Sorting fact from fiction With our recent appointment as the Icom authorised agent in the Top of the South we have received interesting feedback from various sources, so feel it’s appropriate to bust a few myths that have been circulating.

It may seem an unusual topic for a fishing publication, but many of our readers work in industries where land mobile radios are an essential communication tool.

Icom radios are Japanese made and these guys are very particular about their manufacturing process, which means the radios are built for conditions us Kiwis live and breathe; military spec, great waterproofing, and amazing five-yearwarranty!

Icom are technology leaders - not sheep that follow the flock. Some clients were told their Icom radios needed to be replaced when the national frequencies changed from wide to narrow band but, the reality is, Icom have been producing narrow band frequency radios for 15 years - the others have just caught up.

Icom have gone a step further and created superior internal processing that allows radios to operate on even narrower bandwidths, without any loss in voice or data performance.

When it comes to digital performance, all radios will talk to each other over voice but speak a very different language when it comes to transmitting data. Icom is one brand that can transmit data seamlessly with Kenwood, and both do this just as efficiently over the analogue network as they can over the digital network.

While many people have been talked into making expensive changes onto full digital systems, it may not be the best option for your business. Analogue is not about to be shuffled on any time soon, so don’t be duped by the hype and sales talk. Some brands want

you to commit to a digital system just so their data will work - a big price to pay when Icom radios will do the job on your existing network.

One client told us that that Icom radios were not performing on their site. Our bench test comparison told us a different story, so we just had to see for ourselves. With the company owner, we travelled over an hour to the site and carried out our own tests. There were corners and hills to conquer and when tested side by side with major competitor brands, we were able to clearly prove, as the client was listening, that Icom well and truly outperformed the others.

Mackenzie monsters & mishaps in the mix

W

inter fishing means one thing for me, freezing cold days spent on the hydro canals amongst the snow capped mountains of the Mackenzie district.

This winter was no different, with half a dozen trips providing great action and some nice eating fish for the freezer. Fish were caught on a variety of methods; softbaits, bait, glow bugs, and lures all producing fish.

The key is to adapt to the conditions and try different things. One particular weekend was very slow. On my way home I decided to have one last crack and tried a different method. I caught my limit of large fat salmon in 90 minutes.

This winter I also hooked the biggest fish I've encountered in the canals. Within seconds it was 100m downstream and way over the other side of the canal. I got one look at it and it looked to be a brown in the 30lb range. Unfortunately, after a long battle it managed to snap my leader - frustrating and disappointing but a part of the challenge of canal fishing. My biggest fish for the winter came in at 22lb.

I also managed to get some friends onto their first

big fish, which is more satisfying than catching them myself these days.

A low point was watching my mates rod go flying into the canal with a large trout connected to the other end, never to be seen again! Lessons were learnt from that!

My best day produced approximately 20 salmon up to 8lb and 3 rainbows 10lb+. On my worst day I caught nothing. The canals can be like that!

Now the weather is warming up, my canal gear is put away and I turn my attention to the multitude of opportunities summer provides in Canterbury. In particular I'm looking forward to targeting the large trout of lake Ellesmere, wild salmon in our large braided rivers, and spending some long lazy days on the beach with my friends in the Canterbury Surfcasting Club. If you haven't joined already I highly recommend you do. I can guarantee your catch rates will go up and you'll meet some good friends along the way. Great way to get the whole family involved too. With a full moon on the cusp of a new surf casting season, James McMullan and I set up our gear on Conway Beach, kindled a fire for ambience and to fight the spring chill, and baited our rigs.

Talk was full of anticipation of what the session might bring and expectation was high, given the good omens of no wind and a clear night ahead.

Aware that success in fishing can be a combination of good gear, skill, preparation, and a little luck, I’d left nothing to chance. I was fishing a Penn Powerstick 16ft rod with Penn Spinfisher 850ssm, stringed with Sufix 832 Hi-Vis green braid in 30lb. For a leader I favour Black Magic 80lb fluorocarbon. I run a single hook ledger rig with 6 oz breakaway sinker, but it’s the bait I pay most attention to because that is the critical link between the line and the fish!

So, at low tide that morning I enlisted the help of fresh bait specialist and professional pipi hunter, Jamie Tuuta, and scoured Pines Beach for fresh shellfish - a primo bait. Jamie is my six-year-old son and the real reason he was so keen to come pipi hunting was so he could get his name in The Fishing Paper. The kid has taste!

Rigging the bait is a bit of an art as well: on this occasion I impaled four pipis with some shell still attached to a long shank 8/0 hook. Then I secured them using Black Magic bait elastic. They are a soft bait and without the elastic they don’t stay on the hook for long.

Fishermen and hunters call dusk ‘The Witching Hour’ - that period when day bleeds out to full dark. For some reason, fish can become quite active through this time phase; if there are fish present, that’s when you’ll get a bite if you are going to. The breeze had just picked up to a very light southerly, the tide had just turned from high to receding, and as the sun slipped behind the distant hill, my rod buckled over. Line peeled off as the fish made a huge run, but it quietened down once I set the hook and leaned into it, coming in quite freely. Until it hit the breakers. Another flurry, line stripping, head shakes, and a bit of bucking to the rod. Then it was all over and I grinned when I saw what was at my feet. The surfcasting boys will be happy - the elephants have arrived!

After a year of waiting for the annual fishing trip to d'Urville Island, the three of us left Christchurch to meet a mate who had an old launch at Waikawa Marina, and by 2.30pm, were heading out the sound.

We set off at a cracking pace of 7 knots and maintained it the whole way. Lucky the sea was flat! However, we only managed to get as far as Alligator Head before darkness overcame us, so we sought shelter for the night.

Just on daylight, we nosed towards Stephens Passage, with a bit of a hangover (long trip), and arrived in about four hours only to find it was like Colombo Street, with so many boats vying for fishing territory.

We managed to find a spot, the boys dropped a few ledger rigs, and I did a bit of jigging, to no avail. The boys did manage to boat a few cod before the tide picked

up, forcing us to move off to fish the west side of the island, where we managed to pick up some good size tarakihi. Then into Port Hardy for the night.

The next day we were up and off early, and soon came across kawahai feeding on whitebait. We threw out a few lures and got ourselves some good bait for the day .

We then headed to the same tarakihi spot and first drop I hooked into a 5kg snapper, which fought like no tomorrow.

The next drop was even better, with about a 7kg snapper putting up a similar scrap.

Unfortunately, the flurry was brief and it was rats and mice for the rest of the day: a couple of gurnard and a few cod .

We then set off to Greville Harbour for the night, before battling northerly wind and waves doing 7 knots on the homeward leg - never been in a boat before where the waves were going faster than the boat.

One Monday in early September my mate Vern and I wandered down to the Taieri River near Dunedin to cast about for a trout. Our first stop was the Silverstream Mouth, but we had no joy there so we walked downstream to a section of the river called Murray’s Gate. In previous years I’ve caught and hooked some very big fish up to 5kg out of this hole and, funnily enough, one was holding in there.

I cast my Berkley Gulp 3” Banana Prawn soft plastic on a 1/16th Berkley Bream Pro jighead into the pool and, BANG, I was on! Little that I knew that this fish was BIG! In moments like these it pays to be fishing good gear and

FIELDTEST: SHIMANO STRADIC CI4 Jake Williams

The Shimano Stradic is one of the most popular fresh and saltwater spinning reels in New Zealand waters. Having fished with the CI4 range since not long after its release in this country, I am no stranger to the super lightweight CI4 technology and special features, like Aero Wrap II and S ARB bearings. Recently I have been fishing with the new Stradic CI4 HG 1000 and 2500 sizes, and there is no comparison.

The Stradic CI4 is the absolute ultimate in high performance, affordable, quality gear.

Like many Canterbury fishermen, I enjoy spin fishing and softbaiting for trout, which is where the Stradics two-speed oscillation system, known as Aero Wrap II, comes in handy. It lays the line onto the spool in a criss-cross pattern, which in turn creates less line on line friction, resulting in longer casts, especially with lighter weights; perfect for light jig heads.

