Combining the skills and experience acquired from many years of marine electrical engineering and merging it with knowledge and systems gleaned from installing top end home automation, we were able to come up with a practical solution.

FIBS does two things in a wheelhouse: it removes the need to physically shift the electronics around and also reduces clutter, and therefore the number of screens needed to do the same job.

We set up our prototype with four 24” Simrad displays and placed the brains of the system tidily in a centralised rack, a concept used in home automation.

With old technology, information was fed into the screen unit and interpreted there prior to being displayed, so the whole unit would need to be shifted if you wanted the information relayed to a different location.

Modern electronics now house their brains in a separate box outside the screen - this is

called black box technology. This allows us to store the brains for Radar, Echo Sounder, Video, Software based plotting, and PC’s, in a convenient, contained location, while rerouting the various information to different screens and to switch screens as we need. In other words, each screen could display any of the inputs. We are also able to integrate different brands so operators can often use existing inputs, eliminating the need to be brand specific or buy everything new.

Smart control units enable custom programming of the system for a number of different configurations. Each skipper has his own profile and can change how the screens are displayed at a touch of a button, with a single keyboard and mouse to control all of the screens.

One of these profiles allowed a skipper to set their selected pre-positioned electronics up for fishing and, at the same time, closed electronic blinds, dimmed the interior lights and turned on the commercial navigation lights. A touch of a screen and it all changed again.

Add Gofree Wi-Fi and an iPad into the mix, and the skipper can monitor any of the electronic inputs from anywhere on the vessel.

FIBS really does change the way we are now able to interact with and better manage our larger vessels. It really is ’Intuitive Technology’, bringing simplicity and versatility the likes we’ve never seen before to our commercial fleets.

High Reach Fishing for Salmon (Part One)

I am fortunate to have a jetboat and access to a bach, so fishing further up is accessible. It also helps that I have a job that allows me to work hard during the off-season so that I can really focus on the salmon when conditions are ideal. With the boat, I can move quickly, fish different waters, see a variety of sights and have a lot of fun. It also allows me to track fish once I find them: by studying river flow, conditions and fish activity, it allows me to have some idea where the run is in the river and move with them over a period of days. Being able to do this increases my chances of finding the run of salmon and increases my chances of catching them.

Once the salmon are well up in the upper reaches, the style of fishing is different. The real estate changes, with deeper holes and cooler water. The fish have had a break from the frenetic activity at the mouth, where they have to contend with a multitude of anglers peddling jewellery - and lots of it. Lower down, the braided

Early in the season I can be found in the lower reaches of salmon country, but once the fish are moving through the river, I prefer targeting the upper reaches. While many good anglers enjoy consistent success near the mouth or lower reaches, it is the upper reaches where I catch most of my fish and where I am happiest.

The Rakaia is my favourite haunt, although the Upper Waimak’ gets my attention when conditions dictate and the Hurunui gets a look in occasionally. Sometimes I might be spotted flicking metal at the popular McIntosh’s Hole, but that’s always a prospecting mission to get a handle on what the fish are doing.

The appeal of high reach fishing is many layered: I love the solitude of fishing alone, the camaraderie of fishing alongside a couple of mates in remote locations, and the variety of fishing options open to the mobile angler.

river is shallow and, consequently, in the warmer months water temperatures can be higher and water levels lower, making the fish less active. Further up, the rest and cooler temperatures makes the fish more active.

The downside is that some of the fish have lost a lot of condition and are not the best for the table, so I tend to release quite a few.

This in itself is a good thing: to enjoy a healthy battle with big fish and then be able to release them to breed and add to the fishery is very satisfying. And they have been big fish this season, with all mine, bar one, weighing over 18lb. The exception was a 9.5lber. I release at least 40% of my catch but I am not averse to taking the good ones for the table. And contrary to myth, there are good eaters in the high reaches. Where and how do I catch them? I was fishing the gateway for searun or kahawai with the softbait rod down at the south side of the Rangitata in January, changing weights to suit as it approached low tide. I was drifting a Berkley Gulp! Smelt on a 3/8 jig-head that I’d made. The weapon of choice was a Composite Developments Extra Sense 7’ 9” with a 3 - 12g cast weight, coupled with a Shimano Nexave 2500 reel, spooled with 15lb braid tied straight to the jig (I normally use fluoro leader).

Fishing just inside the mouth using the usual ‘cast toward the other side and let it drift a bit’ technique produced a stunning strike; this brute smacked hard and inhaled the Gulp, the softbait hooking in the roof of the mouth, well back. There was a good half-inch of braid between its teeth and the knot.

I initially thought kahawai but when I saw the

tail slap, I knew differently. Then it went for a quick run toward the mouth and I thought it was going to be a short relationship, but I eased a bit more finger-pressure on the spool and kept the rod high. It was enough to turn it upriver, so I breathed again.

I almost thought I’d lost him at one stage as I couldn’t retrieve line fast enough, so I had to step back a few frantic steps. Eventually, I had control again and then the hectic runs right in front of me started; whenever it sighted me or the bank, it’d scream more line off the reel, usually with a big head-shake thrown in, but I kept pace with it and applied some pain when I could to tire it. I tailed it myself and left a lot of anglers scratching their heads as to how and where to fish.

This is my second salmon on softbait so there’s definitely something in this technique.

As you know, I’m a dyed-in-the-wool saltwater fisherman, but when my mate was angling for someone to accompany him to the canals for a spot of freshwater fishing, I thought, ‘What the hell!’

We were fishing right up the top of Pukaki Canal by the inlet and the fishing died off with the current flow.

I managed to find a bit of drift and flicked out a Gulp! Smelt minnow on a 1/8th Nitro jig-head.

I’m not sure who got the biggest surprise, me or the fish, but the rod loaded up and I struck. There

was a bit of splashing on the surface and then this beautiful chunky rainbow Jack surrendered without much of a fight. I expected more of a battle, as I was using 6lb Berkley Fireline, but the fish didn’t have it in him - perhaps because it was preoccupied with spawning.

I was intent on releasing it, so posed for a quick photo session and then slipped it back into the canal. I think the fish had the last laugh because its parting shot was to spoof all over me before I let it go!

Kyle the Great - A Hang on a Minute Snapper Gurnard Grabber

My great nephew, 14-year-old Kyle Skinner, moved to Nelson from Canterbury with his family two years ago, mainly to be closer to us (we are their only family) and also escape the earthquakes. Kyle had not done any fishing to speak of prior to coming to Nelson and his only fishing since being here has been the four times he has been with us for weekends away on Seas The Moment. The fish he has caught on the three previous trips have all been blue cod, so these were his first gurnard and I can tell you, he was most excited.

The bait was salted bonito fished on 8/0 hooks with a 25kg braid main line. They were caught in the outer Pelorus Sound and on our way back we saw a magnificent pod of orcas near Penzance – about six, all doing their thing. That just capped off a wonderful weekend.

November 9, 2014, was the best day fishing in my short time of owning a saltwater rod. After always borrowing gear, I finally purchased my first saltwater last summer, so have only really taken to sea fishing in the last year. Having been brought up a spin fisher for trout, I can thank my mate, lloyd Wood, for the conversion to chasing kings and snapper. He’s so passionate, always texting to see if I want to wet a line and it is his enthusiasm that led to this stellar day.

The conditions were perfect for fishing on the West Coast, and

we launched from Manu Bay, Raglan, to another magic sunrise.

After an exciting morning catching a few beauties we were about to head back in when I decided I wanted one more go before we pulled anchor. Up to this point, my best efforts yielded 10 - 12lb snapper, which are not to be sneezed at. You wouldn’t read about it… I caught this 25lb snapper in beautiful condition!

I learned two things from a recent trip with Jesse Crasborn and mate, Steve. Always expect the unexpected and it pays to know how to read the sounder.

After a leisurely start and hadn’t gone far off the South Island when Jesse’s eyes lit up. A massive mark had appeared on the sounder, which caused him to pull up and call us all to battle stations. We were hoping for a feed of ‘table fish’ and, if we were lucky, some school groper. I’d tied my own rig using Black Magic heavy supple trace, which is brilliant for tying knots on the thicker trace. By the time I had baited my hooks, the other two had both loaded up on jigs and had huge bends in their rods.

Gurnard like kahawai and it was that simple observation that had me and my fishing buddy, Bobby, heading off at four in the morning to spin-fish the entrance to the Waikawa Marina for little kahawai. Then it was off to Shelley Beach near Picton to target ‘carrots’, right under the nose of civilisation. The yacht club formed an alien backdrop as dawn awakened the sleepy little town and, as the tide retreated, I progressively plucked five gurnard from the shallow waters while Bobby became less friendly.

