SMALL TOWN SURVIVAL

You readers are probably beginning to think that I am a “small town advocate� and perhaps I am. I often write positive thoughts about small towns and I am proud to admit that it is the little mom-and-pop shops in these little communities where I prefer to spend my hard earned dollars. I loathe Walmart and other large businesses that have put many independent merchants out of business and try to do my part to support those remaining (and often struggling) stores.

While millions of folks were on the highways and byways traveling to see the solar eclipse on August 21, my friend and I were en route to Omaha to have my head examined. Seriously, after the removal of a brain tumor several years ago, I have to have an MRI and exam by specialists on an annual basis, and early morning on the 22nd was when the long awaited appointments were to begin, thus making the trip on Eclipse Day necessary.

Fearing traffic problems, we took back roads into Nebraska, traveling on Highway 12, which runs easterly and parallel to the Missouri River, to near Sioux City, we then traveled South to Omaha. It was a beautiful drive, but what I enjoyed the most was visiting some interesting small towns along the way.

The first stop was at Spencer, Nebraska, home to less than 500 residents. Although this little burg has a couple small man-

ufacturing companies and is home to the area high school, it certainly appears to have a thriving business community. In fact, they have a beautiful new business called “63 Co. General Store & CafĂŠ.â€? Of course, we had to stop and check this out, especially due to the fact that it has a beautiful barn quilt near the entrance. There was everything, from quality hardware to sewing supplies, all sorts of giftware, school supplies and basic clothing items. The east side of the building contained an excellent cafĂŠ where we ate a delicious dinner before traveling on.

We drove through numerous other small communities and the next stop was at Crofton, Nebraska, another well groomed small town, boasting a population of around 700 residents. We drove down several streets and admired the many businesses that, although I’m sure some are striving to be successful, seemed to cater well to an agriculture community as well as sportsmen, with the Missouri River only 10 miles away. After having a delicious coffee stop at Crofton, our next stop was at Lyons, Nebraska (Population 850) where we gassed up for the remaining journey.

Heading south in the direction of Omaha, the oncoming traffic was horrific due to folks returning to northern states after watching the eclipse, and soon the city traffic of Omaha was

upon us, making us sorry we had to leave those three little towns we had just visited. Everyone seemed to be in a hurry, whether in a vehicle or at an unfriendly restaurant where we ate a bite of supper, or checking into a hotel. It seems that business comes easy in large metropolitan areas while folks in the small agricultural communities appreciate what little business they receive, are friendly, and work hard to earn your support.

Thankfully, my medical appointments were at the west end of Omaha and as soon as they were completed, we were on our way back to God’s country‌the country. We did stop at a nice little shop at Meadow Grove, Nebraska (pop. 301) and bought a couple gifts; gassed up at Ewing, Nebraska (pop. 387); got some groceries at the Town and Country Market at Springview (pop.

242), which happens to be my favorite grocery store and is the last town before entering South Dakota and returning to my home on the range. Medical appointments and trips to Omaha are never fun, but I sure enjoyed my stops at those nice little towns along the way and admire the folks that work so hard to keep them alive.
