Message from the Assistant Head for Advancement Our Collective Support and Its Impact In a world marked by challenges and uncertainties, our shared commitment to philanthropy continues to light the way forward. As we present this annual report, we celebrate not just the numbers, but the incredible collective impact we have made together. It is a testament to the power of generosity, empathy, and unity in shaping an everchanging world and brightening the future for us all. This year, our philanthropic community grew stronger. We welcomed 117 new supporters and celebrated the unwavering dedication of our long-standing donors. Our community is diverse, representing a collage of generations, backgrounds, perspectives, experiences, and passions. It is this diversity that we continue to marvel at, and that enriches our overall impact. While numbers alone do not capture the true essence of our work, they do reveal the magnitude of our impact: Total Funds Raised

Your support fuels each story of change, turning dreams into reality, and making their educational journeys continue to be possible. This shared partnership is a testament to our commitment to building a more just and compassionate society. We extend our deepest gratitude to every donor, supporter, and partner who has joined us on this philanthropic journey. Your trust, passion, and commitment are the driving forces behind our collective impact. Let’s continue to look ahead with optimism and determination. Annual Habitat for Humanity service trip

Why Give? “Walker’s has given so much to me: an education, great friends, a place where I feel at home. Alumnae before me gave to Walker’s and made it possible for me to access an extraordinary education and a lifetime network of remarkable women. Scholarship funds allowed me to attend, and I give each year so others can also benefit from a Walker’s education. Walker’s is so relevant today; there has never been a greater need for girls schools. Walker’s Capabilities Approach Program is providing this generation of students with skills so important today.” — Katharine Swibold ’78 Alumnae Board Secretary

Investment Seminar 2022-2023 As part of Walker’s groundbreaking Capabilities Approach Program, there is a combination of defined fluencies, discoveries, and agencies that complement our rigorous academic curriculum. This program sets Walker’s apart from our peer schools and defines us as a leader in education. Funded by a generous The Class of 2023 grandparent with $50,000 earned 14% on their seed money, an Investment investment portfolio Seminar for the Class of 2023 debuted this year. Each senior chose a stock or mutual fund to invest $1,000 on behalf of the School. Students tracked weekly returns and learned firsthand about investing strategies. This real-world experience was enhanced with classroom workshops and visiting speakers, giving students a firsthand look at the benefits of long-term wealth-building strategies and a deeper understanding of personal finance and investment. Overwhelmingly positive feedback was received from both students and parents, who expressed their desire for more on this topic. This fall, we will be launching the seminar in a three-year academic program. Our sophomore and junior classes will also participate in the investment seminar with a focus on the fundamentals of investing. Each student will invest $1,000 in the stock market and learn about real-time investment strategies over the three years. The additional time allows for a more realistic realworld experience and, potentially, a bigger return on their investment. The Board of Trustees also expressed their belief in the seminar by voting to allow a small portion of the School’s endowment to be part of the funding for the program, once again ensuring Walker’s place at the forefront of education for girls.

Winter Dance Concert

An Extraordinary $1 Million Challenge Achieved! In 2022-2023 the Annual Fund for Walker’s was to be part of something extraordinary. Every year, we come together to make a difference, to inspire change, and to support the needs of Walker’s. 75% of Annual Fund monies, raised before December 31, unlocked the additional $1 million gift by a generous alumna. This challenge galvanized our community into giving, knowing the challenge isn’t just about the dollars and cents, but rather the impact we create when we unite for a common purpose and what we can collectively achieve together. Gifts, no matter the size, share the power to inspire others, and to make a lasting impact in our community. Together we made — and can make — such a difference!

The Ethel Walker Heritage Society The Ethel Walker Heritage Society celebrates and honors those women and men who have chosen to make gifts to The Ethel Walker School through a bequest or other legacy giving, including life insurance and

remainder trusts. Throughout Walker’s long history, planned gifts have been the largest source of investment

income for the School. Ethel Walker Smith’s personal planned giving reflects this philosophy and generosity of spirit. She has been an extraordinary benefactor to the School, having shaped the School with her vision from

its founding moments and now with her planned giving into perpetuity. Her demonstration of planning for the future helped to realize her philanthropic ambitions. It is a fitting tribute that our planned giving society bears

her name. We invite alumnae, parents, and friends to share in Ethel Walker Smith’s ambitions and commitment to an extraordinary education for girls and consider joining her and many others by creating a planned gift. A Devoted Teacher Remembers Walker’s in her Estate In 2023, Walker’s received a bequest from a former faculty member, Judith Phelps. Her story is shared here. Judith Nettie Phelps was born June 8, 1934 to a family of modest means, and raised in Massachusetts. She graduated from Middlebury College in 1956 and then completed her Master of Arts degree in Literature at Columbia University. Taking the train from New York City, Judith came to Simsbury and The Ethel Walker School to be interviewed by Head of School Natalie Galbraith (1944-1957). After that interview, Judith was hired and taught English at Walker’s for three years. Judith referred to this time at Walker’s as the honeymoon of her teaching career. In the late 1950s it was customary for faculty to live on campus in what was known as the “Faculty House.” Judith lived there, among the other faculty women — all more than twice her age. One of the women, Head of the English Department, Florence Hunt, became both a friend and a mentor. Judith reflected on Florence’s influence on her as a teacher and person and always remembered her impact — even decades later. Judith stated emphatically that what she remembered most about Walker’s was the students. Spending time in Beaver Brook to help girls, actively participating in many extracurricular activities and trips — Judith in her early twenties felt close in age and thus enjoyed learning and playing with the girls during free time. She also traveled with Margot Campbell Bogert ’60, Trustee Emerita, and her family to Europe during this time. Walker’s provided her with both academic and personal life experiences that proved irreplaceable in her future and her outlook on life. After Judith’s third year at Walker’s, she realized that if she stayed for a fourth year, she would never leave and move on in her life, especially socially. The requirement of living in the “Faculty House” did not leave much room or time for socializing outside of School. As she was only in her early twenties, this decision led her back to New York City, her first year in business, followed by a return to teaching English at The Chapin School, where she taught for over 30 years before retiring. But it all began at Walker’s. Judith credited Walker’s with a foundation in teaching that served her beautifully throughout her career and with the realization that “one learns for life there.” Finding herself in retirement and with the knowledge that education is the greatest gift in life, she decided to bequest a portion of her estate to Walker’s in hopes that some talented students may be helped by the school that led her to her life’s path and career. Walker’s honors the life of Judith N. Phelps. Her gift will continue to support the education of future generations of Walker’s students in perpetuity. In memory of Judith N. Phelps, who passed away on May 19, 2020.

Planning Your Gift to Walker’s

70-1/2 Years or Older with an IRA? As with all good things, our charitable giving options improve with age. The IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers aged 70-1/2 or older to make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year from an Individual Retirement

Account directly to Walker’s. These qualified charitable distributions can fulfill an individual’s required minimum

distribution. Gifts postmarked by December 31 will qualify as a qualified charitable distribution for that year. Please contact your IRA plan administrator for instructions on initiating a gift to Walker’s. (Walker’s Tax ID: 06-0689699)

Whatever method is best for you, we thank you for making Walker’s a philanthropic priority. Please let us help facilitate your giving.