My tackle was nothing flash; the reel rigged with two-year-old 15-20lb nylon main line to which a simple one-hook ledger rig was anchored by a 5oz sinker. The important part was the bait: a tiny piece of fresh kahawai - gurnard love fresh kahawai. While I was rebaiting, Bobby slipped in and took over my rod holder.

He kept jigging and soon struck another, which again put up a tussle before doing a Houdini. He kept jigging and the third groper stuck at 20 - 30m off the bottom. Incredible.

On my first drop, I straight away hooked up - solid. It was a good workout, so I knew I had a sizeable fish on but wasn’t expecting the monster that eventually broached the surface.

We only had two drops each because that gave us more than enough for a feed, and there is no point raping a resource. The smallest groper weighed 40lb and my biggie went around 70lb.

I cast out. Put the rod in a rod holder. And the rod instantly bent double. Line peeled and the reel screamed. I initially couldn’t get the rod out of the holder because it was wedged so tight, but the fish lost steam after the first powerful run and I got the rod free and into the rhythm of hauling it in, initially thinking I had a big heavy stingray to contend with.

The water was less than two metres deep but the main difficulty in playing the fish lay in avoiding having my rotten line cut by the flotilla of small yachts and boats that now plough the water in front of me. The fish came in and it was no stingray but a 27lb snapper! I’d finally made the Twenty Pound Club. And in style. All my mates had caught 20lbers but when I finally managed one, it beat the lot of them.

Now for a kingfish!

Moeraki Dishes Up Treat

The intention was to go for a blue cod off Moeraki but, with the girlfriend and her two daughters on board, plans can change. Sarah (7), Tineke (9) and mother, Erin, were looking forward to the outing but a lumpy sea out wide made things unpleasant so, after only a couple of cod, I elected to have a crack at trumpeter off Fish Reef; it’s closer to shore and therefore more sheltered and the trumpeter create plenty of excitement when taken on light tackle.

I was using my canal softbait set, a Shimano Status 3-6kg, rigged with 8lb braid and a fluoro slow jig at the deadly end. I usually cruise

around until I locate the fish on the sounder and then drop to where the fish are. Then give the rod a few shakes as I retrieve.

On this occasion, I was completely taken by surprise because the lure was taken right at the boat. I initially thought it was a ‘couta but when it jumped, was surprised to see a kahawai fixed to the line - my first off Moeraki. They are not that common down here and must have arrived with the warm currents. The girls got a real buzz as it was the first time they’d seen a kahawai.

Needless to say, it was consigned to the smoker and what a very welcome summer treat it was.

We’d heard of good catches of snapper in the Kenepuru over the previous week, so, with the weather looking perfect, headed out there for a night fish.

After a bit of unsuccessful trolling for kingies, we headed to my favourite spot and parked up; a bit of dinner and a relaxing evening on the agenda...

The sun was still high in the sky and I had recently caught a small stingray, so when my rod went off I picked it up and said to Brian, “Bloody stingray!” And started hauling it in.

After a couple of good spin offs, I saw Brian get the net and said to him, “Maybe it’s a snapper

after all”.

“Could be,” he replied.

After only about a five-minute fight, this massive snapper popped up!

“Wow, it’s a bloody monster,” gasped Brian, and then set about netting the fish - a lovely 21lb snapper - my PB! Brian caught his nice 19lb snapper a few hours later in the dark. All in all a lovely evening on the water made better by the fact that I trumped his lordship. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to use a little black magic where hubby is concerned - mine was a Black Magic two-hook strayline rig!

How time flies when you are having fun!

It seems like yesterday Annette and I started The Fishing Paper in the back shed, but it is with a sense of pending mortality that I realise we are entering our tenth year. From humble beginnings, the paper grown to be the highest circulated fishing/hunting publication in New Zealand, while paid for publications are experiencing rapid decline in circulation, many haemorrhaging readers.

One Sunday recently, just me and Pop went out on the water. The snapper were back on the chew and a few biggies were lurking around the 20m zone in Tasman Bay, so I did an early morning sprint to the spot with my dad, Trevor Cotton a.k.a Knackers.

We anchored, employed the mussel berley and flicked out the stray-lines rigged with 5/0 hooks and baited with bait du jour - piper (available at Big Blue Dive & Fish). There was a flurry of activity - some welcome and some not so welcome.

We hooked up on some good big snapper but lost four due

to bust-offs or hooks pulling. Then a pup mako paid us a visit, angling for some free breakfast and made a mess of our gear in the process.

Pop wasn’t about to be thwarted by a tiny shark and went on to hook into his best snapper to date. It gave the old codger a right royal workout, stripping line and thumping Knackers’ rod for a good ten minutes or so. He eventually boated the beauty and was stoked to see it go 17lb. Good to see old Knackers is not knackered yet!

Citrus Crust Gemfish with Wangapeka Cauli Cream (Serves 4 - 6) • 2 large fillets gemfish (southern kingfish) cut into serving portions • 4 slices fresh white toast bread, crusts discarded • 1tbsp finely chopped parsley • 2tbsp grated parmesan cheese • Grated zest one lemon • 1tsp piri piri seasoning • Olive oil • 2 sheets baking paper • 1 head small cauliflower • 200mls Wangapeka Double Cream • 50g butter • White pepper

COOKING with CRIMPY

Gemfish is a medium textured and beautifully white sweet fish that is very moist and succulent, provided it is not over-cooked or left to sit too long. I don’t usually mention brands but Wangapeka Cream comes from my old stomping ground and is real country cream I remember having as a kid.

Gemfish is available from Guyton’s and they will deliver fresh overnight nationwide.

Preheat oven to 200C. Cut cauli into florets and place in saucepan. Cover base of pan with an inch of cold water, cover and simmer cauli for 10 minutes or until soft.

Drain and place florets on a tray covered with baking paper. Place in oven and bake for five minutes to remove excess water form cauli.

Add Wangapeka Cream, butter to saucepan and a good measure of white pepper to a saucepan, stirring until melted and combined. Bring to simmer and then remove from heat.

In batches, process cauli and enough cream mix in a blender to form a smooth silky cream. This can be made in advance and re-heated in microwave.

Process bread in food processor to make fine fresh breadcrumbs. Add parsley, parmesan, zest and piri piri and mix well. With the processor going, gradually add just enough olive oil to coat the crumbs and leave them moist but still loose.

Arrange fillets on baking paper and top with citrus crumbs. Bake at 200C for ten minutes, until fish is only just cooked and the breadcrumbs are golden.

Serve with fresh green beans and Wangapeka Cauli Cream. It’s light, airy, succulent and delicious.

Snapper Galore at Mokihinui

For the first time in many years snapper were weighed in on seven days of the 10 day Mokihinui Fishing Competition. Top snapper fisher was 12-year-old Jack Zielenski, who landed a 4.66kg snapper on day one and claimed the major prize.

Lloyd Jones and his equipment endured 55 minutes of gut wrenching strain to land the heaviest fish of the competition, a 33kg eagle ray. Mel Blundell repeated her success of last year by taking out the heaviest fish prize in the ladies’ section with a 2.55kg kahawai. The heaviest kahawai overall at 2.59kg was caught

by Tony Murphy. A 1.20m long rig gained the longest fish prize for Shannon Busch and the

biggest trout prize went to Terry Forsyth with a 1.39kg brown.

In the junior section Kahn Zielenski weighed in a kahawai at 2.55kg to take the top prize and Jeremy Thin was the winner in the trout division with a 1.27kg brown.

The Chuckles Syndicate headed the kontiki class with a 31kg thresher shark and Jason Watson landed the heaviest snapper at 5.43kg.

There were plenty of snapper, kahawai and rig amongst the 127 fish weighed in by surfcasters making the competition, admirably hosted by the Seddonville Hotel, the most successful in recent years.

For the second time, Lloyd Jones of Westport gets his name on the heaviest fish trophy, Jack Zielenski displays his two snapper at the weigh-in, including the 4.66kg prize winner.

Double Header

Nothing like a double-header to get the blood up.

We were fishing off the Coromandel near Whitianga, when we spotted a school of kahawai. I quickly rigged up my trout rod with a pink and white Grim Reaper while my brother in-law, Bernard, steered the boat around the edge of the feeding fish. I quickly hooked up and had a great battle with a kingfish, but it was under the legal limit.

Later, when we were catching the odd snapper off the Alderman, we spotted kingfish following the fish up.

When I went to tie a pencil lure onto my line to try and catch another one, Bernard told me to use a blue Inchiku jig he reckoned was much better. I dropped it down and started to reel it in well before it reached the bottom and immediately hooked up. Three times doing

this and I’d landed three kingfish in a row.

