WELCOME FROM ARCH As I approached the end of my first full semester as the Interim Head of School at Fletcher, a single word lodged in my brain as I attempted to describe my experience to family members and long-time friends, including several heads and former heads of school: Gratitude.

Though circumstances may not have been ideal when I initially arrived at the School in late June, I felt an immediate wave of gratitude as person after person welcomed me to the School and sought to make my transition as smooth as possible. This included administrative colleagues and faculty and staff as well as parents. In fact, I have never worked at any other school in my career where I have received more supportive and affirming messages from current school families. I remember thinking to myself as early as Labor Day weekend, these are grateful people who make up The Fletcher School community.

My gratitude extends to our dedicated parents who support the Parents’ Council and who have gone out of their way to work with me and the members of my staff in support of our teachers, students, and our school families.

Our Board of Trustees is composed of some of the most talented and experienced leaders I’ve ever encountered in my career. They have supported me from the day I accepted their gracious offer to become the Interim Head of School. They have offered wise counsel when requested, but have otherwise trusted me and our leadership team to manage the day-to-day operations of the School.

And then, of course, there are our students. Bright, engaged, funny, sometimes quirky, they, too, have made me feel welcome from the beginning and have made me feel special just by showing up at their ball games and other school activities. One upper school student is currently working with me to design a Fletcher School flag, while another has partnered with me to identify ways to enhance the experience of our senior class members.

The people who work for The Fletcher School know their contributions are making a real difference in the lives of our students. Nobody just puts in hours around here. We take pride in our work and, unless a suggested change is going to benefit their students, our teachers are not interested. The work we do is transformational. We provide a service offered by no other school in Charlotte. And our parents know it and are genuinely appreciative.

When my wife noted earlier last fall that I consistently walked through our front door each evening with a smile on my face, she asked me why. Easy answer. I told her I just might have the best job of my career this school year. When asked what made the work so enjoyable, I responded that I had the privilege and honor each day of working with really good and really smart people who were grateful to be a part of this great enterprise we affectionately call The Fletcher School.

We want all those who have contributed this past year to The Fletcher School to know how deeply grateful we are for your ongoing support. Thank you!

My second grade teacher, Mrs. Skull, made learning exciting, and I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. My favorite thing to do growing up was to 'play school' every chance I got, even using my younger brother and stuffed animals as my students. As I grew older, I realized I loved being with children and teaching seemed like the perfect fit."

I love Rita Pierson's TED Talk where she voices that 'every student needs a champion,' and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to prove to students that I believe in them. When students know that I care about them not just as students, but as human beings, they begin to flourish academically and emotionally. I enjoy learning how each of my student's brain works and knowing just when and how to help that student learn and give them a loving push. I could talk to you for hours about why I love teaching especially at Fletcher!"

"JUST FOR FLETCHER" Connor and Madison Richardson grew up living happy and healthy with their parents, Meaghan and Cyril, on an island paradise. They had great friends, family, and access to some of the most visited beaches in the world. However, one thing was not right. At school, sometimes Connor and Madison struggled.

“You’re practically getting bullied,” exclaimed Connor Richardson. His words sounded all too familiar.

Connor is now a fifth grade student at The Fletcher School. He was speaking about his experience before his time at Fletcher. He and his sister, Madison, a second grade student, joined the School in August of 2021.

“They were making fun of me because of dyslexia.”

The Richardson family was at a crossroads in 2020. They were living in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and without a school option that supported Connor and Madison. Madison and Connor required additional support and their current school could not meet their needs. The family moved to Charlotte shortly thereafter.

“It was just for Fletcher,” Madison explained. After a long search online, flying up to visit campus, and going through the admissions process, her parents found Fletcher to be the perfect fit. The Richardson family picked up and moved to North Carolina to ensure Madison and Connor were in a supportive educational environment.

“Back in St. Thomas, teachers were pushing me more and they were telling me 'you have to do these things just because other students are going faster than you,'” Connor explained.

Thankfully, the bullying and pressure from teachers were infrequent and the Richardsons still love their St. Thomas community. However, the family needed something new.

When asked how Madison and Connor are doing at Fletcher, Division Head of Lower and Intermediate Schools, Ms. Trina O’Connor, commented, “They have immersed themselves into the social and academic culture at Fletcher. They are contributing participants to classroom discussions and activities, willing to share personal and academic stories to better the experiences of their classmates.”

Madison’s homeroom teacher, Ms. Jacqueline Peebles, told us, “Madison is doing great. She is thriving in the classroom. She loves learning and is constantly asking questions and expanding on her thoughts. She always contributes to class discussions.”

