The winter season brings somewhat of a recovery – recharge – reset and get organised time of year for the floral industry with the spring/summer high seasons typically when the high volume weddings take place.

In floral designs for weddings, events and interiors this winter we are seeing deep contrasting colour combinations often on mass for impact with clean strong design lines and a feeling of luxury - deep burgundy – purples – red and lots of pastel designs – peaches – blush – pastel pinks with a strong drama pop of colour in red or orange. Terracotta – earthy natural colours – blush and nude pinks with textural elements of dried materials are the flipside they are natural – organic and relaxing. Lots of no foliage – just blooms – with strong structural designs prevail and we are seeing lots of playful monochrome designs and accent fresh fruit.

This issue we have featured some of Australia’s incredibly talented male florists, stylists and artists. We feature 3 floral workshops - each workshop presents different learning opportunities. Workshops allow the everyday flower lovers to meet their flower heroes - get hands on and build confidence designing with flowers and for florists – stylists and creatives an opportunity to learn new skills and open your mind to new design concepts.

Flowering NOW - Melbourne’s florist community came together in June to share their love of nature in ways that defy traditional understandings of floristry. Flowering NOW presented the unique and quintessential styles of a range of individuals who work ardently with the most untameable and transient materials. Capturing the moments of growth and abundance as well as celebrating the wilting and decay, 10 florists created installations across Collingwood Arts Precinct, giving a glimpse into modern imaginings of flowering as an artform. Katie Marx and I had been dreaming of an opportunity to work on a creative project that engages with our florist community, that emphasises the artful, ambitious and unconventional side of what we all do.

An exhibition of sorts, where there is no brief, no restrictions or commercial demands. We saw this as a chance to share amongst one another and a wider viewing public our different signature styles, to emphasis our capacity to forage, build, gather and grow flowers in a way that belies traditional understandings of floristry. Our vision was for this to be florist’s choice on a grand, immersive scale. So much thanks to Collingwood Arts Precinct – everyone who

participated and attended, to our generous and wonderful suppliers - entertainment – helpers – friends and family Katie and I were incredibly humbled by the positive response, joy and sense of community this first event generated. Will there be a sequel? For Katie and I it’s back to flowering as usual, with full hearts and inspired minds! How do you feel including natural elements of nature impact or add to the styling of events and weddings?

As a lover of flowers and nature in general, I always try and include an element of flora or natural elements in my work.

Flowers for me are the finishing touch for styling that not only look beautiful but also create a sensory impact with colour, scent and texture.

Wo u l d y o u a g r e e t h a t t h e b e s t d e s i g n f l o r i s t s a r e t h e o n e s that can develop concepts similar to a stylist based on the colour - aesthetic - mood and design brief ? W ho have you worked with in Australia that you feel are tr ue floral concept design stars?

Definitely! For me, my styling always starts from a concept that can be derived from left field and not even related to what I am creating, but that conceptual starting point allows me to push the idea and think outside the box.

Most florists that I work with have the same inclination including Saskia at Grandiflora, Fleur at The Studio by Fleur, Myra from My Violet, Jai from Hermetica, Sean from Mr Cook and George from Seed.

Having followed your styling work in magazines and on instag ram for years its clear you have a love of blue hydrangea - where did this come from and is it one of your favourite florals ?

Yes! The hydrangea is my favourite flower, until lilac season starts but because they are super quick to bloom, the hydrangea has my top spot! I grew up with hydrangeas in the garden at home and have always loved them.

I love their full bloom heads and the variation in colours, the blue and white being my faves, and they are great for styling as they look great en masse.

Definitely. A lot of my favourite colour schemes and love for texture and layering come from nature. When I am designing a room I always have the styling in mind and this is often derived from the type of flower I see in that room once its finished.

The main lounge room will always have tall green foliage such as chestnut or oak as we have large trees at the farm of both.

The master bedroom will have white flowers - hydrangea from November to March, then roses and tulips. We have just wallpapered the formal dining room with Iksel’s D-dream wall mural from Boyac, depicting an idealised landscape of flora and fauna. Date and banana palms, delphinium and ostriches are depicted in the artwork, which mimics many plants (and animals!) in the garden. It’s my favourite room as it feels like the outside has forced its way inside and who doesn’t want to be surrounded by nature all the time?!

After trying for years to find a stylish, slim yet workable tool belt, florist Katie Marx eventually decided to design one her self. A smart tool belt that can be worn with dresses or jeans, to look good enough to wear on the job in restaurants, private homes and venues, to sit comfortably higher or lower on the hip and either to the left or right side.