That was the good news but unfortunately they were not takers, but one of the kingfish that followed them up was. It took longer to get my second hook up and what was on the end of my line was certainly twice the size of what I’d hooked before. That was the

good news. The bad news was I hadn’t hooked the big one. I had two fish on my jig and we had to return both of them.

I had to have a set of these Inchiku jigs after this incredible experience to try off my kayak and bought a set when I returned home.

ungary stretched ahead like a frozen ocean. A sea of yellow sunflowers bordered by a foamy green/yellow swathe of maize.

The troughs and gullies dividing the arable hinterland were choked with trees and tangles of rambling blackberry whose succulent fruits highlighted the region’s rich wild tapestry.

Tiny butterflies distracted the unfocused and a distant ridge-line stalled the march of a forest

that stretched 40 kilometres to the east. In it roamed monstrous fallow bucks and huge reds with enormous racks.

A small but no lesser game animal erupted from the row next to the one we were stalking along, but stopped short, unsure of what had spooked it.

Roland froze but allowed a smile to light his face. A tiny female deer the size of a dog stepped from the sunflowers into a clearing, and fed into the open.

“Shooter!” my guide whispered, so I cocked the rifle.

“What the hell bloody are you doing, Crimpy?” he shot at me in tangled English.

“You said it was a shooter!”

“Yes, ‘Suta’ - female deer - don’t shoot!”

Then a minute later another deer followed the first.

“Shooter, Crimpy!”

I did nothing, and then I caught Roland’s wild eyes.

“Shooter, Crimpy… it is nice roebuck - shoot!”

And so I did, quickly and off the sticks, and that was my introduction to roebuck hunting in Europe. Daniel and I were an hour into our first of four days hunting with our PH, Roland Koller, and I knew I was in for a magic week.

Notwithstanding language idiosyncracies, I already had a very respectable representative buck on the ground but more importantly, Roland and I had gelled. He’s very skilled, passionate and knowledgeable, and goes to incredible lengths to give his clients the best possible hunts. On top of that, he’s got a wicked sense of humour that saw the pair of us sparring all week.

“You not like my rifle, Crimpy?”

“Eh?” “Your head bleeding - why you head-butt my rifle?” he mocked the fact that an experienced hunter could still fall victim of the ‘magnum eyebrow’!

We’d seen numerous deer by the time I put my first buck on the ground, including a potential trophy that had good height, mass and space between the antlers. With the morning ebbing, our focus now was to look for a buck for Daniel, which he ultimately took after a thrilling stalk (his story www. thefishingpaper.co.nz online issue 108). That evening, I returned and stalked the buck with potential: using maize as camouflage, I was able to sneak within 60m of it right on dusk.

I was using Swarovski optics and the animal was crisp against the gloom, but the buck’s tiny antlers melded with a thin black band of vegetation in the distance, so I couldn’t make out any detail. Unless there could be 100% certainty, there would be no trigger squeeze. The little buck was alert, motionless and we were both locked in a frozen embrace. I yielded first, darkness robbing me of the chance to take him.

INTERNATIONAL However, any good thriller would be incomplete without its femme fatale and, in my case, the seductress who led me astray was Diana, the goddess of hunting. After a day of abysmal shooting, all I could think to say was, “Now what did I do to upset that woman?”

Roland and I had executed a tortuous stalk in the rain to put us within 50m of the buck with potential, only for me to duff the shot.

Roland then called in a nice rutting buck from 400m, which I clean missed at 80m and then again at 30m. I was shooting like a teenager on my first date.

“In Hungary we have a saying,” said Roland, “that the luck of the hunter depends on the goodness of his heart!”

Later, Roland slid the four-wheel-drive off a flat 400 acre field into a swamp.

“In New Zealand we have a saying,” I said.

“If you drive like a granny - be man enough to wear a dress!”

The following morning I requested that we first go to a quiet spot away from the hunt, where I practiced dry-firing from the sticks until I my confidence returned. Diana seemed in a better mood.

Then we hunted again, but with disappointment at every turn; the big bucks had vanished.

“In Hungary we have a saying,” muttered Roland. “If your sword is short, lengthen it with a step!”

The going was certainly getting tough.

“Holy shit,” Roland exclaimed minutes later, swinging his Swarovski binoculars to his face. My heart skipped a beat. “Nah… just a stick!”

But then he looked past the stick and let out a low whistle: “We now hunt quickly, Crimpy!”

A field of half-harvested wheat stretched golden in the sunlight and above a sea of uncut ears, a buck’s head popped up. That

courtesy of bitch, Diana, caused my palms to sweat and heart to quicken.

Daniel and I slipped from the car, hunched over and fell into line behind Roland, who was making for the cover.

“He is moving off to bed,” Roland hissed, “We go fast and quietly.”

The stalk was everything I could wish for: full of uncertainty, tension, suspense, anxiety and drama. I wanted this buck so bad I willed luck to be on my side and now stared only at my feet, desperately steeling myself against the rising buck fever. Then, with 80m separating us from the buck, Roland uttered words that added seasoning to the hunt: “That’s it - I can’t get you any closer. One more step and he’s gone.”

The buck was staring back at us with ears pricked - poised. His thick antlers stuck up way above the ears. He was what I’d come for and now it came down pulling off the most difficult of shots.

“He’s big, Crimpy. If you are confident take him!”

Only the head and part of the neck were visible above the wheat and, on an animal that only weighs 25-30kg, that is a tiny target. I have never felt less confident.

Settling on the sticks, I breathed out and gave in completely to the seductive charm of my femme fatale. The rifle barked loudly… and Diana finally smiled!

We all bathed in the euphoria of the afterhunt: there were handshakes, hugs, photos taken, homage paid to the great game animal, and the autopsy. This hunt certainly measured up because it contained the three elements that must always be present: difficulty, uncertainty and effort.

As Roland succinctly put it: “In Hungary we have a saying - if you want to see a rainbow, you must first sit through the rain!”

Ian and Kathy Jaques operate Australian Hunting Consultants and specialise in affordable local and European hunts for a variety of game species. It’s a long way to travel to the Northern Hemisphere and expensive to hunt just one trophy, so the Jaques, in conjunction with Roland, tailored an affordable roebuck package that allowed antipodean hunters to take four representative heads. Booking and pre-hunt planning is done through the Jaques, who have hunted Europe and therefore can offer a firsthand perspective and answer any of your questions.

Roland has hunted throughout the world, including New Zealand, so understands our hunting style. Europeans favour hunting from stands but Roland knew I’d want to stalk my game, so chose an area that would challenge and delight me. A medal-class trophy was not a priority because our hunt was to incorporate Daniel’s first deer, so the overall experience was more important than numbers on a score sheet. The area comprised 6,000ha of undulating arable land with deer scattered in pockets, so the method of hunt was essentially drive, sight and stalk.

Early starts were a prerequisite to success, which meant there was little time between the midnight bedtime and 4.00am rise: you are there to hunt and Roland gives your money’s worth! Many guides finish the hunt by nine but Roland keeps working until around midday and then will have you back on the march by five. While evenings are productive for deer stalking in New Zealand, Roland tags mornings as more productive for roebuck, with 70% of animals taken then.

Swarovski - Through the Eyes of the Hawk

urope has the reputation for leading the world in quality optics and, certainly, the stable of excellence courts some pretty prestigious runners: Swarovski, Zeiss and Leica roll easily off the tongue.

Technology advances in recent years have been so dramatic some argue that the cutting edge is now nano-thin, and that comparing the elite brands is as precise an art as betting on the horses. The layperson may well struggle to differentiate quality and precision at the high end of the market but, as I discovered on a recent trip to Austria, the optics industry is serious about advancing technology even further.

Swarovski Optik is a brand embraced by Kiwi hunters and is seen by many as the epitome of quality hunting gear. Part of this can be put down to the consistent marketing and branding of Swarovski by Paul & Jenny Clark of New Zealand Ammunition, distributors of Swarovski, but another reality is that there is a connection between Swarovski and New Zealand that helps make their gear a perfect fit for our conditions.

This will become clear shortly. Before you can appreciate the technology, it helps to understand the soul of Swarovski.

Swarovski Optik is a major global company, having representation in 84 countries, but it is not a faceless corporation spewing product from one of the world’s large homogenised cities. The family owned enterprise is headquartered in Absam, Tyrol, a beautiful little town at the foot of the Austrian Alps with a population of about 7,000, and it is an apple that hasn’t fallen far from the tree.

