Winter weather has allowed great access to those treasured spots around d’Urville and the Outer Sounds. Amongst the flotilla of good keen fishos enjoying what the season has to offer, Insight Genesis mapping continues to produce the goods, with quicker access to both puka and kingies. Added bonuses are the interesting new holes and reef formations we are finding in so many known and unexpected places.

On another note, I received feedback from a client who had been told pork pies about the difference between broadband and pulse radars. The client was told broadband radars were not as good, because ‘they simply did not have a magnetron!’ I have already addressed this but clearly need to nip this one in the bud.

Broadband technology has been around since 1945, Navico have simply harnessed existing technology to produce an award winning radar that has less servicing issues due to the fact that it has no magnetron!

Worldwide, the emission standards of radar are under the spotlight, with international agreements to have the harmful radiation levels reduced to acceptable levels. I

t’s the classic boys fishing trip, the annual d’Urville excursion for 16 assorted, like-minded characters who love to get away from domestic bliss, catch fish, spin yarns, and sink the not too occasional drop of ‘pick your poison’. Lads from as far afield as Wellington, Christchurch, Central and the Deep South have converged on French Pass in June for years now, and we have even been known to include the odd Nelsonian in the mix.

We traditionally take five boats and spend a week fishing the waters of d’Urville, often with mixed results. This year we assembled during the last week of June to coincide with good tides, and had a ‘Liquorice All Sorts’ of weather and fishing.

and Thursday shone so bright we felt like kings… and they came aboard in the plenty.

Jigging Stephen’s Passage on an incoming tide for kingfish, we soon hit the action. Not everyone was hooking up though, and it soon became apparent that pink jigs in the 200-300g range were flavour of the day, with some monsters coming aboard. Gareth Robson grinned like a Cheshire all day after landing his first ever king and between three boats, we caught 28 fish. Only three of the smaller ones were kept and the rest released.

Returning the following day, we had another good session but on smaller fish; the big bruisers of the day before were obviously haunting reefs elsewhere, which goes to show fishing can be

This proved to be the case with snapper too. On the western side we found a couple of spots that delivered truckloads of good pannies, most of which were released. They could be fickle with the tide, too. I tried flasher rigs, which are normally bullet-proof, but couldn’t even snag the bottom. The snapper had decided standard ledger rigs were the preferred instrument of suicide and, what’s more, fresh kahawai was the poison.

All in all, it was a great annual reunion with a real smorgasbord taken: kingfish, cod, trevally, tarakihi, john dory, groper and far too many snapper.

Oh, and far too many obligatory hangovers as well!

This trip with Leigh and Wild Cat Charters had been in the planning for close to two years. It was to be a 40th birthday trip. The joke was, we wouldn’t get to go until my 50th! We did and it was well worth the wait!

A dark cold winter’s morning met us at 5.45am at Port Tarakohe, Golden Bay. Out and around the spit, then down the coast to fish off the Kahurangi Shoals. My personal target was groper, being the brunt of regular jokes about my lack of success in this area by the women, I had to tick the box.

Leigh lined us up for the first drop, and shortly afterwards Tricky was in.

“Experience,” he says, pulling a 12kg groper up. A few minutes later the old bugger was in again with a similar result.

Then James got in on the action. Selfdoubt now crept in, combined with ongoing ribbing and then finally, a strike.

It was the longest five minutes ever, pulling in my first groper. Twelve kilos of pleasure mixed with relief. Box ticked, monkey off back, “I knocked the bastard off.”

A longer drift put us onto some king tarakihi, which provided great fun dragging them up. Then into something a little bigger, head shakes and all, snapper. I pulled up the first one, leaned over the side to grab the leader, when a two metre mako decided it was his Craig goes incognito to preserve the secrecy of Spot X.

We fished for just over six hours and were greatly rewarded. Combine this with stunning scenery, great company and expert captaincy from Leigh, and it was a fantastic day. Asked when we got home, would I do it again, definitely. This time sooner rather than later.

in the river!

The take can be so subtle you think you’ve imagined it. Hence, the ‘strike’ can be tentative.

One moment you’re retrieving methodically, trying to keep the zeddy deep, where it might provoke an annoyed response from a salmon nosing its way quietly into the long-remembered scent of the river of its birth and the next moment you’re attached to extraordinary energy.

An uneventful fishing day is transformed into an intense struggle with a powerful quarry, which ends in a rush of relief as the capacious net envelopes the beautiful silvered foe. A salmon is the only fish I have real trouble despatching without unease.

The stretch of the lower Waimakariri, traditionally referred to as Macintoshes is an addictive place to fish. It doesn’t present the booming surf of a river mouth, nor the rush of a braided channel into a deep hole upriver. Its adherents however, are many. The broad brackish flow slides by, the ever-present shags entertain as they bob to the surface with yet another small flounder, which was never designed to slide easily down a long and thin neck, the schools of yellow-eyed mullet flash, as they play along the water’s edge and the sun warms the anglers’ backs. Often only a couple of metres apart, we cast and fish and chat and laugh. When a silver prize is landed, most rods are rested as we all gather to admire, compare and congratulate.

The rods are re-gathered and for a brief period, the concentration is intense. Within a short time though, the chatter and the laughter resume. We might catch our one tomorrow, we think.

The 17-pounder pictured isn’t huge but the pleasure lit up a season, as it was my only one.

With low water and few freshes for many weeks, the fishing had been inconsistent. But one day there was a slight fresh and the morning after presented us with a river with just a little colour.

We wondered if the marginally increased flow would entice just a small number of fish to begin their rush upstream. My 22gm zeddy, yellow,

with a red stripe along the edge, a colour scheme which often provides just the visibility required in such water, had fluttered deep and slowly across the floor of the river many times. Then as thoughts turned to other days, its progress was arrested. The heart lurched and the breathing, for a moment, seemed to stop. I was in business.

At the age of 11, Daniel Crimp has amassed a lot of fishing experience, both locally and internationally. He’s been fishing independently since age four when he acquired his all time favourite rod, ‘Lucky’ and caught his first fish, a 5lb snapper in Stephens Passage, d’Urville Island. He couldn’t even see over the gunwales of the boat and pulled the snapper from 80m of water with his little arms above his head.

His favourite rig is a Black Magic Tarakihi Terror flasher rig, which has helped him win the Dawnbreakers Most Species cup four times. He returned to the passage recently and, using a Black Magic Snapper Terror, had a blistering day catching a range of species. His favourite catch of the day were a brace of big trevally.

Now you have your floats organised, the next step is how to shot your rig. The basic styles in shotting a rig are: the shirt button shot or the bulk shot.

Now which one to use? This all depends on the conditions on hand and the species of coarse fish you are trying to catch.

If it’s blowing a hooley, then a bulk shot where most shot are 3-4 inches from the hook is the best option to start with. This low down shot pattern resists the wind dragging it around the lake. Adjusting your rig to an inch or two over depth will also help in extreme cases. For species such as tench, this is the most common approach as they feed hard on the bottom, so there is no point wasting time getting to the bottom if there is a heap of fish about.

If it is calm you can utilise a shirt button or otherwise known as the strung out style shot pattern. As the name suggests, the shot are evenly spaced through the length of the rig, which reduces the sink rate and gives surface to mid-water species such as goldfish, rudd and perch, more time to intercept the bait on its way to the bottom. The bait will also look more natural to tench if the going is tough as it slowly settles down to the bottom.

You can chop and change between the two different styles quickly and simply by shifting your shot up or down the rig. Shot dispensers are available in most tackle stores in New Zealand and cover a range of sizes from six through to swan shot. A simple shot conversion chart is available on line if you Google it.

Graham Gurr of Halcyon Press, New Zealand’s foremost publisher of fishing and hunting books, argues that the whole purpose of fishing is to catch fish, and, quite simply, he loves catching fish. Crimpy chatted with Gurr about his love of fishing and discovered that there is, perhaps, more to this enigmatic figure than meets the fly.

