The Filter As we wrap up a year marked by transformation and resilience, we’re already looking ahead with excitement to the upcoming AIOH conference an opportunity to reconnect, reflect, and reimagine together.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our current president, Aleks, for his dedicated service and leadership throughout this dynamic year. His guidance has helped steer us through change with clarity and purpose.

AIOH BASIC PRINCIPLES OF OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE COURSES With 2025 coming to a close, our final BPC courses were presented in Brisbane (September) and Perth (October).

2025 was a big year with 8, week-long Basic Principles of OH courses presented in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, with a total of 152 students attending.

Congratulations to all who attended and passed the OHTA201 course!

While each course runs like a well-oiled machine, behind the scenes an enormous amount of work goes into the logistics of venues, student registrations and all the other moving parts that are required to relocate our cases of equipment and materials around the country. We would like to acknowledge the huge effort that goes into this by our fabulous support crew in the AIOH office: Claire Phypers, Kelly Phypers and Alicia Gorman. We’d also like to give a shout-out to Sharann Johnson who coordinates the OHTA201 exams for us.

AIOH Basic Principles of Occupational Hygiene Courses To finish the year, we have some more memories to share from one of our alumni. While Peter Aspinall attended the BPC about 20 years ago and now is involved in presenting it, he still remembers the impact of being inspired by facilitators Barry Chesson and Julia Norris!

What is your current Job Title?

My current title is Principal Certified Occupational Hygienist – with my role now being focused on providing health and hygiene risk assessments and causation advice to the Insurance and Loss Adjusting industries.

The BPC was my first step towards my membership with the AIOH and my Masters in Occupational Hygiene studies through UOW.

At the time of attending my first BPC, I was working for AirMet Scientific and reporting to Peter Shiels who was supportive of the sales team obtaining the BPC knowledge in order to talk the language of hygienists.

Why did you sign up for the BPC?

Did the BPC influence your decision to enter or remain in the OH field?

The BPC helped me identify opportunities where the Air-Met products (which included the SKC range of equipment and consumables) could be better promoted, and it also enabled us to provide educated recommendations and product solutions to support hygienist needs.

At the time of attending my first BPC, I was working for AirMet Scientific and reporting to Peter Shiels who was supportive of the sales team obtaining the BPC knowledge in order to talk the language of hygienists.

The BPC helped me identify opportunities where the Air-Met products (which included the SKC range of equipment and consumables) could be better promoted, and it also enabled us to provide educated recommendations and product solutions to support hygienist needs.

No one topic of BPC profoundly influenced me at the time, however the practical sessions and actual hands on with sampling equipment, building sampling trains and the mock assessment practices enlightened me.

These practical sessions made me realise how (with my SKC product knowledge from Air-Met sales training) I could further contribute to product knowledge & understanding to enable me to contribute to future BPC sessions.

What aspect of the course influenced you the most in your This experience also highlighted how I could use my practical current career? knowledge, to better help new hygienists to get the best from their equipment and to ensure quality sampling programs.

This is an area that I still feel passionate about today and regularly encourage hygienists to do more and get more out of their OH tools.

Would you recommend the course to future Occupational Hygienists?

I have been fortunate to have assisted the delivery of the AIOH course material over the years with other hygiene legends such as Terry Gorman, Hendo, Jen Hines, & Mel Cox to name just a few.

I’ve introduced this course to a number of clients and businesses as the minimum experience expectation for their safety and hygiene teams.

I’ve seen first-hand how it can awaken even seasoned Safety professionals, and experienced Occupational Physicians to the world of Occupational Hygiene.

Why would you recommend the course to others?

One amazing thing I see is that the BPC presenter passion for the course material that I felt all that time ago is still seen in those delivering the material today.

For me, presenting this material is an opportunity to give back to the OH community and share my knowledge and experience with those new to the industry.

The delivery of practical application sessions of the BPC material is one area that I know is regularly still getting high praise and appreciation from students coming through the courses today.

As 2025 draws to a close, we’ve been busy behind the scenes at AIOH and there’s plenty of exciting news to share. From updates to our membership and certification journey, to awards, Council activities, and program enhancements, we’ve been working to make your membership experience smoother, more valuable, and more engaging.

A quick reminder for all members: please ensure you are using AIOH logos and post-nominals correctly to maintain your professional standing. This includes MAIOH, FAIOH, and COH. Misuse can impact consistency across the profession.

We have opened registrations for the 44th AIOH Annual General Meeting (AGM), as well as the opportunity for Full and Fellow members to vote for the General Councillor position for 2026–27. Voting is to select one of the four members who have put up their hand to join Council, a great sign of the enthusiasm and commitment within our membership.

Thank you to everyone stepping up to contribute to the Institute’s future. An email was sent via the AGM platform, Vero Voting (please check your spam folder if you haven’t seen it). Attendance at the AGM is open to all members, and we encourage you to join either in person or via the online platform.

Year in Review This past year has been another busy and rewarding one for AIOH. From Council activities and volunteer contributions to the continued growth and engagement of our membership, we’ve seen many highlights. Looking Ahead to 2026 Membership Subscription Program In early 2026 we will introduce a subscription payment program for membership renewals. This initiative is designed to help members manage costs in today’s challenging environment while keeping connected and engaged with AIOH throughout the year. While overall membership has grown, retention has historically been limited at the Associate level. This program aims to make maintaining membership easier and more accessible, supporting members to stay active and supported.

Early Award Submissions In 2026, we aim to open AIOH Award submissions earlier in the year, giving members more time to prepare and submit applications. These awards are significant milestones in a member’s career, offering recognition, professional growth, and industry visibility.

