Forman’s yearlong course is not part of our Economics course, but dedicated exclusively to entrepreneurship,” says Head of School Adam K. Man, who admits the students were relentless.

The course is also comprehensive: students cover every aspect of business. “They’re putting all of these pieces together,” says Joe Odell, course instructor. “The financial, marketing, and strategic planning…I want them to understand all the concepts. One day when they review a balance sheet, they may need to question: ‘Why do we have so many account receivables?’”

Alone and Collaborative Students also work with Harvard Business School case studies. “We work alone, but when we collaborate as a group we understand the case studies better,” says Tucker Fry ’16.

“It was interesting to study what the company did wrong,” adds Jake Cloobeck ’16.

With the DNA that gives them an entrepreneurial advantage, it’s not surprising that so many Forman students come from entrepreneurial families. Griffin Powers’ grandfather began selling door-to-door, and then Griffin’s father joined the company. Today, they run a successful business.

But Powers also drew on his own experience: as a junior, he launched an online business with a 2,000 percent profit margin as a middleman. His training in Forman’s entrepreneurship class has prepared him for his next stop: Endicott College, where he’ll major in entrepreneurship.

Jake Cloobeck’s family has influenced him as well.

His father is a successful entrepreneur, his mother is artistic, and his brother works in the film industry.

Cloobeck plans to combine his passion for film and business, but he wants to add a new dimension.

“I’m interested in innovation that will help people,” he says. “My parents taught me to help others.”

Ultimate Teacher and Guest Entrepreneurs

Strengths and Weaknesses

These entrepreneurs have a teacher with an ideal background. Joe Odell grew up working in a local family business. He earned an undergraduate degree in International Business and Marketing and then an M.B.A. He also holds a certificate in imports and exports.

Odell’s background, like the curriculum he created for the class, combines theory and real-world experience. Before teaching, he bought and resold produce all over the country and was responsible for quality control. “While students are drawn to creating new products, they realize that they may also take something that already exists and improve it; raise the bar higher. That may end up being 90 percent of what students do,” Odell says.

Knowing how important hands-on learning is to Forman students, Odell brings in guest entrepreneurs such as Joe Hoke, a different learner who co-founded and built Connecticut’s largest ad agency, and was the first to be inducted into both the Hartford Advertising Hall of Fame and the Connecticut Art Directors Hall of Fame. “He showed us good ads versus bad ads, which prepared me to make good creative choices,” says Tucker Fry. Students created and presented their own ad campaigns. Hoke modified a workshop he’s given to ad agencies all over the world. “Students picked up the concepts as fast as senior people in the business,” he says.

But while their strengths may be obvious, students also have to address their weaknesses. Tucker Fry excels in math and programming, and his confidence in these areas shows. “I’m definitely weak in the details of documenting everything I do,” he says. “I’ll have to hire someone who’s really good at that part of the business.”

Jake Cloobeck knows what he has to do: “Find good people who can shore-up your weaknesses, but who you can trust and get along with.”

Powers believes his athletic experience at Forman helped him become more persuasive. “When you’re the captain of a team, you have to persuade other players,” he says.

“That’s selling.”

But as students honed their business plans, they struggled in another area. “They ran into trouble when I told them they could pick only one business to launch,” says Odell.

“These kids are often six steps ahead of me.”

Maybe next year Odell will have to cover serial entrepreneurship.

Thinking Through Your Eyes Brooke Crossman: A Different Way to Think 9

It’s the quietest classroom on campus.

Students are glued to Brooke Crossman as her shoulders sway, her eyebrows arch, her arms and hands move rapidly, and her facial expressions change. “They have to watch me to understand,” says Crossman. “And I’m working up a sweat.”

Crossman teaches American Sign Language (ASL), from beginner to advanced level.

She also chairs Forman’s World Language Department. Recently she added running the Community Service Program and serving as Senior Class Dean to her responsibilities. She’s also a dorm parent in Chace. After a full day of teaching, she picks up her young son from school and supervises 19 students. Her husband is also an educator in a nearby school district, and he coaches Boys’ Varsity Basketball at Forman.

This couple doesn’t need hobbies.

For students who struggle to learn the sounds of English, the thought of learning a foreign language is overwhelming. Crossman has heard it many times. “Students come to me and say, ‘I failed a language before,’” adds Crossman. “Then they excel at ASL because it’s a visual language. Not every child is an auditory learner.”