The seed for Swarovski’s entrepreneurial future was sown in1895 when Daniel Swarovski invented the world’s first electric grinding machine for jewellery stones. Also enduring today is the familial ties and the company’s commitment to good stewardship in order to fulfil its obligation to grow a prosperous and socially responsible company for future Swarovski descendants. Current chairwoman of the executive board and great-granddaughter of Wilhelm, Carina Schiestl-Swarovski, sees the future as being inextricably linked to the past and describes her great-grandfather as an interesting, and perhaps visionary, man. He was a great lover

of nature who retreated into the surrounding mountains to work on new ideas, visions and projects.

“One of his favourite spots was the imposing Habicht Mountain in the Stubai Alps, where he was absolutely fascinated by the majestic hawks, renowned for their extremely powerful vision.”

So, when Swarovski Optik was looking for a company crest 30-years-ago, it was fitting and symbolic to adopt the hawk.

“It was an obvious choice,” she says. “On the one hand it represents our deep roots in Tyrol and on the other, the precision Swarovski Optik is aiming for with its long-range optical products.”

While quality control at the factory is paramount, Richard says that if any flaws are going to be detected in the field, it will be in New Zealand. Returns for repairs are rare - in the fraction of a percent of sales - but he says the repair department are in awe of anything that comes back from New Zealand, because it generally looks twice as old as it is - testimony to the way we hunt.

Another reason Swarovski rate New Zealand so highly is because of the numbers of us who hunt as a percentage of the population.

“It would be at least ten times that of Austria, for example, and much more than some other countries!”

Hunting in New Zealand is still more accessible for the average hunter than many places, which is another reason Swarovski take our feedback seriously; hunting products and accessories get frequent and repeated use, which is perfect for monitoring and assessment.

“Technology is so advanced and there are so many points that

influence optics: edge to edge sharpness, field of view, contrast, colour fidelity, magnification, lens coating, and - the hot one currently - light transmission,” says Richard.

However, in the world of high specs there are compromises. For example; spec sheets often talk of light transmission in the realm of 91-95% or more, but with light transmission there is a trade-off.

“Let’s say you are going for maximum transmission so you can hunt the edge of darkness. the trade off is going to be colour fidelity,” he says. “The trueness of colour in some spectrums will be weaker or compromised.”

He also argues that not all hunters are created equal.

“Hunters have different needs, aspirations and desires, and not everyone can differentiate differences in quality at the top end of the spectrum,” Richard says.

“Optics then, need to cater to many needs and it is Swarovski Optik’s aim to produce the best overall package to suit hunters’ requirements!”

Over the Ridge into the Waitellu

“Daryl, do you copy?”

“Yeah, gotcha Tom.” “I’ve just spotted two more deer!”

The hunt had suddenly picked up a notch and entered a new dimension.

I had just finished hacking up the stag that had fallen into a nasty chute amongst the bluff and was precariously wedged above an unappealing drop-off. I’d tried but failed to gut it, and only just managed to ‘butcher’ the hind legs and back steaks before gravity quashed my belief that all that gym training had given me an advantage. The hollow thumps of leather and flailing gut-bag receded into a cloud of dust below as I pondered how to extricate myself from the shattered precipitous rock face, with extra weight on my shoulders.

Once on the spur proper, I diverted several rivulets of sweat and blinked the focus back into my eyes. Even without the Swarovski binos I could see the two animals way below on the valley floor; their red summer coats betraying them as the last of the sun’s rays held

“Yeah, I can see them Tom,” I whispered into the hand-held radio, “I’ll shadow you down so I don’t stuff up your stalk.”

Tom eventually lost sight of the deer as he descended so I halted halfway down and became his eyes.

“They have just stood up and started feeding,” I keyed into the radio in low tones. “Now they have stepped out of sight under the face of the hill.”

Tom too disappeared, but over the same face and above the deer.

I sat back and waited - the soothing balm of an alpine evening reminding me how good it was to be back in the mountains.

The shot and what happened next didn’t surprise me because Tom has always been an excellent hunter. The radio crackled and he affirmed that we had another for the pot, so I shouldered my pack and took two steps before stopping abruptly and dropping back to the ground; another deer had appeared below me. A mate to the one Tom had shot? It was definitely agitated and I should have shot it when it stopped to look back. However, a series of bumbles on my part gave it a reprieve. I shrugged my shoulders and was about to continue my descent when I suddenly felt the urge to talk to Tom again.

“I can see four more deer down river - I’m going to have a crack at them!”

“Don’t be too greedy!”

It was now a race against shooting light, so I bolted toward the riverbed but even before I got there, I knew it was futile; the ink of night bleeds quickly onto the hunter’s blotting paper. I was thwarted by the hands of time, so I left them for morning and turned toward camp, but that’s as far as I got. I couldn’t believe my eyes: the murky form of three deer were playfully making their way toward me, but it was too dark to shoot... until I lifted the Swarovski Z6 to my eye. Three yearling hinds sprung into crisp relief and this time there was no bumbling. I snuggled the stock into my shoulder and rolled forward into the daypack so that I was locked in position for a downhill shot. Crosshairs settled. Breathe out. Squeeze at the bottom of the breath. Darkness closed around the dying echo of the shot.

The hunt still had two days to run but with three meat animals secured on the first evening, the rifles were stowed and replaced with cameras. The success of this hunt hinged on three factors: being in the right place at the right time, Tom’s and my stalking ability, and, to a very large degree, input from the boys at Ridge Air. Aaron and Willy are both experienced hunters who know their patch, which is relatively under-utilised so holds good animal numbers.

Plus, we were hunting the shoulder season when many hunters are doing other things, so the deer weren’t spooked.

Obviously, I’d like to keep the Waitellu Headwaters a secret but if you give Ridge Air a call, I’m sure Willy or Aaron will spill the beans.

Resolution

It’s half an hour into 2015 and I’ve yet to come up with my annual New Year’s resolution. Last year’s little gem was ‘do epic shit’ - I did. 2014 was remarkable in every respect but I doubt I can use the same resolution twice. Or can I? Double-epic. Is that too greedy?

Well okay, you can call me Epic McGreedy ‘cos here I am, out in the wilds of Marlborough, climbing out of my sleeping bag and into my hunting gear right now. Right now, 12.30am, 1 January.

Mr Moon is my midnight friend, he and my ink black shadow.

He lights my way as I stealthily venture into the dark. He plays tag with a cloud but there is light aplenty to distinguish between a thistle and a hare, a rock and a paddock rooter. It’s them I’m after - paddock rooters - cow pat flippers, clover munchers, sneaky grunters, who are hard to find by light of day.

The wind is not my friend. It is my enemy. A fickle foe who sides with me one moment, kisses the back of my neck the next.

Grunters! To my left, black shapes aplenty. By naked eye I can distinguish two mobs, feeding side by side, silently scoffing dewy green grass. Epic shit. There’s pigs everywhere, no piglets, all eaters.

Wait, there’s more. I flick on the torch and its beam reveals several more adult pigs grazing with a couple of velvet stags.

Big red stags with trophy antlers, heads down and munching harmoniously with their feral friends.

The pig I eyeball is bigger than its mates, its grey, with fresh wallow mud and it faces towards me. I put the crosshairs of the rifle scope on its forehead - safety off and my finger gently on the trigger - but I don’t shoot. I want to see it side on. Want to know it’s a boar - not to kill an in-pig sow, or one with mammaries like Katy Perry. Piggy takes another step towards me, then another. Then it raises its head, sniffs the shifty wind and ‘adios!’

There is an explosion of pigs and deer, helter-skelter every which way. Hoffing, scoffing, tails up and streaking into the night.

Fences ping and twang, cattle bellow, calves answer. I never did see if the muddy pig was Matey or Katy.

I carry on, ever hopeful.

Far to my right, out amongst long grass, manuka and rocks, my torch beam sweeps over a black back. A steady eddy blows from it to me. A steady eddy which permits me to go on, undetected as I crest a small ridge, cross a creek and carefully close the gap between that black back and I. - continued on next page.

He pauses for a second, squints directly into the beam of light, tests the breeze, listens intently. Then, sensing no peril, he resumes cropping clover.

I am close. I can hear the grass being plucked, hear the hungry chomping. I can see every detail of his head through my scope.

The slight reflection of his eye, the hairy fringe on his ear, the well-ground tusk jutting from his jaw. He dies an instant death, stress free and with his tummy full in the calm of a starry summer’s night.

I gut and prep the boar then prop him on a rock to collect in daylight hours. As I stroll back down the paddock my mind returns to that unresolved New Year’s resolution. Give more?

I’m a blood donor, an organ donor and a body donor. I have no more of me to give. Do more? Amongst other things I’m a wife, a mother, a friend, a worker, a community volunteer, my hours are all taken. Do double epic? Perhaps.

