Its been a bit like a drug to him and he has been full steam mapping every time he goes out.

“The system is absolutely mint, mapping with greater detail than you could ever buy on any electronic chart,” says Mark.

He is serious about his fish and, now John Campbell has been axed, spends evenings analyzing his sonar logs online. As well as the contours, vegetation and bottom discrimination, he marks big fish arches with waypoints to transfer back onto the unit. He is keen as to see if they are holding in the same area next time he’s chasing them.

Not everyone uses their electronics as enthusiastically as Mark, but the kicker is, he’s getting great results. He uploaded the sonar logs from a recent hapuka fish and downloaded the new mapping back onto his unit. A week later, armed with the new mapping, he drifted across the edge of the new bank he’d mapped and his mate dropped, and instantly got smashed. This spot has gone from hit and miss to a certainty, and carved away the time he spends chasing these big boys (see Mark’s story page 8). This should mean he can concentrate more on the reds and kings, and maybe even get home early?

Yeah - nah - just one more drift…

Wellywinter worth it Mark Pandelidis

A

fter being landlocked due to bad weather and work for over a month, I finally got out for a fishing fix. The water temperature was down at around 14 degrees out the west, but I decided to try my luck and have a jig for a late kingfish off Hunters Bank, first up anyway.

It was tough jigging but, after persevering through a heap of barracouta, I finally hooked into something with a lot more weight and the telltale power of a kingfish. While is wasn’t a monster by any stretch of the imagination, only going 9kgs, it was none-the-less a good start to the day. I like to use 2-300g jigs and always run a lump squid skirt off the assist hook. In this case, a pink jig was flavour of the day.

With the tide turning, meaning it was going to be wind with tide, I decided to make the move south for a bottom fish. The target was tarakihi so, after finding a bit of reef in around 30m, I dropped anchor and got the berley pumping. I rigged the flasher rigs for bottom bouncing and set up with a mixture of squid and fresh kahawai bait.

First fish was a worrying sign: the infamous spiny dogfish, which tend to turn up in plague proportions over winter, but luckily, as it turned out, it was the only one for the day.

After getting a few nice tarakihi and a solid 2kg slimy mackerel, which was a first for me off my boat, I again hooked something more solid, with big head nods. Catching enough conger eels to know they can act like this, I didn’t want to get my hopes up until it started peeling line from my little Trinidad 12... this wasn’t a conger!

Sure enough, after a bit of to and fro, I finally got the fish to the boat and it was indeed an unexpected but always welcome snapper, weighing in at just over 5kgs and proving even in winter it’s well worth getting out there and wetting a line as the fishing can be surprisingly productive.

A winter kingi is a good start to the day.

Jubilant swede divorces mother Ian Hadland

STORY

The young Swede is hooked.

Just how an 18-year-old can still be mad on fishing after two years of freshwater angling and having only landed a single fish was beyond me. But this was the exactly the case for my Swedish nephew when he arrived in New Zealand for Christmas. The six-pound pike caught in a small Swedish dam had obviously left an indelible impression on him.

With the jetlag over, his attention quickly turned to the trout fishing prospects locally and it wasn’t long before the dinghy was loaded and on the road to Lake Waihola for an evening fish.

After a few quick instructions on how to thread and fish a light Gulp! soft plastic lure, we were all fishing. The shallow edges of the lake in the spring are just alive with baitfish so it wasn’t long before my smelt pattern was engulfed by

a tidy 3lb trout. The nephew’s eyes glistened; almost as though he had caught it himself.

Shorty after, his own lure was hit but he exhaled a Swedish swearword as he missed the strike. Fortunately the trout returned for a second shot and the Swede made no mistake.

He fizzed with excitement and in his best English, tried to explain how jubilant he was.

He needn’t have bothered – it was written all over his face. He went on to catch a 2.5lb perch and another trout of a similar size.

When we returned to the house he explained that the trip had been awesome. His previous catches had been easily eclipsed. He turned to his father and said, “Wing mumma - tell ‘er I’m never coming home.”

Mackenzie’s monstrous marabou magic (front cover story)

The canals of the South Island’s Mackenzie Country have become synonymous with monster trout, as Aussie angler, Brendon Spicer, discovered to his delight.

I fish for trout in Australia regularly, but the size of New Zealand trout is just at another level, especially those haunting the canals of the Mackenzie Country.

On a recent trip I was fishing the Ohau A canal just upstream from the salmon farm.

That particular area on the day was holding tons of big fish, with over twenty 10lb plus fish counted before I hooked this beast.

I was using my Dad’s gear, as I didn’t bring any over from Oz with me. The outfit was a 2-4kg spinning rod, coupled with a 2500 Shimano spinning reel, loaded with 6lb monofilament line. I had one of Dad’s hand tied black marabou jigs on, with a few strands of flash tied into that particular jig. It was tied around a 1/12th oz jig head, which was painted black.

Using such light gear meant any big fish hooked would be a real challenge to land, and this proved to be the case. I hooked the

brownie a few metres from the bank and it put up a 20-minute fight, with many powerful runs both up and down current. This was my largest trout ever landed and I was absolutely stoked.

Generally as the days of April draw to an end, I begin to panic a bit and do whatever it takes to fish every hour left in the month.

Annual leave is the best invention known to fishermen/women that have to work. Time in lieu is another very handy tool that can assist with “extra” hours fishing. And if I were prime minister, there would be so many days appointed to compulsory fishing. Like, Fishing Awareness Week, Take a Kid Fishing or National Fishing Week - couple of days, or maybe a day?

Who knows? Whatever I could get away with -wonder if John Key likes to fish?

Anyway, salmon fishing ceasing is imminent.

It’s not really about catching fish, just about being out there trying to, because at the end of the month, it becomes illegal to do what I enjoy so much.

“Daydreaming” I’m in the truck about to back out the drive just as the sun is coming up, or it’s already up.

I’m heading fishing so who cares what the sun’s doing really. It’s more about the tides and the rain the flow of the river.

I’ve got a cuppa to go, got sandfly stuff, lots of lures, two different rods no, three, the fly rods in the back as well. A sandwich and some fruit, I’m ready to make the most of 29 April for the whole day.

“Night dreaming” At night I have dreams of being down the river without a rod and “watching” salmon porpoise from the other side of the river. That dream isn’t too bad, I can watch them and after the few quick heart beats, I feel my breathing begin to slow down, my contorted face slowly becomes softer and breaks into a sincere smile and my sweaty hands start to dry.

There they go - the breeders! The strong beasts!

Beautiful fish, beautiful body lines, so sleek, so shiny, so strong and they are so determined to get to where they need to go to ensure the species continues.

“Back in real time” Hell what will I do after work during the week when I can’t chase the salmon, what will I spend all day on the weekends doing now?

For most of the people I know it’s merely a small transition back to working in the garden mode, duck shooting, or back to heading to every garage sale on Saturday morning.

“Oh for Gords sake, don’t be such a drama queen! You have to bottle the salmon in your freezer! You have to do some maintenance around your house, spend more time with your grandkids, at the league paddock or netball courts and repair the whitebait net.”

Is there anyone else that can associate with this story? Please tell me there is. Yep. Those last few days do send me spinning.

By Cameron Reid Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, is 45 minutes flight north of Rarotonga, and some say it has the most beautiful lagoon in the world. I agree, but mostly because it is full of fish!

This was our third trip and would last 10 days.

Our target species was bonefish using saltwater fly, but we also packed spin gear: two heavy outfits hoping to target the big and bigger giant trevally and bluefin we had seen on previous trips and a couple of trout outfits to target the smaller lagoon trevally.