The purpose of fishing Graham Gurr is not averse to spin fishing, or bait fishing for that matter. He just predominantly fishes with the fly because it tends to be more productive.

And he’s ambivalent about nymph versus dry fly, arguing that whatever works is fine by him.

“It’s about catching fish and if the trout are taking nymphs, I’ll happily cast a nymph all day but if it requires a dry fly to tempt them, then that is what I use,” says Gurr. But then he adds a qualifier that suggests the still waters of our favourite publisher just might run a little deeper. “Admittedly, if the dry is working, it is infinitely more fun than nymphing because you get to experience the thrill of watching the trout rise to the fly and then you have to time the strike.”

Once a year, he ‘invites’ himself to fish with longtime friend and fishing icon, Tony Entwistle, and the duo spend several days working the waters of the Top of the South. Of course, the objective is to catch fish and that’s what they do - with a level of intensity. When asked what fly he took a particular trout on, Gurr, as often as not, will answer, “One that Enty picked!”

He reckons Entwistle is so particular, they fall into a comfortable rhythm on the river: “Here use this one - Nup, that didn’t work, cast this - nup, try this one - and so on,” claims Gurr.

On this particular day, the ‘Mot’ was clearing after two days of flooding and Gurr ultimately hooked nine trout and landed six, including the plump 4lb brown pictured. It’s an important statistic because, after all, the purpose of fishing is to catch fish.

But, once Gurr fell into the comfortable rhythm of the

interview, he rose to a perfectly presented dry, “So what is it about catching trout that keeps luring you back to the river for more?”

His voice became more fluid, arcing like a well-presented fly line, “When you get to fish with a friend like Enty, when you get to share the experience and catch each other’s fish, it becomes a great day on the water and the perfect time away from work!”

There was a pause on Gurr’s backcast, and then he peeled out the perfect delivery: “There is a certain rhythm and cadence to fly fishing, and it is pleasing when you do it well. There is an art to the delivery, timing in the cast, and a style in the way the fly is presented that can be intensely satisfying.”

So it’s not just about catching fish!

There is no lagoon around Niue, but it is skirted by reefs.

The sea offshore is very deep and takes on an incredible deep purple blue colour. The Alofi wharf is essentially a concrete block, which has been poured on top of a reef. A deep channel has been blasted on the north side to allow boat access and an electric hoist is used to launch and retrieve small boats.

It was rough the day I went chartered Tony and his boat Sarah, and we couldn’t find the FAD. We trolled flying fish and skirted lures, with two rods on either side and a couple of very heavy nylon lines tied onto the bar in the cockpit, Niue style. Although we had no strikes, we had fun circumnavigating the island and saw dolphins, black and white striped sea snakes, and flying fish, which I thought were incredible. They flapped their wing fins so fast they looked like large humming birds as they flew low over the waves. It was a pity I wasn’t there the week before, when Tony got yellowfin, wahoo and mahi mahi!

Later in the week I tried fishing off the wharf using a single hook and a swivel as weight, letting the line float freely in the water. There were plenty of small fish to fish for and I caught a number of small red bass, which I released. I’d been warned not to take them because they were probably full of the poison, ciguatera, which comes from naturally occurring microscopic algae that bloom on reefs damaged by cyclones or human activity. One of the teachers came down with a mild case while I was there.

At night the lights on the wharf attract a few small school fish. I tried a popper one night and did get a strike from a big fish.

On our last day I checked out the reef on the north side. It was close to high tide and the swell was surging over the reef into the deeper water closer to the shore. In the white water by the concrete stairs there were large fish chasing small fish, and what a sight it presented. But that’s typically Niue - even when the weather is rough, there are fish at her feet.

I just can’t catch snapper

With a big high sitting smack over the centre of the country I pointed the big blue growly thing toward the open ocean and gunned the 200hp to ‘warp speed’. The hull reared up, settled, and then fell into a rhythmic bobble as we skipped across a surface barely weathered by a light sea breeze and bedecked with assorted glittering gems highlighted by the unveiled sun.

Life didn’t get much better than this: two days fishing already under the belt and the promise of a good day to come. Earlier in the week, Daniel and I had enjoyed a private day on the water and fished Stephen’s Passage with only one other boat in sight. The little devil out-fished me again, pulling in our entire quota of snapper while the ‘snapper’ I called, morphed into trevally and tarakihi at the surface.

A return to the same spot saw a different crew but similar results. The fish were not feeding and we had to work hard to entice a bite, but played a game of attrition. With thirty boats working the Passage it was hectic but most gave up early in frustration. I am a great believer in working a school of fish when things are quiet, because they will come on the feed eventually, and it proved to be the case. With the drogue out to slow the drift, we drifted over the same school all afternoon and quietly picked off fish here and there. Matt Sangster

Large illegal haul foiled on Lake Ellesmere

Canterbury Fishery Officers received a call from a disgruntled member of the public in late July that a man was taking way too many fish from Lake Ellesmere. The caller gave a brief description of the vehicle and the registration plate number.

Fisheries Officers arrived in time to stop the vehicle as it was leaving the lake.

The fisher was friendly when first approached and when officers asked how many fish he had, he replied, “Only a couple”.

Upon searching the vehicle the officers found three fish bins with a total of 111 flatfish, made up of sand flounder, black flounder and yellow belly flounder, and 29 yellow-eyed mullet.

The recreational limit for flatfish is 30 per person, per day, which is more than enough to feed a large family several times.

The fisher admitted to setting and clearing two set nets, whereas recreational regulations permit a person to only fish one set net. This meant the yellow-eyed mullet were illegal even though there is no recreational limit on numbers. The fish and the fisher’s vehicle were seized. He is likely to face fisheries charges for taking more than three times the daily recreational limit.

But on this last trip it was just Lou and me, and I had a different spot up my sleeve. Far out to sea we bobbled and we dropped our lines in waters uncluttered with other boats.

Straightaway I hooked up and it was solid.

“Groper!” I hissed triumphantly, giving a blow-by-blow description as it ascended.

Lou said nothing until we sighted colour.

“Nice tarakihi,” he said.

Then the sod announced he’d hooked up by shouting: “Net, get the bloody net… it’s a monster snapper!”

I turned to see a wallowing bronze slab of snapper sliding up to the boat and made a mental note not to invite Lou again.

We plied the same drift again, because we knew the fish to be down there.

“Snapper,” I shouted confidently, as the nods telegraphed up the line. “It’s a thumper too!”

Lou just smiled and didn’t say anything, until it surfaced: “Nice pup groper, Crimpy!”

“I just can’t catch snapper!” I mumbled.

But life doesn’t get much better than that!

D.I.Y. casting cannon Following my long distance casting information in last month’s Sinker to Smoker this story from Rod Littlefield of Blenheim shows another way of getting your baits well out in the surf.

Rod’s story: I am a member of the Marlborough Angling and Surfcasting Club and for the last two years have organised a practice surfcasting session on grass. I thought I was pretty good but my ego was shattered when I found under ideal conditions I could just cast a 4oz sinker 70 yards. The two best casters reached 100 yards.

Add a ledger rig with two baits, standing in surf on a windy day and my 70 yards is considerably reduced.

Last year in the Shed magazine I read an article about a guy making a golf ball cannon using low pressure compressed air and plastic plumbing tubing. I immediately thought I could adapt the idea for surfcasting and started working out how to do it and where to source parts. Then on TV in a Graeme Sinclair fishing programme, he featured one being used on a beach in New Zealand! An American firm is producing them and they are available here. Look up ‘sandblaster baitcaster’ on the internet.

Using only 100psi air pressure and about a 6’x2” diameter barrel they claim to fire their baits, frozen into a 6” long ‘bullet,’ 300 yards.

At least they proved to me the idea is viable, so I carried on and finished building mine.

On completion I took the cannon to a remote beach for testing accompanied by Mike Stoneley, our club treasurer who brought his camera. There was a moderate breeze blowing, so I set up to fire into the breeze

along the beach. I initially fired just a 4oz sinker, dropped down the barrel behind a plastic sabot, with the 6’ trace then connected to the braid on the rod and reel. Two low pressure firings confirmed everything worked fine so upped the pressure but had a problem.