Also, being an angler with no real preference over fresh or salt water, my Stradic 2500s have proved perfect for everything from spin fishing and softbaiting high country lakes and the canals, as well as spinning for kahawai at river mouths - super fun light tackle kahawai reel - and even softbaiting for blue cod in deep water, or off the rocks for blue moki.

As long as Shimano continues this range of awesome spin reels, I will continue to match them with my trout, salmon, and saltwater spin rods.

Although the boom and bust years are consigned to history and the New Zealand rock lobster industry has been rebuilt through careful management, controls, and animal husbandry, the health of this resource is not yet future-proof. The multilayered shared fishery is not without its problems and, with rock lobster the centre of attention, there are many spokes to this intriguing wheel. Daryl Crimp chatted with Industry, did some crystal ball gazing, and wonders is it a case of…

Lobster to the grindstone?

N

ew Zealand operates a shared fishery and CRAMAC 5 fully acknowledge it’s right to extract from a natural resource for commercial gain; a right and asset put in place in 1990. With this comes the responsibility of protecting that asset by investing in research, collecting & processing data, maximising the commercial value of lobster, creating greater efficiencies and, ultimately, managing high levels of abundance. This high abundance then benefits all users.

Paradoxically, a higher abundance, when coupled with other factors such as population growth, has created a greater take. Ironically, the Total Allowable Commercial Catch limit (TACC) has remained constant since 1999 - 17 years - yet commercial has noticed a gradual decline in abundance over the past six years.The lobstermen have tried to mitigate this decline by managing their Annual Catch Entitlement (ACE): basically by moving pressure away from stressed areas, to fishing more productive grounds. This doesn’t appear to be working, so other influences are clearly at play.

Looking into the crystal ball, commercial fear the next step in trying to maintain abundance will be a cut in TACC, but placing the responsibility on one sector alone, like putting all the pressure on one spoke in the wheel, is unlikely to be the answer. Ramifications from TACC cuts will not just hurt the lobstermen through lost assets, but cut millions of dollars in income to coastal communities.

Neither is it likely to significantly arrest the decline: management of the recreational share of the pie is by politics not by the resource, so balancing the ledger is done with the pen rather than with science-based data and reliable catch information. It is unequivocal that population growth and increased recreational effort is a factor in increased take, but the dynamics are complex and, for example, may well be compounded by a lack of knowledge and understanding in the effects of increased immigration and tourism.

THE RACE FOR SPACE Then there’s the question of spatial access: those who ‘utilise’ marine resources compete against those who wish to shut up large areas, particularly ones of high use - look but don’t touch. There is no argument about protecting areas that need it from utilisation, but industry argues that to do so without sound reason can create greater problems. For example, displaced or transferred effort can result in localised stock depletion, so what is gained in one hand is lost to the other. Coastal Plans, Marine Reserves, Marine Fishing Parks, and Customary Tools all need careful consideration before being adopted, and any loss from harvesting must be balanced across all extractive users.

NATURE’S CARD GAME RIGGED Not all influences are manmade; nature has a card in the game and is adept at sleight-of-hand. In the case of the Hector Dolphin Set Net Ban north of the Clarence

River, it was unforeseen that it would have a negative impact on lobster, yet a key predator of lobster, rig, have flourished in the absence of a commercial take and the population explosion is said to be having a telling effect on lobster numbers. Rig caught from the beach through spring and summer all have bellies full of lobster and, while some may argue it’s just nature at work, rig are competing in a fishery we all legitimately take from.

While it’s a veritable boon for surfcasters - one man’s fish is another’s poison - Industry argues that the problem needs to be addressed. But by whom: commercial or the NGO and Govt agency that installed the ban? What makes it a more bitter pill, say Industry, is the real truth has exposed that there are many times more dolphins along our coast than Professors L Slooten and P Dawson claimed.

HOT POTATO & LOBSTER DRESSING Call it a hot potato, a hoary chestnut, or the elephant in the room, but it is an issue people seem reluctant to tackle head on: that fishing charter operators are taking lobster for punters under the umbrella of recreational bag limits. Industry argues that it’s not a beat-up on charter operators per se but an issue MPI needs to seriously look into. Some level of control or management is required, soon, otherwise it will escalate out of hand: it is not just a case of a few rec fishers snaffling a deserved feed while paying for a charter, but far more complex. It connects back to the issue of the dynamics of population growth and increased take we looked at earlier, and other factors such as how a significant tourist take now affects the equation. Given projected tourist numbers, it’s likely to escalate.

There is also the issue of the number of charter operators: how many is too many, should the number be capped, should there be restrictions on take, and who is responsible to make these decisions. MPI said they had a plan and they did - what happened to it?

Some operators promote good practice but reports suggest others are simply disgraceful, which suggests intervention and not self management is required.

COMPLIANCE CRA 5 is fortunate to have a strong, dedicated MPI compliance force, although numbers are light on the ground. The real weakness is in the deterrent; infringement notices are light compared to other countries and court fines or sentences are often disproportionate to the weight of the offence of theft of a public resource. Commercial operators have huge

penalties imposed for offences, and rightly so, but disparity in punishments is not helping in managing the shared resource. Industry is calling for fines equal to the offence; increased penalties and forfeiture to a level that deters offending.

They also argue that MPI lacks enough staff with historical fisheries knowledge, the Fisheries Act, and field experience, which has resulted in a ‘bureaucracy down’ management structure that is not working. Any constructive abundance management in the lobster resource, they say, has come from commercial. It must change.

What is clear is that CRAMAC 5 has found itself at the crossroads and is unsure as to how they can further contribute to managing lobster abundance. Perhaps it’s time all users of the resource put shoulders to the grindstone on this one!

The rough weather didn’t deter us; our 30’ alloy launch, Mary-Rose, made light work of the choppy seas as we nudged up the east side of d’Urville Island. It was a mates’ trip away and we’d ensconced ourselves into the cosy surrounds of Wilderness Resort in Catherine Cove for the weekend, but now it was time to fish. A net maker by profession, I enjoy mixing business with pleasure and had a foot in two camps on this trip, intending to fish with the rod while one of my heavy-duty nets worked on our behalf in the background.

The intention was to target species not typically caught by line fishermen, so I’d brought along a 60m butterfish net. However, the rough seas pre-empted setting the net in as close as I’d have preferred so we strung it wide and mooched off for a fish. I also build and sell robust set lines, and during a quiet moment had developed some single hook crimped ledger rigs using Japanese longline hooks, so was keen to see how they fished.

We set up a drift, fishing the outside of a submerged rock that rose up to 50’. It dropped away quickly, so you really needed to keep in touch with your gear. The stiff wind meant we were drifting quite quickly too. I was using fresh bait and an Okuma rod and reel set up and the response was immediate; solid tugs and then the rod loaded up. Big cod - really big - 525mm, so you didn’t need many for a feed. Then something weird hit.

It didn’t feel like a blue cod and fought like nothing I’d ever played before. Keen to see

what it was, I played it carefully in the sloppy conditions and got the surprise of my life when it surfaced: a nice plump JD had fallen victim to a lump of meat. I was delighted.

With a good feed in the bin, we moseyed over to retrieve the net. Set nets are a lot of fun when set correctly and there is always anticipation of what you are going to catch. I wasn’t surprised when no butterfish came in - we just couldn’t safely get in close enough - but we were thrilled with the good sized moki that lay flapping on the deck. Sometimes it is quite satisfying to be able to add a little variety to the menu.

In August I underwent my initiation into the world of hosted international travel by taking three back-to-back groups to Niue Island. While the destination is stunning, unique, and a step back in time, the group dynamics - or was it the dynamic groups? - made it extra special!

Then there was the unexpected: people soon learned that Crimpy’s Niue was not like conventional PC hosted tours and the gullible had to have their wits about, as a surprise lurked around many a corner.

Of course you shouldn’t give it unless you can take it, and one group paid me back sublimely for one of my pranks. While we were parked in the jungle and I mean - ‘in

We had a blast; it was a rollercoaster of fun, and we all should have returned with ‘six-packs’, the belly-laughter hurt that much.

