Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders

Students arrive at Episcopal with an excitement to learn and an anticipation of the path that lies before them. When they depart, we aim to have instilled in them the knowledge, character, and skills they will need to achieve their definition of success.

Success looks different for each individual. Whether they go on to drive change through civic service, run an innovative company, inspire others through art, build a non-profit, or compete on a professional athletic team, our graduates will need exceptional leadership skills.

There is an age-old debate about whether leaders are born or made. I live in the “made” camp, but I do not believe you can teach leadership only in a traditional way.

I believe you can study leadership and learn a lot from good (and bad) leaders, but I think effective leadership development requires two intentional and carefullycrafted steps. We must identify and cultivate the core skills tomorrow’s leaders will need, and then we have to provide ample opportunities for students to practice these skills.

Effective leadership looks a lot different today than it did in the past. When I think back to some of my early exposures to leadership, a top-down, authoritarian style dominates most of my memories. Today, we see more of a collaborative, distributed style. How will tomorrow’s top leaders be described? In our feature story, we explore this question and hear thoughts from a few members of the Episcopal community.

I had the pleasure of co-teaching a May Term course focused on leadership this past spring. We spent two weeks diving deeply into different leadership styles and techniques and meeting with alumni and parents who serve in impressive and inspiring leadership roles.

Thanks to our strong Episcopal network, we were able to tap into the minds of successful entrepreneurs and leaders from many industries. We met executives from SAP, Comcast, Hyatt, Goldman Sachs, and UPenn, to name a few. It was impactful to hear today’s leaders talk about the skills they feel tomorrow’s leaders will need.

One of the most common themes centered on being comfortable with vulnerability and open to continual growth, learning, and improvement. This can be a really tough skill to master. We are conditioned from a young age to hide our weaknesses and to avoid failure. Today, we must help our students overcome the fear of failure or judgment and help them recognize the learning and growth that can result from imperfect outcomes or challenging experiences.

While we work to cultivate critical skills like this at Episcopal, we also try to model them. In recent years, we have encouraged our faculty to embrace their own individual growth opportunities and invest time to further improve their teaching practices. We are creating a culture where it is acceptable to talk about what we are struggling with and the unique challenges that educators face each day.

This has led to new best-practice sharing, more customized professional development, and stronger teaching and learning experiences, for both our faculty and students.

The second step in our leadership development approach is practice. We try to offer every student multiple ways to practice their leadership skills. We, of course, have some formal leadership opportunities, like Student Council, the Vestry, and Chapel Council, club presidents, and team captains. Where I believe EA truly shines is more in the informal opportunities that we present to students.

In this issue, you will meet some of the students who are passionate about agriculture and sustainability and help to lead the farming efforts in our Sid Buck Community Garden. You will see glimpses of tomorrow’s great engineers and scientists in our Lower School after-school robotics program and in the Middle School students who excitedly attended a Microsoft-hosted STEM conference. You will read about how our 5th graders have stepped up to help introduce prospective families to our school and to ease the anxiety of little ones, who are often overwhelmed by the experience. You will meet some impressive young women who will one day be leaders in education and were inspired by their volunteer experience with Horizons at EA. These are just a few examples of how EA’s many leadership opportunities transform the educational experience. We are constantly thinking about how we can better develop the skills necessary for tomorrow’s leaders, and we welcome your thoughts. Episcopal has an incredible legacy of preparing leaders. We would love to feature stories about how Episcopal helped you cultivate the skills that have been critical to your success as a leader. We would also love to hear your opinions on the skills we explore in this issue and other important skills for future leaders. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me to share your thoughts and Episcopal memories.

Lower School Fifth grade students are taking the lead to help welcome visiting students. “We had young visitors who were sometimes teary or anxious when they arrived,” explained Amy Walling, associate director of admission. “So, Leah Kimmet, our assistant head of Lower School, had the great idea of getting 5th graders involved as greeters.”

Fifth graders meet their visitor in the lobby and lead them to the classroom they will be visiting that day. “It’s easier for the prospective student to separate from their parent when they are coaxed away by someone younger, closer to eye level, who engages them in fun conversation,” observed Walling. “It is a fun and friendly introduction, as well as a leadership touchpoint for our older students.”

“We really noticed a difference in the experience for our young visitors,” said Kimmet. “The 5th grade ambassadors really help make the overall visit go much smoother, and visiting families love meeting our older students and hearing about their EA experience.”

“It was a lot of fun,” shared Lilly Ebmeyer ’26, who was in the inaugural group of 5th grade ambassadors. “My favorite part was having someone to pass on all the things you know about the school.”

“The 5th grade students are seen as the leaders of the Lower School, so they are encouraged to step up into leadership roles,” explained Anna Slack, associate director of admission.

“I really see 5th graders gaining valuable experience as leaders,” said Lower School Teacher Lisa Herbster. “They love being ambassadors and feeling like Lower School experts. Most volunteer to do it multiple times throughout the year.”

“I think that the information that I pass on to the students and the parents is really helpful, because I have been here for basically my whole life, and I know some stuff,” said Lilly with a smile.

Lower School students stay after school twice a week for Robotics After School. Launched last spring, the pilot program was so popular, it is now available to all 1st – 5th graders.

Fourth graders started their school year with the annual overnight adventure to Cape Henlopen.

A red carpet, cheerful music, and a bubble machine made for a festive atmosphere as members of the varsity football team welcomed young students on their first day of school.

Middle School Female students from the Middle School gained an inside look at STEM careers at Microsoft’s DigiGirlz Day, held at the company’s state-of-the-art campus in Malvern in April.

DigiGirlz Day events are held at Microsoft campuses worldwide and promote understanding of technology-based careers to middle and high school girls. Females currently hold less than one-fifth of technology positions nationwide.

“The DigiGirlz event was a great opportunity for our Middle School girls to explore digital tools used in the technology industry, connect with peers and mentors, and explore future career paths,” said Computer Science and Engineering Department Chair Matt Memmo, Hon. Throughout the day, computer science students met with Microsoft employees, who shared their perspectives on working in tech fields. Participants then connected with STEM professionals during a mentors’ lunch.

“The DigiGirlz event was so fun, informative, and interesting,” shared Ishani Khanna ’26. “I learned so much from the instructors, mentors, and students.”

DigiGirlz Day also featured thought-provoking workshops in emerging technologies and tools.

“I got to learn more about STEM in general, as well as explore coding, 3D printing, and robotics,” said Clarissa Leung ’26. “I am so glad I got to be part of this experience.”

“I had a lot of fun at the DigiGirlz event,” echoed Elle du Pont ’26. “I really enjoyed it, and I would definitely do it again!”

The new Mind, Body, and Spirit class features guest “teachers” who work in a variety of non-teaching roles throughout campus. Topics include teambuilding, nutrition, managing a budget, sustainability, and how to meet new people.

Upper School With dozens of electives and more than 70 club offerings in Upper School, students have countless opportunities to explore their interests.

For seniors Johnny McCormick and Christian Anthopoulos, the Sid Buck Community Garden serves as a classroom of sorts, providing an opportunity to hone their leadership skills and passion for farming.

“I love working outside and helping the community, and I love the whole concept of farming,” shared Johnny. As one of EA’s head student farmers, Johnny helps with planting, harvesting, and building structures. He started working in the garden in 8th grade. “Being a leader at EA Farms is helping me grow my leadership skills, so I can guide others to success,” explained Johnny. “I have developed new knowledge in harvesting, planting, and basic farming, along with hydroponics. Someday, I hope to study power plant technology and horticulture after graduating from EA.” He has also owned his own landscaping company since he was 12 years old.

“The farm is important because it serves as a way for kids to learn about food, soil, and health, while it teaches them dedication, hard work, and allows them to serve the greater community,” said John Dilworth, Upper School English teacher and farm club advisor. “I am committed to the farm because learning, teaching, and growing are some of my passions. Being able to pass this on to students is a privilege.”

Christian also discovered his love for farming during his time in Middle School. “I work both down at the garden and also inside the greenhouse using the hydroponic system,” explained Christian. “I love being able to be outdoors and get my hands dirty during the school day.” Christian has spent his last two summers working at the Charlestown Farm and Urban Roots Philly. He plans to study farming and environmental science next year in college.

“Having a leadership position on the farm has taught me how to organize and lead others,” said Christian. “Having to schedule meetings and direct the younger kids at the farm has taught me skills that I will use in college and my later life.” He says one of the biggest challenges has been the weeds. “It’s a lot more work than most would think.”

Under the leadership of Christian, Johnny, and Mr. Dilworth, the EA Farm Club has harvested and donated 500 pounds of produce to the West Chester Food Cupboard this season.

The Vestry organized speakers around this year’s Chapel theme, “Hope does not disappoint,” a passage from Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Senior Warden Reid Powers spoke about what “Esse Quam Videri” means to him.

If anyone knows middle schoolers, it’s senior teacher Mark Luff. Since arriving at EA in 1978, Mark Luff has educated and inspired generations of students, including his current 7th and 8th grade English classes; Middle School basketball, soccer, and track teams; and 8th grade advisory. We sat down with our senior teacher to learn more about leadership opportunities in Middle School.

In what ways have you seen Middle School leadership activities evolve over your years at EA?

Faculty & Staff News Before her retirement in June, Form Dean Cheryl McLauchlan, Hon. joined 18 other teachers from area schools in being named the Best Educators in Delaware County by The Daily Times.

Kindergarten teacher Buffy Brown, Hon. was selected to the prestigious list of Main Line Today Top Teachers in August.

The Chapel Council and Student Government programs have become much more robust, vibrant, and active, and the process by which students are elected into these groups is more stringent. There are also far more clubs and activities that offer leadership positions.

What do students gain from taking on leadership roles in clubs, on teams, or in the classroom?

They’re learning the attributes and practicing skills that will make them an effective leader. They learn the power of empathy, patience, and assertiveness. They ask for and accept feedback, and they listen instead of judge.

In what other ways can Middle School students act as leaders among their peers?

Joining a club or doing a project is one way to become a leader; there are many other opportunities in Middle School to develop effective leadership skills. Teachers need to be deliberate and intentional in telling students that leadership can be in the moment. It can be standing up against injustice, bullying, or inappropriate behavior. It can be making the most out of opportunities to serve our community. It can be helping someone in need and acting as a role model for your peers.

Why are the Middle School years a perfect time to practice leadership?

Middle School students are interested in becoming larger stakeholders in their academic and social life at school.

They are ready to make more of their own decisions. The true challenge is that, developmentally, Middle School students focus much of their time and effort trying to fit in instead of stand out. Leadership creates opportunities for personal growth and teaches these students courage, responsibility, and determination. Teachers also encourage leadership development by challenging our students to ask questions, act as role models, be different, and put others before themselves. Leadership requires them to stand out, and Middle School students routinely rise to this challenge.