The small 12 V portable compressor I had purchased and rated to 100 psi, would not give much over 65 psi, however the sinker still travelled 115 yards into the breeze.

I was very happy with the first trial and have since replaced the compressor with one rated to 150 psi and it works fine. The reservoir is charged to 100 psi for firing. Second problem arose when I tried to actually launch a baited line. I had a two-hook baited ledger rig hanging off the end of the rod and a long trace to the sinker, which I dropped down the barrel. On firing the sinker took off beautifully but the snatch on the baits just broke the line, leaving them lying on the beach!

Now I place the two baited hooks in the sabot, with a cardboard disc between them to prevent tangling and the sinker on top.

This works fine and even mussel bait secured with bait elastic survives launching. I want to use fresh baits with this rig, rather than a pre-frozen ‘bullet’ as used by the commercial model.

Presently this rig travels about 120 yards with a 4oz sinker but I believe a heavier sinker will extend this. The commercial version is firing a lot more weight. I now have the ability to reach the cleaner or deeper water when surfcasting, or punch further into an onshore wind. I may not catch more fish but trust me it’s a lot of fun and very impressive with that ‘woof’ as the sinker and line is fired out!

This year has seen a spate of unintentional firearm shootings across the country. After each incident, people naturally ask how this can happen and what we can do to make sure that it never happens again.

Daryl Crimp As a newbie to hunting sika, I have this to say about them: they are addictive!

Both wily and inquisitive, they can be a challenge to hunt, particularly if it is a trophy you are after, yet they can also be a walkover at times, especially when chasing meat for the table.

Unlike red deer, which will leave a catchment when spooked, sika are used to working around human intrusion, and hunters can use this to their advantage. This turned out to be the case on a recent mid-winter hunt with Bruce McKenzie.

The weather was crap for most of the week but huntable, so we put in dark-to-dark missions and saw plenty of animals, although the trophy we sought was better than us. I spotted it a kilometre away one evening and again the next morning. Unfortunately, the nice eight-pointer was sticking close to cover and only stayed in the open briefly during the ‘witching hour’, that change-of-light period when gloom gives way to ink, or the flood day.

On the one classically fine winter’s day we

enjoyed, so too did the sika. As anticipated, the animals came out in numbers and on a face not far from the hut, we counted 12 stags and a scattering of fawns and hinds. They were never all present at once and we could have easily walked past without seeing any, had we not been strong advocates of glassing. The face looked empty, but persistent glassing soon revealed an antler, and then, over the following three hours, deer materialised and disappeared like flickers in a fire. None were quite what we were after so we sat back and enjoyed observing them, although one huge 6-pointer might consider buying a lotto ticket!

Turning back to the hut, we were astonished to see two stags feeding within spitting distance of the bathroom window! They had clearly not been disturbed by the clumsy ablutions of two big men and a noisy generator, and were literally living under our noses.

The next morning I hunted under my nose and shot a fat yearling hind within sight of the kitchen window. You gotta love sika hunting. I hope they don’t find a cure for it anytime soon.

For the most part, we need to look at individual firearms users. It’s not the firearm that is dangerous, it’s the person using it. When a firearm is used incorrectly, a tragedy can occur. As firearms users, we are responsible for our actions from the moment we take a firearm out of the safe, through to the final resting place of a projectile once fired, back to putting the firearm away safely again. And respect is part of that responsibility.

RESPECT FOR THE RULES – There are seven basic rules of firearms safety: Treat every firearm as loaded, always point firearms in a safe direction, load a firearm only when ready to fire, identify your target beyond all doubt, check your firing zone, store firearms and ammunition safely, and avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms.

Often, when an incident occurs, one or more of these rules have been broken.

Learn the rules and embed them in your thought process to keep you safe.

RESPECT FOR YOUR FRIENDS AND OTHERS – Consider every target as human until proven otherwise. Once you pull the

trigger you can’t go back.

RESPECT FOR YOURSELF – When you are hunting, you can be fooled by your own senses. Movement, colour, sound and shape can all deceive you.

All of this seems simple enough, but it falls to all firearms users to take responsibility and keep themselves, their mates and other users safe in the field.

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) delivers the firearms and hunter safety programme nationally, including the firearms safety courses and testing that all applicants are required to attend and pass prior to receiving a firearms licence, as well as Whakatupato and Range Officer courses, under contract to New Zealand Police.

Carbon fibre nanotechnology give shooters edge Rapid advances in technology have revolutionised hunting and shooting, and local company, Kiwi Composites, is at the forefront of lightweight stock development and carbon fibre wrapping of barrels. not compromised by two halves trying to shear apart, which creates a stronger stock.

Composite pillars are installed during manufacture, eliminating the need for aluminium bedding pillars, and ensuring the stocks shoot well from the factory.

However, they do recommend skim bedding to ensure optimum results.

Using the latest America’s cup technology and non-compressible lightweight foam, Kiwi Composites have been able to produce a comfortably fitting, lightweight rigid stock that produces less felt recoil.

Carbon fibre wrapped barrels

Again, using patented nanotechnology, Kiwi Composites have produced a product that is unique in the world.

The idea of carbon fibre wrapping a barrel is to produce maximum rigidity with maximum weight saving, and Kiwi Composites have been able to achieve this with a 22 - 25mm outside barrel diameter.

The upshot to the hunter or shooter is: less felt recoil, multi-shot accuracy, total barrel protection from all atmospheric conditions, and a significant reduction in retained barrel heat (fire 60 shots and still touch the barrel).

Of course, you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, so the basis of a good product is the barrel. It’s hard to believe that it is the 22nd Sika Show, and I have only missed one. NZ AMMO was at the very first one organised by Cam Speedy, then working for DoC, at that iconic Taupo watering establishment, the Spa Hotel. We set up our goods on one of the pool tables. Sacrilege I know, but that was consistent with the times.

Things have certainly moved on since then and Mark Bridgeman, the current promoter, has even added an extra marque this year to cope with the extra exhibitors. And it goes without saying that the number and quality of the sika heads entered in to the yearly competition has increased substantially; sika heads scoring over Douglas score 200 are no longer uncommon.

One of the big things the Sika Show has done is to very successfully promote deer hunting and, by default, the taking of quality sika deer heads. Hunters have a greater appreciation of what constitutes a trophy head and are, on average, less inclined to shoot any old stag carrying a bit of bone. There’s no point, you just damage the herd quality.

The intricacies of Advanced Archery

Bow hunting is challenging but the rewards are huge.

B

ow hunting in New Zealand is more popular than ever, with large numbers of rifle hunters converting to the discipline and increasing numbers of newbies entering the sport directly through archery. However, simply buying a bow from the rack or online will not guarantee proficiency or any degree of consistent success. The intricacies in being kitted out and set up with a bow and accessories suited to to your needs requires expert assistance and that’s where Advanced Archery has nocked their arrow.

Carol Watson, five times NZBS champion, successful bowhunter and Advanced Archery co-owner, says that bows are something people need help with, but it shouldn’t be daunting.

“It is critical that hunters get set up correctly and learn the basics from the onset, so we put in a lot of time pre pointof-sale.”

Before a bow and accessories are chosen,

a bit of groundwork is required but it is straight forward with the help of expert advice from Advanced Archery. Carol says hunters are individuals and need to be measured and fitted to a bow, even at entry level. First up, eye dominance is established because this determines if a hunter will require a right or left-hand bow. It doesn’t always follow that a right-handed person will shoot a right-hand bow.

Draw length is also assessed, which requires some coaching in posture, stance and technique. To the layperson it may not seem a big issue, but it is important and can allow for fine-tuning as the hunter progresses.

Draw weight is next and dependent on age, strength, technique and the amount of adjustment available on the bow. Carol says it is important to find the right weight bracket for the individual, particularly when new to the sport, as they need scope to grow into the bow.