There was never a dull moment, the activities including: golf, weaving, snorkelling, swimming with whales, fishing, diving, drinking, crab hunting, outrigger canoe experience, gate-crashing a local’s house for lunch, market days, and plenty more.

A highlight of the trip was drinks with the NZ High Commissioner, which really was a unique opportunity only made available to Crimpy’s Niue. Another highly rated event was ‘Crimpy Cooks the Catch’, where I commandeered the Scenic Matavai Resort kitchen and cooked a feast for my guests; it was voted best meal of the trip by many.

They summed it up beautifully on the final night with a hilarious ‘dance’ in my honour.

Landmark Snapper Decision Geoff Rowling - President Our Fishing Future

Minister of Primary Industries, Hon Nathan Guy, has made a landmark decision with his recent announcements for the management and allowances in the Top of the South (SNA7) fishery.

Accepting evidence stocks are improving, he has increased the overall tonnage of snapper allowed taken by all sectors, from 306 to 545 tonnes annually. Although it has taken some 30 years of pain and restraint to get the rebuild settled in, recent years have seen all sectors finding snapper much easier to catch and it is good to see this being recognised.

A key part of the Minister’s decision has been the balancing of the allocations between the recreational and commercial sectors. Recognition of the importance of inshore species to public fishers and the reduced availability they have had to endure in recent times, is important to us. He also increased the commercial allowance, honouring earlier commitments to restore quota to those who did not receive compensation at the time.

This more equitable and fair balancing of the rights and responsibilities around the management discussion table opens the

door to a new era in New Zealand fisheries management. No longer should sectors moan and grumble about each other but, rather, we can now work collaboratively to explore ways to grow respective shares. Our Fishing Future believe the snapper fishing in the Top of The South has a positive future for all sectors if we embrace the opportunity for increased stewardship now in front of us.

The Minister has indicated an interest in seeing the fishing sectors work together in an ongoing manner. Leaders within customary, recreational and commercial sectors have an obligation to step up. Our Fishing Future see real potential for snapper to be restored as an iconic Top of the South sport and table fish and, while some will enjoy catching it while many others will rely on it to be caught commercially, our region will be better off socially, culturally and economically for it.

A recent article in the Marlborough Express titled ‘Night Hunting Worries Residents’ failed to do justice to the problem. It seemed more concerned with the safety around farm houses.

Fair enough, but that’s just one aspect. By law, it’s illegal and highly punishable, with a maximum $100,000 fine and/or up to a year's imprisonment. It is also illegal to spotlight on public land administered by the Department of Conservation.

While ‘public land’ valleys like the Leatham and Goulter have been plagued by spotlighters, and the Department of Conservation, over the years, has turned a blind eye to it, hopefully things are changing and DoC intends to police it. Similarly, in the Marlborough Sounds idiots spotlight from boats.

The plain facts are: 1. It’s illegal to have a loaded firearm in a vehicle or boat.

2. It’s illegal to discharge a firearm in a public place, i.e. public road.

It’s hoped judges will whack in heavy fines on offenders.

Poor water quality blinds eye Dear Ed, New Zealand has a crisis with its water resource, as shown with Havelock North and Pahiatua water supply contamination. Sadly, recent government comments shows a lack of will to address the serious situation. Prime Minister John Key recently claimed on television, commenting on Havelock North’s water contamination, that New Zealand was still a “100 percent pure”. A few days later, Minister for the Environment Nick Smith, in an environment speech at Lincoln University, said a target of making all rivers swimmable, was ‘impractical’.

Rivers must at the least be swimmable and preferably better than that, with a healthy ecology based on aquatic invertebrate life.

The Council of Outdoor Recreation Associations (CORANZ) considers both responses a

dangerously complacent attitude. Uncontaminated water is vital to the health of people. It is vital to the ecology and environment, and for the public to enjoy for recreation. Politicians cannot afford to be cavalier about its well-being.

Dairying expansion for corporates in low rainfall areas was putting stress on aquifers, depleting river flow, and, with less water flowing, raising contamination levels. But it’s not just farming. In the Havelock North contamination case, two rural towns in Waipawa and Waipukurau had, for decades, been pouring sewage into the Waipawa and Tukituki Rivers.

Rivers and aquifers were of the same resource and depleting underground water resulted in lowered river levels.

It’s the duty of all New Zealanders town and country - and government - to tackle the aquifer water and river contamination with the utmost vigour and action, and not turn a blind eye.

The fledgling Canterbury Surfcasting Club - featured in last month’s Sinker to Smoker - held its inaugural club weekend at Kaikoura, late last month. With the start of the season, fishing was extremely slow and expectations low, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the dozen or so members battling the surf and the bravado on the beach.

A few dogfish, skate, and one octopus were caught for the morning ( told you it was slow ). Club president, Greg Terras, and I got smashed by large sevengillers, so there is promise yet.

After lunch people split into two groups and headed in other directions, with one group fishing south

while the other tried north. It was toss of the coin stuff because the southern fishers lucked out, while Greg, a couple of junior members, and I scratched together a few dogs and a red cod before the evening rain drove us in. Reports filtered in that some of the team, at another location, managed to catch a few nice rig.

After showing a fellow member how to fillet his rig and receiving a feed from it in return, we called it a day and headed home.

Cold gets us smoking Mark Roden

I don’t have to tell you it’s spring; I’ve noticed a growing excitement amongst the spearfishing fraternity and fishos in general.

The water has warmed up a little, although she can still be pretty cold topsides if a breeze kicks up - and it usually does.

We had a good day out a few weeks ago around Forsyth Island at the top of d’Urville.

Vis was a good - average for the area: about four metres. We tried a few points as we headed out of Pelorus, including Culdaff Point, but it wasn’t super fishy anywhere.

Effort rewarded us with a few moki for the smoker and the usual butterfish.

We carried on to Yellow Point; vis not so great but a nice school of moki was hanging about. Unfortunately, we already had a couple each so decided to drop off the edge after tarakihi. Gary dropped a berley bomb in about 18 metres, off the edge of the rock, and it attracted a huge variety of fish. After a few drops I decided that this might be a photo opportunity rather than a dinner opportunity - lots of fish but nothing worth taking.

Back on board a cool wind had kicked in and we were all feeling the cold so decided to call it a day.

All happy after a winter layoff and keen to get back in the water ASAP.

The moki was put to good use in Gary’s latest creation: a cold smoker on its first tryout.

Legend of rock, Eric Clapton, was seen out and about recently with another beauty in his arms and immediately set tongues wagging. Holidaying in Iceland in August, Clapton stunned onlookers by landing the biggest salmon of the summer, a 28lb 108cm monster.

Fishing the famous Vatnsdalsá River, Clapton hooked the fish but was then put to the test by the behemoth as it powered away, using the current as an ally. Eric has kept fit touring so the 71-year-old rocker took the fight to the fish and a real ‘jam session’ followed, with the salmon playing the riffles and rapids while Claption played ‘side-strain’ on the mono. On lookers said Clapton appeared to nickname the salmon ‘Sally’, as the was repeatedly telling it to lay down throughout the fight.

Ultimately, the salmon claimed silver, as Eric’s star performance won out and saw him beach the big fish an hour later.

Clapton said later, “Before you accuse me of

being lucky, I did have to run a kilometre to tire this beast!”

Onlookers said Clapton was beaming and looked happy, with one resident angler overheard to say sarcastically to the aging rocker, “Well, don’t You look wonderful tonight!”

Clapton quipped back, “Yeah, but wait until After Midnight!”

Eric Clapton, the UK musician dubbed the best guitarist in the world is rumoured to have been spending less time on the strings lately and more ‘flinging the fly’ and, while he appears happy, footloose, and fancy free, sources close to the mega star have revealed exclusively to The Fishing Paper & Hunting News, that all is not well at home between Eric and his guitar.