Brian Shanahan ’04 returned to EA as the varsity boys’ basketball coach after spending the last seven years at The Phelps School, where he was the assistant dean of students, athletic director, and basketball coach.

This September, EA transitioned to offering academic chair positions that span grades 6-12. Each department chair leads Middle and Upper School decision-making related to curriculum, ensures excellence in professional practices, and fosters a culture of growth. The following have been named grades 6-12 department chairs: Anne Barr, Hon. (English), Kelly Edwards (Math), Grace Limaye ’90 (Science), and Steve Schuh (History).

Gina Buggy, Hon., received The Michael F. Mayock Distinguished Teacher-Coach Award during the Spring Athletics Assembly in June. This award is given annually to an Inter-Ac teacher-coach in recognition of the positive impact the recipient has had on student-athletes.

Teaching Today

Challenge by Choice Two years ago, Upper School Mathematics Economics Teacher Adam Lavallee introduced a new assessment method to his AP Economics class. He calls this method “Challenge by Choice,” and it allows the students to break free from traditional, multiple-choice testing and apply what they are learning in class to current events, coursework in other classes, or other areas of individual interest. “If you think about how we all learn,” Lavallee said, “we learn best when we can connect a concept to a topic that we know or care about. I want my students to develop an economic lens with which to see the world and to build a foundation of economic understanding that they can apply to their lives.”

With Challenge by Choice, 40% of the student’s grade each semester is based on assignments they choose, design, and complete, based on their own interests. The other 60% of their grade is determined by test results and completed homework. Over the course of each semester, they must earn 200 points however they choose, and points are awarded relative to the time, effort, and insight that went into creating the assignment.

For example, a student could choose to do 20 small assignments worth 10 points each (such as reading an article and assessing the economic forces at play and applying economic theories), or four larger assignments worth 50 points each. “This work gives students the flexibility to choose a focus and application of course concepts,” Lavallee said. “They can choose the format of the work they do, whether that be reading a newspaper article, writing a paper, conducting a debate in front of the class, and more.”

It is those larger projects and ideas, Lavallee said, that demonstrates to him that the students are doing multiple times the work outside the classroom than what he sees in the final assignment. “Figuring out what they’re going to do is just as valuable as the work they end up turning in,” he explained. “They’re going through the day looking for ways these theories can be applied and making these connections outside of school.”

One student was at a baseball game, eating hot dogs, when he had an “aha” moment. He realized that he was willing to pay a premium for the first hot dog, but once he ate it, he was willing to pay less and less for each additional hot dog. “That’s the concept of Diminishing Marginal Utility,” Lavallee said. “He wasn’t in school or doing homework, but he was thinking about economics and seeing an example of it in the real world. The student submitted that analysis along with graphs to explain the theory at play.”

Each student can apply their knowledge differently, depending on their aptitudes and passions. For example, one student produced calculus proofs for the economics formulas that they were learning in class. Another student took a paper he had written about the Great Depression from U.S. history class and annotated each paragraph to explain the economic forces at play and the potential economic impact of policy decisions during that time.

The student also noted whether the theory bore out in practice. Other students conducted a scripted debate in front of their classmates on whether Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies should be considered fiat money (not backed by something of physical value, like gold) or commodity money.

Jack Rebillard ’20 combined multiple concepts that he learned in class to analyze the macroeconomic impact of World War II on the U.S. economy. He shared, “I think it is important to have alternative grading methods. It forces students to understand a topic deeply in order to elaborate on it in a theoretical example.”

Alex Capitano ’20 echoed Jack’s belief that the assessments helped him understand and retain the material better, adding, “I really enjoyed having this as an alternative because it gave me an opportunity to think outside the box and learn the content in a way that I could personally understand. It was a lot different from just learning the content out of the book or through a lecture, and this was because it forced me to apply it to the real world.”

Lavallee came up with the concept of Challenge

by Choice after he participated in a Global Online Academy (GOA) cohort for professional development, where he explored alternative assessment methods.

He then was able to use funds from a Class of 1944 50th Reunion Faculty Enrichment Fund to develop the course. “I valued my students’ voices and their ability to make choices. I don’t care if they know what the gross domestic product (GDP) of Canada is—you can ask Siri that. I want them to make connections and think more deeply about the relative GDPs of Canada and Mexico relative to their populations and what that means for the people who live there.”

Of course, there can be occasional challenges with implementing a less traditional way of assessing student learning. For example, while it’s hard for students to complete these projects early in the semester before they learn key concepts, it is also important not to procrastinate and leave dozens or hundreds of points to the end of the semester. To overcome those challenges, Lavallee works closely with students to give them ideas for their assignments, helps them understand why they were awarded a certain number of points, and discusses ways to take a submitted assignment to the next level.

“I don’t have a rubric. This process is based on mutual trust; trust from the students that I will honor their efforts, but also my trust in them that they won’t just plug their way through to get it done.”

This semester, Lavallee is requiring that every student visit a “production site”—any business that produces a good—as part of their Challenge by Choice. They have complete freedom as to what business they visit, how they interact with that business, how to apply economic principles, and how to present their knowledge, but he is looking forward to the creative projects that result.

“The results in the last two years have been astonishing,” he shared. “Seeing how the students have deepened their understanding has been one of my proudest accomplishments as a teacher.”

BONDING ON OUTWARD BOUND

Students in the class of 2023 started the school year with a five-day excursion in the mountains of North Carolina. Students hiked, worked on team building, and explored the wilderness with the North Carolina Outward Bound School in the Pisgah National Forest.

“I cannot think of a better way to kick off Upper School than Outward Bound,” shared 9th grade Form Dean Alyson Kurz. “Watching as they stepped off the bus as trepidatious 8th graders on day one, I was nervous for their experience. However, Outward Bound allowed them to come together to grow into 9th graders with the self-confidence, determination, and sense of community that is necessary to be successful in the Upper School.”

The world our children will one day inherit will look vastly different than the world we were preparing for as children. It took 68 years for airplanes to reach 50 million users, 14 years for computers, three years for Facebook, and only 19 days for the game Pokemon Go.

Today’s world moves fast, and tomorrow’s world may move even faster. While we might not be able to predict what the future holds, we must do all we can to prepare our children to successfully lead their world. If effective leadership in the 2050s looks different from that of the 2000s, we need to identify the skills and traits that will be required for success and cultivate them today.

“This generation will change careers and places more than any other,” observes David Cornell ’82, Managing Director of Consulting Services at EPM Associates.

“You could invent a great product, and it will be obsolete in two years. They’re going to have to continue to reinvent themselves with everything from technology, to corporate structures, to geopolitics constantly changing around them.”

“The world is changing very rapidly,” shares Hyatt President and CEO Mark Hoplamazian ’81. “There’s a lot of disruption in every industry right now. You can’t have a fixed image in your mind or fixed approach.

Your ability to observe, understand, and then adapt, is highly dependent on an intellectual curiosity and a malleable frame of mind for identifying solutions.”

In a future where long-range planning may be precarious, it will take a more flexible, authentic, and empathetic leader to inspire others. According to the EA community, this leader will also need to be a resilient risk-taker, who is open-minded, socially responsible, and constantly learning and growing. We turned to our alumni, faculty, parents, and students to help us identify the most critical skills and traits for tomorrow’s leaders.

The outdated image of a strong leader is someone infallible, unapologetic, and intimidating; someone who stays the course regardless of changing circumstances.

EMPATHETIC Several studies show that empathy is on the decline, with today’s college students scoring 40% lower on a measure of empathy than prior generations. Increasingly, graduates will be entering professions where there is a demand for empathetic approaches to problem-solving and service delivery.

As president and chief executive officer of Hyatt Hotels Corporation, Mark Hoplamazian ’81 oversees more than 875 properties and 120,000 employees in 63 countries. Throughout his 13 years at Hyatt, he has worked Hoplamazian hard to focus company culture on empathy, care, and understanding— a foundation that drives its philanthropy, branding, employee training and recognition, acquisition strategy, and beyond.

“We define care as the combination of empathy plus action,” Hoplamazian explains. By simply serving someone, he says, you are not putting yourself in their shoes, and you are not working to understand how their needs might be different from the next hotel guest’s needs.

“The circumstances of our guests are vast,” he shares, “From baptisms to funerals, from vacations to work. In many ways, we are guests in your life.” While most visitors to Disney hotels are there for a fun vacation, he explains, there may be guests there for another reason. That is where empathy comes in. “If you’re here because your son needs to get chemo down the street and our hotel is the closest, we are there to make sure you have what you need.”

At Snap, Inc., the company behind Snapchat, empathy and service are essential qualities. Sebastian McCall ’09, director in the office of the CEO, shares, “We talk a lot about servant leadership rather than leadership via authority.

McCall It’s a model where you hire people who are deeply brilliant, but ensure that they subscribe to our values. As a leader, I serve them to accomplish this challenging goal that we’ve all signed up for, providing them the comfort they need to achieve at the highest levels.”

When McCall started at Snap, there were only 100 employees. Today, there are close to 3,000. Instead of allowing rapid growth to derail their culture, the leadership team made their values non-negotiable in their hiring practices. “We have a list of behaviors that we distribute regularly on how our employees can be successful,” he explains, “Our co-founder, Bobby Murphy, says it’s literally impossible for someone to be a brilliant jerk.”

At Snap, performance evaluations and compensation are not based solely on accomplishing goals, but also on workplace behavior. But what about if that person is driving sales or is essential to the business? In McCall’s view, this method of leading and motivating a team is not at odds with improved performance. He says, “If you don’t have the ability to build relational capital, you’re going to also be underperforming in your job.”

HUMBLE & AUTHENTIC McCall also emphasized the importance of each and every team member, and how critical it is to trust them and give them the tools to succeed, rather than micromanage through a top-down leadership style. “That type of leadership suggests there’s only one great mind in the room. In reality there are an abundance of great minds. A good leader finds a way to build a tapestry of great people and helps them unleash peak performance.”

The ability to forego individual ego and to embrace the talents of others without being threatened is a critical skill for tomorrow’s leaders. Having humility, openness, and flexibility does not mean one lacks self-confidence, but rather that one possesses the ability to realistically appraise his or her strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and abilities. In a professional context, this mindset allows you to be open to better ways of doing things.

Catherine Hunt Ryan ’99 believes that a truly humble leader will always be willing to get their hands dirty. As the chief financial officer for Bechtel, a global engineering, construction, and project management provider, Ryan works in a heavily male-dominated industry. “In order to be a really good and comprehensive leader, you have to get down to the nuts and bolts,” she says. “You can’t hover at Ryan the 50,000-foot level. Don’t get wrapped up in titles—swallow your pride, and go learn about the things that are integral to making your team successful.” One of the times she was happiest in her professional career, she says, was when she was on the ground, wearing steel-toed boots, a hard hat, and jeans, alongside 6,000 construction workers on an oil and gas project in Louisiana, as she worked to hire welders.

