Before long, we were overrun.

I started bringing tomatoes to The Food Depot, where food bankers happily lined up for tomato sandwiches and caprese bites. For months, we shared the simple joy of food grown and tended by someone they knew from a backyard just a few miles away.

Last summer I stepped into my backyard, determined. Prepped with weeks of online research, mountains of soil, and several eight-foot metal tubs, I was ready to grow my own food. Within days, those raised beds had become my family’s summer project. We watered constantly, battled pesky bugs, and learned the unique needs of each sprout.

There is something magical and fulfilling about local food. Food grown close to home often reflects local tastes and traditions, and it reaches the table at its freshest.

This experience should not only be limited to those who have the time, physical ability, or resources to maintain a garden. Local food belongs to all New Mexicans.

As the weeks passed, magic happened. I couldn’t believe my eyes when tomatoes grew so heavy they overwhelmed our original trellis system. Tiny tomatillos hid in their husks beside Armenian cucumbers that seemed impossibly large.

Morning watering became a time of peace, and progress brought a sense of accomplishment.

These beliefs have motivated The Food Depot to strengthen our investment in local food sourcing.

We are dedicated to this cause so that every family will be able to enjoy the same connection to locally grown food that brought so much joy to my own backyard.

Welcome, Randall Partin A Letter from The Food Depot’s new Development Director

Greetings! I’m so thrilled to be part of The Food Depot team as the new Director of Development.

For the past two years, I served as the Director of Finance and Operations at McCurdy Ministries in Española, New Mexico. During that time, McCurdy grew substantially in staffing, finances, and programming, largely due to a major Family Resource Center grant from the State of New Mexico. Over that same timeframe, McCurdy developed a number of meaningful partnerships with several area nonprofits, including The Food Depot through the Food 4 Kids program.

Prior to McCurdy, I was an ordained United Methodist pastor, serving congregations in North Carolina, Texas, and here in New Mexico (where we partnered with Roadrunner Food Bank). For six years, I

also served as the Provost/Assistant to the Bishop for The New Mexico Conference of The United Methodist Church, where I held a wide range of responsibilities for administrative, financial, and programmatic areas, ranging from disaster relief to campus ministries and camps.

Before that, I was faculty at The University of New Mexico for five years (I hold a PhD in Political Science from The University of Colorado as well as an MDiv from Duke Divinity School). At UNM, I taught courses in State Politics and Policy, American Politics, Political Parties, and was the undergraduate honors Advisor for the Political Science Department.

One of my favorite experiences as faculty was to offer a grant-funded “town hall” style course where the students engaged in lively and deliberative policy-focused discussions rather than merely learned about them.

You might pick up on some recurring themes in my background– collaboration, community, and compassion. All these things have run together for me for quite some time, and I’m so humbled to join The Food Depot, which is all about these things, too! It feels like such a wonderful fit!

In my spare time, I’m an avid reader, I enjoy good food, and I love to get outside and hike in and around Santa Fe. I’ve also walked the Camino Santiago de Compostela in Spain and the Pilgrim’s Way from Winchester to

Canterbury in the United Kingdom (famous from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales). I live here in Santa Fe with my two special needs cats, Peach and Daisy.

Thanks so much for having me onboard and I can’t wait to make a difference alongside the incredible staff, volunteers, and supporters of The Food Depot.

The result was more than a policy victory. It was the restoration of a proven program that many believed had ended.

It's mid-June, and Jill Dixon has just made an important announcement to her staff: The Food Depot will once again administer the

Regional Farm to Food Bank program (RF2FB).

New Mexico-grown food will once again reach food banks, and then clients, across the state.

A year earlier, this outcome seemed impossible.

In March 2025, the United States Department of Agriculture announced the abrupt end of federal funding for the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA). Known in New Mexico as Regional Farm to Food Bank, LFPA allowed states to purchase fresh produce, eggs, beef, and other foods directly from local producers at fair market value. Food went from producers, to food banks, to local distributions.