Turning bronze to gold Brian Fensom

It was a shit forecast but we went anyway. Leaving Nelson with Troy Dando, Gavin Williams, and Paul Maskell, the intention was to go to Delaware Bay - some fishing was better than no fishing - but the weather kept improving so we kept gunning it. Pretty soon the head of d’Urville was on our shoulder and, with wind from the sou’east and the Maori Calendar looking grumpy, we set up for a drift fish with equal measures of hope and enthusiasm.

We were fishing our normal marks in 60 80m so it was working familiar territory but it's never a given that you score.

Sometimes the fish show up on the sounder and sometimes they don’t, so we fished a mix of blind and targeted

rod, fishing jitterbugs just big enough to get down: 100g plus.

As expected, the fishing was hard with no solid bite time, despite good sign. We picked up fish randomly and a bit of a liquorice allsorts at that. I’d drop the ‘bug until it hit the bottom and then commence a slow retrieve through about 10m of the water column; really just trying to guesstimate where the fish were holding. The light tip of the Trinidad did most of the work, imparting a nice action to the lure, which I’d flavour-up a bit with the odd wrist roll. Well it must have been a nice action, because things suddenly went solid and I was in for a good battle royal with a respectable snapper; big gutsy head-shakes, line peels, and a ‘bit of biff’ being telegraphed up the string. It’s what we hang out for through the week and one explosive round with a big bronze snapper is like striking gold.

There is much chatter and rumour about Nelson City Council’s alleged plans to limit access or close the boat ramp at Delaware Bay, a crucial safe launch site for families and small boats. It is the only safe boat ramp north of Nelson and provides sheltered access to Delaware Bay for boats, kayakers, and other users. The area is also an important food gathering site.

A recent STUFF article reported, ‘Nelson City Council has assured recreational boat users that their access to the Maori Pa Rd boat ramp at Delaware Bay, north of Nelson will not be restricted.’

Council are reviewing access to Delaware and have contracted consultant Peter Lawless who said, “My brief is to engage with fishers and advise Nelson City Council on how to best proceed in resolving issues associated with boat access in Delaware Inlet. They have asked me to connect with fishers

A meeting has been held but it was not publicised and there were no assurances given that the ramp wouldn’t be closed.

Council’s Clare Barton said, at this stage, it was an information gathering exercise and Council wanted to hear from boaties who use Delaware to find out the significance, value, and importance of it to them.

This issue is of critical importance and has potential ramifications for the whole country. I will dedicate more space to explaining the situation in more depth.

In the meantime I strongly urge interested boaties and users to email Clare and CC Peter Lawless into why Delaware access should be protected.

Communicating en masse Marty Bowers - Senior Fisheries Analyst -Recreational Fishing Team

The MPI recreational fishing team was formed in 2015 to ensure that recreational fishers were more included in local fisheries management decisions. The team became fully functional from November 2015.

The aim of the team is to find ways to make fisheries information more accessible to anybody who wants it, and to simplify the engagement process so as to include as many fishers as possible. This is outlined in the Recreational Fishing

Initiative that was released publicly in February. You can view the initiative on the MPI website.

As part of our engagement strategy we have visited a number of fishing competitions and marine shows over the past 10 months to talk to recreational fishers face to face. These include the Tauranga Marine Show, the Placemakers 90 Mile Beach Snapper Bonanza, the Beach and Boat Fishing Competition, the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show and National Fieldays

at Mystery Creek. From this, it has become apparent that many fishers feel information is hard to come by, and not necessarily presented in a user friendly format. It is also clear that engag ing with MPI and the process of getting individual opinions and submissions in can be daunting, and is preventing MPI from considering some valid input into management decisions.

While we work with established organisations, we also recognise that of the 600,000 recreational fishers in New Zealand, these organisations have less than 10 percent of that number as membership. So how do we also communicate with the other 90 percent of recreational fishers out there who may feel that there are barriers to them having their say, or that engaging in these processes is too daunting?

We know that majority of people prefer to hear about rule changes and updates via email and about half thought that receiving these updates through the NZ Fishing rules app was a good idea as well.

In response, we have set up a mailing list anyone can sign up to and receive information on fishing related issues for their local area, or for the whole country. We have a number of clubs and national organisations signed up and we expect they would pass this information onto their members. These messages haven’t always been passed on to individual members or affiliates, so we encourage you to you sign up to the mailing list by email recfishingteam@mpi.govt.nz and ensuring that you receive all information that we send out.

In the social media arena, MPI Fisheries Compliance currently runs four regional Facebook pages for Otago/Southland, Canterbury/Westland, Nelson/Marlborough and Northland.

While the focus of these pages is on compliance, they are also used to advertise consultations and drop-in centres when we are looking at making fisheries management changes. We also have an MPI wide Facebook page and Twitter account that is used to help get messages out there.

While all this technology is a really useful tool, we also recognise that not everyone who goes fishing recreationally wants to receive information this way. We still advertise drop-in centres in local newspapers and provide hard copies of fishing rules and other information. We also publish monthly articles in the New Zealand Fishing News and the Fishing Paper and Hunting News, which allows us to discuss topics in greater detail.

The third main goal of the recreational fishing team is to look at how we manage fisheries that are important to recreational fishers. MPI must follow the 1996 Fisheries Act when setting catch allowances for fisheries and we also recognise that most inshore fisheries have shared interest between the customary, recreational, and commercial sectors.

This shared fishery model has been used most recently with the Marlborough Sounds Blue Cod Management Group, the SNA 7 Management Group, and the SNA 1 Strategy Group, where people from all sectors have got together to develop fisheries plans and options for fisheries management. Attached to this has been the increased use of drop-in sessions where members of the public can come and talk to experts about their ideas and concerns, and this information is then utilised when providing advice to the Minister when changes to fisheries management controls are being made.

In addition, we expect to see more local area initiatives in the future where locals and fisheries users get together to develop management options. We want to see local fishers take more ownership of the fisheries in their area and we may be able to provide the tools to achieve this.

The main point of this whole approach is that MPI wants to ensure that you have every opportunity to have your say. We want to work with you and keep managing shared, sustainable fisheries for the future.

Boneless Trout Fillets “Looks like you took those fillets off with a hammer,” was my cheeky reply to John Fanselows’ Facebook photo of his trout fillets and it wasn’t well received.

His response was sharp and immediate. “Ok Hadland, show us how it’s done.”

I was thanked by a whole bunch of Facebook followers for posting the tongue-in-cheek video response.

Obviously John wasn’t the only one struggling with the knife work on trout.

1. Cut from the shoulder down past the pectoral fin without cutting the spine. With the knife on the 45 degree angle to the fish, cut along the spine from the shoulder to the tail. It will cut the rib bones off as you go. The tip of the knife should be following the centre line of the fish and cut just above the dorsal fin base.

Trout have a reputation for being difficult to fillet. Trout probably have twice the number of small bones than their sea dwelling cousins and their soft flesh means they take some mastering. Like everything, a bit of knowhow helps.

Removal of the gut and gills and having the trout well chilled makes this job easier. If I’m going to smoke it, I usually store it in the fridge overnight uncovered, which dehydrates it slightly making firmer to handle. A sharp, flexible, long bladed knife is essential too.

2. Lie the fillet skin side down on the board.

Slip the knife under the rib cage and cut along and upwards towards the bones and lift off the rib cage bones.

3. Use a finger to find the small lateral bones in the flesh. Starting on the top side of those bones, use the knife to follow the edges of them, cutting all the way to the skin. Cut down the other side of the bones and cut away off the skin.

4. Do the same with the other side and your boneless fillets are ready for the smoker or pan. If you need to remove the skin, hold the skin down at the tail end and run the knife flat along the skin to remove the flesh from it.

Lagarosiphon is an introduced ornamental freshwater plant and has become a serious out of control pest in lakes and ponds around New Zealand, particularly in Lake Dunstan.

It is estimated 200 hectares of the lake are seriously affected by the weed and the use of sprays such as Diquat as measures of control have been trialled but they proved not very effective.

Concerned with the situation, the Central Otago town of Cromwell formed Guardians of Lake Dunstan, an action group which created a charitable trust to assist in fund raising for research, eradication and control. One current recommendation is for an excavator fitted with a weed rake and a reach of 17 metres to operate from the shore where the weed is thickest. The accumulated weed safely disposed of via commercial composting but mechanical harvesting would be a holding measure at best.

