About the Pride Center The Pride Center of Western New York, Inc. (Pride Center) is a 501(c)3 not for profit organiza on that was founded in 1998 by a group of individuals and business owners concerned by challenges facing LGBT communi es in all eight coun es of Western New York (WNY). The Pride Center incorporated in 2001 and received its first funding for staff and programming from the New York State Department of Health in 2002.

In 2007, the Pride Center received funding from the David Bohne Founda on to establish a regional cyber center targe ng young LGBT adults who need access to and use of the internet in a safe se ng. In 2010, the Pride Center became the organizers of the annual Pride Weekend Parades & Fes vals. Its new on-site lending library was added in 2011, and the Pride Center received funding from Department of Health AIDS Ins tute for its Transgender Health Ini a ve. In addi on to grant funding, the Pride Center is dependent on the generous support of individuals, businesses, community groups, and people like you. Thank you for your interest and on-going support. This Year’s Theme for Pride is “Fearless” Fearless were the patrons of the Stonewall Inn who inspired us to march...

Fearless were the people who dared to gather at the first rallies and marches in Buffalo... Fearless are the folks who iden fy as transgender who go out for the first me reflec ng who they truly are... Fearless are the youth who act as our Grand Marshalls and lead the march for our Pride Parade each year...

Fearless is the Dean of the Law School at the University at Buffalo who was awarded the Mwongozi Award by Kenya’s Na onal Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission for speaking out for equality and non-discrimina on and challenging nega ve a tudes and ac ons...

Throughout our history and in our daily lives, Fearless doesn’t mean being without fear. Rather, Fearless is drawing on all of our collec ve strength and calling on courage that we are not always sure is there and choosing to take ac on anyway. Fearless means being true to ourselves and working to make sure that the needs of our communi es are being met.

We are Fearless when we defy those barriers in life that try to keep us from being who we are. Some mes those barriers are the small details of everyday life that work to marginalize LGBTQ folks, and some mes those barriers are seemingly insurmountable parts of large systems such as discriminatory laws, the lack of Federal recogni on of our marriages, or the lack of culturally competent services. We are Fearless when we feel the burdens of those reali es and yet we con nue to work for organized social change.

Fearless is speaking out against bullying and engrained pop phrases such as “that’s so gay”... Fearless are the newly elected seven out members of Congress helping to lead our country and be er reflect the ci zens they serve... Fearless is the young African American trans woman walking her first ball...

Everyone who has ever a ended or marched in a Pride Parade has exhibited that fearlessness. It is the ac ons of others before us and the growing visibility and recogni on of our communi es that support our celebra ons of Pride today. As we think of Pride 2013, think of the goose bumps that form when you see our youth leading our Parade, and think of the significance of all of the media outlets covering these historic gatherings, and remember those in other countries s ll struggling for the right to march. We cannot wait to see all of the ways each of us will show how we are Fearless this Pride. This will be our rallying cry for Pride – we encourage you to show the theme in your Pride floats, by running your first 5K, a ending your first Pride, volunteering, or ge ng involved in a project to help our LGBTQ communi es. Whatever you do – be Fearless!

Meet Your 2013 Emcees!

News 4 reporter Ed Drantch has spent many hours behind the anchor desk, appearing on News 4’s “Wake Up!”, “Winging It! Buffalo Style” and filling in on various other shows. He was recently nominated for a New York State Emmy Award for his story on race-relations in the City of Buffalo. Prior to coming to Western New York, Drantch spent three years in Harrisonburg, Virginia where he served a dual role as anchor and producer of WHSV’s “News @ Noon” and headlined the “New This Morning” segment on the award-winning WHSV “Daybreak” morning news program. A Communications and Media Studies graduate from the State University of New York College at Oneonta, Drantch now lives in North Buffalo and has a miniature-schauzer named Theo.

Allie Hartwick is a producer for “Winging It! Buffalo Style” on CW23. Hartwick started at the station in 2010 after being named CW Star and began her television career hosting the morning lifestyle program. The East Aurora native attended the University of Toronto where she majored in English and Sexual Diversity Studies. Her interests include running, modern dance, and red wine.