“We assess the draw weight so the lowest setting is comfortable for the individual to draw without impacting on technique, while not being too easy either. We increase the draw weight as your technique and bow fitness improve, to a weight you are comfortable with long term” It’s always important to ensure the bow can adjust to the draw length and weight required, but even more so for teenagers who need a bow that can adjust as they grow. There are fantastic models available now that a teenager will never outgrow, in draw length or draw weight.

She says that many don’t realise the subtleties involved and can come unstuck when buying sight unseen online. An incorrectly matched bow can lead to bad technique, poor performance, low success, frustration, and end up an expensive exercise.

Advanced Archery also has a strategy for buying, which involves looking at the bow in relation to accessories and vice versa.

Carol says they do offer a very good entrylevel basic kit for around $800 - $1000, but there is still scope to customise this by upgrading some of the accessories.

“If someone is considering this, I’d recommend investing in a better arrow rest and/or a better release aid.

Another way to buy is to look at what accessories you like first.

“All bows we sell carry a lifetime warranty,” says Carol. “They are very reliable and there is little that can grow wrong, even for hunters doing the hard yards..” She says that if anything is likely to let you down, it is accessories, so she encourages hunters to put effort into selecting quality, and items they really like that will improve their results Once the accessories are sorted, it’s time to focus on a suitable bow. There’s a wide choice, both in terms of quality and performance: speed, weight, draw cycle and efficiency.

“It is certainly worth spending time discussing your requirements and aspirations with us, as it will better help us to help you fine tune your selection,” says Carol.

But it doesn’t end with the chime of the cash register.

“Once you are shooting you still need us.”

Carol proves that good skills and a finely tuned bow is the perfect mix for success.

At the point of sale, Advanced Archery records all the settings on the new bow: relevant set up measurements. These can change so, after a month, Advanced Archery offer a free equipment check, during which they also check the shooter to make sure form is good and no bad habits have crept in.

“We do a lot of coaching of hunters,” Carol explains, “both of technique and what’s going on in your head.”

Bow hunting is exciting due, in a large part, to the close proximity the hunter must get to the game, so they need to learn to shoot through the buck fever. Carol says that, while it is important to teach the physical aspects of shooting a bow, the major part of bow hunting is mental. To this end they have developed, and teach, a shot sequence that helps the hunter put the arrow where it is supposed to go, consistently.

Secrets to using the AJ Caller during the sika rut

n electronic caller is another tool in the hunter or photographer’s arsenal to improve success, but it does require some strategy.

First of all, l don’t overdo it, always have the wind in your favour and remember, the most effective days to get a sika stag to respond or come to a call is when there is least roaring activity.

Everyone will have different ideas on when and where to use the caller but this is generally what we do.

We will play the single call about 4-6 times an hour and in that time we may use the He-haw call once or twice. I find the He-haw call to be more effective in the evenings.

When using the single call, we mix it up a little. Sometimes we will give a single call only and other times will give a couple of soft stag mews first, followed five seconds later with a loud single call. Another effective calling sequence using the sika deer 2 card is to give the hind/fawn call, followed by a loud single call 5-10 seconds later.

Also on the sika 2 card is the Yak Yak call (Button 4). Very few hunters would have ever heard this particular call. It is a soft call that a sika stag will sometimes use when following a hind in heat or chasing away a subordinate stag. The calling sequence worth trying is: Button 5 is a fawn/hind series of calls, but we don’t

use the entire sequence. Press (5) fawn/ hind call and then press STOP button immediately after second call, which is the hind. Wait about five seconds and press the Yak Yak call. About 10 seconds later, belt out a loud single call.

Just mix things up a little.

There is no right or wrong way to use the caller but as already mentioned above, don’t overdo it. After giving a call wait at least five minutes before moving on.

However, we have sat in one place for as long as 25-30 minutes and had sika stags walk in after all that time.

In an area where stags are already calling, we don’t do any calls unless we have too.

Since they are making all the noise, we just sneak in. In the past, we have successfully used the single call and stag mews while in close to a group of deer, however, you will only roar up the young stags, not the master. If a master stag is holding a hind, then no amount of calling will make him leave her.

Spiker, fawn and hinds calls are good to use during the rut but can also be effective outside the rut. When using these calls, only have them at half volume - not full volume.

On quiet evenings, we will give a He-haw call and a stag may reply back straight away with a single call. Generally, if a Jap stag replies straight away to your He-haw or single call, then there is a good chance he is

on his way. He may take less than a minute or five minutes to come in, depending on how far away he is.

The AJ Caller can be controlled via the wireless remote, giving the advantage of having distance between the game caller and the hunter. Not all deer will walk right up to where the call is coming from but will sneak in and stand back 20-30 metres or so and look. Of course you have no idea that this has happened until you move off and an animal crashes away.

When using the remote with the game caller, one of the key benefits is it gives you more time to observe an animal that has come into your calls. A deer will pin point the exact location where the call came from and hone in on it as if the spot was marked with a G.P.S. By standing back 30 – 50 metres or more (if the terrain allows) you have a good opportunity to see any animals moving in.

Remember; other hunters may be using a caller so always identify your target beyond any doubt.

Hunters do not look like deer and deer do not look like hunters, so there is absolutely no excuse for making a mistake, which one would live to regret forever.

For safety reasons I strongly recommend wearing some form of blaze orange when using a game caller, especially in areas of high hunter numbers.

he ridge we were descending ended on a high point before flattening out into the valley floor, providing a great vantage point to see right up to the head of the watershed. The odd roar drifted in from afar but nothing was going to town. To our left lay a big patch of kanuka with a large grassy clearing in its centre. Dave spotted deer in it and determined one was an eight pointer worth having a crack at, but it was over a kilometre away. To get within bow range we would have to plan our stalk carefully.

With our plan firmly set, we headed down through the tussock and across the valley to the main creek. The wind was behind us blowing towards the opposite side of the creek to the stag. Reaching the second gully, we cautiously climbed it and crossed over into the first gully, the one closest to the clearing. This gave us

a good view of where we had last seen the stag, so we glassed the area. Nothing. We kept glassing. Nothing. I began thinking the worst when Dave whispered, “There’s one!”. He had spotted a hind in some low kanuka 50 metres above the clearing. Then another and another.

We located four deer, but not the eight-pointer.

We were pondering our next move when, forty metres below, a large bodied eight-point stag calmly walked through the scattered scrub. A trophy animal for sure. It was heading

towards the gully we had just walked up, which caught us off guard. I fumbled to nock an arrow, then Dave gave a roar. The stag stopped.

I was concerned it would cut our wind or ground scent, so I left Dave and Gem, heading back to intercept the stag.

I soon found myself below Dave, with the stag thirty-five metres below me, but I couldn’t see it. Not a good position to be in. Dave roared but nothing happened. Time stood still. I strained to find him without giving away my position. I glanced up at Dave who was pointing below. Looking to where he was indicating, I saw a pair of polished white tops heading towards Dave, who had dropped to his knees and was now completely out of sight.

I drew the bow back. Another roar from Dave kept the stag on an intercept course with him.

It was all up to me now. I was kneeling behind a small flax bush and had a wide field of view.

The antlers grew bigger and then I could see the stag’s head, then its body. My heart was pounding and time raced. There was a gap in the cover 18 metres away that I could shoot through. I was hoping the stag would stop there. He didn’t. There was another gap at 15 metres but he went right past that too. The stag

The stag stopped. was in my sights as he stepped out into the open, side on to me. He was nine metres away and four metres below Dave. The stag stretched forward, looking up the vertical bank to where Dave was hiding. I was now in full view and he turned his head - and looked directly at me.

Too late, the arrow was on its way. It slammed into the stag and disappeared through its chest.

The stag wheeled and bolted downhill.

I was breathless; I could not believe the stag had come in so close. It had been an amazing stalk and I was over the moon to say the least. The stag was eight-years-old and had an excellent head, good length and heavy timber, measuring 161DS.