“If you look at any successful person or leader, they will be the first to tell you that growth is hard and that they have a lot of growing left to do,” says Ryan Newman P ’26 ’28, who has spent his career at Goldman Sachs and describes himself as a lifelong student on topics of growth and achievement. “They handle themselves with humble introspection because that’s an essential component to getting to the top of any mountain in the first place.”

“Leaders emerge if others buy into their vision, and people ultimately sign up for authenticity, to share time and energy with others who present an authentic self. You can’t be authentic if you’re not humble.” Newman explains. He went on to share how he tries to live by the concept of “same faces-all places,” meaning, no matter who you are with, or where you are, always be your authentic self. He also believes a leader should work toward creating a safe environment where others can explore their authentic selves.

ESSE QUAM VIDERI Authenticity is a central tenet of the Powers EA experience. Our school motto, Esse Quam Videri (to be rather than to seem to be), is carved in stone on the Class of 1944 Chapel and ever-present on our school seal.

This year’s senior vestry warden, Reid Powers ’20, recently gave a Chapel talk about what EA’s motto means to him. He described how, as a young student, it literally meant “to be yourself,” and “to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.” As he grew, he realized it meant something a little deeper. He began asking himself, Am I putting forth my full effort in everything I do? Am I challenging myself to be better?

Reid discovered that he was being inauthentic if he was not putting forth his full effort in class or on the field. Since he had played soccer since a young age, the sport no longer challenged him athletically.

As a freshman, Reid decided to step outside of his comfort zone and joined the cross country team. Today, one of three senior team captains, Reid has flourished on the team.

During his introduction in Chapel, Jim Farrell ‘82, assistant athletic director and varsity cross country coach, emphasized how Reid’s decision to challenge himself contributed to his success as a leader. “Reid is selfless and puts the needs of the team first.

Moreover, he leads by example, pushing himself and pushing the boys on the team to give their best effort.”

OPEN-MINDED In 2016, Harvard Business Review published a listing of the top 10 leadership competencies, as identified by 195 business leaders in 15 countries. One of the most-cited was the flexibility to change opinions and openness to considering multiple viewpoints. What’s more, research has shown that cultural fluency is linked with improved financial performance, out-of-the-box thinking, and spurs creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Tomorrow’s leaders will need to be skilled at managing teams and accomplishing objectives in environments where they might not speak the language or understand local traditions and customs. After 17 years of working around the world for Bechtel, Ryan feels the key to effective leadership is to invest in teamwork and celebrate achievements together.

“I work in Saudi Arabia now, and I’ve spent a lot of time in India and other places where it is not the norm to see women in leadership positions,” she shares. “You have to establish some victories early on.

To build relationships in teams, you need a series of successes and ways to build trust and confidence within the team.” Bechtel’s infrastructure projects can cost billions of dollars and span years, so Ryan often tries to find incremental milestones and interim wins to help a team come together. By celebrating progress toward a common objective, she says, you can work through what might have initially been perceived as a challenging proposition.

At EA, one way that students are exposed to different viewpoints and culture is through the Chapel program. One of the central tenets of the Episcopal religion, and other Anglican traditions, is the concept of Via Media, which in Latin translates to “the middle way.” Father Tim Gavin,

Hon. explains this concept as the ability to be in a room with people of extremely different beliefs or ideologies, respect and appreciate their differences, and serve the crucial role of holding them all together.

What originated as “the middle way” between Puritanism and Roman Catholicism led to other Episcopal values that permeate today’s student experience, such as radical hospitality, openness to varying opinions, acceptance of Gavin differences, and holding all human beings as equals. Today, these values enable our Chapel program to speak to those who celebrate different faith traditions, or none at all. Father Gavin explains, “Our job is not to convince you to join our religion, or even to believe in God. It is to help each individual develop and to encourage participation in something bigger than themselves. We want to help students grow into the people they are meant to be.”

For tomorrow’s leaders, the lessons our students learn in the Chapel can be translated into their workplaces, communities, and beyond. Father Gavin explained he tries to help students understand that others can and will disagree with you, and that disagreements are not only okay, but can actually be beneficial. “You can still hold onto your conviction and entertain the possibility that you might not be right,” he says. “For example, if you are interviewing a candidate for a job opening, you may have a favorite candidate, but you have to be open to the possibility that you may have blind spots about that person. I want to hear my colleagues’ views. You need to get feedback from others because you want to make the best possible decision for everyone involved.”

RISK TAKER Most people often avoid taking risks due to a fear of failure. Leaders of tomorrow need to recognize that failure is not a permanent condition, but an essential step toward Buggy success. Gina Buggy, Hon., EA’s longtime athletic director and varsity field hockey coach, feels that failure is nothing to be ashamed of, but something that can actually propel you forward.

Coach Buggy has been helping studentathletes learn to use failure as fuel for more than three decades. “Success in life will require coping skills, grit, and resolve,” she says. “Our hope is that the athletic experience at EA prepares young people to manage adversity, learn from our failures, and gain strength by dealing with the inevitable bumps in the road.”

She encourages her coaches and trainers to motivate student-athletes to push themselves, to take risks, and to self-reflect on both good and bad outcomes. “Our students need to learn how to reframe disappointments and view them more as opportunities to grow,” she shares.

Cornell agrees. “After defeat, you have to pick yourself up and figure out what went wrong,” he explains. While he speaks of failure as an opportunity to test oneself, deal with setbacks, and continue to improve, he also recognizes that failure teaches you where best to deploy your energy.

“Everyone has different gifts,” he shares.

“My dad played basketball, and I went out for the team at EA. I showed up to my first practice, and Coach Doc came up to me in the middle of practice, put his arm around me, and walked me downstairs right up to

Coach Compton and said ‘I’d like you to meet your newest wrestler, Dave Cornell.’

I was a complete failure as a basketball player, but I had a different path.”

Cornell feels that when people avoid risk and narrowly define ‘success’ as getting into one of a few schools, or graduating with perfect grades, or having a winning season, they could miss out on other opportunities. “People get so fixated on one single success path. Whether in sports or academics, there’s always going to be someone bigger, stronger, faster, smarter than you,” he says. “That’s where you need perspective, to learn how to cope with failure, and to keep going.”

Cornell

Survival rates for new businesses are typically low, but entrepreneurs who have failed before are more likely to succeed, according to a Harvard Business School study. “Sometimes a team that was previously successful can be rendered incapacitated by a change in regulation, the competitive landscape, or folks may just lose their drive,” Cornell says.

With quickly shifting market conditions and rapidly developing technologies, tomorrow’s leaders will need to be nimble and comfortable taking risks. Cornell explains, “Your company might make the most beautiful buggy whips known to man, and you may have the best buggy whip sales staff in the free world, but if the horse and carriage are being displaced by the automobile, it’s time to reinvent yourself.”

SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE Increasingly, businesses and business leaders are being measured on much more than delivering shareholder value. Recently, through the Business Roundtable’s Principles of Corporate Governance, 181 CEOs redefined the purpose of a corporation and committed to: deliver value to their customers; invest in their employees through fair benefits, compensation, training, and education; deal fairly with their suppliers; support communities and protect the environment; and generate long-term shareholder value.

“A long time ago, before the idea of shareholder primacy, it was believed in our society that companies were here to better the community. Now, the pendulum has swung somewhere in between,” says Agarwal Medha Agarwal ’06, a principal at Redpoint Ventures in San Francisco and the first female investor hired there.

“I don’t think all business decisions are deciding between profit and purpose,” she continued. One of the brands that her company invests in is Brandless, which helps everyone have access to a wide array of consumer packaged goods by cutting out what they call the ‘brand tax.’ “For every purchase, Brandless donates food to those in need. Consumers go to Brandlesss because of their prices,” Agarwal says, “but also because their values align.”

Hyatt strives to fulfill its purpose, We care for people so they can be their best, in

everything it does, explains Hoplamazian.

Hyatt ensures that, throughout its corporation and supply chains, it is acting responsibly. For Hyatt, that could mean anything from combating human trafficking, to ethically and sustainably sourcing seafood, to helping colleagues obtain education and training, or investing in education and vocational training in the communities in which it operates.

Importantly, Hoplamazian does not believe that all of these efforts are at odds with profitability. “The recent statement by the Business Roundtable states that it’s my job as CEO to manage the friction between doing all these great things and maximizing shareholder value,” he says. “I reject the idea that these are opposing forces. If you define that purpose correctly, and it’s true and resonant for your employees, you should be able to leverage that into much greater value over time.”

Father Gavin feels that really getting to know the needs of others is at the core of being purpose-oriented and socially responsible. “We do a good job at helping our students make every attempt to see the world through someone else’s experience.

In our service programs, when our students volunteer at a soup kitchen, for example, they actually sit down with the people they are serving and talk to them and learn about their experiences. Service is all about making human contact.”

GROWTH-MINDED As many industries identify talent acquisition priorities, growth mindset often tops the list of desirable traits. The ability to remain curious and to be hyper-focused on continual learning and growth does not come naturally to everyone.

When Ryan hires for Bechtel, she often looks for someone who is not satisfied with the status quo. “They need to have a thirst for a very steep learning curve,” she says. “Whether you’re hiring for an administrative assistant or someone to lead a business, I want someone who wants to continually self-improve and enrich themselves and those around them.”

A growth-mindset and effort tend to go hand-in-hand. Hoplamazian feels that if we evaluate people based on their effort, not just on outcome, we would be rewarding more important skills. Hyatt has partnered with an education platform to provide free access to world-class education online. “I was fascinated by it because the competition was based on two equally-weighted dimensions, one being mastery of the material, but the other being grit,” he shared. Evaluators were able to see how participants progressed through the course material, and how their behavior changed when they tackled subjects they did not know well, and how often they returned to sections to study before re-attempting the tests.

Maintaining a growth-mindset through challenging environments and situations can help leaders model resiliency and develop character. Andre Stephano ’89 is a former U.S. Marine sergeant and intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve, who has done counterterrorism work in the U.S. and the Middle East. On setbacks, he shared, “Sometimes you set a goal for yourself, give all you have, and you lose

everything that matters. You have to look in the mirror and decide what went wrong and how you are going to adjust and persevere.

When you face these setbacks squarely, you’ll find your character and resilience.”

Stephano served in units and civilian companies focused on preventing terrorism in the U.S. and also did reserve service in the Persian Gulf on the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise in 2004 and off Western Africa in 2005. Deployed to Afghanistan in 2014, Stephano ran a national counterterrorism program training Afghans in counterintelligence tactics to prevent terrorist attacks on Afghan and NATO soldiers and to track bomb-making networks. Throughout his career, he has had to persevere through difficult physical and mental challenges. “The key,” he says, “after you face the realities behind any major setback is to stay focused on specific, practical steps forward and to stay positive.