As I pass the dozen dew trails where the fine fat eating pigs had skedaddled into the wild black yonder it dawns on me this was the moment which had defined my night, my hunt, my 2015 resolution. It had seemed, just then, everything had turned to custard but I had been resolute. I only had to push on a little further, ‘to have fixedness of purpose’ and eventually I would find my happy place. Keep calm and carry on.

An Experience to Treasure

My fiancé, Owen, and I didn’t know what to expect.

We had read the testimonials on the Fairmead Hunting Experience and enjoyed looking at the photos. Owen, an experienced hunter, said we didn’t have to take a thing - just a change of clothes.

We knew we were near when we saw a couple of deer grazing in the hills. The land was not flat: high hills, gully’s, bush and little did I know that was going to later burn a memory in my head.

We were warmly greeted

by Richard but alas no Barb; she was enjoying a weekend away with Bruce...

Springsteen! Totora Ridge hut was amazing: all the collectible items reminded us of home, and it had a long drop!

Richard casually asked if we would like to go for a walk. I stayed behind Owen and Richard, kept very quiet and poked my head over a bank to see a young deer, then another and another.

I froze, they froze and I learned quickly I was going to be playing freeze and have staring competitions all weekend.

Then to see the BIG BOYS… takes words away from me.

Wow, I was so happy for Owen and could see and feel the excitement begin to build.

I had heard over the years how hard hunting can be, to go on trips without seeing a deer, sometimes hearing them, sometimes not. Within 30 minutes we saw more and more groups of deer and stags, and Owen had spotted the one that would be coming home with us.

Owen didn’t sleep much that night but we were up early for a quick breakfast then away on daylight.

Again, we saw lots of deer and stags. Owen and Richard were well ahead of me and walked straight past a stag sitting in the reeds. I was so far back, trying to yell with a whisper and got it on video.

Looking back, I so wish they shot that one.

We then spent many hours going up and down very steep mountains - to me.

Owen and Richard casually walked through them while I was clinging to the land like an opossum to a tree, but I was really loving it!

Nek minit the hunt changed pace. Owen dropped to the ground and… Boom! Just like that, the hunt was over. We had found our prize - a nice management buck.

Owen said Richard is a great hunter and skilled stalker who put him onto many shootable stags. I was so impressed with his ethics; he’s still so strong, fit and yet humble and happy to share his knowledge with others.

Capsize! How To Deal With It – Part 1 Kayaks will capsize. The more prepared you are the better the outcome will be. Here are steps to follow should you capsize your fishing kayak.

Keep Hold On Your Gear The most important thing to make sure you do when you capsize is to keep all your gear together. Keep a hold of your paddle as you tip over. If you are fishing, then you may have a paddle leash attached to your paddle and that will keep your paddle located. Otherwise, keep a grip on it with one hand. As you surface you want to reach out and grab your kayak with your free hand. If there is some wind, it will blow your kayak away from you. And if the wind is strong enough, it will blow the kayak faster than you can swim after it. Make keeping a grip on your kayak a habit. Have a look at your own kayak and see what you can hold onto. The side carry handles and straps on your seat are two places that work well.

Right The Kayak The simplest way to ‘flip’ the kayak up the right way, is to reach underneath your boat and grab the carry handle on the far side of your kayak (most but not all kayaks have carry handles on the side of the kayak). Your other hand will hold the carry handle closest to you.

You can place your paddle between you and your kayak so that it does not drift away. When you right the kayak, you need to do so in a swift motion. Push the closest carry handle up and away from you while you pull the far away one towards you. This will hopefully turn the kayak up the correct way.

Righting The kayak – Backup Plan Some wide and/or heavy kayaks, as well as those that have a lot of gear on them, may not easily flip using the above method. If this is the case, try reaching over the top of the kayak and grab onto the carry handle, or another suitable surface. Pull up and towards you and hopefully the kayak will begin to turn ‘right-side-up’.

And if that will not work, plan ‘C’ hopefully will. For plan ‘C’ you need a length of cord or webbing with a carabiner (or similar) on one end. You can clip this onto the carry handle on one side of the kayak and then swim to the other side of the kayak. Reach over, grab the strap and lean back and pull the kayak over the right way.

One weekend we headed to Port Jackson, Coromandel, but camped at Stoney Beach due to a strong westerly. The fishing was slow but when you did get one it was not small.

We stuck close inshore and didn’t get out to the Barrier because of the weather.

All up we got one kingi and about a dozen snapper, although a few rods were broken and gear smashed by unseen monsters. The snapper

landed ranged from 3lb up to 15lb, so we all ended up with a feed and plenty of meat for the smoker.

Occasionally I wonder at the stupidity and ignorance of some.

Poppa Mike and I were fishing some years back, when a nasty late afternoon wind prompted us to head for shelter.

We noticed a small runabout in trouble amongst some jagged rocks and two young children clinging to the cliff behind. One bloke was in the water trying to hold the boat from being battered to bits, while another had the inboard engine cover up and was desperately trying to restart the engine by pouring petrol down the carburetor.

There was no evidence of lifejackets and the boat looked as scruffy as the men. They had no radio or other safety gear – not even an oar for fending off rocks. The situation looked pretty grim and with sea conditions building, would only become more perilous. I threw them a towline while Mike skilfully manoeuvred his large launch so as to shelter the stricken boat and its occupants from the wind and chop. This relative calm allowed them to get the children aboard without mishap and we were then able to tow them off the rocks and back to their base some distance away.

As we cast off the towline, they headed for shore without one word of thanks or acknowledgement. Mike and I were dumbfounded. But wait ... the story gets worse.

Next morning, we were again out fishing, when round the corner comes the very boat, the motor now purring happily and pushing the boat upwards of 30 miles per hour. They headed straight for us, prompting Mike and I to think that they might be going to pass over a few beers as a thank you.

Silly us. The boat sped on, all noise and spray as it passed within a few feet of us. The huge wake caught us by surprise,

rocking our launch so violently that it knocked us both off our feet. Not one wave, not even a glance in our direction. We both just shook our heads as we regathered ourselves and checked our lines once more.

That skipper did everything wrong, from basic safety through to common courtesy. It does serve as a reminder that even when little things do go wrong at sea, the consequences could be deadly. It is a good idea to make a waterproof checklist, perhaps on a stiff strip of plastic, that remains on the boat and is religiously checked off before you head out. Important things can be removed, borrowed or stolen between trips, making a 10 minute pre-trip check a good insurance policy.

Things to include on your list might be: life jackets, torch, flares, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, radio, oars, bailer, EPIRB, warm clothing, sea anchor, boat hook, oil, petrol, food, cell phone and tow rope. Can you think of any others to include?

While it is one of the fun things we do as a family, it never ceases to amaze me how hazardous it can be: Fish hooks - this is when you discover that you left the pliers at home.

Sharp knives - Wow, a knife can be used for a variety of jobs, but… where are the plasters, who used the last one?

Where are scissors?

Rough seas - shall I boil the kettle? Mum, I need to go to the toilet!

Set-lining - 25 hooks at one time, mum driving the boat into the wind to hold it steady, then backing over the line, a ball of spiny dogs, dad not wearing his glasses and all children running to the side of the boat to see what is on the line!

Scalloping - 100m of rope on the deck, all children cowering in the bow while dad contends with rope.

Back deck full of gear - no shoes and stubbed toes.

Children casting lures - say no more!

Pulling up the anchor - thankfully we have an electric winch now.

Going ashore to get the trailer - hanging off the side of the boat while it is moving and trying to time the jump to shore before the prop hits the sand.

Towing the boat to the Sounds - trailer brakes catch fire - does the fire extinguisher still work, where did we store that?

These things are quickly forgotten when fish are caught but all have the potential to cause injury. Things happen when you least expect it and miles away from help, so it’s important to be prepared with a good first aid kit.

• First aid handbook • Hypothermic blanket for cold waters Store your kit in a waterproof container and place in a handy location in the boat. Maintain a regular check of supplies: Who used the last? - isn’t fun fishing.

Take a minute to learn how to check your EPIRB, and consider the benefits of upgrading to a GPS equipped EPIRB. A crucial piece of safety equipment to have on a boat is an EPIRB. In an emergency it may be the only means by which to contact authorities and instrumental in you being saved.

Therefore, it is very important that it is maintained and tested to ensure it works when you really need it. Check the expiry date, which is etched into the EPIRB and should not be confused with your AMSA registration sticker.