The wind was blowing up the valley so we would have the wind behind us for the first 500 metres. This was a calculated risk. The stag would be a lot higher and on the other side of the creek, so our scent shouldn’t reach it. To the right and upstream of the clearing were two small gullies. We decided to head up the second one, using the natural contours as cover, as this would put us downwind and above the stag, and in a great position to stalk the stag. The trick would be to locate the stag again, as he would be out of view soon after we left the ridge.

On steaming into our bay, we were disgusted by the state of it; deer carcasses and rotting fish frames littered the beach. The previous party had only left two hours previously. The dirty bastards.

THAT’S whitetail hunting!

ith our 509 Stabi in tow behind the charter vessel,The Provider, we’d crossed Foveaux Strait early to avoid the rising 35 knot winds and our team from Golden Bay and Nelson were eagerly anticipating seven days hunting the elusive whitetail of Stewart Island. Now, with spirits low, we faced a massive clean up, but at least the rain was holding off. We were itching for a look around but with only a few hours light left, decided to rest the block for a day; we figured it might help as the previous party had only shot six deer over ten days. Not wanting to sit idle, Mike took me out to his secret reef 500m from the hut and we instantly loaded up on 45cm plus cod for tea.

We don’t usually hunt until around 8.00am but some were so eager they were rattling around the hut by five! Areas sorted, I headed for a terrace to show Adam the ropes before splitting up and heading to a favourite spot where I’d shot a couple on an earlier trip. I gave Adam a parting shot, instructing him to take GPS waypoints every

few hundred metres, as it is easy to get lost in the flat, dense terrain.

Sneaking through the crown fern, I heard two loud shots from Mike’s direction and thought, ‘You bewdy!’

Then white - but not the usual ‘flash of white’ through the bush.

Kneeling down and watching for movement, I caught sight of a bush moving. A hind materialised, looked at me and continued feeding 50m away, with only the top of her shoulder visible. At the sound of the shot she dropped and a buck’s head popped up and stared at me, then vanished. Still, I was happy with what I had: a big fat barren hind and a beautiful skin for home.

Arriving back at camp it was pleasing to see Mike had shot a hind and Rodger a yearling: first day, three shot and five seen - not bad.

Daily evening drinks kicked in around five, followed by plenty of banter, and laughter thanks to George’s quick wit.

Over the course of the next few days we interspersed the hunting with a spot of relaxing, a good measure of fishing, and I cut a track to a nice clearing and gave Adam a few pointers on how to hunt it.

Using the GPS to mark spots and trails proved invaluable… until some plonker read the wrong waypoint and stepped into a clearing to be greeted with a flash of orange in the distance; fortunately, we were all wearing hi viz clothing thanks to an unnerving encounter with poachers on a previous trip. I immediately amended my course and headed for the correct clearing! While walking along a log, a hind stuck its head out and I had number two in the bag.

Another day, Mike and I took the boat and explored deeper into the block while Adam headed off towards his new clearing. I had a good scout around but having seen no sign, headed back towards the boat and was startled when a shot rang out. While standing on the beach waiting for me, a hind popped its head out so Mike shot it! That’s whitetail hunting.

Back at camp we were stunned to learn that Adam had shot a nine-pointer on the track to the clearing - and we thought we were tinny! THAT’S whitetail hunting!

We pulled out a day early because the weather crapped out, but what a magic trip: a beautiful place, great mates and great times.

“Wow!” said aloud and with awe. After a timely pause, a second “wow,” because one just wasn’t enough. In the dim light of pre-dawn, and with a barely discernable background of rugged mountains topped with snow, I had just had a close encounter with a detonating fireball.

I’d been climbing uphill for half an hour, catching my breath and taking in my surrounds when this spectacular shooting star caught my eye. It was close.

Close enough to thrill, and oh-sirree did it thrill. Its finale, a small ‘pop’ and shower of brightwhite debris left me feeling, well, “wow!”

Onwards and upwards, crunchy-loud frost footsteps give me away. Fallow deer, startled by my unexpected presence, pogo off with legs stiff and tails flashing blazes of white and cream. Snow-capped mountains are bathed in orange-pink light as the sun rises lazily to my left.

With me are my two faithful pig dogs, their tracking collars flash tiny green lights in the gloom.

What a day - what a privilege to be here.

The hill is steep and of the Eveready variety. It keeps going and going and going. It is still laying itself before me as the sun rises and the light brightens.

Shadows depart and hawks eagerly await the warmth which will create thermals, escalators

into the sky on which they’ll hunt. I could do with an escalator myself. Instead I plod doggedly, pausing often to look for pigs or pig sign.

The dogs, they leave and return often. Pearl, the workaholic, tests every breeze and investigates every lead. Gin is more whoa than go.

Pearl is off exploring when I hear a bark from the manuka stand ahead. But is it a bark of the canine variety? More likely the single expletive was a fallow deer sounding an alarm call. My GPS screen shows a green line, Pearl’s trail, through the top of the manuka stand and over the ridge behind it. I click Gin away, soon her little black line joins the green line on-screen. Two lines interwoven and getting longer by the second. Pig on!

My GPS screen also shows contour lines. Red lines, contours so tight they’re interwoven too.

I don’t need a GPS to tell me its steep here. Besides having just climbed and climbed and climbed, I can see the nearvertical terrain ahead. See the bluffs and the rugged rock outcrops amongst the sparse manuka. See the runnels which have scoured the hillside so deep they’re impassable.

Back in the huge rock-garden the dogs’ green and black lines have vanished. The GPS informs me its ‘Lost Comms’ with Pearl and Gin. They are both now

The FAPDS crew (Fishing and Piss Drinking Syndicate) is an eclectic mix of reprobates from Nelson, Wellington and Christchurch, who have been going on trips around New Zealand every three-to-four years for the past two decades.

We have explored such illustrious destinations as the Bay of Plenty chasing marlin (twice), Fiordland hunting and fishing, Haast whitebaiting, the Chathams fishing, and this February we dipped way down south to Stewart Island.

We hired the Takaroa II out of Bluff to take us to our block, South Pegasus. Most of the time we anchored in Disappointment Cove. On the first night Inky and I went for an evening hunt and set up in fading light. Despite the numbers of deer, they are used to living in close quarters to hunters, so are difficult to hunt. The crafty little devils are like ghosts, so absolute stealth and a bit of luck is required it you are to be successful. Inky climbed a tree to get a good view and to keep from the deer’s line of sight. His hind came out just on dusk and he felled it with a clean shot.

It was a weird place to hunt in that we had the company of sealions on the beach and yellow-eyed penguins in the bush.

opposite me and I need no touch-screen to tell me ‘quarry is treed.’

Another break, a 50 metre mad-dash. Brakes applied, another bail. The dogs’ barks hint at anxiety. A toey, tusky boar, horrendous near-vertical underfoot conditions, heavy cover. I’m sliding on my arse, grabbing at shrubs, skittering across screes. Across the way I see the boar break again, two tired dogs in pursuit, desperate to keep him cornered.

Finally I’m crossing the scoured stream the dogs had crossed 10 minutes earlier. I’m panting and scrabbling my way towards them. Pausing to listen for the echo of their barking, hearing it, thinking ‘good dogs’ and puffing ever onwards. One last rock outcrop. A small basin full of matagouri and lawyer vines, Gin hard at work while Pearl comes to meet me.

Gin - fat and slow and old.

It’s her, not pacey Pearl, doing the hard yards right now. Her asserting herself, commanding attention from both Boris and I. Her feet are raw from skidding on the ragged rocks, she’s had no drink since we left camp and she is parched and exhausted. Gin has been in this situation before, she knows I’ll come, so she hangs tough and hangs on.

I‘m here Gin - a message sent subliminally - I can’t make a sound or the boar will bolt. The old trooper smells my sweat on the down draught. She hears the matagouri spikes scratch across my canvas chaps. Her tail wags as she bails with new found confidence. She awaits the rifle shot, for she knows it too will eventually come.

It was getting late but I figured I had half an hour of daylight left, so loaded the Sako .270 with three silver tip 130 grain bullets, kissing the last one to help it on its way. A strong wind and light misty rain slashed at my leafy full camo as I entered the forest - perfect.