Fixating on the negative makes recovery infinitely more difficult. Whether you made the critical mistakes or were overcome by events outside your control, you can always recover and rebuild. To be sure, it’s easier said than done, but true.”

In addition to persevering through setbacks, tomorrow’s leaders will need to resist feeling disheartened and embrace those experiences as learning opportunities. “I find young people set lofty goals, which I applaud them for, but they can get discouraged when they don’t achieve them right away,” says Newman.

“They can give up on themselves too quickly. Perhaps if they spent more time exploring the why—the reason they want to achieve their goal—they would find there’s still immense value and meaning from the experience, regardless of whether or not they achieve their goal.”

When the Students Become the Teachers

Attracting bright and passionate young people to the field of education is more important than ever. In a March 2019 study, the Economic Policy Institute reported that there is a significant (and growing) shortage of qualified teachers in the United States, especially in low-income areas. Every year, fewer and fewer students enroll in teacher-preparation programs nationwide, 33% fewer, in fact, between 2010 and 2017 according to Title II National Teacher Preparation Data.

EA’s Horizons program began in 2013 and has helped stem the “summer slide” for hundreds of lower and middle school-aged students. It has also given many EA student-volunteers an opportunity to see firsthand the impact they can have through a career in teaching. “Horizons provides valuable, real-world experience that shows students the joys, rewards, and impact of a teaching career,” said Horizons at EA Executive Director Kathy Jacoby P ‘13 ‘15 ‘19.

Becca Archambault ’16 is a senior education major at Vanderbilt University and was a rising junior when she first volunteered with Horizons at EA. Becca recalled the powerful connection she felt that first summer with the Horizons students; “I got to work with two of the smartest 2nd graders that I’d ever met. But the amount of rejection they experienced in school, it really touched me. I thought, ‘How could they be this smart and have people push them down so much to the point where they don’t think they’re bright?’ Those two boys were the reason I kept coming back each summer.”

When her family moved, Becca began volunteering at a Horizons program in a rural area of Maryland. In the town of 500, Becca found that rural schools suffer from the same problems as urban schools. She has continued to work with Horizons while in college.

Sarah Keffer ’17 was also introduced to teaching by volunteering for Horizons. Currently in her junior year in Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development, Sarah is studying educational policy and political science. Her middle school soccer coach, Horizons at EA Program Director Rowena Lesher, encouraged her to help out with Horizons, and she has been in love with teaching ever since.

“Originally, I resisted teaching because my mom is a teacher at EA.” Sarah’s mother, Alison Keffer, Hon., teaches 3rd grade in the Lower School. “But, when I came back to Horizons for a visit after high school, I was so touched that the students remembered me, running down the hallway to hug me. I returned to BC that fall and immediately transferred to the School of Education. These kids inspire me when they come to school with so much energy, joy, and desire to learn.”

Sarah and Becca both are glad to have had the opportunity to explore teaching as a career option through volunteer work. “The field of teaching is one of the most authentic opportunities to work alongside young minds and grow their natural abilities in encouraging ways,” said Lesher. “Our six-week summer program serves as not only a setting for seasoned teachers to grow professionally, but for young people interested in the field to receive mentorship and hands-on experience in an intimate classroom size setting.”

But to follow their hearts and build careers in teaching, both Becca and Sarah have found that significant challenges may lie ahead. “You don’t understand how exhausting it is until you spend a day teaching,” Becca said. “A big misconception is that teachers get a degree and they’re done, but there’s so much continuous learning that they need to do.”

Sarah agreed. “The first thing people say to me is ‘you’re going to make no money.’ Or they think teaching is so easy, that you just give them a coloring book. But I am so fortunate that my parents are supportive of me picking a fulfilling career for myself. I’m comfortable knowing that this is what makes me incredibly happy, and the rest I can work with.”

Becca shared, “I had a professor who told us, ‘to be a bad teacher is easy, to be a great teacher is the hardest job in the world.’” Becca recognizes the importance of reaching every student differently, knowing that each comes to the classroom with separate and distinct strengths, weaknesses, cultural backgrounds, and home lives. She spent a semester teaching first grade in South Africa, where she had 35 children in her class. One girl spoke no English, and teachers thought she was not able to count, either. After Becca sat with her for a while, she realized the girl, in fact, did know how to count, but did not know that was what she was being asked to do. Without the small class sizes to focus on individual students’ needs, many children can struggle to learn foundational skills like reading, writing, and basic mathematics.

Having the time to give one-on-one attention is just the beginning, though, because teachers need to know how to motivate and encourage each child differently, according to their learning styles. To help their teachers meet the specific needs of low-income students, Horizons provides several trainings, including one from the organization Ramapo for Children. “The Ramapo training helped us identify each student’s behavioral issues and see them instead as strengths that can be used to motivate them,” shared Sarah.

For example, over the summer, Sarah had a student who was boisterous, and rambunctious, and who tended to boss the other children around. This student siphoned off a lot of the teacher’s energy and attention. Using what she had learned in training, Sarah began to see this student as a natural leader, who could be given tasks in the classroom to help focus her energy in constructive ways. “Giving her tasks to be a leader,” Sarah said, “I saw her blossom in that role.”

“We are so delighted that both Sarah and Becca were inspired by their experience to explore teaching as a career choice,” said Jacoby. Lesher agreed, sharing, “Both Becca and Sarah share a special adoration for children, and we are so fortunate that our students were on the receiving end.”

As national statistics demonstrate, our schools need more teachers who have the passion and compassion necessary to go the extra mile, put in the extra hours, and stay current in their teaching practice to make each day a successful day in the classroom.

Now, as part of the community of teachers, Becca sees her own EA teachers differently. “There’s a reason why many of EA’s teachers gave up their careers in the private sector to teach,” Becca says. “They have so much love for their students. I finally understand now how much they cared for us and how much planning they have to do every single day to stay at the cutting edge of the developments in teaching.”

CELEBRATING OUR ALUMNI

This past spring, guests gathered in the Class of 1944 Chapel to honor the 2019 recipients of the Alumni Awards and the inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Held during Alumni Weekend, the Alumni Awards allowed us to celebrate our alumni’s great achievements while at EA and beyond.

At this year’s ceremony, members of the EA basketball community surprised longtime coach Daniel “Doc” Dougherty, Hon. with a special endowed scholarship in his name. After Coach Doc presented Gerald Henderson ’06 with his Athletic Hall of Fame Award, Henderson returned the favor, asking all of the basketball alumni in the audience to stand as Coach Doc accepted a commemorative plaque.

Another special moment occurred when Tom Dalzell ’69 accepted the Distinguished Alumnus Award, amid applause from many of his classmates who were in attendance for their 50th reunion. The class had bonded over an op-ed written by Dalzell and Van Kalbach ’69 their senior year, reprinted in their 50th reunion Tabula, which advocated for several reforms that have since come to pass, including the admission of girls to EA. At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, the awardees, their families, and many classmates celebrated at the AllAlumni Tent Party on the Clark Campus Green.

2019 ALUMNI AWARD WINNERS 2019 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD RECIPIENT

Thomas M. Dalzell ’69 For his 47 consecutive years of public service, steadfast and stalwart commitment to human rights and equal justice, and for his dedication to EA, Tom Dalzell ‘69 is one of the most deserving recipients of this distinguished award.

Tom was academically ranked number one in his class; he was a strong athlete in soccer and other sports; President of the Glee Club; Class Secretary and Treasurer; and a member of the Domino Club and Junto. In a Scholium article at the time, Tom and classmate Van Kalbach advocated for better racial integration, co-education, and greater student involvement in the administration of the school.

After graduating in 1969, Tom attended the University of Pennsylvania. After then-chaplain Sandy McCurdy introduced him to leaders from the United Farm Workers, he went to work for them in rural California. Like Abraham Lincoln, Tom “read the law” rather than attending law school, and became the first successful candidate to do so since 1945. He represented the UFW, and later the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, in the California Court of Appeals, the California Supreme Court, the National Labor Relations Board, and the U.S. District Court.

Throughout his career, he has supported workers’ rights and safety. In more recent years, he has become an expert linguist, widely known for his expertise on slang in the U.S. In 2014, Tom organized his 45th EA class reunion as a “service weekend” to visit a sick classmate, Criswell Davis, in Ohio to help him with his home. Tom’s honor, integrity, and selflessness make him a representative of the very best true spirit of The Episcopal Academy.

Tom currently serves as Vice President of the California Federation of Labor and has lived in Berkeley, California, since 1984. He has four children, ranging in age from 15 to 35.

2019 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT

William Lilley, III ’55 In the fall of 2018, Mr. and Mrs. Lilley established the Lilley Fellowship Fund to support Upper School students as they pursue an independent study, culminating in a capstone project. The Fellowship is modeled after Yale University’s Scholars of the House program that ran from 1945-1995. Fellowships are awarded to students who exemplify academic curiosity, intellectual rigor, and scholarly passion.

Bill was a “lifer” (K to 12) at EA and, according to the Tabula, “developed into one of the most active classmates.” He was competitive in football, but the highlight was his perfect extra point against undefeated Penn Charter to propel EA to a 7-6 victory. His activities included serving on the Scholium, the Tabula, and the Vestry. The Tabula commented that Bill “showed evidence of his generosity, intelligence, and friendly attitude...which will certainly benefit him in future years.”

And it did. Through careers in education, public service, journalism, and business, he has always been highly respected. Bill graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959 with high marks.

He received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to attend the Yale Ph.D. program in American Studies, where his dissertation won one of Yale’s highest awards. He served as a member of Yale’s history faculty for eight years. In Washington, D.C., he helped launch a weekly publication, The National Journal, covering public policy before he began working in the Federal Government in 1972 as the Deputy Secretary of HUD, the Director of the President’s Wage & Price Council, and then, finally, as the Staff Director of the House Budget Committee. After his years in public service, Bill joined CBS prior to starting InContext with a CBS colleague. InContext is a geo-analytical mapping software company that was acquired by ChoicePoint Inc., the nation’s leading public record company.

In the 50th reunion Tabula, Bill wrote, “Episcopal always has been a formative part of my life, but three values come to mind — I can hear Dr. Haslam repeating in his pre-lunch talks — always work hard, always improve your intellect, and always be loyal to your friends.” We are forever grateful to Bill and his family for the impact they will have on generations of EA students.

2019 ALUMNI COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT

John R. Rosenberg, M.D. ’64 As an emergency physician, John has traveled the globe bringing medical relief to those in need, improving and saving countless lives.

After graduating from Princeton University, John attended Hahnemann Medical School (now Drexel), and completed his residency at Pacific Presbyterian (now California Pacific Medical Center) in San Francisco. He worked as an ER physician for 33 years with the Permanente Medical Group at Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City, retiring in 2006, after a term as staff president.