Different Languages for Different Learners In addition to ASL, Forman offers Latin and Spanish classes.

Students with strong auditory processing do well in Spanish.

But many ADHD students learn through movement, making ASL ideal. “I love it,” says Sarah Auch ’15. “I have ADHD and dyslexia.” Crossman finds Forman’s 75-minute class helps students focus. But when their focus wanes, she switches gears, and students pair up and move around.

Crossman came to Forman in 2005 from the American School for the Deaf, and she’s built Forman’s program. It’s a hybrid modeled after high school and college curricula.

Cross Train Your Brain Crossman’s classes are popular, and the first question she asks students: “Why are you here?” A common response: “ASL is easy.” Students soon realize that it’s anything but easy. They have to demonstrate proficiency expressively, meaning they can sign, and receptively, when she signs they must demonstrate they understand her.

Emily Cross ’15 takes ASL and has studied Spanish, and she sees differences and similarities: “You think differently; in ASL you think with your eyes.” She also sees similarities: “Your voice goes up at the end of sentences in Spanish; in ASL it’s done with your face.”

Cross, now in her third year of studying ASL, applied to some of the nation’s top colleges. They require three consecutive years of proficiency in a foreign language. ASL meets that requirement, at most colleges.

To make sure students master the content, Crossman uses tools designed for different learners: both a course organizer and a framing technique for each of the 30 units. These tools come from a center devoted to learning strategies for different learners—the Center for Research on Learning in Kansas. Crossman became certified in the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM), and she may be the only ASL teacher to adopt the proven techniques, which are used mostly for traditional academic subjects. With the addition of Crossman’s certification, Forman now has more teachers trained in the SIM than any other independent school.

ASL demands mental and physical coordination. There’s eye contact, facial expression, hand and body coordination with the dominant and non-dominant hand—all working together to convey meaning. Preston Novy ’16 admits: “I had a hard time moving my eyebrows.” Emily Cross agrees: “ASL is a full-body experience.”

Creative Cross Training Crossman’s creative teaching engages the brain in different ways. Students look forward to the annual Poetry Sign-andShare at a local school. Fourth-grade students write and then read a poem while Forman students interpret the poems using sign. There’s athletics, too. At a recent sporting event at The American School for the Deaf, Sarah Auch noted: “They’re so fast they can sign while dribbling.” The teacher and students were moved when Forman students signed the tenets of good sportsmanship: rules, opponents, officials, teammates, and self.

Signing Away Crossman admits that after her son was born there were days when she wondered how she would do it all: from supervising study hall to senior check-in at 9:55 p.m. Her son cried every night she closed the apartment door and left to go to the dorm. “It broke my heart,” she says.

No matter what details come up during her day, she works them out. “I continue to do what I do because I know I make a difference in students’ lives,” she says. She also knows her son is lucky to have such a strong connection with 19 wonderful sisters and all of the Forman community.

And when he wants his mother’s attention and more milk, instead of screaming, he signs: “Milk!”

Lion’s Pride Athletic Highlights The Forman Lions excelled in athletics this year, with 12 of our teams making it to the HVAL playoffs and multiple All-Star and All-League selections.

Fall: Cross Country Finalists in the Housatonic Valley Athletic League. Attended the New England Prep School Track Association Division IV Cross-Country Championships where two of our runners came in the top 20 runners overall (one male and one female), which allowed them to go on to compete in the All-Star race.

Boys’ Varsity Soccer Housatonic Valley Athletic League semifinalists. Three players represented Forman at the Western New England Prep School Soccer Association AllStar match. One player qualified for the HVAL Boys Soccer All-Stars First team 2014, and three received HVAL All-Star Honorable Mentions. Two players were part of the Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association Small School All-State Team and were recognized at the CSCA Banquet.

Boys’ Varsity Basketball Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) finalists. Coach John Strawson received title Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Three players were awarded the title of first team HVAL AllStars. One player was given honorable mention for the HVAL All-Stars and one player made the New England Prep School Men’s Basketball Association (NEPSMBA) Boys Class D All-Star second team.

Girls’ Basketball Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) semifinalists. Two players were awarded titles of the HVAL Girls Basketball All-Stars.

For the second year in a row, one of Forman’s lacrosse players was awarded the title of US Lacrosse High School AllAmerican Division III.

Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse Housatonic Valley Athletic League semifinalists. Two players were awarded the title of New England Prep School Women’s Lacrosse Association (NEPSWLA) All-Stars.