The weather was mostly okay, but we did have some strong winds about the half way mark of the trip, which caused big ocean swells and lots of extra water crashing into the lagoon. The locals called this a flood tide, as strong currents raced across the lagoon.

We had one awesome day outside the reef with our mate Greg Chisnall, throwing poppers and stick baits at the coral channels

and gutters in the reef. We hooked several bluefin, GTs and black trev’s, landed a few in the 8-10kg class, and one good GT we reckoned was closer to 20kgs. We also did a bit of trolling and managed to land a 4kg barracuda that was our main course that night.

The bonefishing was tough due to the flood tides, but we saw a lot of fish; we just struggled to get flies in front of them due to the strong currents. After

unsuccessfully targeting them on a flat close to the main shipping channel, Chris hooked and landed the biggest GT of the trip: it took 20 minutes to land on the heavy gear, and we estimated it at close to 30kgs.

We were only back for a couple of weeks, when we started planning the next trip through Phil at Mondo Travel, Motueka. Give him a call and maybe we will see you there!

After a few too many dry boat weeks, a clear weather forecast and reasonable tides inspired me to get the kids out on the water for a quick fish. I generally struggle to get the boat out of the driveway in the winter, but I’d just read a good article about winter fishing - summed up as: there’s still fish to be caught, put on a jacket, harden up and get amongst it.

So that’s what we did - my wife Caroline and our two eldest boys (four-year-old Ethan and six-year-old Cole) suited up, with the other two kids feeling okay about being dropped off at their particularly warm-and-inviting-looking grandparent’s place. We launched at the Nelson ramp and were surprised to be met by an icy southerly, which cut down the options, fishing wise. A peek out of The Cut told me that I would have about three minutes of fishing time before one of the boys turned green and Caz gave me the non-negotiable home-time stare.

We ended up tucking in behind Haulashore Island, in a spot where the sounder showed a

good depth change, along with some fish sign and we were completely sheltered from the wind and chop.

From then on it was all action! As soon as the berley settled, the kids were set up with Black Magic sabikis on the smallest flimsiest kids’ rods we have. I find this is a great way to get some real sport out of the harbour residents $10 rods turn spotty into snapper and kahawai into kingies (from a sport perspective if not for taste!). A couple of minutes later Ethan was fighting to keep the rod off the gunwale as something big struck hard. He had a great little fight as it took out plenty of line and he slowly won it back. When he got it to the surface we were surprised to see that it was just a little spotty... followed by a decent mullet… followed by a gritty little kahawai!

From then on we were all pulling them in one or two at a time and had enough fun to set me up for more winter trips I’m sure!

Fishing with a mate, Greg Terras, in Kaikoura, was damn quiet when suddenly a massive bend in one of my rods told me I’d hooked into something decent. I was up at the car so Greg gallantly stepped in and took my rod… and lost the fish!

Shortly after, Greg hooked something good, only to also lose it after a couple of minutes; the run of play wasn’t going our way so I figured on retiring Greg.

Twenty minutes later I’d sorted my rod, baited it and cast smoothly into the tide. Within seconds line stripped off my reel as weight put another solid bend in the rod. Whatever was on the end wasn’t about to come in easily so a bit of muscle was blended with skill bring the

ten-minute battle to a satisfying end. As colour appeared in the surf, blue on blue, I realised my opponent was a small blue shark and decided then that it deserved its freedom. After a few quick pics on the beach, she was released to fight another day.

She took a piece of kahawai on a Wasabi cod hook, 200lb Black Magic trace, rolling swivel along with 60lb Black Magic shock leader, and was a good test for my favourite rod, an Any Fish Any Where 15 foot 6 with Shimano big baitrunner loaded with 33lb Sufix mono!

Apparently a bluey is not a common catch from shore but I have heard of at least five this past season.

I have put a lot of work in trying to catch groper and largely come away frustrated, but the passion dictates I keep trying.

In fact, I have become a bit over keen and try to think things out, so much so I have started tying my own rigs.

While basically the standard two-hook ledger rig, I have super-sized my model with a 3m trace and running two KL 8/0 Black Magic hooks on droppers, backed with 40cm lumo tubes. I find these hooks are a thinner gauge and have a wider gap than many, and I believe they hook big fish better. At the bottom of the rig I run a 32oz breakaway sinker, and at the

Putting it to the test recently north of the Marlborough Sounds, I tried a new spot and was greeted with a massive rod thump on the first drop. Battling and hauling a massive weight that possessed a belligerent disposition through 170m of water was a good test of stamina, but the reward justified the effort: a spectacular titan weighing 55lb, number four on my groper score card, and another PB to boot!

CHALLENGES + IDIOMS OF COARSE FISHING Aaron Houghton

When my father was alive I used to enjoy many days at the Hurunui River chasing salmon with him. I caught up with mum at Christmas and asked if she still had dad’s salmon fishing gear. She found it and gave it to me. I had the Abu 7000 reel serviced and attached it to dad’s Tri Cast 12ft salmon rod.

Once spooled with some new braid I had a few practice casts in a paddock at home. It didn’t take long to get back into the swing of things and plans were hatched to chase the salmon once more.

The first trip to the Hurunui was a bit of a mission as I didn’t realise there was a one kilometre walk along the beach to get to the mouth, which in soft shingle is no fun. I caught a couple of kahawai and used this time to perfect using the big gear again. The next trip saw me a bit more organised by taking my quad bike to make the journey along the beach. No salmon this time but I did catch five more kahawai and helped a mate land a salmon, so at least I got to see one.

Deciding a mid-week mission was in order I duly arranged some time off work and loaded the quad bike and gear onto my Hilux. At 5.00am I hit the ground running. I got to the mouth and there were a handful of regulars

already fishing in the perfect conditions.

After rigging up, I joined in and began methodically casting and retrieving. Suddenly three of us hooked up on one of the many kahawai present. Mine felt a bit different which I concluded must be a foul hooked one. With the drag wound up I proceeded to get it in as quick as possible. Near the shore he showed his back and I nearly had a panic attack as I recognised it was a salmon. A quick back off of the drag and I took the battle a whole lot more seriously. After five minutes, I couldn’t believe it, I had caught a salmon and on dad’s rod and reel, I was chuffed.

Not long after I hooked up a kahawai and then 10 minutes later I was hooked up again and this had the same feel as my earlier salmon. Giving good strong runs I took my time and with the help of a fellow angler, salmon number two for the morning was secured.

I couldn’t believe my luck, there were 10 anglers who caught three salmon and I’d caught two of them. Dad was certainly keeping an eye on me today.

Plans have been made for another go at the mighty salmon and I’m sure dad’s rod and reel has a lot more action left in it yet.

Bites on Peacock’s Waggler!

As you may have figured out, the float is the integral piece of kit in this approach. It helps us to present the bait and it indicates what is happening under the water. If it’s sitting there like a dead duck then the float is telling you that there is either A, no fish present or B, you are doing something wrong. It may be you are too far over depth or off the bottom, either way you’re not where the fish are.

If your float is moving about, getting bumped around, then this is telling you A, they don’t like your bait or B, it’s presented wrong.

The variety of floats available in the European markets to the modern day angler is mind numbing. We don’t, for the most part, have the floats needed for coarse fishing available here.

You can buy some off eBay or Kiwi Coarse Tackle and if you do, I strongly suggest a simple starting point being a 5BB or 2AA peacock waggler or crystal waggler style of float.

What the heck are 5BB or a 2AA? Simply put, this is your indicator on the number and shot

size the float will take to sit perfectly in the water. 5BB will take 5 BB shot, a 2AA will take 2 AA shot or the equivalent weight in BB shot.