Room to fit the essentials of the trade, plus credit cards and keys, without being bulky. With this tool belt there is no need to take a handbag on site. The belt goes around the hips without needing belt loops, and is easily adjusted to your personal size and higher/lower preference. The main pocket is designed to take your phone, keys, lip balm etc while an elastic strap holds cable ties in an easy reach position.

Out of sight, on the leg side of the pouch is a pocket for business and credit cards.

Secateurs are always at hand in a secateur pouch attached to the outside of the main pouch. If you need two pairs, an extra single secateur pouch can be purchased separately which threads onto pouch belt for double secateur holding.

Each tool belt is built using locally sourced leather from Ballarat, Australia and natural vegetable dyes are used for colouring them. While designed with florists in mind, these toolbelts are already proving to be the perfect accessory for other industries. Brent Rosenberg is a Melbourne based artist, known for his use of shapes and angles, Brents previous life in graphic design, and days spent working in galleries surrounded by ‘creative types’, led him down the path of turning his hand to art full time.

“I spent my entire childhood with a sketch pad in hand, painting and drawing, so although I have opted for a digital medium for now, I am sure I will experiment with other mediums as time goes by,” he says. Brent’s collections are inspired by his travels to urban jungles such as the Big Apple, New York City, Tokyo and Melbourne. “I wanted my pieces to have street appeal, be edgy and different, using texturised elements to compliment the sharp geometric lines’ he says. Like most artists, Brent is a perfectionist.

And a humble one at that. “My next collection is only as good as my last.

I really hope people enjoy what I do, and love it enough to want to put it up on their walls. It is the greatest accolade to me when someone wants to hang my art on his or her wall and stare at it every day. I am so grateful for that.”

Brent doesn’t take anything that comes his way for granted, a cool, calm and logic approach to everything he does has helped form a creative comfort zone, allowing him to create with freedom and use his imagination to its fullest. Bruce and Elizabeth Whiteman have been growing cymbidium orchids together for more than 40 years. Bruce started work helping his parents in the nursery and growing peaches. It didn’t take long to realise there was no competition – the beauty and majesty of the cymbidium orchid soon out shone the peaches. Once Bruce and Elizabeth married they turned what was essentially a hobby for his parents into a business. They enjoy working together and consider it a privilege to have been able to raise their three children on the farm. They now have the fun of the next generation with their ten grandchildren who visit regularly and love to help out and earn pocket money during the flower season. Whiteman’s Orchids take pride in supplying locally grown, first quality cymbidium orchids for the cut flower and pot plant market.

The nursery is “eco friendly” using bio-organics and rain water collected and recycled on site.

B o t a n i c a l I n q u i r y, D a n i e l S h i p p a r t i s t s t a t e m e n t Images : Daniel Shipp This work is a series of elaborate photographic dioramas constructed in the studio in which nature, geography, and physics are shuffled to present familiar but fictional environments. The colour, shape, and texture of the unremarkable plants I’ve collected become storytelling elements which, when staged against the backdrop of common urban environments, provoke the viewer to imagine their own narratives.

In Georgina Reid’s short essay “The Poetry of Plants” published on her website “The Planthunter”, she discusses our inherent drive to interact with nature and our increasing distance from it. Inspired by this contradiction, this body of work was shaped by some key questions: How does civilisation’s unstoppable march forward play out against plants sole mission to survive and reproduce? What if the weedy common, and disregarded plants were to become rare and studied specimens in the future?

“ Established Supply Corridor ”

My visual approach was influenced by Robert John Thornton’s ‘Temple of Flora’ - a series of engraved plates commissioned in the 18th century which are a document for the classification of unusual botanical specimens presented in the form of darkly romanticised illustrations with an other-worldly aesthetic & Botanical Inquiry & alludes to the studied aspect of ‘Temple of Flora’ but romanticises a new epoch where plants have adapted to the increasingly brutal impact of humans and now live amongst it.

This sense of evolution is reflected in the way I have freely arranged elements of different plants, often creating unidentifiable hybrids. A long-standing interest in visual illusion steers the crafting of these images. They rely on the manipulation of optics made possible with a camera, and employ traditional cinematic techniques for achieving visual effects “in-camera” rather than on a computer. It was important to me that the images retain an organic, hand crafted quality and an imperfect atmosphere one I didn’t believe I could achieve with digital compositing techniques.

These images reframe how we might view small examples of life force in our daily lives but I would also suggest that they resonate with something broader and innate that connecting with plants can make us feel. I hope that these images remind us of a vitality that would be regrettable for us to lose touch with.