Support comes in many different forms at Forman’s doorstep, and it has been arriving in droves recently! Thank you all for the many ways you give back to this great school and help to define its future.

This is my fourth summer at Forman, and while some may expect the summer months to be a sleepy season on a large, empty campus, those visiting the school would find a flurry of activity. With your support, we have added two new dorms, a new Head’s residence, a Science Center, three new faculty homes, and numerous faculty apartments. These are the changes that you can see at a quick glance – take one step inside and you will find complete makeovers to Baillie, Morris, and Giles. There have been updates to the student center, improvements to the existing faculty apartments, and even new sod on the football field!

Without you, and this momentum of support and change, these great achievements could not exist. From the most recent alumni and parents to our “Golden Lions,” Forman is receiving an increase in support dollars and positive feedback. This care from our extended community is reflected in the happy faces of students and faculty, and on the grounds with our ever-improving facilities.

Your partnership with Forman School has helped us to make great strides and your support is vital as our next project is set in motion. Many of you have heard about our goals for increased space for the arts, and by our next issue, these plans will be laid out in depth.

No Limits David Rublin ’06 One wouldn’t think playing soccer in a boarding school and playing bass in a rock band have much to do with each other. But for David Rublin ’06, who started out as a soccer player with a chip on his shoulder and ended up with a bass in his hands keeping the beat for the hit group American Authors, the bridge from soccer to music was the turning point of his life.

“Rublin and his classmates started a band called the American Authors. Five years later, their hit single “Best Day of My Life” has hit 3 million sales in the United States.”

“I was very standoffish, a too cool for school kind of guy.”

Rublin came to Forman in his junior year from Maplewood, NJ. He had difficulty excelling in his local school, which focused on standardized test scores. “I had trouble concentrating in class and was told that I couldn’t go to college. I felt so stuck,” says Rublin. He felt increasingly misunderstood in the classroom. “I was very standoffish; a too cool for school kind of guy.” Rublin was a fierce and competitive soccer player, who found solace away from the classroom on the playing field.

“More than meets the eye.”

Although he struggled to exhibit his talents in the classroom, Rublin’s parents saw his potential. “I’m adopted.

My parents came together and realized that their child was struggling. They realized that there was more than meets the eye,” says Rublin. His parents decided to move him to a school that could better meet his needs. They decided to move him to Forman.

Finding a New Passion Forman gave Rublin the opportunity to play soccer for legendary coach and Athletic Director Scott McCarty ’76.

“Dave was a great addition to our athletic program,” says McCarty. “He worked his tail off and had an immense amount of heart.” But after tearing his ACL in a soccer game during his junior year, Rublin needed to find a new outlet. He turned to music, after learning the basics of playing bass from his older brother.

Harry Tubman, a former faculty member of the English Department, saw potential in Rublin. “David is emblematic of the commitment so many students make when they come to Forman. Choosing to face your learning differences head on is courageous and disruptive, reflecting an openness to new experiences. David had a phenomenal sense of humor and a restless intellect. A true renaissance man, he excelled in everything from Shakespeare to current events,” says Tubman.

Rublin adds, “Mr. Tubman would always tell me, ‘You have so much more inside of you that is creative. I wish you’d put it on paper.’” Tubman’s guidance gave Rublin the opportunity to focus on writing, recording, and learning. “Every time I walked into his classroom, I wanted to learn. I wanted to be there.” Tubman was a life-changing force throughout his tenure at Forman; “…he gave me responsibility.”

It was the small classroom experience, one-on-one attention, and dedicated faculty at Forman that helped

Rublin reach a new understanding of his learning style.

For the first time, Rublin was in charge of his intellectual journey. “Forman showed me that I was in control and that I was capable. It was no longer about what I couldn’t do. It was all about what I could do,” he says.

“You have something here.

You have to keep going.”

During his senior year, Rublin was appointed as the Assistant Musical Director for the year-end musical performance. “I didn’t know if I was going to sink or swim. But everyone kept telling me, ‘You have something here. You have to keep going,’” says Rublin. He gave the performance everything he had. Not surprisingly, it was a huge success. The Forman community commended him on the transformation he had made in just two short years. This final performance was proof that his learning differences were no longer limits, but opportunities.

“Studying music at Forman taught me how to question,” says Rublin. Music is about innovating, he explains. About pushing the envelope. About creating. About learning the rules, and then figuring out how to break them.