5BB is a good all-round size that will cope with most conditions, yet it still remains relatively sensitive to fish bumps, knocks and most importantly bites. Stay away from pole floats unless you are pole fishing. For rod use, stick with waggler floats as it is what they are designed for. A pole is not a rod but more on poles later on.

Can’t I just use a simple bubble float? Yes you could, but it is far less sensitive and will not communicate effectively what is going on underneath the water. Coarse fish can be so subtle in the take, a 0.3 gram float will hardly budge, but that’s fish on to the trained eye, so do yourself a favour and spend a measly $3 at Kiwi Coarse Tackle and get the right float for the job.

Fish Profile – Pacific Oyster The Pacific oyster is the gypsy of the oyster family, being pretty much a good traveler and radiating from its home range of Japan to colonise the Pacific, North America and parts of Europe. The Pacific oyster arrived in New Zealand in the fifties but became noticeable in the seventies, and has proved a mixed blessing, as it is considered an invasive species. It was initially regarded as a pest and a threat to our oyster industry because of its fast growth and adaptability, rapidly building in abundance and ultimately ‘choking out’ natural best of native rock oyster.

Distribution The Pacific oyster, Japanese oyster or Miyagi, is an inhabitant of the intertidal and sub-tidal zones and is now common in estuaries around the North Island and the Top of the South.

It is characterised by sharp-edged shells with large rough radial folds, that are thinner than the rock oyster. The two valves of the shell are slightly different, with the right being moderately concave. The shell colour is variable: white to off-white with bands of yellow, brown or purple. Shells are commonly 10 - 12cm long but do reach 18cm.

The Pacific oyster settles further up the estuary than rock oysters and at a lower tide level, hence its ability to ‘take over’ the range of our native rock oyster.

Food value Because of the Pacific oyster’s rapid growth and productivity, it attracted the attention of the commercial industry in the eighties and ultimately replaced the rock oyster as a commercial species.

Quick growth and good meat weight made it more economically viable.

Recreational gathers can still harvest natural beds at low tide by prising shells off rocks with a screwdriver or blunt flat bladed knife. There is a knack to opening them: cup side down in palm of hand with hinge toward you. Poke oyster knife in at hinge, twist and cut around toward front to lever open, with the blade angled up to the roof of the flat shell.

My red carpet moment I’ve always scoffed at the pomp and celebrity surrounding the Academy Awards but it is nice to get recognition from your peers. In a world that is increasingly becoming dog eat dog, I worry that we are being insidiously drawn to focus on the negative rather than celebrate the positive. It is something we strive to do with The Fishing Paper & NZ Hunting News - celebrate happy people in happy situations - focus on the positive.

The paper is ten-years-old this September and I think we do have a winning formula. The ABC Audit this year recognised this by acknowledging that we are now the highest circulated fishing/hunting/outdoor publication in the country. More important to us is our relationship with you guys, our readers, and it is heartening to get the big tick of approval: ABC Audit also showed that we achieve a staggering 97% pick up rate, which is unparalleled in print media in New Zealand.

Building on this, we entered the Community Newspaper Association Awards for the first time this year and picked up gongs in the ‘Best Headline’ and ‘Best Advertising Feature’ sections. ‘The jigs up Mitch’ and ‘Sika News’ struck a chord in the industry, just as the paper has struck a chord at grass roots.

For my ‘Academy thank you speech’ I’d just like to say this: the paper is very much the product of a team effort and I thank everyone who contributes, from my core staff of Annette, Ron, Paddy and Desiree, through to all my amazing contributors and regular columnists who stamp a little of themselves on each issue. And the biggest thanks to all who pick up the paper each month: at the end of the day it is your paper and that’s what makes it the success it is. NZ Distance Casting Regular readers of this surfcasting column will know I have tried to give advice to fishers about developing a longer distance cast. My personal distance casting style, with body rotation, follows the example of Australian champion caster, Scott Selby. This is a safe beach cast, absolutely suitable for most surfcasting situations.

Fortunately we now have a Facebook page: NZ Distance Casting, started by Mark Graham and containing already an absolute wealth of information, diagrams and videos, relating to distance casting.

Mark wisely does not want this site to be cluttered with fishing information as this is well catered for elsewhere.

Tip of the Month: Slow Jigs Slip You The Edge Winter provides some of our best fishing because fish are schooled up and not spread out. They tend to be in deeper water and therefore easier to target.

Bottom Ship and slow jigs are proving very effective at present, particularly on big fish. They catch most species and are particularly effective on snapper and big blue cod.

Drop the jig to the bottom and very slowly wind it in for ten or twenty turns, before dropping again to the bottom and repeating. Alternatively, wind two or three turns off the bottom and gently lift and drop your rod tip to simulate a yo-yo motion. You can even use a slow mechanical jig action.

TECHNIQUE Fish slow jigs from a drifting boat on light tackle and 15kg braid - particularly effective on softbait sets - and as the name suggests, use a slow, gentle action.

BIG SNAPPER All big fish get to be big by being cagey - they stand back from the crowd. Big fish like to ambush their prey, so fish the outside edges of school fish to find the monsters.

the New Zealand Angling and Casting Association to contribute to this article and this is his response. Thank you Jim. The New Zealand Angling & Casting Association was formed in 1955 to encourage and develop the sports of angling and casting, the formation of fishing clubs and to foster the comradeship among amateur fishers and promote the conservation of fish and their habitat.

Apart from representing our members at all levels, the association runs a national championship that includes competitive fishing and also a casting competition.

The sport of distance casting is thought to have begun in 1881 and the first official event was held in Hendon, England.

During the first two decades of the century many European countries got organised into national federations and regularly held tournaments. The first one in Sweden was held in 1917.

Distance casting has evolved with the introduction and development of specialised rods and reels. After WW II the interest in the sport grew and it soon became apparent a unified set of rules and regulations needed to be developed and in 1953 an invitation was sent to all

the federations to join what became the International Casting Federation. In 2012 the NZACA decided to embrace the UKSF rules. This allows the caster to use different line weights, coupled with different lead weights and attempt international records. Recently the association has also encompassed a set of rules for the fisher who wishes to enter the competitions using the gear they would fish from the beach with.

The NZACA hold three regional competitions, clubs hold their own competitions that include a National Postal event and a separate club event.

The finale of the season is the NZACA Nationals in March or April.

The NZACA is actively working hard to promote and raise the profile of this little known sport. We have several casters who consistently break the 200m mark with the current NZ Record at over 246m. SERVES 4-6

• 1 pottle fresh Kono Pacific Oysters

COOKING with CRIMPY

• Skipper’s Choice Tempura Batter mix • Ice • Flour for coating • Rice bran oil

Tartare sauce • 1 cup Best Foods Real Mayonnaise • 1 heaped tbsp finely chopped gherkin • 1 tbsp finely chopped red onion • 1 tsp chopped capers • 1 liberal lashing cracked pepper Combine all the ingredients in a bowl until well blended.

Put aside.

Mix batter according to directions. For best results iced water must be used!

Coat oysters in flour, dip in batter and deep fry in small batches in oil heated to 180C until golden and crispy.

In contrast to the dredge, the Pacific is silky, creamy and smooth on the palate with a milder flavour, so perfect for the less adventurous and a great alternative for oyster fans. made their way up the go-by and up to my whiteboard but stopped short and were hesitant about crossing into the net.

Slowly the first couple went across, then a steady stream followed - all of them went into the net.

After checking the nets twice more we came away with about 2½lb of whitebait for my first day out in nearly four years.

To be a whitebaiter you have to have the gift of patience, you have to be able to sit and not catch anything for long periods without getting frustrated, and then suddenly have the skills and calmness to be able to move with purpose and decisiveness. People ask why I do something for so little gain but for me it’s not about how much I catch or how big it was or wasn’t. It’s about getting out there and doing it.

