By Trina Machacek ere is yes, partial or varying forms of falling. I am partial to the partial type of falling. Rather than being partial to the full fall. But. Yes a falling down “but.” I don’t want to toot my horn, I seem to be able to remember nearly every fall this body has taken. Come to find out it may be because I have this thing called hyperthymesia. Yeah, not there’s something to write home about.

I have wondered a lot, and been asked a lot how I come up with something to write about each week.

I mean come on. I’ve been at “Is is You?” for some 689 weeks. Now let me see. Carry the three, divide by fieen and, well the 689 is just shy of thirteen and a half years. You would think the well in my brain would run dry. But, nope. It still overflows night and day with ideas. Enter hyperthymesia. Oh my friends, that is a rare condition allowing individuals to vividly recall almost every day of their lives, typically starting around age 10. Well, I can remember back farther. Like when I was five, I was a flower girl in my dad’s nephew’s wedding. Shoot I can even remember the little dress I wore.

I thought about that wedding and dress for a very long time and oen wondered if it was just something I made up. Until one day when my family was at said dad’s nephew’s home when I was a teenager and I asked to see the wedding pictures. ere I was, all cute and stuff AND in the dress I remembered. As vivid as if I was there. It was actually strange, but reaffirming too.

So, why bring that up? Well here we go. I crash landed on the floor recently. Not a big thing. e cat zigged and I zagged and the cat food in the can I was carrying flew like the Aero Spaceline Super Guppy, (see picture) – I usually don’t use visuals, but I really like the Guppy. Moving on.

On April 10th the Eureka Vandal track field was full to capacity with the annual Eureka Invitational Meet.

Teams from around the state met for the all-day event.

As the day progressed and the races were run and events took place the most sportsmanship event took place. e kids from all the schools, boys and girls were seen congratulating, fist bumping and trading high-fives with each other. It was a great track meet with comradery and a true one for all and all for one atmosphere. Each coach should be commended for giving that love of the sport to each student.

Also this event was the last meet for the High School Seniors. In true fashion the seniors were honored and had opportunity to join with their families on the field to be recognized. en also to have some fun with each other. Here are some of those moments.

Oh, there have been many. As I am sure we all have.

When I was being taught to ride a bike, by my sister, I fell so much we finally brought the bandages and Bactine out to the sidewalk. Come to think of it.

We had the first Urgent Care facility. at was in 1960.

I was five. I still love Bactine. Where else can you get an antiseptic anesthetic over the counter—and it even smells good. Again, moving on.

So I of course went to the street to see if all the falls I could remember was an anomaly. One of my friends may not remember all her falls, but she remembers the big ones for sure. She was riding a horse and the horse got hinkey, started to go down and before she knew it the danged thing rolled over, she leaped off and then the silly horse got up, saddle now slung on his side, and he ran like the dickens. I wish I could have seen that fall!

Most everyone remembers when they fall and hurt themselves. Especially if a bone is broken! en there are us that remember things like playing kick ball in the fih grade. e smell of that red rubber ball. e sound of the gravel as your shoe starts to slide across it, just before gravel and knee meet and the gravel tears your skin to shreds. Do you remember all those scabs we had growing up? How they felt. How if you picked at them too soon, they bled again. Oh. My. Goodness.

So it’s memories that make us tell stories. It’s the memory box of goodness and badness in life that I draw from to write. e best thing is that most of the time Is is You? will bring a memory back to each person that reads. at is the best memory for me. When I hear someone say they see themselves in the situations I happily get to write about.

Aer all, aer reading about all of my falling downs, and that little girl, in a fluffy white taffeta dress with little champagne glasses embroidered on the front in lovely pastel colors, what do you see when you look back at you? A First For Eureka e Eureka Pharmacy has a new addition! Andy Bath has put in a photo-copy machine. You can stop in and have your pictures copied, enlarged or get multiple sizes. Free Dump Days Every Saturday in May Eureka County is offering free dump days for all residents every Saturday in May during landfill operating hours. All items must be separated. Absolutely no household waste, dead animals, hazardous waste, pull trailers or 5th wheels or campers. Tires with rims, cement or dirt will be charge $150 per tire. UHF to Digital Television in Eureka County Although television began to be broadcast nationally in the 1920’s, it would be another nearly 40 years before a few good men of Eureka hauled the first transmitter to the top of the mountain up on Prospect Peak west of town to begin the process of bringing TV to the south end of the county.

In approximately 1968 television was broadcast via UHF frequency to town and later further out into the valley. And now free TV is available in Crescent Valley and surrounding areas too.