After graduating from Forman in 2006, Rublin went on to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. During his first year at Berklee, Rublin and his classmates started a band called the American Authors. Five years later, their hit single “Best Day of My Life” has hit 3 million sales in the United States, garnering them a BMI Pop Award. Rublin and his band are currently in the studio recording their second album, which is expected to release later this year.

They just finished touring with One Republic and are, no doubt, on the fast track to chart-topping success.

The Edge of Wonder Lucinda Weil Bunnen ’48 Photographer Lucinda Weil Bunnen’s work, like the light, is always changing.

Her photography defies categorization.

There’s her experimental “Weathered Chromes,” and her unusual take on the ordinary that reveals her wonder of the natural world — the found, the stumbled upon and the unexpected. She sees the extraordinary in the ordinary.

At an age when most people are planning their retirement, she took up the camera. It was a desire to capture images on a family vacation that landed her in a disagreement with her husband. She saw an arresting image: five nuns on a beach. Her husband told her she shouldn’t photograph them because it would be intrusive, but she persisted. “The camera gave me the power to know I could do what I wanted,” says Bunnen.

That was 45 years ago, and she hasn’t stopped pushing creatively; her passion for her craft has never waned.

Her photographs hang in The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Smithsonian in D.C., the Pushkin in Moscow, and the High Museum of Art in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, just to name a few.

If you’ve ever passed through the Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta, chances are good you’ve seen her work entitled Hatcher’s Pond, large-scale reflections of stalks and pods in an ethereal dance. “At Hatcher’s Pond,” says Bunnen, “I realized I was standing on the edge and seeing things I hadn’t seen before, and I started coming back as often as I could, to see the pond during different seasons, times of day, weather, and light conditions.”

She’s co-authored four books, including Trails, Tales and Transformations, her photographs from 1970-1999, and a good title for her life.

She Snatches Beauty Wherever Her Camera Leads Her “My camera has taken me everywhere; it has changed my life,” says Bunnen, now in her eighth decade. On a trip to Cuba, her granddaughter had to stop traffic while she captured the arresting colors and intimate images of locals in everyday activities: a woman smoking a cigar, a man on a balcony. Viewers of these intimate photos can almost smell the cigar and savor the sun.

She came to the Forman School from a 100-acre farm in Katonah, New York, because she was having difficulty reading. She remembers Mrs. Forman patiently asking her questions and trying to engage her, but the reserved Bunnen rarely answered.

She also came from an accomplished family. Her father worked on Wall Street, and her mother earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the age of 48. Her brother attended Harvard, but she knew she had different gifts, and she was a risk-taker.

Daring to See Differently The way she sees it: “Being different is not a disadvantage. It helps me be intuitive, and I don’t overanalyze things.” She captures the moment because she stays in the moment. “If you stay in the moment it helps you see,” says Bunnen, “and if you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.”

Growing up on a farm, Bunnen was surrounded by nature. She felt the pull of the natural world, and that has never left her. Her series “All About Trees” explores the unexpected outlines, the light and shadows of trees in the natural world. The impeccable compositions, the slant of the light, every image is beguiling in Bunnen’s trained eye.

And she’s as adept at capturing people, from celebrities to the unknown, as she is the natural world.

Along the way she studied with teachers and pushed

herself to master new mediums. She’s gone from film to digital to her iPhone, which is always in her pocket on her daily walks on her 30-acre grounds in Atlanta. She’s experimented in every medium from Polaroids to slides, and has spent countless hours in her darkroom.

Her generosity is as legendary as her talent.

Thirty years ago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta established the Bunnen Collection with her original gift of photographs. Ever since then, she’s collaborated with her peers and the museum to assemble a world-class holding that established the High as one of the nation’s premiere collections of contemporary photography.

She continues to support the High’s photography collection, adding hundreds of prints. In 2014, the museum opened a gallery dedicated solely to photography and named it after her. The Collection now comprises more than 650 works and includes prints by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Sally Mann, Cindy Sherman, William Wegman, Chuck Close, Lucas Samaras, William Eggleston, and her own work.

Bunnen is having her best year. The prolific photographer has just finished two shows: one, an exhibition of images of Mexico, and “Weathered Chromes,” made up of 60-yearold slides she recently left in the rain, literally. She also oversees the foundation she and her late husband set up.

“I don’t see just one thing; I try to be open to the world,” she says.

And to Forman students who may see things differently, and may find their gifts later in life, she advises: “Be open to what might come to you. Maybe no one else in your family will do what you do, but let it happen.”