Just being out there is what counts.

t was about 5.15am when I heard the rumble of Don Hobbs’ Toyota pull up outside. I headed out the door, throwing my stuff in the back of the wagon and loading the nets into the trailer.

As we neared the turn off to Kainga Beach, we could already see a few torches on the edge of the Waimakariri river; it was still early in the season but whitebait were being caught and we wanted a piece of the action.

We pulled up next to the river and started unloading. We were using the old triangle set net and go-bys. I moved off down the river, found a nice spot about 30 metres from Don and started to sort my gear.

I placed my netting go-by in the water, banging in a stake at one end and pulling it tight on the other, and banging in a stake at the beach end, placing a whiteboard down in front of where I was to drop my net at 6.00am.

I ambled up to see if Don needed a hand, but he didn’t, as usual, so I poured us a coffee and waited for 6.00am to roll round.

Beep, beep, beep, went my watch, in went the nets and we were fishing.

After about 15 minutes, I headed into the water for the first lift of the season. As I lifted the net, I was pleasantly surprised to see a flickering in the bottom: there were not many, maybe ¼ cup, but it was still WHITEBAIT. I put the net back in and headed up to Don to see how he was getting on, and he had about the same as me.

When the sun rose, I went to check my net again and, as I got closer, could see a shoal of whitebait in front of me. I moved slowly, trying not to spook them. They

Swarovski Optik’s international sales and marketing manager, Richard F. Kramer, once said that New Zealand conditions provide the best testing ground for their precision hunting optics, and his words were fittingly put to the test in late May when rain, snow, blustery wind, and the rugged Central North Island High Country landscape collided to create a momentous press event unparalleled in trans-Tasman history. Crimpy gatecrashed the party and came away enlightened.

t was the first time leading Australian and New Zealand gun writers had met on common turf, ostensibly to test and review a new product, and it didn’t pass without a good measure of trans-Tasman rivalry. The event, organised and hosted at by NZ Ammunition Ltd, marked the release of Swarovski’s new long range X5(i) target rifle scopes.

The choice of venue, a rustic hut-come-lodge on Ngamatea Station, proved a fitting backdrop with wild sika foraging the nearby bush edges amidst heavily falling snow, with a log fire keeping the chill at bay. The inclement weather delayed the arrival of the Ockers and seminar presenter, Richard F. Kramer, but, formalities aside, he wasted little time bringing out the goodies and launching into a polished spiel.

Together with the X5(i) range of scopes, he introduced the updated EL Range binocular and the STR 80 spotting scope with illuminated reticle. The idea behind the ‘threesome’ is to provide the perfect package for long-range shooting and it is a tidy mix. Swarovski have

taken on board feedback, improving the EL Range binoculars with a more precise range finder button, improved ergonomics and a slight weight reduction. The ‘engine room’ remains unchanged.

The star of the show was the X5, but moments into his sales pitch Richard fell into paroxysms of stuttering and shaking, which, coupled with the inability to say big words, lead us to briefly believe he was suffering a stroke or had instantaneously reverted to infant hood. However, the affliction was benign and Richard did eventually calm down without medication: a rather monstrous eight-point sika stag was staring at him through the hut window and taking in proceedings - the new scopes really were proving popular! The effect on a dozen gun writers was more electrifying: bodies flying, elbows jostling, cameras whirring and all thoughts of the classroom ‘out the window’!Richard did well to get us back on track.

The new X5(i) comes in two models: the X5(i)

3.5-18x50 with 1/4 MOA, and the X5(i) 5-25x56 with 1/4 MOA or 1/8 MOA. the (i) stands for illuminated and on the X5(i), the entire reticle is illuminated and offers 10 illumination levels.

The scopes also come as a non-illuminated choice in the X5.

An innovative feature of the X5 is the new spring retention system, which enables an adjustment range of 116 MOA that, when coupled with the 1/4 or 1/8 MOA, gives very accurate impact point adjustments.

The parallax turret allows easy adjustment at whatever range you are shooting and the magnification indicator ring is designed to be read clearly from the shooting position. The top turret features a viewing window so you can clearly see the rotation setting, and a ‘stop’ allows for quick return to zero or the sight in position. It also has a subzero function that allows you to shoot accurately below the sight in distance, and there is the option of having a personalised cam made and fitted.

Each model comes in a range of reticles, illuminated and non-illuminated: BRM with holdover lines and 2 MOA markings, 4W with windage marks of 2 MOA, 4WX with 1 MOA windage, and the basic plex. JP Klaus from NZ Ammo said all models will be available but said they will hold good stocks of the 4WX in illuminated and non-illuminated, he predicts this will be most popular.

Of course, the highlight for any gun writer is playing with the toys, so it was not a silly idea to have a shoot-out between the Aussies and Kiwis but, sadly, OSH regulations prohibited face-to-face combat. Instead, we ‘plinked’ some big steel gongs at 375yds, 550yds, 1,000yds and 1 mile.

The conditions were horrendous, with gusty winds at various points over the course and sometimes from dual directions. First up was the ‘eye-opener’ at 375 and 550yds using a Merkyl Helix and Norma Diamond Line 130g factory ammo. Despite the wind variations, the combination of Greg Duley calling the windage and JP adjusting the scope put everyone on the metal.

with the X5 3.5-18x50 was up to the task, but over this range wind became a major factor and the benefits of the scope were noticeable. We all repeated this range with a McMillan .338 Lapua Mag equipped with the X5(i) 5-25x56, shooting Norma 250g factory loads. For a dozen different gun writers to be able to consistently shoot well from basically untuned rifles with factory ammo in blustery conditions was impressive and pointed to the quality of the optics.

The highlight was when we all committed ourselves to the asylum with relish - shooting the mile target with Greg Duley’s .338 ‘Lunatic’ Wildcat! What a blast - literally and figuratively.

I could wax lyrically but I did hit the bullseye at a mile with my first shot - ‘nuff said!

As for the trans-Tasman rivalry? We whupped them good and proper, but if you ever pick up an Aussie magazine and read something different - just remember they are a biased lot!

Big bush big buck

Help stop the spread of TB in pigs

Checking the wind, I dropped down to a swamp at the tail of a long bush gully. I was walking into the wind and there were plenty of prints about: reds, fallow and pigs too. As expected, the dog flushed many ducks, hares, possums and pheasants but I saw no deer.

As I approached the creek head, I was expecting to see hear deer, as this is the kind of place they like to hang out on dark - it was 5.30pm. I entered the bush, which was really steep on each side, and followed a major game trail for quarter of an hour. I gave a roar on my roaring horn.

The trail led to a side ridge overlooking a grassy clearing on the bush edge and surrounded on three sides by manuka - the perfect spot for a hungry deer. I hugged the bush line so as to keep any game from spotting me. I tried a fallow grunt on the horn and immediately heard a reply up ahead, almost like a sika squeal.

Working into the wind, I kept B in close. The pines rose steeply to my left and suddenly B got a whiff of her prey and shot off. I heard a commotion and looked hard into the dark bush; I could see a number of deer - reds - and tips of antlers going up and away. I threw my Sako up as a big antlered animal appeared between two trees and was about to fire, when he surged toward my position with B on his tail. He broke out of the bush, clearing an old sheep fence at 50mph and ran onto the clearing. I swung the scope on

The capture and release of wild pigs has the potential to spread bovine tuberculosis (TB) to areas that are free of the disease. The introduction of TB into a ‘TB free’ area results in many years of intensive possum control and this often includes the use of 1080.

Pigs are highly susceptible to TB, if the disease is in an area, through eating any dead or infected animals.