I’d only been stalking for 10 minutes when a flicker caught my eye. The area lit up when I looked through the scope but all I could see were trees sweeping away into the distance. I inched forward to look into the next lane, keeping the scope to my eye. A spiker stared back and further on I could make out a larger deer. I settled the crosshairs on the nearest animal and gently squeezed the trigger. The gun jumped a little and the spiker was down - camp meat.

However, I was hunting stag so left the deer where it fell and sunk deeper into the valley. Smashed toi toi bushes and a deep rutting hole screamed stag.

Analysing the wind, I cautiously picked my route and moved in very slowly. It roared and I put him at 100 yards away, so I slowed further and kept an eye out for hinds that could ruin my stalk. I pinpointed his location but he was invisible, holed up in some

manuka on a tiny knoll.

I gave voice to the caller, concentrating on the exact spot, and was rewarded with movement. Dropping down, I zoomed in the scope to check a shaky branch and saw colour; the dark tones of a fallow stag. I needed to clearly identify the target so waited. It moved again and an antler and front leg materialised.

I centred the crosshairs and its sixth sense told him I was there; he looked directly at me, coiled like a spring. I fired - and spring he did!

I heard him crashing away but knew the shot was good, so I sat and listened for more sounds. There were none, so I gave it another five minutes.

Moving to where it’d last been, I was greeted with churned earth and blood splatter on the tiny leaves, so set about tracking him. He’d only made thirty-five yards before collapsing, dead. His antlers were not palmed but thick and even; a trophy for most hunters.

With light fading, I gutted it and hung it in a tree to cool. Using my headlamp, I backtracked to the still warm spiker and did the same. By the time the work was done, my headlamp was also fading, so I made

a bed of pine needles and prepared for a long night; I’d hump the deer out at first light. However, a cold rain set in and I knew I had to get out of that freezing environment. By the time I made the track I was

In the winter of 1958 I was hunting deer and pigs on Les Bennett’s farm in Lees Valley. My dad, and Jock McCoy, a wellknown Canterbury deerstalker, made up the party. I was armed with a single shot BSA .303 lady’s target rifle.

Leaving the valley on dark in a 1938 Ford V8 loaded with deer skins, we drove onto the Bailey bridge only to belly flop off the far end and into a mass of swollen flood water.

Saved by Les’ old Fordson tractor, we stayed at the homestead till everything dried out.

The next swamping came from the Mikonui near Ross, around 1969. Athol Robertson and I had arrived at the road end in his late model

Land Rover, where people parked and then walked the defined horse track. Not Athol; he had complete faith in his Land Rover and followed the Mikonui Flats to a tame looking side creek. however, it was actually silt over quick sand. The Rover sank to floor level.

Two days later, after walking out to Ross, we insisted the aid of a tractor to retrieve us.

Around 1980 I was beating a trail over land bordering the Grey River and spotted three deer. Trying to head them off, I edged along the riverbank but struck soft sand. Without warning the Hilux sank, so it was a long walk back to fetch the cocky’s tractor - a purty wee Fergie!

After an hour of struggling, the Hilux suddenly gave a few sucks and squelches ... and came out. Sand and silt had penetrated everything and it required a major cleanup.

I hunted the Whitcombe Valley with three mates and met up with Alan Weir. He’s stashed his Land Rover below the Louper and offered us a lift.

The river was running high and milky with snow melt but Alan, being well versed in seemingly suicidal activities, sorted out the most suitable ford. Yeah right - LOOK a flying pig!

Hunting deer with a thermal imager Unless you have actually used a thermal imager, it is hard to describe how effective these devices are for spotting animals. It is a product that never loses its wow factor, because it isn’t the device, but what it enables you to see, that is so outstanding.

WHAT IS A THERMAL IMAGER? A thermal imager (infrared camera) displays an image formed from radiant heat emitted by objects, which, unlike white light, can penetrate mist, smoke, and foliage.

All objects radiate heat, enabling the thermal imager to form a clear image in daylight or at night. Because animals are hotter than their surroundings, they stand out like bright beacons.

HUNTING WITH A THERMAL IMAGER A thermal imager will show where the animals are in one quick sweep. If an animal is there, you will spot it instantly, even if it were hiding behind light foliage. A thermal imager can also spot fresh sign, and aid in carcass recovery. I will briefly describe three common hunting techniques that benefit from thermal imaging.

BUSH AND GENERAL STALKING Deer hiding in sun-dappled foliage are incredibly hard to spot even with binoculars.

A thermal imager will enable you to spot and positively identify your target, even if it is partially obscured.

My favourite thermal imagers for this type of hunting is the Pulsar Quantum XD19s, which is especially suited for bush work due to its large field-of-view, and the Pulsar Quantum XD38s, which has a longer range, and is ideal for general hunting.

SPOTTING GAME AT DISTANCE One morning, during a trip to Tekapo, I used a Pulsar Quantum thermal imager to scan crown land next to Tekapo Station. A quick sweep of the

So start building your mountain fitness, on your local hills - a great advantage of living in NZ. Then off to the range to make sure the rifle is up to the mark for the coming spring. And if you are thinking of joining the long range rifle brigade, now is the time to start getting the new rifle, optics and ammunition sorted. And don’t skimp on the quality of products bought. We all know that it’s not hard

to shoulder shoot a red deer at close range, and a rifle that’s not precisely accurate at close range won’t matter too much. But if you are trying a long range shot on the tops at say 500 plus metres, you had better have everything well sorted, and we won’t go into what happens if its late evening and the light’s fading fast. That cheaper quality scope suddenly isn’t such a shit hot idea after all. Remember if you can’t see it clearly, the chances of a quick clean kill start to rapidly diminish.

And finally remember to take some additional ammunition to do some long range practise in the real world of the mountains, after you have got a couple for the freezer. Good shooters get good by putting in lots of real world trigger time at realistic targets. And we don’t want to hear moans about the cost of good products, as there are very few free lunches in the real world. Hot barrels.

The Challenger Scallop Enhancement Company (CSECO) manages the harvest and enhancement plans for the commercial sector for scallops in in SCA7, and regulates the fishery by means of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MPI. The Challenger Company, in turn, is governed by a board of directors numbering 10, two of whom are current commercial skippers, and there is one recreational fishing representative.

Under the memorandum, CSECO is required to undertake a survey (pursuant to the Fisheries Act 1996) to determine biomass and give indications on bay by bay extraction or utilisation. The survey is usually undertaken by NIWA and results are forwarded to MPI. The other half of the equation is then balanced against sustainability that ensures fish for future generations.

Advice from this process is compiled in a document called the Final Advice Paper (FAP) and forwarded to the Minister for Primary Industries, who then is able to complete his statutory obligations and provide decisions for the particular fishery.

As part of this process, CSECO provided consultation meetings on 13 and 14 July in Nelson. Recommendations from these meetings have since been made to CSECO and included in the Harvest Proposal Document, soon to completed and forwarded to MPI.

The survey has shown promise in a new Tasman Bay area extending from Pepin Island along the eastern shore line to Cape Souci. The area is large, with a possible biomass of 72 t, and CSECO’s harvest proposal is to take 15 t from this area. The scallops are in a depth ranging from 20 to 30 metres, so possibly too deep for most recreational vessels. However, there is a more suitable scallop bed for recreational fishers in the shallower waters of Delaware Bay. This year, nine trawlers will be involved in commercial dredging, which normally starts in the second week of September and lasts for about 20 days. The reason starting later than recreational fishers is due to market driven demands. Scallops are harvested at 90mm for both sectors but, commercially, the optimum scallop condition is based on meat weight and a count from 70 to 80 - usually 12 to 15 grams.

Within the MS the following areas are closed to commercial fishers: Vynnings and Ketu Bay. Guards Bank again looks the most promising, with good biomass levels at the time of the May survey and a further three months growth to add to the legal size limit.