For someone who dares to see, new worlds await right outside her back door. Lucinda Weil Bunnen’s eyes are always open.

In May, Forman hosted its annual Alumni Weekend.

The weekend’s events kicked off with a beautiful cocktail reception at Head of School, Adam Man’s home. The weather could not have been more perfect on Saturday as alumni gathered for a BBQ lunch on the Green under the Graduation Tree, followed by student-led tours and an alumni lacrosse game. Following the lacrosse game, alumni dressed to impress for a dinner at the Litchfield Inn in honor of Helen Waldron and her 25 years of service to Forman. The Class of 1965 had a great showing, with many classmates coming to campus to be honored as Golden Lions for their 50th reunion. The Class of 1985 was celebrating their 30th reunion and had the largest attendance for the weekend, however, the decades of the ’90s and the ’00s had a great showing as well.

Alumni: Donald Stopp ’49 Peter Barnes ’61 Mieka Edelstein ’99 Donald Stopp ’49 Donald Louis Stopp passed away on December 15, 2014 in Palmetto, FL. He was born on March 15, 1928 and grew up in Pen Argl, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation from high school, he joined the United States Army, assigned to the Medical Corp stationed in Seoul, South Korea (1946-48). Afterwards, he attended the Forman School in Litchfield, Connecticut, in preparation for study at Duke University. He received a BA in American History from Duke and subsequently attended East Stroudsburg University to become certified to teach in the public schools of Pennsylvania. Likewise, he became certified in New York State through courses studied at Canisius College and Buffalo State. In 1967, Don married Dr. Jacklin Bolton. In 1975, he created Timesavers Maps which he wholesaled primarily in the Northeastern states.

In 1981, he started a companion retail store named Pac n’ Ship, located in the Sheridan Harlem Square in Amherst, NY. After selling Pac n’ Ship in 1985, he returned to Timesavers in Lockport.

It was sold in 1991 at which time Don retired but still remained active in the International Map Dealers Association, Dallas, Texas of which he was a charter member (1981).

Don was a member of the First 48

Presbyterian Church in Lockport, and he sang in its choir as well as in its Patchwork Singers. Don was also a member of the Lock City Glee Club and the Lockport Chorale. In addition, while in Florida, he was a member of the Anna Maria Island Chorus and Orchestra and the Palmetto Presbyterian Church Choir.

Besides singing, his interests included sports, volunteering, history, and writing autobiographical articles pertaining to his childhood in Pennsylvania. Don is survived by wife, Jacklin Bolton Stopp, brother, Robert, two sisters, Joanne Seese (Bryan) and Marilyn Mistry, a cousin, Charles (Barbara) Stopp, several nieces and nephews, and many supportive friends.

Peter Barnes ’61 Peter Barnes died peacefully Friday, March 27, 2015 in Cohasset, MA. He was 76 years old and had been ill with cancer and partially disabled for the past few years and final two months. He was born in Attleboro on October 5, 1938. Peter was educated in Mansfield elementary schools and The Forman School in Litchfield, CT during his high school years. He lived his entire life in the Barnes home in Mansfield, and he spent every summer in his family’s home on Martha’s Vineyard.

Peter was a hard worker, first at Mr. Bannon’s Mansfield Bleachery and, for many years afterwards, for Bob DeLong’s Acorn Manufacturing

Company. He was a true lover of dogs and a great sports fan, and also enjoyed traveling around the U.S. to visit with nieces and nephews.

Peter leaves his closest relatives, sister, Margot (Neil) Goodwin of Cambridge, sister, Rosalee (David) McCullough of Boston, brother, Samuel Barnes of Pittsfield, MA, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence (“Clare”), mother, Doreen (“Dodie”), and brother, Thomas K. (“Tokey”) Barnes; and by four half siblings.

He was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, and Samuel’s wife, Joy Woods Barnes.

Mieka Edelstein ’99 Mieka Ryan Edelstein, 33, of Emmaus, PA lost his brave battle with cancer on Thursday May 29, 2014. In spite of the aggressive cancer he remained incredibly stoic and never complained. He had an amazing will to live and as a testimony to his wit and lovable nature, his friends were with him through the end. He is survived by his mother, Jonni Balliet and her husband, David Balliet; father, Jeff Edelstein and his wife, Sue Edelstein; sister, Kate Edelstein and step-brothers, Peter Balliet and John Balliet. Mieka was predeceased by Andrew Balliet.