Infected pigs that then die in the bush, or are killed and him, running the cross along his body and quickly fired. The big buck somersaulted and was back on its feet, heading for thick bush.I lined up again and, at seventy yards, put another shot into it. I knew he was hard hit but running on adrenaline, so I put another shot into it before it was able to jump down a steep bluff. It dropped on the spot.

B was on it like a shot, ripping at its ears, throat and balls, so I called her off. Approaching the beast, I realised it was the biggest fallow buck I’d ever shot - too big to lift - and it had fallen right on the edge of the canyon!

Winter deer hunting is a missed opportunity for many. Yes, 5.00am Saturday morning starts are hard if there is a hint of snow or ice on the ground, but remember, the days are short so you will be home before midnight.

Another positive is deer are concentrated in preferred feed areas and, as they don’t generally like cold, damp faces or being exposed to strong winds, are easier to find. They will be up off the valley floor where they can better utilise sunshine and avoid the heavy frosts that turn the valley floor into something resembling an ice freezer.

However, it can be difficult to defeat the senses of mobbed deer in the bush; more noses to smell you, dear! Therefore, slowly stalk into the prevailing wind, with the scope screwed down to the lowest power, as it’s difficult to snap shoot on high power.

cleaned out there, can also become a further source of the disease back into other animals, mainly possums and ferrets. Infected possums and ferrets then spread the disease on to farmed cattle.

Some hunters have been known to transport and then release pigs into new areas to boost the local hunting stock – this practice is illegal under the Wild Animal Control Act. Farming communities are aware that this activity is increasing and are concerned about the resulting intensive pest control and cost to farming production if TB does get established.

Hunters should also be aware of the risks when handling potentially infected pigs. Humans can get TB

After midmorning as the day warms can be productive. Glass across gullies onto open areas where the deer are trying to get a guts full of tucker before the sun goes down and somebody turns the winter fridge back on for the night.

Good optics, like Swarovski, always help - if you can’t see it, you can’t shoot it. And the chance of mistaking a person for a deer is reduced with good optics.

Proper gun fit is also very important. A good test is to bring the rifle up quickly and if you don’t instantly align on the target, some adjustments to the rifle and or the scope are required.

Floating gremlin spin Kim Swan

Can the human heart breakdance? I’m sure my heart is break dancing right now. It feels like it’s doing a rehearsal for New Zealand’s Got Talent. Deep within my amply-padded rib cage it’s well into a routine of windmills, head spins and jackhammers - mainly jackhammers - or so it seems. I started out all casual and relaxed. Rifle slung over my shoulder, binoculars in my hand, nose to the wind, eyes peeled. But it was my ears which got me where I am now. My ears which led me to a spur below the main ridge.

Below me, somewhere, a stag is roaring. He is yelling loud and long down in a steep-sided gutter. His roars bounced back and forward before they funnel up to me all distorted. If I didn’t know better I’d think there was a lion down there, a huge lion with anger management issues. I’m not-so-casual now. Nope!

Now my binoculars are slung over my shoulder and my rifle is in my hand. My heart has advanced to Buddha spins, boomerangs and flares. Its doing the wild thing with a will of its own. There’s so much adrenaline coursing through my veins I’m a danger to myself.

I sneak and schizzle down the spur. It’s open country, devoid of cover bar a small smattering of hip-high matagouri. Sneaky-sneaky like a timid mouse whilst all about deep roars and sporadic grunts boom and echo. Fifty years of hunting and I’ve never heard such a racket, nor been so affected by it.

Closer. Romeo is amping, cranking out noise continuously.

Dayla Ward (13) is a keen little hunter and, like most Kiwi hunters, started her hunting career on rabbits. She is pictured here with her first rabbit, head-shot at just over 70 metres using a .17 with a suppressor. Needless to say, she is away firing!

Closer. Despite the stag roaring at source, despite his roar-echoes bombarding my world and my heart breakdancing so violently I can hear it ker-thumping against my ribs, my ears pick up a familiar tiny noise. Very nearby I hear the distinctive click of dew claws.

Soon enough a hind wanders into view. Then another. Then another.

Romeo where for art thou?

Floating gremlin spins. Yup, the breakdance move to top them all and my heart is attempting it right now!

Gremlin indeed. The stag roars again and I realise he’s not with the hinds I can see. He has moved, and continues to do so, one hundred metres to my right then down the gulch, then up the gulch, then one hundred metres to my left. A crackle here, a thump there, guttural grunts, a deep throated roar. Sneak, schizzle, wave to the three hinds that are staring at me in horror.

They trot off. Their beau cares not, for he is in pursuit of another hind - she’s hot, they’re not. Then, finally, there he is!

A huge and magnificent monarch of the glen? A multi-tined beasty worthy of heart palpitations and trembling extremities? Nope. The stag who’s been doing all the shouting is a smelly, skinny teenager with pimples and piss-stained pants. A nine-pointer, his headgear is crooked and broken.

The hotty-hind he pursues so relentlessly is not impressed.

She ducks and dives, dodging his attempts to mount her.

His tongue lolls from the side of his mouth, and he roars in anger and frustration. She will not stand, he is not worthy of her affection. Romeo may be a horrid little try-hard, but he is worthy of my affection and my gratitude. He has just reminded me what hunting is all about.

Excitement, anticipation and the unexpected. Adrenaline charged moments, often followed by disappointment.

Being ‘out here’ and making the most of opportunities that come about by luck or by hard work and skill. My heart has done all the jumping (and pumping) that I can stand for one day - all thanks to a deer I didn’t even shoot.

Optically Speaking - with Ant Corke Welcome to my column! I plan to bring interesting tips and snippets to help put more meat in your freezer, or less pests on your property. I will also focus on general topics such as property security and marine safety but first, let’s look at budget priced night vision options for those new to night hunting, and for those looking to improve their success.

Effective night hunting on a budget Winter is truly now upon us, with long cold nights and icy conditions. Whilst many hunters may have hung-up their gear after the Roar, there is an ever growing number of New Zealand hunters who are enjoying the thrill of night hunting.

As a young fella, I would go rabbit and fox shooting with a torch and headlight, and soon realized that even though I spooked a lot of animals with my torch, I was still getting more shots than I would during the daytime. One of my enduring memories is sitting up a tree in mid winter with my .222 Sako Vixen, overlooking a heavily snow clad landscape in -10C conditions. The moon was bright, and I was 'squeaking' to attract foxes, when out of the blue, a tawny owl landed on the same branch I was sitting on. Within a second, the owl realized its mistake and, with a whoosh, was gone. What a great experience, the memory of which I will take to the grave.

There is no denying darkness is a time of great opportunity for hunting and pest control. I would like to explain three types of night vision hunting techniques that are highly affordable, and proven to be effective.

Using a night vision optic to spot game, then using a spotlight or torch to shoot.

This method is popular with hunters who use spotlights, but need an extra element of stealth to spot and approach game. The problem with spotlighting, is that animals are alerted by the light sweeping back and forth, quite often ducking out of sight before the hunter can see them. The short period of time between spotting the animal and taking the shot can also lead to mistakes.

Using a hand held night vision optic for spotting game improves the chances of seeing animals and has the advantage of not alerting the animal to your presence. This means that you spot, approach, and identify your target, before raising the rifle and turning on the spotlight or torch. This gives you extra valuable seconds to aim and take the shot before the animal heads for the hills. The investment required for this type of hunting starts at $449, for a Yukon Spartan night vision monocular that can spot deer at 150m, or up to 300m with the additional investment of a Pulsar L-808s infrared laser illuminator.

