Our new athletic fields are complete, and our vision for the future continues to take shape as we draw closer to our Centennial Campaign goal. Our devoted alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends of the School blessed us with their generous support in the 2011-2012 fiscal year, giving of their time and dollars in support of the founding principles of our institution and for that, we thank you. Going Green As with our many other exciting ventures this past year, Walker’s is embracing yet another: next year we will transition from a paper to an online Annual Report. We are very excited about this change and hope you will be as well. Like many of our peer schools, Walker’s already embraces green initiatives on campus. This step is an important one — not only will we be saving trees and money, but the web version will provide our alumnae, parents and friends with a more comprehensive way to learn about the health of The Ethel Walker School.

Message from the Head of School

Ethel Walker alumna Nancy

• Walker’s students and teachers began the 2012-2013 academic year with a 1:1 iPad program • Walker’s launched an integrated traditional, online and experiential classroom for the 2012-2013 academic year • Walker’s joined the Online School for Girls, expanding courses available to students • Opening day enrollment increased nearly 10% with 260 students from 15 different countries and 23 states

Van Voorhees Barrett ’24 competed in the 1924 Olympics, winning first place for the high jump. As we reflect on 2011-12, and we acknowledge and thank those whose support made it an extraordinary Centennial year, it seems fitting that the Olympics took place this summer. Thanks to so many of you, The Ethel Walker School has certainly enjoyed its own “Olympic” moments, including some notable high jumps! • Over 1,200 people gathered for our Centennial Weekend last fall • The School’s S&P rating moved from stable to positive • Walker’s reports a balanced budget for the second consecutive year • $21 million has been raised towards the $50 million Centennial Campaign goal • Phase One of the Centennial Campaign has been completed; new turf fields and athletic pavilion are in use • Barn renovation and expansion completed • Plans are underway for construction of a new dormitory • The Centennial Center Task Force continues to refine the vision for the Centennial Center

A Walker’s education is more important today than ever before. As we continue to instill the values of integrity, confidence, courage, and conviction in our young women, it is your belief and investment in, and dedication to the School, that have helped us enjoy the Centennial success our students and faculty deserve. It continues to be a great privilege to live and work on this beautiful campus with talented, kind, passionate students and teachers. I am absolutely positive that Miss Walker’s legacy empowers young women to succeed with the “high jumps” of their lives and, in so doing, the world is made stronger. Thank you for investing in this legacy and for ensuring that the continuation of our Centennial chapter meets with Olympic success! Sincerely,

Elizabeth C. Speers Head of School

Our future is bright. Miss Walker would be proud of her legacy and I thank you, on behalf of the Board of Trustees and the School, for your generosity. Here’s to the School we love so well!

milestone one hundredth commencement in June, we are now focused on the next one hundred years of The Ethel Walker School. Today, the vision of our founder, Miss Ethel Walker, is more relevant than ever thanks to our dedicated faculty, staff and beloved alumnae, parents and friends who, each year, help support the School that has given us so much. We are deeply appreciative of you, and all you do for Walker’s. Yet again we have achieved a balanced budget, met our annual fund goal, and are poised for more successes in the coming year. Annual Giving Report | 2011–2012

Dear Walker’s Alumnae,

around the country and hear of all of your successes. The Centennial Campaign is ramping up and gaining momentum. As people learn about the scope of our ambition and our ability to rise to the challenges involved, they have begun to share the vision we put forth. This shared sense of pride and purpose has helped us secure over $21 million of the $50 million goal. The Centennial Campaign will drive our progress into the next 100 years, and it is taking shape as I write. Phase One involved upgrading our athletic fields. We now have athletic fields that will attract a new generation of student athletes. In closing, I will say that it’s always a pleasure to correspond with you, even more so when there is good news to report. I ask that you renew your allegiance to Walker’s, and continue to power our pursuit of the mission to which we have each contributed.