Since traveling to Nepal in 1971 and becoming aware of the poverty and need for medical services, John has traveled to remote underserved areas in Tibet, the Philippines, and India, over 30 times, conducting over 200 medical camps and treating over 100,000 patients. What started with sharing his supply of first aid equipment has evolved into a complex logistical effort, including camps involving scores of medical personnel, thousands of patients, and extensive equipment to enable lifesaving surgeries.

Sixteen of those trips were to the Philippines with Philos Health, which has dramatically changed the health of Jagna, population 35,000, through chronic disease management, annual surgical missions, a nutrition program feeding every child, and even a dental program and a community radio station. “I love working in the Philippines. People are so warm and appreciative,” John said.

Another organization dear to his heart is Project Avary, a summer camp for children of incarcerated parents. Since retiring, John has been camp doctor every summer for these children and watched them grow into successful college graduates. On balancing his professional career, his family, and his many charitable activities, John shared, “It’s exhausting but exhilarating, and so rewarding. I believe we get at least as much as we give. And there is so much that needs doing.”

John is on the Board of Directors of Philos Health and Project Avary. This summer he plans a women’s health education and clinical care mission to Eastern Tibet. He married his wife, Lynne, in 1973.

They have three children, six grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

2019 ALUMNI AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ARTS RECIPIENT

Maggie Malone ’94 Maggie Malone holds a bachelor of arts degree from Yale and a master of fine arts degree in screenwriting from UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. She has a background in television production and development and has worked as a reader for William Morris, Showtime, and ABC. She began her artistic career in literary development at the Manhattan Theater Club in New York City. After her move to Los Angeles in 2001, she served as the Producing Director of the Black Dahlia theatre and moved into film as director of development for Gary Ross’ company at Universal, working on such films as The Tale of Despereaux and Seabiscuit.

Maggie served as head of creative affairs for the Walt Disney Animation Studios for four years out of her 13-year tenure at the company. During that period, Maggie helped develop the story for 15 films, including the Academy Award-winning features of Zootopia, Frozen, and Big Hero 6, as well as Moana, Wreck-it Ralph, Tangled, The Princess and the Frog, the Tinker Bell films of the DisneyToons Studio division, and Disney’s animated feature, Ralph Breaks the Internet.

She’s also the co-author of The Art of Moana and The Art of Wreck-It Ralph, which give an inside look into the creative processes behind finding the artistic look of a film.

Last year, Maggie traded her Mickey Mouse ears in for some minion goggles. She is now an executive producer at Illumination Entertainment, home of the Despicable Me, Secret Life of Pets, and Sing franchises.

She was originally inspired to take on an artistic career by her parents, who founded and performed in amateur Shakespeare societies in Connecticut, Philadelphia, and North Carolina.

She absolutely loves the collaborative environment of animation and likens it to the amateur theatrical societies she knew growing up.

Maggie is grateful to Lee Billmyer, Hon. for her early support and encouragement of her writing; Crawford Hill ‘70 for serving as her secret science expert for film research (including on Zootopia, among others); and the late Bob Cronin, Hon. for showing her how to chortle supportively, which, in an environment full of directors, animators, actors, and writers all attempting to land animated comedies, is greatly appreciated.

2019 YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENTS Elisse Karen Douglass ’05 Elisse Douglass displayed her focus, persistence, drive, intellect, and positive attitude as a Buckley Scholar at EA. As a senior, she received the Greatest Athletic Contribution Award and the prestigious Girls’ Sportsmanship Cup Award. In 2009, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in architecture from Columbia University, where, as at EA, she was an outstanding track athlete.

She began her business career at Turett Collaborative, as project manager, and at IMB Development Corp., as a director. While in business school at UC Berkeley-Haas School, she was awarded a Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship and was also a Robert Toigo MBA Fellow.

As an assistant vice president at Sares Regis Group of Northern California, she led the investment and development of over one million square feet of residential, retail, and office space for public entities, nonprofits, and public companies in the Bay Area. Since 2018, she has led urban investment and development projects for Signature Development Group. In this role, she focuses on bringing innovative residential, retail, and commercial projects to a growing neighborhood central to the city’s economy. She is passionate about equitable, responsible, and inclusionary development that creates opportunities for all people who live and work in Oakland.

She serves on the Board of Directors for the Downtown Oakland Association Community Benefit District and Above the Bottom Line, a national corporate social responsibility engagement platform. She also works with business owners seeking venture capital for innovative retail and real estate-based businesses that create jobs and positively impact communities.

Sarah Chrisman Steele ’06 Sarah Steele began doing theatre in Philadelphia at eight years old. Throughout elementary and middle school, Sarah auditioned for films, television shows, and plays in New York City every few weeks. While in the Upper School at Episcopal, her life profoundly changed when she was cast in the movie Spanglish as Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni’s daughter. Sarah is grateful to have been able to come back to Episcopal at 16 years old after filming Spanglish to complete her studies and apply to college. Her manager still jokes about how after that huge movie, her next job was Rosalind in Domino Club’s As You Like It. No stranger to balancing schoolwork and a career, Sarah continued working while earning a bachelor of arts degree in English literature at Columbia University, most notably in the movie Please Give with Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt and the Off-Broadway play Speech and Debate. After graduating college, Sarah spent two years doing Off-Broadway theatre, starring in Slowgirl and All-American at Lincoln Center and Russian Transport at The New Group, among others. In 2014 she was cast in her first Broadway show, The Country House, playing Blythe Danner’s college-aged granddaughter. From 2015 to 2017, Sarah starred in the Broadway play The Humans, which won the Tony Award for Best Play and earned Sarah a Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble.

Sarah currently stars as Marissa Gold on the critically-acclaimed CBS All Access show The Good Fight, a spinoff of The Good Wife, in which she played the same character.

Christopher B. Roe ’86 A great all-around athlete, Chris earned a total of 11 letters in four sports while at EA: three in soccer, five in wrestling, two in lacrosse, and one in track and field. He was a member of five Inter-Ac Championship teams: two in soccer and three in wrestling.

In soccer, Chris started at the forward position for three years.

As a junior, he scored in EA’s 1-0 overtime win over Penn Charter, clinching the 1984 Inter-Ac Championship for EA. As a senior, he led the team in scoring with 20 goals in 18 games. The team again won the Inter-Ac Championship with an overall record of 17-1 and 9-1 in the Inter-Ac. In a game against Harriton, Chris scored four goals in one half. He also had a three-goal “hat trick” in a 5-0 victory over Chestnut Hill Academy.

In wrestling, Chris was a member of three Inter-Ac Championship teams, including the team he captained as a senior. In his senior year match against archrival The Haverford School, his decisive pin of his opponent won the match for EA, 28-26.

That meet decided the 1985-86 Inter-Ac Championship and is regarded as one of the most exciting, dramatic, and memorable wrestling meets in Inter-Ac history.

In lacrosse, Chris was a starter at the midfield position. As a junior, he played in the 1985 State Boys’ Lacrosse Championship Game. As a senior co-captain, he helped lead the team to the state quarterfinals, where EA was narrowly defeated 8-7 at Lower Merion.

In track and field, Chris earned a letter his senior year for his pole vaulting. This was particularly remarkable because his commitments as co-captain on the lacrosse team meant he had to practice vaulting on his own.

Chris went on to University of Virginia, where he played lacrosse for four years, one of which he was a member of UVA’s NCAA semifinalist team.

Page Pearcy ’96 Page earned a total of 12 EA letters: four in field hockey, five in swimming and diving, and three in lacrosse. She was the recipient of the Dorothy Lee Haslam Sportsmanship Cup, three-time recipient of the EA Tri-Sport Award, and elected president of the EA Athletic Association.

In field hockey, Page played varsity for four years, three of which were Inter-Ac championship years. During her senior year, she was elected co-captain, named All Main Line First Team, and awarded the Bicentennial Class Award, recognizing her spirit, effort, and sportsmanship.

In lacrosse, Page played varsity for three years, one of which was an Inter-Ac championship year. In senior year, she was named All Main Line Second Team.

And without a doubt, Page will be mostly remembered for her achievements in the pool as both sprinter and diver. Page was a varsity swim team member for five years. She was selected co-captain her senior year. While diving at EA, she set pool and school records, one of which still stands. Page was named All Main Line First Team and placed first at the Inter-Ac Diving Championships for four straight years. She was awarded the Moyer Kulp Bowl in her senior year. At the Eastern Independent School Championships, Page placed first in diving (for three years, setting new meet records two of those years), placed in swimming events six years in a row, and was named Meet MVP in 1996.

She was a three-time individual All American in diving and a member of multiple All American relay teams in swimming. During her senior year, the National Interscholastic Coaches Association rated Page as the number one independent school diver in the nation.

Page continued diving at Princeton University, where she earned four varsity letters, set a pool record on the three meter springboard at Columbia University, and contributed to an Ivy League Championship in 2000.

Jerome “Gerald” M. Henderson, Jr. ’06 Gerald started at EA in 2nd grade and is—arguably—one of the best all-around athletes to ever attend Episcopal. He lettered in and earned All Inter-Ac First Team honors in golf as a freshman and was a two-time Inter-Ac champion in the high jump and triple jump in track and field.

However, it is undoubtedly in basketball that he’ll be forever remembered by the EA community. Gerald was a four-year varsity letter winner in basketball and was named All Inter-Ac First Team in 2004, 2005, and 2006. He scored 2,059 career points and was named First Team All Main Line in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. He was named the Main Line Times Athlete of the Year and—along with another outstanding player, his teammate, Wayne Ellington—was awarded the prestigious 2006 Markward Award, which recognizes the best high school basketball players in the greater Philadelphia region. In his senior year, Gerald was ranked as the 18th best high school senior in the nation by The Recruiting Services Consensus Index.

After graduating from EA, he played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils for three years. A starter each year, Gerald played in 103 games and scored 1,262 points. Foregoing his senior season, Gerald entered the 2009 NBA draft and was drafted 12th overall by the Charlotte Hornets. He played for them from 2009-2015. He played for the Portland Trailblazers for the 2015-16 season and returned to Philadelphia to play for the Sixers for the 2016-17 season. Gerald has missed the last two NBA seasons, recovering from both hip and Achilles injuries. In the meantime, he has joined the Fox Sports southeast broadcasting network as a basketball analyst covering the Charlotte Hornets. Broadcasting has always been an interest of Gerald’s, and he plans to continue once his playing days are complete.

2003 Girls’ Tennis Team Between 1998 and 2018, the EA girls’ tennis teams won the Inter-Ac Championship every year but three. Perhaps most impressive of all those great teams was the 2003 girls’ tennis team, virtually dominating all competition with a season record of 7-0 in the Inter-Ac and 14-0 overall. With the entire team returning from its undefeated season in 2002, the girls knew they would be challenged with each opposing team’s best effort. Non-league additions to their schedule were perennial powers Harriton, Radnor, and Conestoga, on top of an already very competitive Inter-Ac league. The team worked hard in practice and supported each other throughout the year.