If your EPIRB has expired, consider the benefits of upgrading to a GPS equipped model. These give rescue authorities an accurate location within minutes; without GPS technology delay could be hours. GPS technology gives greater accuracy too, creating a search area about the size of a football field instead of the whopping 5km radius of non GPS EPIRBS. Nelson City Council, Maritime New Zealand and government take safe boating very seriously. Whilst the machinations of government may move slowly, they eventually arrive at a destination that we voters entrust them to. So it is with infringements and the power for the Harbour Master’s staff to write a ticket to a punitive value when we witness something stupid or reckless occurring, or someone simply breaking the rules.

For example, we consider operating a vessel in a manner as to endanger lives a serious offence. Speeding, particularly within a marina, within 50m of another vessel or swimmer, or within 200m of the shore, is a serious offence. If you do not wish to have your day spoiled, don’t speed in the aforementioned circumstances, as it could also be described as operating a vessel in a manner as to endanger lives.

Failure to carry an appropriate PFD (Personal Floatation Device) for each person on board is a serious offence, especially if your lifejacket is not appropriate for a child. Are you aware that a PFD should also be carried when operating a paddleboard outside of the surf?

Fresh Bait 101 Some people swear by pilchards. Others by squid bait, octopus or eel. My uncle swore by fresh brown trout. More exotic baits that I have used are salmon bellies: it is wasteful to eat, cook or skin the salmon. Snapper can’t get enough unskinned, unsmoked and uncooked salmon – full of oil. Others recommend crayfish or paua for bait, but I have not tried these.

Once, when I had nothing better to do on a hot summer’s day, I opened some cockles and sun-dried them. I then placed them in a glass jar with plenty of salt, put them in my boat and promptly forgot about them for several weeks. When I eventually discovered them again they were firm and stayed on the hook so I tried them for bait. They were much loved by tarakihi. Try them sometime.

However, the most consistently good bait is freshly netted herring (yellow eyed mullet) or garfish (piper). I inherited my uncle’s bait net, which is now 50-years-old and has caught tons of these by drag netting. Current regulations specify a minimum mesh size of 25mm. As this net was made well before metric measurements, it has a 1 ¼ inch mesh. Net mesh is measured across one ‘gap’ by parting opposite corners of a mesh. Thus a 100mm mesh size (the usual size for most fish species) will have both a mesh height and breadth of 50mm. There are limitations on drag nets in the Fisheries Regulations. Nets must not exceed 40 metres in length and total warp length must not exceed 200 metres.

Netting for bait is most effective at low tide, or shortly thereafter, on an incoming tide.

My bait net is made of braid with ropes top and bottom. Corks on the top rope are being replaced as they disintegrate by plastic floats and lead along the bottom rope. At each end of the net are poles to hold the net open and a rope is attached to each end. The assistant holds the end of the rope while the rower rows the net in the dinghy out to sea. When all of the rope is out, the rower turns the dinghy and rows the net out parallel to the beach, then back to the beach while paying out the second rope. If the ropes and the net have been properly run into the dinghy, they will set without being touched by the rower. Once back on the beach, both ropes are pulled to bring in the net.

Method: 1) Peter and John running the net into the boat. The net is then rowed out with a rope to shore at each end.

Herring needs to be fresh. It gets too soft after a day or so and if frozen, becomes as soft as frozen pilchards and lasts for only one fish bite. Larger herring should be filleted and scaled then folded over double (cut the flesh part way through in the middle of the fillet) with the skin on the inside, then put it on the hook. Small herring have their head and tail cut off then attached to the hook with the hook point passed twice though the fish, either side of the backbone.

The net can be set without a boat or ropes by pulling it out to sea, but this task is difficult when you get to chest depth in the water, and it is not a pleasant task in colder months.

Nets require little care other than mending holes but should not be left in the sunshine as this will weaken the net and lead to breakages. Sometimes unwanted objects are caught in the net – sticks or sea lettuce, particularly after very high tides and storms.

Sometimes other by-catch is caught: puffer fish, stargazers, spotties, small snapper and kahawai. If the net passes close to a seaweed covered rock, seahorses may be caught. I have netted rays at times and these can make net retrieval difficult if they are

Marlborough Marine Futures Project “Good involvement by recreational and commercial fishers will be the deciding factor in the success of the Marlborough Marine Futures project,” says Eric Jorgensen, who chairs Marlborough Sounds Integrated Management Trust. The project was launched in December by Kaikoura MP, Stuart Smith, and Marlborough District Councillor, Trevor Hook.

“This Government is highly supportive of stakeholders finding solutions that work in their local environment. Kaikoura showed what could be done and the Government got behind that consensus and enacted special legislation to implement what the community had agreed to. We all know the Marlborough Sounds is bigger and more complex, but if this can be done anywhere it can be done here. I applaud the hard work of the Marlborough Sounds Integrated Management Trust and their courage to kick things off. I will be watching progress with interest and help where I am able,” Stuart

Smith said, welcoming the initiative.

Eric Jorgensen Chair of the Marlborough Sounds Integrated Management Trust said: “Our community is ready to be a testing ground for better ways of protecting the marine environment. Dr Kay Booth said the management issues in the Marlborough Sounds were “wicked” and “messy” and that has certainly been our experience.”

“Our first public forum will be held on 8 March. We want to have the community choose the Stakeholder Working Group members and we have set 22 March for that to happen. There is a lot going on already and the community voice needs to be heard as soon as possible,” he said.

A comprehensive tome with a cover and title encouraging the browser to look inside. As I did, I was immediately struck by the array of photographs, a wonderful collection representing much of New Zealand’s geography, much about those who love the outdoors and all nature offers.

The key focus is on the many wildlife sanctuaries, in all their various forms and locations, and the battle against the introduced predators that threaten so many of our native species. Rats, mice, cats, possums, hedgehogs, stoats, ferrets, weasels and humans, have had a huge impact to the stage some species are gone forever, others on the endangered list. Through the efforts of many, the long battle to halt this destruction is slowly being turned around. Chapter two titled Fighting Back is a very revealing, a mini historical journey.

Chapter by chapter the authors report on the wide range of sanctuaries – the “lifeboat” island sanctuaries, fenced sanctuaries, kiwi sanctuaries, community sanctuaries, as well as the many organisations, community volunteers and individuals who have made it happen. A strong feature is the role of the Department of Conservation in leading many of these initiatives and supporting the efforts of the many conservation groups. The photograph of a white kiwi at Pukaha, Mt Bruce Sanctuary, epitomises this link The descriptions of the efforts, the planning, the tools and the cunning, makes for fascinating reading. So many sanctuaries I never knew existed in places unknown to most readers. Just flicking slowly through the book takes you on a wonderful trip round our country. The final photograph on the back cover of a banded rifleman being released at Boundary Stream proved a clincher for me. If you can find Boundary Stream - clue, northern Hawke’s Bay - try to do the

walkway, as I did with classes of children 30 years ago.

This book is an eye opener – hopefully opening the eyes of every New Zealander and overseas visitor alike. A treasure to adorn every household, with young children growing up in our beautiful country and one, which recognises the wonderful efforts of those who have gone before.

Introduction to Softbaiting the Canals

The hydro canals around Twizel produce some of the largest brown and rainbow trout in the world, many world record fish.

Despite the abundance of fish, the majority fishing the canals catch very few. The standard canal fishing rig seems to be a cheap spin set with heavy nylon, running rig with a float just before the hook and pre-cooked supermarket shrimp threaded onto the hook. The rig is cast into the current and the rod propped up while the angler patiently waits for something to happen.

While this technique will catch the odd fish, a more finetuned method is required for consistent results. These canals are virtually tailor-made for softbaiting, when fished properly, can achieve very impressive results. During two afternoons recently, I landed no fewer than 20 trout and salmon, with the majority of these being well over 10lb. I only witnessed two other fish landed by the scores of bait fishermen along the banks while there, highlighting just how effective softbaits are. Specialised gear, technique and finesse go a long way towards success.

The Gear Lighter is generally better. A long 7ft+ carbon fibre rod with a soft, sensitive tip to keep in touch with the lure will detect even the softest bites. Couple this with a lightweight spin reel with a smooth drag, the Okuma RTX 25. Made with carbon fibre body to further reduce weight, it’s ideal for the canals.

Use at least 150m of very light braid mainline of 6-8lb. This will cast further, give a higher sink rate and be more sensitive. To this, join 1.2m of 8-10lb fluorocarbon leader, using a yucatan knot or

back-to-back uni knots. It is more expensive but far tougher than nylon and much harder to see underwater.

Have a range of jig-heads to cover varying flow rates and conditions - 1/32oz to 1/4oz. You should settle on a weight that lets you bounce the lure along the bottom. Lures from 5-9cm are ideal. Look for lures with a lot of action that will entice bites from fish on slow days. While some swear by bright colours, I personally prefer more natural patterns and I have been having a great deal of success with a Savage Gear lure in a perch pattern.