Parents and Friends: In the evolution of a learning institution there are critical junctures — points in time when events align to create a clear path forward. We at Walker’s are at such a place right now, and the news I share with you is among the best I have ever had the pleasure to report. The results of our Annual Fund campaign are in, and we have set a record for money raised: more than $1.6 million. I cannot emphasize enough how important this is to the ongoing operation of our campus. The Annual Fund delivers a foundation of fiscal strength, and without it we cannot reach for brighter, more distant stars. Which brings me to the launch of the Centennial Campaign. It began with a fabulous celebration last October where over 1,200 of you — our alumnae, parents and friends — attended Walker’s Centennial weekend. Sigourney Weaver ’67 spoke at our Saturday Chapel, and it was her words that reminded us of how successful our alumnae can be with a Walker’s education behind them. I continue to feel privileged to meet many of you

Warm regards,

Pamela Churchill Director of Development pamela_churchill@ethelwalker.org

Centennial Campaign – Phase I

Centennial Athletic Fields and Pavilion It has been 100 years in the making, and The Centennial Campaign for The Ethel Walker School is now under way. The scope of the campaign is significant. It involves raising funds for a Centennial Center, the signature structure of the campaign itself. The Centennial Center will be more than a stateof-the-art building. It will be a place where academics, athletics, and the social dimension of life at Walker’s converge — a new model for the education of young women. It involves building the financial future of Walker’s. The campaign will increase our endowment to make it competitive with other private schools and give Walker’s greater financial stability. The campaign also involves a consistent effort for The Walker’s Fund for Annual Giving. Unrestricted funds given each year to the school through the annual fund are central to our operations. Each year of the campaign, we will ask alumnae and friends to continue to support the annual fund. But first, The Centennial Campaign for The Ethel Walker School addressed an immediate need: The development of our athletic fields. Phase One of the Centennial Campaign involved the construction of The Centennial Athletic Fields and Pavilion.

The Endowed Funds of The Ethel Walker School The Ethel Walker School is proud to have 59 endowed funds that support the mission of the School. Without these funds, Walker’s would not be able to provide the many enriching opportunities available for the students and faculty. We are grateful to all those who established and continue to support these funds.

A Better Chance Scholarship Fund This Fund was established in 1988 to benefit minority students. Claudia Aguero ’84 Scholarship Fund Established in 1985 in memory of Claudia Aguero ’84, this scholarship is to be awarded annually to a deserving student. The George I. Alden Scholarship Endowment Established in 1996 after alumnae, parents and friends helped meet a 3:1 Alden Trust Challenge. The partnership formed between The Alden Trust and supporters of the challenge have helped The Ethel Walker School uphold its tradition of maintaining a diverse student body and ensuring that private education not be limited to only those students with the personal resources to fund their educations. The Constance L. Bell Library Endowment Fund

The A. Gordon Clarke, Jr. Endowed Campus Revitalization Fund

This Fund was established by the Bell family primarily to benefit the Constance Lavino Bell Library at The Ethel Walker School. The income from the Fund is to be used exclusively for the support of the Constance Lavino Bell Library.

In 1994, to celebrate and recognize fifteen years of talent, dedication, impeccable service, efficiency, and constancy as Walker’s Business Manager, A. Gordon Clarke, Jr.’s many friends established this Fund. Income from the Fund is used in part to offset the annual budget for repairs, renewals and special maintenance of the campus and its buildings.

The Gertrude J. Berman Flower Fund This Fund was established in 1978 by Diane Berman Hoffman and Barbara Berman Levy in memory of their mother Gertrude, grandmother of Carol Hoffman Jason ’75, Barbara Hoffman Siegenfeld ’76, Alyssa Levy ’63, and Mary Jane Levy Dickson ’68, to purchase flowers for Reunion Weekend.

The Class of 1946 Endowed Educational Enrichment Fund Established by the Class of 1946 on the occasion of its 50th reunion. Recognized by the Class of 1946 as a valuable complement to Walker’s curriculum, each year income from the Fund is used to provide a variety of enrichment programs. For example, income from the endowment may be used to provide the Dean of Students with sufficient funds to invite a guest speaker or entertainer to campus for a special event.