Between 2022 and 2025, RF2FB brought $4.6 million to primarily small farms and ranches in New Mexico, most of them 25 acres or less. More than 200 producers benefited from the program.

The cancellation came with little warning. Farmers had already planted fields, purchased equipment, and planned for a growing season that suddenly lost a major buyer.

The loss of RF2FB was a significant blow to New Mexico agriculture.

Determined to preserve the program, The Food Depot partnered with the New Mexico Food and Agriculture

Policy Council and Farm to Table New Mexico to develop a strategy for the 2026 legislative session. Working with legislators from both parties, the coalition helped advance Senate Bill 108, which proposed $2 million in state funding to revive a state-run RF2FB for a year.

The session began on January 20th. Almost daily, The Food Depot met with lawmakers, thanked bill sponsors, testified in committees, and worked alongside producers and hunger-relief partners to share the program's impact. The Food Depot also brought back a former RF2FB staff member to share the program's value.

The message was simple: the program worked. RF2FB supported local agriculture, strengthened regional food systems, and increased access to fresh food for New Mexicans. Advocacy continued through Food and Farms Day and Hunger Action Day. In the end, efforts paid off. Funding for RF2FB was included in HB 2, New Mexico's state budget bill.

In June, The Food Depot was selected by the New Mexico Department of Agriculture through an RFP process to administer the renewed program. Bonnie Murphy, who previously worked with RF2FB, returned to help lead the effort and bring her experience to the state-led program.

RF2FB was not the only foodsecurity victory of the session.

Double Up Food Bucks expanded to allow SNAP participants to purchase meat, nuts, and eggs in addition to produce. Universal school meals were funded once again, along with other programs that improve food access.

Toward the end of the session, The Food Depot took a moment to formally recognize several legislators and state employees who are making food-secure futures a reality.

These champions remind us all that progress truly happens when people work together and the return of Regional Farm to Food Bank is proof.

Employees donated $111,457 and 5,000 pounds of food to The Food Depot, all in just two weeks.

Each spring, the Community Partnerships Office at Los Alamos National Laboratory launches a LANL Spring Food Drive to benefit The Food Depot. However, this is no ordinary campaign.

Lasting just two weeks, the LANL Spring Food Drive is The Food Depot's largest private drive of the year. The effort brings together financial contributions, food donations, and volunteer support, with enthusiasm growing year after year.

The 2026 campaign was the most successful yet.

A key reason for the drive’s success is the network of employee "champions" who help lead fundraising. Each champion represents an area of the lab and oversees a collection barrel, encouraging colleagues to participate and sharing information about the food bank's most-needed items. Before the campaign began, Food Depot staff hosted a “lunch and learn” training session to provide information, answer questions, and distribute materials.

More than 80 volunteers gave their time during the drive.

LANL encourages their employees to support The Food Depot through “time, treasures, or talent.” The Community Partnerships office put out a call for volunteers, and people answered. During the twoweek campaign, 80 lab employees volunteered with The Food Depot and nonprofit partners, including San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen.

That commitment continues throughout the year. LANL employees volunteer each month at The Food Depot's drive-through pantry in Los Alamos, and the lab sponsors a monthly volunteer shift at Casita de Comida, The Food Depot's no-cost market in Española.

"LANL teams volunteer all year long," explains Lead Volunteer Coordinator Pauline Montoya. "But during the food drive, we really increase the number of LANL shifts.

Employees are here all day on Saturdays. They're very competitive,” she laughs. “But they’re great volunteers.”

The $111,457 donated during the 2026 Spring Food Drive will help provide more than 450,000 meals across Northern New Mexico, an increase of more than 110,000 meals compared to last year.

Thank You, Lettercarriers and Donors! counties, expanding partnerships and helping more communities participate in the effort.

The second Saturday in May is one of the most anticipated days of the year for food banks across the country.

That's when food bankers and letter carriers team up for Stamp Out Hunger, the nation's largest single-day food drive. Participation is simple: leave a bag of nonperishable food by your mailbox, and your letter carrier will do the rest!