Lagarosiphon is a native of Southern Africa, where it isn’t a major problem due to naturally occurring biological controls, such as weed-grazing fish. To import foreign species to tackle New Zealand’s problems would almost certainly bring with it a lot of undesirable environmental baggage.

Of the southern lakes, Lake Dunstan has a very high recreational use rate and an excellent record as a top trout fishing location but the places I have fished successfully in the past are now disappearing under extremely thick mats of weed. However, shore-based anglers need not be alarmed. There are still many fly or spinning possies available, while boaties trolling or fly fishing the weed edges from their craft have a definite advantage.

During 2015 a management group was formed titled the, ‘Lake Dunstan Aquatic Weed Management Group’. It consists of 10 interested parties:- NIWA, LINZ, Otago Regional Council, Otago District Council, Contact Energy, Fish & Game, Ngai Tahu, Clutha Fisheries Trust, Cromwell & District Promotions Trust and of course, the Guardians.

With that corporate horsepower available, it is hoped successful strategies can be formulated and Lake Dunstan returned to something of its former glory. However, I doubt anyone would be holding their breath!

Adrian’s texts are usually brief and this one was no different.

‘Sprngtahrtrp?’

‘Yep,’ I replied without hesitation. Our last trip to the headwaters of the Ahuriri had landed Adrian his first tahr and, at 13 inches, was a top first-up bull.

A fortnight later, after gaining the necessary leave passes from home and work, we were putting a gear list together and sorting logistics. Adrian scoffed when I said I’d be taking a bow.

“I’ve shot enough tahr with a rifle so if one gets close enough to take with an arrow, I’ll have a crack,” I said, trying to sound convincing.

Adrian mumbled something about finishing off my rump-shot tahr with his 7mm. To be fair, his doubting was justified. I’d only recently bought the second-hand compound bow, having been caught in a weak moment by Grant at the hunting and fishing shop. The freezer was full of venison and I was looking for a new hunting challenge.

“Check this out,” he said, pulling the complex tangle of limbs, strings and cams from a box. “Got dropped off by a short fat South African chap who’s heading home, we reckon it would fit you perfectly.”

The sales staff chortled like hyenas, l while I responded with a simple middle finger gesture. Having never shot a compound bow before, I took it upstairs to their range and shot a respectable dinner plate sized group at 20m. I was sold on the potential and promptly bought it.

Mid-November saw us in the headwaters of the Ahuriri, scoffing a quick meal before heading off in different directions. Adrian had tried to talk me back into the rifle but by now I’d got the groups down from dinner plate to tennis ball size, so optimistically considered myself ready.

I was high on a shoulder when I spotted a bull tahr on the same face, 200m away. As often happens, more appeared and I was soon looking at eight mixed aged bulls. Better still, they were grazing

down towards me! Not wanting to get spotted by stalking them, I nervously hid and waited. I looked at Adrian on the shoulder opposite, waving his arms like a seagull, trying to get my attention.

Turns out he thought I hadn’t seen them and was nervous I’d stumble upon them. We both cursed forgetting the radios.

A stiff up valley breeze swept the tussocks and I was surprised it hadn’t ended the game earlier, but the tahr kept moving towards me. I had a couple of practice draws on the bow and noticed, as the excitement built, the draw weight seemed to get heavier. I poked my nose over the tussock. One of the bulls had peeled off and was grazing broadside only 30m uphill from me. It was now or never.

I drew back on the bow, cleared the tussock, lined up the centre

Even when the arrow was in flight, I was aware of my mistake. The arrow hit the bull at the back of the ribcage. I had not allowed for wind drift. The bull hunched,moved forward, and then stopped appearing unharmed. As a rifle hunter, that’s a bit off-putting. The rest of the group grazed over a brow and the bull joined them.

My legs were jelly, a feeling I’d not had since my early red Roar hunting days. Then I did something dumb: I panicked, thinking I had wounded it and needed to finish it off. Like an idiot, I climbed the brow and there was my prize sitting down, uncomfortably. Left for a moment or two longer, as is recommended, he would have died but instead staggered to his feet and was met with a second

A destination not to QUIVER about Advanced Archery has finally moved to a new home, 35 Normanby Road, which used to be home to Sportways Gun Shed. It’s a nice irony that a gun shop has made way for a bow shop but it certainly reflects the growth and popularity of the sport.

But the move has been 20 years in the making: since starting Advanced Archery in 1996 Carol & Kevin Watson have been visiting trade shows and archery shops in the U.S, storing up workshop and display ideas. the walls, a three tier arrow display showing all the options, and more. Ask the staff what excites most and they might just answer, “The arrow room!” It’s an OCD’s dream come true! A dedicated room to store the thousands of arrows kept in stock, all laid out on separate, labelled shelves.

boots. A few hours later we were at the crime scene and with surprising recall, worked out the angle of the last arrow shot, finding the blood covered broadhead buried in a tussock stump.

We traced the small dots of blood across the face and when it angled down towards the creek I felt more confident we might find a kill. Scuff marks down a bank led the eyes to the creek bed where my 11 inch bull lay in a watery grave.

I was rapt.

Handshakes completed, we set to work capturing a few photos, harvesting some meat, and salvaging the first arrow.

I returned to the sports shop and told the story of the bow’s maiden voyage.

“You jammy bastard,” was said repeatedly, along with suggestions that a new bow hunter should work their way up the species list.

“You lads better ring that fat South African and ask him if he has something more challenging over there I can tick off the list then!”

A lot of people claim to be excellent at judging distance and with frequent practice, especially over familiar ground, some can pull out ‘card tricks’! However, the advent of laser range finders has made liars out of many and I’ve highlighted the shortcomings of many mates on occasions with good humour you understand.

The reality is, many factors influence perception and, therefore, affect ‘guesstimates’: light, topography, weather, water, and angle of terrain can all distort information the brain receives.

During the seventies I went through a very bad period of shooting where I lost confidence to the point I was missing before I pulled the trigger. I hadn’t mysteriously transformed into a poor shot: I had transferred from hunting close-quartered scrub, bush, and clearings to vast alpine country. I simply couldn’t consistently and accurately estimate distances in the new environs so had no idea where my shots were going.

FUNCTIONALITY AND FORM Ergonomically, it's compact, light, and with the rubberised coating hatched pattern grip, fits the hand comfortably. It utilises two easy to locate rubber buttons: mode and function. The function button sits proud so is easy to locate by touch. One click turns in on, aim with the centre circle, and the second click activates the ‘target box’ and the distance appears above in less than a second - clean, crisp, and clear.

with focus rubberised wheel, and 6x magnification, which translates into a very crisp image with good field of view. This makes target alignment quick and intuitive. It is uncomplicated: read out in metres or yards, scan mode, and sport mode (I didn’t bother with this).

IN THE FIELD

It comes with a wrist strap and a belt pouch with a quick-fasten velcro/dome clip belt loop plus a simple aluminium clip. In all honesty, I wouldn’t trust this on my belt as both fasteners are not robust and the pouch potentially could be ripped off by scrub, or wear and tear over time. This is common to other brands I have tested too.

Where it counts, the Nikko Stirling Laser Range Finder 1200 is a little ripper. First up, it’s easy and intuitive to operate. The functions are crisp and quick. It operates well in a range of conditions and it is accurate; I tested it alongside two other reputable brands and the calibration of the Nikko was spot on and consistent.

It claims a reach of 1200m: I tested the long distance aspect on an overcast day and got to 1100m so don’t doubt it. What did surprise me, it performed exceptionally well in close, reading accurately into 5 yards! (A deal-breaker for bowhunters.)

I have since lost it and will probably never see it again; Daniel got his mitts on it, but what a great asset for a young hunter going forward.

After catching the bus home, I ran up the driveway and burst into the house bubbling with excitement. I was going goat hunting with my Bergara .222 rifle. I grabbed my blaze orange hunting top and slipped on my hunting boots, quickly tying the laces up. Dad was ready and waiting for me with his hunting knife tied to his hip and chaps on, as there is quite a bit of gorse growing up the back amongst the small pines.