The Margaret Huling Bonz Women of Distinction Speakers Series Endowment Fund This Fund was established in honor of Margaret Huling Bonz, Head of The Ethel Walker School from 1988 through 1999, for her years of dedication and commitment to the students, faculty and members of The Ethel Walker School community. The Fund will provide the resources for the School to invite annually a woman of distinction to participate in an activity with students and faculty and to give a formal presentation to the School community and invited guests.

The Class of 1952 Endowed Scholarship Fund The Class of 1952 celebrated its 35th Reunion by establishing an endowed scholarship Fund in memory of deceased classmates who include Elizabeth Anson, Ann McDonough Capshaw, Marilyn Fuller Casey, June Haley Curtis, Elizabeth Brandes du Pont, Anne Fairburn, Mary Dickinson Herb, Louisa Livingston Kennedy, Elinor Schenck Kurth, Judy Follansbee Lynch, Diana Tailer Pinkham, Maria Lobo Ryan, Lois Spreckels, Alison Bixby Stone and Daphne Towne Witsell. In doing so, it was their hope that recipients would not only benefit from an outstanding academic experience at Walker’s, but at the same time form bonds that lead to life-long friendships.

The Diane Brayton Bushby ’47 Memorial Fund This Fund was established in 1973 by friends and family for the purpose of purchasing a Steinway concert grand piano. The income from this Fund is to be used for the upkeep of the piano.

The Etherington Family Endowed Fund Established by Tucker Etherington Anderson ’66 and the Etherington family. The Fund will provide for the maintenance of the Julius Mihaly Cross Country Course. The course was built in 1998 through the generosity of the Etherington family in memory of former Riding Master Julius Mihaly and as a tribute to Sandford G. Etherington, a former business manager at The Ethel Walker School. The Lindsay P. Flynn ’05 Endowed Fund for Faculty Development Established in their daughter’s name by Patrick Flynn and Barbara Nash, this Fund is designed to benefit faculty by providing funding for a broad range of professional development activities including travel, coursework, seminars and independent study projects. The Edward E. Ford Faculty Development Fund Established in 1980 to provide an in-service professional development program for faculty.

The Class of 1962 Lecture Fund This Fund was established in 1962 by the Class of 1962 as their Senior Gift to the School “in the hope that our gift will benefit the academic field and will give not only knowledge but also pleasure to many generations of students.”

The Elizabeth Gilbert Fortune ’36 Endowed Scholarship for Legacies Established in 1998 by Elizabeth Gilbert Fortune ’36 †, this scholarship was created to encourage Walker’s alumnae to keep the Walker’s tradition alive in their families. Scholarship assistance from The Elizabeth Gilbert Fortune ’36 Scholarship Fund is available to any qualified legacy applicant or student. A merit scholarship is awarded annually.

The Kate Elms Corroon ’65 Endowed Memorial Library Fund Originally established in 1965 by Kate’s family, classmates and friends. In 1987, on the occasion of her 50th Reunion, Nancy Elms Corroon ’37 †, Kate’s mother, provided the resources for establishing the Fund as a separately endowed Fund. Yearly contributions are made to the Fund’s principal. Income from the endowment continues to make a significant impact on the School’s ability to enhance the Bell Library’s collection and technology in support of Walker’s curriculum.

The Galbraith Mitchell Endowment Fund Established according to Natalie Galbraith Mitchell’s † wishes through her estate, this Fund is used to provide an opportunity for foreign language teachers to study abroad for a year in a country whose native language is that taught by the teacher. This year of study is known as the “Galbraith Mitchell Sabbatical Year.” Additional income from this Fund is used for Galbraith Building improvements, additions, maintenance, and restoration; for maintenance and restoration of the Mitchell Organ; and for any other purpose the Board of Trustees deems advisable.