The Technique It is important to keep the lure in the right part of the water column so varying the weight of the jig-head is critical. Cast upstream, counting 5-10 seconds to allow the lure to sink, before retrieving it slowly, while imparting small rod twitches to add extra action. Once the lure swings too far downstream and lifts off the bottom, retrieve the remaining line and re-cast. I found by walking downstream as I was retrieving the lure also allowed more time in the strike zone, accounting for several large fish.

the majority. After our usual array of tangles it was set and off we went to find some fish. Immediately we came across a work up, slow jigs on and fishing. Twenty minutes later: five kahawai landed, two kept, enough for the smoker, three released.

Then I got a heavy take mid-water. “Big kahawai,” I tell Jacob, knowing the feel of every fish bite at 20 metres deep.

It came to the surface just like a kahawai, but I see a flash of red - it was a bloody good snapper, just as I had predicted! After a six-minute fight we landed a 10lb fish. I let out the usual war cry but Jacob’s first words were, “Let’s get him back in the water Dad, it’s a great breeding fish!”

What?

He had a point and I thought twice about keeping the fish but, being a little old school, it was quickly dispatched. Then I got the full explanation why I should have released the fish and all about Matt Watson’s fish releasing techniques. Hmm, it was time to check the longline.

Hook one, tangle and a doggie, then empty hooks until about six from the end. A nice 6lb snapper still fighting fit. Before I could ask Jacob what we should do with it, he unhooked the fish and it was over the side and swimming away. Then another slightly bigger snapper: same thing, released to fight another day.

With a nice snapper and a couple of kahawai for the smoker, we were very happy boys but what felt best was having released two very healthy fish to breed and fight another day. From an early age I have taught Jacob to respect the fish he catches, even releasing herrings and spotties from the wharf and not let them flounder around until they die! He makes me very proud the way he considers the fish and the future fishers, before he kills any fish. Jacob gives me hope there will be plenty of fish for everyone to catch long after I have retired my rods and reels.

My son Jacob, 12, and I are mad keen fisherman. For me it has been 40 years and Jacob as long as he has been able to hold a rod. It really doesn’t matter what Jacob is fishing for, snapper, kingies, or even sprats. Of course, he does love to catch big fish - don’t we all?

After accounts of big hauls of early season snapper: 20, even up to 30 fish in a day, we set out optimistically from the Nelson ramp at 5.30am. With dark clouds hovering above and a 25km/h wind whipping around, our optimism quickly waned, especially when a dozen boats were already heading home.

1080 and Science Dear Ed, Good on the two letter writers in your January issue, Ron Eddy and ‘John’. John is correct DoC is destroying the clean, green image with their poison programme.

Environment Minister Nick Smith in his ‘Battle for the Birds’ saturation of public lands with 1080 is making a bad joke about his cabinet portfolio.

Ron Eddy is really on the button about the murky standard of science. ‘Paid science’ is being used - DoC commissions Landcare Research to do a study.

Of course Landcare come up with the conclusion DoC wants because they (Landcare) want more work.

Scientist Mike Meads in the mid1990s did work on the effects of aerial 1080 on a forest and he warned the forest ecosystem was being threatened by the toxin killing organisms vital to the decomposition of forest litter.

Meads work was unacceptable to DoC and he was ‘dumped’.

So was another scientist.

Many very qualified scientists have to go overseas to carry out open ended studies - it is my belief the vast majority of paid work in New Zealand (mainly GOVT financed) asks for a set pre-decided conclusion.

The whole system of ‘paid science’ is not credible or accepted ‘as normal practice’ outside New Zealand.

DoC never reply to criticism by quoting an actual peer reviewed study to back up their quotes, only saying there has been dozens of studies that prove their point. One does realise that when challenged, DoC will never put up the actual research to back their argument because it does not exist and they, in their arrogant way, assume we believe what they say without question!

As for Landcare Research quoting a Forest and Bird page, well, we

Dear Ed, Once again quad bikes are in the media, with WorkSafe dishing out large fines and a government agency recommending that no person under 16 be allowed on one.

This has the potential to limit the outdoor experience for hundreds of children and remove a generation from being able to go fishing or hunting.

Instead of the PC mob hitting everyone with a sledge hammer, concentrate on where the issue is: lack of parental supervision combined with alcohol! Leave us responsible parents/grandparents to give our children and grandchildren that outdoor experience, not every one wants to be an overweight couch potato stuck on a play station.

Daft Rule Needs Filleting Dear Ed, About three years ago I wrote to you suggesting that the requirement not to fillet fish at sea leads to potential spoiling and wastage of fish, as well as inconvenience, mess and added work at the end of a long hot day, and that keeping the frames for measurement might help this problem. I am talking mainly about cod here. The fillets would also have to be available for inspection, and numbers tally, of course.

Compliance Officer Ian Bright replied to the effect that this approach would lead to fishers evading the regulations. I did not see then, and cannot see now why this should be so.

Chris Wilson Picton Ed replies: The problem with regulations is that they hamper the law-abiding in order to target the few ratbags who cheat the system, and the rest of us. This is exacerbated when you have a poor management regime put in place, as we do in the Marlborough Sounds. I would suggest far more damage is currently being done by idiotic regulation than could be addressed by bringing home whole fish. I like your thinking and would welcome debate on this issue.

Michael Needs to Re-Take Third Form Year Dear Ed I read the two excellent letters in the January issue of The Fishing Paper. Soon after, DoC proudly proclaimed it had dropped 825 tonnes of 1080 over public lands, spending $10 million of public money. The project manager, Mike Slater, said the war was far from won - in other words, more poison is coming!

This is simply ignorant, irresponsible thinking. Slater needs to study food chains (3rd form biology) and simple rat reproduction. As outlined in conservationist Bill Benfield’s excellent book, The Third Wave, those rats that do not get knocked by 1080 will explode in numbers as Nature bounces back. Again 3rd form biology.

You see, Michael, rats can breed from five weeks of age, have three to four litters a year, with 10 to 12 in each litter. So with some 3rd form arithmetic, Michael, one female rat will have 48 young a year. So 50 surviving rats multiplied by 48 is 2,400. Get the picture Michael?

Then next year it’s 2,400 multiplied by 48 which is 115,200. Follow that?

In year three it’s 115,200 times 48. See what you are doing D0C and Nick Smith?

I remind you both, your salaries come from the public purse.

Apart from the ecosystem destruction Nick Smith’s Battle for the Birds is causing, it’s angerprovoking that it’s our public lands and our birds, deer and wildlife, funded by our money.

Most Holiday Fishers Followed the Rules

The Ministry for Primary Industries is generally happy with the level of compliance for recreational fishers over the three week holiday period, with shellfish gathering being an exception in some areas.

MPI Compliance Director Dean Baigent says it was a busy time for staff and honorary fisheries officers and the majority of fishers inspected were respecting the daily limits and minimum sizes.

“A couple of exceptions to this were cockle gatherers in the Auckland area who were taking more than the 50 allowed per day, and paua gatherers in pockets of the east coast from Gisborne to Canterbury.”

Exceptional weather and sea conditions saw very high levels of recreational activity in the Kaikoura area and one of the worst compliance rates for several years. Many of the 38 offences relate to people taking more than their daily limit of 50 cockles per person (for the Auckland/ Coromandel area).

WAIKATO/BAY OF PLENTY Offences – 24 (6 warnings, 10 infringement notices, 8 prosecutions likely) Most fishers are well aware of the new snapper regulations and the majority of offences related to people taking too many, or undersized shellfish, with paua being the most common species.

He said very warm weather and calm sea conditions made paua habitat very accessible in some areas.

EASTERN BAY OF PLENTY/POVERTY BAY

“Our staff and honorary fisheries officers get a lot of support from locals and holiday makers alike and we always welcome any reports of suspicious fishing activity.”

Most offences involved crayfish and paua.

The figures below have been compiled for each compliance district for the Ministry for Primary Industries from 20 December 2014 to 11 January 2015.

Offences – 42 (37 infringements and 5 prosecutions likely)

HAWKES BAY/WAIRARAPA Offences – 71 (62 warnings, 8 infringements and 1 prosecution likely) Most offences involved paua or crayfish.

WELLINGTON/TARANAKI Offences –14 (7 warnings, 5 infringements and 1 likely prosecution) Compliance rates were high. One exception was two fishers found with 138 paua who will face prosecution.

In total, 486 fisheries offences were recorded.