1995 Boys’ Four with Coxswain The 1995 Boys’ Varsity 4+ is the most accomplished rowing team in EA history.

The crew comprised class of ‘95 seniors Austin Whitman (stroke), Demetrios Hadgis (3-seat), Edmund W. Golaski (2-seat), Tobin Fisher (bow), and Bobby Serpente ‘97 (cox). The crew swept the season’s three biggest races and became the first EA crew to compete in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England.

For the four seniors, the 1995 season capped four years of rowing in blue and white. EA’s rowing program was still fairly new, but the team found its place on the podium through hard training and the unfailing support of parents and the EA community.

In the City Championships, the ‘95 crew soundly defeated all the powerhouse high school crews in the Philadelphia area. At the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, one of the most competitive and prestigious prep school crew championships in the country, the EA boys again won by open water. One hundred and ninety-four high schools, 933 boats, and 5,500 athletes squared off. The EA crew won their event in a blistering time of 4:46.8, beating crews from St. Joe’s Prep, Atlantic City High School, and previous champion, The Hun School. The crew’s regular season ended with another open-water victory at the U.S. National Championships in Mercer County Park, New Jersey. This completed their “triple crown” of U.S. championship races.

As a result of these victories, they earned an invitation to the Henley Royal Regatta. The crew raced in the Britannia Challenge Cup against club, collegiate, and national teams. In their first match, the crew upset a collegiate four from Trinity College, Dublin. In their second race, they suffered their only loss of the season against an older crew from Henley Boat Club. Notably, the Henley Club’s rowers outweighed the EA boys by an average of 18 pounds per rower!

Each of the rowers continued to row at the collegiate level: Whitman at Dartmouth; Hadgis at Penn; Golaski at MIT; and Fisher at Yale. Serpente coxed another two years at EA. Fall 2019

Baseball 12-12 The team played to a 12-12 record for the 2019 season. The early season highlights came during a spring training trip to Florida, where the team played six winning games. Home play featured an impressive schedule against the top teams in the area. Six players garnered All-League recognition, one on the First Team.

Girls’ Golf 8-0

Inter-Ac Champions For the second consecutive year, the team went undefeated in match play. Senior captains Minjee Cho, Grace Reilly, and Cam Stapleton set ambitious goals for the team. It took a team effort to attain an undefeated record, win the league title, and set new records. For the first time, the team had three different players shoot in the 30s – Cam, Kathleen Mark ’21, and Lauren Jones ’21. Kathleen’s 33 was a new low score for the EA program. Lauren was the lowest scorer on the EA team and for the league. New low team scores (201) were set at White Manor Country Club, the team’s home course, for all visiting courses. Seven players qualified and played in the League Championship, and three placed in the top five – Lauren (2nd), Amanda Jones ‘20 (4th) and Kathleen (5th).

Boys’ & Girls’ Crew The rowing season started, as usual, with some cold days but the team forged ahead and competed successfully in the Manny Flick Series through the months of March and April. The team showed a great deal of flexibility, competing in different events and learning new skills in both sculling and sweep disciplines. The young team earned three medals (one gold) at the Philadelphia City Championships, one medal at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, and four spots in the finals of the SRAA Nationals.

Girls’ Lacrosse 18-1 Inter-Ac Champions

The team slogan for the 2019 season was “ALL IN.” This motto helped motivate every action on and off the field, resulting in a remarkably successful season. The program boasted Top 20 national rankings (Inside Lacrosse, US Lacrosse Magazine) and still holds the #1 spot in Pennsylvania. With an 18-game winning streak, the team took home the Inter-Ac Girls’ Lacrosse Championship title for the third consecutive year, the 20th in program history. Six players were named All Inter-Ac; Olivia Dirks ’19 was selected as the league’s MVP; three were named USL All-American; three were named USL All-Academic; and multiple players hit major statistical milestones and broke team records. The team’s phenomenal success was a result of the outstanding leadership demonstrated by the team’s five seniors, who graduated after four years in the varsity program with a 44-4 Inter-Ac record. Coach Josie Tomaino was also named US Lacrosse/Eastern Pennsylvania Coach of the Year.

Boys’ Tennis 7-6 The team had some impressive victories and earned a fourth-place finish in the annual George C. Shafer Memorial Doubles Tournament, ahead of all the other schools in the Inter-Ac. Under the leadership of senior captains Aantorik Ganguly and Alec Austin, the new crop of freshmen made remarkable progress, not just with racket skills, but in developing the grit and resilience so essential to success both on and off the court.

Several school records were set during the season: 100m (Bush), twice with the 200m (Zimmerman & Bush), 400m (Zimmerman), twice with the 4x400m Relay (Bush, Folk, Wilson, and Zimmerman) & (Wilson, CJ Jones ‘22, Bush, and Zimmerman). Peter Lim ’21 tied a 47-year-old pole vault record (13’6”). Jones qualified for the freshmen 400m New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

Boys’ Lacrosse 12-7 Boys’ Track & Field At the Penn Relays, the 4x400m team of Jack Bush ’19, Malcolm Folk ’21, Sam Wilson ’19, and Chris Zimmerman ’19 won the Inter-Ac heat, qualified for the Philadelphia-Area Championship, and broke the school’s 4x400m record.

Another highlight came at the Delaware County Championship meet. The boys took home the title in the Small Schools Division for the second year in a row.

Overall, the team finished fourth at the Inter-Ac Championship, just two points behind third place. Zimmerman won the 400m, and our 4x400m relay team

With a strong returning group, the schedule was designed to challenge the team against one of the toughest schedules in the country. Early battles vs. Gilman School, St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School, Landon High School, St. Mary’s High School, and the Hill Academy prepared the boys well for the stretch run. The team went on an impressive nine-game winning streak.

They finished the regular season third in the league, followed by a first-round victory in the Inter-Ac Tournament against Germantown Academy. The season ended in a hard-fought loss (10-8) to Malvern Prep in the semi-finals.

Girls’ Track & Field For the first time, the team qualified for the Penn Relays 4 x 800 Small Schools Division. Caitlin Jorgensen ’19, Lauren Weil ’19, Casey Kinniry ’20, and Jess Miller ’21 ran a season’s best 9:45. The team qualified after winning the event at the Delco Relays. Kat Harrar ‘21 jumped over 34’ in the triple jump and won the Inter-Ac Championship. Katie Brian ‘21 tied the school record in the pole vault.

Cami Beaulieu ‘22 took third at the Inter-Ac Finals and won her preliminary heat at PAISAA in the 110H.

Softball 15-6 The girls’ softball team battled to 6-4 in the Inter-Ac. As a team, the girls had 156 hits: 115 singles, 31 doubles, six triples, and four homeruns. They had 69 stolen bases, 131 runs, and 87 RBIs. The team had a combined batting average of .286, with an on-base percentage of 35.5% and a slugging percent of 35.7%.

This dynamic team earned some respect in the league, finishing second behind the tough Penn Charter team.

Stage Studio

LES MISÉRABLES: A TECHNICAL AND CREATIVE FEAT This past May, the Domino Club’s production of Broadway classic Les Misérables wowed audiences with impressive new stage technology, stunning costumes, brilliant musical talent, and more.

Les Mis proved to be ambitious in every way, including the largest cast and crew in Domino history. More than 80 Upper School students tackled poverty, grief, rebellion, and passion to bring the show’s difficult themes to life.

The production was also a technical feat, with a motorized, revolving stage, nearly 400 costumes and wigs, elaborate make-up that aged actors throughout the show’s decadeslong timeline, and hundreds of props.

The number of musicians required to handle the scope of the score also proved to be a challenge. For the first time, musical director Jim Erwin conducted his student and faculty musicians in the Upper School orchestra room down the hallway from the theater, rather than in the theater itself.

Watching for musical cues via livestream, the orchestra played for one hour and 15 minutes straight in the first act alone.

In the end, the cast and crew of Les Misérables did more than perform classic songs like I Dreamed a Dream, One Day More, and On My Own: they showed that all things are possible with vision, dedication, and creativity. .

MAINSTAGE THEATER NAMED IN HONOR OF THE CARRAFIELL FAMILY

CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

After 10 years of playing host to performances, dance festivals, awards ceremonies, featured speakers, and assemblies, the Crawford Campus Center’s Mainstage Theater received a new name this summer: The Carrafiell Family Theater.

EA student-artists received many accolades for their creativity this spring. Twelve students were awarded Dora Khayatt prizes in art:

Named in honor of John B. Carrafiell ’83, an anchor donor to the $100 million Ever Episcopal Campaign, the Carrafiell Family Theater features 600 seats, a 2,000 square-foot stage, and state-of-the-art lighting, acoustical, and safety equipment.

John Carrafiell was a leader during his time at EA, including serving as the Vestry senior warden and varsity lacrosse captain. “Enthusiastically embracing all aspects of the Episcopal experience—from the classroom and sports fields; to Chapel, community and the arts—had the greatest impact on my life,” shared Carafiell.

He then went on to Yale, and eventually moved to London to head one of Morgan Stanley’s divisions before forming his own company.

A longtime supporter of the arts, Carafiell has established scholarships and teaching funds to support students, teaching, and research at the Yale School of Architecture and the Yale School of Art, and is a member of the acquisition committee of the Tate Modern.

FARM-TO-FEED FUN

Episcopal’s 2019 Lilley Fellow, Kat Harrar ’21, recently presented her research and findings to students and teachers. Kat researched farm-to-feed models, worked in EA’s Sid Buck Community Garden to grow produce that could be used in EA’s Tierney Dining Hall, educated students about locally sourcing produce, and compiled an EA farms manual. The Episcopal Academy graduated 144 seniors during its 234th Commencement exercises on Thursday, June 6 in the Class of 1944 Chapel.

Students were recognized for their accomplishments and congratulated by Dr. T.J. Locke, Greville Haslam Head of School; Dr. Steven E. Copit ’80, Chair of the Board of Trustees; Mr. Mike Letts, Head of Upper School; and Ms. Cheryl McLauchlan, Form Dean.

This year’s student speakers were valedictorian Amy Chen and salutatorian Mackenzie Lee, who commented on the lasting impact the school had given its graduates as they look toward the next chapter of their lives.

“Episcopal has inspired us to be kind and generous, assisting each other as allies instead of working against each other as competitors,” said valedictorian Amy Chen. “Episcopal has taught us how to challenge ourselves and pushed us to achieve things we would have never even thought were possible.”

Salutatorian Mackenzie Lee agreed. “Let us find comfort in the undeniable and bold uniformity that binds us all as Episcopal graduates, while continuing to stand apart because of the unparalleled foundation this school, our teachers, our mentors, and our friends and families have given us,” she said.