At the time television was first transmitted we received from transmitters in White Pine County. e three stations received were all from Salt Lake City. NBC, ABC, and CBS were “on the air” and literally in the air. Later sometime in the early 1970’s the PBS station was added. at was when TV ended each day with the test pattern with the Indian head as pictured, along with e Star-Spangled Banner.

Quiet a fanfare. e Eureka County Television District was established by the then County Commissioners in 1968. Our current TV Board members as listed on the county web site are, Randy Klatt, Eldon Brown, Tracy Moylan, Jim Breitrick and Mike Rebaleati. Mike’s father Norman along with Art Biale and Jerry Machacek were the first men to gather the information to create the television district. Norman was the go-to guy for all that needed to be fixed or updated on the hill. He made many trips up to tweak and align the signals put out by the equipment.

Today from three different locations a total of 51 stations are available by antenna on digital channels. e three transmitting stations are, Argenta with 22 stations, Prospect with 24 and Tank Hill which is only available in the town of Eureka has 15 stations. Now too, the television available in this manner has stations from Reno, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas along with several multi-media stations.

Is it a perfect system? No. It does have its problems. However, for where we live and the time that has been spent in developing the television district, and that it is free TV, we are above the curve in rural television districts. phone Call Scams: Scam Series Part III

Even with all the advances in technology, sometimes the oldest method is still the most effective. Phone call scams have been around for years, but they have evolved into something far more convincing than most people realize.

Unlike text messages or emails, a phone call puts you directly in conversation with another person. at allows scammers to adjust in real time, respond to your questions, and apply pressure in a way that feels legitimate. In many cases, they sound professional, prepared, and even helpful. at is exactly what makes these scams so effective.

THE “BanK or FraUD DEparTMEnT” Call One of the most common phone scams today starts with a call that appears to come from your bank or credit card company. e caller may already have some of your personal information and will oen speak calmly, explaining that there has been suspicious activity on your account. From there, they will ask you to confirm details or provide a verification code to “secure” your account. e problem is that this mirrors what legitimate fraud departments actually do, which makes it difficult to recognize in the moment. e key difference is that a real bank will never ask for sensitive information such as your password or full verification codes over the phone. If you find yourself in this situation, the safest move is always to hang up and call your bank directly

THE “GovErnMEnT aGEnCy” Call Another version involves someone claiming to represent a government agency, such as the IRS or Social Security. ese calls oen carry a more serious tone and may include warnings about unpaid taxes, suspended benefits, or even legal action. e goal is to create a sense of urgency that pushes you to act before you have time to think.

In reality, government agencies do not operate this way. ey do not demand immediate payment over the phone, nor do they threaten arrest during an initial contact. When you understand that, it becomes much easier to recognize the tactic for what it is. e best response in these situations is simply to hang up and verify the claim independently.

THE “FaMily EMErGEnCy” Call Perhaps the most unsettling version of this scam is the one that targets emotion instead of logic. You may receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member or close friend in trouble, asking for money or help right away. In some cases, scammers are even using technology, like AI, to mimic familiar voices, making the situation feel alarmingly real. at emotional reaction is exactly what they are counting on. e instinct to help can override caution, especially when it involves someone you care about.

One of the best ways to handle this is to pause, hang up,

and contact the person directly using a number you already have. In nearly every case, you will find that nothing is wrong.

Also, create a family password or safety question that is known only to you and your immediate family. Be sure to include grandparents, as they are frequently the targets of these scams. If you’re concerned and don’t feel comfortable just hanging up, ask for the password or the answer to the family question. Except nothing but the correct answer.

SKEpTiCiSM anD ConTrol In the end, phone scams succeed when they control the pace of the conversation and keep you reacting instead of thinking. e moment you slow things down, you take that control away. You are never obligated to stay on the line, provide information, or make a decision in the moment. Hanging up is always an option, and it is oen the smartest one.

When something feels off, trust that instinct. Take a step back, verify the situation on your own terms, and remember that no legitimate issue requires immediate action over a single phone call. Stay sharp out there, Eureka!

Just What is the Eureka Grant Summit all about?

By Trina Machacek It Is Not Just About Grants! It’s much, much more. is event is put on to inform and teach. It’s about: “Preparing Eureka County for Strategic Growth and Industry Diversification.” is coming June in Eureka an event hosted by i80 Gold Mines, the Governor’s Office of Federal Assistance and Eureka County will take place at the Opera House June 1-3, 2026.