Many of our spotlighting clients who invested in a hand held night vision optic, progress to buying a night vision riflescope. The hand held night vision optic is still used to spot, approach and identify the target, but the shot is then taken in darkness with the night vision riflescope. The main advantage of this set-up is the extra time available for range estimation and careful shot placement. Another advantage is that it is better for taking multiple shots. Whilst this may not be important for shooting large animals, such as deer and pigs, it is extremely important for pest control, when a high shot to kill ratio is desirable.

combos that are proven throughout New Zealand for shooting game and pests of varying sizes are available from around $1200. Increasing the budget will increase distance performance, but in my opinion, a higher budget is better spent on the night vision spotting optic for finding and approaching.

Using a head-mounted night vision optic and laser rifle sight.

This has been a favorite night vision hunting technique amongst the early pioneers of the sport for many years. A great advantage of this system is that the night vision goggle or headhunted monocular enables the hunter to walk in the dark, avoiding trip hazards. The laser sight is usually mounted to the riflescope and an infrared torch is mounted on to the barrel for illuminating the target.

Once the target is located, the laser sight is activated for shot placement.

This technique is only useful for close range hunting, the two main range limiting factors are the size of the laser dot, and your ability to accurately place a shot from the waist, or from the shoulder with your head in the upright position. This set-up is especially useful for possum shooting and hunting large game at distances of under 100m. A Yukon head mounted night vision monocular starts at $499.

So there you have it. You don't need to spend a fortune to get into night vision hunting. Once the bug has bitten, it will be easier to invest in better equipment because you will have gained the experience of knowing the pros and cons of your start-out equipment.

K-2 - decades of durability Daryl Crimp

Can you think of anything you bought 41-years-ago that you are still using regularly today?

Better still, can you think of something you bought 41-years-ago that you’ve used most weekends and are still using today, AND that is almost as good as it was the day it was bought?

I can’t think of anything I bought 41-days-ago so that’d be a stretch!

It was also a stretch for Marie Mitchell to imagine what she was up against when she received an surprise request a month ago. Marie owns and produces K-2 Antarctic Products and, after advertising in The Fishing Paper that she stands by her product, had a call from a chap who owned one of the early K-2 packs but it needed some ‘repairs’. It transpired that this chap bought the 90l Oxford Nylon pack in 1974 and tramped extensively throughout New Zealand with it laden and strapped to his back - almost every weekend for four decades. Marie could only wonder at what state she would find in, but readily agreed to honour her commitment.

The pack duly arrived and the repairs required?

Our tramper had aged with the pack and felt the foam in the straps had become a little ‘thin’ and were weighing heavy on his shoulders! Marie kitted the pack with a new harness, complete with modern sternum belt and thick padding.

She also sprayed silicone on the zips, and then there was the ugly DIY patch on the lid. It got the

better of her and she replaced it with a neat and tidy TLC job.

Our tramper friend didn’t want to part with the pack because it was ‘so comfortable and hard wearing.’

That would be an understatement!

Night hunting safety.

The safety considerations for shooting at night are the same as for shooting by day. Only hunters who are competent at safely handling firearms should consider night time hunting.

Positively identify your target: A night vision monocular gives you more time to watch and identify targets than does a spotlight. This is a big plus for night vision.

Ensuring that your background is safe: In total darkness (cloud covered starlight for instance), using a night vision optic with an infrared illuminator has the same limitations as a spotlight for seeing behind the target. In moonlight, the night vision optic will help to see the background. Remember, if you are unsure about your background, DON'T SHOOT! Safe gun handling: Become accustomed to safely using your rifle in the dark. Bolt action rifles are easier to safely manage, though semi-auto rifles are useful for pest control. All other safety rules apply at night same as in daylight.

It is easy to erroneously make the connection to possums if an infected marsupial is found but, in line with Prosser’s revealing of 0.04 percent infection, it is negligible and insignificant.

Heard of TB! Dear Ed, As OSPRI/TBfree NZ couldn’t or wouldn’t answer the questions I asked in the May issue, I will pass on what I now know in relation to those questions.

Question1 related to the TBfree claim possums were responsible for the majority of new TB infections in cattle/ deer herds. A Parliamentary request recently revealed that between 2007 and 2014, 124,213 possums were surveyed for TB infection but only 54 were positive to the disease. TBfree’s possum majority claim is a myth and always has been.

Next I questioned TBfree’s claim the possum was a scavenger. TBfree’s answer to that was to drop all mention of this from their advertising - the scavenger possum label was another TBfree myth.

Question 4 concerned the ferrets role as a TB vector.

In Southland last year there were six new herd infections: three by herd movement and three by contact with ferrets.

TBfree Southland revealed that, over 18 months, 11 ferrets had been trapped, all were positive toTB and all carried the sameTB strain as the infected cattle herds; 11out of 11 ferrets gave a 100% TB infection rate - 54 positive TB possums out of 124,213 possums gives a 0.044% infection rate.

Lastly I asked for verifiable evidence about the number of new TB cattle and deer herd infections caused by herd movement. I have collated herd infection information from rural newspapers and other sources since 2009: a total of 41 herds were infected with TB this way. Ferrets were reported as TB vectors to three, but nowhere did I find reference to any herd being infected by possums.

A news report in the June issue of the Country Courier said, “Since the start of 2000, New Zealand has spent more than $1.2 billion combating the disease and controlling carriers, especially possums.”

Possums? Herd movement is the main vector for new TB infections.

MPI investigates ‘Micegate’

Ministry for Primary Industries recently raised the hackles of local fishers when an Animal Welfare Officer apparently accused the Picton RSA Fishing Section members of live baiting for trout with mice.

Acting on a complaint received from a member of the public, MPI conducted inquiries into the practice of using live mice as bait to catch trout and, in a letter to the Picton RSA Fishing Section secretary, determined that the practice was ‘relatively common amongst the club’s members’. The club was advised to take immediate action to inform members the practice was illegal under 28A of the Animal Welfare Act, and that it could incur a prison sentence of up to three years or a maximum $75,000 fine.

Picton RSA secretary, R T Holmes, said members initially burst into spontaneous laughter but soon realised it wasn’t a practical joke and needed to be taken seriously. Mr Holmes advised MPI that fishing section members only fished for saltwater species and vehemently denied accusations of targeting trout with live mice.

MPI’s Animal Welfare Officer, Peter Molloy, responded to the Picton RSA Fishing Section’s claim of false accusations, stating that MPI acts on information received from the public.

“On this occasion, information was received that this practice was being used, so I took the opportunity to use this situation as an educational one, to broadcast to all South Island organisations who may or may not have a freshwater fishing section.”

Peter said it was in no way designed to be a direct accusation, as firm evidence was not available, however the message had to be strong.

“Instead, this was an opportunity for me to advise clubs and organisations throughout NZ to inform their members that this practice, should it be suggested to them, was illegal and to advise the penalties that it carried. I apologise if my intentions in the letter were misconstrued.”

The Fishing Paper editor, Daryl Crimp, said that while this might seem laughable and an example of bureaucracy gone mad, it does raise concerns of where this type of thinking is heading.

“Scientifically, fish are classified in the Kingdom Animalia, so does that mean it is now illegal to live bait for kingies, could we end up in gaol for taking a JD with a live sprat, or might you cop a $75,000 fine for snagging a marlin with a live skipjack?”

While MPI staff are in the invidious position of having to act in such instances, Crimpy argues that common sense needs to prevail.

“Does bureaucracy not see the irony here? On the one hand we have a mouse plague threatening our forests and it is acceptable to have DoC inflict an excruciating death on them with 1080, yet it is a crime to feed them to the fish?”

And what of pet shops, the world over that breed or sell mice as food for snakes?