We quickly walked out to the back following the old native logging track, when I spotted some goats grazing on the clover and rye grass in the paddock.

We stalked closer towards them, crouching down low and moving quietly forward. The smell of a billy goat drifted in the air! The goats stopped eating, knowing something was not right. Then some of the nannies started to walk towards their escape route into the bush.

Quickly we moved in closer to get a more humane shot and at 60 yards we stopped at a small manuka tree.

As I had the gun, Dad stayed behind me telling me to, “find a good rest.” I found a rest on the tree and positioned the crosshairs on the biggest billy goat, waiting for a clear shot.

The goat moved side on and Dad whispered to me, “Aim for the neck or shoulder for a clean kill!” He handed me

a bullet, which I loaded into the chamber. I pulled back the hammer and readied my finger on the trigger.

When the goat stopped moving his head, I gently squeezed the trigger sending the bullet through the air straight into his neck. I heard the thud and saw the billy drop dead instantly to the ground.

Dad was pleased I dispatched

the goat humanely. It was my fifth goat this year and I was really proud, as he had one of the biggest set of horns I have harvested so far!

I carried the billy home for dog food, with the help of Dad when it got too heavy. However, Mum was not pleased because she could smell me before I got in the door. She said I smelt like a bloody billy goat!

Bryce was proud but mum squealed loud!

It’s been a long day already, starting predawn with that familiar drive up roads, which become narrower and narrower.

Roads that start out tarred, smooth, and ‘two-laned', but eventually deteriorate to two vague wheel marks, pocked with pot holes, and randomly distributed with rockfall and frozen cattle turds.

Onwards through a dozen gates, the first of them padlocked, past huddled merinos and black cattle with frost on their backs.

Past red stags sparring and dainty fallow shifting nervously towards cover. Cracking the ice on the puddles and at the edge of the fords. It may be bitterly cold but I drive with the window down so I can see better - that clear glass would not impede my view if I wasn’t breathing all over it. I was probably dribbling too!

One last gate-latch closed then ditching gumboots for hikers, putting bolt and bullets in the Remington and lighting up tracking collars. Then I hunt for pigs with dogs and later I hunt for dogs with a pig.

Up and down like the proverbial yo-yo but the up and then the down is half a mile each way. Each up is a slog. Each down is laden with a warm lice-ridden pig carcass.

When the dogs are weary and their feet are worn, I tie them in the sun and feed them plenty. Time out and tummies full then a nap well-earned.

No nana-nap for me. These hunting opportunities come but rarely and I won’t waste this one. Time to break out the binoculars, to wind-up the varipower scope and to morph into a stalker.

Hours later and I'm almost beat. Almost.

Way up high amidst the boulders and bracken there is something out of place.

It’s sorta white but it moves different to a

goat. Watching, watching, binoculars fully stretched as is my imagination.

I reckon the white thing is a boar and considering all the black sows have piebald piglets at foot, I reckon maybe this boar is their poppa. To beat off the hordes of horny black boars hereabouts he must be an alpha male. Possibly, just possibly, the white boar 800 metres up that steep mountainside is a two hundred pounder. Me, I'm not knackered and footsore at all!

It’s no Olympic record I set for the 800m dash but this is no athletic oval I'm climbing. Olympians don’t have to be silent, nor counter an errant breeze, I do. A large rock breaks my silhouette as I creep the final few metres before I can see into the boar’s domain.

I see pigs. Here a black pig. There a black pig. Everywhere a pig-pig. None of them are white.

There are white goats. There are black goats. There are brown goats. There are black and white and brown tri-coloured goats. No white pig. Silly woman, I must have been mistaken.

I wait with binoculars pressed into my brow, just in case. I wait, watch, and selfdoubt for 10 minutes. Black pigs discuss the weather, they dig roots, they pluck native grasses.

Tick, tick, tick – time is up, I’m bored. I shoot a black pig. That’s when Whitey tears out of his hidey-hole, higher up the hill.

Wow, look at him go. Straight downhill, big panic-stricken lunges, tail straight out.

Thwack, a bullet strikes.

Now look at him go. End over end, big death lunges, and a rock slide to emphasise the steepness of the terrain. A scatter of goats and dust are a spectacular finale to Whitey’s life as he leaps and thrashes for 70 metres down the sheer face.

Whitey is no two hundred pounder, he’s a hundred pound off target. Still, I do feel a little smug after all that self-doubt. He is a white boar and that running shot wasn’t too bad either, especially considering I can’t recall the sequence involved before my rifle spoke. Visualisation and considered thinking never were my style, so it’s lucky the little Model 7 is very good at its job.

This delightful summer dish is one to savour and is perfect for an entrée or a main course.

• 4 squid tubes cut into rings • Chilli kelp seasoning • Canola oil • 16 spears asparagus, halved • 2 tbsp olive oil • 25g butter • Salt & pepper • Juice of one lemon • Grated zest of small lemon • 3-4 cloves garlic finely chopped Fry squid rings in a light layer of canola oil until cooked and just coloured.

Season heavily with chilli kelp while cooking. Remove to a warmer.

In a separate pan, heat oil and melt butter over moderate to hot heat. Add asparagus spears and season liberally with salt and cracked pepper. Add garlic, zest and lemon juice and cook for two or three minutes until crisp.

Arrange asparagus on a plate, top with squid rings and spoon a little residual sauce over each serve.

Before you go fishing can you bark the garden, fertilize the lawn and edge the garden.

Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, and Marlborough District Council Harbour Masters are joining forces for this summer to deliver Top of the South water safety initiatives and safety messages. Boat safety week, October 14-21, will see many activities involving different safety agencies.

Summer will see periods of zero tolerance during which, if you have infringed, you will receive an infringement fine. A joint initiative with Maritime New Zealand and their officers will see a greater number of enforcement officers on the water this summer.

What you can do to support yourself.

Big Angry Fish for Safer Boating October 14-21 Lindsay Sturt - NZ Safer Boating Forum Chairman

The popular TV3 fishing show, Big Angry Fish, has come on board as Safer Boating Week partners. You will see hosts, Milan and Nathan, in three safety videos about how to Prep, Check, Know. They will also be spreading the word on social media, in print ads, and in the news.

We are delighted to have them supporting safer boating and encouraging boaties to have fun and be safe.

Safer Boating Week is simple – get ready before you are on the water, and this year we have new resources to make it as easy as possible to: • Prep your boat • Check your gear • Know the rules Why are we doing that? Because the alternative, getting ready after you are on the water, is not a good one! That is when trouble starts.

For many boaties Labour Day weekend is the traditional start of recreational boating, so Safer Boating Week is always the week before. This year that is October 14-21.

The week will start with the traditional wharf jump in Wellington when a group from the Safer Boating Forum take the plunge into the harbour. This highlights possibly our most tragic statistic: two-thirds of recreational boating fatalities would have been avoided if people had been wearing their lifejackets.

This year some of the group will carry their lifejackets and not wear them. They will have to try to hang on to their lifejackets when they hit the water and then put them on in the swell; both of which are surprisingly hard to do. Our advice about lifejackets is always wear them on the water – it is part of getting ready before you go out.

We are also producing new Prep, Check, Know guide.

This provides a list of simple, effective safety checks boaties should make every time before they go on the water, and other information they might need.

This year some of the group will carry their lifejackets and not wear them!

Boaties who have VHF radios on their boat are reminded that maritime VHF radio channels are changing on October 1. Rest assured, distress channel 16 will not change, and you will not have to buy a new radio - but you will have to know the new channels. New radio handbooks and stickers are now available – order publications via the Maritime NZ website: www.maritimenz.govt.nz/subscribe/ Safer boating organisations and regional councils will be supporting Safer Boating Week in their areas. Watch out for them and take part. Some of the activities will include: workshops and training; boat ramp and on the water checks, including a “fuel for safety” promotion rewarding correct safety equipment; competitions; school, and boat and yacht club visits; media and other publicity; and lots more!