What started last year as a Grant Lab, to learn how to apply for and where to find grants for non-profit businesses and entities, has morphed into something that has far reaching potential to many groups and individuals. is year the agenda has changed and the itinerary includes speakers from around the state to present ways to grow our community with developing housing programs and getting loans to purchase homes, loans to start or grow businesses. e kick off on Jun1 includes a mine tour at the i80 mine and a tour of downtown Eureka. Followed by a hosted dinner that is included for registrants of the Summit. e itinerary for Day 1 offers: Day 1: ToUrS anD nETWorKinG • I-80 Gold Corp. Presentation • Tours • Local mine tours • Historic downtown Eureka and tunnel tours • Evening Event – Hosted by I-80 Gold Corp.

Other avenues presented will cover workforce and community development.

Arthur Nava of Eureka has been a strong voice in getting this summit set up in Eureka. He represents one of the sponsors, the USABOT e Brotherhood of Tankers, a division of the US Armed forces. He will open the third day on June 3 with welcome back remarks and an overview of that day.

So no, the Grant Summit is so much more than talking about grants. It is for businesses, farmers and ranchers, teachers and educators, developers, realtors, and anyone that is interested in keeping up with and sharing ideas about the

future of Eureka County and other rural communities.

Mr. Gregson was a respected colleague whose contributions are deeply appreciated by those who worked alongside him.

Sheriff’s Corner

Accident on Highway 278 On April 10 there was a traffic crash SR 278 at mile marker MM 55. One lane of the highway was blocked as emergency crews cleared the debris of core samples that were being transported for processing. Reports are that a car coming towards the truck and trailer crossed and the car over the center line forcing the truck to move to the right where the so shoulder caught the wheel of the trailer and caused the accident. It was noted the car that was across the center line did not stop. ere were no injuries and the road was opened when all the rock cores were cleaned off the road. NHP handled the incident.

Ely Times: e State Highway Department is advertising a seven-mile contract in Churchill County between Frenchman’s and Westgate, which will close another gap in the Lincoln highway. is contract will be finished early in the Summer and will add another section of fast highway between Ely and the west end of the State. ere will remain but 12 miles of uncompleted highway between Ely and Reno, the milage in question being between Eureka and Austin, which is to be taken care of before the summer closes. Eight miles of this section will be under forestry construction and the State and County takes care of the other four.

By Fall the entire distance across this State will be finished, making the Lincoln highway the first highway completed across the State.

Parties recently driving from Ely to Reno under the present highway conditions have made the run in less than a day. Last week parties drove from Fallon to Ely under eight hours, and with the completion of the highway the trip will be cut materially.

APPLICATION FOR WATER NO. 94845 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that on the 25th day of November 2025 Sadler Ranch, LLC of Lagunitas, California made application to the State Engineer of Nevada for permission to change the point of diversion of 7.02 c.f.s., 5,100 a.f.a., of water heretofore appropriated under Permit 81720. Water will be diverted from an underground source at a point located within the NW1/4 SW1/4 of Section 24, T24N, R52E, MDB&M, being further described as 39.94396° N, 116.06655° W (approx. 30 miles N of Eureka, NV). Water will be used for irrigation purposes from January 1st to December 31st of each year. The existing point of diversion was located within the NW1/4 SE1/4 of Section 23, T24N, R52E, MDB&M, or at a point from which the NW corner of Section 13, T24N, R52E, MDB&M bears N 09 degrees 04 minutes 11 seconds E, a distance of 8,987.78 feet. Water was used for irrigation purposes from January 1st to December 31st of each year.

Justice Court News Thursday, April 9, 2026, the Eureka County Justice Court, Justice of the Peace Dorothy Rowley presiding, conducted a change of plea and sentencing hearing in the matter of the State of Nevada v. George Cecil D. Wright, Case Number 25 CR 00046 7D. Present at 5041 Tenabo Avenue in Crescent Valley was the Defendant with his appointed counsel Jane Eberhardy, Esq., Eureka County Public Defender. Present on behalf of the State of Nevada was Eureka County Deputy District Attorney Holli Else, Esq. The Court canvassed Defendant and accepted his plea of guilty to count II: public nuisance, a misdemeanor in violation of NRS 202.470; and count V: provoking assault, a misdemeanor in violation of NRS 200.490. The Court then proceeded to sentencing.

After hearing from the parties and allowing the victim of crime to address the Court, the Court sentenced Mr. Wright to pay $390 total in fines and fees for both count II and count V. The Court then suspended the fines and fees for 6 months on the condition that the Defendant not be convicted of violations of the same statutes.