Where Our Food Comes From Food enters The Food Depot through three pathways: donated food, purchased food, and government commodities through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). To meet food bank nutrition goals of distributing at least 50% fruits and vegetables and 15% protein while providing a balanced selection of foods, each source must be carefully managed.

By the end of the day on May 9th, the success was undeniable.

Together, people donated more than 31,000 pounds of shelf-stable food to Stamp out Hunger 2026, the highest total since before the pandemic. Behind every bag of food was a letter carrier who joyfully picked up hundreds of pounds of food during an already busy delivery route.

Now, volunteers at The Food Depot's warehouse are sorting those donations and preparing them for distribution through partner agencies across Northern New Mexico.

Thank you to the letter carriers, NALC leaders, volunteers, and community members who made this year's drive such a success!

A Renewed Focus on Local Food because of federal uncertainty, The Food Depot added a brand new position tasked with sourcing more fresh, local, and culturallyappropriate food. The board of directors and leadership team made a deliberate investment to ensure high-quality food remained a priority, regardless of changing conditions.

When Ole Bye was in his early twenties, he grew his first tomato plant. “It was pretty disgusting,” he says with regret. “It was in a little box.

It pretty much died.”

While not born with a green thumb, he’s always had an innate passion for locally grown food. Now, that drive shapes his work at The Food Depot’s Product Procurement Specialist.

There are less hands handing the food and less people taking a cut from the product before it gets to The Food Depot.

“We need to shorten the supply chain from global producers to more local producers,” Ole explains.

“So much of the food offered to food banks is available one time or sold through third-parties with no connection to the product or the people.”

Direct relationships with producers, real people who know the food entering the food bank, is Ole’s main goal. To guide local food purchasing, he established a food shed of 275 miles around Santa Fe. The region includes Southern Colorado, the Navajo Nation, the Rio Grande Valley, and El Paso, allowing The Food Depot to purchase products such as cornmeal from the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation, potatoes from the San Luis Valley in Colorado, and a growing variety of food from New Mexico farmers and ranchers.

Each week, Ole receives hundreds of purchasing requests. His job is to discern which of these faceless companies are reliable and have high-quality products. “This is really the hardest part,” he says. “It’s easy to find random lots of surplus products from brokers that may not be trustworthy in the end.”

“I want to increase the proportion of the [procured] food that is grown in New Mexico,” Ole says. “I care about farmland and the agency of small family-scale farms to make decisions and have a livelihood. I also believe in connecting the needs of the communities we serve with the producers in our area.”

The Food Depot does have a standard product list from vendors that actively produce the products themselves. “They know the food, so it’s a better product,” says Ole.

These values come to life in the food Ole has procured for clients: buffalo for pueblo distributions direct from the ranch, tortillas made fresh that morning, and pinto beans harvested in New Mexico.

In just six months, Ole has significantly expanded purchasing from the regional food shed.

Guided by his intuition, he works to fill the warehouse and the tables of families.

Ole says he hasn’t given up on growing his own tomatoes. “One day I might have a farmstead of my own,” he muses. “But right now, I’m pretty committed to getting good food for other people.”

Food Rescue at The Food Depot The amount of donated food available to food banks varies widely across the Feeding America network. Food banks in urban areas have access to more grocery stores, manufacturers, and distribution centers. This increases food donations, even up to 90% of total food distributed. In contrast, The Food Depot serves a rural region with fewer opportunities for food rescue.

Even so, The Food Depot rescues nearly 2 million pounds of food each year that might otherwise go to waste. Six days a week, drivers begin their routes before the sunrise, collecting donations from grocery stores, bakeries, and other business partners throughout Santa Fe.

Once donations arrive at the warehouse, trained volunteers sort both perishable and shelf-stable foods to ensure clients feel confident in the food they receive from The Food Depot In the Fresh Room, volunteers closely inspect fruits, vegetables, dairy, and repack eggs. Foods that remain safe to eat are hand-labeled with dates.