However, while students remarked on what The Episcopal Academy had provided to them, Greville Haslam Head of School T.J. Locke shared the impact of the students’ character and integrity on the school as a whole.

“You make the school. You make the culture,” said Dr. Locke. “We try as adults to influence it, to establish rules and norms, to model behaviors, to teach values - but a school’s culture depends on you.”

In his speech, Dr. Locke provided examples of how the students’ character and integrity formed a lasting legacy on The Episcopal Academy and its culture, from how the students interact with prospective families and young students, to how they rose above childish taunts at a fall football game by proudly singing the alma mater.

“I know many of you have been reflecting recently on your years at EA and perhaps what this school has done for you. But what I want you to know is that any amount of influence we have had on you falls short of the impact you have had on us.”

He writes, “Ana Maria and I spent two weeks in El Salvador in July, visiting her family and friends from childhood there—no violence, but we moved in a protected world.” He continues to teach Urban Planning Law at Penn and is working on a report on the effects of Philadelphia’s geology and climate on its founding, development, and future.

Don Cooper is enjoying life in Arizona for the past 20 plus years with his wife, Paula. He shared, “I am doing some genteel hiking, a little (pathetic) golf, and am active in and past president of the Tubac Center of the Arts, in this southern Arizona community ‘Where Art and History Meet.’ I am still able to do some traveling—headed for France in September, New Orleans in December, and France again next July. I reminisce often and fondly of my time and friendships at EA so long ago, and am sad at the loss of so many of those friends. But I try to look ahead to what comes next.”

1951 CLASS AGENT NEEDED Don Race and his wife, Bev, celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in July. He shared, “I’ve been retired now for 22 years. We live in a big old house on 30 acres on the Vermilion River in Fitchville, Ohio.

We are still in relatively good health for two old dudes. We have lost quite a few from the class of 1951.

I wonder how many of us are left.”

1952 CLASS AGENTS: Craig TenBroeck & Jim Siegel The Class of 1952 sends their sympathy to Barclay Beahm on the death of his wife, Muriel, in early August 2019.

Bill Wheeler and his wife, Bette, continue to enjoy the wonderful state of Washington in Yakima and Lake Chelan, both east of the Cascade mountains. He shared, “still playing some golf. We enjoy having kids and grandkids spending time with us at the lake in the summer and some traveling in the winter. Classmates in the vicinity are always welcome.”

Jim Siegel reports, “John Haines recently had a fall and broke his left hip. He will be in a rehab program for two months. The University of Pennsylvania recently honored John for his fifty years of volunteering at the Penn Relays.”

Jim Siegel shared, “Our class was very saddened to learn of the passing of our classmate Bob Lee. He was an inspiration to us all with his brilliance in the classroom and his friendly nature on the playing field. He dedicated his life’s work to being a teacher and administrator at Episcopal and was always a loyal member of our class.”

1953 CLASS AGENT: Don Pillsbury Nate Bachman remembers fondly the five who went with him from EA to Princeton, three of whom remained close friends until their deaths: George Ramonat, Ed Byers, and Leigh Ford. He is still working every day at his small firm and spends half his time in Sun Valley. Nine years ago, an errant skier ran over him, breaking his left leg, which slowed him down a bit.

He is currently recovering from a fractured hip but expects to make a full recovery and will be back on the slopes. He leaves us with this quote attributed to Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get.

We make a life by what we give.”

Skipper Wood and his wife had nine children and adopted four more. Two of the latter, with special needs, have returned home with their three children. He shared, “One thinks that life gets easier as we will do the task put before them just fine.”

Cliff Ferris has retired from the University of Wyoming and currently has a research grant from the Gillette Museum, Colorado State University.

Cliff is an acknowledged expert in Lepidoptera.

Roland Machold shares that he has been busy since his last update.

He was Treasurer of New Jersey and retired with surpluses in both the annual budget and the pension funds. Prior to that, he managed the state pension fund for 23 years.

They have two children who are doing well. They tragically lost a daughter in 1971. Roland and his wife, Pammy, founded a school for autistic children in 1970 that is still going strong. Next year they are planning a cruise to southern Spain with a daughter and two grandchildren. He ended his note with, “Sail on!”

Chuck Evans reports, “In July, Berdie and I took an interesting motor trip around the Gaspe Peninsula, Canada, with Harry (Pete) Jones, his wife, Carolyn, my brother, Laird Evans ’62, and his wife, Jean. We started from our cabin on Raymond Pond, Maine, spent two nights in Quebec, then one or two nights in the towns of Rimouski, St. Ann, Gaspe, Perce, Carlton-Sur-Mer, and La Malbaie.

Berdie drove all of the 1,800 miles in our 2004 Toyota minivan. We’re all still friends!”

Bill Hoffman is long since retired and living happily in Maine.

Bill Crockett spends his time in Cape Cod, Massachusetts (his ancestral homeland), and winters in Bonita Springs, Florida “with kids, grandkids, and doctors in between.” He fondly remembers Eddie Jones ’53, who died last December, as one of three lifers who helped him adjust to EA when he transferred into the III form.

He reports that it is great that we are not getting old; just older. He and Phyllis recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary.

Lynne Graburn lost his dearly beloved wife of 38 years, Dreer, to post-surgery complications in 2009. In 2015, he moved to an independent living center called Beverwyck. It was a very successful transition that has opened doors to new friends and communal activities, activities that he had pretty much abandoned. His health continues to be good. He is contemplating resuming traveling and particularly cruising, perhaps river cruises. He asked, “Any advice out there from those who have cruised?”

Sadly, we learned that Tony Ostheimer died last December, the same day as Eddie Jones.

Don Pillsbury reports, “Sue and I continue to be in good health, age adjusted. We continue to work on Sue’s 1930 Model-A Ford (Emily got new chrome bumpers this year). We went this spring to see a grandson graduate from the Naval Academy (quite a spectacle) and then onto California to be with my daughter and her family as her son graduated from high school. He is now in college in Boston. We have nine grandchildren but no great grandchildren—yet. As a defensive

measure, I have taken up clock repair.

I continue to shoot skeet and play the ukulele. And this winter, I plan to get a Ham radio license. Not sure what I will do with it but it seemed it might be fun. We will see.”

Dick Behr and his wife are completing their first year in a retirement community on the outskirts of Philadelphia, which they enjoy.

They still love to travel and recently returned from a 12-day trip to the Canadian Rockies by train with a tour group called Road Scholar. He highly recommends it. They have five great grandchildren, most recently, a baby boy. They have lots of boys in their family.

1954 CLASS AGENT: Curt Young Curt Young shared, “All good things must come to an end, and our 65th reunion was a great success, not only in the number of classmates attending but the dollars given to the school. Eleven classmates gathered at Beaumont in Bryn Mawr on May 3 for cocktails and dinner. The names of those graduating classmates no longer with us were remembered in gracious conversation. Our rallying cause for this great turnout was in honor of reunion leader Bill Sykes.

He would have been very happy to see that we attained 100% of our quota in number and a gift of $51,600, far exceeding all expectations. Our class won the cup for participation and was recognized at the Alumni Awards ceremony. From all indications, those that attended our reunion had a great time, and it was suggested that we try to meet once a year for a luncheon get-together.” He asked those interested in an annual luncheon to please contact him.

Bruce Watson reports that he is active, in good health, and fears he is the last conservative left. He sings bass in his choir and has done so for 40 years. Last June, his first daughter was married in Virginia Beach, then he visited another daughter’s family near Gettysburg, where he went target shooting with a grandson. He is pleased to report that he did hold his own. He also helps an EA cousin care for his wife with dementia. He said, “There but for the grace of God go I.” He also reports he is an avid cruciverbalist and suggests we “look that up.”

CLASS AGENT: Drew Jackson Bill Richards has joined the board of a medical technology company, Mydayda, founded by a U.S. Marine sniper. Mydayda provides doctors with the ability to monitor patients remotely.

1964 CLASS AGENT: Tom Zug John Rosenberg shared that he has been traveling with a small group (an Indian American gynecologist, an American Indian medicine woman, and a Boston psychologist) doing a women’s health project for Conscious Journeys, a travel, education, and development organization out of Colorado and Chengdu. This organization provides constructive opportunities for volunteers and tourists in Tibetan areas. He invites EA students to join him and volunteer with this life-changing organization.

John said, “We’ve been staying with nomads and farmers at 10-12,000 feet.

Pretty rugged. I plan on a Philippines mission in November if my luck holds.

That’s a vacation compared to this. I am still humbled and shocked by the

So nice. Our daughter, Amy, and her two daughters, Kira (12) and Alexa (10), came to the shore and had a great vacation. Amy has been a 5th grade teacher for the last 20 years at Starkweather Elementary.”

Tom Zug reported that the Class of 1964 held its 55th reunion with 34 classmates and spouses at his home in May. He said, “A great time was had by all! 1971 CLASS AGENT: Tony Brown Christopher D’Angelo was the moderator and a speaker for the program, GDPR: Nine Months Later— The Impact in the EU on Enforcement and Compliance and in the US on Discovery, at the midyear meeting of the International Association of Defense Counsel in Santa Barbara, California, in February 2019. The panel, consisting of leading lawyers from Europe and the U.S., addressed the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that went into effect on May 25, 2018 and focused on how non-EU based firms must comply with the GDPR when offering goods and services to EU “data subjects” in the EU or monitoring the behavior of EU residents in the EU. In addition, he is the author of the chapter, “The Scope and Use of The AttorneyClient Privilege in the U.S. and Its Applicability to Communications in the U.S. And Abroad,” which appears in The Attorney-Client Privilege in Civil Litigation: Protecting and Defending Confidentiality, seventh edition, ABA: 2019. This revised edition provides guidance for understanding and handling the many complexities of attorney-client privilege and confidential communication in the corporate setting.

Bruce Stone has been enjoying early retirement, spending his time between Ocean City, New Jersey and Vero Beach, Florida. Bruce shared, “We have decided to sell our boat as we have purchased and renovated a wonderful home in Florida. I still play a lot of golf but arthritis is beginning to limit my time playing. I want to thank the many classmates and friends that commented on my brother Ted’s death this past October. I really appreciated hearing from many of you. GREENY’S GANG BACK ON CAMPUS Paul Hayward ‘83 and John Stelwagon ‘82 returned to campus in May for the Spring Sports Assembly to help congratulate the boys’ track and field team on their success at the Penn Relays. Both men wore their green t-shirts from when they were part of “Greeny’s Gang,” when Coach George F. Greenwood, Hon., coached the track team. Stelwagon and Hayward shared with the athletes and their parents some of the things Mr. Greenwood taught them, like respect for the sport, yourself, and your competitors, handling disappointment and injury, and demonstrating humility.

Jenny and I welcome visitors and promise lots of laughs.”

