Is this you?

It’s Miller Time:

e Best Tweeter

Miller Moths at Is!

By Trina Machacek ere is a very slim chance that I may be the only person within shouting distance of my home who does not tweet on twitter. I do not instantly chat by snap or instantly appear on gram. Nope, not instantly or forevermore. I am not a tweeter, nor do I find enjoyment in pulling my own teeth out. But. Yes, a tweet chirping “but.” ere is one type of tweet that I do enjoy: immensely. It is the tweet of a meadowlark in the early morning just as the sun rises over the top of my mountain to the east and the dew of the night has fallen and kissed the eye-popping green acres and acres of sweet alfalfa leaves. Now that’s a twitter to tweet about. A meadow lark has this amazing talent that once you enjoy it, you will always and immediately know it. e sweet songs of birds are usually listened to and enjoyed as you sit somewhere in the sun, or if it’s hot, in the shade. Hey, the sun does have a tendency to beat down on your head—and that is why shade was invented. Bird stepping along. As the birds gather in trees and begin to talk their bird music you can hear and maybe differentiate a black bird squeak and twill from a pair of king birds chirping directions as to how the nest should be constructed. Yes, the home is a topic of discussion no matter the species. Again, hopping along. en when your day starts, all those bird songs seem to be swallowed up by the noise of your surroundings. But not the meadowlark. e songs of little bright yellow breasted friend will not go unnoticed. ere is something magical about the meadowlark and the song it sings in the mornings. Traveling in a vehicle in areas of Nevada it is like a little gi to be sung to by a meadowlark. It is, in my experience, the one bird that you can hear even when you’re moving at a nice clip of 70 miles per hour, with your windows up. How does that little bird do that? I have heard many ladies can and have also heard the passing meadowlark, and so do their other halves. But those same other halves still have a hard time listening to what the little woman sitting right beside them is saying. Imagine that! e bird and the rumor mill have a lot in common. e meadowlark could very well be the king of rumors. I mean when you look at a rumor it is something that can be heard over and above anything else that is being said. You could be talking about something important, like the price of tea in china, and someone starts talking about the newest person on the rumor chopping block. Wouldn’t you know it, that rumor birdie is heard over and above anything else. Riding a roller coaster, everyone screaming as the ride goes upside-down, but all you can hear is the rumor being talked about. Yes, just like that tweeting meadowlark as you go down the road. Radio blasting some 60’s song, kids being loud kids in the back seat, when low and behold all the chatter and screams die and all you hear is a meadowlark, also known as a rumor. Of course from where I sit, that puts a sad connotation on the lovely meadowlark. e way of the world is weird sometimes. We all go through life in steps. In regards to rumors, I may be wrong, but it seems to me that as life swirls around us we have a period where we might listen to rumors with intensity. If we keep the chain alive and growing and then even profligate them, hopefully that is just a step that we take and learn from. It’s true you know, wait long enough and you will be the subject of a rumor. AARRGGHH e best period of life is when you finally realize that listening to rumors puts you in the same pot with the teller of rumors. e best thing to do? Stop listening, even speak up and say that a rumor is not something you want to be remembered as having a part of. Go to the source of the story. Find out the truth, the real story. Keep the truth in your bag of tricks to fight a rumor. Oh yes! at silly line said by someone known as Jesus is as true today as it has ever been, “en you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Yes, free to hear the sweet tweet of the meadowlarks that cross your path along your journey. By Trina Machacek If you are older than dirt and born somewhere in the 1960’s you may remember the Mothra movies. A Japanese creation of a giant moth that invaded and did all the things giant invading moths will do. At this time of the year, mid-June, for a few weeks in Nevada, we and many other westerns states and areas, are all lucky enough to have our own versions of Mothra. On a smaller scale thank goodness. Yes, much, much smaller. What they lack in size, they certainly make up for in numbers. No doubt if you have lived in Eureka County for any number of years you have been through this wonderful miller moth fly-by. When Northern Nevada experiences large, sudden swarms of moths, it is almost always the annual migration of the army cutworm moth (commonly known as the miller moth). ese large waves of insects are highly cyclical, and their sudden numbers depend heavily on the severity of the winter. We certainly did have an exceptionally dry winter as winters go. Winter is being followed by a dry spring and summer certainly doesn’t have the look out of a rainy season either. So the moths are here. Just for a short time though. Mother earth knows what she is doing. e dry seasons make for short numbers of several bugs for the birds of our high mountains. e moths and then the cut worms aerwards are just the ticket to get our state bird, the Mountain Bluebirds, Robin Red Breasts and Yellow Beak Black birds along with so many other visiting birds fed. en as time marches on, to feed their fledglings until they are feathered out, getting them up and out of their nests. To keep the moths out of your homes it is suggested to keep windows and doors sealed and keep a good flyswatter handy! When your aim is true and you take one of these flying flutterers down, they will leave a nice poof of dust mixed with pollen and wing dirt and pieces in their wake and on your walls. e best thing to remove those spots, without spreading the leovers to a bigger ring is a damp paper towel, and perhaps with a spritz of window cleaner. Adult miller moth.