The Culpepper Endowment for Faculty Support Fund Established in 1980 by the Charles E. Culpepper Foundation to support faculty study and professional growth. The Davies Visiting Artist Endowment Fund Established in 1999 by Mr. and Mrs. John B. Davies in honor of their daughters, Sarah Davies Murad ’00 and Leslie Davies Huguenin ’96. The income from this Fund is to be used to bring visiting artists to campus.

Established in 1990 by Harriet Henderson ’18 † to benefit the Riding Program which, since its founding in 1911, has played an important role at the School. Walker’s riding program not only accommodates the young girl who wishes to ride, but teaches her responsibility and commitment through the care of animals, helps develop a compassion for life, and a discipline that further builds character.

I hope this gift will maintain the Chapel so that it can continue to be a place of beauty, inspiration, comfort, and continuity in the years ahead for The Ethel Walker School family.”

Mars and her daughter Alexandra Badger Airth ’83 established The Mars Scholarship Fund to benefit students at The Ethel Walker School. The Thompson-Hunziker Endowed Field Trip Fund

The Elaine Johnson Wold ’46 Endowed Scholarship Fund

The late Gladys Thompson Hunziker ’48 † and Robin Hunziker Smith ’73 marked the occasions of their 50th and 25th reunions by establishing the Thompson-Hunziker Field Trip Fund. Established by a grant from The H.E. Thompson Foundation, the Fund provides the resources for students to enjoy more off-campus events which, in the words of the donors, “enhances and solidifies the exceptional classroom experience which The Ethel Walker School offers.”

Originally established in 1987, significant additions have been made to The Elaine Johnson Wold ’46 Scholarship Fund during the One Vision, Many Voices Campaign. Income from the Fund continues to support The School’s ability to grant scholarships to needy, but eminently qualified young women who both benefit from and add profoundly to the Walker’s experience. 75th Anniversary Library Endowment Fund

The Ethel Walker School Equestrian Clinic Fund

The Ethel Walker Heritage Society The Ethel Walker School has been the proud recipient of bequests, both large and small, from many generous alumnae and friends over the years. These donors felt that they needed the assets during their lifetimes, but decided to link themselves forever with the ongoing life of the school by making a gift through their estate plans. The following are just some of the ways alumnae and friends have remembered The Ethel Walker School in their wills or estate plans. • • • • • • •

Percentage of the estate, or a specific dollar amount A particular stock, bond or mutual fund portfolio A piece of real estate Making Walker’s the beneficiary of an IRA or pension Naming Walker’s as the remainderman of a charitable trust After providing for family and friends, designating Walker’s as the residuary beneficiary Making Walker’s a contingent beneficiary in the event certain beneficiaries predecease the donor

If you would like to receive additional information regarding: • Including The Ethel Walker School in your Estate Plan • Bequest Intention Acknowledgment Form • Outside Charitable Trust Confirmation Form • Sample bequest language

What is the Heritage Society? The Heritage Society membership is a way for The Ethel Walker School to honor individuals who have provided for the school through a current planned gift, or named Walker’s as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Members may request anonymity.

Please contact: Jane Rae Bradford Director of Gift Planning The Ethel Walker School 230 Bushy Hill Road Simsbury, CT 06070 Phone: 860-408-4260 Email: jbradford@ethelwalker.org

What is a Bequest Intention versus a Matured Bequest? When a donor has included Walker’s in a will or estate plan during her lifetime this is considered a “bequest intention”. When the donor passes away and The Ethel Walker School receives the bequest from the donor’s estate it is a “matured bequest”.

How does a donor document their bequest intention? In order to be a member of The Ethel Walker Heritage Society we ask that the donor contact Walker’s to advise us of their intention. We then encourage the donor to complete our confidential Bequest Intention Acknowledgement Form. (If the donor feels comfortable putting a conservative dollar figure on the form it may be “counted” in our campaign.)