NORTHLAND

Offences – 82 (36 warnings, 43 infringements and 3 prosecutions likely)

Offences – 86 (warnings, infringements and prosecutions – breakdown not available)

Kaikoura Coast

MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS Offences – 21 (nine warnings and 12 infringements) Fisheries offending related to blue cod and set net breaches.

CANTERBURY /WESTLAND Offences – 73 (52 warnings, 20 infringements and 1 prosecution likely) Compliance was mostly good in Canterbury with paua being an exception. Wainui in Akaroa Harbour was a problem with compliance officers issuing infringements for taking undersized paua on most low tides.

OTAGO Offences – 25 (10 warnings, 14 infringements and 1 prosecution likely) Offending related to paua, blue cod and cockles SOUTHLAND Offences – 20 (15 warnings, 4 infringements and 1 prosecution likely) The prosecution relates to a man who was caught with 86 toheroa, which is a no-take species.

Always the Bridesmaid The big South Island coarse fishing event of the year is the Canterbury Open Championship and I travelled down to Lake Rotokahatu keen to break my three year run of second-placed finishes.

There was a change of format this time, with all anglers drawing a peg in A section on Saturday automatically fishing in B section on Sunday. As B section traditionally produces the most fish, this gave everyone a crack at the best pegs but the overall title would still be decided on section points, rather than total weight.

My first day’s draw produced peg 10 in A section. Any of pegs 6 to 9 would have been better, but I saw I had plenty of space to fish in and a willow tree hanging in the water to my right, which could be an advantage in the forecast 31 degree heat!

The whistle blew and first cast I hooked a tench – in the tail!

Foul-hooked fish still count and I carefully eased it backwards like a wet sack before it angrily burst into life in the landing net, showering me with a plume of spray.

Fish came steadily, although it never reached frantic pace as can often happen on this lake and I wondered how last year’s champ, Julian Barnett, was faring on Peg 7 out of sight to my left.

The hot day wore on and the fish seemed lethargic but the shade of the tree seemed to hold a shoal and I continued to catch as others slowed down. After the final whistle there was the weigh in and the official came along the bank with a disgruntled Julian, who told of a hard day with only four fish caught. The anglers on either side of him had managed 17lbs each and either side of me the weights were 26lb and 33lb. My bulging net of fish took three trips to the scales and totalled 89lbs! A great start.

Switching to A section for Sunday saw me pull out Peg 38, right in the middle. No tree cover this time but I was close to Peg 39, which had produced 95lbs for two-time champion Gary Dallimore to win the section the previous day. Surprisingly, the fishing was even harder than on Saturday and my catch rate gradually slowed as the sun reached its full height. Peg 39 dried up completely but Julian on Peg 36 continued to catch steadily until a group of hoons decided the trees in his peg were a good diving platform for a cooling dip! At the end of the match it was too close to call between us but we were both surprised when Dave Merrit, out of sight on Peg 41, tipped 91lbs on the scales.

I knew I wasn’t close, so the section win had gone and what’s more my 63lbs was just beaten by Julian’s 69lb haul. A total of four section points is rarely good enough to win a championship and as results came in from the other bank this was confirmed.

Gary had narrowly won a tough A section with 43lbs to claim another title and Dave Merrit’s three points had relegated me to third overall. In the seven years of this event I now have three thirds to go with my three seconds, but one day I’ll nail it!

Wren is Enough Enough?

Reports that none of 26 alpine rock wren monitored by the Department of Conservation in the Kahurangi National Park have been seen since the latest 1080 drop has prompted New Zealand First’s Outdoor Recreation spokesman, Richard Prosser, to call for an immediate moratorium on the aerial use of 1080.

“This incident could be clear evidence 1080 is killing off our native birds, not saving them,” he said.

He also argues DoC excuses over the rock wren’s disappearance lack credibility.

“To suggest the wren, which winters over in the alpine zone, could have disappeared due to snow is ludicrous,”

he said. Prosser also slates DoC’s claim that predatory activity may also be to blame - the 1080 programme was instigated to counter the high incidence of rats due to a beech seed mast – arguing that rats don’t live at the altitude of the rock wren.

Ten Years After!

If you’re of a certain age you might recall their music, but ten years after the Greymouth Fishing Club began running the King Kahawai Competition, the music of singing reels continues louder than ever.

This community event has become a firm favourite on the calendar of families around the Coast and we think there’re a couple of reasons for this - the way it gets supported by people who enjoy casting a line and buy-in from commercial outlets who sell tickets for us and offer generous sponsorship.

The prizes are very good for such a small club in a smallish town - every kid gets something.

The main prizes include: kayak, flash telly, rods, reels, tackle and cash… lots of cash.

To mark ten years we are offering ten hundred dollars – five hundy for the main senior prize and another five hundred for the top junior.

A quick word about how we find the winners… it’s not the biggest fish - that way we avoid people going mad and taking fish after fish, then having them go off in the Coast sunshine and being wasted. It’s the nearest fish to the average of all those weighed in on the day.

We encourage fishos to treat their catch with respect, as it’s a resource we are blessed to have right here in town under the shadow of the town clock.

And how easy is it to catch a kahawai and snare a good prize? Durn easy if they’re on the bite! First thing in the morning is a good time, but they can be taken throughout the day as the tide rises in the Grey River, or, if it’s calm, over the bar and out into the Tasman.

People cast from the shore or troll up and down the Grey.

Over the years we have had some interesting aspects to the event. In the first couple of years we tagged prize fish and released them under mayoral

supervision. Both years the fish headed off in the direction of Australia with only one getting caught – two weeks after the event! Each time we learnt something new about doing the competition and it was always recorded and acted upon the following year.

The prize giving is supported by council with a representative – either the mayor or deputy mayor - to hand out the prizes in front our locally well-known image of King Kahawai.

So this year the King will wave his golden trident and send everybody off to do battle with the vigorous species on Sunday 8th February (backup day if the weather misbehaves is a fortnight later).

We’re hoping for another great community event and are looking forward to still doing it ‘ten years after’ this one.

Fish Profile – Albacore Tuna

Description Albacore tuna belong to the scombridae family.

Albacore have a dark metallic blue body above, silverywhite below, and iridescent, lighter-blue sides. The body is rounded and streamlined and is moderately slender. The anal finlets are white, and the pectoral fins reach almost to the anal finlets in adults. Other fins are yellowish, and there is a white section on the tail.

Distribution Albacore are widespread in the warmer tropical waters north of New Zealand, where they arrive in the summer. Generally they are found over the outer shelf and are attracted to current boundaries. Some deep swimming adults may be found as far as 45 degrees south. Smaller, surface-schooling juveniles appear in the summer from the Bay of Plenty to Cook Strait and down the west coast of the South Island.

As we’ve discovered, albacore tuna are now also plentiful in Tasman Bay, generally along current lines in about 40 metres of water.

Targeting Albacore Albacore are caught by smaller New Zealand commercial vessels using troll, pole and longline methods.

For recreational fishers the most prolific bite time is generally mid-to-late morning when the sun is high. This probably draws the bait to the surface with the tuna in hot pursuit and once they’re on the surface they can be targeted by trolling lures. Other good bite times are late afternoon and twilight.

Albacore have medium-firm pinkish flesh with a steak-like texture and large moist flakes. They have a medium oil content with more omega-3 than other tuna. Bleed the tuna immediately by cutting the throat and chill straight away on ice or preferably in a salt ice slurry. They are called chicken of the sea because of the white flesh and chicken-like texture when cooked. Be aware that they are easily overcooked.

When canned it is called ‘white tuna’. The roe is salted and coloured to make a caviar substitute.

With Christmas done and dusted, my fifteen-year-old son, Jacob, headed into Hunting & Fishing Nelson to redeem a fistful of vouchers given to him by family.

He emerged with an Okuma Classic XT combo and was eager to put it to the test, so we headed out to the spat farm in Tasman Bay to chase the kingies.

It wasn’t your typical jigging gear, but you don’t need expensive kit, just the right attitude to get them in. Jacob borrowed my Broken Arrow pink and white 300g long jig, taking out a 99-year lease!

What unfolded was over three-hours of splashing action as we dealt to the multitude of rats around the farm. There were plenty of good ones at five-metres, and then came the cry we were waiting to hear: “Holy cow we have a screamer here, Dad!” The battle was fierce, with plenty of line being stripped and regained to be stripped again. Finally, after a twentyminute slog, Jacob dealt the winning blow and this 42lb ‘freight train’ of a kingfish came aboard. Jacob was still grinning two-weeks later.

Father-in-law, Don Shand, got the phone call to set up the smoker and later went to work on the rather large belly flaps and wings with his secret herbs and spices. The rest of the fish it was chopped into steaks and dished around family and friends. Don was invited on the fishing trip but declined: he regrets that decision.