Matthew Evans recently completed his first year as the head of St. Peter’s School in Philadelphia. He said, “It has been a great experience getting to know all the alumni who went on to attend Episcopal. I am looking forward to another year…not as a rookie.”

In November 2018, Mike Goldstein, became the Executive Director of the JCC of Central New Jersey, where he served in various capacities since 2004. Mike shared, “The JCC of Central New Jersey is located in Scotch Plains with a $10 million annual operating budget. My JCC provides vital programs and services for all ages and stages in our community. My eldest child, Bess, graduated from Westtown School in June 2019 and is now attending Bryn Mawr College in the fall. Her sister, Ella, will be following in her footsteps (and her mother’s, grandfather’s, and great grandfather’s) and is now attending in the 9th grade.”

ANDRE STEPHANO ‘89 DELIVERS MESSAGE OF HOPE DURING 9/11 CHAPEL TALK This year’s 9/11 Chapel speaker was Andre Stephano ‘89, a third-generation EA alumnus and former Marine Corps Platoon Sergeant and Naval Intelligence Officer in the Reserves. He began by asking the students to be grateful for the blessings and advantages that they enjoy, by virtue of our democracy, strong economy, and freedoms. It’s important, he added, to be positive and thankful for this, even though it can be hard to do so, especially on a tragic day.

He told the story of Jeff Coale ‘88, who lost his life on 9/11 while pursuing his dream to become a restaurant owner while working at Windows on the World in the World Trade Center. Mr. Stephano implored the students to remember that, “Jeff sat in Chapel at Episcopal, as you do today. Jeff graduated the year before I did. Like you, he was a nice person with a family and friends and a great future.”

His advice for this generation is to recognize that we all have a role to play in facing today’s challenges. He advised students that we should live a full life and give freely of ourselves. “Giving is the true source of our strength as a nation and as human beings,” Mr. Stephano said. “As you build your own life, give to others as you would your own family, and you will be working towards a safer and better world and honoring the lives of those lost on 9/11.”

Alex Henwood and his wife, Cassi, are the proud parents of Riley Elizabeth Henwood, born on September 27, 2018. Riley is adored by her aunts and uncles, including Christian Henwood ’07.

Brian Shanahan joined the EA staff this year as the new head boys, varsity basketball coach. During his time at EA, he was a three-sport athlete, and he graduated from Temple University with a varsity letter in basketball.

He joins EA after coaching at The Phelps School, where his teams won over 170 games and more than 70 athletes moved on to play basketball at the collegiate level. He’s thrilled to be back at his alma mater! He recently attended a Coaches vs. Cancer event. Sam Rogers continues to live outside of Washington, D.C. with his wife, Veronica, and two daughters, Ava (6) and Maddie (4). He works as a technical instructor where he teaches classes on how to build software applications, but he says, “secretly just relishes having a captive audience for all of his dad jokes.”

On August 3, Dr. Jasmine Shafagh was married to Dr. Ashkan Ghaneie from Orlando, Florida at The Crystal Tea Room in downtown Philadelphia.

She is planning to move to Orlando to continue practicing dentistry with her husband, a cardiothoracic radiologist at Advent Health, and their mini golden-doodle puppy, Pasha.

David is splitting his time between the UK and North Carolina and recently began the third year of his Ph.D. in Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge.

Our latest tradition is meeting up at the William Tierney residence in Philadelphia for what we call “cuts nights,” where we grill a variety of steaks and other delicious food and reminisce on our Episcopal days. I’d like to dedicate this update to our two dear Episcopal friends who aren’t with us anymore, Andrew Stuper and Blake Miller.”

2006 Renata Certo-Ware and Tristan Graham (Canterbury Academy ’04) were engaged while on vacation in Dallas, Texas. They will be married next spring in Palm Beach, Florida.

Renata and her sister, Sasha CertoWare ‘07, together with their mother, Rosemarie Certo, opened the second location of the craft brewery their family founded in 1985. The location is at 22nd and Washington in Philadelphia’s Point Breeze neighborhood, and doubles the size of their previous brewing capacity.

2007 CLASS AGENTS: Shane Isdaner, Annie Spofford Ripley, & Megan McFarland Shane Isdaner got married on July 5 in San Diego, California to Sarah Landerholm from Edmonds, Washington. The two met in San Diego and were happy to host family and friends. In attendance were EA alumni brothers Greg Isdaner ’05, Cody Isdaner ’09, and Rory Isdaner ’13; and fellow Class of 2007 friends Matt Sheehan (and his wife Liz), Luke Miller, and Mike Nealis, who traveled from Shenzhen, China to attend. After graduating from Georgetown University with a degree in human science in 2017, Curran Reilly spent her gap years working at the Castleman Disease Collaborative Network as Chief of Staff to Dr. David Fajgenbaum and traveling. On August 10, Curran received her white coat and began her medical education at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Curran is interested in pediatric medicine, specifically cardiology or anesthesiology, and will receive her MD in 2023.

Her team designs and implements monitoring studies throughout Peru and analyzes the results to inform evidence-based policy decisions.

Nick Mead rowed in men’s 8+ in the 2019 World Rowing Championships in August in Austria. The boat placed 5th, which qualifies Team USA for a spot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Alex Burman is a rising senior at Susquehanna University Sigmund Wise School of Business. He shared, “This past baseball season my brother, Ben Burman ’15, and I won the Landmark Conference championship. Ben capped off his career with a .335 batting average and 127 hits. I finished my junior season hitting .384 with 61 hits and 3 HR’s, earning First Team All-Conference.”

Margaux Paolino played field hockey in the Pan Am Games, winning a Bronze medal for Team USA in Peru this summer. She is currently the senior captain with the Duke Blue Devils and is in the process playing with Team USA in hopes of qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

2017 CLASS AGENTS: Nikki Cannon, Kelly Flynn, & Sarah Keffer Matt Freese, who plays Major League Soccer for the Philadelphia Union, represented the MLS at its 2019 Homegrown Game this past July in Orlando, Florida.

In 2018, Molly O’Brien was named to Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. Molly played in 15 games, making 12 starts, and finished second on the team in scoring with 19 points. She scored seven goals, with two game winners.

She registered five assists, notched five points against St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island. She recorded a goal against FDU, Saint Joseph’s, and Duquesne, had an assist against FDU, Davidson, Duquesne, St. Bonaventure, and Rhode Island.

She played every minute versus Dayton and Fordham and took 25 shots with 15 on goal. She was also ranked nationally.

Maddie O’Reilly, who plays water polo at the University of Michigan, was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for maintaining a GPA over 3.7 while playing intercollegiate athletics in the Big Ten Conference.

She will be playing lacrosse for Penn State this spring.

Caroline Kelly was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the week this September, after making 27 saves in one week in her first season as a goalie with Boston University Field Hockey.

Lewis J. Hart Jr., ‘63 Lewis J. Hart Jr., of Rosemont, Pennsylvania and Chappaqua, New York, passed away at the age of 74 on August 10 in Mt. Kisco, New York. Lewis, also known as “Corky” to close friends, was a competitive athlete during his 13 years at The Episcopal Academy. He went on to the University of Pennsylvania (‘67), served in the Army from 1964-1966, and later earned an MBA from The Wharton School (‘74).

He married Julia Hart (née Julia Rhyne Mullen) in Gastonia, North Carolina in 1979, and they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this past April. An accomplished banker, he oversaw the Utilities and Project Finance departments at several New York financial institutions over his near 40-year professional career. He served on The Episcopal Academy Alumni Society Board of Managers and was a member of the First City Troop, the Military Order of Foreign Wars, and the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Chappaqua, New York.

From playing basketball in his youth and coaching his son, to watching games at The Palestra and closely following the Phillies, Lewis’ passion for athletics never waned. However, even greater than his love of sports was his zeal for education and history. Lewis was well respected by many for his integrity, keen intellect, and encyclopedic memory—particularly for sports statistics and historical facts. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Lewis J. Hart III; Lewis’ wife, Louise McCready Hart; their two children, Lewis J. Hart IV (Justice) and Houston; and his niece, Carolyn Hart Marcus; Carolyn’s husband, Matthew Farmer; and their two children, Lowery and Richard.

Robert H. Lee, Jr., ‘52 Robert H. Lee, Jr. passed away on July 7, 2019. He enrolled at EA in 1940, received his A.B. from Princeton University in 1956, and returned to teach in the English department at The Episcopal Academy in 1957. In 1958 he completed graduate work in English at Middlebury College and was appointed Chairman of Episcopal’s English department and was elected to the Alumni Society Board of Managers in 1966. Bob was named Head of the Upper School in 1975, a position he held until 1980. Following his retirement, he served the school in various capacities from substitute English teacher to Chairman of EA Family Forum. He joined the EA board in 1988 as an Alumni Trustee and was named a term trustee in 1990. He received the Distinguished Service Award in 1992.

Bob’s sons are Ned ‘79 and Cliff ‘81, step sons are John ‘75 and Jamie ‘76, and grandsons are Zander ‘08 and Mac ‘10. His daughter-in-law, Tracie Lee, has been a member of the EA staff since 2011. She is the coordinator of faculty recruitment and was the EAPA president from 2010-2011.

Through his many dedicated roles—student, alumnus, teacher, parent, grandparent, and trustee—he was associated with The Episcopal Academy for nearly eight decades.

His wisdom and dedication will continue to have an impact on our school for generations to come.

Junto—Episcopal’s debate society—is the oldest club at the school, founded in 1854. The club was formed in the tradition, and by the same name, of a club started by Benjamin Franklin when he was just 21 years old in 1727.

Franklin’s original Junto (also called the Leather Apron Club) was established to debate questions of morals, politics, and natural philosophy, and to propose unique solutions. Its name came from the Spanish word “junta,” which means assembly. Franklin wrote in his autobiography that the group’s debates were “to be conducted in the sincere spirit of inquiry after truth, without fondness for dispute or desire of victory.”

This sincerity of spirit and value of cognitive diversity is central in the EA club’s mission today. Overseen by Faculty Advisor Jen Maier, the club is a forum for students to debate both sides of an argument, not just the side they agree with.

Topics are chosen by the student-led Junto board, which comprises experienced club members.

The first time the club was pictured in the Tabula was in 1916.

In the Scholium, Brendan DePillis ’20 described the benefits of his participation. “Junto is great if you want to learn from other people’s perspectives. A lot of the time you’re not debating from a perspective that you necessarily agree with but it’s your job anyway to prove a point and try to convince people.”

Throughout its long history at EA, the club has taken many different forms. When it began, students engaged in oftenheated debates around slavery. Later, club members published transcripts of their debates in the offshoot publication the Ciceronian (later the Scholium) in the late 1800s. The club hosted more formal debates in the 1920s and even a mock Supreme Court trial in the 1960s. Today, the club holds monthly in-house debates for the Upper School community, concluding with a three-round debate tournament, judged

by Junto alumni, to win the coveted MacBean Bowl.