Spat spit the dummy As the name suggests, a core function of the Challenger Scallop Enhancement Company is enhancement, but this year has been a year from hell in terms of spat catching. Both scallop and mussel industries have collected virtually no spat despite lines being in the water an extra month. CSECO has made the decision to relocate and is in the process of moving spat farms from Golden Bay to Kaiteriteri in Tasman Bay. Any spat collected from the new sites will be reseeded, which will be a win-win situation for recreational and commercial.

CSECO also has a special project in the wings: a PHD student is being brought in to do a thesis on the best areas for reseeding, with a key aim being to give spat the best chances of surviving and flourishing into viable populations.

Sam springs a surprise on the kids

Spring – it’s something people do to get out of bed, or take action, or a person can be wound up like one.

Yet it can also be a very dangerous time on the water. Tides are stronger and winds change rapidly to catch out the unwary. Many boats are launched for the first time since last season and spring uncoils poor maintenance issues. New skippers and fledgling operators take to the water but do they really know what to do? Spring also means more vessels out due to warmer weather, but still the dangers lurk.

We will call him Sam. Sam sprung out of bed at 0500 and dressed quickly, as he could hear the excitement of the kids in the hallway. The family were going for their first outing on the water. The new cruiser attached to the back of the ute glistened in the dawning light as they approached the ramp.

Sam did well for his first time launch and his partner waved farewell from the shore as he and the kids idled out through the wakening marina. The sun rose slowly over the back of Pepin Island and the red beacons confirmed the channel exit from the marina and the route toward The Cut. The beautiful still morning interrupted only by the steady drone of the outboard as Sam followed another vessel to sea.

• Bung’s in – ooops, perhaps he should have checked before but yes, it was – check.

• Fuel – tanks are full – check.

• Fishing rods and tackle – check.

• Wife is expecting us home after 1500 – check.

Sam and the kids roared towards d’Urville Island on a slight sea with little wind and were fishing by 0900 hours. They were immediately

rewarded with a 10 pound snapper.

Sam checked the visible sky but didn’t notice the cloud creeping from the south. Fishing continued until Sam noticed the boat rocking a bit more than usual. A scream alerted him that one of the kids had been hurt. Sure enough, a three-pronged jig dug angrily into a little hand, impaling the child. The little trickle of blood denying the seriousness of this injury.

It took Sam a good half hour to stabilise his young patient, weigh anchor, ensure everyone was ready to return and head home. As Sam mused about how grateful he was to have attended a recent first aid course, he rounded the top of d’Urville to run straight into a short sharp nasty sea from the south. The young person in considerable pain and discomfort ensured Sam kept his foot down and so his boat pounded back toward The Cut. If only he had a radio, a weather forecast would have told Sam strong southerlies were due that day.

Crack… an ominous sound from the bow.

‘Slow down,’ he thought, but the young one, brave as he was clearly, needed more medical assistance. The cell phone bounced from Sam’s hand over the side as his perilous journey at speed caused the boat to pound heavily.

Perhaps Sam and the kids fared well, we never did find out. At 1600 the search commenced….

Spring: a time when things change rapidly and it’s hard to predict the weather.

Cast Back in Time Which Fly? Frank Cartwright

I first fished with a fly in 1949 during my second year at high school. Self taught and full of optimism, my first effort to replicate an aquatic insect consisted of a wet fly, with a maggot threaded around the hook bend. Cast across a ripple and allowed to dead drift, it was surprisingly successful on Dunedin’s Leith stream.

Was it bait fishing or was it fly? I like to think it was fly, because fishing without a maggot, I still managed to catch the odd trout.

Over time I came to the conclusion it wasn’t necessary to be too fussy with fly patterns. It was more important to focus on locating trout and making a proper presentation of whatever fly.

I read “the best fly to use is a brownish, greenish thing about half an inch long,” although obviously said tongue-in-cheek, Frank Sawyer’s Killer Bug is a classic example of a “brownish, greenish thing,” put together with just copper wire and darning wool.

Nothing else needed. No head, no wingcase. Simplicity itself.

The world of fly fishers is confronted by a multitude of fly patterns that are mainly reinventions of standard patterns, be they wets, drys, nymphs, lures or whatever. My philosophy is to keep it simple and stick with a minimum of standard flies rather than clutter up fly boxes with fanciful variations. However, I confess to having flies which I will never use such as Grey Darters, gifted to me by the late Norman Marsh, or flies swapped with overseas anglers. They are special and cherished items.

So which fly is the best fly for you? As a rule of thumb, it’s the one you have the most success, because success breeds success.

My fly preferences are: Dry flies: Adams, Black Gnat, green or brown Humpy.

Nymphs: Pheasant Tail, Hare & Copper, Stonefly,

Copper Nymph.

Wet flies: Greenwell’s Glory, Waipahi Red, Partridge & Orange.

Lures: Woolly Bugger, Parson’s Glory, Grey Ghost.

BEEN THERE DONE THAT Dear Ed, Bill Hartley in issue 116 makes us aware of the cost of replacement batteries for emergency position indicating beacons. Faced with the same dilemma I was told by the EPIRB dealer to throw away the existing battery pack and they would send another (at exorbitant cost). Being of a curious nature, I couldn’t discard it without first looking inside the pack.

To my amazement, I found six torch batteries joined together to rate 9volts. You can do it yourself but I would not recommend that course of action. Instead, go to some expert such as Battery Master in Christchurch.

You can re-power at a fraction of the cost.

Health (OSH) is madly out of control and government is meekly going along with it. OSH is proposing reforms that will understandably make farmers nervous about letting the public onto their property for bona-fide access for fishing, hunting, shooting or even tramping.

Thankfully, one political party is alert and concerned. NZ First’s leader Winston Peters has assured the public, especially outdoors people, that New Zealand First is on the case.

Back in May NZ First expressed concerns about the so-called reforms. Under the ‘reforms’, farms will become ‘worksites’ and make farmers liable for all ‘visitors’, be they anglers, hunters or trampers. Worse still, the reaction of nervous farmers will be to erect ‘no entry’ signs.

The finesse of fishing groundbait and hookbait With fellow fanatic Aaron describing coarse fishing techniques I thought I’d write this month about baits. Apart from anglers targeting perch with lures, coarse anglers generally rely on bait to tempt their quarry.

The most readily available choices are tinned sweetcorn, white bread or luncheon meat, straight from the supermarket shelf, along with worms gathered from the compost heap but the coarse angler’s favourite bait must surely be maggots!

In Europe and even Australia, commercial maggot breeders produce live bait for the angling market but not in New Zealand. If we want maggots for bait the options are to flip over an ageing piece of road-kill, or to breed them and most of us will do the latter.

A source of meat is required for flies to lay their eggs on and for the maggots to eat. My personal choice is lambs’ or ox hearts. Others use fish, chicken, or carcasses from the last hunting trip but for the best results the meat should be fresh. Once blown, the term given to a clump of fly eggs visible on the meat, the whole lot is wrapped snugly in newspaper and left in a shady place for about a week until the maggots are fully grown. If the right amount of blow is obtained all the meat will be eaten by the maggots and the process is surprisingly not too stinky! Once mature, the maggots crawl around looking for a place to pupate and I like to keep the newspaper parcels in a large tub of bran to catch the maggots as they wriggle out. Live maggots can be kept for several weeks in the fridge but a dedicated appliance is recommended, as most wives don’t take too kindly to grubs in the butter!

As a certain amount of bait is required for loose feeding - throwing into the water to attract fish

- as well as putting on the hook, large quantities are sometimes required and most anglers will breed several pints of maggots before major competitions.

A key factor to successful bait fishing is to attract fish to your baited hook and in much the same way as sea anglers use berley, coarse anglers will introduce groundbait and free samples of their hookbait into the area or ‘swim’ being fished.

Groundbait generally consists of breadcrumbs moistened with water, before being moulded into balls and thrown into the swim. Many coarse anglers also like to add flavourings to increase the attractiveness of the groundbait and again, the supermarket offers a whole range of options. Flavours such as strawberry, vanilla and molasses are popular but unusual choice such as crushed peanuts, curry powder or bird seed have all been tried.