Words : Lynne Dallas, Creative Director, Pearsons School of Floristry Images : Ariana Photography Studio Pearsons School of Floristry have hosted some wonderful collaborations recently, with leading industry designers and floral brands, and when we first sparked the idea of a collaboration with John Emmanuel we knew it would be special. John had been wanting to run a Master Class and the collaboration with Pearsons was not only perfect timing but turned out to be a match made in floral heaven. Not one to do things by halves and with a multitude of amazing ideas John had a very clear goal of what he wanted to achieve, a fully immersive hands on class, where participants could ask all the questions they could think of, would learn real world skills and knowledge and take part in the creation of a show stopping luxury event. Every detail was thought of, not just the floral designs but the best suppliers for quality product, what table decor would be used, prop hire, structures and lighting and of course location. John chose the beautiful historic Curzon Hall, the perfect setting for a luxury event.

John really is the leading light in Luxury Wedding flowers and so well respected in the industry that it soon became clear that people would love to be involved in this spectacular event. The participants were in for a real treat with the addition of Luxury Wedding Industry experts coming to talk and answer questions on topics such as working with high end clients, trends in luxury weddings and how to maximise your social media potential.

After months of discussions and behind the scenes activity everything came together and the stage was set for an incredible floral adventure. The prep day alone was an eye opener, 10 of Pearsons fabulous current Certificate lll students put their hands up to help out, with stripping flowers, reflexing roses and soaking foam, what an awesome job. It was magical to see the room transform in stages with construction of a bespoke white walkway floor, custom made heavy duty tables to hold to the weight of the trusses and flowers overhead and even gold pillars for the back drop of all backdrops. As we watched somewhere close to 11,000 stems of flowers being unloaded and wheeled in on trollies we knew it was going to be big!

The day one excitement built as we gathered together in the beautiful surrounds of Curzon Hall, Pearsons School of Floristry team, John Emmanuel team and 21 enthusiastic participants eager to begin what was to be the first ever John Emmanuel Luxury Wedding Flowers Master Class. After a meet and great it was over to John to share his vision for the next two days. His plan was that together we would fill the beautiful banquet room with overflowing luxury florals.

It was an exciting prospect and as the participants learnt that the first job was to fill 24 metres of trusses with 2000 bunches of babies breath, as a base! The eyes just got wider and wider. Every detail was thought of and carefully carried out, down to the exquisite brocade table linen and gold cutlery, crystal bowls and bespoke custom made gold table centre boxes. Day one was so much fun and by the time we sat down to listen to an inspiring talk on the luxury wedding industry we had completed the set up of two 6 metre Kings tables, with decadent floral overhangs that cascaded onto the floor. How could day two top that! In true John Emannuel style the bar was raised even higher, with John instructing the participants on how to create a free form design on a four metre high backdrop made up of four shining gold columns.

This piece certainly was a show stopper and the group learnt some great techniques for creating structures with very useful mechanics.

Everyone worked together so well and one of the best things was sharing time and talking with other like minded florists and creatives. From established floral business to newbie florists and event stylist, everyone went home having made new friends and connections in the industry. Day two was relaxed and fun and everyone got time to spend with John and his team or the Pearsons team, and also enjoyed an inspirational talk on trends in the luxury wedding industry and social media. A great day for sharing and learning and really taking in the incredible florals that had been created. Johns vision truly had been realised and we were going to get to celebrate it in style with a glamorous cocktail evening to show case what had been achieved. 2,000 bunches of babies breath, 5,000 stems for top quality roses, 450 stems of cascading Phalaenopsis orchids, Tulips and Spray Roses exquisitely designed into the most luxurious, extravagant white and gold wedding florals.

Distinguished guests from the wedding and floral industries gathered to see the spectacular designs and to share a glass of champagne to celebrate this outstanding achievement. Participants were awarded a certificate by John and Barbara Pollak director of Pearsons School of Floristry and there was even dry ice smoke and pyrotechnics to add to the magic. Pearsons School of Floristry loved every minute of this collaboration and we were all blown away by Johns passion, generosity, kindness and incredible talent.

We couldn’t have asked for more.

As you will read, Matthew Landers was born into a life surrounded by flowers and his drive, motivation and creativity kicked in at a very early age – nurtured – supported and encouraged by his mother Linda Landers. Matthew Landers has explored and developed his experience and talents with heart and passion, winning many awards along the way.