As you drive south through the Grey Valley take your time to soak in some of the history. The region was well known to local Maori and many of their names remain today, but when the first Europeans arrived by sea at Greymouth and Hokitika, new names quickly popped up. Keep a look out for locations such as Candlelight Creek, Moonlight, Deadman Creek, No Town and Red Jacks.

The lure of gold brought early Europeans and, later, Chinese, following the lead of George Fairweather Moonlight who came overland from Maruia Valley in 1863. He returned in late ‘64 by sea and discovered the richest ever gold find at Moonlight Gully, from which eight tons of gold was mined.

Once word spread, thousands of miners spilled up the Grey Valley, exploring side valleys and panning the stream shingle in hope of spotting colour. Another strike, about as as far upriver as canoes could transport, at Kamaka became known by the miners as the Twelve Mile and Ongionui Stream became Twelve Mile Creek. 5000 miners rapidly spread throughout this narrow valley.

Five miles up the valley it opens to terraces where the settlement of No Town was established: population circa 1000.

The bustling gold town was serviced by 25 hotels, a collection of shops, a post office, school and a catholic church. It was a vibrant and resourceful community; during the summer drought of 1894 streams dried up and closed the mines, but the miners spirits weren’t dampened. Instead, they looked for glitter of another kind, supporting the school picnic, where the No Town Fife & Drum Band entertained, and school commissioners ran sports events, an evening concert and a ball. All proceeds went to the No Town Cricket Club.

However, not all proceeds were freely given. In 1865, The Bank of New South Wales’ gold buyer and his packer were accosted by five armed robbers in a stream bed between No Town and Twelve Mile. The packer escaped with his 800 ounces of gold, but the buyer wasn’t quick enough and, with a pistol at his temple, surrendered his 824 ounces. The police later arrested suspects but couldn’t get enough evidence for a conviction. The gold was never recovered.

No Town suffered further ignominy, razed by fire and later buried by flood. It was rebuilt but by 1922 was a ghost town. No buildings remain today, although the catholic church survived and was moved to Shantytown in 1969, but, ironically, mining has made a comeback. Since 1976, 17 commercial operators have tried to reap what early miners could not, but only one continues. Modern machinery has achieved what old methods couldn’t; the owner telling me of a recent gold haul of $24,000 in one day, which, no doubt, would have the old miners turning in their graves.

However, the goldfields are still haunted by problems of the past; thieves still look for easy pickings. Over $30,000 of diesel has been taken in one operation and unwashed scree in another. Some have been apprehended and prosecuted but sentencing has been light. Others are known but insufficient evidence hampers further arrest.

Visitors can still get a sense of this amazing history. Travel up the public road to the cemetery where many of these early miners and their families now reside, some under elaborate headstones with wrought iron surrounds, others under big mounds of boulders. But, sadly, the large gold operation and old No Town terrace is out of bounds. CCTV cameras watch over the once busy valley.

What is a drysuit?

Ultimately a drysuit is a sealed unit consisting of wrist and neck seals, ankle seals or attached socks or boots, a dry zip and two valves, one for inflation and one to exhaust.

There are two main types of drysuits available, neoprene or membrane. Unlike a wetsuit that must fit firmly to offer thermal protection, a drysuit has extra room in it to allow you to adjust your underclothing accordingly to the temperature you will be diving in. A couple of kilos here and there will not cause your drysuit to shrink like wetsuits always seem to be prone to. After a couple of dives you will be able to don your drysuit within a minute.

The advantages of diving dry:

• Dive longer and use less air. Less stress on your body trying to keep warm means more conservative air consumption and longer dive time.

• Water conducts heat away from the body approximately 25 times faster than air. Even if you don’t feel the cold in a wetsuit you may be losing heat to the water faster than it can be replaced.

• No wind-chill between dives.

• No cold wetsuit to struggle into on the second or third dive.

• Suitable for all seasons, no need for a wetsuit in summer. Many divers new to drysuits say they will still use their wetsuit in summer but in our experience they don’t, we use our drysuits all year round, even in the north where we do most of our diving.

• Carry less weight on your weight belt. Maybe not initially but once you have some practice, a drysuit often has less neoprene covering your body than a wetsuit, with a jacket and long john you can have up to 14mm of neoprene covering your torso.

Key difference between neoprene and membrane suits Neoprene suits offer thermal insulation on their own and you can use general clothing items underneath to keep warm. In winter, tracksuit pants and sweatshirt or thermals and summer shorts and singlet is fine but membrane suits will need a good quality undergarment in cold water as they offer no thermal insulation alone. A membrane suit can be good when you are diving in many varying temperatures often.

Membrane suits traditionally offered better compression resistance and are favoured for technical diving. A good quality neoprene suit like our Oceandry neoprene suits, which

are hyper-compressed providing excellent cell recovery and memory. They also have optimum resistance against deep water pressure compression.

What is it like to dive in a drysuit?

Imagine you are in a vacuum packer. When you are descending the suit will suction on to you, on ascent the opposite, the air expands. You will remember this theory from your open water course. The air in your suit is easily controlled with your inflation and exhaust valve, you adjust the air in your suit to remain comfortable not for buoyancy control, continue to use your BCD for this.

Drysuits are for the wise diver who wants to

enjoy struggle free donning, reserve energy, dive more often and for longer and stay warm, dry and comfortable, even on the coldest day. A good quality drysuit will last 10-15 years. It comes down to personal preference for which suit will be best for you but do some homework and ask around people you know, so you can make the right decision. The key thing to remember before you purchase a drysuit is the quality of the material. This is a case where cheap and cheerful will not go the distance and can it be repaired and serviced locally in New Zealand? Some new imported suits available now cannot be worked on, or are very expensive to be worked on.

All in all it stacks up pretty well for the drysuit, so start diving warm and dry now.

to the cold: celebrate when you get back, one hundred metres offshore can be as fatal as an ocean crossing if you start out in a poor state.

Can you imagine, wetsuit on, psychologically prepared for the swim, and the current is in your favour. You set out, even strokes, making good progress through the water, skimming along the edge of the harbour entrance to avoid the lunatics in their jet skis, launches, or yachts. Why would anybody not want to experience the thrill of the weightlessness of the swimmer, the sense of achievement when you stand back on the shore.

How tragic was it that the unwary skipper, leaving for or returning from his great day out, didn’t realise the rising or setting sun was affecting his vision. He hardly felt the contact…

You wish you had remembered to wear your high vis swim helmet…

Cast Back in Time Survivors savour trout saviour Ian Hadland

Spurred on by a mixture of enthusiasm and nostalgia, John, Eric and Kevin organised an epic journey from Taranaki to Murchison to hunt deer in the upper Matukituki valley. John, who was only allowed to go if he took his twin 13-year-old boys (me and my brother) seemed confident about the prospects despite it being 1983 - right in the guts of the deer live capture era.

The long drive had The Matukituki brown trout that saved knackered everyone but the day... er, trip! the long walk with heavy packs into the historic Downies Hut finished us off. I remember collapsing on a lower bunk and reading the aged graffiti on the walls, some dating back to the early 1900’s. A quick scan of the hut book, reporting scarce deer sign and fewer sightings of animals, should have been a cue to exit the valley. The choppers and the deer pens had seriously reduced numbers; possibly the lowest since their introduction.

We pressed on up the valley and were distracted by some very large trout in a pool. One of the chaps suggested he would shoot one if he was really hungry but thankfully there would be deer to shoot, and the meagre amount of meat we were carrying would hardly be required. John stashed his light fishing rod for a fish on the way home. Eight fruitless days of hunting transpired!

Sightings of old droppings were discussed around the campfire with a degree of hope, but the reality was starting to bite, we were running out of tucker. It was time for plan ‘B’.