There is an art in how much feed to introduce to the swim. Too much and the fish won’t find your hookbait, too little and the shoal may swim away. To my mind, correct feeding is the most critical part of coarse fishing and will determine whether you catch a fish or two, or a truckload!

Good anglers will be able to adjust their feed pattern according to the signs they are getting from the fish, such as frequency of bites or how confident the bites are, the size of fish being caught or where in the swim the fish are lying.

Remember, in most coarse fishing situations, the fish are not visible to the angler, so we can’t just pop on the polaroids and check out what’s going on, it’s all about working it out. That’s what makes coarse fishing so absorbing.

I would like to thank the Tautuku Fishing Club for donating the three blue sharks to the Department of Zoology for the Fish Form and Feeding lab.

In this lab the students were looking at the external form of a range of fish and dissecting them to think about where they live, how they swim, and what they eat. Having large animals available for the students to examine adds an additional level of interest.

As the lab is repeated over three days, having three blue sharks was ideal. Each day a group of students would volunteer to work with the shark. Then the class would look at the dissected shark to think about its key structures. I would point out the large liver that assists with buoyancy, the spiral valve in the intestine to increase the surface area for digestion, the long snout with the openings of the electrical detection system present as small jelly filled channels, and the streamlined shape and the large lift generating pectoral fins and heteroceral tail.

The gut contents were very interesting, as we found the ‘day-two’ shark was eating mid-sized spiny dogfish. What was more interesting was as a pelagic shark, as it had been to the floor of the ocean and had taken a razor shell and a hermit crab in a large shell. There was also a large spine from an elephant shark. That this shark was feeding in the water column on other shark, as well as on the bottom, was an interesting piece of information for students when they have to put together an educated guess on what the blue shark does for a living. The ‘day-three’ shark Tautuku had bony fish in its gut.

Coastlines Just The Way It Is A bunch of us Trev’s from Southland and the West Coast had parked ourselves at Neil’s Beach, Jackson Bay. After winning enough fillets to satisfy needs and getting sore arms from cranking them up from the depths, we decided to play tourists for a day.

This far south the roads are few and don’t go through to somewhere else - no exit is a given. One of these roads led to a location we’d spotted from far out at sea: the eye catching Red Hills, coloured by minerals within their flanks. Wanting a closer look, we discovered the journey is oft just as important as the destination. Turning away from the Haast Jackson Bay road at the Arawhata, we made our way up the narrow gravelled Jackson River Road for kilometre after beautiful kilometre. Layers of green beech forest lined the road and river flats stretched from the bends in the crystal clear water-way; long deep pools with the river flowing under overhanging forests and back

Cameras whirred and clacked at each stop, briefly breaking the natural silence.

We caught up with a bunch of riders enjoying their organised horse trek - can’t think of a better place to be astride a horse on such a nice day.

Crossing the section of river draining Lake Ellery, we turned into a layby for a walk upstream. This water was slow moving, littered with logs, tea-stained and dark, so fish were noticed only when there was the odd rise in the darker waters. The track meandered through cathedrals of tall straight trunks, their canopies pierced by shafts of sunlight, producing an atmosphere so peaceful, it moved our conversation into brief, quiet, respectful exchanges.

A signal moment – respectful exchanges are not the norm for us lot!

Then we met a bloke with perhaps one of the best jobs in the world – track maintenance. Mind you, it wasn’t raining and the sand-flies were lunching

Back to the truck and on until the road left the river, winding up through the hills dividing the Jackson and the Cascade - remote for the early families who made it their home. A plaque on a roadside rock is dedicated to the region’s pioneers. It’s a very nice touch by the Nolan family, recognising those gone before who farmed when work and transport predated modern technology.

Tough, hardy people.

Alongside, panels inform of the geology of the Red Hills and the colourful ‘Explorer Douglas’, who lived for long stretches in the southern mountains trying to find a convenient way through to Otago. The fella had fortitude.

After marvelling at the rouge of the Red Hills and scanning the amazing Cascade’s vast flats, we stopped at one last eye-catching riverside spot.

Here some felt compelled to wander off individually to reflect on the incredible natural environment we are privileged to live in.

This is South Westland and this is how we like it - just the way it is.

After giving my partner a kiss goodbye, I was told in no uncertain terms to bring home a salmon and not to be late to dinner at her parents on Sunday night. No worries I thought, the canals hold plenty of fish and I have the whole weekend.

Upon arrival I set up with a Gulp! soft bait and began casting away. There were several others fishing and although there wasn’t a lot happening, I saw the odd fish come in. Just a matter of time and I’ll be on the board, surely.

Well the hours ticked by and I didn’t have a fish to show for it! Heading to the pub to watch the mighty Highlanders win the Super 15, I went to sleep reassured that underdogs can win and tomorrow’s another day.

Sadly not much changed! My mate landed a nice fish but once again I was the unlucky one.

Running out of time, I decided a change of tactics was my last hope so I stopped at the Tekapo canal and set up with a shrimp. I began to get a few

Fish Profile – Kahawai

The kahawai, the most maligned of our fish species and often relegated to the bait bucket, has probably introduced more people to fishing than any other species and kilo for kilo is the scrappiest fish in our waters.

It is distinguished by an elongated streamlined body, high front dorsal fin and silver through to a greenish-blue colour, with irregular dark markings along the back. It is sometimes referred to as a sea trout or salmon, but is not related to either of these two species.

Juvenile kahawai have silver flanks rising to a blue-green back, but are easily distinguished from adults by the rows of vertical brown spots along the flanks.

At maturity the average size reaches 40-50 cm and 2-4kg, but they can grow upwards of 70cm. Common kahawai have been caught over 7 kg. Kahawai have suffered from heavy commercial pressure.

A larger species known as the Kermadec kahawai is found in Northland waters, The Three Kings, the Kermadec, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. These fish grow larger than the common kahawai, reaching sizes of around 15kg.

Kaikoura. They have been caught in depths of 150m, but more commonly in water under 50m.

Kahawai move in shoals of similar sized fish and will cruise a diverse range of habitats, from open water to harbours, rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, estuaries and some distance up river.

These fish are known to be migratory and spawning is thought to take place between September and early December. Kahawai grow moderately quickly and are believed to live up to 25 years.

Distribution

Kahawai need to be bled when caught and chilled immediately, as deterioration is rapid. Flesh is firm with a darkish tinge, but cooks up white and succulent with mild-strong flavour; suits, frying, baking, smoking and light grilling.

A pelagic species living mainly in the mid-top water columns, kahawai are widespread throughout our coastal waters, but predominantly an inshore species and most abundant north of

Targeting Kahawai Kahawai are great scrappers and best targeted on light tackle of 4-6kg. They are probably one of the easiest caught species, hence their popularity with beginning anglers, taking baits, jigs, lures and flasher rigs. Ledger rigs, stray lines and running rigs with hook sizes of 3-6/0 would cover most situations and they will take a variety of baits, but prefer cut fresh fish baits.

When surface feeding kahawai are suckers for a small lure trolled some distance behind the boat. Spinning at river mouths is also a popular method of targeting kahawai.

A bead of sweat ran down my face. I knew I was now risking being late to dinner as well as going home empty handed, an unimaginably cruel fate.

I could hear their voices already, “I went to all this effort to cook and you didn’t turn up.”

“You went ALL that way and didn’t catch anything?”

Ding-a-ling-ding: the ring of the bell on my rod signalling a bite snapped me back to reality.

Picking up my rod, I could feel the weight and head shakes of a bigger fish on the other end.

Heart in mouth I began the battle. Of course my mate had chosen this moment to go find a toilet, with the net in his boot. After a solid battle and a jog 100m downstream, I was able to beach a nice big salmon. Phew, what a weight off my shoulders!

In the end I was late to dinner, but a large fillet of salmon kept everyone happy and, most importantly, my reputation as a successful hunter gather was kept intact!