Profile Updates and Program Enhancements The AIOH Member Profile section has been delayed due to updates in the Industry and Experience sectors. We aim to have this fully launched in January 2026, providing members with an enhanced platform to showcase their professional journey. Additionally, several new frameworks are proposed to strengthen programs and add even more value to membership, offering innovative ways to engage, learn, and develop professionally.

Looking Beyond 45 As we look beyond 45 years as an Institute, 2026 promises to be a year of growth, connection, and celebration. With subscription options, early awards, updated profiles, and strengthened programs, members will have more ways than ever to engage and advance in their professional journey.

Stay in the Loop – Check Your Emails All official AIOH communication comes via email, including event invites, renewal reminders, EOIs, committee calls, and Council updates. Make sure you’re getting them by: Checking your junk or spam folder regularly Confirming your email address is correct in MYAIOH Adding @aioh.org.au to your safe sender list Missing an email could mean missing deadlines or opportunities. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to 2025 President Aleks Todorovic, whose seven-year term on Council has now concluded. Having worked alongside Aleks for the past 4.5 years, I’ve seen first hand his unwavering commitment, support, and contribution to AIOH. While he will not be on Council in 2026, we are delighted that he will remain part of our community and continue to support the Institute in other ways.

At the same time, we are thrilled to welcome Kelly Johnstone as President. This marks an exciting time for AIOH as we look ahead to new opportunities, initiatives, and growth under Kelly’s leadership.

MID-TERM REVIEW OF THE NATIONAL RETURN TO WORK STRATEGY 2020–2030 The mid-term review of the National Return to Work Strategy 2020–2030 (the Strategy) has been published.

The Strategy provides a 10-year framework to drive and leverage national action to improve return to work outcomes for workers with a work-related injury or illness.

The review examined the effectiveness of the Strategy after its first 5 years of implementation and identified key challenges and opportunities requiring more focus in its remaining 5 years.

MEDIA RELEASE: HANNAFORD CONVICTED OF CATEGORY 2 OFFENCE Mr Benjamin Hannaford was convicted of a Category 2 offence by the ACT Industrial Court Magistrate. The Magistrate considered the offence warranted a fine of $10,000, the penalty was reduced to $8,000 due to a guilty plea. The Magistrate also imposed 100 hours of community service and 12 months good behaviour bond.

Courses are powered by Kurolms AIOH Fundamentals of Dust About this course Dust occurs naturally and from man-made activities like driving on a dirt road or sawing a piece of timber. In most workplaces, dust is considered problematic and a hazard, especially as dust can impact your health. This course is designed to give you a fundamental level of knowledge and understanding of dust. You will learn what dust is, how to identify dust and the risks associated, the negative health effects of dust, and the controls use to manage the risks associated with dust.

AIOH Mould Cleaning for Cleaners About this course Mould is everywhere. It's a naturally occurring organism that plays an important role in nature's ecosystem.

Low levels of mould can virtually be found everywhere, even in the most sterile rooms. Mould may grow indoors in wet or moist areas lacking adequate ventilation, including walls/ wallpaper, ceilings, bathroom tiles, carpets, insulation material and wood.

AIOH Mould Awareness About this course If moisture accumulates in a building mould growth will often occur. Mould affects people differently depending on their health and the type of mould. It can cause nasal and sinus congestion, hay fever, sore throats, headaches, eye irritations, body rashes and other aches and pains. Mould not only has the potential to cause health problems, but it can also cause damage to the buildings and surfaces it inhabits. AIOH's Mould Awareness online training module is designed to help learners identify mould, understand the conditions that can promote mould growth and develop an awareness of the steps for safely managing the presence of mould.

Call for Presenters The ASBESTOS 2026 Conference will serve as a critical platform to share knowledge, showcase best practice, and drive change, ensuring that awareness leads to action, and action results in real impact for workers, communities, and future generations.

We invite you to submit a brief abstract (no more than 250 words) outlining your proposed presentation (length 15-20 minutes) that addresses our main theme and related abstract opportunities: Theme: Awareness | Action | IMPACT The conference will bring together international experts, regulators, researchers, practitioners, and community voices to explore the changing landscape of asbestos management and its human impacts. With the guiding theme of Awareness | Action | IMPACT, the program is structured into three streams, each addressing critical aspects of the asbestos journey — from understanding risks to implementing solutions and supporting those affected.

The webinar will highlight South Africa’s 20-year journey to reduce and eliminate respirable crystalline silica exposure – driven by strengthened regulations, advanced dust-control technologies, industry collaboration, and robust worker education initiatives. These coordinated efforts have led to dramatic reductions in dust levels and silicosis cases, offering valuable lessons for mining and industrial sectors everywhere while underscoring the need for continued vigilance.

Participants will also explore practical tools and methods that support more efficient and proactive risk management from research out of Australia. Participants will learn about a portable, validated system for generating dust to support pre-work risk assessments and the calibration of portable FTIR instruments for silica measurement. The session will discuss how this research reinforces the need for best practices when using real-time dust monitors. Hisexpertise spans mining, smelters, andrefineries, and he has contributed tokeyindustry guidance, including ICMMsafety and health standards.

David Noi holds a PhD from the University of Wollongong in Australia where he is currently an academic teaching in the occupational hygiene and the occupational health and safety programs. His research focuses on respirable crystalline silica (RCS), engineered stone, and real-time measurement. He was part of the first intake of the Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) at the IOHA 2024 conference in Dublin. David is also a member of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienist (AIOH).