Invested in continuing to learn and work relentlessly hard to achieve all of his goals, Matthew Landers has produced a leading floral brand and has an extensive support team that creates full service florals across all spectrums of design, gifting, weddings and events. Matthew Lander’s other biggest accomplishment is the Matthew Landers Academy which is now in three states of Australia and a leading training facility. 1989 Entered first Floral Compeitition (aged 3) at Gosnells Flower Show, won 1st Prize in Flower Bowl which was actually Chryssie blooms in a saucer of wet sand in a circular patter (under 12’s category) 1990 Won both Under 12 Categories at Age 4, Gosnells Flower Show. 2000 May (aged 13) Won first Interflora Regional Heat & Novice Category. 2000 May (13) Won WA Interflora Novice of the Year.

2001 March (14) Started working Friday nights, Saturday + Sunday as Junior Florist at Flowers in the City (Perth). 2001 (14) Won First place in 3 heats for Interflora Junior Florist of the Year + Won WA Interflora Junior Florist of the Year. 2001 December (turned 15) Started Full time Traineeship at Perth Florist & Flowers in the City 2002 (15) February gained skills recognition for Cert II and commenced Cert III at Challenger TAFE 2002 (15) Won 2 of 3 heats for Interflora Junior Florist of the Year, then won WA Interflora Junior Florist of the Year 2002 (15) December completed Certificate III and Won WA Trainee of the year 2003 (16) Won 3 heats for Interflora Florist of the Year, WA Interflora Junior Florist of the year, 3rd Place Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show Tesselaar Shop Window Competition + Runner Up WA Interflora Florist of the Future. 2003 (17) Demonstrations for Interflora, Kings Park Wildflower Festival. 2004 (17) January - Went into Business with Mother Linda Landers.

Purchased Florist shop in Nedlands WA 2004 (17) Won 3 heats for Interflora Florist of the Year, WA Interflora Junior Florist of the year, 2nd Place Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show Bridal Competition + Runner Up WA Interflora Florist of the Future. 2005 (18) Won 2 of 3 heats for Interflora Florist of the Year, Gold Medal WA Worldskills Finals + Peoples choice award, Winner of WA Interflora Florist of the Future, Runner Up Australian Interflora Florist of the Future (Adelaide).

2006 (19) Purchased 2nd store with Mother Linda Landers. Won 3 heats for Interflora Florist of the Year, Winner WA Interflora Junior Florist of the Year, Winner of WA Interflora Florist of the Future, Runner Up Australian Interflora Florist of the Future (Daydream Island). Demonstrated for Interflora in Brisbane and Sydney. Bronze Medal National Worldskills Competition.

2007 (20) Won 3 heats for Interflora Florist of the Year, Winner WA Interflora Junior Florist of the Year, Winner of WA Interflora Florist of the Future, Winner Australian Interflora Florist of the Future (Alice Springs). Demonstrated for Interflora in Melbourne.

2008 (21) Won 3 heats for Interflora Florist of the Year, Winner WA Interflora Junior Florist of the Year, Runner up - WA Interflora Florist of the Future. 2009 (22) Won 3 heats for Interflora Florist of the Year + Invited to compete at Interflora Asia Cup Selection Trials, Melbourne (no place). October 2009 Linda and I sold our multi- shop business so that Linda could retire and I could pursue opportunities living overseas. Worked as Makeup Artist for Yves Saint Laurent for 4.5 months until I was due to move overseas. 2010 (23) Moved overseas to work in 5 Star Hotel as Florist in Residence. Then went to work in the USA for a period with Cirque du Soleil. 2011 (24) Mid 2011, came back to Perth for a short time and met my now husband. This kind of kept me in Perth. Decided I still didn’t want to work in Floristry and did several maternity/short term contract jobs for Brumby’s Bakery (State Manager), Swarovski (Area Manager) and Retail Apparel Group (Area Manager). 2012 (25) January 2012 decided to work as a Freelance Florist to get my hand back into it (getting itchy to do flowers again). July 2012 opened the “Matthew Landers” Brand. 2013 (26) got bigger. Expanded premises etc. 2014 (27) got even bigger.

Bronze at Melbourne International Flower’s Garden Show, Winner of Open Floral Design Competition at Perth Royal Show. 2015 (28) got really big + social media took over. Silver at Melbourne International Flowers Garden Show, Winner of Open Floral Design Competition at Perth Royal Show.

2016 (29) kept growing. Silver at Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, Bronze at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. 2017 (30) got REALLY big. Gold at Melbourne International Flower’s Garden Show, Bronze at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. 2018 (31) You know the drill. Gold at Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, Silver at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