John crossed the river for an evening hunt and, shortly after, there was an ear-splitting boom. Excited, my brother and I ran over to help him carry his quarry back to Bob’s Hut. We needn’t have bothered, he was handling the remains of a hare on his own. He held it aloft and yelled across the river, “Got the dinner boys!” We shook our heads, our first deer hunting trip was quickly becoming memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Over the next few days we ate several more hare stews before dejectedly heading back down the valley, not a single deer seen.

Everyone’s guts rumbled like thunder and the small food stash at Downie Hut would be welcome relief.

John retrieved his stashed rod and peered over the bank. A large brown trout weaved from side to side just beneath the surface.

The other blokes looked at it through their scopes and discussed the merits. My brother and I could already smell it sizzling in a pan. Meanwhile John was turning over river boulders and in no time had two bright green stoneflies carefully threaded on a small hook with split shot above. The first cast was good. It had to be for spooky High Country browns. It drifted down the near bank and, at the last moment, the trout swerved off downstream and picked up the stonefly bait just ahead of the exit riffle. He tightened the line and the small baitcaster rod bent over. John ran up the edge as the large trout headed for deep water. The fight went on and on but John was determined not to be separated from our only decent feed in days. Hauled to the bank, it was unceremoniously dispatched and briefly admired. The expert consensus by the non anglers was that the trout was a ten pounder, and it well could have been, although it would be hard to weigh as its flanks were already frying in the remaining butter from the trip.

I still remember the taste of that trout, arguably the finest I’ve eaten, but then it was the first decent tucker we had eaten in days. Tough as the trip was on the waistline, it was still a great introduction to hunting and fishing for us lads and a trip I’ll always remember. Thanks Dad.

Community spirit cements wheelchair structure Ron Stuart

Ron Stuart officially opens the platform.

A disabled fisherman confined to a wheelchair said how aggrieved he was having to buy a fishing licence each year, when he could only fish a fraction of the waters for salmon compared to an able bodied angler. Asked if there was a wheelchair platform on the banks of the Waimakariri River at McIntosh’s so he could fish on equal terms with any other angler, he said it would be terrific and estimated there would be around 150 other wheelchair fishers who would like to join in. The concept of the wheelchair platform was born. The year was 2009.

Through voluntary commitments, architectural designer Andrew Lill presented drawings and plans, and the Department of Building & Housing advised that, under a section of the building act, it could be built without consent or permit.

Environment Canterbury then approved the installation immediately, and Tim Smith, of Smith’s Crane & Construction, considered the specifications and advised they could build this platform, and generously agreed to sponsor the project.

Then the Canterbury earthquakes destroyed the river banks at McIntosh’s, with great portions of the site slipping into the river. This caused changes to the land

profile and it took major work

by Environment Canterbury to reconstruct, rebuild and give protection to the river banks at the site.

When the location had settled and the installation could be reconsidered, revised specifications were required.

Kirk Roberts Consulting Engineers came to the rescue and presented a fresh design and construction plan. Early in 2015, Smith Crane & Construction team, led by Matt Draper, assembled the platform and unique three metre screw piles at their John’s Road site, ready for transportation and fixing into place at McIntosh’s.

Christchurch Ready-Mix Concrete came on-board with support of concrete for the platform and piles, plus shingle to consolidate structure’s installation. Smith’s specialised equipment and techniques were used to secure the platform in place by a very competent team.

With this news, Environment Canterbury offered to supply qualifying wheelchair anglers with a key, to enable riverside access through the Ferry Road gates direct to the platform.

Blackwell’s Department Store offered to be the distribution point for the keys. They operate a fishing section and are open seven days a week.

Completion readies the

platform for the 2015/16 salmon fishing season from November through to April and beyond. The platform is a safe and readily accessible site which will accommodate up to three anglers at a time, so some sharing may be required. When fishing from this platform a wheelchair fisher can compete on equal terms with able bodied anglers, as they can draw their lures through the water, along the river current salmon travel. Salmon pass through this location during their migration from the sea to the spawning alpine grounds, some 80 to 100 kilometres up the river or to the nearby lower Waimakariri waterways of Silverstream or Otukaikino.

Access to McIntosh’s on the Waimakariri is via Kaiapoi to Beach Road then a right turn into Ferry Road. At the end of this road is a carpark and gate, the access point for the river.

When fishing for salmon or trout, a Fish & Game fishing licence is required, available from approved sports stores or Fish & Game.

Facebook crayfish sales worrying Jim Flack

Ministry for Primary Industries Northland staff have found six incidents involving individuals offering crayfish for sale on various Facebook ‘buy/sell/ swap’ pages in May and June. It is illegal for people to buy, sell or swap their recreational catch and MPI is speaking to all involved.

This follows an MPI swoop in South Auckland in March where five properties were searched after being identified selling black market seafood from a Facebook page. MPI treat breaches of this nature seriously; people committing such offences risk facing prosecution and serious fines of up to $250,000 as well as forfeiture of any gear used in the commission of the offence.

MPI Acting Northland District Compliance Manager, Stephen Rudsdale, says it is positive to see the public reaction to these sites, with most people realising this is illegal and posting messages indicating this to the sellers.

“We would like to remind the public, it is illegal to offer to sell, sell, trade and purchase seafood that has been recreationally taken. People who buy black market seafood also expose themselves to potential health risks, as

there is no assurance that this product has been processed or stored hygienically,” he said.

‘Old Cow’ gives snapper stick Brian Fensom

T

he objective was to target big winter snapper on light tackle with slow jigs. Joining me on Outta Hair was son, Troy, Dave Bright, and Gavin Williams: a crew of experienced jig fishers.

Earlier in the day we’d tried our luck on kingfish, with Dave taking a nice 13kg fish while mechanical jigging. It was the only one to show an interest, so we cruised about quietly looking for snapper sign on the sounder, while waiting for the ride to turn. In the hole off Stephens, the sign shows up as a big ball on screen, and it was over such a mark we all dropped: three slow jigs and one baited rig. Instantly, four robs dipped and

loaded. The action was hot and fast, and in no time we’d boated four good size pannies. As often happens when chasing winter snapper, the school disappeared. The fish were clearly moving and we couldn’t relocate them so headed to another spot.

With the tide just moving on the outgoing, we set up for a drift over 70m using slow jigs. Troy laughed at my battered and tattered old creamy coloured jig with a splattering of black dots.

“What are you going top catch on that,” he scoffed, “it looks like an old cow, Dad?” Pretty much as soon as ‘the old cow’ hit the bottom, my rod loaded and line peeled. It was clearly a big fish. On light gear, 15kg braid with 130g jig on a Shimano Oceanic 100-200g rod,

these horses take some coaxing to the surface, especially when they are sucking on a cow, and after ten minutes we saw colour.

A good start to the drift - a twenty-pounder! Dave had already beaten me to the boat with his fish, a 17lb snapper, so we turned back for another drift.

At this point, while my back was turned, my rod was stolen - or rather, rustled! Seems the ‘old cow’ had another fan. Troy had commandeered the rig and was loaded the moment the jig hit the bottom. Same scenario as the last, but a quicker battle to the boat; his was only a fifteen-pounder! As he released it, Troy graciously said to me, “I’ll let you have another turn at driving your boat, Dad!” Normally he hogs the helm but an infatuation with an ‘old cow’ had changed his focus.

“Loaded!” he shouted. His rod had a huge bend and the tip was nodding vigorously. “Looks like the ‘old cow’ has done it again!”

His delight didn’t end there. At nineteen pounds, Troy’s snapper was his PB, and he was rapt. I was pretty stoked too, as it proved us old heads still know a thing or two: it doesn’t pay to give the ’old cow’ too much stick, because she may just have a little bit of fight left in her!