Connor’s homeroom teacher, Ms. Mary Lou Hudspeth, mentioned, “He has adapted to our fifth grade phenomenally. He is a very hard worker and one of the nicest students I have met.”

Madison and Connor also had a comment: “Students are really nice here. You’re not getting bullied. It’s more fun.”

The Richardsons are indeed making their mark on The Fletcher School and we’re thrilled they are here.

GRADUATE SUCCESS: PARKER LEVY CLASS OF 2013

Parker Levy is a Junior Partner at Colliers International and a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College. In 2013, Parker graduated from The Fletcher School. We interviewed Parker about his Fletcher experience.

Q: How did you find The Fletcher School?

A: I started tutoring at Fletcher with Ms. Anne Jordan in eighth grade. In hindsight, I should have come earlier. In that grade, they took the training wheels off, and my As and Bs turned into Cs and Ds. I started at Fletcher and it was a blessing. They taught me things I still use today.

Q: What are some of those things you are still using today?

A: Organization and preparation. There was one teacher, Ms. Debbie Holzberg, who really helped me in these areas. The outlines she incorporated are the same I used in college preparing for a test and the same I use in preparing for a client today. I get all my notes out and write out all my thoughts so they're not just stuck in my head. Also, in K-8, I was slow in Math. Fletcher really helped me on the math side in showing where the problems were going.

Q: How did The Fletcher School prepare you for life after high school?

A: It really gave me the attention I needed to learn. Fletcher holds you accountable for your work. By Senior year, however, they make you accountable for yourself. They teach you self-accountability and the teachers are there for you. But the point is they want to help you grow. When you're in college, professors are not going to hold your hand.

Q: Will you tell me about your fondest memories at The Fletcher School?

A: I really enjoyed the sports aspect. At Fletcher, everyone gets the opportunity to be on the team and play. I count myself really fortunate because I got to play soccer, basketball, and flag football. I played varsity basketball and would have never had that opportunity at most schools. But really the relationships made all the difference. I came in during middle school, and everyone was so welcoming.

Q: Do you have any advice for current Fletcher students?

A: What's most important is your education and setting you up for your future and college. Put in the hard work.

MAKING HIS MARK: THE HISTORY OF ROBERT JOLLEY AT THE FLETCHER SCHOOL PFC Denver Thomas in Europe PFC Denver Thomas stormed the beaches of Normandy. His grandson, Mr. Robert Jolley, teaches history at The Fletcher School to middle and upper school students. When we asked our faculty why they teach, Mr. Jolley mentioned that his grandfather was the single greatest inspiration for his passion to teach.

“The last thing he ever said to me was, ‘how long have humans been using fire?’ and it was at this moment that I knew I should be a teacher because even at the end of his life, he knew that I had a passion for education.”

You may know the history of Normandy: over 150,000 Allied troops land on the French beach and win a literal uphill battle against more than 50,000 anchored Axis troops, staving off a potential Nazi reinforcement of the Eastern Front and changing the tide of the war. This legendary moral and strategic victory is known as D-Day. One can see where Mr. Jolley’s passion for history comes from. Robert Jolley grew up in Fairview, North Carolina, attending AC Reynolds High School, before heading to UNCC for undergraduate and graduate school, where he earned degrees in history. Robert joined the Fletcher staff in 2014 after completing his graduate school program.

“Reading was our big family activity and history was the thing I always loved, and knowing that my grandfather fought in WWII made me feel special. I felt connected to the history I was passionate about.”

After D-Day, PFC Denver Thomas continued to serve the Army in various capacities. He later drove tanks as a part of the 749th Tank Battalion and prior to D-Day chauffeured the Regional Commander in England as a part of his supplemental duties. According to Mr. Jolley, he had many stories to tell.

“When I was in fourth grade we went to his last reunion (of the 749th Tank Battalion) at Fort Knox. That was really cool. We got the red-carpet treatment at the military base. I really felt connected to my family’s past and my own history.”

When asked about what bigger lessons we should learn from WWII after all the time Mr. Jolley has spent studying the war, Mr. Jolley responded: “There’s a lot of lessons to be learned and a bigger picture: we forget the Holocaust and human rights issues. Hate of any kind brings hate. These lessons are important to teach to students.”

Mr. Jolley’s passion to see the next generation gain a lifelong love for learning is what makes him a great teacher.

“I want my students to bring their passions to their communities. I know that most students won't be history majors. But, I want them to have a passion for learning and helping, because that is how we all succeed. That is what I want my students to leave Fletcher with.”

We are thankful that Mr. Jolley shared this wonderful story with us about his connection to history and why he became a Fletcher School teacher.
