Chasing Waterfalls

The Inland Northwest is bursting with lakes, rivers, creeks and waterfalls. The following waterfalls will give you a great excuse to spend the day in nature.

North Idaho

Myrtle Falls: A short and pleasant .9mile out-and-back trail near Bonners Ferry leads to this waterfall.

Snow Creek Falls: A 4-mile round-trip hike near Bonners Ferry that accesses two waterfalls in one trail.

Copper Falls: A 1.4-mile loop trail near the Canadian border that climbs the hill through gentle switchbacks to the falls.

Granite Falls: A 1.5-mile round-trip hike near Priest Lake that follows the Granite Creek to the falls.

Kootenai Falls: A 1.6-mile round-trip hike near Libby that crosses a swinging bridge and offers views of the falls.

Yaak Falls: A roadside attraction near Troy that can be seen from a viewing platform or a short walk along the river.

www.visitidaho.org

Eastern Washington

Hog Canyon Falls: Located in the serene Palouse region and a mere 30 minutes away from Spokane.

Hawk Creek Falls: Gracefully descend over a rocky ledge, creating a tranquil

16

pool below, perfect for cooling off during the warmer months.

Towell Falls: A captivating natural attraction within the rolling hills of the Palouse region.

Exley Falls: Marking an exquisite natural landmark, cascades 45 feet into a serene inlet of Horseshoe Lake.

Douglas Falls: Offers a comprehensive outdoor experience that offers a variety of recreational activities set against a backdrop of lush landscapes and historic charm.

Crystal Falls: This accessible natural wonder, with a total descent of over 60 feet through a series of cascades ending in a dramatic 30-foot plunge.

Sweet Creek Falls: The path to the falls winds past the echoes of the past, including an old mining shaft, bridging the gap between the adventurous spirits of yesterday and today.

Spokane Falls: Its power alone leads us into understanding why the Native American tribes considered the place sacred. A striking emblem of natural beauty interwoven with urban development, stands as the largest urban waterfall in the United States.

Peewee Falls: Standing as a monumental cascade of 233 feet, claims the title of the tallest freestanding waterfall in Northeast Washington.

Palouse Falls: Stands as a majestic testament to the natural grandeur of WA State, cascading 198 feet into a dramatic basin set against the unique backdrop of the channeled scablands. www.northwestwaterfalls.com

What Is Equine Therapy?

Equine therapy involves engaging in activities with horses while being supervised by a mental health professional. Activities include grooming, feeding, and leading the horse. The goals of this therapy include developing skills such as emotional regulation, selfconfidence, and responsibility.

Horses have been used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times. Equine therapy can be used with various populations, including children, teens, adults, families, and groups. It complements traditional talk therapy by offering an experiential outdoor experience that engages all senses.

Equine therapy may help with depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, and other mental health challenges. It can also benefit individuals with physical disabilities or autism. Remember that equine therapy provides a unique and powerful way to connect with animals and explore emotions.

Drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years old in the United States.

At any time of year, lakes & rivers, can be appealing and dangerous at the same time.

Water that is warm on the surface, may be much colder below. Use caution when swimming and always supervise young children playing in or near the water. Rivers may not be moving as fast, but log jams can trap swimmers and large rocks and logs could tip over rafts, canoes, and kayaks.

Swimming in open water (lakes, rivers, ponds, and the ocean) is harder than in a pool. People tire faster and get into trouble more quickly. A person can go under water in a murky lake, making them very hard to find, or be swept away in currents.

Avoid swimming where two rivers come together – many good swimmers have gotten into trouble or drowned in currents that didn't seem to be moving that fast.

Swim in a life-guarded area, especially if you are not a strong swimmer. Be cautious of sudden drop-offs in lakes and rivers. People who can't swim or aren't strong swimmers have slipped into deeper water and drowned.

When boating, don't overload the boat and wear a life jacket that fits. Have children wear a life jacket that fits them, and watch them closely around water – they can go under water quickly and quietly.

Children 12 years old and under must wear a life jacket that fits them on moving boats less than 19 feet in length in Washington.

Check beach advisories before you go swimming.

Parents must tell their children about the dangers of open water at rivers, lakes, and beaches. Know where your child is, who they are with, and when they are expected home.

Never take your eyes off children in the water – not even for a minute! Parents may think they'll hear splashing and screaming when a child is in trouble, but when a child drowns, it usually happens quickly and silently.

Knowing how to swim doesn't make a child drown-proof. Never use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision.

Learn how to swim and teach your children how to swim. Know CPR so you can help save a life if a water emergency happens.