The Safer Boating Forum was established in 2000 to coordinate and implement recreational boating safety initiatives. It is made up of government agencies and local government, water safety and recreational boating organisations, and the marine industry. The Forum’s work is aimed at reducing boating injuries and fatalities and improving boat safety behaviour. Maritime NZ chairs the Forum and members include Coastguard, Jet Boating NZ, Kiwi Association of Sea Kayakers, local and central government, NZ Fishing News, NZ Jet Sports Boating Association, NZ Marine Industry Association, NZ Underwater Association, Surf Lifesaving NZ, Waka Ama NZ, Water Safety NZ, WaterSafe Auckland, White Water NZ, and Yachting NZ.

SCAVENGERS WERE CIRCLING The Australian Outback beyond the proverbial ‘black stump’ is a fascinating place for some, a place to be feared for others, boring and featureless for some, while wondrous and fascinating for the more curious and adventurous.

Home to the Aborigine for 60,000 years, they learnt how to live and thrive in the outback. Many still live there today, mostly in small scattered government communities, often in the ‘middle of nowhere,’ well off the roads that crisscross the region.

Today these roads provide links to large cattle properties, mining ventures and tourist access. It is not uncommon to drive all day and see only one or two other vehicles or one single diesel pump.

From time to time, unsettling stories come out of the outback. Readers may recall the Wolf Creek nightmare incident (now on DVD), or the death and disappearance of Peter Falconio (book titled ‘No Turning Back,’ by his partner Joanne Lees). Another unsettling incident occurred in 2006, on the remote Buntine Highway in the Northern Territory, when 36-year-old Ricky Megee was heading to Western Australia to start a new job. He detoured to visit a friend working in the outback.

his only option was to walk to seek help.

So began his barefoot walk for survival, his ultimate goal being to survive no matter what it took. Most of all it took water, which he frequently was without or had too much.

Then there was food, which he had none until he resorted to eating grasshoppers, ants, bugs, including flies and wasps, caterpillars, leeches, lizards, crabs and frogs.

They just kept him alive, although he lost 60kg in the process.

After 71 days adrift in the outback, two cattle station hands, Taz and Bruce from Birrindudu Station, found him while out patrolling in their Land Cruiser. He was in the furthest corner of the furthest paddock of a very large cattle station comprising thousands of hectares.

He had never been reported missing in all that time. Kayaks come in all shapes and sizes and while it may make choosing a kayak more of a challenge, it does mean that paddlers have the ability to choose a kayak that suits their needs. At Kayak HQ we have a number of customers who want a kayak for fly fishing.

There are very few fittings in front of the seating area, which minimises the likelihood of a line snagging.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t fit accessories to the kayak. There are track fittings in numerous locations into which you can fit rod holders, paddle holders, cameras and more.

Lastly, even the seat helps improve your fishing experience. The seat adjusts in height; use it low down when paddling or set it high when you are fishing. The high position makes the transition from sitting to standing easier too.

While the Ultimate has some features that make it great for fly fishing, the same features also limits the range of conditions that it is suited to. Being a sit-in design, the kayak does not self-bail like a SOT does.

Mary, Mary quite contrary

I was recently reading about a Massey University student’s study of a wild cat population, that live amongst kiwi on a Hauraki Gulf island. The student had the very unenviable task of collecting cat scat, 400 in total, from the island, and then studying the scat to determine what the cats had eaten. The study showed the island’s cats ate a lot of rats, small perching birds, and insects - along with kereru, magpies, and pukeko. One exception was, one cat had eaten eel, which took me back to when I was a youngster growing up on our family dairy farm out the back of Westport during the 1950's and early 60's.

With the farm, we inherited a long haired black cat named Mary. Mary was a fixture on the farm and lived life her way. She shared that life between the house, the farm buildings, and the natural environment. With a population of wild cats in the native bush around us, Mary also was a regular producer of litters of kittens. These kittens were born in scrub surrounding the house area but were never seen until they were about half grown.

With a swamp area cutting through the farm, it wasn't long before we realised Mary was a prodigious catcher of eels.

With a matted grass surface, we were able to walk across the swamp but had to be careful how we did this; one mistake and we’d fall through and find ourselves in trouble.

We always knew when Mary was fishing for eels... she would be sitting upright on solid land next to the swamp, staring intently into the clearest bit of water near her feet. Being kids, we didn't have the patience this cat had to actually see how

she caught these eels. The evidence of the hunt would be found later.

If our parents weren't home in the evening and we were all heading off to bed, their instructions were to check under the couch by the back door and make sure Mary was put outside before we hit the sack. One evening one of my brothers was checking under the couch when he reeled back and yelled out, “Snake - snake!”

As we don't have snakes in New Zealand, I went over to the couch to have a look myself. It wasn't a snake ... but quite a large eel that Mary had managed to sneak inside and deposit where she thought it mightn't be found for a while. The eel was thrown outside where Mary no doubt moved it to a better possie for eating.

What we were never able to understand was how Mary was able to work out how to chew an eel into the same number of pieces as she had kittens. She was a remarkable cat that learned to live with what Nature provided, yet we never ever saw her with a native bird. Rats and eels seemed to be her preference.

Baptiste spoke of the incident afterwards, saying the gesture was misinterpreted and that Nan was highly strung.

“Her shoes were grubby and I automatically spat on one to polish it - how else do they think I get the city’s telescopes so shiny?”

He is unrepentant and says if Nan expects him to come back and kiss her feet, she is delusional. His comments have outraged city officials, who plan to take the medal back.

Baptiste, an ardent canal fisher, says they have no show.

“I have already melted it down to make sinkers!”

Jean-Claude is philosophical about the uproar.

“A passing tourist gave me a copy of The Fishing Paper to cheer me up - it’s a much better read than Society News any day!”

He reckons most of the French are a Miserablé lot anyway.

THE LIFE OF RILEY The new season’s magic was almost here.

But I had a bit of mileage on my old licence, time owing at work and being a week day I knew I’d have the lake virtually to myself.

In preparation the new reel, a gift from broin-law (thanks again), had been spooled up with fresh backing and a new weight forward floating fly-line attached.

A quick stop was made at the office to tidy off a couple of small issues and to gloat about going fishing, where one of my envious colleagues inferred my parents had never married. Back out to the car-park where boat and vehicle had been left in full view for all to see and away we went. But one more stop was required.

My Osprey and Yamaha outboard is a wonderful unit but it doesn’t use much fuel.

We normally fizz onto the lake towards a favoured spot then quietly row for the rest of the day, only cranking the motor up again for the run back to the ramp. With the last few litres of fuel being past its use-by date, another stop was made to give it to a mechanical matey for cleaning purposes, have a good yarn, a quick re-fuel and get on the way once more.

A wonderful spring day developed sunshine, clear, flat water with great visibility into the depths, so perfect conditions for a floating stalk. Very light airs from just the right direction moved the boat along the shore line perfectly for several hundred metres but where were the fish?

Oddly enough the past two visits to these waters had also proved difficult and while the time spent on both occasions was not lengthy, there should’ve been more trout about.

The words of a former mentor came back to me “if you’re not seeing fish, move,” so the Osprey beak was pointed over to the other side and with just me on-board the distance was covered in short order.

The beautiful conditions persisted and as the boat drifted along the margins, a slight movement of water indicated there could be a fish just ahead. Out went a nymph and a trout headed at speed to parts unknown.

“That’s him gone,” I said to myself.

As I went to recast another fish rose to the fly. It took off into deeper water, round a sunken log and into the weed – hey it’s not always supposed to be easy! After a bit of manoeuvring and a good battle it was netted, photographed and released back to the watery depths.

Ah this is more like it, so where’s the next one?

Well there wasn’t one and for the second time in as many weeks only two fish were sighted and one taken. But who’s complaining? A mid-week expedition in brilliant conditions has to be good for you.

From Sinker to Smoker Ron Prestage

The last ten metres The surfcasting season is here and it is timely to prepare for landing a big fish.

When dealing with a large, fighting fish, consider the last ten metres of line to be the most important for you to get onto your reel spool. This is when caution must be at its peak. This is where the fish of a lifetime, maybe a prize winning fish, or the catch of the day, is usually lost.