Food no longer suitable for people is given a new purpose feeding animals at a family farm. The most fragrant room, the Bread Room, is filled with donated loaves, pastries, and other baked goods sorted for distribution.

Meanwhile, the Sort Room walls are filled with categories: dry goods, cereal, canned beans, canned fruit, etc. Volunteers inspect packaging, ingredient labels, and expiration dates of donated items before organizing food into categories.

Every donation rescued in partnership with a business or collected through a food drive follows the same careful process before reaching a family’s table.

Bringing Candidates and Food Banks Together Advocating for the future of New Mexico’s families also means helping state leaders understand food insecurity in our state.

With a new governor set to take office in January, 2026 is a year of transition in New Mexico politics.

Food banks serve all the entire state, reaching communities in all 33 counties. The Food Depot alone reaches more than 43,000 people.

Along with providing food, food banks have the responsibility to help elected officials understand the rising cost of living and the policies that can alleviate poverty.

To help those seeking the governor’s office better understand food banks, The Food Depot invited every gubernatorial candidate to tour our Santa Fe warehouse as soon as the ballot was finalized. Doug Turner and Greg Hull toured the warehouse

to learn about operations and programs. Deb Haaland and Sam Bregman toured and participated in a Thursday morning distribution.

Each moment gave these leaders the opportunity to learn the realities of food insecurity, understand more about the food bank network, and hear about state-funded initiatives.

To educate candidates and the public, The Food Depot released a comprehensive candidate questionnaire before early voting began. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The Food Depot cannot support or oppose candidates for office or coordinate activities with political campaigns. However, nonprofits may conduct nonpartisan voter education efforts. Candidates for governor and lieutenant governor were asked about state funding, food access in rural areas, local food systems, and

The Food Depot’s advocacy team also continued their relationship with the League of Women Voters of Santa Fe County.

Together with the League and the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper, The Food Depot hosted three candidate forums in late April: Santa Fe County Sheriff, NM Land Commissioner, and NM Secretary of State. Each forum welcomed approximately 70 attendees to the warehouse and reached additional viewers through the Santa Fe New Mexican’s YouTube channel. The forums accomplished several important advocacy goals: educating voters, connecting The Food Depot with candidates, giving community members an opportunity to see the warehouse, and generating media coverage.

Several weeks after the primary, The Food Depot’s advocacy team was invited to share its approach to candidate engagement with food banks across the Feeding America network. This presentation highlighted how nonprofit forums and candidate tours can strengthen community engagement and help future leaders better understand food insecurity in their region. The

positive response from the Feeding America Government Relations Team reinforced the value of this work.

The candidates who toured the warehouse this spring or participated in a forum may become any one of New Mexico’s future statewide leaders. By building relationships and sharing the importance of healthy food access, The Food Depot helps ensure decision-makers are prepared to support food banks and healthy food access in our state.

Supporting SNAP with Resource Navigation Emergency food can only go so far in the work to end hunger.

Recognizing this, The Food Depot established the Resource Navigation Program in 2019. The program connects clients to resources beyond emergency food and then supports them as they take steps toward long-term food security.

A major focus of Nathalie Beltran and Cecilia Gutierrez, current bilingual Navigators, is SNAP Outreach. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps, helps eligible households purchase groceries. In July 2025, federal budget legislation made significant changes to SNAP, leaving many New Mexicans uncertain about their eligibility and the program’s new requirements.

To help families navigate these changes, Cecilia and Nathalie have spent the past year meeting people where they are. A partnership with the New Mexico Health Care Authority, the state agency that administers SNAP, has supported travel and SNAP outreach resources.

Applying for benefits can be overwhelming. By providing friendly outreach across Northern New Mexico, The Food Depot’s Navigators are making sure people stay on SNAP and access the benefits they need to thrive.

Be Part of Neighbor to Neighbor!

The Food Depot’s largest fundraiser is back! Neighbor to Neighbor is the friendly competition where neighborhoods, businesses, churches, clubs, and community groups come together to raise funds for their favorite food bank.