If a big fish is hooked surfcasting, try to expend the fish’s energy out in the deep, beyond the surf-line. This is the time to adjust your reel drag as the bend in the rod and the stretch in the line is still forgiving. Once your drag is set to a level that allows the fish to run before pressure threatens the line, DO NOT tighten it up further as the fish gets closer and is apparently tired! If you must do any adjusting, slacken the drag off as the distance between you and the fish lessens.

Your reel, line and rod have been well maintained and they won’t let you down, will they?

BE PATIENT. The fish on your line could well be the fish of a lifetime. What is another 30 minutes playing it compared with the rest of your life?

Do not allow yourself to be put under pressure to land the fish. This can happen if a crowd gathers or some fellow fishers have had to take their gear out of the water to give

you room. Most fishers do not mind assisting you land a good fish and will help with the gaffing if necessary. As the last ten metres of line draws closer the fish is usually in the surf break or against the angle of a sloping beach. This is RED ALERT time. Even though you are tired and lacking oxygen to the brain, keep concentrating on what you are doing. One rash move, like trying to walk backwards up the beach towing the fish will prove fatal to you and a life preserver for the fish. Just because you are getting close to your shock leader, don’t think you can exert extra pressure at the death. Don’t get over confident with your shock leader.

Remember it is only a small percentage stronger than your main line.

The last ten metres of line

usually has a join between your shock leader and the main line. Believe me, this is the WEAKEST LINK in your system, so treat it as gently as is possible. If you don’t it will let you down, or rather you will let yourself down!

You can spend days, weeks, months or even years without getting your dream fish so when you do hook that big one, do yourself a favour and heed this advice about getting that last ten metres of line in.

This advice has definitely been learned the hard way, if you get my drift!

These surfcasting principles also apply to boat fishing, as the sight of the boat and a menacing face peering over the side is usually enough to give many big fish the strength to break free.

A shelly, sandy bottom lends itself to drift fishing.

15 – Beef Barrels Fish for prolific blue cod in season over the patchy reef areas. You need a sounder to locate foul to drift as it’s deserted in between. Dive site for butterfish in close often with exceptional visability.

15a – Chicot Rock Well-known reef structure for large blue cod in open season and tarakihi. A good dive site for cray, moki and butterfish.

9a - Rangitoto Islands The northern tip is a winter snapper hotspot. Drift in 7085m for big reds at slack water or during small tides. Occasional big trevs and school groper.

The eastern side provides exceptional free diving with butterfish, moki, tarakihi.

10 – Kidnap Channel Fishing the drop-off for snapper during winter with blue cod in open season and kahawai year round. Snorkel for paua and kina.

16 – Paddock Rocks Spring and summer kingfish, snapper, blue cod (in season), trevally, tarakihi and moki. Use good berley for bottom feeding species. Try trolling live bait for kingfish. The area also provides good opportunities for free diving and spearfishing. Crayfish are also found here.

A good autumn and winter fishing spot for blue cod (in season) and tarakihi. You could find school groper and john dory in late winter here.

19 – Bottle Point Perch year round. Snapper can be found here in late autumn with kingfish and pup groper in winter. Strong currents mean big sinkers.

20 – Nile Head Winter fishing hotspot for big snapper. Drift the bottom in 60-90m for 15lb-plus snapper.

21 – Port Hardy Red cod and warehou are found here in winter. From spring through until autumn there are cruising kingfish, kahawai, snapper and trevally, particularly around the mussel farms.

21a – Inner Port Hardy Free diving the rocky coves produces good results for butterfish, moki and crayfish.

22 – Fleet Rocks Snapper and tarakihi during late autumn. Look for big paua in Skull Bay and sizeable kina in close.

23 – Okuri Bay Snapper hang around the bay spring to summer, with schooling kingfish summer to autumn. An ideal freediving location for kina but paua here seldom reach legal size.

45 - Sentinel Rock Off the back of this rock structure, the bottom quickly drops away. Ideal groper habitat.

46 - Titirangi Entrance The furtherest point you can drive to in the outer Pelorus. Boat fishing for cod in season and excellent weedbanks for crays, paua and kina.

The sandy beach holds pipi and presents surfcasting opportunities for snapper, moki and kahawai.

BLUE LIGHT The navigation lights of ferries departing Picton Harbour at night can be difficult to detect amongst the background of shore lights.

To help overcome this problem blue quick flashing lights operate in Picton Harbour every time a ferry departs the berth at night. These lights continue to flash for approximately 10 minutes.

One blue light is stationed atop a tower on the seaward end of Waithoi Wharf and a second light is stationed on the seaward end of the Picton Marina Breakwater (see diagram opposite).

Deep water is accessed through Tory Channel and towards the north entrance. Wreck diving is a major drawcard around Cape Jackson, with three noted wrecks adding to the mystery and appeal of the area. Reserves (closed to fishing) foster abundance. Picton and Waikawa Bay offer ‘city style’ amenities and great marinas.

12 - Waihi Point: Cape Jackson Some of the best spear fishing in the Sounds. Available species are butterfish, moki and tarakihi. Crayfish prolific in rock cracks.

13 - Cape Jackson Year round tarakihi, blue cod in season and free diving for butterfish in extensive weedbanks. From summer autumn you’ll find kahawai and kingfish in the current (strong). Fish around Walker’s Rock for trevally.

27 – Bushy Point Free dive for butterfish, paua and tarakihi. Good year round boat fishing for tarakihi, perch and blue cod in season.

28 -Rangitoto Wreck: Cape Jackson Sunk over 130 years ago this is an excellent wreck dive with abundant fish life including, butterfly perch, tarakihi and blue cod in season.

29 - Lastingham Wreck: Cape Jackson A historical wreck with a huge amount of fish life seen. Some big crays resident on the wreck and surrounding reef. Kingfish also seen regularly during the summer.

30 - Mikhail Lermontov: Port Gore The ultimate wreck dive with divers travelling from all over the world to dive this 176 metre Russian cruise liner.

Voluntary no fishing policy exists on the wreck.

PORT UNDERWOOD Port Underwood is exposed, with the water usually cooler than the other sounds, leading to marine life not unlike the Wellington south coast.

It’s a great base for fishing the deep waters of the Cook Strait and the bays provide superb habitat for paua, crays and reef species.

1 - East Coast south to Port Underwood Remember to check the boundaries of the restricted Cook Strait cable area. That area runs from the southern point of Glasgow Bay to Walkers Rock and includes all of Fighting Bay. There is no fishing of any type allowed, this includes trawling, line fishing or set netting. Kina, paua, and crayfishing is only allowed within 200 metres of the low water mark.

Berley forms a scent trail fish follow to find the source, but they also use other senses to find food. Fish rely heavily on sight, and sound in the form of vibrations in the water, to help them home in on prey. By combining these three elements, the berley trail can become more potent.

To make your trail more visible to fish, try scraping scales from previously caught fish into the water. These flicker and sparkle as they drift through the water columns, enticing inquisitive fish from some distance. Perhaps they look like a school of small fish flitting about in the distance. Cutting chunks of pilchards, or bonito and tossing handfuls into the current, or occasionally discarding handfuls of old shells can be effective.

Small bait fish arrive early and can be useful for attracting bigger fish. Time spent catching these will not only provide fresh bait, but the increased activity as agitated small fish dart about underwater will be visible to predators. They also transmit sound vibrations, which compound the effect. Once hooked, the vibrations turn into distress signals that further excite their mates, which telegraphs bigger fish that a party is going down. The more you can stir up the small fish in the berley trail, the greater the chance big fish will be attracted.

Wind does not always blow with the current and a breeze quartering away from the current may push the boat wide of the berley trail and leave the baits shy of the main concentrations of fish.

I prefer to hang the dispenser from the side or stern of the boat. I dispense the berley from the surface in shallow water.; if the boat does swing in the wind, the berley comes with you. In deeper water I lift the dispenser between two to five metres off the bottom, depending on current; strong current lower - weak current higher.
